My score 3.5 stars (avge of many visits). J and I had lunch here on Mon 16th Mar and it was basically empty. Service very good and helpful.
We shared:Whiting fillets w red mayo ($7.80 entrée) – Delicate and clean battered fillets with a nice cabbage salad base. Red mayo was nice but pretty sweet.
Veg and tofu with rice ($10.80 lunch serve) – Nice garlicky gravy, lightly cooked al dente veg and soft tofu puffs. Large rice, but not a huge serve of veg or tofu.
Assam prawns with rice ($13.80 lunch serve) – Nice sized prawns, red onion, tomato, a little pineapple, green beans and okra. Plenty of sour sauce with a touch of chilli heat (I would have liked even hotter, but J thought it was about right).
Oct 2018. Vego Laksa - Is always good, more eggplant than Laksa King next door (and its cheaper), however LK's has a better, spicier broth and more Tofu.
Spicy Chilli Crispy duck on rice - It was crispy and spicy, but also VERY sweet - no mention of that in the description! Plenty of rice, 3 bits of broccoli and generous boneless duck - it was ok, but wouldn't have again because of the sweetness.
Other visits - Free tea is nice, place always seems noisy whether busy or not. Nasi Lemak w chicken - Is less generous than LK, but bigger than MY Tofu's (around corner) - one of my fav bits of Nasi L is the Sambal anchovies, but CL's are the "fishiest" and least crispy I've ever had, so not to my taste.
Fried KT - Smaller than LK's, but nicer, spicier and less oily.

Heard so much about this place from friends and finally went last Sunday! I usually have high standards on Malaysian food / Asian food and happy to report that Chef Lagenda meets all my standards! I had the fish fillet soup noodles and A had the wok fried flat noodles in egg gravy (?!?) i.e. Wa Tan Hor 😂. Portions are HUGE (and by huge I mean HUGE) A is a big eater but even then he acknowledged that the serving size is bigger than your usual Asian restaurants.

🍰 Fish Fillet Noodle Soup was everything you’d expect it to be - salty, creamy, full of umami from the fish broth and they were generous in the fish fillets!

🍰 Flat Noodles in Egg Gravy was so good too. The fried noodles had the wok flavour that it a telltale sign that it’s a good one.

And what’s SpaceforCakes if she doesn’t have a room for dessert? We shared a sago pudding and omg guys. It’s SO DAMN GOOD.

If you’re thinking whether or not to get it, GET IT.

Definitely will be back again!

PS: friends highly recommend their curry laksa too!

I came here recently for first time and GLAD I did!
Moments earlier I was at the next door eatery being forced to sit 'squashed' between strangers with no room to breathe. I didn't order, left and walked next door to this place.
I noticed the difference here instantly. A smaller place but quieter with pleasant background music...yet more space!
I was treated with respect by a waitress straight away. Friendly. Attentive. I was shown a table next to the outdoor roller door where staff occasionally walk in and out. Slightly annoying, but I happily put up with it compared to next door's bad experience.
I ordered the food and drink. Seafood soup was AMAZING in taste. These people know how to combine seafood items in their soup to achieve a tasty balance. The strawberry green tea turned out to be a delicious unique drink. Waitress passing by saw my drink had more green tea, very helpful to instruct me to mix it with thick straw to get the full taste.
My meal and drink was Delicious. Affordable pricing.
Comfortable eating experience with space to breathe, calm with no feeling of being 'rushed' to finish meal as is the production line 'squashy' eatery next door!
YES. Hooray.. I'm happily sticking to this place. I'll be back.

The Laksa’s here are just as good if not better than laksa king.
I found that any other item of food I’ve ordered off the rest of the menu is better thanks laksa king too. Not as busy either and very good service.

A friend and I came here last night, I had been here many moons ago but am happy that I decided to come back.

A great menu with good service, although I did find it slightly bizarre that they gave us the bill at the start when we just finished ordering.

We ordered the pork dumplings to start with that were really delicious and there were soooo many, they were also really big! The salt and pepper squid was really tender and tasty along with the Chinese broccoli.  The stand out for me was the beef rendang.  I have finally found a place in Melbourne that serves up a flavoursome rendang and the beef was so tender.

Great portions on the food here, really good value for money.

Dare I say it - this place upstages its brilliant competitor next door Laksa King, though the difference between these two is marginal. Their serving sizes are bigger with the same great taste and authenticity. Laksa king might shade this place slightly for their laksa (surprise surprise) but Chef Lagenda has it over them for their rice dishes, in particular their signature Nasi Lemak. A great example of competition benefiting the customer! Unbelievably good food and it doesn’t look like changing anytime soon!

Chef Lagenda never disappoints me in terms of food. I am glad to know a place to go when I feel like good bowl of laksa although it is very rich that I often need days after having one to crave another. I also like their seafood tomyum noodle which comes with generous amount of seafood. This place is popular so you sometimes have to wait to be seated or wave your hand long to get attention from the floor staffs when you need extra sauce or water but generally they are friendly and fast at serving food.

Yum yum yum!!! Cannot get enough!!! It's right next door to laksa king (the same owners I've heard??) and I would say it is the "cheaper" restaurant, but don't let that deter you. The food is excellent!!!! Take a table at either if you can get in!

One of two quality Malaysian restaurants in Melbourne. The laksa is just sensational. The broth is flavoursome, the eggplant melts in your mouth and chicken pieces tender. The other menu options are also really good.... and we have seriously tried most. Best of all is the very affordable price tag. This place is an all rounder!

Absolutely love this place, my family and friends constantly come here. Great service and food is always amazing and cheap. However, the one thing they need to change is to remove 'babur cha cha' from their menu. Such a horrible dessert and I know it is not meant to taste like that. Three of us had to spit it out of our mouths and we are not the type of people to do that at any circumstance but it was horrible and not tasting anything like the ingredients taste like when they are fresh. Maybe this might be because no-one actually does order it (which is a good decision on their behalf) but we ordered the last of the sago pudding and couldn't order another one so we decided to try the babur cha cha. Won't waste another $6 on it again and at least we have learnt from our mistakes. Don't get me wrong, Chef Lagenda is one of my favourite restaurants and I will continue to go there till I die. But they need to remove that terrible dessert because it is just a let-down to the restaurant and a waste of food (we felt horrible leaving it almost untouched). Definitely try the sago pudding, it is amazing :)

Came here for an early dinner with friends on a Thursday evening. We had a booking and were comfortably seated upstairs near the air conditioning, which was a nice reprieve from the balmy weather outside. The place gets very busy very quickly - unsurprising given the efficiency of the service and the tastiness of the food. We came for laksa and we were not disappointed. I had the chicken laksa - the soup had the perfect spicy kick that kept you going back for more until you hit the bottom of the bowl; there was a lot of chicken and noodles (I had to take my leftovers away in the end); the eggplant and fried tofu pieces in the laksa also added a nice touch. Overall, a wonderful and authentic Malaysian place serving up authentic food just a stone’s throw from the CBD. Highly recommended!

Always good food whenever we go here, they never disappoint. Their head waitress Steph is really nice and accommodating. Everything on their menu is yummy and price is very reasonable. However we noticed that they have recently changed their menu - added new stuff and also a price increase in their meals as well ($1-2). They also charge you now for tea at .50 cents per person (it used to be free) and not sure if it was just that night when we ate or if they have actually decreased their available condiments as well.

Had lunch with a Malaysian friend. I ordered laksa and kuey teow. Kuey teow was properly chargrilled and nice with flavour you find only in Malaysia. Laksa was alright but I have tried better ones, my friend was a big fan of fried chicken. Location is nice and food is cheap I recommend a visit for Asian food .

Chef Lagenda has a bit of a legendary status in Melbourne to get your Malaysian fix, but keep your expectations in check.
It really depends what type of dish you’re going to get.
As expected, it’s super busy, and remember, if you don’t want to pay a card surcharge, bring cash.
* Steamed Assam Fish – I love assam anything, it’s like being punched in the mouth with flavour. The fishy, tangy, sour, spicy, pungent flavours are there.
* Green Vegies w Oyster & Garlic – A simple dish, but has depth of flavour from the fried garlic. It’s not just sauce poured over boiled veggies, they’ve properly cooked it through.
* Braised tofu w Chinese mushrooms – Nice and clean dish to balance out the
* Hainanese Chicken – the chicken rice is actually quite flavourful, made with chicken stock. The chicken itself is quite juicy and meaty, and the complimentary side soup is clean and tasty.

Great option for people this side of the city, but I wouldn’t travel from the east / SE side for it.

Being really disappointed with Laksa King lately, I have decided to try Chef Lagenda. I had two crazy and tired kids so I decided to quickly do a phone order to get takeaway. They happy let me do that and by the time I got there, the order is ready.

Seeing that I was wrangling two kids they even gave me a free bag of prawn crackers... AND they take credit card (1% surcharge). Compared to Laksa King who doesn’t take credit, what’s not to like about Chef Lagenda?!

We got chicken curry which was tender and full of flavour with a serious kick. The char kwuey tiao was nice, although I asked for extra spicy it wasn’t as spicy as I liked. The chiffon egg combination noodles

When I was at Laksa King last time I seen Chef Lagenda a few doors down. Did some reading, seen some good reviews so I decided to give the place a go.

The place is cosy and there is also an upstairs area. The place was busy even towards the end of a Tuesday night when we visited.

I ordered a custom noodle meal with egg noodles, Laksa broth and roast duck and steamed chicken on the side. The Mrs ordered the Beef Rendang with rice. We also got some satay skewers to start with.

The skewers came out quick and were cooked to perfection. The meat was tasty and juicy and the accompanying sauce was very nice too. A sweet Satay, not too peanutty.

My noodle soup came out after. The noodles were cooked fine. The Laksa broth was very nice however there was little broth. I love the broth so I asked for a top up and the staff were accommodating. The accompanying meat was of a generous serving and I had no complaints with flavours.

The beef rendang was last to come out, perhaps maybe even forgotten by staff. However the waitress was very attentive and noticed the missing meal as I was eating my soup. She immediately chased it up with the kitchen and brought it out. The beef was very nice with a very generous serving of beef. The sauce was nice and mild with excellent rendang flavours. My only criticism would be that the meat was a bit tough, possibly over cooked but otherwise, all good.

Overall, a great place for a good meal at a very reasonable price. Will be back!

I've been coming here for years & only now have I felt the emotional need to write this review.
Thomas (the owner) I met while dining here for the first time many years. And let me tell you I wasnt happy at that very moment.
However Thomas made sure my bday dinner that night was memorable. And every other time I've come here since he's always ensured the top quality of Malaysian food available. Laksa King (right next door) are no match with Chef Lagenda.
The sambal is absolutely divine.
My family love coming here.
I absolutely love the Fried Kway Teow.
The Mrs always orders Hokkein Mee.
I will continue to come here!!!

Came here on a Saturday for a late lunch. Situated just a 5 minutes walk from Newmarket Station, this place is supposedly very busy.

Ambience : 4/5. Got here at 2pm. It was not crowded, comfortable surrounding and were seated immediately. The waitress was very approachable.
Food : 4/5. Typical hawker style food. We ordered the special fried rice, steamed pork bun, char kueh tiew and fried Hokuen noodle. Food was enjoyable. My favourite will be the char kueh tiew. Mouth watering and delightful.
Service : 4/5. Quick and efficient. The staff got us a pot of warm chinese tea as soon as we settled down. Plates because we were sharing, came shortly after.
Highly recommended : The char kueh tiew.

Will definitely come back to try the rest on the menu.

Chicken laksa - the best as they come with chicken and some seafood
Roast dish - I prefer the crispy pork, nice and tender with crispy skin
Fried noodle with egg sauce - it was not prefect but it satiesfied my craving (i wish the noodle was fried before)
Chef legenda fried noodle - ok (its curry based)
Fried kwetiau - really nice

My go to Flemington Laksa House.

Nestled in the shadow of the Famous Laksa King, Chef Legenda holds its own with delicious and simple Malaysian/Chinese flair. Cold winter nights are made better with a bowl of steaming hot laksa, it’s science and in my opinion Chef Legenda trumps its neighbor.

Plenty of gooey eggplant can be found with crispy tofu puffs and an assortment of seasonal veggies in the Vegetarian Laksa and at $9.50 for a serve your wallet will be happy and your belly full.

Go on order a plate of Roti and share it with your mates, you’d be silly not too!

What is Laksa King?
Thats right... gone are the days having to wait in a huge line and dine at a hectic place with tables so close to one another..
Chef Lagenda is the best laksa in Melbourne. A big bowl of tasty soup.. similar to next door BUT you can actually taste the LOVE that goes into making a bowl of laksa. Good service and reasonably priced. This is now my go to place when craving laksa.

It was New Years day 2018 and we thought of trying out somewhere in Flemington. Understandably the place was packed and had to cue up outside for 20 mins to get a table for 7.
The ambience was buzzing. Nice woody interior and bit loud. The staffs were friendly and attentive which is appreciated. So we ordered 7 dishes some were ok. Fried chicken was little dry and tasteless so chili sauce would have done nicely. Vegetarian spring roll was ok. Roti chicken roll had too much cucumber but less chicken. Fried rice little oily. We liked curry chicken but lacked a bit of punch. Overall texture it was just on par. Nothing too special. I will give them a benefit of doubt of a very busy day but some attention to food would go a long way.

😱Lizzie's first impression: Laksa King is always seen with the line but Chef Lagenda is also just as popular and only a few doors down.

🍩Lizzie enjoys: You can not go wrong with any of individual dishes like combination fried ipoh noodles or laksa or satay chicken skewers. The main dishes like the sweet and sour pork is always so crispy and delicious. The vegetarian tofu dish was also cooked really well.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: I have been here on numerous occassions but there is this one time they seated us right in front of the unisex toilet which was only a metre away from us...it just didn't feel comfortable at all.

🎖Lizzie rates overall: A great place for a quick eat and it always has consistent quality and affordable food.

Came here for a quick lunch on a Sunday. It was busy but we got a table relatively easily. Be sure to book though if you have a larger group. Chef Lagenda has quite an extensive menu with a wide variety of dishes to choose from. The food itself is on the saltier side. We actually asked for all our dishes to be less salty but it still turned out to be quite salty for our tastebuds. So if your not a fan of really salty dishes, be sure to ask for less salt. However, the portions were big and neither of us could finish our meal. Great place for a quick meal or some yummy takeaway. A big bonus with the complimentary Chinese tea!

We wanted a quick laksa at our old fave Laksa King but left when told of the 15 min waitfor a table. Chef Lagenda was the obvious alternative as its next door and also Malaysian cuisine. It is delicious! I ordered a seafood laksa and my boyfriend had the lemon chicken. We also ordered a serve of spring rolls and a beer each. Bill came to less than 50 bucks which is great value. My laksa was HUGE and much better value than the laksa's next door. Heaps of seafood and delicious coconuty broth. My partners meal was lovely also and the spring rolls were exceptional. The only downside was where we were seated- table 28- which was in the service area and bearing the brunt of the outside cold. Ask to be seated downstairs if you want to be at a comfortable temperature during your meal. Special mention to the mesmerising food lift that transported food from ground floor to first. Chef Lagenda is a great alternative to Laksa King and possibly....... even better (gasp)!

The serving size for the Laksa was huge and the roti was definitely tasty! It's a really hard choice for me to choose favourites between Chef Lagenda and Laksa King, they're both great and left satisfied each time. Lagenda meal deal ☑️ beef rendang ☑️ laksa ☑️ Singapore noodle ☑️ koay teow ☑️ mee goreng ☑️ I absolutely love the food here. Located directly across from Newmarket station it's easy to find. Food always comes out quickly and is never a let down. Tasty as.

Food took ages to come out and it wasn't even busy. But when it did, it was damn good. Had the crispy chilli duck, which had just the right amount of chilli and it was cooked perfectly. A generous serve for a little over $10. Lots of variety on menu, will return for sure.

DO: Everything like we did. We did: the laksa, the crab (pepper and chilli), the chicken spare ribs, pork spare ribs, greens and Roti.

DON'T: Forget to order the bubble teas with pearls to cut through all the oil.

TIP: Book ahead and grab a table at the rear. Plenty of space (even for kids) and away from the store entrance that opens and closes a lot due to the take away orders.

Been here since Laska King was closed. And it becomes my favorite laksa place. The laksa is so tasty. It was the best laksa I have ever had. And it was cheap as well.
The only negative point I would give is the manner of the staffs. I've been here quite a few times. Most of them were nice yet when I came in after lunch time, they seemed very tired because the restaurant was quiet and I was the only customer there. They looked tired even when they take order and serve the food. Lol they made my lunch pretty heavy and tired as well especially when I just finished my exam 30 mins ago.
But I'll keep coming back for my delicious laksa. Highly recommend.

Chef Lagenda, as I have been told, hones the original chef behind Laksa King's infamous laksa. While these two restaurants battle it out near Flemington train station, the laksa here is slightly BETTER than Laksa King's. It still has a very authentic Malaysian taste to it, however it is slightly more textured and richer than its competitor's equivalent. They are both good, and it should be noted that Chef Lagenda does not require an excessive waiting time to get into.

After hearing amazing things about chef lagenda I finally got the opportunity to find out for myself what the fuss was about.
I decided to order the satay chicken skewers and chicken curry laksa upon arrival and received a perfectly sized bowl and plate with my food within 10 minutes.
Now, whilst the laksa doesn't look too appealing, the flavour and quality made up for it and the skewers were very tasty.
All of this with a glass of mineral water only sent me back $22 and the staff were also very friendly upon arrival and leaving.
I will definitely be back again to try other options on the menu after a positive first impression, however, if there is one negative, and this one is a big one, it is cash only, and the closest ATM is a 5 minute walk away :(

Had Kung Po Chicken and Sambal Veggies. Both were authentic to the Malaysian/Singapore Style of stir fry. Can get very crowded and busy. Recommend a booking be made, especially on weekends.

The giant bowl of vegetarian laksa is what dreams are made of!! Lots of vego options. My boyfriend loves the fried duck and the nasi lemak! Quite cheap, and great service, everyone there is super friendly! Remember to bring cash and to book a table - they get busy!!!

Good, spacious place to dine in with great selection of food choices. Always seem crowded all the time even during weekday. We tried this restaurant many times before and most of the times, the experiences are quite good. We also tried their brand in Deer Park too. Their mee goreng is definitely different at 2 places but still ok. Service was pretty good too.

When Malaysian food is what you want than Chef Lagenda is where you wanna go! Visited over the weekend and was SO pleased by the food. We tried the traditional curry laksa & meal deal with Roasted Duck and BBQ Pork with chicken soup & egg noodles. Can't wait to return soon for more dishes!

Very authentic Malaysian food. Laksa is as good as laksa king next door. The three colour drink is not as good as from viet restaurants. Keen to come back and try other dishes.

Usually viewed as the alternative to Laksa King if the latter is full, Chef Lagenda holds its own ground in the flavour department with similar and unique menu items from the Malaysian kitchen. Some dishes tend to be a bit hit and miss though, like the samba seafood dish that looked the part but had zero saltiness to it.
