Throwback to pre-covid19 when dining out was still a norm - 📍Makan, one of my all time favourite asian fusion restaurants in the CBD. Asian fusion can typically be hit or miss in my humble opinion, but this place never disappoints!

Dishes:🍲🍟🍔
Nasi goreng (fried rice) 🍛| wok tossed eggplants 🍆 rendang braised beef brisket 🥘| grilled beef ribs 🥩| lamb shank 🍖

Value:💰💲
Nasi goreng is always a must order whenever I visit Makan 😍 my fav mains would be rendang braised beef brisket (it’s soo tender and bursting with flavours - portion is slightly small though) & lamb shank (generous portion). Eggplants are really good too and would be a good option for vegetarians. The grilled beef ribs were slightly dry, but still a pleasant dish.
Price is pretty reasonable for the quality of dishes, also a good place for big groups (so you could order lotsa dishes and try them all out - that’s what I usually do)😆🙊
Desserts wise, unfortunately it was a miss for me - personally did not enjoy the three that I’ve tried (do not recall the exact names too as I think it was a seasonal menu).

Will I go back and overall score: ❌⭕️💯
Yes - 9/10 but I would probably give the desserts a miss next time

Fantastic service with friendly and welcoming staff. The restaurant had a great vibe and fun for a night out. The food was all absolutely delicious, the highlights were the mee goreng (thin egg noodle style) and the beef rendang! Generous portions and full of flavour!

Makan offered a delicious dinner - I can’t comment on whether or not it was authentic though. The chicken satay skewers were yummy and I absolutely loved the crispy duck. The chicken ribs were very tasty too but the sauce was a little too wet.
The service was friendly and attentive, and was happy to help us in using up some prepaid cards. The restaurant was spacious and comfortable, and the plates were really aesthetic.

Happy belated Valentines Day! We were so excited to book at @makaninmelbourne , one of the hottest new restaurant openings in Melbourne in the last year!! From a raw kingfish with avocado mouse and spicy coriander sauce, to fried chicken ribs with the tastiest chilli sweet soy glaze (it was seriously amazing), grilled beef rib an incredible sambal sauce and the salmon grilled in a banana leaf, with jimbaran sauce, just to name some of the dishes we sampled. Accompanied by some incredible 70s/80s funk music, it ended up being an incredible night! We will definitely be back to try their famous Balinese pork hock, which was named one of the best dishes of 2019 by delicious!

Went there for lunch and had the set menu which is 49 for two people. You can select entree and main, then it comes with the rice and greens. The duck skin was crispy and the meat was tender and yummy. Must try dish.

Makan which means eat in Malay is a bit hidden especially on the weekend, as you cannot enter from Collins Street. I had to go through the back and found it down a lane way.

I visited recently with my sidekicks and ordered a range of dishes. Serving sizes were on the smaller side and we were prompted by the waiter to order a bit more.

Chicken satay - this was neatly arranged and was reasonably tasty.
Mie goreng - a fried egg came with the dry noodles. There was an effective use of various spices
Gado gado - this consisted of cabbage, tofu , snake bean and peanut sauce.
Cendol panna cotta - dish of the day! This was decorated with palm sugar, jelly, pomegranate, coconut foam, meringue and jackfruit jelly. Simply fantastic.

Service was very good. Our food arrived quickly. Overall the food was good in particular, the dessert. Looking forward to returning soon for more makan time!

Will come back for:
+ Nasi Goreng
+ Ubud Crispy duck

Was here celebrating the end of year with a bunch of work colleagues over lunch recently. This modern Indonesian eatery was bustling with activity and was catering to a fully booked lunch service. The food in general all carried authentic Indonesian flavors presented very nicely. I particularly loved the nasi goreng (well spiced and balanced and totally moorish with their sambal) and the crispy duck (super crispy and fragrant and great just with steam rice). Prices were reasonable for what you get and service was prompt and efficient despite the full service. Will definitely be back to try out more of the menu soon!

It was worth the effort to find this place, which was tricky as the entrance is in an alley off Little Collins. Friendly greeting on entry, we were quickly shown to our table. The sharing style menu had so many great options but dietary requirements meant we couldn't really share much. Helpful advice guided our choices and we settled back for a short wait. The lamb shank mild curry broth was phenomenally tasty. Clever use of spices, slow cooked meat, tomatoes and cabbage combined to create a flavour sensation. The broth was so good I left none. Just when I thought they couldn't top this, the cendol panacotta blew me away. So many ingredients went into this scrumptious dessert that was savoured during every mouthful. My friends also enjoyed their vegetarian dishes and the beautiful presentation from each dish. Modern, well-lit decor gave the space warmth and atmosphere. Attentive service throughout the visit completed our experience. Would love to try out some of the other offerings on the menu another day.

We really enjoyed our meal at Makan. We had the tasting menu, including dessert.
Every dish we tried was enjoyable, I’m only sorry we didn’t get to sample a nasi or mi goreng.
I did expect there to be some more spice to the food, but I understand this isn’t for everyone.
It’s difficult to choose favourites when I can’t fault a single dish, but my stand-outs were the pork belly skewers, the chicken ribs, and the black sticky-rice dessert.

💬 review: Housed in a sleek office building, makan is the place to go for an above average Asian lunch. The modern exterior makes this establishment ideal for client / tourist meetups. The wide array of Indonesian dishes made my stomach grumble as I looked at their lunch express menu. The dishes that caught my eye were gado gado and ubud crispy duck.

I eventually settled for mie and nasi goreng - just to gauge if they got their basics right. Portions were just right for me and everything was cooked well. The nasi goreng was just slightly better than mie goreng because it was less sweet and possessed sufficient “wok hei” or charcoal taste. The pickled carrots and crackers on both dishes were also addictive!

Prices were above average at $17 per dish, but I think that’s valid because of the location, ambience, fantastic attentive service and consistent taste. Will be back for a more elaborate meal.

📍Makan, Melbourne
Hidden on the ground floor of the corporate building on Collins Street! Heard a lot about Makan for serving auethentic Indonesian food so I was excited to finally visit. Chic interior design with dimmed lighting - it was a perfect first date spot :) We decided to grab Soft-Shell Crab Baos (2pcs, $18), Stuffed Calamari (MP ~ $30), BBQ Sticky Ribs ($32), and Black Sticky Rice ($14). Soft-shell crab bao was crispy with a light spicy kick from Padang tomato sauce. A perfect starter! BBQ Sticky ribs were glazed with sweet soy and came out with Sambal sauce. What can honestly go wrong with BBQ ribs? Finger lickin' good - absolutely juicy and easily fall right off the bones. Went wonderfully together with Jasmine rice we ordered. My personal favourite! Next, we moved on to Stuffed calamari - I think stuffed with fish paste. It was served on top of delicious bumbu rujak sauce which had fragrant aromatic spices to add more flavours :) We finished the night with Black Sticky Rice with salted coconut cream, sasame nougatine, and coconut & kaffir lime Ice cream. Not my personal favourite as I am not used to having rice as dessert but it was definitely nice and refreshing. Too bad I was too full by then.
Overall, it was a beautifully designed restaurant with amazing food. I feel like I missed some of the more popular options so I'd like to visit again in the near future to try them next time (esp. beef rendang)

The small plates were an absolute hit for us - pork belly sticks, chicken satay, fish cerviche, fried chicken wings. The barramundi in broth was excellent but the eggplant lacked flavour. The snake beans with shredded coconut was quite bland too. Thankfully we ended the night on a high - the black sticky rice was a yes from us!

My son suggested to try out this new place for dinner. Very simple restaurant name, Makan. We ordered a few varieties to share. Nice and well designed restaurant and staffs are very friendly and efficient. Foods served are generous portions and well presented. Overall no complaints on the dishes, it was good. The price also seems reasonable, roughly average of $45 per head. It was a good experience to dine here. Will recommend to those who wish to have a quiet and splendid evening to spend with loved ones. Good food and atmosphere. A moment to remember always.

Food was terrific especially the spicy wings and the rendang! I love the rendang but would love it more if it's a little moister. With the wings, I have no complaints and that's the best dish. The pork hock was well seasoned but I would have liked it a little more if there was more sambal matah. It's a huge hock with quite little sambal matah.

Our table waiter was really helpful to tell us all about the menu and the specials for the night. She was quick to solve our table issue as it was shaking as we eat. One of the waitresses (not our table waitress) was a little rude when we were paying but that's okay cause the food was good enough for us to disregard that. Overall a great evening!

My partner and I went for my birthday dinner. As this is our first time to visit the restaurant as well as my partner’s first proper Indonesian restaurant so I decided to go with the Tasting Menu instead for 2 people.

3 Starters:

Sate Lilit (Fish) which was good and brought back to my childhood.;

Soft Shell Crab Bun with Saus Padang which also good, a bit too spicy but again its Saus Padang so it has to be a lil bit spicy.

Grilled Corn that wasn’t my favourite as I am not a corn lover, unfortunately. Plus, I dont really find this starter special and ‘Indonesian’ enough?

I think it was 4 Starters but I cant recall the other one.

2 Main Courses :

Nasi Goreng Chicken. This is so far my best dish from them. Worth everything that you wanted. Price, taste, portion. I’ll be back for this one for sure.;

Last dishes for the main course was Deep fried Pork Knuckle with Balinese Sauce and Sambal Matah. Nothing will goes wrong for Pork Knuckle. Delicious!

We had to missed the dessert because we were full unfortunately but will be back for sure to try the other menu options.

It’s my first visit to Makan. I was a little apprehensive as I was not sure the food and flavours would be authentic. I was pleasantly surprised. The crispy soft shell crab in a bun was delicious. Bun was soft and fluffy and the soft shell crab provided a good crunch as you bit into the bun. The chilli sauce was sweet but it didn’t drenched the bun. The braised oxtail with green papaya had a sweetish dark soy based broth with fragrant aromatic spices. The meat on the oxtail was falling off the bone. Another great dish was the pork shank with crispy skin and meat falling off the bone. It was served with a delicious broth which added more flavours to the pork shank. But I absolutely loved the chilli onion Sambal/pickle condiment with the pork. We were happy that we were able to request our tofu and beans dish to be made more spicy. I would definitely return to try the other offerings on the menu. The service was not exceptional but cordial. it was hard to locate the entrance of the restaurant. During the evening the entrance is via Collins Way. A suggestion is to put a sign at the collins Street entrance to advise diners that entrance is via collins way,

A lovely hidden restaurant which can be entered from an office building on collins street. We had the banquet and were very satisfied even though it only included entrees and mains. The serving size of the dishes was generous and the flavours were distinctly indonesian to me, having travelled to Indonesia many times in the past. The kingfish sashimi, swordfish satay, grilled prawns, grilled pork ribs and beef rendang were definitely stand out dishes and were all perfectly spiced and delicious. My only suggestion would be to have more sambal and vegetables to accompany the mains. Overall, this place is truely a gem if you have a craving for indonesian food in a beautiful classy restaurant in Melbourne CBD.

We had lunch here last week with 2 kids under 2, and the staff were super lovely and accommodating. Between the 5 adults we ordered the chicken wings, crispy duck, oxtail stew, beef ribs and they were all really delicious. The highlight for me personally was the beef ribs. For dessert we shared the cendol pannacota and the special of the day, pineapple cookie (tasted like pineapple tart that you get for Lunar New Year).

It’s actually 3.5 rating. I am an Indonesian and a colleague took me here. I know it’s a fusion restaurant but i guess sometimes the Indonesian-ness is not apparent enough in the dishes. We had some appetizers, such as soft shell crab bao, sashimi crackers, and fish satay. Out of the three, the bao was the most memorable. The crab was crispy and the padang sauce is spicy and tasty! Might be a bit hot for some people though. Sashimi crackers have really nice sauce to go with it, and I don’t usually like sashimi but i enjoyed this dish. Lastly, the fish satay to me was a bit strange and I wouldn’t order it again (i dont think i ever seen fish satay in Indo itself?). For mains, we had oxtail stew, crispy duck, mie goreng, grilled fish and veggie stir fry. Oxtail stew was cooked really well and the sauce was really nice. Mie goreng was rather sweet but still nice. The stir fry was pretty good too. The crispy duck however, i feel lacking of flavour. We asked for a special chili paste and it was just how Indo people like it so yeah that was nice. For dessert we had black glutinous rice and a pineapple cake (apparently special for Valentines day). Whether i was just too full, but the desserts were ok but not mindblowing. So overall they do have some really yummy dishes and some are just ok. The place has fancy atmosphere to it but still youthful. Apparently if you go on the weekend, you have to enter via little collins street. Waiters are friendly and very attentive, they never fail to fill out water glasses throughout the night without being asked. Would like to try more dishes next time.

For so long I have been hoping that someone would fill Melbourne’s niche of a decent contemporary Indonesian restaurant and Makan is more than perfect for it. I love the minimal concept of the restaurant, as the food just speaks for itself. I tend to doubt the authenticity of the flavours when a new ‘modern and hip’ establishment pops up but today I was proven otherwise.

We chose to order off the Express Lunch menu as we were limited with our time. I ordered the Market fish (salmon) with balado chilli jam, white rice, bean shoot urap and boiled egg. My mum ordered the classic Nasi goreng, chicken, cabbage, Asian greens, fried egg and kerupuk (crackers).

It surprised me that the balado chilli jam was actually spicy! For me, it had the perfect amount of spicy and there was a subtle tangy after taste which was just beautiful. The salmon itself was cooked to perfection, moist, tender and slight crisp on the outside. The sides that came with the meal were fine but for me the winner was the chilli jam.

The flavours of the nasi goreng was perfect and that’s according to my born and bred Indonesian Mum. We were both raised on nasi goreng so naturally, we’re experts and we can confirm the nasi goreng was indeed delicious!

Staff were very friendly, service was great and we didn’t have to wait long for the food. The only thing I recommend is adding kerupuk (crackers) on the sides menu!

I can’t wait until round two, when I return for the share plates. To be continued..

Classy, affordable Indonesian food down a little quiet alleyway. However, you can also enter or leave via the building next door!

Ordered:
🍞 Stir-fried tofu (v): with mushrooms, green bean with green chilli sambal on rice, bean shoot urap ($16.00)
+ 🍚 sub to red rice ($1.00)

Review:
The Stir-fried tofu was so flavorful!! You get that punch of savoury soulful goodness, with a good amount of chilli spice that leaves that warm tingly feeling in your mouth when the dish is done. All without that peppery burn!

One of the best Indonesian places I've been so far with a classy interior to match. If you want to impress someone/go to somewhere elevated and be gentle to your wallet, Makan is a great choice.

I'm definitely coming back.

One thing to note is that the express lunch wasn't very express. It took a little while for the food to come - which meant I could only scoff down my food before I had to jet off to my next meeting.

I came here for dinner with my friends. We selected the tasting menu for $55pp. It came with 5 small and 3 larger dishes. All the meals came in sharable big plates. Some meals can be easily distributed with the number of people, but some are trickier to divide it ourselves (e.g. the white fish gohu).

These are the meals that we had:

1. White fish gohu, spicy coriander dressing, cucumber, avocado mousse, rice crackers – 17 GF:
Like a ceviche; fish was soft and tender; the taste was alright. My only disatisfaction is that it came with only a slice of small fish and it was quite tricky to divide it among ourselves. It would have been better if it had been pre-divided into the same number of people.

2. Fried chicken ribs, chilli & sweet soy glaze – 15:
Very flavourful, but I felt that the chicken contains more skin than meat.

3. Fish sate lilit, lemongrass, galangal, coriander, pickled daikon – 15 (3pcs) GF DF:
Good, but IMO it would have been better if it came with sambal on the side.

4. Grilled jumbo king prawns, spicy tomato relish, prawn salt – 18 (2pcs) DF:
Love the flavour, although it required some effort to separate the prawn meat from the shell.

5. Grilled corn cobs, kaffir lime, chilli salt – 12 (3pcs) GF DF VG:
Good old grilled corn cobs, hard to get wrong here.

6. Kangkung, shrimp paste sambal, roasted peanuts – 16 GF DF:
Lacking flavour; my least favourite out of all.

7. Beef brisket rendang, potatoes – 26 GF DF:
It didn't taste like an authentic rendang. For some reason it tasted cheesy, and not in a good way. This is not my favourite and I feel they can do better than this.

8. BBQ sticky ribs, sweet soy glaze, sambal (Beef – 29 Pork – 30) DF:
It tasted good, the meat separated very easily from the bone; although I think the sambal was more of sweet than spicy.

9. Jasmine rice:
They gave us very generous portion of rice and we could still ask for more rice if we wanted to. They gave us portion for 2 people but it was more than enough for 4 of us.

Generally the food was good, although I'm quite disappointed with the taste of the kangkung and rendang. The variety of the tasting menu and the portion are great. We didn't manage to finish all of them, but they allowed you to bring the leftovers home. Their service is awesome.

Makan is a new, modern eatery serving up Balinese style dishes to Melbourne. Opened by Tascia and Gracia Segar, two sisters who were the winners of MKR in 2016. We ordered the chicken satay, Nasi goreng, mee goreng, opor tempeh with mild coconut curry, the BBQ sticky ribs with pork, the Ubud style crispy duck, the Cendol panacotta and the Mocha cake.
The highlights and standouts were:
Chicken satay - these were tender, juicy and the sauce was really tasty
Nasi goreng - flavourful and we loved the smokiness in the rice from a really hot wok
Sticky ribs - finger lickin’ good and falling off the bone
The not so good / could be improved:
Ubud crispy duck - just a bit too dry
Mocha cake - again, the cake was a bit overcooked and dry
Overall, Makan has good vibes and the staff are super friendly. Location isn’t the greatest as it’s a bit hard to find but food was generally good and great value for the serving sizes. 3.6/5

We ordered from the express menu, the mi goreng, the market fish, and the black sticky rice dessert.

All dishes were packed full of flavour and delightful in presentation. The chilli jam on my fish brought me back to Bali.

The dessert is a must-try, striking punches of flavour, but not too sweet.

Makan was a new hyped Indonesian restaurant, with Tasia & Gracia, who won My Kitchen Rules 2016. The price was a bit pricy, so I had high expectation for this restaurant. The place had modern decor and suitable for large groups. They offer a great selection of Indonesian dishes.

Fried Chicken Ribs, Chilli & Sweet Soy Glaze
Price: $15
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝
The chicken was quite flavourful and crispy. However, the sweet soy glaze was too sweet for my liking. It tasted like Indonesian sweet soy sauce. It needed more depth and variety of flavour. Liked the crispiness, though.

Balinese Pork Shank, Sambal Matah
Price: $30
Taste: 🌝🌝
Was excited about this dish, since I loved sambal matah. The pork was way too salty. The sambal matah wasn’t so spicy. My least favourite dish.

Beef Brisket Rendang & Potatoes
Price: $26
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌜
The beef was tender, and the sauce was flavourful. It was definitely a next-level rendang dish. If you want an Indonesian taste, definitely get this one.

BBQ Sticky Pork Ribs
Price: $30
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌜
The meat was tender and easily came off of the bones. The sticky bbq sauce was a classic for pork ribs. This dish certainly didn’t disappoint.

Ubud Crispy Duck
Price: $33
Taste: 🌝🌝
This one was also not my favourite. The duck was again, too salty. It was the only flavour in that dish. The meat was tender and the skin was crispy, but it was lacking flavour other than salty.

Cendol Panna Cotta
Price: $13
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌝
Saw this interesting combination on the menu. The ice cream was really good, and complemented the panna cotta well. It might be too sweet for some people, but I personally liked it. It was the perfect end to the meal.

Makan served simple Indonesian dishes. I feel like it needs more variety of flavour. However, it was still a great place if you want a taste of Indonesian dishes. I personally think that it needs more variety of flavour in all of the dishes.

4.5 out of 5!!
We served by the best waitress in the world, Ainslie!! She makes our night!!
They have an indonesian authentic flavor. First of all, if you like nasi goreng, this is the place to eat!! The taste just too good!! It tastes like we’re home. The chicken satay and cendol pana cota is mouth watering as well. The portion is big too.
But, the only complain that i have is about their crispy duck and pork shank, both are a bit too salty. If they can make it slightly less salt, I’m gonna give 5 out of 5 😂😂. But overall is a pleasure to eat there. Will come back for their curry since I didn’t have it today.

Really good. Satisfying and hearty, amazing flavours. This is the hit the spot good you look for but rarely find. Better than chin chin and without the queues. Best dishes are the grilled chicken with sambal and the barrimundi broth. Best restaurant discovery in the past five years.

I never GIVE 5✨ rating to indonesian restaurant but this one is really deserve it!!! I love all of the menu i ordered. Lilit Skewers and Banana Creme Brulee are my favorites 😍😍😍 the risoles and fried rice were amazing too, it has that Indonesian taste but modern enough. I love it. The waitress was very friendly and kind, so me and my boyfriend were really happy eating here.

Being a big fan of MKR it was exciting to see Tasia & Gracia open their new restraunt.

What a delight to be greeted by Tasia who welcomed our party of 7 and ensured that we were well looked after.

We started off the the Soft-shell crab, Padang tomato sauce, steamed bun and the  Fried crepe roll, chicken filling, tangy peanut sauce, this was so fresh and delicious we ordered another serving 😋😋.

We ordered mains to share including the Nasi goreng, chicken, cabbage, Asian greens, crackers, fried egg,  Beef brisket rendang, potatoes these were ok.

Ubud crispy duck, fresh cabbage, cucumber,
basil, mixed sambal I felt was a little too overcooked and dry for me personally.

BBQ sticky ribs, sweet soy glaze, sambal Pork is so amazing my favourite meal of the evening. The meat was so tender. We also had the fish of the day which was freshly prepared and full of flavour.

Now the most amazing part of the evening was dessert....each and everyone were executed perfectly. Luckily our waitress did suggest we share as they were massive and so delicious 😍😍.

The Cendol panna cotta, jackfruit,
pandan tapioca pearls, palm sugar & coconut foam was the perfect balance of flavours.
The Black sticky rice, salted coconut cream, sesame nougatine, coconut & kaffir lime
ice cream had a delicious and the texture was spot on.
Banana brûlée, chocolate ice cream, cheddar crisp, condensed milk chantilly was a great sweet light dessert.
The Mocha cake was delicious and dense along with the avocado mousse, dark chocolate ganache but that Balinese coffee ice cream was amazzing.

Attentive service throughout the evening and to top it off we took a photo with Gracia ( as Tasia was busy working in the kitchen).

Overall it is a bit tricky to find the restraunt but follow the instructions I have posted in my pics!

I loved the flavours of all the dishes that I had ! I especially loved the beef sticky ribs ! Literally finger licking good and I loved the spicy sauces too 🙌🏼 desserts were delicious as well. The only disapointing thing was that we had to wait quite a while for the mains while everyone else seemed to already have those

My friend and I came here for some lunch. She had heard portion sizes might be on the small side but nothing to fear here. This restaurant oozes generosity in both the food and service.

We had a booking which had only just been received by them, we were warmly greeted by the waitress and she could not have been lovelier. In fact all the ladies serving our table were bubbly, helpful, and attentive. The space is a modern contemporary and located in an office building.

Then placemats double as the menu as the bright design on one side when flipped reveals all the dishes on offer. They also offer a Lunch Express menu which suited us today. We decided on the Mie Goreng, Chicken, Cabbage, Asian Greens, Crackers, Fried Egg as well as Beef Brisket Rendang On Rice, Bean Shoot Urap, Boiled Egg. They were both great portion sizes and both packed full of flavour. The were happy to bring us extra plates to share the meals. The mee goreng had tasty noodles combined with the other ingredients topped with an egg. The rendang is melt in the mouth and had a spicy kick that was lovely.

I was so excited to try Tasia and Gracia to open up their restaurant – Makan on Collins St. In the heart of the busy CBD, their are situated inside the building. I go to code black for coffee all the time, and there is Makan hidden in the corner. I can see why it’s a bit hard to find for those who don’t work or know the area. But I had it all sorted…

I booked this restaurant from website 1 week before. Upon my arrival, the staffs greeted me directly and take me to the designated table.

FOOD:
1. BBQ Sticky Ribs with sweet soy glaze and sambal beef
2. Pindang Barramundi, thai eggplant, aromatic sweet & sour broth
3. Nasi goreng,chicken, cabbage, asian greens,cracker & fried egg
4. Cendol Panacotta with jack fruit, pandan tapioca pearls, palm sugar & coconut foam

Overall, the food was really delicious!!! Its beyond my expectation. The ribs is spectacular! The meat cooked perfectly and seasoned well! The sambal was so good too! Its not spicy but addictive! The barramundi is soft and the skin is so crispy. The broth itslef was full of flavours and spices. The cendol pannacotta is exceptional too(the best version of modern cendol im a glass)!. The nasi goreng reminded me of the street food in indonesia that always open until midnight.

I’ve Been missing this indonesian food since ages. And this restaurant really hit the spot and fit my tastebuds well (all the food that i ordered was really closed to what i have in indonesia and even better!)

The staffs was great, friendly and attentive. Good food and great place to eat with your friends too.. will be be back again for sure!

One of the best Indonesian food I’ve had in Melbourne! Contemporary but still incorporating the traditional flavours of indonesian cuisine! So excited that they have finally opened! Especially with the 2016 MKR winners- Tasia and Gracia! Finally able to try their food in real life- Fried chicken with sweet sauce!! and also their pork ribs, beef ribs, Pork shank!! And for desserts definitely the cendol panacotta!! The list goes on! Cannot wait for my next trip there!!

I have been to this restaurant a few times since it has opened, both dine in and take away. I am happy to say that I have not been disappointed at all. The service here is great and the wait staff are so friendly. The dishes I have had here have all been flavourful and very tasty. My favourites would have to be the nasi goreng and the soft shell crab buns. So delicious!

One of the best indonesian cuisine in melbourne that u can find !! the service is really good , kudos to all the friendly staff! Ive visited for 2 times now

I did not give a perfect 5 star because the Nasi goreng(Fried rice) and Mi goreng (Fried Noodles) were quite salty, yes 2 times i went and i ate the same thing

But the satay and the pork with sambal matah was really delicious, highly recommended!

I really love the vibe of the restaurant as well, so modern and chill

Food taste 8/10
Food presentation 8/10
Service 11/10

Had a lovely dinner last night. The staff was great and the menu was approachable (I’d never had Indonesian Food before). Highly recommend the satay skewers (the sauce is amazing), the fish was fresh and tasty, and we finished off the meal with the black sticky rice and coconut cream...perfect amount of sweet and savoury.

Points for: beautifully executed modern hawker food

From the winners of My Kitchen Rules, Makan celebrates food from the region of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
A great way to sample the food is the express lunch menu.
* Beef Massaman - chunks of tender beef in a thick, rich, punchy dry curry made of dessicated coconut and spices. The flavour was lightly salty, mildly spicy but really velvety and really delicious.
* Pan fried fish with chilli jam - a bit of a smaller portion than I expected. The chilli jam is wonderful though, a mild sweetness like caramel and chilli undertones really gave the fish a lot of flavour. Bottle the chilli jam!
* Cendol Pana Cotta - loved this take on the classic cendol. You can taste the pandan in the pana cotta, which was soft but firm. The palm sugar (gula melaka) and coconut foam was more like a whipped cream and had dark caramel coconut. Finally the fragrant and sweet jackfruit slices gave another element of sweetness. Such a good combination!
The restaurant is quite new, and the design is modern.
Staff were very friendly and attentive. Well done!

Delicious!!! Intense flavours which have clearly been brewing for hours. Dishes were cooked beautifully and served with great hospitality in a trendy space. Loved it! Just make sure you access the place via Collins Gate (off little Collins) on the weekend when the 360 Collins entrance is shut!

This place is a hidden inside the 360 collins st building but when you walk inside it's nice interior. The food is good and delicious. Very tasty although a bit salty. Would need some greens or rice to go with it so make sure you order it to go with your food! Dont just rely on the nasi goreng. Not too sure on the black sticky rice dessert as it was massive after a big meal and quite filling. Cocktails are nice and strong. A good experience and worth trying out to go with a group of friends or even as a date spot. Service was impeccable and the staff are lovely and attentive.

I ate here few weeks ago with my friend for dinner. Ordered mie goreng, beef ribs, crispy duck, pindang, and octopus.

As an Indonesian native, I think all the foods that day has the similar taste with the ones in Indonesia. However, Indonesian food is known for their distinctive taste of herbs and spices, which Makan has to improve. The seasoning has to be stronger in order to "hit" that Indonesian standard.

Despite, the dessert was vanquisher. Nicely presented. Banana brûlée and cendol panna cotta successfully satisfied my sweet tooth.

The service was top notch. No words needed, 5 stars!

I have Already been to Makan twice not and cannot recommended it highly enough.

It is really good value for money for high quality Indonesian food. The chicken ribs and the nasi goreng were the standout dishes- the prawn crackers on the nasi goreng were delicious! There was a really good level of spice in all the dishes we tried. The service was extremely attentive and friendly, the whole team seemed very experienced and on the ball.

We will definitely be back soon, keep up the great work guys!

Very attentive and engaging staff with great senses of humour and loads of personality.

Lovely presentation of food. A little bit fancy, a lot creative, and packed with flavour. No favourite dishes here because everything was so tasty!

The only downside is that although the dishes are for sharing, they are a tad small.

One of the best restaurants in Melbourne. Just amazing. The recipe is balanced well for every dishes. Especially the dessert, I would recommend the black rice with ice cream if you don’t like sweet. A little pricey for the amount of food but with this taste and quality, I don’t complain. Plus, friendly service. Making this my fav place.

New restaurant opened by Tasia & Gracia - MKR winners 2016.

I have visited Makan twice now and have had a great experience on both occasions.

Ordered a few meals to try (on two separate occasions) including:

Entrée: Soft shell crab (honestly give these a go!), Fried chicken ribs chilli and sweet soy glaze (full of delicious flavour), Grilled jumbo prawns, Fried crepe roll. All were exceptional.

Sharing/main: Pindang barramundi (my absolute favourite broth dish, the flavour in this broth was soo good), Pork shank (huge serving, delicious flavours), Charred octopus, BBQ sticky ribs pork (excellent flavours, we just had to order another serve!)

Sweet: Black sticky rice, Banana brulee (a must try).

Food was delicious with amazing flavours. Service very friendly & welcoming from the moment we entered the restaurant. Staff member at the door even remembered my name when we re-visited the restaurant a week or so later. Reasonable prices, exceptional quality. A great restaurant, food and staff.

All I can say is I don’t need flying to Indonesia if I miss my hometown food!!!! The food are so YUMMY, my favourite is Jimbaran grill and soft shell crab bun. Must try! I came here with my friends and I only could take a picture of a few menus from what we ordered.

You know the food are Yummy when you can’t take a pic, just eat and eat!

Delicious, beautifully balanced and presented Indonesian food with a great range of options for vegetarians as well. I have been here on 2 occasions and the quality has been superb each time. They staff are fantastic at wine pairings and they have some fun and you cocktails as well. The desserts are also divine and left me wanting more. Particularly the black sticky rice! Sweet, creamy and a hint of salt to round it out. The Tasting menu (Makan time) for 65 including dessert definitely fills you up and is a good option to try lots of dishes - they are very accommodating for dietary restrictions if your group has any.

Great Indonesian food with delightful drinks. The staff was very helpful and are happy to recommended dishes if you're stuck with which dishes to order. The beef ribs, soft shell crab bao and skewers were especially yummy. My Indonesian friend tells me that the food is mostly authentic with the exception of the desserts we had which has a more modern take on it. The restaurant is also quite roomy and modern. The menu does not indicate spice warning though, so if you're like me and have minimum tolerance of spice, I advice that you let the waitress know. The toilets are also not located inside the restaurant but are within the building that the restaurant is attached to. All in all, I would definitely come back with friends/family.

Very flavoursome food with a fusion of flavours from South East Asia. Service was 10/10 and could not fault the food with every dish being very tasty without to much chilli. Only slight negative was the music was a bit loud for my liking as our table was right underneath a speaker. I did request a quiet table on the reservation. It did get a bit rowdy after 8 pm so maybe dine in early if you want to avoid the noise !

Tasty food, great presentation and lovely modern atmosphere. The lunch service was not too busy on a Tuesday, and it was a beautiful interior but the entrance is VERY hard to find, you either have to go through a lobby of another building or go down a shaddy alleyway around the back. But the food was worth the trek. There are plenty of flavour in all the dishes and the meat was cooked beautifully. Rice serving was generous and the food came quickly. The tofu was my favourite and beef Rendang was something I would come back for. Overall it is a very pleasant lunch and I think provides the perfect balance between price and quality.

Incredibly authentic indo food. We ordered the Nasi Goreng Bebek, Kangkung, Tahu Sambal Ijo and the Tempe - everything was outstanding and a reminder of my 14 years spent in Indonesia! For drinks we had wine and lycee martini - both excellent. We’ll be back to try the Bebek goreng and potentially just got for the feed me menu. All the staff were really nice and polite too. The prices were very reasonable also!! Terima Kasih

Fantastic! Service was between moderate to good. Foods omggg everything except 1 dish that doesn't suit my taste were really incredible. My fav will be the "Bebek Goreng" or fried duck. Unlike usual duck that dry, theirs is very soft and moist but crisp inside as well. Babi Guling is perfect match with the Sambal Matah. And the dessert just mindblowing. Cendol Panna Cotta. First thought will be just like normal panna cotta, but nope. Its very soft and you can actually taste that "cendol". Topped with palm sugar and jackfruit that will upgrade the taste and perfect sweetness level. We ordered fried noodles as well, that is damn good and different level. Unfortunately Pepes Tahu doesn't suit our taste, it's abit too sweet for us. What I like from them is that although they "fry" the food but it doesnt taste oily at all. You can also taste the "complicated" of every dish that has lots of ingredients inside. Point to the details👌 Really niceee!!

Bloody delicious. The only dish I wasn’t a fan of was the Gohu (raw kingfish) which needed a bit more seasoning. Everything else was sooooo yummers and that’s why it deserves five stars. The babi guling and chendol panna cotta is a must try. I went back for dinner (first time was lunch) and their menu had much more items, so highly suggest going for dinner.
