Review Harry & Frankie - Melbourne

Anna Swedee
Fantastic selection of wines, delicious food and incredibly knowledgeable and service minded staff. It's a little gem that I happily recommend

Cosy little wine bar serving great food and a huge selection of reasonably priced and high quality wines
Jackson Harnwell
Fantastic selection of wines at reasonable prices. Staff are knowledgeable and a simple request like "can you put together a cheese board with a couple of hard cheeses and a couple of soft, with some cold cuts" gets you a beautiful hand-selected platter. Highly recommend.

Perfect local gem. Have been here a few times now and it's consistently excellent. Love love love it. Excellent selection of wine, great service. Simple menu fabulous food and cheese. Perfect for a casual dinner or catch up with friends over drinks.

Cork taint. Not interested in a remedy. Tried to refer us to their landlord rather than taking responsibility. Or even responding. 🙄 Can’t believe we were such regulars. Not again. Pathetic.

This is a really nice wine bar BUT ... the food is a rip off. It's over priced and small portions. Ever heard of Cuisine Mingy? I ordered prawns at $22. What did I get? 3 prawns ... that's all. How much would a single prawn cost at wholesale for a restaurant? Say $1 or maybe $2 each. Three prawns is $6, and then to charge $22 for 3 is a crime. They charge $14 for a small piece of cheese with some crackers. Sadly ... THE very best example of Cuisine Mingy I have ever seen! Go for the excellent wine and ambiance but DON'T eat there, it's a rip off.

Good wine, great pinot glasses, terrible customer service. One waitress was clearly drunk & we saw her drinking more. Other guys just ignored us. Place was half empty so this rude behaviour cant be explained by them being busy. Never again.
Sam Jackson
Great wine bar, in the often ignored and quiet top end of bay st. Amazing selection of wines with friendly staff (table service). Try the house wine on tap. Always excellent.

I’ve been going for a couple of years as I liked it but when we caught an overcharge on the bill last night the waiter was so rude. I’m always nice and courteous to staff and I’m shocked that he took such an attitude when caught.
Mistermister
Excellent venue. Extensive and exclusive wine list. Tapas and mains available. Arancini balls were delicious and the Bresaola was nice but too much to finish. The calamari was under seasoned. $20 corkage per bottle. Attentive service.

Harry & Frankie is hands down my favourite spot in Port Melbourne, outside of my house! It has everything you could ask for in a wine bar - knowledgeable staff, extensive wine lists, gorgeous ambience and impressive food list. If I ever moved out of the suburb, I would make regular pilgrimages back to H&F. And for those lovers, it's a perfect date spot!
Good Food, Good Mood
I don't go to Port Melbourne often but it's establishments like Harry and Frankie that would make you want to go back. Great service from start to finish and had some delicious wine tasting before our meal.

Menu is more tapas style, we ordered 3 meats and 6 cheeses, with croquettes, prawns, and broccolini between four. The semi hard French cheese and blue cheese were my favourite. We also had a bottle of the Tasmanian Pinot from the wine tasting, super smooth and complimented the charcuterie boards. There needs to be more wine bars like this that show TLC to their product and their customers. Make sure you book a table as it was full house on a cold Thursday night, even outdoors! :)

This little place is an absolute gem. Its cosy, the food is great, the wine selection is vast and the staff are so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I'd been meaning to go for a while based on a reccommendation from a work colleague and it did not disappoint. We shared a couple of entree nibbles, the lamb rack special, petit four desserts and some cheese to finish. The food was delicious, I especially enjoyed the fortifieds which Aaron chose to go with our Cashel Blue irish cheese. We stayed until after closing, but the guys didn't seem to mind! Highly recommend!

What a great venue. Aaron always gives both friendly and professional service, the food is great, and the drink even better. Never been to a place where every staff member has such intimate knowledge of all of their products. Always blown away by the fantastic service, food and bev, and experience in general. 5 stars.

Really disappointing experience at a bar I normally rate as my number one pick in melbourne. I was
Charged for an extra glass of
Wine I did not have, I picked up on this after I got home and was going through my handbag. The pate we ordered was delicious but came with a measly serving of bread. I was charged $2 for the extra slice of bread even though pate jar was still half full. Work out your serving size and your pricing. Disappointed

Had charcuterie and sparkling here last night with friends .

If your looking for a mellow vault / cellar, laid back talkative style cheese and wine bar, then this is a must to visit .

A very large selection of wines line the walls to browse and buy , the staff & owners are very welcoming and helpful, you don't need to know about wines , cheeses or what goes with what , they will help , guide and educate in your journey.

Or if you prefer a beer then they can cater for you as well.

The pork sliders are just amazing , fresh hot tasty and bite sized for that entree starter, the charcuterie was a selection of two salamis , hot and mild, couple of cheeses, loads of dipping bread , fresh and toasted , three varieties of olives, chicken pate served separate to meet my allergy requirements , all that on a rustic bread board.

It was ample for three people and perfectly match to the rose' and prosecco Bubbles.

My recommendation is to be there by about 630 when the mood starts to be mellow and take up a stool around the large island bar.

Great place !!

Fantastic! I had a wonderful time relaxing with a glass of the house rose, we asked the head chef Sam to chose a few dishes for us, he made some perfect choices - the croquettes, kingfish, bao buns, finished off with an amazing desert! Loved the interior and the wide selection of wines. Service was top notch. Keep up the good work guys!

Harry and Frankie is a small little wine bar tucked away at the end of bay street. Great place to go for a sneaky wine and some delicious salami and cheese! We went on a Saturday and there was a great vibe. Awesome date venue. The staff were really good, attentive and not at all annoying!

This is my local. So forgive me if I am slightly biased.
I stumbled across this place by accident one evening when I saw "wine shop" sign and popped in to pick up a bottle of organic Italian red.
I have been popping in ever since - birthdays, farewells, to do some work on my laptop, catch up with friends, to snuggle up to my man or just a quiet glass of wine before collecting my son from daycare and putting on "Mother" wig (those of you who are parents will understand).
The wine by the glass never disappoints. Try a glass of Silkman Reserve Chardonnay. Or Foster e Rocco Sangiovese.
Service is spot on when owners are present.
Can be lacking when they are not (a note to staff: when there is not enough wine in a bottle to fill a glass, just open a new bottle. Don't mix and match).
The menu: this is not a restaurant. It is a "nibble and tipple" place. So don't expect an extensive menu. What they do though, they do well.
I would add a few vego friendly options. Or may be Port Melbourne is carnivorous enough not to care.
Doesn't really matter.
An insider tip: pick any bottle on the shelf of a bottle shop for a small corkage. And do give those magnificent euro wines a try. They are worth every cent.
Enjoy!!!!
(And don't drive yourself home)
Best wine bar in the bayside!!! We are locals and love it!!! Yummy food and specials always changing and the desert!!! Yum!!!! Tom is a great host and knows his wines, even if I am difficult :)

Great find on Bay Street Port Melbourne , large selection of local and international wines. Drop in for a glass , a bottle or stick around for dinner. Long communal style table and impressive decor.

Awesome service. Niche private little bar great for a good wine and catch up. Can spend a fortune or keep it cheap depending on the wine mood you're in. Haven't had a meal here yet but on the several times I've been the nibbles have been lovely, although not on the generous side. Great furnishings, classy, yet no arrogance about it. Overall they've done well here. Has become rather a popular spot for groups to catch up.

A bit disappointed...... Had great service and atmosphere, BUT, we asked the waiter to put together a tasting plate to go with the wine for two people. We were charged $90 for just the tasting plate, completely overpriced and wasn't a great way to end the night when we were presented with the bill. Unfortunately would have to think seriously before returning, or make sure they quote you for the testing plate.. We felt ridiculously taken advantage of, especially since last time we ordered a similar plate with wine and were not charged nearly the same amount the last time we visited only a few months ago.

One Of The Better Melbourne Wine Bars. Popped in for a few drinks a couple of weeks ago, the staff were friendly and knowledgeable about their wines. Happy to chat and passionate about the wider world of wine. A decent and fairy interesting list by the glass, definitely one of the better wine bar options out there and the pork scratchings were delicious too!

Delicious. And a great evening was had by all.. A group of 6 of us went for my 55th Birthday. The 3 couples are in their 50's so H & F's is basically Nirvana for us. For my wife and I it was our first time but the other 4 are semi regulars.

What more could you ask for!!!!! Great staff, terrific wine, simple and delicious fare, plus the sort of decor and ambiance that supports the entire experience to perfection.

One of the best Birthday evenings I have had. We shall return.

Regards 'The Birthday Boy'.

Knowledgable and friendly staff, fantastic selection of wine, great food.. These people get wine. They go out of their way to support independent producers, and people doing interesting things with wine - and the staff know the perfect bottle for any occasion. You can drink it there for a corkage fee, or take it away with you. If you're staying, the food's brilliant. They offer one or two mains (changing every night) and a selection of high quality nibbles. Harry & Frankie is a great addition to Bay Street.

This place has got it spot on. We came for a midweek drink and ended up staying for hours! Friendly and knowledgeable staff, excellent wines for every budget and the food was delicious. Great atmosphere too. We will be back!

Fantastic. Food is brilliant. Had the great meal and wines are brilliant.

Appalling service. We were unfortunate to have chosen Harry & Frankie for a drink and got treated appallingly.
Our group of girls were sitting at the bar when a waiter walked past and the water jug he was carrying broke in his hand causing a couple of litres of water to drop from a height splashing us and drenching our area. It was not his fault, they cleaned it up and acknowledged that we had been quite effected by the incident. We had water up our skirts, in our shoes, thru our bags but didn’t complain about the damage and discomfort. We were surprised at the end of the night, that they did not extend any courtesy to us by way of amendment to our bill as a sign of good will/apology, in fact they charged us for drinks we didn’t even order. After they fixed up the error I did not ask for a discount, just mentioned my disappointment considering my satin shoes that used to be soft are now stiff and water marked, my white fabric bag is no longer white because the water that flooded it picked up dirt from the floor. My friend had to sit in a damp skirt, wet legs and squelch around in water logged open toed leather heels, add to this the air con and she was freezing. We were very uncomfortable but didn’t want to ruin the night by going home early to change. When the waitress passed on my comment to the manager, he stormed over as if he was going to start a punch up with us, he was extremely aggressive, sarcastic and clearly not coping emotionally with the situation. He scowled at us saying we were dreaming if we thought we were going to get anything compliments of the house, he argued that the water wasn’t cold (despite coming out of the cold tap and being in a metal jug), he argued that it was only water and to get over it. He was rude and unsympathetic, he basically told us to go get stuffed then huffed off in the middle of our conversation, his behaviour was as if he was having a tiff with his girlfriend, by no means is he management material. If there was nothing they could do apart from apologise, that would of been fine but his attitude was a disgrace to the venue, a bad example to his staff and a shame to his mother for being so ill mannered. He either needs to find another career that doesn’t involve interaction with other people or undergo some serious customer service training. Plenty of other places to visit in Melbourne that have consideration for their guests.

Love this place but can be VERY expensive. $80 for a cheese and meat platter for two people was a bit of a shock. Glad to have it nearby but won't be making it a regular stop, unfortunately. Staff were fantastic though!

We went for a drink and stayed all evening.. Harry and Frankie’s is an excellent wine bar either for couples or for groups.

I came here once previously with a group just for a couple of hours on a Friday evening.

But when I went there on Friday, 24 October 2014 I went there with the intention only of having some drinks with my wife and then probably going somewhere else for dinner.

We had not made any booking but the service was immediately friendly and welcoming. Being a Friday I needed a glass of red but also wanted to wait near the front door for when my wife arrived. "No problem" the staff replied let us know when you need a table. I propped myself near a comfortable bench near the front door with a glass of wine for myself and my wife for as soon as she arrived.

After a short while with no prompting at all one of the wait staff came up to us and offered to show us to two seats at a comfortable individual bench.

During the whole evening the staff were relaxed but attentive. Whenever we needed another glass of wine it was cheerfully provided in a relaxed attentive fashion and our glasses of water were constantly topped up without even the need to ask.

And seriously, a place that has a red house wine as good as the one they have on tap (literally) clearly have good wine taste. I believe it is a central Victorian wine (not sure but I reckon from around Heathcote way).

We were so relaxed and settled in that we hadn't moved or considered where to go for dinner but was time to eat and the attentive wait staff enquired as to whether we were hungry, which of course we were. We chose from the menu and had a couple of simple but nicely prepared dishes to share both of which were very tasty. We ended up leaving when they were closing having had a very enjoyable evening. Clearly they had everything we wanted as we didn't end up going anywhere else.

I would go back without hesitation and would thoroughly recommend Harry and Frankie's as a wonderful wine bar where you feel comfortably part of the place almost as if you are sitting in a cross between a wonderful wine cellar surrounded by bottles of extraordinary wine and a private relaxed club of wine appreciation. I am almost reluctant to say this as I'm sure lots more people will go and enjoy themselves but it I would I really like to keep this as my own secret place to escape with good company, good wine, good food and attentive staff.
Super Taster
Awesome staff and vibes. I'll add a hydraulic closer to your toilet door area if you're interested as it's a pain in my toilet.

Harry and Frankie is the only place I now go in this area. The staff are super friendly and very knowledgable about all their wine, beer and produce. And with the amazing selection of wine, that's ever changing, and the best quality charcuterie and cheese this side of the river, Harry and Frankie will become your new favourite too

Great food and wine at new fave Port Melbourne destination. Love everything about this place. Service super, wine wonderful and food fabulous. We love the toasted sandwiches and all the food served here and can't believe others have been critical (although almost identical lengthy comments always look a little suspicious).
Everything is reasonably priced, especially the house glasses.
Definitely worth a visit on all counts and judging by the popularity of the place, it's no longer a secret!

Love this place! Great atmosphere, fantastic fit-out - big enough to feel comfortable, small enough to retain that cosy "small bar" feel. The wine list is amazing and the staff are really knowledgeable. The menu is well suited to complement the choice of wines. Looks like I've found my new go-to place whenever I am anywhere near Port Melbourne!

Feels like you're in Europe. Fantastic atmosphere, attentive staff and amazing selection of wine. Great place to catch up for a drink with friends after work. Tapis was yummy but would love to see a serving of meatballs, arancici or croquettes on the menu, the toasties really don't work.
Janine.pike.mec
Food terrible. Great fit out, wines amazing , service efficient, but omg the food . Seriously toasties on the menu, have you heard of sliders or some tapas. I could have a toastie at home and the terrine we had was the worst I have ever tasted. I think it was the left over chicken filling with a bit of corn added then put in a mould...really. The pate was even worse no flavour what so ever.
John.addison.l
Wine great but food so disappointing. We had great wines but the food was terrible, they had toasties on the menu are you kidding, what about some funky sliders or tapas type food. The terrine was the worst I have ever tasted and the pate had absolutely no flavour at all. I think the terrine was the left over fillings form the chicken toastie put in a mould and served up with a bit of corn added. Great fit out and service great, but the food is so disappointing and limiting. Sorry guys.

Just what Port Melbourne needed!. Harry and Frankie's is just what Port Melbourne needed! So much great wine to chose from, the tap wine is most definitely worth a glass or two. Food is delicious, fresh, and amazingly high in quality - worth the price. Service is quick and attentive, always willing to give a suitable suggestion if you can't chose from one of the many wines on offer within your price range. Definitely worth the evening out! I'll be back!

My new favourite place. What a great wine bar. Fantastic venue, personable staff, and so many amazing wines to choose from. Great value for money as well. Could go back many times and get different food and wine every time and I am sure it will always be high quality. What a wine bar should be.

Port Melbourne's new institution. Had a fantastic night with good wine and a great selection of high quality charcuterie (especially the delicious prosciutto and salami, not to mention house made pate). Great place to drink good wine with the flat corkage price of $15 on retail prices making this one of the cheapest places to enjoy a carefully curated selection of wine.
Di S
The shock was the prices. It was $15 for corkage & the platter for 3 small triangles of cheeses & some salami pieces was $75!!! Eat before you arrive is my tip. Won't be going back in a hurry.
DnA
Loved it. But.. Had a very enjoyable evening. Great venue, will be back. But, found the mixed platter a bit pricey at around $75. Would of been nice to get an indication of the price. The house tap wine is worth a try.
K
Guys, love the concept and the venue but $57 for 3 pieces of cheese and 2 types of salami is way too over priced for the anyone who want repeat customer business. You need to also improve customer service we waited nearly 1 hour for glasses of water even though we asked 3 different staff members. I would love to come back again but I will go else where if I want to eat
Eanastasiou
About time!. Great new winebar with excellent service and atmosphere. Great wine list with very uncomplicated, simple (but delicous) menu. We have been waiting a long time for something like this in Port Melbourne. We'll definately be back!

I Heard It Through The Grapevine. I’m not typically the type to pass my time in wine bars, but I’d be willing to make an exception for Harry and Frankie’s. This this new addition to Port Melbourne’s Bay St really is simply stunning. I couldn’t stop eyeing off the imposing collection of wines bottles and was mesmerised by the remarkable arched ceiling and its intricate designs overhead.

What I particularly like is that Harry and Frankie’s combines wine bar with retail store, so after enjoying a few glasses, you can select a bottle or two of your favourites to take home with you.

There’s a selection of wines by the glass, although your best bet is to select any bottle off the shelf and pay the flat $15 corkage charge to drink it onsite.

On the food front, the menu consists of cheeses and charcuterie along with a couple of larger style plates that change up regularly.

With friendly, knowledgeable staff passionate about wine and such a superb setting, this will no doubt prove to be one very popular spot.

Welcomed addition to Port Melbourne. This place is really fun and just what Port Melbourne needed.

We popped in last night ordered olives, pate and some wines. Staff are efficient but warm. Wines are available by the glass or you can select something from the extensive cabinets. Its a great concept that you can enjoy premium wines for a fraction of the price you would pay in a restaurant. They charge a corkage fee of $15.

There is also huge high table at the back modulas which works well for larger groups.

Would like to go back and graze through the other food options. They are reasonably priced all around the $10 mark.
Vincent
Fabulous fit out, very welcoming friendly staff with excellent wine knowledge
Will be back to eat, place was full when we went
FoodieAboutTown
There is a fantastic selection of nibbles to match with any wine, we enjoyed a locally produced salami and a bit of cheese but there is plenty on the menu to keep you going all night and don’t miss the Pinot Grigio on tap – made by the boys and a damn good drop for a very reasonable price.
