Review Horn Please - Melbourne

Christian Martinu
Absolutely delicious! So fantastic. The staff were the friendliest and the food. Wow! We chose the chef's selection and were so satisfied with the choices offered; tasty and colourful. The breads were charred and perfect to scoop up the creamy curries. The beers were reasonably priced and the variety of cocktails was excellent. But I want to just say thank you, the staff really were so friendly and knowledgeable. We will be back, either dining in or take away. Do try it!

Absolutely AMAZING! As soon as I stepped into the venue, I couldn’t stop smiling. It was such a lovely, lively atmosphere with great music. The staff were so welcoming and friendly. And the FOOD WAS INCREDIBLE. The most delicious Indian food I’ve had since I moved here. Such great value for money too. Can’t recommend it highly enough
Tara Rogers
Me and my partner came here for Valentine’s Day and enjoyed the set menu so much! They adhered to our vegetarian requirements so well and every meal was explained by our lovely waitress. They were all so tasty and we felt really impressed by the quality of food. The cocktails as well were amazing and all had such a unique flavour. Even though they were super busy we felt attended too and knew we could wave someone down if needed. Thank you so much for a lovely valentines dinner xx

We had a great Indian food experience in a relaxed environment. Absolutely superb flavors with quality ingredients in every dish and also excellent table service. I only wish there was a spicy vindaloo curry option on the menu. A very impressive restaurant.

Ambiance is really good. Amazing cocktails and starters. The food is unauthentic Indian food as they say so don’t expect spice. The main course was quite mild and rather sweet for us. The desserts were amazing as well. The servers are attentive and polite. Good overall experience a little disappointed with curries being sweet.
Manish Bangia
The taste was not so good. Not sure why people are preferring to go to this place. We tried variety of food, but none of them was upto the mark. It seems this restaurant is more focused upon Aussie taste making food quite mild with some sweetish flavour in every dish
Heather Meredith
What a lovely experience! Although very busy the service was amazing. So much variety and great portions. The set $50 menu can't be beat as well. One can see the chefs working their magic in the kitchen which is nice. Highly recommend and will be back!

Save this for the most authentic and mouthwatering Indian feast in Fitzroy @hornplease that specialises in Indian curries, street food, desserts and cocktails. The food here is, hands down, truly one of the best Indian you’ll find in Melbourne also it reminded me of home, as everything tasted so real, desi and delicious. We loved the thali for $55pp that comes with an assortment of so many vegetarian and non vegetarian curries and lentils, besides naan and rice and that too you can get unlimited refill of everything in this thali. The best way to get a slice of real Indian flavours is through this thali here @hornplease The cocktails here are so refreshing and beautiful. The street food/entrees are so addictive and absolutely flavoursome. My favourite was the tandoori chicken and the Pani puri. And oh my the desserts, both kulfi and gulab jamun were extraordinary, irresistible and very yum. Must try. The service is very attentive and prompt even on a busy weekend. And the staff here are all very wonderful, kind and cheerful souls. The vibe here is very upbeat with an eccentric and vibrant decor. Celebrate 11th birthday of @hornplease on 14th August with 3hr bottomless brunch from 12-3pm with unlimited cocktails, wine and food for only $65pp. Book today before they are sold out, or if you can’t wait that long, visit today to enjoy a slice of India in the best possible and delectable way ever only @hornplease

The food was very mild ( I would have preferred a little more spice!) but the flavours were delicious. The venue is great, with lively music that is not too loud! Large tables are expected to get the banquet, which annoyed us at first. But it ended up being quite reasonable. Good food, comfortable place. Will definitely go there again.

A great night had by all. The food is amazing ,recommend the Okra ,Dahl and samosas. The goat curry is fantastic.Staff were so nice and helpful. It was so good we went back again tonight for a rake away which was just as good. forgot to say how good the ban reads were and the kulfi ice cream. Thank you.

Highly recommended for food lovers. Indian fusion with great taste.

Great service, amazing food and a very cool atmosphere. One of the best Indian restaurants in the country!

We've been regular customers for many years... Sunday evening cash only buffet was a revelation. Big bowls of soup/gravy with little meat or vegetables. Naan an add d extra. Lamb floating in the butter chicken, miscalculated bill which increased when we asked for it to be corrected. We ask again to get the number of kids and adults right. No acknowledgement of our displeasure. We won't be back
Stuart Gundry
Very hip modern Indian cuisine, great service. We had a blast will come back.
Melanie Grieves
Loved my dinner here food was great, everything was beautiful and fantastic service u all the staff. Will definitely go back.

I would avoid at all costs! Management has no respect towards customers and is very rude and ignorant! Highly unprofessional

Delicious, Fantastic. Some of the best #IndianFood I've eaten out of Delhi. Portion sizes are huge. Value for money. Any wonder you're always so busy.

The best indian i have ever had. And such amazing service!
Ivanka Weierter
Absolutely amazing. My new favourite The service was great. The food was flavoursome, fresh, original and modern. I'll be back next time I'm in Melbourne.

Curries were unremarkable and cloying. The only standout was the black dhal. Also really disappointing that a place like Horn Please would use canned garlic on their naans. Yes you're customers can tell and no we are not impressed. Won't be coming back.

I have dined at the other two establishments run by the owners of this restaurant and they were great this one was such a let down and would not come back .<br/>The food was utterly disappointing, to start with I ordered the Gol gappa they were good not to sure about the flowers for the presentation followed by the cheese naan which was served cold in crisp and felt it was made on a tava . The service staff obviously lacks any understanding of service and while my friend and I left the entire naan while clearing the plate they didn’t not even bother to ask why we had left the food obviously they had the horse blinkers on. Main course ordered the Palak paneer and the fish and rice and garlic naan . A garnish for your chef is something which adds value to a dish throwing half a kilogram of carrot julienne on a dish doesn’t add value , also the garnish varies for a dish garnish all the dishes with the same ingredients dosent make sense . Besides the garlic the Palak paneer didn’t have falvour it was a watered down saag, and I am not referring it to not being spicy but not being full of flavour. The fish well I think you have positioned it in the wrong place in the menu should be with the desserts the coconut curry base was awful I honestly get nauseated by that dish . Overall horrible experience- you guys have ruined Indian food in that venue . Cheers never going back to that venue -

I love all of Jessi Singh's restaurants and Horn Please is no exception. The spot feels a bit more casual and lively than Daughter in Law but is otherwise similar, with a comparable menu and drink selection and Indian films projected on the wall. I was dining with my family so I got to sample a selection of dishes, some favourites of which were the turmeric yoghurt and pakora dish and (surprisingly), the naan and dip platter. I wouldn't have chosen to order this but did at my family's suggestion and will admit it would make a great addition to any meal. We also tried the fried okra, tandoori chicken and aloo baingan - all great. My dad even said it was the best Indian food he's ever had, so obviously they're doing something right.
Dumba
Great service and amazing food.good level of spice and flavours.

Our experience at Horn Please was a mixed one. The restaurant is comfortable and the menu has plenty of interesting options which go beyond the standard Indian fare.<br/><br/>The Colonel Tao Cauliflower entree was a highlight. An Indochinese inspired dish which was packed with flavour. The mains were a little less impressive: the korma was pleasant but nothing amazing. Breads are also pleasing.<br/><br/>At the end of the night, the staff insisted that we pay in cash as this is what the restaurant does on a Sunday night, apparently. I didn’t have any cash and insisted on paying using my card. The staff really weren’t pleased by this. Frankly, this did leave a bit of a poor final impression of the restaurant.

Lovely service and amazing food. Very clean and inviting vibe.. the curries were so tasty and fresh with the meat cooked perfectly. Will ask for the food to be spicier next time though.

Came here for a food beer week function; the reminder phone call included advice to “be hungry”.<br/>Well, we certainly needed to be. <br/><br/>The night started badly when I banged my head on the Uber’s door, so that must be why my review is a little cloudy, not the 5 beers they served that paired perfectly with the food. Apparently it’s the only good thing the British left in India! The food was delightful and plentiful and the service impeccable. It’s a wonderful special event and I can’t wait to be back for a regular service.

We went on Sunday to locals night and enjoyed the buffet for 25 per person. The food was great, with butter chicken, beef curry, veggie korma, Salad and several other dishes. Good value and great service. This was our second meal here we also enjoyed an off the menu night with 6 and everyone had a great meal and night also.

Went there for my birthday dinner, this place is not for Indian taste buds. Upon ordering we requested to make the curries medium spicy. The service staff says we already pre make our curries and just serve them as it is, we do not make them fresh so they cant be adjusted. This was the most funniest thing I ever heard from restaurant staff and happily agreeing that they dont serve fresh food. The curries tasted on sweeter side, may be they are made as per Australian palette. The naan bread was below average. Did not have ice to keep the wine cold. Arrogant staff who dont know much about any dishes. Overall bad experience.

Great food, amazing ambience, very cooperative staff, one of the best experiences. Here we found some good fusion food and modern Indian style of serving. Though the place is kinda expensive, we think it’s worth it.

4.5<br/>Jan 2020: came back this time for the banquet and the food was again excellent. Great value too for the amount of food we had, which included some of my favourites - the gol gappa and tandoori chicken. We also had the papadi chaat and cauliflower (both excellent). There was a good range of curries, with the dhal my favourite. Overall, excellent food, great value and very attentive staff. <br/><br/>Mar 2019: Excellent Indian food, great and attentive service and definitely somewhere I'll be back! We had gol gappa (panipuri) and although we couldn't customise it, the combination of flavours was wonderful if a little less spicy than traditional. The papadam with condiments was good, cheese naan was amazing and tandoori chicken was one of the best I've had: tender, succulent and well marinaded. We were already full by the time mains arrived, but butter chicken was good and paneer malai masala was ok. Mango lassi was nice too. Highly recommended.

This is one of my favourite restaurants currently. Delicious, well put together food. Modern Indian. Excellent service: I took my 8mo daughter and a friend here for an early dinner the other month. All the staff were so friendly and playing with my daughter. Really appreciate all your efforts! Beautiful restaurant aswell. Taken a few friends who now have taken their friends/family. Always hoping for another visit shortly after I’ve left.

Let me start by saying that this is now my favourite Indian food in Melbourne.  The service is quick and the curries are to die for.  We have had the butter chicken, goat curry and the dahl - they were all amazing.  The butter chicken in particular is by far the best I've tried anywhere - it is creamy and delicious with a beautiful flavour.  The dahl is outstanding as well, I never thought I would enjoy lentils that much!  We had the rice as well as the basket of naans and both were delicious.  <br/><br/>My only criticism would be the entrees we tried on our first visit tasted quite similar (they were ok, but not wonderful) mainly due to the sauces they served them with which were over-sweet and in abundance, but not in a good way.  These were recommended by the waitress, which we found a little odd, since she assured us they were the favourites from the menu and we didn't really enjoy them.<br/><br/>Nevertheless we will definitely be back for the ah-maz-ing curries, naan and rice!
Kirti
what a great curry house!<br/><br/>Easy to find on the tram route and enjoyed our visit from the moment we walked in.<br/><br/>Vibrantly decorated and the staff are glowing in their effort to please throughout our stay.<br/><br/>Starters were Crab Tiki, spot on as it was delicate and could taste and enjoy the crab,<br/><br/>Samosa plate was very enjoyable.<br/><br/>We share the two starters between two couples which was more than enough for a starter.<br/><br/>Goat Curry, tick. Rich and full of flavour, great job.<br/><br/>Butter Chicken, “the best best butter chicken I’ve ever had.<br/><br/>Village Lamb Curry was very enjoyable <br/><br/>Beef Lashooni was enjoyable

Walking into Horn Please you notice the restaurant has a great vibe. I particularly liked the artwork around the dining area. The service is fantastic - everyone we had the pleasure of interacting with were very friendly and professional. <br/><br/>Tandoori snapper was my favourite dish, which surprised me. Colonel Tso's Cauliflower came in second. I also liked the fresh flavours of the Papadi Chaat. <br/><br/>I enjoyed the novelty of the self-service beer fridge too, which had a great selection of beers.<br/><br/>I found the curries lacked a bit of a spicy kick, although I am sympathetic to the fact that some of the dishes have subtle flavours, such as the Ghost Kharda Masala (goat curry) which had been stewed in marrow. This was my favourite curry along with the Paneer Masala. <br/><br/>I am glad we stopped by and I’d come back to enjoy the ambiance again, but I’d make a special request for a spicier curry.

**My rating would have been 3.5, but leaning towards 4**<br/>Any place with a new and fresh take on Indian dining excites me, and so did Horn OK.<br/>The ambience is interesting and grabs your attention instantly. There is a lot happening here; new Bollywood songs, Mughal-e-azam on the projector, big paintings on both the sides, hindi “muhavare” in big fonts, and some interesting artwork. It is makes your dining experience interesting for sure!<br/>The service is great and the staff is very hospitable! Even though the place was like 90% full, our order was delivered quite fast.<br/>The menu is small but interesting, and it doesn’t live on the ordinary. For example, you will find yoghurt kebabs, which is not in fact common in India, on this 2 page menu. <br/>However, both the dishes that I had today had some faults in them :( <br/>The yoghurt kebab, although superb in taste, was a bit sticky to chew. The butter chicken was rich and creamy, but a little bland for my taste. We also had a basket of naan to taste them all at once, and they were delicious! <br/>I still find the menu interesting enough to visit again!

Some great stuff here and also some average. Firstly the Samosas as an entree are amazing! Huge, tasty - a must have! I could eat two serves with two beers and by absolutely done and dusted for the night. The mains were decent except for the fish curry which was very average and wasn't finished as a result. Sauce was tasty but the fish was the wrong texture. Should use Rockling rather than the cheap Blue grenadier which is only good for frying. The Dahl was exceptional. I was surprised at how non spicy everything was which is fine for me but others may require some chilli hit. Service is friendly and attentive.  Atmosphere is pretty cool. The beer selection is awesome and I love the self serve fridge - it's like being in a bottle shop, fun! The ladies of the group really appreciated that their Prosecco came as individual bottles rather than from a larger sometimes flat communal bottle. Dessert while insanely small was insanely delicious. Prices are pretty keen particularly for the area. Overall I would return.

Finally got the chance to try this restaurant after hearing a lot about it. Located in Fitzroy North, the place itself is quite nice, having a modern feel that sets it apart from many other Indian restaurants. While the food was quite good, with the curries being very flavoursome, I feel that better service could have added to the experience. We sat in the main dining room and found it to be quite loud, so would probably not recommend if after a quiet dinner.

Great food and friendly efficient service. Particularly loved the cauliflower entre and the fish curry main. We’re from Sydney and heard they are opening a restaurant there too... so we’ll be sure to make a trip there!
Melita
Modern Indian with excellent curries and an amazing kulfi icecream. Decor is clean and modern. Staff are good but the place is very busy so it can take a while to catch their attention at times. A bit noisy with very reverberant floors and walls.

We popped into Horn Please for s family birthday celebrations. This venue was a lovely space with great cultural Indian portraits hanging on walls and elegant dining set up. Being 9 adults and 3 kids meant it was much easy to go with the $59 set menu which was a huge amount of food per person. We got 4 entrees, four curry mains (actually they were nice enough to let us choose 5), breads and rice and raita plus desserts for a fiddy per head. Corkage was $10 per bottle but they were also fully licensed and had some great beer available. <br/><br/>For entrees we had Papdi chaat which was kind of an Indian nachos, Vegetarian samosa, Tandoori chicken and a Colonel Tso Cauliflower which was almost sweet and sour with a chilli hit. <br/><br/>For curries we tried Butter Chicken, Lentil Dhal, Coconut Fish Curry, Lamb curry & goat curry. <br/><br/>The butter chicken was so yummy we quickly finished what was on the table and had to ask for more. We really enjoyed the lamb and goat curries and I surprisingly liked the lentil dhal very much. This was my top curry other than the butter chicken. <br/><br/>The assorted naan were warm and great for mopping up the liquids from our plates. <br/><br/>We finished our meal with some kulfi ice cream which was a big hit.<br/><br/>A really enjoyable time and staff were seriously polite and accommodating throughout our dining experience.<br/><br/>On Sundays they have a $25 buffet which sounds too good to be true, especially given how good the vegetarian Curry’s and dishes were that we tried here tonight.

First things first, food options are limited but tastes good. However; quantity, quality, decor, service vs. price charged for each item is not a match. For example 12 dollars for 6 pani puries is a bit too much especially for people who actually know worth on a panipuri. Having said that if you are carving for Indian food it’s one of the best options.

Amazing! We have visited Horn Please several times and not once have they let us down or dropped their standards. Even during their busy times the food was perfect. <br/>Service here is also 10/10<br/>Standout dishes.......<br/>EVERYTHING. <br/>I highly recommend this place. We can’t get enough of it. YUM
Yve Lim
Ambience was nice. However we wouldn't go back. A couple of the dishes were tasty like the rice and Naan but the curries were very dissapointing. The food lacked what we love about Indian food. Spices and flavour. It was all quite bland and creamy. In addition we checked the menu when we got home and they charged us $10 extra by accident! Compared to other Indian restaurants this one is not authentic, and to change such high prices wasn't justified. The service was a bit strange (but could be a cultural thing) but we have had much better service at other Indian places. Not worth the price.
Food For Thought
Horn Please is now a regular destination for dinner. The food is delicious, the staff are great and the place is buzzing especially on a Friday and Saturday night. My favourite dish is the lentil daal which comes with a drizzle of yogurt, you will be fighting to get the first scoop. The butter chicken is divine as is the garlic naan which is bursting full of garlic so the vampires will stay away for the night and maybe the next day. The tandoori chicken is yummy and juicy, good as an entree to share or as part of your main meal and the samosas are always good. When green mangoes are in season give the green mango rolls a try they are nice and quite peppery, though I'm not keen on the mango sauce which I find too sweet so I ask for more chutney instead. Haven't tried the desserts as we are always too full. Drinks are reasonably priced and varied, including ciders and craft beers. The staff are always friendly and efficient, not intrusive and it's fun to watch the movies projected on the wall.

Best Indian I’ve had! Beautiful interior, great staff and experience. Only thing I can say is that the rice that ‘serves 2’ is more suited for one but no problem as we ordered naan too. Will be back :)

I went to Horn Please recently for my farewell dinner before going to a short holiday to Hong Kong. <br/><br/>The venue is vegan friendly. Highlight dish was definitely the cauliflower dish. My friend thought it was chicken and started to eat it and got quite a surprise 😂 who knew cauliflower could taste so good! I would definitely recommend going there to try some different type of Indian dishes!
Natasha
BEST INDIAN IN MELBOURNE! Love Horn Please, and so does everyone I know that I have taken here. The mumbai crispy rolls, garlic naan, and don't even start me on the daal! So good! Service is always brilliant, the hosts make you always feel welcome! Plus they have prosecco, they can do no wrong!

Love this place. Delicious food. Particularly enjoyed the beer & fridge situation.<br/><br/>Went here with my parents and loved every minute. Glad the rents paid though ;)

I’ve been wanting to come to Horn Please for ages and I finally got the chance to go tonight with a Meetup group. I don’t normally eat much Indian food but I crave it sometimes. We were thinking of ordering the feed me option so we were asking the waiter questions about the feed me menu and we felt our questions weren’t really answered, maybe there was a language barrier. Most of us also didn’t feel like paying $50 a head for food so we all ordered individually. <br/><br/>Reading the menu I was going to try something I haven’t tried before but I heard the butter chicken here is to die for. The butter chicken was certainly one of the best I’ve ever tried. It was mildly spiced but still flavoursome and creamy. I’m normally put off by Indian restaurants because most of the ones I’ve been to serve curries that are mostly sauce and hardly any meat however they were generous enough with the meat at Horn Please. The rice and naan that accompanied our dishes was also nice, I especially like garlic naan. <br/><br/>Besides the trouble with ordering the people working here were friendly enough. I’d love to come back here for the butter chicken and to try other dishes. <br/><br/>
Rogeritsbathtime
0.5 marks lost because they brought out mains before our entrees and never actually got one of our dishes. But otherwise the food and the service was 10/10. The Dahl was full of flavour - the goat curry was tender. The tandoori chicken, was worth the 45 minute wait! This place is one of the best places I have eaten at recently. The service was impeccable. Thanks guys!
"JT" Jeffrie Trika
Yes, it is named after a HORN or two ....<br/><br/>There are two horns to play for on the counter .... great, clean cut, high ceiling dining area, smartly set up and minimally decorated, however the best part are the food between 7-8/10, especially the cost between the 4 of us, 3 main meals, 3 Naans and rice to share for about $20.00/person.<br/><br/>Service can be a little abrupt, but bring a good wine as BYO is $10/bottle .... Bhoj sukriya. JT-08/11/2017.

I’ve been here a few times now. Indian with a twist and some really lovely flavours. The Indian nachos were not what I expected, but delicious!<br/>Lots of vego options and good service. Awesome with a group and plenty of space.
Donna
Everything we ordered off the menu was super tasty. The cauliflower entree was a standout! Probably my favourite Indian restaurant in Melbourne.
Daniel
Absolutely fantastic !! Will definately be back soon as possible.Service was also great and very helpful with suggestions. But whatever you order is awesome so you can't go wrong anyway.
Leonie D'Alessandro
The food was quite good particularly the cauliflower starter and the goat main course but unfortunately it was spoilt by the rude service. The staff kicked us out at 9:15pm on a Wednesday night. <br/>Flicking the lights, taking all our glassware away switch water still in it and bringing us the bill without us asking for it.<br/>It definitely has put us off coming back.

Located in Northern Fitzroy, Horn Please separates itself from traditional Indian restaurants with its no boundaries approach to dining. Owner and head chef Amar Singh takes dishes from various regions of India, then makes them his own with unique spices and stunning presentation. All meals can be paired with one of the many exotic drinks that the restaurant have to offer.
FattyM
Great authentic indian food!! As soon as i walked in, all i could smell was herbs and spices that i have never smelt before (first time having proper indian food). Great first experience and would definitely going to be back! Must order the naan - garlic was my favourite!

Service was very good and food was quick and delicious. Staff were very easy to deal with. Also helpful with the menu. Loved being able to self serve the beer fridge and the venue was tidy and roomie A+

If you're looking for a funky restaurant with a bit of a twist, then you need to try this place! We visited "Horn Please" for dinner on a busy Saturday night. Their delicious menu includes an extensive list of Indian fusion dishes. <br/><br/>We started the night with Beetroot Paneer Tikka and Gol Gapper. We highly recommend both! The beetroot paneer tikka was fresh, tender and sweet. The Gol Gapper was a standout -simply described as a flavour & texture bomb!<br/><br/>For mains we ordered the Butter Chicken Curry and The Horn Please Dhal. The butter chicken was full of flavour with tender chicken pieces. The Horn Please dhal with black lentil, garlic and ginger simmered all day and cooked further atop the tandoor was delicious, soft and rich in flavour. We had these dishes with rice and serves of garlic and chives naan. <br/><br/>We finished the night with their very creamy and refreshing home made Kulfi Indian ice cream (cardamom, honey and pistachio flavour) and the Gulab Jamun Indian donuts made of soft cheese and sweet syrup.<br/><br/>Overall, we really enjoyed our dining experience at Horn Please. The decor was modern and the place had a great atmosphere. The Indian portraits and an Indian movie that was projected onto the wall created a funky yet traditional feel to the place.

Great Indian food with a contemporary touch. I just simply loved how different it was to the standard Indian food you have at the usual places in Melbourne. I've been here twice now on special occasions and each time I'm so glad I took the trek! Definitely recommend!!!

My husband liked his dinner, I guess cause his not Coeliac his ok. <br/><br/>I on the other hand advised the waiter that I was Coeliac and am allergic to gluten. He looked at me as if I was stupid. I said please make sure it's all gluten free because I will be extremely ill!! Not even an hour later I am in that much pain I can't move! It states on their menu to advise of allergies which I did! It obviously wasn't communicated! I am now going to be in pain and sick all night! Extremely unhappy! Definitely won't be going back!

Horn Please is a funny name for a restaurant. Why call it this?<br/>Answer : Horn Please, named after the hand-painted slogan on the back of vehicles in India.<br/>BUT the food here is a true delightful experience or rather an authentic journey to India. <br/>You must try the Tandoori chicken which is far from the visual or flavours of the average tandoori foods provided from other Indian restaurants.<br/>Every person we have recommended this restaurant too has been overwhelmed by<br/>the visit. You will need to book for dinner and I believe they do lunchtime.<br/>
Good Food Good Mood
Horn Please had been on my radar ever since I heard about their all you can eat $25 Sunday dinner so I was delighted when then invited me to come check them out. I was wowed by the interiors upon entering, this is not your standard local Indian restaurant. A Bollywood film projects on two different walls of the venue creating a really immersive atmosphere and the smoky fireplace evokes a sense of homeliness and warmth. Dim modern pendant lighting, high ceilings and gorgeous bright portraiture with an abstract twist are displayed on the walls alongside some beautiful photography. <br/>I was curious about the name and it was explained with some cultural context. On busy Indian roads where there is not necessarily a rear view mirror or fantastic brakes your horn is the most important thing, you have to honk to let drivers know you are there behind them. Apparently all trucks in India have a sign that says 'Horn Please'. Pretty cool. We started with the samosas which had just the right amount of spice. A well balanced generous filling with a lovely chutney drizzled over it. I actually would have preferred a less refined presentation in favour of more sauce to dip into but nonetheless delicious. <br/>The second dish was tandoori chicken but not as you know it. Visually it was not the vibrant red Westerners have come to expect of the dish. The shade and the flavour was far more subtle. But it was absolute perfection. We were told to eat quickly to ensure the juiciness of the chicken. It was beautifully marinated and a deliciously large portion easily shareable between three for an entree. A traditional dish executed so simply in such a standout way. We utterly loved it. <br/>For mains we shared the butter chicken (obligatory) and the village lamb curry accompanied by garlic naans. The meat in both dishes was super tender and there was plenty of flavour packed into both pots. The sauce for me in the butter chicken was a creamy sensation. I could have eaten it like a soup (I actually kind of did and I'm not even embarrassed about it). <br/>Super full by this point we ended on a sweet note with the most mind blowing chai of my life. There was so many different delicious spices creating a party in my mouth and the scent made me feel like I was wandering the streets of a bustling bazaar. The perfect end to the meal and an ideal winter warmer on such a rainy Melbourne night. <br/>Don't make the mistake of not making a reservation as the place was utterly packed from 6pm for the entire duration we were there and it was only a Thursday night. It's very well staffed to keep up with this demand and the dishes do come out quite quickly. I spied at least ten different people milling about the partially visible kitchen and the restaurant floor so you are in good hands.<br/>A must eat for an authentic dining experience in a fun modern setting. The tandoori chicken with its stunning raita and mint chutney accompaniments is not to be missed

An absolute gem in the middle of Melbourne.   From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by warm friendly staff and shown to a comfortable table for two.  The restaurant walls were decorated with gorgeous Indian photos and an old Indian movie was playing up on the wall and ceiling.  There was so much charm about the place.  The food was stunning.  We started with their version of an Indian Taco (this is an absolute must), followed by sauteed spiced cauliflower and their version of crab cakes in beetroot sauce (another absolute must) followed by a stunning Butter Chicken Curry, lamb curry and naan.   We also ordered a side of dahl and it was the best lentil dahl I have ever eaten, full of flavour and deliciously creamy.    We topped off our meal with a gorgeous bottle of white wine.   Overall, it was a fantastic experience.   The team at Horn Please have created a really wonderful Indian establishment which delivers on service, food, ambience and price.   We will definitely be back.

Located in the very trendy suburb of North Fitzroy, Horn Please offers locals a taste of authentic Indian with a decidedly modern twist.<br/>Despite being on the pricier side of traditional Indian cuisine, what you do pay for are flavours specifically tailored towards a western palate, as well as the utilisation of quality ingredients throughout every dish, the results of which are evident in every bite.
Sree Hari Shete
Amazing service and some really good Indian food. Not very spicy, and very flavourful. Do try their selection of wines as well! The experience with the ambience was overall a good experience!

Have been here many times and have never disappointed. Ate there tonight and once again all our meals were great. A bit more expensive than the average Indian food but so worth it.

Went there about 3 weeks back with a group of 4. The fit-out and ambiance is very nice and inviting. Based on the Zomato ratings, we thought we the food would also match the interiors, however we were left extremely disappointed (and made me question the other reviews). <br/><br/>Seems like restaurant is targeted towards European tastes (being Indian, we expected authentic flavors). When we asked if they could make the main dishes spicy - the owner who was serving us replied by saying that everything was pre-made and could not be varied. I found that to be a very odd response as you would expect the food to be made fresh for each order. <br/><br/>All of the dishes lacked any bite or freshness. The worst part was that the Goat Ghuna Goa Masala and the Village Lamb curry tasted exactly the same - seems like they use the same exact curry base. <br/><br/>Overall too much time spent on presentation and not enough on taste. Would definitely not go back.

We went here with friends who really liked it. Indian with an interesting twist. Service is very friendly. The beer fridge is cool! Meat is free range and halal. Food was yummy, especially their take on nachos and the butter chicken. Would go back for the Sunday's local buffet for $25.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
North Fitzroy stalwart Horn Please was originally opened by Jessi and Jennifer Singh back in 2012, quickly becoming popular for its tasty Indian fare. The husband and wife team has since handed the reigns over to Amar Singh, who has also taken over Dhaba at the Mill in Kyneton. Now both owner and head chef, Amar Singh continues to cook up traditional dishes from different regions of India, but with a bit of a twist.

Horn please is a great Indian joint with some really tasty food . We had a special Sunday buffet with goat curry , butter chicken fine basmati rice and Punjabi kardi ( less seen in Melbourne) with makhani dal .. The Fish Amritsari with beetroot paneer starters made things great with Shiraz .. To end it with amazing Kulfi .. A must visit again ..

Went to Horn Please on a Friday night, around 7pm, and it was absolutely amazing. Four of us ordered two entrees (their nachos and something else I forget the name of), one curry each and a serving of the rice. Was initially a little bit hesitant about the prices but definitely worth it in the end! <br/>Delicious food, wonderful vego options, amazing service (thoroughly impressed with their attentiveness) and a comfortable and pleasing space! Will for sure go again or try their take out service next time! <br/>One slight fault, curries size could be slightly bigger for price, but coupled with rice we were very full regardless!

mamager was rude. kept us waiting for 15 minutes and after 15 minutes told us pram will not be allowed. it seems that they dont like parents with little kids
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
Nice space and fit out. The $25 buffet meal looked like good value. Unfortunately I wasn't as wow'd by the food as other reviewers. We found everything salty and couldn't really taste the flavours of the whiptail fish itself (generous serving for appetiser though!) nor of the goat except for the gamy taste of the fat. I've had much better Indian goat curry elsewhere, falling off the bone succulent juicy meat with flavour. There were no bones here, just slightly tough diced up meat with lots of salt used as flavour with the curry and then we were left with this gamy fat taste after the meal... Pappadums also a tad salty and some had a sheen of oil. Overall, friendly service, nice place, but unfortunately didn't hit the spot for us with the food.

Pricey but worth it!! Handmade baked naan and huge pappadams with seeds and spices must to try. Sunday evening deals all you can eat, lots of vegetarian options

Horn Please, Fitzroy north, cuisine - modern Indian. This place has a knack of putting a twist on the most popular Indian dishes and make it even more tastier. Their decor matches their food theme and it is just amazing to see how they play with the common Indian flavors!!! In the photo you can see papdi chaat (Indian nachos), colonel cauliflower (they even have innovative names) and okra fries!! Now these are traditional dishes we have eaten so many times but the modern spin just takes it to the next level. Lots of vegetarian options so no sweat! Absolutely yumm... definitely should be on your list of places to try. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and let me know in the comments what do you think :) @hornplease - as the tag line says "not your typical Indian joint" - 100% agree! Ordered via Ubereats and got the butter chicken, rice and naan. Rice is nice, naan lovely but the curry was below average. Watered down flavour and consistency. The chicken was also low quality. Disappointing for the premium price charged.

The best dal makhani i've ever tasted.  Simple as that. Some nice innovative dishes as well, almost verging on the indo-chinese. It's a little pricier than your average indian take away, but the servings are very generous making it still quite good value.
Suzanne Sharpe
We've been here 3 times and we love love love it!!! Food is divine with both authentic and more unusual dishes on the menu. Easily the best Indian we have been to in Melbourne. Can't wait to go again 😀
Jo Ellen
Sorry guys, the way you discussed and handled our corkage bill wasn't great. It might be better to clearly discuss corkage fees upfront when people arrive so they can decide before opening their bottles. Or maybe don't offer BYO at all if you're going to charge $10/bottle? It's kinda pointless/offers no savings and just left a bad feeling on an otherwise pleasant night.
Monte Hudson
Loved it ordered through uber eats food was hot tasty andquick<br/>These guys are doing a great job and deserve everything that comes there way<br/>My favourite was the butter chicken although the rice was excellent also

Visited a few weeks ago with family. Not impressed with the attitude of the staff (no greetings while entering or leaving the restaurant). We asked if we could have the curries medium but got a blunt "no, we can't, everything here is mild". The mains took a while to come out and we politely asked the wait staff how long it would be to get "its coming, that's why i am changing the plates". Food was average but very poor staff attitude. We are definitely not demanding diners, just didn't feel welcome.

It's been a while since I last had Indian food and after eating here last night I can't really remember why that is! <br/><br/>Flavours were great, everything you expect from Indian food really- spices that you can't put your finger on and that hint of chilli<br/><br/>The staff were super friendly, attentive and provided us with an explanation of exactly what we ordered when it came to the table (although we did order it so you would hope you had a vague idea of what I might be...) On that note though there wasn't much description on the menu as to what is spicy and what wouldn't be, which would have been handy to know. But given how friendly the staff were I'm sure they would happily have given and explanation if we had asked. <br/><br/>Overall, really happy with my dinner here and would recommend it to anyone looking for a nice Indian feed !
Pitted4Lyf
Best Indian in Melbourne. <br/><br/>I could not believe that an Indian restaurant was getting the reviews that this place was so I had to check it out myself, and I was blown away.<br/><br/>The menu is excellent, featuring an "off the street" entree menu and a curry menu. Our entrees were brought out one at a time which I really loved as it allowed you the ability to enjoy each dish individually. The tandoori chicken was the best I've ever had, and the samosas and nachos were equally magnificent.<br/><br/>The curry as expected was delicious, the standout being the coconut fish curry - just wow. <br/><br/>A must for every Melbourne foodie.

Very happy only stumbled upon this as another restaurant was closed! Pleasantly surprised great tasting curries and the best Samosas I've ever tried! Great beer selection too!

I absolutely love coming to Horn Please. On the occasions that we have been here the staff have always been lovely, the service is fast and the food is absolutely delicious.

I finally found my go to Indian restaurant in Melbourne! <br/><br/>I have now visited Horn Please few times and aside from its sister restaurant (Babu Ji) probably won't try anywhere else. <br/><br/>The Indian nachos are different but oh, so so tasty. The sweet molasses and the crunchiness of the chick peas with the raita capture great Indian flavours and makes a great entree.<br/><br/>The rice stands out as a flavoursome accompaniment which in many other places you don't even think about but here, it's fluffy, sweet and delicious. The curries are all tasty and different - the ever popular butter chicken hitting the perfect spot between sweet and sour. <br/><br/>Highly recommend heading to Horn Please the next time you get an Indian food craving!

On my last trip to Moroccan Soup Bar, one of our other options if we didn’t want to bear the crazy queue there was Horn Please, a modern Indian restaurant next doorish in Fitzroy North. Unfortunately it also had it’s own waiting list. I concluded to make it along another time and fortunately, I did. The curries and starters were quick and we could tell they were good quality as well. A great feed for the price even in going for the a la carte option over the buffet one that most diners were going for on this Sunday evening.
Charizard
Had their Papdi Chat, Tandoori Chicken, Dhal and Garlic Naan. The Papdi Chat was appetising, with the chutney and yoghurt making the dish refreshing. The Tandoori Chicken was decent as it was well-cooked as it was served with a mouth-watering charred aroma. It was flavourful but it was not as tender as expected. The Dhal was flavourful but I felt that it was too creamy and was slightly too overwhelming. Lastly, the Garlic Naan was lacking in the charred garlic flavours I was expecting and it was also too oily.
Gazeats
Amazingly different from the normal Indian.. Check out their entrees Indian nachos and the one that comes with shot glasses.. Fish curry one of the best.. Naan on point

The Dahl was the best I have ever had and I would recommend it to the vegetarians out there. The food was tasty and was reasonably priced, will certainly be coming back.
James Fitzgibbon
Great service and awesome food. The man who served us was extremely friendly, we were in a rush and he made everything happen quickly for us. Goat Madras was impeccable. I will certainly be back.

Quite an impressive dining experience, but even better when you accidentally turn up on 'Locals Night'. <br/><br/>Needing a place for our usual monthly dinner, we decided to venture north to try out this place, having been to it's sister restaurant in St Kilda (Babu Ji). Initial impressions of the restaurant (from the outside) make it seem like it's a brunch location that has also expanded to dinner. Once you step inside though, the north indian roots are immediately clear and it reminded us of the previous experience in St Kilda. Going on a Sunday, means it's locals night. That means you can have a buffet style spread (of some of the popular dishes) for just 25$ per person. The spread includes local favourites like butter chicken and beef and lamb curries, but you can also try vegetarian options and their 'horn please' daal. It was a deal too good to refuse and after 2 trips we were left satisfied, with full tummies and smiling faces. Recommend to try the butter chicken and the vegetarian curries, but don't skimp on the vegetarian pickle. Pickup some naan bread on the side and guaranteen you'll have a spread that won't disappoint.<br/><br/>Side note, on locals night, its cash only! The nearest ATM is relatively close, but the local residents can be a little unsavoury. Bring cash ahead and you'll be fine.<br/><br/>Anyways, this is just a solo review, not necessarily the baseline.
Tammy
Great food and service. We had the Beetroot paneer entree, which was amazing! The butter chicken is one of the best we have had. The ambience is nice with an open fire place and the waitstaff are friendly and very attentive. Only let down is that it gets very noisy when busy.
Kate
Horn Please is so yum! We came for dinner on a Thursday night and were pleasantly surprised that we were seated straight away. <br/>The service was very attentive and helpful. The drinks list was really reasonable and well priced. The food really was the highlight though. Favourite dishes were the Dahl and the cauliflower. The cherry on top is the fact that it's BYO - I'll definitely be bringing some wine next time. Love this place - a must try.
Gary Boland
Definitely worth a stop by this place for a good Indian experience. Stopped by on a Sunday for all you can eat buffet for $25, 8 selections to choose from. Very attentive, helpful, friendly staff. Great Naan bread! Very Pleasing aesthetics. Would recommend!
Caitlin Mary
The food was amazing. We had the gal Gappa between two (I think it would be best between 3-4) and the tandoori trout to start. The trout was cooked perfectly. Then the butter chicken and beef for mains with naan bread. The prices are more than you may typically expect for Indian but the quality exceeds all expectations so it is worth it. I thought all butter chicken was the same before horn please. Every piece of meat in dishes was quality, which isnt always the case - particularly with chicken dishes. Id prefer to go here half as often than to a cheaper place twice as often. I was worried about getting a table but it wasn't an issue as a walk in and the staff were lovely an accommodating. Being byo is a bonus also.

If I had to say what cuisine I have for dinner every night it's probably 88% Indian food, I thought it'd be nice to compare all the Indian restraunts that I've been to, so last night I went off to 'Horn Please' in Fitzroy. I was very excited as I always am for a nice Indian meal to sum up the day, the atmosphere of the restraunt looked really organised a neat, it had a very hipster look about it, there was a projected Indian movie on the wall and we realised as soon as we sat down that it was a buffet night, the waiters told us that every Sunday they had a buffet for $25 each! How cool? So I ran up with my plate saying yes to everything they put on my plate (I get really excited at buffets). When I sat down I gobbled down the different curries such as Lemongrass Lamb, Butter Chicken, Pumpkin Curry, Paneer, Beef Curry and my favourite....Horn Please Dahl. The flavours were really unique and tasty, I could taste different seasonings and textures in each curry for example the beef curry had a really nice mint taste to it. I wouldn't expect for it to happen but I finished every single bit on my plate. The naan bread (which isn't part of the buffet) was delicious!! The naan bread was really crispy and tasty. I wouldn't mind going back there again! :)

Been to this place many time . Each dish and presentation is so beautiful. The staff is very friendly and helpful in choosing the good . The have gluten free options available. Looking forward to returning horn please

Don't get caught out with the 9pm closing time!!<br/>We got recommended by the waiter to try the $25 banquet. None of us were told it would close at 9pm, at 8.40 the waiter told us we only had twenty minutes to eat. Which annoyed everyone at the table.
Brunch Diaries
The decor is great however the room is very cold. The food was a let down unfortunately, a real shame, the nan breads are good but the curries are bland.

Horn Please is a modern Indian restaurant in Fitzroy. I call it modern as there are some innovative dishes that are not normally seen in other Indian restaurants. The restaurant itself is quite large and can be noisy. Not a place for intimate conversations. The service was attentive and you can clearly see that they are proud of their dishes and so they should be. Easy to get a seat without booking on a week night and parking was easy enough too. They have a limited menu which is good in my books as this probably means that they are specialised enough to provide good quality. They have a good wine selection as well as allowing BYO.

Sister of babuji does not disappointed!!! One of my top must try Indian food in Melbourne. <br/><br/>Horn please is beautifully decorated and modern. Great range of menus just like babuji in St kilda. <br/><br/>Services were lovely. We started with samosa (huge.. Huge samosa!) tasted amazing, great pastry, generous filling .. But couldn't finished it. We then moved on to papdi chat (Indian nachos they said) this is our favorite dish still. So refreshing with the yoghurt sauce. Great pastry. Taste buds dancing everywhere. By this we were already pretty full.. Main came, generous served of mixed nans (amazing by the way) and daal (best curry they have - in my opinion) and beef curry. All exceptional. <br/><br/>The service forgot our main and we ended up waited for a long time for it.. This is the only bad thing about that night. Or else 5 stars for everything else. Will return! And cannot wait to :)

Excellent! Came on a Sunday and were informed that there was a buffet on. All of the currys were delicious! Fantastic range. Few chewy pieces of meat in the beef curry. Staff were efficient and friendly .
Gina
If you love Indian food and you haven't tried this place them you are definitely missing out. The food and the ambience is amazing. Try the golgappa. The flavours in this dish and its presentation will delight you.

Was very excited to try this place out. I've been craving Indian food for awhile now and convinced my partner to join me. <br/>His first words when he had a few bites of our dishes were "Oh my goodness, where has this been all my life?!" He wouldn't stop stuffing his face, it was that good! <br/><br/>We ordered naan bread, tandoori chicken, goat curry & rice. There were 3 types of flavoured naan bread and they were all so delicious. Tandoori chicken was very flavourful and the mint sauce that came with it was AMAZING. I never ever like mint sauce but this one was to die for!! Goat curry was exceptional! I've never tried goat before and was pleasantly surprise. <br/><br/>Overall experience was very good. Will definitely be back for more!

Wonderful delightful exciting nosh!<br/>I was highly anticipating my visit to Horn Please as it had been recommended by two friends who had been there and who are trusted 'foodies'.<br/><br/>Our table decided to go for the $50 per head set menu- to take the anxiety out of choosing a balanced selection of dishes. A super move, as we were served entrees that we would have passed over on the menu and chosen others. <br/><br/>We were given 4 'stArters' and 4 curries and rice and naan. Amazing. I reckon you could just order from the top half of the menu and not even touch the curries. Such wonderful combinations of flavours and textures. <br/><br/>The staff were kind, attentive and helpful.<br/><br/>I am so excited to return and would highly recommend this restaurant. <br/><br/>Parking is out the front of the restaurant.
Heidi
Love horn please, it's just as good as its sister restaurant babuji in st kilda! I'm not not sure which came first but they were both awesome! My far the gol gappa is the best, it's amazing - sweet and spicy. The fish curry is also really good too!
T.Ly
We came for the Horn Please Sunday local's night, which costs $25 (cash only) for all you can eat curries and rice. Unfortunately, naan is extra. Some of the options available were on the menu and some are specials that aren't available every Sunday. There were about 8-9 curry options with seasoned basmati rice and some pickles and hot sauce. There were a selection of different meats like chicken, goat, and beef, along with vegetarian options as well. My initial strategy was to have a little of everything, but I didn't even make it that far. The servers dish out the rice and curries for you, trying to ensure you get a few pieces of meat with each selection, however, there was still a lot of sauce on the plate. Some options stood out compared to others, although a lot of the flavors mixed on the plate. Trying out 6 of the curries left me too full. Overall, I thought the meal was good, however, I find I don't enjoy the fullness of all you can eat options and next time I'll try a la carte.

We've never experienced an Indian restaurant like this one. starting up with a lovely styled dining room with a modern ambience and friendly, knowledgeable staff up to very tasty food. <br/>we sampled the Colonels Cauliflower which had just the right amount of spice next to the butter chicken which...

Trendy place for those who don't like Indian,  and never got past Nouvelle Cuisine <br/>First the positives: Clean, modern, reasonably good service<br/>Then the Buts: Noisy, compact, lacking intimacy<br/>Being vegetarian is often a handicap, and maybe the carnivore's meals were magnificent.....<br/>About 4 - 5 veggie options. The ones we chose were<br/>1. something like a Malai Kofta. A crumbed ball of mashed potatoe in a tasteless brown gravy.  $18<br/>2. Spinach fritters. A bland mix of green stuff  in ?breadcrumbs with a pale sauce.  $16<br/>3. Garlic Naan x 1. $5 acceptable quality but small portion<br/>4. Rice x 1. $5  Good quality long grained with cumin seed. Best part of the meal<br/>Overall: Disappointing, but has the potential to be acceptable/good<br/>There obviously is a market for food lacking taste and a disliking  of chili as the place was half-full at 630pm
Belinda
We loved this place. We really would have loved the set menu but they only make it for 4. However we had a couple of entrées and 2 curries which were all so tasty. The dhal is incredible, so much flavour. We didn't have room for dessert as the servings are quite big. But will definitely be back and will save room next time.
Janelovesabite
This place is great! A much better than average Indian restaurant. Great decor and delicious banquet, although the samosas were huge which made me feeling too full and unable to do the rest of the banquet justice. Their "Indian Nachos" are delicious. Their BYO policy was very confusing however they have a decent wine list which is reasonably priced, so next time will just order from their wine menu.
Foodie
This is not your usual Indian restaurant. It has an aussie twist to the Indian dishes - so when you compare it with other Indian restaurants, you need to be careful. With that out of the way, we were a group of 4 who went in on a friday night:<br/><br/>1. Portion sizes were good and really filling<br/>2. This restaurant appears to want to fill the empty spot of a 'Fine Dining' Indian restaurant. "Shakahari" is not an Indian restaurant, so I consider this space in Melbourne empty. I think it is on its way to filling that spot -good try.<br/>3. The wait staff and the manager/owner were very helpful with the menu and attentive. I always worry a bit about being Indian and going to an Indian restaurant - often there is a concern that you won't be treated well and the focus will be on the natives (A friend of mine who used to work in 'Balti' in Lygon told me that is what his boss used to tell him!) - nothing of that sort here. The service was professional and spotless.<br/>4. Taste of the food in general was good and acceptable. Not the greatest Indian meal I have had in Melbourne, but pretty good and up there with the better ones. Don't except some crazy spicy 'normal' Indian food! The food tasted fresh and imminently cooked. LIMITED menu - Gordon Ramsay will be proud and that is way it should be, rather than have a million things and being a hit and a miss. Like some smart restaurants, perhaps mix it up according to the seasons. <br/>5. Huge space, nice interiors (for a change, no gaudy traditional drapery everywhere!)<br/>6. Highly recommended.
Katvkis
Delicious food. Indian food is one of my favourite cuisines, so I could have it any way but the way these guys make their dishes is definitely one of the 'lighter' styles of Indian cooking which makes it able to cater for everyone, even those who wouldn't necessarily opt for Indian normally. Mouthwatering dishes and lovely staff, will definitely be back!
Erin
Really different Indian restaurant - creamy, tasty curries and beautiful produce. Curries can be spoiled if poor meat is used, but here all the proteins were great. Fish curry, butter chicken, and naans all highly recommended. Will be back. Nice setting and atmosphere.
