Throwback to pre-covid19 when dining out was still a norm - 📍Makan, one of my all time favourite asian fusion restaurants in the CBD. Asian fusion can typically be hit or miss in my humble opinion, but this place never disappoints!
Dishes:🍲🍟🍔
Nasi goreng (fried rice) 🍛| wok tossed eggplants 🍆 rendang braised beef brisket 🥘| grilled beef ribs 🥩| lamb shank 🍖
Value:💰💲
Nasi goreng is always a must order whenever I visit Makan 😍 my fav mains would be rendang braised beef brisket (it’s soo tender and bursting with flavours - portion is slightly small though) & lamb shank (generous portion). Eggplants are really good too and would be a good option for vegetarians. The grilled beef ribs were slightly dry, but still a pleasant dish.
Price is pretty reasonable for the quality of dishes, also a good place for big groups (so you could order lotsa dishes and try them all out - that’s what I usually do)😆🙊
Desserts wise, unfortunately it was a miss for me - personally did not enjoy the three that I’ve tried (do not recall the exact names too as I think it was a seasonal menu).
Will I go back and overall score: ❌⭕️💯
Yes - 9/10 but I would probably give the desserts a miss next time
Lots of dishes to choose from and can’t wait to come back to try more. We had pork belly satay skewers which were delish as we’re all the dishes. Very tasty food and generous servings.
Fantastic service with friendly and welcoming staff. The restaurant had a great vibe and fun for a night out. The food was all absolutely delicious, the highlights were the mee goreng (thin egg noodle style) and the beef rendang! Generous portions and full of flavour!
Makan offered a delicious dinner - I can’t comment on whether or not it was authentic though. The chicken satay skewers were yummy and I absolutely loved the crispy duck. The chicken ribs were very tasty too but the sauce was a little too wet.
The service was friendly and attentive, and was happy to help us in using up some prepaid cards. The restaurant was spacious and comfortable, and the plates were really aesthetic.
Finally, a place in Melbourne that does authentic nasi goreng! Absolutely enjoyed my lunch here. Can’t wait to go back and try everything from the menu.
Happy belated Valentines Day! We were so excited to book at @makaninmelbourne , one of the hottest new restaurant openings in Melbourne in the last year!! From a raw kingfish with avocado mouse and spicy coriander sauce, to fried chicken ribs with the tastiest chilli sweet soy glaze (it was seriously amazing), grilled beef rib an incredible sambal sauce and the salmon grilled in a banana leaf, with jimbaran sauce, just to name some of the dishes we sampled. Accompanied by some incredible 70s/80s funk music, it ended up being an incredible night! We will definitely be back to try their famous Balinese pork hock, which was named one of the best dishes of 2019 by delicious!
Went there for lunch and had the set menu which is 49 for two people. You can select entree and main, then it comes with the rice and greens. The duck skin was crispy and the meat was tender and yummy. Must try dish.
Makan which means eat in Malay is a bit hidden especially on the weekend, as you cannot enter from Collins Street. I had to go through the back and found it down a lane way.
I visited recently with my sidekicks and ordered a range of dishes. Serving sizes were on the smaller side and we were prompted by the waiter to order a bit more.
Chicken satay - this was neatly arranged and was reasonably tasty.
Mie goreng - a fried egg came with the dry noodles. There was an effective use of various spices
Gado gado - this consisted of cabbage, tofu , snake bean and peanut sauce.
Cendol panna cotta - dish of the day! This was decorated with palm sugar, jelly, pomegranate, coconut foam, meringue and jackfruit jelly. Simply fantastic.
Service was very good. Our food arrived quickly. Overall the food was good in particular, the dessert. Looking forward to returning soon for more makan time!
Will come back for:
+ Nasi Goreng
+ Ubud Crispy duck
Was here celebrating the end of year with a bunch of work colleagues over lunch recently. This modern Indonesian eatery was bustling with activity and was catering to a fully booked lunch service. The food in general all carried authentic Indonesian flavors presented very nicely. I particularly loved the nasi goreng (well spiced and balanced and totally moorish with their sambal) and the crispy duck (super crispy and fragrant and great just with steam rice). Prices were reasonable for what you get and service was prompt and efficient despite the full service. Will definitely be back to try out more of the menu soon!
It was worth the effort to find this place, which was tricky as the entrance is in an alley off Little Collins. Friendly greeting on entry, we were quickly shown to our table. The sharing style menu had so many great options but dietary requirements meant we couldn't really share much. Helpful advice guided our choices and we settled back for a short wait. The lamb shank mild curry broth was phenomenally tasty. Clever use of spices, slow cooked meat, tomatoes and cabbage combined to create a flavour sensation. The broth was so good I left none. Just when I thought they couldn't top this, the cendol panacotta blew me away. So many ingredients went into this scrumptious dessert that was savoured during every mouthful. My friends also enjoyed their vegetarian dishes and the beautiful presentation from each dish. Modern, well-lit decor gave the space warmth and atmosphere. Attentive service throughout the visit completed our experience. Would love to try out some of the other offerings on the menu another day.
Delicious, beautifully balanced and presented Indonesian food with a great range of options for vegetarians as well.
I have been here on 2 occasions and the quality has been superb each time.
They staff are fantastic at wine pairings and they have some fun and you cocktails as well.
The desserts are also divine and left me wanting more. Particularly the black sticky rice! Sweet, creamy and a hint of salt to round it out.
The Tasting menu (Makan time) for 65 including dessert definitely fills you up and is a good option to try lots of dishes - they are very accommodating for dietary restrictions if your group has any.
Great Indonesian food with delightful drinks. The staff was very helpful and are happy to recommended dishes if you're stuck with which dishes to order. The beef ribs, soft shell crab bao and skewers were especially yummy. My Indonesian friend tells me that the food is mostly authentic with the exception of the desserts we had which has a more modern take on it. The restaurant is also quite roomy and modern.
The menu does not indicate spice warning though, so if you're like me and have minimum tolerance of spice, I advice that you let the waitress know. The toilets are also not located inside the restaurant but are within the building that the restaurant is attached to.
All in all, I would definitely come back with friends/family.
Very flavoursome food with a fusion of flavours from South East Asia. Service was 10/10 and could not fault the food with every dish being very tasty without to much chilli. Only slight negative was the music was a bit loud for my liking as our table was right underneath a speaker. I did request a quiet table on the reservation. It did get a bit rowdy after 8 pm so maybe dine in early if you want to avoid the noise !
Tasty food, great presentation and lovely modern atmosphere.
The lunch service was not too busy on a Tuesday, and it was a beautiful interior but the entrance is VERY hard to find, you either have to go through a lobby of another building or go down a shaddy alleyway around the back. But the food was worth the trek.
There are plenty of flavour in all the dishes and the meat was cooked beautifully. Rice serving was generous and the food came quickly. The tofu was my favourite and beef
Rendang was something I would come back for.
Overall it is a very pleasant lunch and I think provides the perfect balance between price and quality.
Incredibly authentic indo food. We ordered the Nasi Goreng Bebek, Kangkung, Tahu Sambal Ijo and the Tempe - everything was outstanding and a reminder of my 14 years spent in Indonesia! For drinks we had wine and lycee martini - both excellent.
We’ll be back to try the Bebek goreng and potentially just got for the feed me menu.
All the staff were really nice and polite too. The prices were very reasonable also!!
Terima Kasih
Fantastic! Service was between moderate to good. Foods omggg everything except 1 dish that doesn't suit my taste were really incredible.
My fav will be the "Bebek Goreng" or fried duck. Unlike usual duck that dry, theirs is very soft and moist but crisp inside as well. Babi Guling is perfect match with the Sambal Matah. And the dessert just mindblowing. Cendol Panna Cotta. First thought will be just like normal panna cotta, but nope. Its very soft and you can actually taste that "cendol". Topped with palm sugar and jackfruit that will upgrade the taste and perfect sweetness level. We ordered fried noodles as well, that is damn good and different level.
Unfortunately Pepes Tahu doesn't suit our taste, it's abit too sweet for us.
What I like from them is that although they "fry" the food but it doesnt taste oily at all. You can also taste the "complicated" of every dish that has lots of ingredients inside. Point to the details👌
Really niceee!!
Bloody delicious. The only dish I wasn’t a fan of was the Gohu (raw kingfish) which needed a bit more seasoning. Everything else was sooooo yummers and that’s why it deserves five stars.
The babi guling and chendol panna cotta is a must try.
I went back for dinner (first time was lunch) and their menu had much more items, so highly suggest going for dinner.
Loved this place! Modern Indonesian food that warms your heart and soul. Great decor and super friendly staff. Highly recommend this place.
