Review Pho Dzung City Noodle Shop - Melbourne

Minh Phung
The pho here is nothing special. The beef broth had some flavor, but the taste wasn't exciting and the authenticity of it wasn't there. The chicken that came with my pho was quite misleading from the picture on the menu. I thought that the chicken was going to be lean white meat, but instead I got served low quality dark chewy chicken that was just unpleasant to eat. The thick noodles ruined it for me, I believe that pho rice noodles should always be thin. I have had better tasty pho than this. The pho was a complete let down and an utter disappointment.

Beautiful bowl of Vietnamese beef broth. Full of aroma and the juice from the beef. I love the broken rice. Pork was juicy and tender. Shredded pork was super savory. Pork loaf tasted good.

Its a famous Vietnamese Restaurant like MeKong. Spring Roll & Rice Paper Roll, Cold White Coffee are OK. For the Pho, it's really not something special. I would recommended eating pho in Springvale, North Richmond, Sunshine or Footscray.

Looking for a descent Vietnamese noodle soup in Melbourne city ? Then this is THE place to go. Noodle soup was my daily uni life back in the old days and I've tried many I mean MANY different places in Melbourne CBD but there are always some issues. Noodle was wayyyy over cooked or couldn't taste deep rich flavour in the noodle soup. But this place does really tasty soup and gives you enough portion for the money. Do not get the large soup from this place it's wayyy to much mid size is more than enough, instead order the rice paper roll you will thank me later. You might think why I gave only 4 stars? Although the soup was great but I've had one step better in Christchurch also they take only cash here. You won't regret it give a go.

This is a great place for a quick and cheep lunch. A very filling and tasting noodle soup for around $14 is great value for money. It's not flash but fairly basic and wholesome.

Not the best pho I've tried, nothing special about their broth or ingredients but it wasn't too bad either. It's kind of in the midrange for everything from taste to price to service.

Very basic, semi clean restaurant, not particularly friendly staff, but yummy Pho at a reasonable price. Just don't forget to take cash as they have no ATM!

A large serving of Pho, perfect for Melbourne's cool weather. Will give you Hanoi feels at the heart of the CBD, their music is in Vietnamese as as well.

Insta: melbfoodie_mark
YT: MelbFoodieMark
-
Finally a pho place in the city worth mentioning! I was getting sick of expensive half-ass pho in the city but this one was on point & authentic. Just from the broth alone you will notice a huge difference compared to other places :) Big portion, decent pricing, and simply, flavourful. Don't expect fantastic service though lol. Possibly the best one in the city!

I did not pick this place! My friend wanted to go here and I obliged. I knew it was a mistake but it was too late to change plans. Pho Dzung City has been around for over 20+ years, certainly management has changed over time but quality of food has not changed at all.

šŸ”†LOCATIONšŸ”†

Pho Dzung City is situated on Russell Street, very close to the corner of Lonsdale Street, directly opposite to Stalactite Greek Restaurant.

I had not step foot into this place for over 20+years. Not much has changed. There are plenty of seating and when we arrived at 6.30pm on a week night there were only 2 other tables that were occupied with customers. The restaurant is clean and layout is simple.

šŸ”†SERVICEšŸ”†

Not much service. Tea and menu was given to us and we were asked to order at the counter.

Our food was made quite promptly (actually way fast) but thatā€™s because there wasnā€™t much customers.

There were still a lot of spare tables around and the waiter had pointed us to sit in a very odd spot which I wasn't too happy about, so we moved.

šŸ”†MENU/PRICEšŸ”†

I have a thing with menu's being printed on black paper/background, it just looks unprofessional/cheap and in this instance it does. Anyhow's, menu is simple to read and have pictures.

Bowl of Pho Noodle costs:
Small: $12.50
Medium: $13.50
Large: $15.00

We ordered:
2 x medium size Sliced Rare Beef Pho, $13.50 each
Prawn spring rolls (5 pieces), $8.00
Rice Paper rolls with prawn (2 pieces), $7.50

šŸ”†VERDICTšŸ”†

The medium size pho was pretty decent size. The soup broth was rather bland and quite oily. Also the soup wasnā€™t hot enough, so it took much longer for the rare beef to properly cook. The rare beef itself was sliced thinly.

I honestly couldnā€™t taste any prawns in the spring rolls. There was so much pastry, I felt that all we were eating was just the fried pastry. They were soo tiny the spring rolls. I could have accepted if it costed $8.00 for 3 decent sized spring rolls that way we can actually taste (and enjoy) the filling rather than having 5 tiny pieces.

The rice paper rolls were a bit better, but I think the filling had way more lettuce strips and vermicelli noodles. The prawns were very thinly sliced and there were no mint or basil leaves inside to give it that extra fresh herb flavour.

We three adults had a very unpleasant experience yesterday, we ordered 2 large noodle soup and 1 spring roll dish and asked for a small bowl to share the soup. We were told they charge $0.5 for each bowl to be used in the shop. I am completely speechless when they run business like this. I completely understand when they are doing this to avoid situations like people ordering 1 large noodle soup to share between 3 people so they can hardly making any profit for selling this table. However we have ordered 3 main dishes for 3 of us, which would definitely meet minimum spending requirement if there is any. However the shop staff still insist to charge $0.5 for each bowl used in the shop. This is absolutely ridiculous. We walked out without touching the dishes at all and I am sure they will resell these items back to any of the customer coming in later. Will never go to this shop again.

I came here for lunch and ordered the special chicken combination soup. It was good although would have liked the soup to have had more flavour. They also only accept cash. They have an atm conveniently located in the store, which charged $2.90 to withdraw cash.
The New Fave
While itā€™s not hard to find a Vietnamese restaurant in Melbourne, it is hard to find a big steaming bowl of delicious vegetable pho. Luckily, Pho Dzung City Noodle Shop on Russel Street has it covered.Ā . Offering 21 different types of pho (including tripe and tendon for the more adventurous type), and serving up dishes of lemon, beansprouts, Thai basil and chilli before you even get a chance to place your order, it's becomes pretty clear quickly that people only come here for one reason only - the pho. Whilst not technically pho (which I understand has to be made with beef broth), the vegetable noodle soup with chicken stock ($15) was one of the best Veggie (fake) phos Iā€™ve had in Melbourne. Itā€™s good mix of veggies, use of fresh produce and delicious fragrant stock made it a dish that I would definitely come back for.

3.8
Pho specializing eatery in the CBD.

The place is pretty spacious, altho space between tables can be bit close. During my first visit it was lunchtime and the staffs were all pretty nice, especially the lady serving me. However during my recent visit after lunchtime, the staffs were behind counters at all times, so we had to come over to order and ask for stuffs which was bit disappointing, food did come out pretty quick.

1st visit:

I had my pho with beef brisket slices, beef fat, tendons and meatballs (beef base soup). I actually asked for chicken as well but she probably didn't remember or the chef made a mistake. Either way, I was okay with that. Their medium size was so generous, my friend had their large which was huge. I do think that they added more noodles rather than meat, though I'm not very sure. Anyhow the meat was generous, the soup was quite flavorful and hearty. Beansprouts, basil leaves and lime slices on the sides were pretty fresh.

2nd visit:

Special beef pho (medium) had all the same beef parts as the one I had previously, though I changed the sausage to meatball instead. Still highly enjoyable, meats were tender, soup was still tasty and portion was still generous. However also still bit too much noodle to pair with the toppings.

Bun bo hue (traditional hue spicy beef soup) was also really yummy, definitely something to have if you're after more flavour and it's not too spicy too, quite mild even which I liked. The noodle was nicely cooked, with nice pork ham, beef brisket.

Prawn spring rolls were yummy, nicely fried and had great flavor, good filling to skin ratio too!

Overall, price was worth the portion and taste, though my recent visit suggests that they need to work on their service.

P.S It's cash only unfortunately, though ATM machine is apparently provided (as written in the signboard)
ALSO their door is such a PAIN to open and close.

( follow for more!āœØ)

ļ½˜ļ½˜ļ¼Œļ½Šļ½ļ½…ļ½Œļ½Œļ½…

Iā€™ve been here several times and I always without a doubt get my beef ball pho. They offer it in three bowl sizes (I usually get medium). Always delicious and the tea is always nice and warm.

Go-to spot for a warm and filling traditional Vietnamese soup in the city with quick and efficient staff. management should start accepting card as a form of payment.

Jā€™s score 3.5 stars.Ā J had a late lunch here on Wed 10th April ā€“ it was moderately busy since it was after 2.30pm.Ā Place was clean, staff were pleasant & efficient, free tea was supplied šŸ‘.

She had a medium Vego pho > Enormous serve & good value šŸ‘.Ā It had tofu, wombok, broccoli, carrot, bok choy & spring onions. The stock was vegie based too.Ā Thai basil, chilli, lemon & beanshoots (not corked) were supplied separately.Ā Overall a tasty & soothing meal, but not up there with the best phoā€™s sheā€™s had.Ā She would return though, as it was a pleasant spot to have a quick lunch in the CBDā€¦

A good pho place. Mainly go here to eat BBH and three colour drink. The consistency can be a hit and miss on the many occasions I have visited. The broth on good days are great flavour and on not so good days is pho with a bit of spice (bland). The drink is always consistent which is good. Average price.
Foodz0r
Good Pho. Standard consistent with many Melbourne Pho restaurants. Spring rolls are great too. Long and crispy. Definitely better than most places that screw you on less noodles and trying to be hipster. This place just does it the old fashion way. One negative was the pork chop was a bit small, for the amount of rice they gave. Good place to come for lunch. I give it 3 stars. Simple but done well without being amazing.

I canā€™t remember how many times I have walked past this shop but didnā€™t get a chance to try. When it comes to pho, I tend to have my own favourite place. However, it was worth trying in here. Will definitely come back on a cold day

Super disappointing, from the foul smell when we walked in to the bland pho, limp/browning lettuce and spring rolls that tasted freezer burnt. We only came here as our fave pho place wasn't open but we won't be back.

Food 4/5
Service 4/5
Environment 3.5/5
Not very good today! I order large but provide me the medium! You know I will not ask you to change because I can guess your chef exactly will just put the old one back to wok and add some more! The noodle will bad if I ask do that. And this is the first time I got PHO ONLY have two pieces of beef. No shop like yours. I would not come again! Compare with the first time it make me very disappoint.

(The First time)
The Pho shop in CBD has located near the China town but not the famous one which is recommended by famous Chinese foodie Chua Lam(that one in Richmond). But this one is the best in CBD as well. The soup base is tasty and rich flavor and also not thirsty after the meal. The dish also valuable and huge size for me.
Carynn
Not the best pho I've tried, nothing special about their broth or ingredients but it wasn't too bad either. It's kind of in the midrange for everything from taste to price to service.

Simple, authentic pho. If I'm in the city and after a bowl of savoury, beefy goodness - I come here. It's no frills and not a place for a date if you're looking music and ambience (which this place has none of!) but if you're after a bowl where you can indulge in some spoon slurping on your own OR with friends you have no shame with - then this is the place for you.Ā

I've had a few of the beef pho variations (beef ball, combination beef etc) and they've all been good. I've also had the prawn rice paper rolls which I wouldn't order again as I found these really bland without the sauce. The prawn filling was also were sparse (seemed as though there was nothing in it!).
Montastic
We ordered 3 bowls of spicy beef noodles and a portion of prawn spring rolls for share.
The food was as delicious as Vietnamese food should be. The portioning was good as well.
Quinn Tran
Iā€™m pretty harsh for Vietnamese food lol, but this is ok, broth is alright, good portion, nice staff, nice price, sometimes staffs donā€™t really pay attention to the customer, otherwise, theyā€™re good
Kesu Tu
I only come here for the beef pho. I usually get rare beef and brisket or special beef. Great value.
Unfortunately, broth is inconsistent. Some days it's phenomenal, other days it's too light and watered down. Never truly bad though.
Yuhao Chen
They seem to have two kinds of soup stock for their pho. One is chicken soup, the other is beef soup. Chicken soup is light while the beef soup is heavy and tasty. Personally, I like the beef soup one. The portion of their side plate was pretty decent, there are basail leaves, chilli pepper, lemon and bean sprouts. Basically, the portion is for two person. The meat in thier pho is just meat, I mean there are nothing special. I have to point out that their beef tendons are quiet "chewy", they suppose to be soft if they cooked it well. I personally recommend their beef sausage. You could actually see and taste the beef chunks in their sausage, combined with the fragrance from black pepper, it is so good even by itself.
Fatcat
Solid, genuine pho place in the city with no youthful fusion vibe or bright, fluoro renovations. This is the place for no frills pho, if you want to feel like youā€™re dining on Victoria st. Service is fast; bowls are huge.

Food : āļøāļøāļø I ordered the grilled pork, pork chops and fried egg on broken rice. Taste good but the grilled pork was a bit dry
Price : āļøāļøāļø Good price
Service : āļøāļøāļø Good service / Friendly staff
Ambience : āļøāļøāļø There is enough room but nothing else special

Seems like I've been having a lot of pho lately :) out of all the recent ones I've been to, this one has the most meat. Broth was ok too. I ordered medium and was pretty full. Decor wise, it looks shabby and don't expect good service. We weren't served upon entry and we just went and grabbed menus ourselves and ordered at the counter.
Leslie Yapi
Standard place for vietnamese food

Pho is ok.
However, their spring rolls are so good. Despite the fact that its the tinniest spring roll ever!!
Qianyi Lillian Li
A really tasty pho place nearby Chinatown.

I ordered a large sliced rare beef pho with a extra bowl of beef. Don't get the order like me if you the have a huge appetite. Because the portion here is super big and the large definitely can full two people.

A nice and affordable place to stop by for lunch.
Oodreiilittlepotato
Went here few years ago with my cousin, and nothing change!
Had 1 large beef and beef balls for 2 people. The portion is huge! And we can not finish itšŸ˜± i feel like the soup lack in flavour a bit~
We also have rice paper rolls-shrimp filling! Just okay as well :)
Linda
Reliable consistent tasty pho in the city
Service is quick and the broth is flavoursome
They give you free tea which is a bonus
Donā€™t change pho dzung- youā€™ll always be an old fave
Flying Forward
Quietly serving legit Melbourne pho, Hung Dzung doesnā€™t need photos of celebrities or achievements on the window (unlike Mekong).
Compared to Mekong, the soup is the legit flavour found in Springvale, Richmond, Footscray, etc.
Itā€™s clean, clear, you get the background of star anise, cassia, ginger, etc in the beef bone stock. Itā€™s flavourful.
I usually go with the special combination beef and chicken, and they provide everything I expect ā€“ creamy liver, beef loaf, pigs blood (I never eat it though).
Also provided is the required sides ā€“ basic, fresh chilli, lemon, and chilli sate sauce.
At $12.50 you canā€™t go wrong. Comes out quick, and itā€™s a satisfying meal.
Cash only!
Nick Wilson
The food was pretty bad. No flavour. 0 onion and only two small pieces of each beef and chicken for a large bowl. The tea was also so watered down it tasted gross... I would not recommend this place

Pho Dzung situated close to the corner of Russell Street and Lonsdale Street.
This restaurant is one of the oldest Vietnamese restaurants around CBD but they maintain the restaurant (exterior and interior) pretty good.
The restaurant looks clean from outside and it's bright and notĀ a typical traditional Vietnamese restaurants. It's pretty modern inside.

Unfortunately, the table was little bit oily; I reckoned it wasn't cleaned properly.
We're ignored for sometime to get our order, the customer service wasn't attentive though it wasn't busy at all.

We both ordered Grilled Pork Chop, Fried Egg, Shredded Pork with Broken Rice for $12.50 / each.
The grilled pork chop was grilled and seasoned well. The fried egg was well made.
Unfortunately, the shredded pork was under seasoned and the proportion given between broken rice and protein was uneven. (*From the photo taken it looked alright)
They served too much rice compared to protein.

The taste, value and quality of broken rice were still less than average comparing to the any of Vietnamese restaurants in Springvale or North Richmond.

Service: 2.0
Price: 3.0
Speed: 3.0
Taste: 2.5

Yay: N/A
Nay: Broken Rice

Location: 234 Russell Street, CBD, Melbourne, VIC
Phone: 03 9663 8885

I used to go this place often as the pho used to be pretty decent in the CBD.
I visited here for lunch today and ordered sliced chicken pho without coriander as I hate it. And the girl who served me said that they donā€™t have coriander. They brought me chicken and beef pho(so this was the first issue) and I had to send it back as I ordered chicken pho! And then I received the chicken pho with coriander. I told the server who took my order that i asked not to have any coriander and there is in the soup and was told that itā€™s just one piece but obviously there are heaps of coriander. I said I donā€™t want any coriander in my soup and she was blaming me saying that you shouldā€™ve asked no onion as it comes with onion. Does it make sense? I just donā€™t want any coriander I donā€™t mind having onions. Anyway finally I got the right pho and the soup was hardly edible. The taste of chicken smell was too strong, I ordered medium pho as I love pho but couldnā€™t even have half of it. It was yucky and the chicken slice wasnā€™t the chicken meat I think they put some kind of chicken giblets or something.
Never going back seriously the taste was not understandable and the service was bad as well.
Split The Bill
There seems to be Pho Dzungs everywhere, but not sure if it's a franchise or the same owner. Regardless of this, this pho joint feels like most Vietnamese restaurants, the container of utensils, the hoisin and chilli sauce, the container of chilli flakes.

The pho itself is good, I like the broth. Reasonably priced. Quick service. The quality of the bean shoots and vietnamese mint may vary but not a deal breaker - there must be a better way of offering beanshoots and mint that doesnt result in waste (but this is a widespread issue I have with pho places!)

Warning - this place does get busy at work lunchtimes.
Two Sheds
I loved this place! Iā€™d give it 4.5 if Zomato still allowed half marks. I had 25 minutes in between appointments. I asked them to serve me quickly. My rare beef and chicken pho arrived about 13 seconds after I ordered it. I loved it. I thought it was really nicely flavoured with lots and lots of beef and chicken. The extra plate of bean shoots, mint and chilli is very useful for extra flavour and texture. I couldnā€™t get over how big the bowl of pho was. I thought the whole thing was delicious including the noodles. At the all low price of $12, I felt like Iā€™d committed highway robbery. I really enjoyed this experience and I made my appointment on time!
Mustard
It's got all the furnishings of a suburban Vietnamese restaurant that you'd think for moment you were actually there. Once there's a cool change in summer I can't help but sneak in some cheeky noodle soup!
* Broth - a less potent and complex stock but at least it isn't overly salty. You can enjoy more of it without being overwhelmed but I do like my punchy flavours from time to time.
* Noodles - not my favourite, I could taste the rice noodles more than the broth. Noodles just didn't mingle with the soup and just wasn't silky.
* Meat - I got a little bit of everything with their pho bo dac biet. The highlights were the soft gelatinous beef tendon and the thinly sliced beef which was lightly pink and tender.
* Condiments - your standard fare, nothing much to report here.
* Value for money - portions were very generous and was on the cheaper side for CBD standards, very filling leaving you satisfied.
Located Russell street , Vietnam cuisine pho , the customer service is good . The portion is large , so and cheap . Ok letā€™s talk about the taste , the taste is good thumbs up , and the meat a lot . Recommend ^^ cheers

Prompt service. Soup was great! Prawn rice paper rolls were pretty good. The dipping sauce goes well with the rice paper rolls. Nice pho place in the cbd.
Clvnml
Iā€™m a regular here, nice Pho soup as well as their rare beef or chicken breast ,good price and very quick service.
The other on rice menu (crispy chicken and pork chop) also a great deal.

However just now I tried the iced coffee for 4$ and itā€™s way too much ice, they put like 8-10 ice cubes inside a medium-tall glass, whereas standard drinks only needs 4-5 ic cubes.

When I was a student, I often go to this restaurant to eat pho, very large size and low price. As a noodle lover, never disappointed. Now, cost higher, but the flavor is hasn't change.
Ferry Gondo
Beautiful bowl of Vietnamese beef broth. Full of aroma and the juice from the beef. I love the broken rice. Pork was juicy and tender. Shredded pork was super savory. Pork loaf tasted good.
Piggyeatalot
Pros : service is super quick. Their chilli oil is quite good
Cons: the Pho isn't that great. The noodles are not silky smooth and the condiments are not that fresh. Their soup is a bit meh
VodkaO_ZS
The pho here is no bad, and the rice paper roll is really great (especially with the sauce they serviced). The iced black coffee is a bit too sweet but I think it's because the cold weather stop the ice to melt. Overall the food here is nice, and I almost finish the soup without feel too salt.
Julycheee
I think you get a bit more value for money in Richmond, but it's still cheap and a warm bowl of good pho is hard to beat. The broth could be a tad stronger, but otherwise spot on. So delicious! The service is efficient, and the staff were nice. The restaurant is also fairly big and able to seat larger groups at larger tables.
Euse
Simple set up but I can't complain it was very clean. The chicken pho could do with some more chicken but it tasted fresh with the basil. The service was also very quick.
Neal Lin
Been the place three times this month even though I'm not living in Ct! "Must come" place when being alone seeking for hot soup while walking aimlessly! The large Pho in Dzung City noodle shop is literally the Giant version of normal Pho and can feed two people like I saw today in shop! They also offer variety of beverages including classic Vietnam iced coffee at affordable price!! Whatever you are coming alone or with some friends, if want big portion dish at reasonable price! Dzung Noodle Bar is the place you can't miss thošŸ˜›
Ashy Sheppard
This is the only place i go for pho nowadays.
The broth in every soup is amazing, it doesn't even need condiments to give it the kick.
Everything feels fresh and is definitely value for money.
Service was very friendly as well, food came out so fast and it's very convenient for people in a lunch time rush.

I would recommend this place to everyone i know.
Amy Ahmi
Beyond words, the flavour of the soup, soft glass noodles and tender beef slices! This hidden gem is located near Chinatown and if you dont look carefully u can miss it easily. Came here for dinner w my girls on a saturday night and the restaurant was pretty empty, so u really dont have to wait much to have your fave pho and Vietnamese rolls šŸ˜‹ pretty much gobbled down all the noodles and beef PLUS the soup. Definitely going back for more !!!
J King
I always get the sliced rare beef pho and it never disappoints. This is a very busy restaurant but they will always squeeze you in if there are free seats. The service is super quick.
Shimona
Pretty authentic Vietnamese fare. That said, I wasn't blown away by the quality of the meal. I was brought the wrong meal, and when I brought it to the attention of the man I had ordered from, he was grumpy and not apologetic at all. The drink (4 colour bean) looked great, but wasn't anything special. And the tiny enclosed restaurant was sporadically hit by most jarring blender grinding sound. Doubt I'll be back.
Spaghetti Monster
I used to work nearby and frequented this place at least twice a week in the winter months. One of the best pho places in Melbourne and they're always generous with the basil, chilli and lemon.
Vicky Wallis
I ordered pork and prawn spring rolls and special chicken combination, everything was good... Except for the fact that my Special chicken combination pho was definitely special because it had plenty of chicken breast and ONE piece of liver.
Quite disappointing.
Xuan Wang
Came to this place with my friend who wanted to try pho, I don't eat beef so I can only order the noodle soup with bbq chicken. The bbq chicken is too sweet for me but the soup is nice.
Melbourne Culinary
A good bowl of pho has traditionally been hard to find within the Melbourne CBD. Many restaurants have tried to replicate the food and the look of the well known Vietnamese restaurants you would find in Springvale and Richmond but few have succeeded.
Will Tran
As someone who truly eats exquisitely fine homemade pho, even tasty takeaway pho from Springvale. You should only come to this place for pho and pho only. Everything else they serve - seems to be on the mediocre side.

Yes, it has a typical vibe of not the best service around for an Asian cuisine restaurant. The waiters/waitresses will be really attentive when taking your order or hand your table some free tea. Nothing major, beyond that.

When I went to the toilets, I reckon I could've almost broke my leg on the first step. It was so steep! Once you open the door for the toilets, look down and step carefully. Then carry on.

If you're after some good pho, this place will do somewhat of the trick. The large size of any pho option will fill you up quickly. I had a beef brisket, and the servings of the beef was so little, was given 4 slices max when the bowl could've held like 7 more slices.

The worst seats at this place is the table near the door. Not only does the breeze come through once awhile, but you also learn that some people don't shut the door behind them.
Vegemite Girl
Warning- thisĀ place is hazardous.
The heavy door leading to the restrooms from the restaurant has a step directly below it.Ā There is no sign of warning on the door. One of my party fell onto their knees, grazing their palms in the fall. Staff could not have cared less- the 'manager' responding with a smarmy grin when we suggested a warning/ note be placed on the door.
Also, no eftpos is available-Ā what year are we in,Ā 1996?

Shame about the people/ service/ surrounds, as the food was nice. We came for lunch and had theĀ lemongrass chicken with rice, grilled chicken vermicelli and prawn VietnameseĀ salad. Barley tea (free) also nice.
Asian Food Ninja
Not so Pho king good ninja!!!

Warning personal preference here!!!

So as a Sydney born and rasied Vietnamese i love Sydney Pho, not being bias but the stock and noodle difference in both states are noticeable.

First off the noodles are not fresh fresh, this just means they get rehydrated, also the stock is light and fragrant but it seems like the wrong stock for pho. Seems more like a Hu Tieu stock which is usually a chicken or seafood stock.

Great value though ... Big bowl for 12.50.

Until next time .... Keep eating!!!!
Haymen Ye
Absolutely dodgy place. Charged us for tap water and when I told the owner this was illegal she said she put it in a glass cup and had a straw so that's why it justified $1 for a cup. Cash only as well. Horrible service will not be coming back
Khpn
I used to come here quite regularly and they always make a good pho here. I also like their bun bo hue despite it being of a different style to the usual herby ones you get. It used to be better value but now they jacked the prices up. They are not stingy with their servings.
Michelle Khor
Ordered the rare beef with beef balls and sprig roll on rice vermicelli . The pho soup was not bad, could taste the flavor but a little bit more spices to have that extra authentic flavor would be good!! The rice vermicelli was good, the noodles was not to dry. The spring roll was not cook too oily so that is a thumb up! The sauce for the noodles was nothing special but it taste good overall! The service was alright, fast attending but not happy waiters.
Pineapple San
The pho here is quite flavoursome and the serving size is very generous. It wasn't the cheapest pho I've had, but definitely reasonable for city pricing. I've tried the sliced beef pho which was delicious and had lots of meat! I've also tried the chicken pho, which although the soup base was great, the chicken itself wasn't. The meat was tough and had some strange smell to it...Ā
Anyhow, will be back for some very decent pho (just not the chicken)!
Gee
Very decent sized serving! Had the crispy chicken with egg noodles. The broth definitely wasn't as tasty as other places, but the chicken was quite nice. Agree with some of the other reviews that it is a bit of a scam if you can order their food through and app but you can only pay by cash.

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is in full swing and the work gang and I dropped by and had a few (more like a plethora) of giggles and of course need to refuel ourselves. Mr and Mrs Tequila really wanted to have Vietnamese so we stopped at Pho Dzung on Miss Mouseyā€™s recommendation. We ventured in and grabbed a table by the front and the dishes werenā€™t even cleared up yet and they didnā€™t even clear it up until we kept hassling them (seriously guys?). Anywho, they gang let me order everything and I decided to go for the popular Vietnamese dishes! First up, the drinkies. I got the Vietnamese ice coffee (ca phe sua da) and the jackfruit smoothie. The guys loved the ice coffee since it was sweet and they commented it was a tad strong for them. The Jackfruit smoothie had jackfruit chunks and it was super sweet. No one enjoyed the jackfruit smoothie which was a shame.

The service here wasnā€™t great, we had to constantly ask them to clean the table and they didnā€™t even acknowledge us when we walked in. The food was very average and I wouldnā€™t be coming back any time soon.

Consistently good pho - cheap, quick and filling. Ā The soup is clear and not fatty like some other shops. Ā The restaurant gets quite busy over lunch so it's recommended you get in early. Ā Staff and are nice and friendly.

I love this place. I used to eat here 3 days a week. Just walk in and ask for the large 22. Best chicken boom going around. Pho isn't too bad either.

Good value meals for the price, food is always fresh and servings healthy.

You may need to share a table, but the tables are clean and its part of the atmosphere.Ā

Highly recommended.

This place had been opened for a long long time and they offer you great traditional Vietnamese Pho noodle. The taste is really good and it's so nice that they can keep the quality and prices the same for so many years. Service is super fast. It's one of the best place for fast, cheap, tasty Pho.

Chicken not fresh , had that old taste like it was a few days old . Very disappointed as the soup looked OK . Much better at a shopping centre stall in a paper cup

Vietnamese food is enjoying a bit of a Renaissance in Melbourne right now with trendy Vietnamese "street food" restaurants popping up on every block, serving boutique Banh Mee, rice paper rolls and the eponymous Pho soup.

Pho Dzung on the other hand has been here from the start, long before Vietnamese was trendy. This restaurant would feel equally at home in the Vietnamese communities of Springvale, Richmond or Footscray.

For authentic Pho in the CBD for a good price ,with little frills, this is the place to go.

The trendier foodies will no doubt prefer one of the many newer places, where you will find better service and food that is more "refined", but the price will be higher and the flavor not as authentic.

When you're here, definitely try their pho. Its relatively cheap compare to the other vietnamese on swanston street. Their pho also taste better.

Came here for lunch on our last day of Melb visit, as many people on the web recommended them. Ordered combination beef pho, the noodle is good but the beef was only so so - a little bit dry. The food isnt bad but there is no Wow factor, I still like the ones in Adelaide more - maybe should try the one in richmond next time.

Good food... My second pho experience... Complimentary tea which was nice. Had the sliced chicken medium and added heaps of chilli was great! All for $11

My favourite Vietnamese dish! Rice vermicelli with grilled chicken, fresh aromatic basil and mint, crunchy cabbage, toasted peanuts tossed with salty, sweet and sour well balanced sauce! So fresh and fulfilling! The spring rolls were crispy with the right amount of filling to wrap and a dip in the well balanced sweet, salty, sour sauce that elevated the whole dish. My friend had the beef pho and it was brothy comfort food (thankfully it did not have the typical msg+salty taste)! This is food that warms the heart during a cold day.

Wow, that was terrible. Ordered the Special Beef Combination and Beef Brisket Pho and it had everything right, except we were given what we think was chicken broth. None of the depth of flavour or colour you would expect from a bowl of beef Pho, definitely a disappointing experience. Staff were also very dismissive / cold, which is usually the case in a Pho place, but usually the quality of the food at least makes it tolerable!

An oldie but a goodie. I eat here at least once a fortnight. At $10 a bowl, its a cheap, tasty and speedy lunchtime meal. The pros: cheap, the best broth of any pho I've ever tasted, quick, accessible, free tea, open til late. Would recommend the bbq chicken pho, spring rolls and vermicelli salad. Cons: rude wait staff, chilly when the door is open in winter, often have to share table with others, cramped when busy, get rushed out when meal is finished. Also what business is advanced enough to have an app but only takes cash?? Finally, at $10 for a meal, I would question where the produce comes from and how the chickens, cows and pigs are treated before they end up on my plate.

Worst service.. asked for chilli and he just walked away. When i asked again came and just dropped it on the table???do not expect good service or leave satisfied. Still thristy and parched after 3hours
Too many pho shops are popping up everywhere but these guys make one of the best phos in town.

They have been around for the last 25 years I believe.Ā

Cheap comfort food. Win!

Probably one of the best Vietname Pho store in CBD. I ordered a large chicken egg noodle and it gave a quarter chicken with really nice flavour! The noodle was cute and veggy was fresh! Strongly recommend!

Bad service! Spicy beef noodle soup isn't hot, just warm and not spicy at all. There's other Vietnamese restaurants that will service better than here. Won't be coming back for calling a customer fat.

Have been here for years. Pho is pretty good. Just watch out for the door. It swings once you turn the handle. Wish they will fix it soon...

Today I went to eat pho with girlfriend Lena. I got a large bowl. I skipped breakfast but I still couldn't finish it 慠慠. The weather was terrible but the pho was outstanding. I rate pho dzung 4 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended!! 態態態態

One of the best place for a hot bowl of Phį»Ÿ in the CBD. The soup tastes very nice and beef is always tender that it melts in your mouth. However, I don't recommend ordering any others dishes but phį»Ÿ in this restaurant, did not have very good experience with them.
This place smells like a urinal. I had broken rice and the shredded pork was off.

They took 50mins to prepare my order?!. Took 50 mins to prepare my order (pork chop on broken rice). Didn't even apologize for the delay. Food was bland anyway. AVOID!

Special Beef Combination (S:9.50AUD/M:10.50AUD/L:11.50AUD) Mmmhmmm, a bowl of steaming hot pho to warm up my belly. At Pho Dzung, trust me when I say that small means medium, medium means large, and large means super sized. This one above was in small. I requested for no tripes. The bowl came with rare beef slices, beef flanks and beef tendons. I was too scared to eat the tendons and so I dumped them into my lunch partner's bowl. The broth was pretty good, more on the sweeter side and the flavour was almost there. Not the best broth quality but good enough to satisfy my cravings. For really good beef and I meant scotch fillet beef on your pho, try Pho 24 on Flinders lane. Now that I am filled up and heated up I am ready toĀ battle the winds outside. Pho Dzung is, hands-down, the most famous and delish Vietnamese restaurant in Melbourne! Thereā€™s a Hong Kong writer who has said: The best pho in the world is Pho Dzung! S & C both agree that this is the best pho place we ever had. If one day we can travel back to Melbourne, Pho Dzung is a must re-visit place for us.

Pho Dzung is the best pho Iā€™ve experienced in Melbournes CBD and the service is noticeably friendlier than other bustling pho establishments.
Danielle
Not only is the pho seriously msg-erific and prone to cause serious headaches and parched throats, I was actually poisoned by the food this time around. And I think the deliciousness of the pho has gone downhill too, just sayinā€™.

There are a few pho places aka Vietnamese noodle soup joints in the city, but the standouts for me thus far (am always excited to hear more recommendations) would have to be...
Foodlovesmymouth
The Pho was alright, not bad but nothing out of the ordinary. I got the Grill Pork Chop, Fried Egg, Shredded Pork with Broken Rice...

Wow! Iā€™m now addicted to Pho! A massive bowl of the most magnificent tasty broth (not too much fat).

Tastewise, the noodles were good, salty but still not that bad. Portions were good as well.

It's my favourite pho place in the city.
The food at Pho Dzung City Noodle Shop is tasty, cheap and filling and the staff are slightly friendlier than the other Vietnamese restaurants in the city. I'm guessing that being a little less busy would have something to do with it. If you get hit by a pho craving while in the city, my advice is to avoid the popular restaurants in Swanston St and take the time to venture into this establishment instead.

A great pho place should be cheap (mainly under $10), have plenty of pickled onions and great flavoured broth and rice noodles. The rice noodles are flat and wide. Oh and speedy service should be had. We list five of our favourites below. 1. Hao Phong- The bowls of pho were $10 each. Sure it may seem a lot for a pho but the bowls are huge and there's always free tea. The meat was done nicely and I loved the beef balls. What I didn't like was the tripe; it was too chewy and a little bit undercooked. That and the giblet. Hao Phong But put all that aside the broth was flavoursome with all the onions in there and it was sweet. 2) Pho Dzung in the city- this is the best place for a pho. I got a small bowl at $8 and it filled me up. You can check out my other post 3) Pho Chu the- in Richmond- yummy and really fresh. The place is run by real Vietnamese. They have the pickled onions that I so love as well as the broth and the meat. Pho Chu's pho- this was taken with the old camera. 4) Pho Hung

I was pretty ecstatic when I stumbled across Pho Dzung sitting in the CBD area as I could recall a pretty delicious affair at the Richmond branch last year. This branch definitely does not live up to its Richmond sister for me though. My disappointing four colour drink - tapioca, mung bean, coconut milk, red kidney beans: which I didn't like! I don't know why this was different to the one I had before. The contents just wasn't the same and certainly didn't taste as good. Spicy Traditional Beef Balls The noodles come in three different sizes, Small ($8.50), Medium ($9.50) and Large ($10.50). What we had were the medium sizes. The prawn spring rolls were good, crisp and delicious minced prawn filling inside. I quite enjoyed my spicy traditional Vietnamese bowl with pork loaf and beef slices. They were definitely not shy with the spiciness of it! Kenneth's beef balls were good, but the noodles was just not as silky smooth as the one from Richmond, also the broth was just okay. Pho Dzung,

Itā€™s pho-riday, pho-riday, getting Small-Special-Beef-Pho ($8.9) on pho-riday! And Crispy Skin Chicken with Egg Noodle Soup ($10.9). Lots of noodles and probably a whole chicken. Yum.

Unlike in Malaysia, where the only thing to ponder about the weather is whether it will rain or not, Melbourne springs more surprises than that. Despite entering Spring for a whole month, it has been chilly and warm weather is still a rarity. So much as i

Itā€™s Pho Dzung again! Not that I decided to go there, but it was actually a coincidence that my colleagueā€™s friend wanted to try this famous Vietnamese noodle shop. We had the Spring Rolls Vermicelli, Combination Noodle Soup and Vietnamese Prawn Rolls - everything were delicioux tonight! Everyone kept saying that their Richmond shop tastes thousands times better, now I really wanna go there to have a try!
