I really love to come here for yum cha. The food is cheap and delicious. Their eggs tofu is my favourite and I love the beautiful setting of the restaurant with the water feature in the centre. The staff here are kind and it's always a great experience. Plus their egg tarts are incredibly scrumptious.
An old but new favorite seeming as this is the new Kum Den. Food is still very delicious, adequately priced and servings generous. One thing that I used to love to order but wasn't on the menu was the crispy fish skin! So delicious! They don't serve it anymore, or at least as this new place so I may need to venture to the old Kum Den to have it.
Service is quick and the staff are attentive and helpful. Can't complain 😊
This restaurant was recommended by a friend as I continue on my quest to find the best roast duck and rice in Melbourne. I wasn't disappointed.
The duck's skin was crispy, the meat was succulent with the perfect fat-meat ratio, and the duck sauce was very tasty. Add some piping hot rice, a side of bok choy, and a dash of chilli oil, and I now have my favourite restaurant in Melbourne for roast duck and rice.
I've really enjoyed the food every time I've come here! I think it's been 3 times now.
Last week we had a banquet for around 12 people and they managed to feed us just enough food. Yummy (thick) spring rolls. But the best is the Shanghai dumplings!! They hot soup inside is so tasty. I'd definitely recommend them!!
I also tried the yummy honey chicken another night... But it wasn't what I'd expect. The honey actually tasted like honey (and not just the sweet sticky stuff you may expect). It made it so much better.
It's a bit more expensive than some places in China Town, but I like the tasty food. You could definitely find something nicer, but probably more expensive near by.
The service is pretty good... We had a very charismatic waiter who was happy to take a photo of us all for my friends bday. Beware though, they told my friend we would all be seated on one table (she originally booked for 18ppl) but when she arrived they had us on 2 separate tables. Luckily (or unluckily) people cancelled.
Being a BYO wine place is handy. I'll be back for sure!
Popular and good value Chinese restaurant in one of the Chinatown laneways. Worth checking out their lunch specials which are under 10 bucks a dish. Pretty good deal. Also good for catch ups with large groups and the staff speak English and are accomodating. Recommended. . Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab $6.80
This place has two venues and I'm rating their bbq version next door. It's quite new and it has one of the best deals in town (if not the best). 6.80 for Chinese bbq on rice or noodles. The meats are great. Give it a try.
Great early dinner experience with 3 young kids who lived the bbq, fried rice and King Po chicken. Will be back. Friendly staff. Will have mud crab for the adults next time.
This place is heaven! The salt and pepper squid is exceptional and the duck wraps make me moist. BYO beer & wine, and outstanding service make this place a winner is my book. Keep up the good work team!
This place has recently relocated to Waratah lane opposite Mid City Arcade in Chinatown, right next to the "old" Kum Den. I highly recommend coming here for lunch as they have amazingly cheap lunch specials - $6.80 for any roast item (eg duck, chicken, bbq pork or crispy pork) on rice or noodles and only $1 extra if you want a combination of two. It was delicious - the skin of the roast duck was very crispy and juicy, the flavour was on spot, in fact I think this will be my new favourite place to get roast duck in Chinatown. They also have $18.80 two-person lunch set menus which include three courses! How can you resist that. Even without these special prices their dishes are all very reasonably priced anyway. The newly renovated restaurant is spacious and bright inside, service is friendly and efficient and you get free Chinese tea. Table cloths are the white glossy paper ones and the overall look of the place is very clean. Do yourselves a favour and try this one out! P.S. Just remembered that the lunch special $6.80 price only lasts until 26th November, so go there asap!
Went there for yum cha on Saturday at 11am. We arrived before they open even it said open from 11am. Realised staff were having their lunch, front door was open due to delivery man left it open.
We stepped back out, decided to go somewhere, manager came out told us we could wait inside but food not ready for another 15 mins.
Lucky it was a worthy wait. We had the great tasty Yum Cha I ever had in my life, here and oversea. I don't know was it because of everything freshly cook to our order. It the best taste ever.
One thing a bit let down is they don't have "cheung fun" (steam rice flour roll- plain/ with prawn/ beef mince/ BBQ pork).
100% sure will be back and recommend to others.
Solid lunchtime Chinese comfort food. Service average. Good value for money. I usually get the pork belly with preserved vegetables or the win ton noodle soup.
One of my favourites. Love their lemon chicken, fried rice, wan tons & banana fritters. It's my favourite restaurant in Chinatown & they remember me as well, as I've taken friends & family there to eat.
Service was great! I regularly visit china town for dinner but this was the first time visiting New Kum Den and the service was much better than anywhere else I'd been in china town. Food was delicious, nice atmosphere. Will be back.
Decent standard chinese fare but nothing out of this world. I was however impressed by the quality wine list, someone knows what they're doing. Decor is fine although becoming a little dated. Probably one if the better chinese places in the area.
Yummy food but charged for corkage. The food here was really delicious and the service was good too. My only issue was being charged $9 corkage, despite drinking tap water. I'll bring a bottle of wine next time to make it worth it!
Delicious and well-priced. Shanghai dumplings are delicious
Great food!!. We stumbled across this place and were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious and the seafood some of the best I've ever had. Service could be better. But overall, great place! We will be back.
Pretty good food. Attentive service as well. But nothing really special.
Good.. Nice place. not tge best but I'm not a fussy person. service is attentive. nice
The best yum cha. Have tried many and this was excellent. Service was outstanding. Wish I had found this years ago.
Some friends and I had the Supreme Banquet and were not disappointed. It was late on a Sunday so they had some stock issues with the wines and some courses, but they were more than happy to substitute them with what was on special.
The entire meal was delicious and so filling that four of us couldn't finish it all. Our original disinterested server was quickly replaced by a much more enthusiastic fellow who was happy to talk and entertain. Overall it made for a wonderful night, and really makes New Kum Den one of our favorite restaurants in Melbourne.
Great food. We had the $42 banquet and there wasn't a dud dish amongst it. Jan the waiter was very funny. Would go back for sure.
It was a pleasent atmosphere, friendly staff. Very filling and tasty food. We had a banquet for two and could not finish it all. Sensational dumplings and the favourite was a crispy chicken dish. We will go back.
Renewed my faith in Yum Cha!. I've been going to New Kum Den for a while, and lucky I went there as I before we discovered New Kum Den I'd become a serious Yum Cha sceptic!! The tables have turned now and I know longer have to be convinced to join friends for Yum Cha, I'm leading the pack to go whenever we get the opportunity!! I think what stands out is the freshness of the food, everything is hot and steaming when you get it and all the ingredients taste fresh! The staff are also extremely friendly and always ready to make a bit of a joke, not sure if that's just us though! It's great value or money (I'm not sure how people paid $22 for tea - we all ate our body weight in food and had bottomless green tea and only paid $25 each for the whole meal including tip!) I've never spent over $25 and we can put away a lot of food!! They've just had a refurbishment and put some new items on the menu including a few of the "soup style" dumplings (I'm not sure what else to refer to them as!) which are absolutely amazing!! If you're looking for somewhere to get Yum Cha in Melbourne make sure you give New Kum Den a try!!
Best yum cha ever!!. We've been here 6 or 7 times now for yum cha and the food has been consistently great. The service has been fantastic each time - particularly one of the guys who goes out of his way to make sure that we get what we're after. The pork buns are awesome and the shanghai dumplings and pork and prawn dumplings are some of the best in melbourne.
Very highly recommended, especially for those from out of town.
Excellent service. Yum cha was always fresh and tasty. One of the best in melbourne for me. Way better than dragon boat.
By far and away, the best Chinese meal I have ever tasted
Popped in for Yum Cha and was quite happy. Reasonable range of dishes about $5 each.
Yum Cha delight. Been going here regularly now for several months, and recently tried their weekend Yum Cha for the first time. It was exceptional, with prawn and ginger dumplings being "to die for". Steamed beef balls; chicken pies; also pretty damn good. Staff very attentive and they do not rush you , as some of the better known Chinese Restaurants in the Little Bourke Precinct tend to do. Have previously eaten for lunch during the week, and been very happy with the quality of the food, the service, and the value. Highly recommend this place.
Excellent food, but salty. New Kum Den is a favourite after-work dinner spot of mine. The menu is priced competitively and the food is always served fresh and piping hot, although it can be a tad salty at times. I particularly enjoy the Hong Kong style steamed barramundi, plus the fried chicken spare ribs.
Service levels fluctuate depending on the staff and how crowded the restaurant is, but I have always found the standard of the wait-staff to be at least adequate. Bookings are a must for Friday nights!
The best steamed soy duck. A place you would easily walk past if you weren't in the know. We tried the recommended staple of our friend, beef with a marmalade sauce - YUM. The daily special of steamed duck soy, serviced on a bed of tofu was wonderful. Love the real size stemware also. Awesome service, will return 100%.
Reliable great Chinese, excellent value. I have lunch at New Kum Den at least once a week - twice if I can manage it! The menu here isn't vastly different from loads of other places in Chinatown but the food is always fresh and delicious, flavours are authentic, and serves are generous. The place is also very clean and staff are always friendly and helpful. I've worked in the city for 15 years and I love Chinese food so I've tried my fair share of Chinese restaurants and I think New Kum Den is the best, reliable, go-to place in the city for a tasty and cheap Chinese meal.
Well worth the visit. If you go to this restaurant, try the duck. It is absolutely delicious. We had a variety of food from the yum cha menu and all tasted great. There is less variety here than other places such as the gold leaf, however, service is much better and the prices of the dishes are considerably cheaper. Staff were friendly and efficient. The dishes that they recommended were spot on. Definitely going back again.
Don't let the name put you off. Its chinese.. We went there recently and had a good time. I got the fake fish with green beans, my partner got some salt n peppa tofu balls (based on recommendation from this very website) and our friend had sweet n sour fish with special fried rice.
The beans and fish were nice, but it was plain clear that this fish was mock, it just didn't taste as fishy as it would be over at Enlightened Cuisine. Decent food, though.
The tofu ball dish seemed a bit dry with no sauce and just some slices of fresh chilli to spice it up. However, the spice mix on the batter was amazing. Unfortunately, I suspect that there was egg in the tofu, which was not mentioned on the menu.
Our friend seemed to have enjoyed his fish. I tried the sauce and found it a tad too sweet, but that's a personal choice.
The waiter was really friendly, the service was fast and attentive. The restaurant has quite a range and offers fresh fish and lobster from the tank. You can watch these pitiable creatures as you eat.
I say there is nothing wrong with this place, just don't expect too much of a bargain.
AMAZING. I only went to this restaurant upon the reviews from urbanspoon and I can honestly say that it is the BEST Chinese restaurant that I have ever been to! Heavily reccomend the banquets! Staff were great, delivery of food timely, and BYO! Perfect! I left full and am looking forward to my next visit!
LOVE IT!. We've tried so many Chinese restaurants and this is definitely one of the best. It provides high quality service and every time we go there, the manager knows what you want! The garlic eye fillet was so tasty! Highly recommended.
Great venue for two or twelve. Friday night very busy, but very relaxing and welcoming other times. Friendly staff, lovely food: claypots, dumplings, warm tea, greens - maaaarvelous.
Splendid, relax yum cha. Excellent service from the staff and they speak good English (thank God! unlike other yum cha place I've been to). The dim sum were spectacular although there wasn't as much selection as bigger yum cha place ie. Gold Leaf. The staff here don't rush you and there is no session timing. So you can sit here til closing if you want.
My only complain is that there wasn't any blanched kailan served which is my fav. And also no congee plus steamed rice paper rolls!
Our usual place for Yum Cha, great little place with beautiful yum cha. Fresh seafood dumplings and great range of dim sum! Definitely a place to make your regular.
Yummy yum cha. Went for a Yum Cha lunch today. No queue, great friendly service, excellent price and delicious food. Love the egg tarts.
Fantastic. I organised a banquet ($42 pp) for 20 people. The food and service was fantastic from the beginning right up to the finale (fried ice cream). I highly recommend this restaurant.
Awkward name, good experience. We went there for Sunday dim sum. There was no queue, unlike its Little Bourke St neighbours. The food was tasty and well presented. The staff were friendly and efficient and far superior to Chinatown's larger, more well known houses. We'll be back.
Very impressed !! Went to lunch with 7 and we loved it. Great service & huge portions for a good price. Can't wait to have the chicken & prawns steamed dumplings again!
Duck in XO sauce on fried rice. So good they must put heroin in it. Just get it!
Very enjoyable!. Had dim sum at new kum den today, and it was a enjoyable experience. dumplings were yummy, especially the pork ones. squid was great as well. Highly recommended, great value for money.
Yum Cha Veggie Style. It's pretty straight forward yum cha, but they had heaps of veggie options for us. We had a simple lunch perfect for hangovers and would be back as there seems to be even more vegetarian options over our 4 dishes.
We had two kinds of steams dumplings (the green ones had some sort of light bean or lentils in them), vegetarian spring rolls and chinese brocolli. Delish!
Very normal, very pleasant service and a buzzing Sunday atmosphere. Actually the temperature of the room was just perfect!
Chinese restaurants are just everywhere in Melbourne... This was my first time dining at New Kum Den to celebrate friend's birthday... (Interior) Firstly, they gave a complimentary broth . This wasn't really good... It was bland... Ther
Kat Spatula Spoon And Saturday
+4.5
So I said to Josh on a working Monday – how about we do lunch to celebrate our first wedding anniversary? Where would you rather go? Bistro Vue or New Kun Den? My treat since I totally screwed up and booked us into David Thompson’s book launch that night
Amazing Chinese food!!! I usually don't eat a lot of Chinese food because I got sick of it since I grew up with it but I am more than happy to dine at New Kum Den because they do such goooood Chinese food. Especially their hot pots!! I've tried their coconut chicken, drunken chicken and pepper hotpots and they're ALL amazing. I highly recommend this place for some amazing Chinese food and amazing hot pot!
Authentic and legit dishes!!! The peppercorn pig stomach hotpot and coconut chicken hotpot are one of the best I’ve had. Also the stir fried dishes are full of “wok-hey” (breath of the wok which is essential in legit and good stir fried dishes). Highly recommended!
Authentic Hotpot experience! You know the food is going to be AMAZING when in-house dipping sauce is delicious. They have extremely friendly customer service and focus on what they do best! Well priced for the food that you get. Will definitely come back for this specific flavour hotpot again!!
Been here twice and loved it both times! Vegetarian options are amazing - Mapo tofu, mushroom dish, truffle fried rice, dumplings, salt/pepper tofu.
Also do try walnut soup and coconut jelly
Premium quality of soup base, and ingredients. Perfect environment, good services. Best for family dinner, birthday dinner, or business meals. Worth to try!!!
This is a authentic Chinese restaurant which has a great hot pot. We have been many times and love it. The staff are really friendly and make us feel welcome. The food is so tasty and we only have good things to say about this place.
Pork Stomach and Chicken Hotpot is addictive! Booking is recommended as they are very busy during dinner time.
Been here a few times and really loved it! Even vegetarian options are amazing !! Great environment, awesome food, good services and resonable price! Best for family dinner, birthday dinner, or business meals. Will keep coming back !
