Went with a work mate, ordered pork and chinese cabbage dumpling, xiao long baos and pan fried pork dumplings/potstickers. All were delicious, xiao long baos had nice hot soup which was delicious, fillings was great, the skins were excellent on all the baos and dumplings. Potstickers had nice crunch on bottom and cooked so well. Would definitely recommend this place for dumplings
Came in a group of 10 and was seated in a private room. With such a large group we were able to try a variety of dishes which were all good and flavoursome. My favourite dishes were the wonton with peanut and chilli oil and Xiao long bao. Prices are quite reasonable.
The restaurant has a lot of authentic Shanghainese dishes. The flavour of the pork belly was amazing, just as good as what I had in shanghai, the fired eel was a bit too salty but. The fried buns was yummy and I think it tastes better than Xiaolongbao. Generally speaking, pretty happy with the restaurant.
Located just next to the food court at the top floor.
Love the decor and cosy interior and the staff is friendly and attentive.
There is so much to choose from the menu and I would usually have their xiao long bao, dumplings with peanut and chilli sauce and one that is not to be missed is the crispy beef. Goes perfectly well with rice
Love how they have options for ala carte, or dishes to share or if you're wanting just dumplings that can be an option too.
Xiao long bao are everywhere but not everywhere does them well. New Shanghai does. The staff are polite and helpful and the atmosphere is relaxed. The food comes quickly and is full of flavour. Main dishes I’ve had such as the rainbow beef and the pippies are excellent. Well worth a visit.

We came here to have some dumplings but they were about to close for the day for we ordered them for take away instead. It took around 12 mins for them to prepare 2 of our dishes. We felt like it was a bit long. However, the pork buns were really nice and really like it.
The one post in emporium you do not want to miss in Emporium! What we usually get at New Shanghai is their dumplings with chilli and peanut sauce, stir fried noodles, stir fried crispy beef and the list goes on. The dumplings with chilli and peanut sauce is really good as you get a mixture of savoury and slightly sweet flavours.
The crispy beef is really good and it goes really well with rice or noodles. The staff is lovely here and the decor is nice as well. They do get quite busy, be sure to book before you visit.
I did not expect much from this spot but the veg dumplings are actually really great. They're big and bursting with veg and the skins are really nice. Service was a bit slow but staff were extremely friendly and the space is surprisingly pleasant for a food court.
A great selection of traditional Chinese dumplings. THe xia long Bao are highly recommended
So, I’ve tried the Chadstone one and decided to try the Emporium version of my favourite buns!
The Emporium one is definitely more substantial with them being super flavourful and the dough being so much softer and yummier! The filling is also amazing and I saw ACTUAL crab meat in there so I have to say I’m impressed!
I also tried the vegetarian buns and they’re really good and a great option for vegetarians!
Can’t rate the service but the food is great!
Nice food nice serving to customers. My parents tried to find some good Chinese food and tea in cbd, this place would be great to have dinner with Family.
This is my 3rd time here and i am always craving their dumplings, full of flavours and good portion. Braised pork are tender, juicy, spot on flavours and has an appealing presentation. Nice ambiance, it is like you step into Asia. Good vibes, fast service. Highly recommended.
We loved 😍
We really loved the dan dan noodles and the chilli dumplings in peanut oil.
We disliked 😖
The xiao long baos were average, nothing special.
Went there on the dragon boat festival and expected, was very crowded.
We reserved table for 10 amd was given the long table im the inner part of the restaurant. The food came in relatively fast, remembering how crowded and how much food we ordered.
We ordered 10 menus and everything was exceptionally good. The portion was big enough to share by 4-5 people and price-wise, nothing out of expectation.
Though we understand that the restaurant was packed, I think they can use couple extra help for their service. We asked for them to cut our rice cake 3-4 times which took 15mins or so, and the waiter had to literally run around to serve us and other tables. But despite all, solid 4/5.
Super ❤️ their stir fry spinach with minced garlic - very tasty with the perfect level of crisp! Boiled prawn dumplings were also yummy, however the salt and pepper calamari could use more pepper. All in all, we had a very pleasant lunch. Will be back for more.
Been here so many times. One of my favourite dumpling place in the city. The service is pretty quick, either to get a table nor the food. If you love truffle you have to try their truffle xialongbao and truffle dumplings. They are so good. The lion’s head soup is super delicious too. Another dumpling that you have to give ago is the one with peanut and chilli sauce. Great for sharing. Highly recommended
I’ve loved New Shanghai for many years. It’s still one of the best value and good tasting dumpling restaurants around. I’ve rarely had something I didn’t like on the menu.
The staff are friendly and polite. Especially the guy with the tattoos.
Great dumplings in a nice secluded food court setting. The Xiao Long Bao, potstickers and fried pork buns are all versions of pork soup dumplings. The fried dumplings were crisp without being oily which was nice.
In the corner of emporium, authentic shanghai food, many varieties and really yum. atmosphere is good and staff is nice. Will come back for sure.
Resident Photographer and Conflicted Pescatarian were off to Europe for six months to recreate the summer pictured in Call Me By Your Name, and so it was paramount that our last meal together in a while be a meal of the Asian variety – everyone knows the worst thing about Europe other than the worrying rise of the far-right is the lack of quality Asian food. We’d already been to our favourite Delhi Streets a few weeks ago, and this time, Resident Photographer suggested we go to New Shanghai – somewhere I hadn’t visited in a while, in part because its Emporium location reminds me too much of overpriced work lunches. What I didn’t realise was that New Shanghai is an international chain, which funnily enough began in Sydney, but has now expanded across to Shanghai and Dubai.
The dumplings were great. It's quite funny how they warned you to poke a hole in the xiao long bao before eating it so you don't burn yourself. However that advice did help me enjoy it, usually I don't like it because it usually burns my mouth. The crispy American pork ribs were alright, but it was overshadowed by the dumplings we ordered.
New Shanghai is nestled upstairs in the food area of Emporium. Pleased to see that the wontons/dumplings are made freshly on site (glass room at the front). Service was fast and attentive, don’t expect much interaction from the waiters though.
We ordered 2 dumpling dishes between 2 people which was certainly enough.
The prawn wontons were a stand out, the simplicity of peanut + sesame sauce + chilli oil was delicious. Immediately tried to think of how I could recreate the sauce at home so I can eat it over and over again.
XLB didn’t come out too hot and didn’t burn the roof of your mouth like it usually does which I really liked.
Definitely will come back.
An upscale place for dumplings that is good value for money. :) It was a nice atmosphere. Food wise, the xiao long pao is perfect. Good skin texture and the balance amount of meat and fat they use in the filling. New Shanghai is definitely the best place in Melbourne to satisfy those cravings! Will be back for that definitely.
Went with a couple of friends, and found that the ambience was comfortable for a group and the service was nice and fast!
The waiter paid attention to what we asked and our requirements for each meal, which was amazing, and the food turned our pretty great!
Would recommend the chicken&sweet corn soup!
Came here for dad's birthday and we didn't realise the Inside was so spacious since it's located in the upstairs food court of emporium :o the food was delicious and service was great c: portions were reasonable too!
An upscale place for dumplings that is good value for money. The other dishes are also delicious! However it can get pretty busy and staff aren’t the friendliest, so come early and avoid the peak meal times.
We have been here a number of times. Food has been delicious, especially the Xiaolongbao or juicy pork dumplings. Service is good comparing to other Chinese restaurant. Clean and tidy. Nice look and feel.
I would rate 3.5.
We were there early so the service was good and attentive. However once the place got busy the staffs were flustered and it was almost impossible to get the staff attention. We were even serve with a chipped plate. They might be understaff on that day.
Food wise, the xiao long pao is perfect. Good skin texture and balance amount of meat and fat they use in the filling. Will be back for that definitely.
Stir fry Shanghai noodle : we love it. Great flavour and spring noodle texture. Will be back for that too.
Fish dumpling: i would say so-so. The filling is very much like fish ball and is it tasteless. The chilli dip serve on the table compliment this well.
Shepherd parcel: it’s a wonton with thicker skin serve in a soup. Great flavour wonton and soup.
lovely chinese restaurant located in the emporium, central to the CBD. their serving sizes/portions are quite small even though their prices are significantly higher than those found in the nearby restaurants located in chinatown. surprisingly, their kumquat and lemon juice drink is the ultimate stand out for me personally - i would come back just to have it as takeaway! the drink is so refreshing and quenches your thirst instantly. as long as you don't mind sour drinks then i would definitely recommend it! otherwise the yakult smoothie is also quite delicious and different.
other than that, many of their dishes are well done but not worth it due to the price. we tried the shanghai fried noodles, xiao long bao and some other classics - all of which can be found for half the price in chinatown or in glen waverley for the same quality, if not better.
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to study in Shanghai a few years ago and for anyone that has been to China, you'll understand the cravings for xiao long bao, wontons and dumplings that hit you when you leave. New Shanghai is definitely the best place in Melbourne to satisfy those cravings!

One of my go to places that I know will never disappoint me! If you're looking for a place for amazing juicy 'xiao long baos', then look no further! I honestly love their dumpling variety! Flavours are amazing, prices are decent as well. Their xiao long baos are much tastier and bigger in size compared to Ding Tai Fung.
Cute place for a chinese fix (3.8⭐)
Ambience: The place is actually pretty cute, with an ancient chinese vibe and pretty spacious. Its a bit dim but still quite bright.
Service: So i waited outside quite a while because there were no one at the counter to sit us, which were kinda annoying. Aside from that, some staffs were friendly but some were just ok, they do their jobs though. As soon as we were seated we were served water. The food came reasonably quick. Though getting their attention sometimes can be hard since they are all busy.
Food: Had their xiao long bao (crab n pork) and i was pretty surprised that the skin was soft and thin with a considerable amount of soup in it. Actually the best xiao long bao skin i've had (im not xlb expert) as it melts in ur mouth really BUT the only thing i didnt enjoy was the fishiness from the crab as its too dominating unlike the one at "the famous franchise"where the crab and pork work in great harmony.
I'll definitely recommend their pork only. (I think it'll be way better)
Also had their stir fried rice cake with pork in XO sauce, didnt expect much but it turned out to be really yum. It was not oily, the rice cake were soft and chewy, the sauce was not overwhelming and just right and the pork were pretty generous, though the vegs can b bit more generous. My favorite stir fried rice cake in melb so far.
Price: It is a bit pricier than others but still reasonable for what we had.
YUM: xiao long bao (stick to the pork!) And stir fried rice cake with pork
NAH: maybe the crab and pork xlb
photos: prok and crab xiao long bao and stir fried rice cake with pork
( follow for more!✨)

Had the crab/pork steamed dumplings and the pan fried pork dumplings. Great place to stop for lunch when you’re craving a dumpling fix at the Emporium. Service was good and didn’t wait long for our order to get served.
A good place to get a dumpling fix. Nice space, consistent dumplings, good quality and reasonable service. Not the sort of place that wows, but good enough. Because it’s a shopping centre based restaurant though, dinner services close early. Be prepared.
Love this place their xiao long bao, vegie dumplings, salted egg yolk tofu and calamari, fried rice and spring onion pancake. They were all delicious and we enjoyed the comfortable setting
Authentic surrounding design. Would rate customer service 3.5/5. Food is 4/5.
Pic 1: Hot & sour soup w/ prawn, shredded pork & tofu (it's nice but the vinegar taste is abit too strong)
Pic 2: Xo sauce fried rice (tasty, recommended)
Pic 3: shanghai stir fried noodles w/ pork & vegetables (very tasty, definitely should try)
Pic 4: Steamed pork xiao long bao (not bad but the soup inside is abit too little)
Pic 5: Shepherd's purse & pork wontons, chilli oil, peanut & sesame sauce (smells & taste good, must try)
Overall, the Shanghai stir fried noodle & Sherperd wonton are a must to try. Really tasty!
Could’ve been on the Bund, this little piece of Shanghai is quite charming.
Red timber shutters adorn the walls, creating a busy yet authentic feel. Wait staff are spot on.
We order some xiao long bao, which are pleasant but not earth shattering. The chilli accompaniment lets it down. Also some pork and cabbage dumplings (really nice), and some pot stickers (delish, but messy). The spring rolls are light, flaky, squishy on the inside, and accompanied by the loveliest sweet plum sauce.
The salt n pepper squid is lovely - hot, ultra tender, smothered in fried onion, garlic, chilli and fresh shallots.
But the showstopper is the kung pao chicken - anything but normal, replete with Szechuan peppercorns. This takes the cake.
Service is slick, prices are very reasonable, and the jasmine tea (lovely teapot) is just what the doctor ordered.
Good job.
Delicious dumplings, loved the wontons with peanut sauce, yummy custard buns, they also had a gin cocktail which was great! it was a wait to get the food though..
Great food and great value. The shepherds purse wontons with chili oil and peanut butter are out of this world. The crispy chicken has the best dipping sauce. Chinese broccoli is cooked perfectly and is a generous serve.
Great place for a group so you can order a variety of dishes and taste a bit of everything.
Went here with a couple of friends. It's actually ideal for sharing as you can order a few different dishes and share. I personally loved the dumplings here so fresh with great filling and well made.
Little Bit Of Everything
+3.5
This is located in the food court on the top most floor of Emporium. Pretty spacious place to dine at but gets super busy during lunch hours. The service is quick regardless how busy it is and the staff are really nice.
My favorite are their Pork and Coriander dumplings and Prawn Wontons with chilli oil and peanut sauce.
Great place to hang out in big groups or even by yourself.
We showed up on a busy Thursday night and were seated within minutes of queueing. Service was very quick and staff were very friendly. Food was exceptional!

+3.5
😱Lizzie’s first impression: This place is placed in the bustling food court up in the Emporium. The service is quick and the staff are nice.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: The massive standout is the prawn wontons with chilli oil and peanut sauce!! It is to die for. It costs a little more than the usual dumplings but it is worth it! The Pot stickers are always very consistent and the pork filling has a good flavour.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: Unfortunately, despite the Shanghai fried noodles being very tasty, it is somewhat too oily and doesn’t have much meat to noodle proportion. (Almost no meat) the Xiao long bao wraps are a little thicker than usual.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place for some dumplings and a quick bite - big space for group feastings too!

After the movie we went for a walk and we stop at emporium in CBD and we decided to eat at New Shanghai very good customer service and excellent food recommended to all sorry no photos was to hungry hahaha.
UPDATE
Still good ... more variety than just dumplings. JT13/04/2018.
PREVIOUS
They have somewhat restored my faith in franchise food ...
Not a fan of franchise restaurants, however I "still" ventured to their "trendier" Chadstone restaurant and was disappointed, however I'm happy to report that this one is way better, not just their "old" Shanghai interior but their food.
Their dumplings are divine; Pot Stickers "pan-fried Pork", Xiao Long Bao, Prawn Wontons with Chilli Oil, Peanut and Sesame Oil - must re-order items ... they aren't those cheap dumplings but excellent for $20 (10 pcs).
Interesting desserts collaboration with Luxbite.
The only concern was their Greens, they were disappointing, tasteless, however we shall come back for more dumplings at this franchised restaurant :-) JT-09/02/2018.
Every time I go to chadstone, there’s always a line. Since the emporium location opened earlier, there was less of a queue. New Shanghai emporium has become me and J’s favourite spot for weekly Friday night dinners. It’s reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. The quality and taste is very consistent. Service is quick – reconfirms your order all the time. Decor suits the Chinese theme with wooden tables and chairs. Caters for large families with infants and children.
Love coming here once in a while! I always enjoy every bite and feel a sense of satisfaction when walking out!
The xiao long bao and the pot stickers are a must for me! They are so tasty and authentic to me (coming from a Chinese gurl here), however the shanghai noodles (the plate of noodles + brown sauce added to give it that brown colour) didn't really appeal to me, don't think I've been a fan of shanghai noodles, or maybe they just didn't do it well enough. But I definitely want to try more of their range!
A great place when you have dumplings cravings! We discovered this place when we were doing shopping in Emporium, their Xiao Long Bao with pork is really good, the wrapping is thin and the soup is still hot and the filling is really flavourful too! Also loved their spicy prawn dumplings, really nice as well.
Serving up New Shanghai’s signature Chinese cuisine inspired by traditional delicacies found on the streets of Shanghai, the chain has earned great critical acclaim across Australia. . The Melbourne restaurant has a relaxed ambience which exudes an atmosphere of authenticity, transporting diners straight to a 1930s Shanghai street.
Feeling like dumplings in the city? New Shanghai in Emporium is convenient and not too pricey. We had the xiao long bao (steamed pork dumplings) with pork belly steamed buns. The dumplings were tasty - however, we would've wanted more 'juice' inside and the buns themselves were fluffy and pork belly was tender and soft! A good place for a quick eat with an extensive menu filled with cold-dishes, dim sum, soups, noodles and drinks.
Updated review
We ordered the chilli prawn wontons, pork and chive steamed dumplings, spring onion pancake and Zhia Jiang Noodles - noodles with spicy ground pork.
For a food court meal I was thoroughly impressed 😋😋.

Shopping up a storm at the Emporium and had a craving for dumplings. We shared the pot stickers which is pan fried dumplings $12.90 for 8 pieces. Not china town prices or quality but still ok. Lots of seating and great location in the food court.
