I have been here a handful of times now and if you have not been here, you are sleeping one of the best Japanese food in Melbourne. Only a small restaurant, but the setting does remind you of dining in Japan.

The dishes I have had here is some of the best I've had anywhere, and there hasn't been something on the menu which has dissapointed.

I most recommend the special which consists of croquettes, crumbed eel, kurobata hamburg with cheese and a couple others, served with rice, side dishes and miso soup (during lunch hours only). Just absolutely stunning despite the $28 price tag.

The hot stone cooked kurubuta belly and eggplant with Japanese BBQ sauce on the Rice and kimchi is also just out of this world. The black pork which they pride themselves in was so soft and fatty, it was flavour bomb. The eggplant was so delicious it also tasted like pork. Together with the crispy rice and kimchi, this is my go to for lunch.

Special Shoutout to the crispy kurobata belly which was simple, delicious and crispy on outside soft in inside. However the meat to veggie ratio was slightly off.

The deep fried crumbed kurobata loin ton katsu was slightly dry, but done well for this lean cut of mean.

Please visit this place if you haven't. Its slightly higher price tag is more than justifiable for its quality!!!

One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Melbourne!! Food is 👌👌👌.

The restaurant is decorated with lots of different pig ornaments. There aren't a lot of seats so table booking is highly recommended. Great for dates or small groups.

☆彡 Went for Thursday night dinner, it was busy but we only had 2min wait for 2 people :)
Ordered: potato croquette, scotch eggs, soy milk based hot pot, Korobuta belly
☆ The good:
- food quality individually is really good: soy milk hot pot is tastes unique with soft milky flavour that goes really well; scotch eggs are quite filling
- very efficient, clean and nice service
- small interior with seating encircling kitchen so you can watch as food is made, also lots of cute deco
- kurobuta belly is so soft with melt-in-your-mouth texture!! true to its rep
☆not so good:
- pricy for size

☆彡 Overall, really pleasant experience for slightly finer quality jap food :) would return for special occasions

Friendly staff, Japanese vibe, cute shop fitout. Still impressed how small their kitchen is and yet producing quality food. It was a hidden restaurant and all staff was Japanese.

We had some good times at Gipsy and Pigs. The food was slightly overpriced but the quality sort of justify. Love the stuffed chicken wings and omelette rice. The sashimi was super fresh. I hope they had more cocktail options. The Katsu was supposed to be the hero but I found them a lack of flavour and bland. Look forward to seeing more new dishes.

One of my favourite Japanese restaurant in Melbourne, I haven’t had a bad dish here. We started of with mixed sashimi, everything tastes fresh even the wasabi was grated. Then for the mains we ordered katsu curry and eye fillet katsu. I’ve tasted a lot of japanese curry but this is so far the only one that tastes “different” and you can taste that itms made from scratch as you can see small chunks of tomatoes. All the sauces they provide on the table, even the salad dressing, is so delicious

Kurobuta (black pig) specialist.

If you wonder what Kurobuta is, its black angus for pork!

Must - must order:
Ton-Katsu
Hire-Katsu
Kurobuto Hamburg Steak
Omelette Fried Rice (Omuraisu)

And don’t forget to get the miso soup!

The restaurant is small but cozy. Really friendly staff. Foods are amazing. Really good place to hag out with a small group of friend.

Oh when I went, they also have the mix platter with a mix of Ton-Katsu, Hire0Katsu and Kurobuto Hamburg Steak. Try to ask the staffs for this if they still have it.

Solid 4 stars, been twice and they have managed to squish 7ppl onto a 4 person table in this already tiny location. Service is great & the lunch special is too! As the GoodFood review states the restaurant is: "a tonkatsu (fried pork) restaurant celebrating the prized, pale pork known as kurobuta". They have a nice drinks menu too and it would be easy to dine solo here. As far as I'm concerned it all tastes great and I am not a Japanese cuisine or even Japanese-fusion expert so go try yourself.

Went for a quick lunch with my friend. Tiny, clean and comfy place hidden in Lonsdale street.

If you’re a fan of Sashimi, consider their lunch set. If not, I would recommend to try something else - preferred the homemade style of udon soup better. The pork was the best in both dishes.

Recommend the strawberry wine if you need some refreshments with less alcohol.

Will come back to try their dinner.

The restaurant is small so to have a seat in this place you must book beforehand as there are many people that tried to get a seat on the spot but ended up being declined.

Great ambience with plenty of pig sculptures and other pig related items in the restaurant. The place is a bit cramped but its their food they’re famous for.

Ordered Sashimi, Egg Omelette Rice and their Grilled Kurobuta ‘Black Pig’ + Meal set and for dessert a Home Made Mango Pudding.

Sashimi was amazing, well presented and super fresh. Egg Omelette Rice was their best dish and possibly the most famous dish this place has to offer. Presentation and the taste of the Egg Omelette Rice was amazing.

However, the Kurobuta and the Home Made Mango Pudding was under average and I expected more from their pork dish as they were heavily advertising their Black Pork. For the price of $30 for the Meal Set and $8 for the small sized Mango Pudding, you’re better off getting other items or stay away from the dessert.

All in all great place, would definitely come back to try other dishes and also re-order the Egg Omeletee Rice.

Will come back for:
+ Katy’s Curry - Kurobuta Loin
+ Kimchi Fried rice

For the year of the pig (Chinese horoscope), we thought we try out this place that specialises in Kurobuta pork (black Berkshire). The Katsu curry (loin) was a great set meal that came with a couple of pickles, a nice red miso soup, and a really well cooked loin to match the intense curry sauce and rice. This was delicious. We also had the kimchi fried rice which was surprisingly delicious (using short grain rice, this was smokey and the kimchi gave it a nice kick). The kaki fried combo lunch set we had though was a little monotone (this came with a variety of fried katsu pork and fish pieces), and a tad dry. Service was friendly and quick. The place does not have much seating, so get here early for lunch or dinner. A top place for a bit of katsu pork.

I would give this restaurant a 4.5 stars!

Gypsy and Pig has been on top of my go to list for a while now and finally I convinced my partner to go. We came here on a Saturday night with no reservations and lucky enough we got a seat. The restaurant is quite small with an open kitchen where customers can sit around and watch the chef prepare the dishes. The ambiance seemed pretty traditional Japanese. They were always playing Japanese inspired jazz songs as well - just like what you’ll hear in Japan.

The restaurant is well known for their pork and the whole restaurant is scattered with pig interior which I found really cute! So we were seated at the chefs table - there’s two other four seater tables on the side and it was quite crammed up. We ordered the special of the night which was the grilled Shabu shabu - thin sliced kurobuta premium loin with ponzu sauce, the sliced fresh tuna with special soy sauce based dressing, shaved parmigiano reggiano over the top, wagyu tataki, deep fried crumbled scotch egg, omelette fried rice, and deep fried crumbled kurabuta eye fillet.

We started with the entrees, the sliced fresh tuna with with shaved parmigiano. At first glance it looked quite underwhelming but holy, first bite and it was bloody good. I loveddddd the parmigiano on top. It was so good that cheese like flavour. It went so well with the tuna and that special soy sauce based dressing was so packed with flavour - recipe please! I couldn’t fault this dish and I would defs come back to second. Only negative was there was much of it but I guess it was an entree.

Next we had the deep fried crumbed scotch egg. This was my first time having scotch egg and I really enjoyed it. I love the gooey ness of the yolk and the crunchy outer layer coating the egg. It’s quite hard to perfect scotch egg because it’s so easy for the yolk to over cook but they did such a good job. I also really liked how they drizzled the mayo sauce - it went really well with if. I highly recommend this dish!

Last entree was the wagyu tataki. I was quite skeptical ordering this because usually tataki, as good as they sound on the menu, all end up tasting the exact same. However, this one was different. The meat was sliced really thin so it pretty much dissolved in your mouth. The garlic soy vinegar marinated the wagyu so well. It was so full of flavour and had it a little bit of acidity to it which I really liked.

On to main: we ordered the deep fried crumbled kurobuta eyefillet and the egg omelette rice. I couldn’t really fault both. The eyefillet was sooo tender and juicy. It reminded me of those awesome fried food you get in 7/11 in Japan - if any of you have been there you’ll know how awesome it is. The batter was light and just perfect. I wish the portion size was bigger tho. I was craving more when I finished. The egg omelette rice was so creamy and easy to eat. I love the mix of tomato sauce in rice and it went well with the shabu shabu special. The shabu shabu special was probably my least favourite dish of the night. The meat was quite average but the flavour was all there. I liked the smokiness of the meat and a drizzle of that lemon made it a lot more tastier.

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here. I’m glad I came to try it out. The customer service was great as well! I would love to come back and try out their other dishes!

I finally got to go to this small authentic japanese restaurant on the corner of a street near melbourne central. We were greeted with such friendly staff who gave us napkins and hot wet towels. The atmosphere felt very at home yet had a fine dining feel.

We ordered the gratin with melt cheese for entree which was extremely creamy and balanced. However, it felt just like potato and melted cheese, not really spicy. However, i could slightly taste the cod roe sauce which was addicting.

I ordered the omurice which was the standout dish for the night. I loved the sweet and umami flavour. The egg was so soft and fluffy, and I had such a heavenly spoonful.

Katsu don, was tasty however we thought it’d be crispier and more flavourful, but there was too much rice and presentation was alright. Overall our experience was worthwhile and we will come back to try the other amazing dishes.

Amazing Scotch Egg. Amazing Pork Tonkatsu.

The reason I didn’t give 5 was because I had tasted the better one in Maisen Tokyo, but in Melbourne, I hardly could think any other good Tonkatsu place.

The meat itself was moist and tender. The tonkatsu crumbs were not all the way crunchy, but the last bite that I had was superb as it was the crunchiest in contrast to the fatty meat in the middle. Really pleasure at the end.

The scotch egg was really good. Runny in the middle, big size and the meat filling was tasty.

Small Japanese eatery specialising in pork, Kurobuta pork to be exact which is the premium pork in Japan. The restaurant is decorated with all things pig and the kitchen itself is in full view of all the customers. We did not sit at the counter (usually for couples) but that'd be the preferred choice for me to watch the chefs hustle around that small space.

They've got a small selection of sake, the first we got was very smooth and the other more crisp and refreshing. Scotch eggs as an entree, perfectly cooked with a crusty outter shell, pork mince (which I think needed extra seasoning) and an egg which was not overdone.

I could not go past their deepfried crumbed Kurobuta eyefillet, I guess it left an impression on me last time I was here. Instead of a single piece that was sliced up, these were pork nuggets individually coated and deepfried. The result is a juicy pork morsel, the batter is light and you've got lemon and tonkatsu sauce to give it that extra zip. You could be fooled into thinking it was not pork as to the texture of the meat. We got most our mains as part of a set, rice, miso soup and several tiny sides.

I also tried one of their specials which was anago (saltwater cousin of the freshwater unagi) deepfried in a similar fashion. Delicate and fatty with a crispy coating, can't go wrong. Their pan grilled sliced Kurobuta scotchfillet with special ginger soy was good but did not highlight the quality of the pork as well as the tonkatsu versions as the sauce masked a lot of the porky flavours.

Dessert is limited and basic so we skipped out on that. Ultimate place for your tonkatsu pork fix and it's hard to divert away from that even though they have a great menu (their shabu shabu and omuraisu look amazing).

Pros: the food was delicious, the wait staff are very friendly and polite, love the atmosphere, fast service, the food is prepared in a tiny kitchen right in front of you.
Cons: small serving size for the price, gets very busy and loud.
Verdict: this is a nice place to get some yummy food if you are happy to splurge a bit, aren't super hungry, and don't mind having no elbow space or not being able to hear yourself think. Despite the cons, the food really was good and the service great.

I decided to try out Gypsy & Pig as it was recommended by a Japanese friend of mine. This little eatery has a chill and cozy kinda ambience that is pretty apt for you to relax while you dine and drink with your friend(s). Do note that this place has limited space so making reservation before you go would be advised to avoid disappointment.

Without a doubt, I was there to have their signature Tonkatsu don! Just thought the combination of the egg with the pork was yummz and their omu-rice was yummz too. Drinks' order such as wine or beer would totally go well with the dishes as well as the environment.

I would totally come back to explore other dishes! (:

It is a small and cozy restaurant in the corner of little Lonsdale street and Hardware Lane. There is no sign to know that restaurant before I enter. There are only 2 rectangle tables and a few bar chairs. It is better to make a booking before you go, otherwise, you need to wait for a long while.

My favorite dish is Omelette with fried rice which is one of the Japanese famous dishes. It is delicious. Sashimi is fresh. Miso is greater than other restaurant. Deep fried pork belly is tender and juicy, but no crispy enough. There are not only pork, but also beef steak. I will try next time.

This small restaurant is located on the corner of little Lonsdale St and Hardware St. 2 friends and I stopped by for dinner on a Friday night. The place was full at 6.30pm and we had to wait around 10mins before a table was free. We ordered 3 dishes to share. The omurice was tasty, and I really enjoyed the kurobuta belly & egg..which was definitely our fav out of the dishes we ordered. The kurobuta scotchfillet was salty and would've been better if it was served with rice. The dishes are slightly expensive for their small serving size but otherwise the food here is pretty good.

Make sure you make a booking because this place is cozy. It's small. You will get table seating if you are a group of four or more otherwise you sit at the bar and watch the chef cook. This place is known for their kurubota - or black pig meat. It is recommended by urbanlist that you try their katsu curry, their scotch egg, and their green tea cake/pudding.

We had the katsu kurubota curry, the scotch egg, some sushi, and the kimchi kurubota eggplant hotpot.

My food came in a steaming hotpot duh. The fermented smell was heavenly. The kurubota was so tender. It was such good meat - meat that I had never tasted before. The eggplant - well, you couldn't even tell it was eggplant. The rice was seasoned and I enjoyed having it on its own at the end.

All three of us loved our meals and can't wait to come back for more. Great portion sizes. Split bills accepted and attentive staff.

I'm coming back.

Ordered:
🍤 Homemade Creamy Crabmeat Croquette ($4.50 each)
🍚 Omelette Fried Rice, Japanese 'Omuraisu' with Kurobota & Vegetable Fried with Tomato Sauce, Mayo on Top ($22)
🍲 Soy Milk Based Hot Pot, Kurobuta, Vegetable, Tofu with Ponzu Sauce ($27)
🍮 Handmade Mango Pudding ($9)

Review:
Definitely not a uni friendly affordable meal but to treat someone out or yourself? Absolutely worth it.
Although the Soy Milk Based Hot Pot and Mango Pudding was definitely a bit lacklustre and bland, the Omlette Fried Rice with its fluffy, creamy, textured beauty is an amazing majestic plate to behold.

So much so that I'm going to bring a couple of my mates here to treat them (and myself).

Creamy Crabmeat Croquette was also deliciously fried, with the batter crunchy and flavourful without leaving that greasy feeling.

The interior was interesting. Book for a dinner session and you get one of two choices - so make sure you'll be able to leave by the appropriate time.
I loved the unique seating arrangements - around a open kitchen but the high walls allow that feeling of intimacy for you and your partner.

There's the attention to detail that I really appreciate. Little ornamental figurines of pigs surround the space which adds a sense of novelty even though the dining arrangement is quite fancy. The black warm moist towels to clean your hands with are suppperb.

... I can't stop thinking about that Omuraisu hahahaha.

Yummy food but a bit expensive for the amount given. We had the Udon with sliced Kurobuta scotch fillet, and the hotpot with kurobuta belly on rice and kimchi. I liked the flavour of the udon, could taste the stock in it. The udon noodles were a bit too soft for my liking, but enjoyed the dish overall. The pork in the hotpot was melt in the mouth and very tasty, and the kimchi went along quite nicely.
Service and ambience was good.

Pork! kurobuta!! where else could you find such a authentic tonkatsu shop in melbourne. Not many even in Japan. The pork is fried to perfection with simply crispy and tasteful. The sauce to accompany is also amazing and can see its homemade. The layout of the shop is efficient so the master can keep an eye out for any errors. The service however doesnt match the rest. Was served with a friendly wait staff but very difficult to communicate. I could understand but I hope she can explain it than just pork.. maybe it was her first couple of shifts. Points for: next level katsu

The Japanese are well known for their pursuit of perfection, whether it’s mastering a skill, or bringing out the natural flavours of a dish.
That’s what I like to think when I’m waiting 20+ minutes for my meal.
It is a full house though, and the chefs are busy perfecting the fry for each customer.
The restaurant is cosy and intimate, and the ventilation is poor. You can almost feel the oil in the air, but luckily we opted to sit outside.

G&P are champions of Kurobuta (Berkshire/Black) pork…but what is it? Maybe think of it as the Angus of the pig world – it’s essentially more juicy, tender and flavoursome.

The katsu is distinctly different from generic restaurants – the fine panko provides a light, hot and crispy batter.
The tonkatsu is soft, almost fall apart and has a nice porky taste. Add the tonkotsu sauce on the side and the bite is cut with fruity, tangy flavours.
The anago is also incredibly soft, and is quite different to sea eels I’ve had any other way. Comes with a tartar sauce, it’s like a really good fish & chips.
The hot stone cooked pork with eggpland and kimchi is similar to a hotstone bibimbap. Really flavoursome pork belly that just melts into the rice, and slowly crisps up against the hot stone.

Despite the ventilation, it’s worth visiting for katsu by chefs on their journey to perfection.

This is one of my favourite restaurant in melbourne!!! It is very small, and has only one chef, but every dish gives me some surprise. The crab meat croquette was so yum, with a bit smoky flavour, crunchy on the outside. The sushi roll looked a bit dry but in fact it wasnt. It was moist, full of flavour, but could have been better with an additional ingredient. The pork belly and eggplant rice was also one of my favorite dishes. The pork belly was so tender and the rice had a bit kimchi in there, which gaves it some texture. The scotch fillet had good flavor, but i was expecting it to be a fillet instead of slices of meat. I reckon fillet will make this dish even better!!

Feb 2020: Came back again to try some more dishes. We ordered the potato croquettes which were tasty. The scotch egg was delicious, perfectly cooked. The kurobuta loin was good (probably preferred the eyefillet), and the omuraisu was delicious (our very first!) Overall a wonderful meal. Recommend booking as it gets busy.

Oct 2017: Small and cosy Japanese restaurant hidden on Little Lonsdale that specialises in pork. Was warmly greeted and the dishes came out promptly. The nigri salmon sushi was surprisingly good! It's done aburi style (slightly seared) which gives a lovely smoky flavour, and the salmon was very fresh. Had the kurobuta eyefillet meal-set next and the crumbed pork was simply delicious. Small portion of meat considering the price, but easy for one person to finish. Overall, excellent quality food and I would readily return to try more dishes on the menu, but expect to fork out a little more than you might expect.

Known for its pork I was keen to give this establishment a go. It's a small cozy restaurant and from where we were sitting we could see the kitchen staff preparing our meal. We ordered the Omuraisu, Slow Cooked Kurobuta Belly & Egg in Sweet Soy and a special from the board which consisted an assortment of fried croquettes. I really enjoyed the Omuraisu and the croquettes were yummy. The Kurobuta Belly was most disappointing as it was only a few small pieces served with bok choy for $21 and the pork was average. Overall the price was a bit steep considering the portion size.

I'm absolutely a fan, went to this cute restaurant for at least ten times. It's a nice and cozy place to have lunch with friends. All dishes are prepared and cooked by the chef himself. So sometimes it could take long time to wait. But foods are great!
I've tried most of the dishes here and my favorite are hot stone kurobuta belly with eggplant and the Katsu Don lunch set! Omelette rice and stuffed chicken wing are also delicious!
But don't forget to make a reservation, otherwise it would be difficult to get a seat for dinner.

Finally, I have tried this cute pig place.
Had: oyster, chicken wing with chives and pork mince filling, soy milk hot pot and slow cooked pork belly with egg + meal set.
Good: everything we have ordered. The fried chicken wing with fillings is nice. The filling taste like Chinese chive dumping. I loved soy milk hot pot and slow cooked pork belly. Pork belly is so tender, just melting in ur mouth. Must-try!
Even though the waitress can't speak good English, the service is efficient. We had a wonderful night!

Walked into Gypsy & Pig on a Thursday night at 5.30PM without a reservation and we were able to be seated until 7PM. We ordered the potato croquettes, scotch egg, seared salmon sushi, spinach rocket mushroom bacon salad, chicken katsu and deep fried pork loins. All was very good - especially the scotch egg! Pricey in comparison to other Japanese restaurants in Melbourne however really delicious, different food and a great ambiance.

Quaint but oh so cool and relaxing vibes in this tiny restaurant hidden in lil Lonsdale street. Absolutely loved the food! On the pricier side but great flavours across all the dishes. Highly recommend to give it a try.

"It's okay", is what I said to my friend when we finished our meal here. We ordered Scotch eggs, sashimi, kimchi fried rice and slow cooked kurobuta - the food tastes great but portion sizes are definitely small. The Scotch egg was amazing, perfectly cooked! But... The slow cooked kurobuta? Three small pieces, the size of two Tim Tams stacked on top of each other, covered in sauce and sitting on two sad pieces of bokchoy - we were very disappointed at this portion size! Otherwise the fried rice was really well done and sashimi tasted fresh. Be sure to book otherwise you'll be relegated to the outside tables - with no heating! With drinks, the bill came to ~$70 for two.

I ate the fried oysters with tartar sauce and it was absolutely amazing. Although quite pricey at $4 per piece. Then I ordered a lunch special where it had fried pork, hamburger, eel & crab. Also really delicious. I'd recommend the food here, however the dining area is very small and the waiter wasn't attentive. Took some time to get their attention. Overall it wasn't bad but there could be room for improvements.

Awesome food!!!! Very impressive. The omelette rice looks cute but the taste is way more than that. My friend enjoys the fried prawn very much.

Hands down best modern Japanese restaurant in Melbourne! The nothing beats the Tuna Capaccio and Beef tataki! Always love seeing the chef in action!

It was soooo good! I loved the creamy crabmeat croquette. Ordered crispy noodle and it was good. Had a bit of my friend's Kari's don and the source was really good with everything. Gonna go back tomorrow as well lol, tow days in a row. Looking forward to their omelette rice.

Loved this place! Reminded me of being in Japan in one of the tiny hidden restaurants found in a secret alley way. It's cute and quite small so be sure to make a booking. The food was delicious. Loved the Japanese curry and croquettes. Definitely one of the more authentic Japanese restaurants around.
