A bit pricey but great tastes
The decor is very unique. The glass roof gives the place a feeling of convent.
Staff was very attentive and classically trained, which gives a very nice touch.
I ordered the duck breast and it was amazing. The skin was crispy, the meat was cooked to perfection. The addition of the rhubarb purée gave a perfect balance to the dish. Faultless!
I ordered the banofee tart for dessert. It was perfect too. Crumbly base, caramelised bananas, honeycomb and enough fruit coulis to balance it out perfectly.
If you are looking for a quiet, intimate and romantic restaurant, this is it.
Been here twice, both for celebration occassions. I love the atmostphere and so good for catch up as each table has plenty of space. Price point wasn't too high compared to other 5-star hotel restaurants.
Staff were welcoming and all food was well-presented and tasty in general. Dish could be more creative and it was a bit conservative to my opinion. But I do understand this is in a hotel that has to fit in with international taste bud.
My favourite was the beef sirloin so tender and melted in your mouth with every bite.
Great place for a night out.
Beautiful setting, amazing, professional service and such delicious food. Really worth the money. Best scones I have tasted to date. So fresh and crumbly. The tart was scrumptious. Pate out of this world. What a lovely dining experience the Clarke Sisters afternoon tea was.
I was lucky enough to attend the media launch of the Intercontinental’s new pre theatre dining and receive a sneak preview of the menu. This was even more special to me because I am a huge Harry Potter fan and the menu is themed for the Cursed Child play that has just opened in Melbourne.
For $56 you get main, dessert, coffee and chocolates. The main is a smoked beef striploin from under a theatrical cloche served with vine tomatoes and baby heirloom carrots. Delicious but dessert was my favourite. A lemon treacle tart served with a spectacularly refreshing sorbet.
This is encased in a dark chocolate orb which melts to reveal the tart as your drizzle the sauce on top. The tart itself was silky smooth perfection and the crumb on the plate was as excellent flavour accompaniment and provided another yummy textural element. Safe to say it tasted as good as it looked!
Original review
The only thing that makes me happier than fusion food is high tea and as such I am always on the lookout for a new offering. Yesterday the Intercontinental hotel relaunched its high tea in the Alluvial restaurant with the dessert served buffet style.
You can enjoy an endless supply of sweet treats including donuts, macarons and cakes complete with chocolate fountain. Oh and there's also a lolly station. The high tea stand itself was enjoyable and I particularly loved the lemon curd that was served with the scones alongside jam and cream but there were several elements that weren't up to par for me.
Whilst the champagne was served in stunning stemware the tea itself arrived in ugly ceramic pots. Where was the beautiful china? The offered unlimited tea which is a bonus but it was a teabag in a (hideous) pot. For goodness sake it's high TEA it has to be loose leaf I mean I don't even serve myself teabags at home.
The chocolate brownie with peanut butter was delectable but the carrot cake a little lacklustre. The desert buffet was immaculately set out and visually stunning and attention to detail was strong but the little things such as a credit card surcharge let's them down
Had a nice dining experience here recently to try the special Harry Potter multicourse dinner.tbe staff are incredibly professional and food was nicely presented. I did not try the steak main course, although my friend spoke fondly of it. I was, however, quite pleased with my lemon tart topped with a melting chocolate sphere. The composition of this dish was beautiful. If you're staying at the Intercontinental or simply want to check out the hotel's interesting interior, the Alluvial is a good choice.
Rating: 3.8 - 4
Food:
- Barramundi: the fish was nice and tender but not mushy. All of the green went well with the fish and the fragrance was just to die for. However, it’s a little oily (probably from the fish?) which I don’t really mind in this case.
- Dessert (chocolate mousse?): very rich but because it has some sort of fruity components to it, it was still ok to handle.
- My family tried a couple of different dishes. They all look really good. I heard that the steak was nice and tender. Generally, not super impressive but because of the atmosphere, everything was really pleasant.
Price: A little pricy but given the location, the beautiful deco and reasonably quality food, I think it’s fine.
Service: friendly and attentive staff. Food came out at reasonable pace.
Ambience: very beautiful restaurant with nice modern deco. Open dining area which makes it look really spacious and also helps with ventilation.
it was located on the FL level. It was very quiet when I came there. The host was friendly , and we ordered grilled salmon fillet and stirloins, chose the medium level for the meat. Ambience was comfy and nice design.
A degustation-styled high tea in the luxurious Alluvial Restaurant, The Clarke Sisters’ High Tea takes place on weekends in the opening dining area of the Intercontinental Hotel of Melbourne, with an array of the finest teas, savoury bites and desserts guaranteed to satisfy the highest of standards. From beginning the end, the food was complemented by impeccable service, and a modern-esque ambiance.
We recently came for afternoon tea and it was a wonderful experience. Service was amazing, food was so delicious and the location is simply stunning. The scones were so light and flaky and buttery, some of the best I have ever eaten. This is a wonderfully indulgent experience well worth the price.
We attended Alluviel as a groupon voucher deal. For the $50 bucks we paid we couldn’t complain. There was free flowing bubbles, free flowing tea/ coffee and delish food. Would have enjoyed some more savoury foods however what was offered was really nice . Service was great, courteous and friendly . Our group had a great afternoon there and we will return .
Extremely courteous service from the staff. The dessert bar was a nice touch, but more savoury items for the high tea would have been better.
Located within InterContinental The Rialto hotel, you'll find this gem. Little on the pricey side (expected being in a 5 star hotel, I'm just a tight arse) with some wonderful meals and a fantastic wine selection. I ordered the Seafood pasta and my mate the house burger. Big meals and both left the restaurant satisfied.
Located within InterContinental The Rialto hotel, Alluvial Restaurant pleases with a great selection of dining options. One of which is the Mrs d’Ebro’s high tea offering. . The high tea takes visitors back to 1890 when Melbourne was one of the richest cities in the world and Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was taking the world by storm.
First time experiencing high tea and was very enjoyable. The staff were super friendly, setting was very intimate. Food came out very quickly - Scones were delicious. There was unlimited champagne, tea and coffee and a dessert buffet to finish the experience.
Solid food, beautiful venue, excellent service!
We actually were here on Valentine's day so we got ourselves a special 4-course menu just for the day.
We started the evening with the Kingfish Ceviche (3.5/5 points) which was great. The fish was fresh, the taste was light and fragrant. The cucumber ribbons were lovely to go with the fish. The hint of lime was subtle but enjoyable as well. Overall a great entree dish!
Next, we got the Eggplant Caviar (3/5) which definitely a step-up in flavour. The taste of goat cheese and eggplant caviar was definitely stronger. There were some bits of tomato jelly and fresh tomato which did freshen up the taste and brought it to a balance.
For the mains, Luke grabbed the fried barramundi (3/5) which was lovely. The fish was moist, tender, and cooked just right. The accompany smashed chat potato was great to go with the fish. However, Luke found the carrots/orange sauce to be slightly too sweet.
Hannah ordered the sirloin (3/5) cooked to medium rare for her main. It was good but nothing too special though. The meat was tender and cooked right to request. The juis, however, slightly too sweet again. The meat also lacked a bit of smokiness / that charred taste.
To finish the evening, we got the Poached Pear Mille-Feulle as dessert which came with some lemon lime sorbet. The pastry was lovely - very flaky and light which went well with the vanilla custard. The lime sorbet was refreshing however slightly too bitter occasionally for our taste.
The venue was beautiful with high-ceiling and impressive lightning. Our waiter (Anthony) was very friendly, attentive, and charming with his French accent.
There’s a scene in Series 2 of Australian Princess where contestant Kylie surmises that High Tea involves getting high and having tea. I wasn’t quite that bad, but was welcomed to my very first one at a launch event for the InterContinental Melbourne’s new offering at Alluvial. Joined by other food bloggers, industry, press and other important looking people, we were treated to bubbles, amazing teas, service with character and visual spectacle on every corner. And the food.
Each bite is an indulgence and the cake tiers included mini beef Wellington, sandwiches, scones, bagels and croquettes. If that wasn’t enough, there were tables of unlimited donuts, macarons, cakes, brownies, mousses, cheesecake, fruit and fondue. And a candy bar. We left wholly impressed, completely stuffed and we would recommend going based on our experience. I now have an appreciation for this intriguing society course and will be sure to check it out a few more times!

High Tea at InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto is moving home. Now residing at Alluvial, it also has expanded dessert options. The inspiration for this High Tea is Mrs D’Ebro, a society lady who hosted elaborate afternoon teas in her Toorak home. Research was undertaken to look into the types of foods, champagne and literature that the society of that era would have indulged in. The experience begins with Perrier-Jouët Champagne, and tea throughout is from TWG. Earl Grey and Silver Moon, a blend of green teas, berry and vanilla, are highlights, but other options include English Breakfast and Moroccan Mint.
High Tea at the InterContinental will have a new home starting from the 21st of January 2017. The new location at the Alluvial Restaurant means that the offering will be enhanced with the addition of a dessert buffet, chocolate fountain and lolly bar.
Decadent high tea in the grand open surroundings of the Rialto. Food was good although I have to question the choice of a deep fried prawn on the menu, this seemed a bit odd and I would have preferred another pastry item. Macarons and scones were lovely. Service could have been better as we had to ask for tea orders and there was only one other table dining. An indulgent afternoon good for a special occasion.
Alluvial Restaurant is in Intercontinental Hotel and so far only two people have written about it. Here they are a high class place and we were invited to dine there for their newest high tea which was the 1890's High tea. This high tea is Edwardian and was with champagne and a new orange cocktail which had a lot of alcohol.
The impeccable service, coupled with the amazing food and drinks, all hosted in a beautiful venue, made for perhaps one of the best high tea experiences I’ve ever attended.
For a relaxed and indulgent afternoon, full of olden-day comforts and delectable food, I can think of no better way to celebrate than High Tea at Alluvial.
I simply cannot wait for them to officially launch on 21st January 2017, as I will definitely be back for more of those divine scones, and more.
We’d like to thank Intercontinental Hotel Melbourne for inviting us to the launch of their new high tea experience at Alluvial.
High Tea by InterContinental Melbourne will have a new home in the Alluvial Restaurant, nestled between the Rialto and Winfield heritage buildings which once was a laneway. . The new move will allow the accommodation of a chocolate fountain, dessert buffet and lolly bar. The offering is a modern interpretation of the lavish afternoon teas served in the 1890s by Mrs D’Ebro, a society lady married to London-born Melbourne based architect Charles D’Ebro, who designed the Winfield Wing of the hotel’s building. With the assistance of the Genealogical Society of Victoria, they re-created the menu to reflect what they would have indulged in during that era at Mrs D’Ebro’s estate in Toorak, with Head Chef Clint Jackson’s contribution of scones adapted from an old family recipe.
Great decor and ambiance. Ordered the pork belly. Presentation was nice and tastes so soft and the crackling on the side went so well with it. Staff were also friendly.
I went to Alluvial Restaurant yesterday for high tea! You can choose either a high tea or a high coffee. The high tea comes with champagne while the high coffee comes with a Espresso Martini, since I don't like coffee I went for the high tea with champagne!!
There were 12 of us at this high tea, and the staff coped well to accommodate for this big group. There was a high tea stand made for every 4 or 3 people. What I loved about Alluvial though was how accommodating they were for the vegetarians who attended this high tea meetup. Alluvial hadn't been told prior about preferences but they still organised individual high tea stands for each person who wanted a vegetarian option! Well done! For those sharing a stand it was no problem since there was a lot of food on these stands! We didn't even end up eating it all, that's how much there was!
Highlights were definitely the macaroons. The chocolate cake was a disappointment, was way too rich even for my tastes! The pie I found to be dry.
The staff provided excellent customer service. The waitress was really chatty and lovely!
Was very pleasantly surprised by the food there. We had a three course meal which was one of the best I've had in a while. Very descent serve sizes. The dessert was average in comparison to the entrees and mains.
Service was also very up to standard. Great night out.
Stopped here for a quick weekday lunch and we both had steak! It was cooked to perfection! A very quiet place, perfect for those who want somewhere to escape from the noise of the city... and the service was spot on!

At the bar section for drinks and snacks. Best coffee around here on a weekend. Very well mannered staff and the club sandwich is looks regular but yum.
I've eaten breakfast here a number of times and it's probably one of the better ones. The food is always fresh and the egg station do fantastic dishes. Love the bircher muesli here.
Went there for a breakfast buffet and I wasn't disappointed with quality of the food. It was fresh and delicious, especially the savory selection meats and cheeses. The only item missing to make this place a top spot is a proper coffee to be included with the buffet (only nespresso is included...)

Ainsley Harriott is the consumate fun loving celebrity chef, and we were priviledged to be part of a VIP masterclass at the Alluvial Restaurant, InterContinental Melbourne as part of Melbourne Good Food and Wine Show. Yes it's on again - this long weekend of June 5-8 and is a compelling visit. The World Loves Melbourne attended the Melbourne Good Food and Wine Show last year and is amped to visit again. At The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre the attraction is that is it actually a show with numerous displays and demonstrations and classes on offer! And this year noted TV Celebrity Chef Ainsley Harriott is a star attraction and face of the event.
Valentines Dinner went well. An enjoyable all round dining experience. Food was cooked great and with a special set menu for valentines. It was a good variety of food. Look forward to dine here again on a regular menu.
Food was very good as well as the ambience. Unfortunately management seem to have cut down on staff. Therefore the waiters although friendly and attentive were busy.
Breakfast from ala carte at alluvial intercontinental Melbourne on 13th March2022. Great ambience and situated right on where horse carriages carried grain bags once upon a time. Food was average. Coffee was good also the spinach & egg burrito..Another tasty one was the Rialto big breakfast.. disappointed with the portion and taste of pancake stack and 3 eggs omelet.. sure they are experiencing staffing issues like every other business. Can certainly work harder to put great stuff on the table. Best wishes
Stopped in for a cocktail early on Friday afternoon. Lovely service, great cozy atmosphere. Will definitely be back!
Wow! The High Tea is absolutely amazing. The quality of food is really high. The lamb cutlet is simply delicious. The dessert trolley is filled with amazing treats. What makes this experience next level is the awesome staff with their smiling faces, friendly banter and professional service. A must. Highly recommended.
WOULD GO BACK VERY NICE BREAKFAST BUFFET!
HOWEVER, IT WAS WINTER WHEN WE WERE THERE AND THE COLD WIND WAS COMING IN FROM OUTSIDE SO IT WOULD BE GOOD TO HAVE HEATERS NEAR THE TABLES AND SEATS!
Fancy dinner but I believe the portions were very fair for the prices! Thanks Remy and another waitress for kindly serving and making sure everything was alright for us! I highly recommend the grilled pork cutlet.
Lovely food and wine. But probably should let people know that you're charging $13 for a bottle of sparkling water!
Just celebrated Father’s Day and thoroughly enjoyed the Clarke Sisters’ High Tea. This is one of the best high teas we have ever had, and so unique. Not your typical, boring run of the mill high teas. We were looked after so well by the professional staff, never having to wait or ask for anything. My daughter’s food allergies were catered to throughout the meal, which made everything more relaxing for us. Go to this high tea hungry! All the food is beautiful and thoughtfully done, down to the beautiful china and yummy tea leaves in gorgeous tea pots. Highly recommend!
