Review Makan - Melbourne

Andy Wilk
Delicious, beautifully balanced and presented Indonesian food with a great range of options for vegetarians as well. I have been here on 2 occasions and the quality has been superb each time. They staff are fantastic at wine pairings and they have some fun and you cocktails as well. The desserts are also divine and left me wanting more. Particularly the black sticky rice! Sweet, creamy and a hint of salt to round it out. The Tasting menu (Makan time) for 65 including dessert definitely fills you up and is a good option to try lots of dishes - they are very accommodating for dietary restrictions if your group has any.

Great Indonesian food with delightful drinks. The staff was very helpful and are happy to recommended dishes if you're stuck with which dishes to order. The beef ribs, soft shell crab bao and skewers were especially yummy. My Indonesian friend tells me that the food is mostly authentic with the exception of the desserts we had which has a more modern take on it. The restaurant is also quite roomy and modern. The menu does not indicate spice warning though, so if you're like me and have minimum tolerance of spice, I advice that you let the waitress know. The toilets are also not located inside the restaurant but are within the building that the restaurant is attached to. All in all, I would definitely come back with friends/family.

Very flavoursome food with a fusion of flavours from South East Asia. Service was 10/10 and could not fault the food with every dish being very tasty without to much chilli. Only slight negative was the music was a bit loud for my liking as our table was right underneath a speaker. I did request a quiet table on the reservation. It did get a bit rowdy after 8 pm so maybe dine in early if you want to avoid the noise !

Tasty food, great presentation and lovely modern atmosphere. The lunch service was not too busy on a Tuesday, and it was a beautiful interior but the entrance is VERY hard to find, you either have to go through a lobby of another building or go down a shaddy alleyway around the back. But the food was worth the trek. There are plenty of flavour in all the dishes and the meat was cooked beautifully. Rice serving was generous and the food came quickly. The tofu was my favourite and beef Rendang was something I would come back for. Overall it is a very pleasant lunch and I think provides the perfect balance between price and quality.

Incredibly authentic indo food. We ordered the Nasi Goreng Bebek, Kangkung, Tahu Sambal Ijo and the Tempe - everything was outstanding and a reminder of my 14 years spent in Indonesia! For drinks we had wine and lycee martini - both excellent. We’ll be back to try the Bebek goreng and potentially just got for the feed me menu. All the staff were really nice and polite too. The prices were very reasonable also!! Terima Kasih

Fantastic! Service was between moderate to good. Foods omggg everything except 1 dish that doesn't suit my taste were really incredible. My fav will be the "Bebek Goreng" or fried duck. Unlike usual duck that dry, theirs is very soft and moist but crisp inside as well. Babi Guling is perfect match with the Sambal Matah. And the dessert just mindblowing. Cendol Panna Cotta. First thought will be just like normal panna cotta, but nope. Its very soft and you can actually taste that "cendol". Topped with palm sugar and jackfruit that will upgrade the taste and perfect sweetness level. We ordered fried noodles as well, that is damn good and different level. Unfortunately Pepes Tahu doesn't suit our taste, it's abit too sweet for us. What I like from them is that although they "fry" the food but it doesnt taste oily at all. You can also taste the "complicated" of every dish that has lots of ingredients inside. Point to the details👌 Really niceee!!

Bloody delicious. The only dish I wasn’t a fan of was the Gohu (raw kingfish) which needed a bit more seasoning. Everything else was sooooo yummers and that’s why it deserves five stars. The babi guling and chendol panna cotta is a must try. I went back for dinner (first time was lunch) and their menu had much more items, so highly suggest going for dinner.

Throwback to pre-covid19 when dining out was still a norm - 📍Makan, one of my all time favourite asian fusion restaurants in the CBD. Asian fusion can typically be hit or miss in my humble opinion, but this place never disappoints! <br/><br/>Dishes:🍲🍟🍔<br/>Nasi goreng (fried rice) 🍛| wok tossed eggplants 🍆 rendang braised beef brisket 🥘| grilled beef ribs 🥩| lamb shank 🍖<br/><br/>Value:💰💲<br/>Nasi goreng is always a must order whenever I visit Makan 😍 my fav mains would be rendang braised beef brisket (it’s soo tender and bursting with flavours - portion is slightly small though) & lamb shank (generous portion). Eggplants are really good too and would be a good option for vegetarians. The grilled beef ribs were slightly dry, but still a pleasant dish. <br/>Price is pretty reasonable for the quality of dishes, also a good place for big groups (so you could order lotsa dishes and try them all out - that’s what I usually do)😆🙊<br/>Desserts wise, unfortunately it was a miss for me - personally did not enjoy the three that I’ve tried (do not recall the exact names too as I think it was a seasonal menu).<br/><br/>Will I go back and overall score: ❌⭕️💯<br/>Yes - 9/10 but I would probably give the desserts a miss next time

Lots of dishes to choose from and can’t wait to come back to try more. We had pork belly satay skewers which were delish as we’re all the dishes. Very tasty food and generous servings.

Fantastic service with friendly and welcoming staff. The restaurant had a great vibe and fun for a night out. The food was all absolutely delicious, the highlights were the mee goreng (thin egg noodle style) and the beef rendang! Generous portions and full of flavour!
Daisy
Makan offered a delicious dinner - I can’t comment on whether or not it was authentic though. The chicken satay skewers were yummy and I absolutely loved the crispy duck. The chicken ribs were very tasty too but the sauce was a little too wet.<br/>The service was friendly and attentive, and was happy to help us in using up some prepaid cards. The restaurant was spacious and comfortable, and the plates were really aesthetic.

Finally, a place in Melbourne that does authentic nasi goreng! Absolutely enjoyed my lunch here. Can’t wait to go back and try everything from the menu.

Happy belated Valentines Day! We were so excited to book at @makaninmelbourne , one of the hottest new restaurant openings in Melbourne in the last year!! From a raw kingfish with avocado mouse and spicy coriander sauce, to fried chicken ribs with the tastiest chilli sweet soy glaze (it was seriously amazing), grilled beef rib an incredible sambal sauce and the salmon grilled in a banana leaf, with jimbaran sauce, just to name some of the dishes we sampled. Accompanied by some incredible 70s/80s funk music, it ended up being an incredible night! We will definitely be back to try their famous Balinese pork hock, which was named one of the best dishes of 2019 by delicious!

Went there for lunch and had the set menu which is 49 for two people. You can select entree and main, then it comes with the rice and greens. The duck skin was crispy and the meat was tender and yummy. Must try dish.
Sunny Days Melbourne
Makan which means eat in Malay is a bit hidden especially on the weekend, as you cannot enter from Collins Street. I had to go through the back and found it down a lane way.<br/><br/>I visited recently with my sidekicks and ordered a range of dishes. Serving sizes were on the smaller side and we were prompted by the waiter to order a bit more. <br/><br/>Chicken satay - this was neatly arranged and was reasonably tasty. <br/>Mie goreng - a fried egg came with the dry noodles. There was an effective use of various spices <br/>Gado gado - this consisted of cabbage, tofu , snake bean and peanut sauce.<br/>Cendol panna cotta - dish of the day! This was decorated with palm sugar, jelly, pomegranate, coconut foam, meringue and jackfruit jelly. Simply fantastic. <br/><br/>Service was very good. Our food arrived quickly. Overall the food was good in particular, the dessert. Looking forward to returning soon for more makan time!
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:<br/>+ Nasi Goreng<br/>+ Ubud Crispy duck<br/><br/>Was here celebrating the end of year with a bunch of work colleagues over lunch recently. This modern Indonesian eatery was bustling with activity and was catering to a fully booked lunch service. The food in general all carried authentic Indonesian flavors presented very nicely. I particularly loved the nasi goreng (well spiced and balanced and totally moorish with their sambal) and the crispy duck (super crispy and fragrant and great just with steam rice). Prices were reasonable for what you get and service was prompt and efficient despite the full service. Will definitely be back to try out more of the menu soon!

It was worth the effort to find this place, which was tricky as the entrance is in an alley off Little Collins. Friendly greeting on entry, we were quickly shown to our table. The sharing style menu had so many great options but dietary requirements meant we couldn't really share much. Helpful advice guided our choices and we settled back for a short wait. The lamb shank mild curry broth was phenomenally tasty. Clever use of spices, slow cooked meat, tomatoes and cabbage combined to create a flavour sensation. The broth was so good I left none. Just when I thought they couldn't top this, the cendol panacotta blew me away. So many ingredients went into this scrumptious dessert that was savoured during every mouthful. My friends also enjoyed their vegetarian dishes and the beautiful presentation from each dish. Modern, well-lit decor gave the space warmth and atmosphere. Attentive service throughout the visit completed our experience. Would love to try out some of the other offerings on the menu another day.
Chips Before Dips
We really enjoyed our meal at Makan. We had the tasting menu, including dessert. <br/>Every dish we tried was enjoyable, I’m only sorry we didn’t get to sample a nasi or mi goreng.<br/>I did expect there to be some more spice to the food, but I understand this isn’t for everyone. <br/>It’s difficult to choose favourites when I can’t fault a single dish, but my stand-outs were the pork belly skewers, the chicken ribs, and the black sticky-rice dessert.
Melody Bong
Everything we had were amazing, soft shell crabs, satay, beef ribs, jimbaran fish, pork bone and their sauce! Love love love!!!

Overall score: 21/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>in 5 words: classy Indonesian option in cbd<br/>*<br/>💬 review: Housed in a sleek office building, makan is the place to go for an above average Asian lunch. The modern exterior makes this establishment ideal for client / tourist meetups. The wide array of Indonesian dishes made my stomach grumble as I looked at their lunch express menu. The dishes that caught my eye were gado gado and ubud crispy duck. <br/><br/>I eventually settled for mie and nasi goreng - just to gauge if they got their basics right. Portions were just right for me and everything was cooked well. The nasi goreng was just slightly better than mie goreng because it was less sweet and possessed sufficient “wok hei” or charcoal taste. The pickled carrots and crackers on both dishes were also addictive! <br/><br/>Prices were above average at $17 per dish, but I think that’s valid because of the location, ambience, fantastic attentive service and consistent taste. Will be back for a more elaborate meal. <br/>*<br/>Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>Price: ⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

📍Makan, Melbourne<br/>Hidden on the ground floor of the corporate building on Collins Street! Heard a lot about Makan for serving auethentic Indonesian food so I was excited to finally visit. Chic interior design with dimmed lighting - it was a perfect first date spot :) We decided to grab Soft-Shell Crab Baos (2pcs, $18), Stuffed Calamari (MP ~ $30), BBQ Sticky Ribs ($32), and Black Sticky Rice ($14). Soft-shell crab bao was crispy with a light spicy kick from Padang tomato sauce. A perfect starter! BBQ Sticky ribs were glazed with sweet soy and came out with Sambal sauce. What can honestly go wrong with BBQ ribs? Finger lickin' good - absolutely juicy and easily fall right off the bones. Went wonderfully together with Jasmine rice we ordered. My personal favourite! Next, we moved on to Stuffed calamari - I think stuffed with fish paste. It was served on top of delicious bumbu rujak sauce which had fragrant aromatic spices to add more flavours :) We finished the night with Black Sticky Rice with salted coconut cream, sasame nougatine, and coconut & kaffir lime Ice cream. Not my personal favourite as I am not used to having rice as dessert but it was definitely nice and refreshing. Too bad I was too full by then.<br/>Overall, it was a beautifully designed restaurant with amazing food. I feel like I missed some of the more popular options so I'd like to visit again in the near future to try them next time (esp. beef rendang)<br/><br/>@melbfoodie_mark<br/>-<br/>#melbfoodiemark #Makan #indonesianfood #melbourneindonesianfood #melbournebrunch #melbournekoreanfood #melbournecafe #melbournefood #melbournerestaurant #melbourneeats #melbournelunch #melbournefoods #melbournefoodie

The small plates were an absolute hit for us - pork belly sticks, chicken satay, fish cerviche, fried chicken wings. The barramundi in broth was excellent but the eggplant lacked flavour. The snake beans with shredded coconut was quite bland too. Thankfully we ended the night on a high - the black sticky rice was a yes from us!

Really friendly staff and delicious food. Highly recommend to try out the tasting menu for your first. You won’t regret it.

My son suggested to try out this new place for dinner. Very simple restaurant name, Makan. We ordered a few varieties to share. Nice and well designed restaurant and staffs are very friendly and efficient. Foods served are generous portions and well presented. Overall no complaints on the dishes, it was good. The price also seems reasonable, roughly average of $45 per head. It was a good experience to dine here. Will recommend to those who wish to have a quiet and splendid evening to spend with loved ones. Good food and atmosphere. A moment to remember always.

Frankly the flavours are so toned down that it feels like one of those asian places made for the western palate. More and more aussies now are quite opened to trying new things. The food is missing oomph!
Yvonne97chuyu
First time trying out a lamb dish and it was surprisingly good. My favourite dish would be the Nasi Goreng. And not to forget, service was amazing. Friendly and helpful staffs 🤗🤗

Authentic Indonesian cuisine. We ordered slow cooked lamb shank, pork rib , ubud crispy duck and nasi goreng. The food was delicious. However , the duck is a bit dry. The cendol panda and black sticky rice dessert were not too sweet and taste just right.
JKGasMan
Ordered the Gado Gado and Chicken Sate. Gado Gado sauce was good, but ingredients could have been more bite-sized. Lunch service was quietly efficient. Lovely ambience for a lunch time meeting.

2 words: Tasting Menu!!<br/><br/>We had at least 8 different dishes to try.. the portions sizes were just right and enough to share among 4.<br/><br/>Small place with good ambience, drinks and polite staff.

Walked into Makan from a blustery cold autumn day to a warm and delicious Indonesian surprise. <br/><br/>We had the satay, sambal fish, beef rendang, and mi goreng, which were all delicious! :’) Topped it off with the glutinous rice dessert and was perfection! <br/><br/>Love it, can’t wait to come back!
Eatwithbonny
Great place to grab nice and quick lunch. Ordered nasi goreng and beef rendang. Portion is good for the value. Beef rendang was remarkably soft and tasty. Nasi goreng was great as well. <br/><br/>Definitely will be back to try other dishes!

I brought my family here about 6 months ago ( I forgot to write this review before but only remember to do so now). Food was subpar. One of the dishes we ordered was the Kangkung Belacan, to my surprise when I lifted a piece of kangkung it was filled with BLACK ANTS. When I told the waitress about this, she took it very lightly and showed no interest. All she did was return the dish to the kitchen for it to be re-cooked. I left this restaurant feeling appalled and don’t think I’ll be returning here in the near future.

We went to Makan for my brothers birthday and had a fabulous time. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. The beef rendang was the best! The deserts were lovely too. Really good value and we can't wait to go back again
Latitudes
Beautiful beef rendang but the other dishes we tried were very ordinary - especially the Nasi goreng. Wait staff varied from really helpful to officious. Nice enough meal but in Melbourne that is not quite enough fir me to return.

I have dined here twice. The first with just a friend, the second time with a party of 10. Both experiences were great with delicious food and amazing staff. A shout out to one of their servers, Luke. Very experienced and goes the extra mile to make you feel welcomed at the restaurant!

Amazing flavours! By far one of the most underrated restaurants in Melbourne. Great service and vibe. Thank you for the memorable meal! We will be back again!

The first few time I was here, food was amazing! But for the few visits I’ve found the taste not as great as it used to be. Not consistent. However, I love the pork shanks, prawns, fried rice, and the desserts. Good value of money for the portions.
Aaron Chin
Food was terrific especially the spicy wings and the rendang! I love the rendang but would love it more if it's a little moister. With the wings, I have no complaints and that's the best dish. The pork hock was well seasoned but I would have liked it a little more if there was more sambal matah. It's a huge hock with quite little sambal matah. <br/><br/>Our table waiter was really helpful to tell us all about the menu and the specials for the night. She was quick to solve our table issue as it was shaking as we eat. One of the waitresses (not our table waitress) was a little rude when we were paying but that's okay cause the food was good enough for us to disregard that. Overall a great evening!
Claudia Yofa
Food was great and the service was awesome. We ordered the ubud crispy duck, kangkung, grilled jimbaran fish, bbq sticky ribs, banana brûlée, and cendol panna cotta. Tastes similar to authentic Indonesian food, but could be more flavourful. The cendol panna cotta was the best! Would definitely come back for the panna cotta 💕
Got_2_lunch
Popped by for a team lunch and had a great experience! Food was delish, service was fast and restaurant was beautiful. I opted for the Brisket randang and 10/10 would recommend! It was sooo rich and tasty. We will definitely be back!

My partner and I went for my birthday dinner. As this is our first time to visit the restaurant as well as my partner’s first proper Indonesian restaurant so I decided to go with the Tasting Menu instead for 2 people.<br/><br/>3 Starters: <br/><br/>Sate Lilit (Fish) which was good and brought back to my childhood.;<br/><br/>Soft Shell Crab Bun with Saus Padang which also good, a bit too spicy but again its Saus Padang so it has to be a lil bit spicy. <br/><br/>Grilled Corn that wasn’t my favourite as I am not a corn lover, unfortunately. Plus, I dont really find this starter special and ‘Indonesian’ enough?<br/><br/>I think it was 4 Starters but I cant recall the other one.<br/><br/><br/>2 Main Courses : <br/><br/>Nasi Goreng Chicken. This is so far my best dish from them. Worth everything that you wanted. Price, taste, portion. I’ll be back for this one for sure.;<br/><br/>Last dishes for the main course was Deep fried Pork Knuckle with Balinese Sauce and Sambal Matah. Nothing will goes wrong for Pork Knuckle. Delicious!<br/><br/>We had to missed the dessert because we were full unfortunately but will be back for sure to try the other menu options.
AC
It’s my first visit to Makan. I was a little apprehensive as I was not sure the food and flavours would be authentic. I was pleasantly surprised. The crispy soft shell crab in a bun was delicious. Bun was soft and fluffy and the soft shell crab provided a good crunch as you bit into the bun. The chilli sauce was sweet but it didn’t drenched the bun. The braised oxtail with green papaya had a sweetish dark soy based broth with fragrant aromatic spices. The meat on the oxtail was falling off the bone. Another great dish was the pork shank with crispy skin and meat falling off the bone. It was served with a delicious broth which added more flavours to the pork shank. But I absolutely loved the chilli onion Sambal/pickle condiment with the pork. We were happy that we were able to request our tofu and beans dish to be made more spicy. I would definitely return to try the other offerings on the menu. The service was not exceptional but cordial. it was hard to locate the entrance of the restaurant. During the evening the entrance is via Collins Way. A suggestion is to put a sign at the collins Street entrance to advise diners that entrance is via collins way,
Food For Thought
A lovely hidden restaurant which can be entered from an office building on collins street. We had the banquet and were very satisfied even though it only included entrees and mains. The serving size of the dishes was generous and the flavours were distinctly indonesian to me, having travelled to Indonesia many times in the past. The kingfish sashimi, swordfish satay, grilled prawns, grilled pork ribs and beef rendang were definitely stand out dishes and were all perfectly spiced and delicious. My only suggestion would be to have more sambal and vegetables to accompany the mains. Overall, this place is truely a gem if you have a craving for indonesian food in a beautiful classy restaurant in Melbourne CBD.

Indo fusion!!! Very interesting the flavours and textures the team were able to create. Big fan of the SSC baos and the pork was soo tender and juicy. Will def come back

I tried this restaurant soon after it opened. It was good than and it is still very good. <br/><br/>The staff was attentive but not obtrusive.<br/><br/>Kangkung, shrimp paste sambal, roasted peanuts was crisp and the taste of Indonesia come thru without been overpowering.<br/><br/>Definitely would be paying another visit to Makan in the future. I would recommend to anyone looking for a taste of Indonesia in the middle of Melbourne.

We had lunch here last week with 2 kids under 2, and the staff were super lovely and accommodating. Between the 5 adults we ordered the chicken wings, crispy duck, oxtail stew, beef ribs and they were all really delicious. The highlight for me personally was the beef ribs. For dessert we shared the cendol pannacota and the special of the day, pineapple cookie (tasted like pineapple tart that you get for Lunar New Year).
Choc Pudding
It’s actually 3.5 rating. I am an Indonesian and a colleague took me here. I know it’s a fusion restaurant but i guess sometimes the Indonesian-ness is not apparent enough in the dishes. We had some appetizers, such as soft shell crab bao, sashimi crackers, and fish satay. Out of the three, the bao was the most memorable. The crab was crispy and the padang sauce is spicy and tasty! Might be a bit hot for some people though. Sashimi crackers have really nice sauce to go with it, and I don’t usually like sashimi but i enjoyed this dish. Lastly, the fish satay to me was a bit strange and I wouldn’t order it again (i dont think i ever seen fish satay in Indo itself?). For mains, we had oxtail stew, crispy duck, mie goreng, grilled fish and veggie stir fry. Oxtail stew was cooked really well and the sauce was really nice. Mie goreng was rather sweet but still nice. The stir fry was pretty good too. The crispy duck however, i feel lacking of flavour. We asked for a special chili paste and it was just how Indo people like it so yeah that was nice. For dessert we had black glutinous rice and a pineapple cake (apparently special for Valentines day). Whether i was just too full, but the desserts were ok but not mindblowing. So overall they do have some really yummy dishes and some are just ok. The place has fancy atmosphere to it but still youthful. Apparently if you go on the weekend, you have to enter via little collins street. Waiters are friendly and very attentive, they never fail to fill out water glasses throughout the night without being asked. Would like to try more dishes next time.

For so long I have been hoping that someone would fill Melbourne’s niche of a decent contemporary Indonesian restaurant and Makan is more than perfect for it. I love the minimal concept of the restaurant, as the food just speaks for itself. I tend to doubt the authenticity of the flavours when a new ‘modern and hip’ establishment pops up but today I was proven otherwise. <br/><br/>We chose to order off the Express Lunch menu as we were limited with our time. I ordered the Market fish (salmon) with balado chilli jam, white rice, bean shoot urap and boiled egg. My mum ordered the classic Nasi goreng, chicken, cabbage, Asian greens, fried egg and kerupuk (crackers). <br/><br/>It surprised me that the balado chilli jam was actually spicy! For me, it had the perfect amount of spicy and there was a subtle tangy after taste which was just beautiful. The salmon itself was cooked to perfection, moist, tender and slight crisp on the outside. The sides that came with the meal were fine but for me the winner was the chilli jam.<br/><br/>The flavours of the nasi goreng was perfect and that’s according to my born and bred Indonesian Mum. We were both raised on nasi goreng so naturally, we’re experts and we can confirm the nasi goreng was indeed delicious!<br/><br/>Staff were very friendly, service was great and we didn’t have to wait long for the food. The only thing I recommend is adding kerupuk (crackers) on the sides menu! <br/><br/>I can’t wait until round two, when I return for the share plates. To be continued..
Crabapples For Lunch
This is more of a 3.5 stars. I got their pan-fried market fish (barramundi was the fish of the day) with balado chilli jam on rice, bean shoot urap and boiled egg (one of their lunch specials) to takeaway. The ambience of this modern Indonesian restaurant has a contemporary, classy feel, and the waitress/manager that attended to me was friendly yet professional (I could tell she was experienced and well trained given they cater to a lot of corporate clients).<br/><br/>The food was quite spicy and the taste was quite authentic. I could tell the different elements were carefully prepared - the egg for example was just under hard boiled and the rice was fluffy. However, the main issue with the meal is there was quite little for what we paid. The entire dish maaay qualify as filling if you finished all the rice, but the piece of fish they gave was quite small, there weren't much vegetables either and they only gave half an egg. My wife finished all the food with half the amount of rice still left. I might pay $10 for it (if I really wanted authentic Indonesian food) but for $17 I would have liked quite a lot more.<br/><br/>I can't believe I'm saying this but Papparich a few steps away (who are famous for their ever increasing prices and trying to extract the last dollar out of their customers) is probably better value for money than Makan, even though the food there is technically Malaysian (there are some similar dishes). I can see some people prefering to dine here for corporate meetings with clients though, as the ambience is more suited to these events and the value of the meal is secondary. Because of the good service and ambience, I gave this place half a star more than I usually would.
Jasmine
Classy, affordable Indonesian food down a little quiet alleyway. However, you can also enter or leave via the building next door!<br/><br/>Ordered:<br/>🍞 Stir-fried tofu (v): with mushrooms, green bean with green chilli sambal on rice, bean shoot urap ($16.00)<br/>+ 🍚 sub to red rice ($1.00)<br/><br/>Review:<br/>The Stir-fried tofu was so flavorful!! You get that punch of savoury soulful goodness, with a good amount of chilli spice that leaves that warm tingly feeling in your mouth when the dish is done. All without that peppery burn!<br/><br/>One of the best Indonesian places I've been so far with a classy interior to match. If you want to impress someone/go to somewhere elevated and be gentle to your wallet, Makan is a great choice.<br/><br/>I'm definitely coming back.<br/><br/>One thing to note is that the express lunch wasn't very express. It took a little while for the food to come - which meant I could only scoff down my food before I had to jet off to my next meeting.
Germaine Leong
Outstanding customer service and flavourful dishes. Favourite would have to be the eggplant and snapper. Really next level Indonesian cuisine!

I don’t know how many people know about this place as it’s located in an alley way however it’s definitely feels like an very underrated place! <br/>Modern casual venue with friendly and attentive service. We came here with another couple that could only eat seafood so didn’t get to try some of the non seafood based dishes but I’ll definitely be back to give them a go.<br/>The soft shell crab bun was quite good however the king prawns , the kingfish and the barramundi were amazing! <br/>Definitely try the cocktails as the Whiskey Sour was nice and had some very interesting garnishes. <br/>Definitely great bang for buck place as the dishes don’t cost a lot compared to the quality and portions you receive. <br/>

LOVE!!<br/>Been twice and has not let me down!<br/>Amazing customer service, food is unreal and fresh - you can tell it's made with love.<br/>Desserts are so so yummy, we tried all of them ;)

I came here for dinner with my friends. We selected the tasting menu for $55pp. It came with 5 small and 3 larger dishes. All the meals came in sharable big plates. Some meals can be easily distributed with the number of people, but some are trickier to divide it ourselves (e.g. the white fish gohu).<br/><br/>These are the meals that we had:<br/><br/>1. White fish gohu, spicy coriander dressing, cucumber, avocado mousse, rice crackers – 17 GF:<br/>Like a ceviche; fish was soft and tender; the taste was alright. My only disatisfaction is that it came with only a slice of small fish and it was quite tricky to divide it among ourselves. It would have been better if it had been pre-divided into the same number of people.<br/><br/>2. Fried chicken ribs, chilli & sweet soy glaze – 15:<br/>Very flavourful, but I felt that the chicken contains more skin than meat.<br/><br/>3. Fish sate lilit, lemongrass, galangal, coriander, pickled daikon – 15 (3pcs) GF DF:<br/>Good, but IMO it would have been better if it came with sambal on the side.<br/><br/>4. Grilled jumbo king prawns, spicy tomato relish, prawn salt – 18 (2pcs) DF:<br/>Love the flavour, although it required some effort to separate the prawn meat from the shell.<br/><br/>5. Grilled corn cobs, kaffir lime, chilli salt – 12 (3pcs) GF DF VG:<br/>Good old grilled corn cobs, hard to get wrong here.<br/><br/>6. Kangkung, shrimp paste sambal, roasted peanuts – 16 GF DF:<br/>Lacking flavour; my least favourite out of all.<br/><br/>7. Beef brisket rendang, potatoes – 26 GF DF:<br/>It didn't taste like an authentic rendang. For some reason it tasted cheesy, and not in a good way. This is not my favourite and I feel they can do better than this.<br/><br/>8. BBQ sticky ribs, sweet soy glaze, sambal (Beef – 29 Pork – 30) DF:<br/>It tasted good, the meat separated very easily from the bone; although I think the sambal was more of sweet than spicy.<br/><br/>9. Jasmine rice:<br/>They gave us very generous portion of rice and we could still ask for more rice if we wanted to. They gave us portion for 2 people but it was more than enough for 4 of us.<br/><br/>Generally the food was good, although I'm quite disappointed with the taste of the kangkung and rendang. The variety of the tasting menu and the portion are great. We didn't manage to finish all of them, but they allowed you to bring the leftovers home. Their service is awesome.<br/>

Makan is a new, modern eatery serving up Balinese style dishes to Melbourne. Opened by Tascia and Gracia Segar, two sisters who were the winners of MKR in 2016. We ordered the chicken satay, Nasi goreng, mee goreng, opor tempeh with mild coconut curry, the BBQ sticky ribs with pork, the Ubud style crispy duck, the Cendol panacotta and the Mocha cake.<br/>The highlights and standouts were: <br/>Chicken satay - these were tender, juicy and the sauce was really tasty<br/>Nasi goreng - flavourful and we loved the smokiness in the rice from a really hot wok<br/>Sticky ribs - finger lickin’ good and falling off the bone<br/>The not so good / could be improved:<br/>Ubud crispy duck - just a bit too dry<br/>Mocha cake - again, the cake was a bit overcooked and dry<br/>Overall, Makan has good vibes and the staff are super friendly. Location isn’t the greatest as it’s a bit hard to find but food was generally good and great value for the serving sizes. 3.6/5<br/><br/>

Makan is an Indonesian restaurant opened by MKR2016 winners. I must say that the sisters definitely bring in some impactful flavours to the table. My favourite so far are the fried chicken ribs for entree and Jimbaran fish for main. Please ask the price before ordering as it may varies from time to time. I'm pleased with the service and food and will come back to try their dessert. N.B. lunch express menu is only available on weekdays.

Second time lucky trying to secure a table at this restaurant. The winner of MKR a couple of years back. Indonesian food turns fine dining. The food is delicious. The pork ribs just fell off the bone. <br/>Dessert is very yummy too we had the coconut Panna cotta. Slightly on the Federer side compares to most Indonesian restaurant. But worth a try.

Restaurant has a slick modern design but lacks a bit of atmosphere. Staff were super friendly and attentive. Menu was interesting. Between two we shared the king prawns, the crepe roll, the beef short rib and the stir fried greens with shrimp paste. I was a bit disappointed with the prawns and the short rib. The prawns were quite difficult to eat and didn’t have much meat on them. And the short rib probably needed to be slow cooked a little bit longer in order to render the fact and make the meat really tender. I absolutely adored the stir fried greens though. So jam packed with flavour.

Great flavours backed up by attentive and friendly staff. Came here for a birthday celebration and thoroughly enjoyed the dishes. Modern Indonesian fare which show a great appreciation of the spices and flavours representative of this wonderful cuisine.<br/><br/>A few dishes had run out, so we're planning to go again!<br/><br/>

Good ambience a positive , great staff another great thing, quite location another great thing. <br/><br/>Food - Taste was ok, Not so great. <br/>Food quantity - Well short. I could have eaten 3 of what I ordered, I am still a lean guy :)<br/><br/>Beer - Far too expensive to the standard of  Melbourne.

Best Indo in town!!!By far!!!<br/>Dont miss the pork shank, the king prawns and the amazing chicken satay!<br/>Tasia and Gracia definitely delivered!
Good Food, Good Mood
Wow! Just wow. Always walk past this hidden gem while getting lunch or coffee (I am a meerkat when it comes to neon lights) but finally visited last Friday. Would highly recommend booking, the place was full house within 15 minutes. <br/><br/>We ordered from the express menu, the mi goreng, the market fish, and the black sticky rice dessert. <br/><br/>All dishes were packed full of flavour and delightful in presentation. The chilli jam on my fish brought me back to Bali. <br/><br/>The dessert is a must-try, striking punches of flavour, but not too sweet.<br/><br/>Highly recommend this restaurant! Well done MKR gals 👍🏼👍🏼<br/>

Came here during a weekday for lunch so we choose our meal from the lunch express menu.. I had the fried rice (you have a choice of either regular or spicy) & my friend had pan fried fish on chili.. for the fried rice, it was full of flavour but it felt too salty for me.. the prawn cracker looked beautiful on the side but quite disappointing that it was mostly not fried enough which made it hard to bite into.. for dessert we had cendol panna cotta & the banana brûlée.. the panna cotta set beautifully in a glass and taste ok but not too impressed.. I preferred my friend’s dessert- banana brûlée which the staff claimed that it was her favourite in the restaurant.. the banana burned nicely & there is some cheese crisp on the cream which I loved it..

Makan was a new hyped Indonesian restaurant, with Tasia & Gracia, who won My Kitchen Rules 2016. The price was a bit pricy, so I had high expectation for this restaurant. The place had modern decor and suitable for large groups. They offer a great selection of Indonesian dishes.<br/><br/>Fried Chicken Ribs, Chilli & Sweet Soy Glaze<br/>Price: $15<br/>Taste: 🌝🌝🌝<br/>The chicken was quite flavourful and crispy. However, the sweet soy glaze was too sweet for my liking. It tasted like Indonesian sweet soy sauce. It needed more depth and variety of flavour. Liked the crispiness, though.<br/><br/>Balinese Pork Shank, Sambal Matah<br/>Price: $30<br/>Taste: 🌝🌝<br/>Was excited about this dish, since I loved sambal matah. The pork was way too salty. The sambal matah wasn’t so spicy. My least favourite dish.<br/><br/>Beef Brisket Rendang & Potatoes<br/>Price: $26<br/>Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌜<br/>The beef was tender, and the sauce was flavourful. It was definitely a next-level rendang dish. If you want an Indonesian taste, definitely get this one. <br/><br/>BBQ Sticky Pork Ribs<br/>Price: $30<br/>Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌜<br/>The meat was tender and easily came off of the bones. The sticky bbq sauce was a classic for pork ribs. This dish certainly didn’t disappoint. <br/><br/>Ubud Crispy Duck<br/>Price: $33<br/>Taste: 🌝🌝<br/>This one was also not my favourite. The duck was again, too salty. It was the only flavour in that dish. The meat was tender and the skin was crispy, but it was lacking flavour other than salty. <br/><br/>Cendol Panna Cotta<br/>Price: $13<br/>Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌝<br/>Saw this interesting combination on the menu. The ice cream was really good, and complemented the panna cotta well. It might be too sweet for some people, but I personally liked it. It was the perfect end to the meal. <br/><br/>Makan served simple Indonesian dishes. I feel like it needs more variety of flavour. However, it was still a great place if you want a taste of Indonesian dishes. I personally think that it needs more variety of flavour in all of the dishes.

4.5 out of 5!! <br/>We served by the best waitress in the world, Ainslie!! She makes our night!!<br/>They have an indonesian authentic flavor. First of all, if you like nasi goreng, this is the place to eat!! The taste just too good!! It tastes like we’re home. The chicken satay and cendol pana cota is mouth watering as well. The portion is big too. <br/>But, the only complain that i have is about their crispy duck and pork shank, both are a bit too salty. If they can make it slightly less salt, I’m gonna give 5 out of 5 😂😂. But overall is a pleasure to eat there. Will come back for their curry since I didn’t have it today.

Decided to try this Indonesian restaurant for the curiosity of foods cook by the chef of the resto are Tasia and Gracia (My Kitchen Rule u2016 winner). We ordered chicken betutu, beef rendang, bbq pork ribs, opor vegetable (white curry sauce), pastel, risoles and bbq corn. Happy with the bbq pork ribs and beef rendang, it was delicious, full of flavors and beef rendang was the star of the night, they did really well beef rendang, as Indonesian I was impressed with these beef rendang, the beef were so soft, tender and juicy. Not happy with opor vegetables, with the price tag, it was over price. The most disappointment is from the ayam betutu, it was tasteless and pricey. We tried to give feedback to the waiter but she kind of refused what we said. It was disappointed. Tasia and Gracia were in kitchen tho, so it was a good experience in general 😊

Really good. Satisfying and hearty, amazing flavours. This is the hit the spot good you look for but rarely find. Better than chin chin and without the queues. Best dishes are the grilled chicken with sambal and the barrimundi broth. Best restaurant discovery in the past five years.

I never GIVE 5✨ rating to indonesian restaurant but this one is really deserve it!!! I love all of the menu i ordered. Lilit Skewers and Banana Creme Brulee are my favorites 😍😍😍 the risoles and fried rice were amazing too, it has that Indonesian taste but modern enough. I love it. The waitress was very friendly and kind, so me and my boyfriend were really happy eating here.

Being a big fan of MKR it was exciting to see Tasia & Gracia open their new restraunt.<br/><br/>What a delight to be greeted by Tasia who welcomed our party of 7 and ensured that we were well looked after.<br/><br/>We started off the the Soft-shell crab, Padang tomato sauce, steamed bun and the  Fried crepe roll, chicken filling, tangy peanut sauce, this was so fresh and delicious we ordered another serving 😋😋.<br/><br/>We ordered mains to share including the Nasi goreng, chicken, cabbage, Asian greens, crackers, fried egg,  Beef brisket rendang, potatoes these were ok.<br/><br/>Ubud crispy duck, fresh cabbage, cucumber,<br/>basil, mixed sambal I felt was a little too overcooked and dry for me personally.<br/><br/>BBQ sticky ribs, sweet soy glaze, sambal Pork is so amazing my favourite meal of the evening. The meat was so tender. We also had the fish of the day which was freshly prepared and full of flavour.<br/><br/>Now the most amazing part of the evening was dessert....each and everyone were executed perfectly. Luckily our waitress did suggest we share as they were massive and so delicious 😍😍.<br/><br/>The Cendol panna cotta, jackfruit,<br/>pandan tapioca pearls, palm sugar & coconut foam was the perfect balance of flavours.<br/>The Black sticky rice, salted coconut cream, sesame nougatine, coconut & kaffir lime<br/>ice cream had a delicious and the texture was spot on.<br/>Banana brûlée, chocolate ice cream, cheddar crisp, condensed milk chantilly was a great sweet light dessert.<br/>The Mocha cake was delicious and dense along with the avocado mousse, dark chocolate ganache but that Balinese coffee ice cream was amazzing.<br/><br/>Attentive service throughout the evening and to top it off we took a photo with Gracia ( as Tasia was busy working in the kitchen).<br/><br/>Overall it is a bit tricky to find the restraunt but follow the instructions I have posted in my pics!<br/>
Connie
I loved the flavours of all the dishes that I had ! I especially loved the beef sticky ribs ! Literally finger licking good and I loved the spicy sauces too 🙌🏼 desserts were delicious as well. The only disapointing thing was that we had to wait quite a while for the mains while everyone else seemed to already have those

My friend and I came here for some lunch. She had heard portion sizes might be on the small side but nothing to fear here. This restaurant oozes generosity in both the food and service.<br/><br/>We had a booking which had only just been received by them, we were warmly greeted by the waitress and she could not have been lovelier. In fact all the ladies serving our table were bubbly, helpful, and attentive. The space is a modern contemporary and located in an office building.<br/><br/>Then placemats double as the menu as the bright design on one side when flipped reveals all the dishes on offer. They also offer a Lunch Express menu which suited us today. We decided on the Mie Goreng, Chicken, Cabbage, Asian Greens, Crackers, Fried Egg as well as Beef Brisket Rendang On Rice, Bean Shoot Urap, Boiled Egg. They were both great portion sizes and both packed full of flavour. The were happy to bring us extra plates to share the meals. The mee goreng had tasty noodles combined with the other ingredients topped with an egg. The rendang is melt in the mouth and had a spicy kick that was lovely.<br/><br/>

I was so excited to try Tasia and Gracia to open up their restaurant – Makan on Collins St. In the heart of the busy CBD, their are situated inside the building. I go to code black for coffee all the time, and there is Makan hidden in the corner. I can see why it’s a bit hard to find for those who don’t work or know the area. But I had it all sorted…
Bite The Looks By BHA
I booked this restaurant from website 1 week before. Upon my arrival, the staffs greeted me directly and take me to the designated table. <br/><br/> FOOD:<br/>1. BBQ Sticky Ribs with sweet soy glaze and sambal beef<br/>2. Pindang Barramundi, thai eggplant, aromatic sweet & sour broth<br/>3. Nasi goreng, chicken, cabbage, asian greens, cracker & fried egg<br/>4. Cendol Panacotta with jack fruit, pandan tapioca pearls, palm sugar & coconut foam<br/><br/>Overall,the food was really delicious!!! Its beyond my expectation. The ribs is spectacular! The meat cooked perfectly and seasoned well! The sambal was so good too! Its not spicy but addictive! The barramundi is soft and the skin is so crispy. The broth itslef was full of flavours and spices. The cendol pannacotta is exceptional too(the best version of modern cendol im a glass)!. The nasi goreng reminded me of the street food in indonesia that always open until midnight.<br/><br/>I’ve Been missing this indonesian food since ages. And this restaurant really hit the spot and fit my tastebuds well (all the food that i ordered was really closed to what i have in indonesia and even better!)<br/><br/>The staffs was great, friendly and attentive. Good food and great place to eat with your friends too.. will be be back again for sure!<br/><br/>#BHAsFoodDiary

One of the best Indonesian food I’ve had in Melbourne! Contemporary but still incorporating the traditional flavours of indonesian cuisine! So excited that they have finally opened! Especially with the 2016 MKR winners- Tasia and Gracia! Finally able to try their food in real life- Fried chicken with sweet sauce!! and also their pork ribs, beef ribs, Pork shank!! And for desserts definitely the cendol panacotta!! The list goes on! Cannot wait for my next trip there!!
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I stumbled across this place as I was walking through 360 Collins and it took me by surprise. The fittings are done exceptionally and it feels like you’re in one of the popular asian fusion restaurants on Chapel. <br/><br/>🍩Lizzie enjoyed: The starters were absolutely amazing - The chicken wings were to die for and so was the kingfish ceviche. <br/><br/>🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: the main meals were really disappointing. I was very excited for them but it was a let down. I didn’t particularly enjoy the ubud cripsy duck as it was a little dry and didn’t come with enough sauce to balance the meats out. The chicken betutu was very bland and definitely not what we expected for a fusion restaurant. <br/><br/>🥇Lizzie rates overall: A great concept as its Balinese fusion and there’s nothing like this in Melbourne - so I’d give it a shot again next time! I wouldn’t go for the feed me menu though - I’d stick to a la carte where it seems there are more meals that appeals to my appetite.

New Indonesian restaurant in town!! Congrats tasia and gracia for bringing Indonesian cuisine to the next level. <br/><br/>The service was amazing. Wait staff was very friendly, bubly and helpfull <br/><br/>It is quite pricey but its a good value for good quality food.
Hello. Imnikki
First and foremost, the hospitality here is fantastic. Our party of 4 was well looked after, and kept entertained, by the most delightful Canadian lass whose name we unfortunately forgot to ask. The bartender was also very accommodating in allowing me to turn the Es Soda Gembira into a delicious cocktail by adding a shot of vodka.<br/><br/>If only the food could mirror the hospitality, this meal would have been faultless. Alas, some of the dishes just fell short. The Beef Brisket Rendang was missing the complex and aromatic flavours of the spices, and for some reason, we could taste a subtle tomato undertone. The Bean Shoots and Snake Beans Urap could also benefit from more seasoning.<br/><br/>In terms of taste and execution, the Ubud Crispy Duck and Grilled Jimbaran Fish were far superior compared to the rendang. The sweet and sour tamarind sauce was a perfect match for the fish, and the duck skin was wonderfully crispy.<br/><br/>The red rice and Jasmine rice were surprisingly lukewarm, and a bit too moist and clumped together.<br/><br/>We couldn't decide which desserts to order so we ordered all 4. The Banana Brulee excelled in its simplicity, and I enjoyed the marriage of the different elements of the Cendol Panna Cotta. However, the Mocha Sponge and Black Sticky Rice lacked strong flavours, and were rather ordinary.<br/><br/>Maybe because we were expecting so much more from Tasia and Gracia, we felt that the flavours and execution of the dishes could be improved on.<br/>

I have been to this restaurant a few times since it has opened, both dine in and take away. I am happy to say that I have not been disappointed at all. The service here is great and the wait staff are so friendly. The dishes I have had here have all been flavourful and very tasty. My favourites would have to be the nasi goreng and the soft shell crab buns. So delicious!

One of the best indonesian cuisine in melbourne that u can find !! the service is really good , kudos to all the friendly staff! Ive visited for 2 times now<br/><br/>I did not give a perfect 5 star because the Nasi goreng(Fried rice) and Mi goreng (Fried Noodles) were quite salty, yes 2 times i went and i ate the same thing<br/><br/>But the satay and the pork with sambal matah was really delicious, highly recommended!<br/><br/>I really love the vibe of the restaurant as well, so modern and chill<br/><br/>Food taste 8/10<br/>Food presentation 8/10<br/>Service 11/10<br/>Interior 10/10

Rating more of 3.5.<br/>Makan has rich flavours that resembles those of Indonesia, and takes on more of the traditional and authentic dishes from Bali. The location is in an office building, so it's easy to miss, but once you're in the building, the restaurant itself is very modern and dimly lit but gives an overall hipster vibe. <br/><br/>Service was friendly and definitely wanted to ensure that we were comfortable. Dishes are meant to be shared, but I give it 3 stars because I still find what we ordered to be rather small for the price we paid; that being said, depending on the dish you get, price can also be reasonable (i.e. their nasi goreng/ mi goreng) <br/><br/>Nasi Goreng - rich flavours of umami in their fried rice with good chunks of chicken. You can taste the soy based rice and it wasnt too oily nor heavy. A little bit salty for my taste, but the rich flavours definitely brought out an Indonesian flare. Servings are good for perhaps one person, but to share you end up getting maybe 4-6 of their spoonfuls of rice, which isnt too much. Comes with rice crackers which were nicely crisp, and a fried egg which was medium so the yolk ran through the rice, which is amazing! I would give this 3.5-4. <br/><br/>Chicken Betutu - the betutu here is sous vide, and you can tell as the breast meat I got was still tender and not dry. Can be a bit more juicy but overall better than many other restaurants where my chicken breasts are usually dry. The soup curry base was pleasant but again a bit on the saltier side, although you can taste a hint of lemongrass that peeps through the curry taste, which was nice. Along with the nasi goreng it was definitely a bit too much salt in my palate, so I would recommend eating this with a rice dish. Came with 4 pieces of meat: 2 drumsticks and 2 breast pieces with a few veggies. I would give this 3.5. <br/><br/>Fish saate - the fish skewers came in 3, and it actually didnt taste like fish but kind of a chicken mince texture, which was really interesting. It had a little kick to it but also had rich flavours in lemongrass. Overall good, but I think a little on the pricier side. I would give this 3.5. <br/><br/>Overall, I would like to try their other dishes and I would come back for their fried rice/ noodles as I think it was a good price offering. Would love to try their other curries as well. I give it closer to a 3 due to the pricing and the smaller portions. That being said, I can see myself having a beautiful girl's nice out here and just chill and order shared plates!

Had a lovely dinner last night. The staff was great and the menu was approachable (I’d never had Indonesian Food before). Highly recommend the satay skewers (the sauce is amazing), the fish was fresh and tasty, and we finished off the meal with the black sticky rice and coconut cream...perfect amount of sweet and savoury.
Flying Forward
Points for: beautifully executed modern hawker food<br/><br/> From the winners of My Kitchen Rules, Makan celebrates food from the region of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.<br/>A great way to sample the food is the express lunch menu.<br/>* Beef Massaman - chunks of tender beef in a thick, rich, punchy dry curry made of dessicated coconut and spices. The flavour was lightly salty, mildly spicy but really velvety and really delicious. <br/>* Pan fried fish with chilli jam - a bit of a smaller portion than I expected. The chilli jam is wonderful though, a mild sweetness like caramel and chilli undertones really gave the fish a lot of flavour. Bottle the chilli jam!<br/>* Cendol Pana Cotta - loved this take on the classic cendol. You can taste the pandan in the pana cotta, which was soft but firm. The palm sugar (gula melaka) and coconut foam was more like a whipped cream and had dark caramel coconut. Finally the fragrant and sweet jackfruit slices gave another element of sweetness. Such a good combination!<br/>The restaurant is quite new, and the design is modern.<br/>Staff were very friendly and attentive. Well done!

Fantastic and interesting flavors, though the portion sizes and wait time left a lot to be desired.<br/><br/>The soft shell crab was a simple dish that hit in all the right places— and it’s not just because we’re partial to it! The tomato sauce that went with it had the fragrance of lemon grass and it was amazing. As a first course, we were very content.<br/><br/>The wait time for the next two dishes definitely went over an hour and despite the wait staff being very friendly, it was a bit of a downer. <br/><br/>The plate for the Nasi goreng was 1/3 prawn crackers, and I ate one that hadn’t been properly deep-fried (hence, inedibly hard), and 1/5 shredded carrots. The rice smelled and tasted delicious, but I couldn’t help for a plating that was either more generous or wasn’t using cheaper ingredients as filler.<br/><br/>As far as the ox tail went... the meat was technically fall of the bone, but it was also incredibly stiff? We suspect that due to the lack of meat on ox tails that they supplemented with other parts, but it definitely didn’t work quite as well even though the flavors were hearty, a little bit sweet and overall delicious. <br/><br/>The portions for us were just right, but we don’t have large appetites. The place overall has a lot of potential— they had flavors that were stand outs for sure— they just need to work on better time management in the kitchen and plating. Interested enough to try it again in the future to see if it improves!
Linda
Delicious!!! Intense flavours which have clearly been brewing for hours. Dishes were cooked beautifully and served with great hospitality in a trendy space. Loved it! Just make sure you access the place via Collins Gate (off little Collins) on the weekend when the 360 Collins entrance is shut!

Delicious and definitely best presented Indonesian food in Melbourne. BBQ beef ribs were amazing. The octopus, nasi goreng and cendol panna cotta were also highlights. Staff were lovely. Will be coming back.

When I found out that Tasia and Gracia - the winners of MKR tv show’s previous season - finally launched a food joint, I was so excited to try their dishes. Especially after the judges raved about their sambal and sauces almost on every episode.<br/><br/>So we - hubby, baby and I - decided to give it a go. Hidden in one if the tall office buildings on Collins St, the restaurant is right at the heart of CBD. Very convenient. We went to their lunch service on a week day to avoid the crowd and possible waiting time. The place was probably 1/10 filled. <br/><br/>We ordered their lunch menu, a chicken satay dish and fish. Wasn’t as explosively rave-worthy as I thought they were. The satay were rather chunky, although succulent, therefore inauthentic. Satay sauce was ok but not great. Just lacking flavour. The fish dish was ok, I can taste a bit of Balinese flavour in the sambal. The fish portion was tiny though in comparison to the rice. <br/><br/>To clarify whether any of the MKR winner was in the kitchen - yes I did see Tasia working in there.<br/><br/>However the staff service was so friendly and impressive, nothing to fault. I give the food 2 stars, the staff service 4 stars. So middle ground 3 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️.<br/><br/><br/><br/>

This place is a hidden inside the 360 collins st building but when you walk inside it's nice interior. The food is good and delicious. Very tasty although a bit salty. Would need some greens or rice to go with it so make sure you order it to go with your food! Dont just rely on the nasi goreng. Not too sure on the black sticky rice dessert as it was massive after a big meal and quite filling. Cocktails are nice and strong. A good experience and worth trying out to go with a group of friends or even as a date spot. Service was impeccable and the staff are lovely and attentive.

I ate here few weeks ago with my friend for dinner. Ordered mie goreng, beef ribs, crispy duck, pindang, and octopus. <br/><br/>As an Indonesian native, I think all the foods that day has the similar taste with the ones in Indonesia. However, Indonesian food is known for their distinctive taste of herbs and spices, which Makan has to improve. The seasoning has to be stronger in order to "hit" that Indonesian standard.<br/><br/>Despite, the dessert was vanquisher. Nicely presented. Banana brûlée and cendol panna cotta successfully satisfied my sweet tooth.<br/><br/>The service was top notch. No words needed, 5 stars!

I have Already been to Makan twice not and cannot recommended it highly enough. <br/><br/>It is really good value for money for high quality Indonesian food. The chicken ribs and the nasi goreng were the standout dishes- the prawn crackers on the nasi goreng were delicious! There was a really good level of spice in all the dishes we tried. The service was extremely attentive and friendly, the whole team seemed very experienced and on the ball. <br/><br/>We will definitely be back soon, keep up the great work guys!
Foodme
Very attentive and engaging staff with great senses of humour and loads of personality.<br/><br/>Lovely presentation of food. A little bit fancy, a lot creative, and packed with flavour. No favourite dishes here because everything was so tasty!<br/><br/>The only downside is that although the dishes are for sharing, they are a tad small.

Makan is owned by Tasia and Gracia who were past My Kitchen Rules contestants. I wonder though, are they in the kitchen of their own restaurant? <br/><br/>We decided to try the $55 feed me menu. I would advise for others against ordering the feed me menu. The value for money isn’t there and you don’t have much choice about what is served. $55 per person is a lot of money especially if you don’t feel like you are getting much value out of it. <br/><br/>I think the highlight were the entrees. The satay skewers were cold however the staff did make another lot of skewers for us which were a lot warmer. <br/><br/>The duck was very dry and didn’t taste nice at all. The the BBQ sticky ribs were very oily and fatty. It tasted very unpleasant. <br/><br/>The green cabbage salad was tasteless. <br/><br/>Knives should be on the table since a lot of the dishes require a knife especially if you are sharing. The duck is difficult to eat without a knife, and we watched our friend struggle to eat the duck because it was so tough. It’s good he didn’t lose a tooth but watching him eat the duck gave us a good laugh. Fortunately once we asked for knives we were promptly provided with them.<br/><br/>I can’t fault the service. The staff are very friendly! One of the few positives of Makan so far.<br/><br/>I organise a lot of dinners/lunches that have feed me menus and Makan’s feed me menu was the lowest quality feed me menu I’ve tried so far. Perhaps the feed me menu would be more well valued with a larger group but I think a lot of customers would feel hungry afterwards. <br/><br/>More care is definitely needed in the kitchen to ensure meals are not cold, dry or tough.
Kevin
The decor is very chic with very friendly and helpful staff.<br/><br/>However, the food sadly disappointed us. The entrees served was nice albeit of them of being cold which was promptly rectified.<br/><br/>As we had the feed me menu we were served three mains consisting of the duck, beef ribs, veggies and a side of rice and sambal. Our duck was extremely tough, salty and dry with very little greens (two leaves of cabbage, one strip of cucumber and a small sprig of mint) and sambal which did not help balance out the duck. The next course of beef pork ribs were was also tough and dry as well with a weird oily skin to it. Our veggies dish smelt nice but upon sampling found it had no flavour as well. The side of rice accompying our meal was lukewarm was well.<br/><br/>Overall we spent $155 between the three of us which at the current moment is to be honest not worth the money. As it's a new restaurant there will be growing pains and hopefully these issues will he rectified. With such a nice and chic decor it would be a shame to see it go down the drain due to the food. Hopefully these issues will be fixed in the future but for now please avoid.<br/><br/>

One of the best restaurants in Melbourne. Just amazing. The recipe is balanced well for every dishes. Especially the dessert, I would recommend the black rice with ice cream if you don’t like sweet. A little pricey for the amount of food but with this taste and quality, I don’t complain. Plus, friendly service. Making this my fav place.

New restaurant opened by Tasia & Gracia - MKR winners 2016. <br/><br/>I have visited Makan twice now and have had a great experience on both occasions. <br/><br/>Ordered a few meals to try (on two separate occasions) including: <br/><br/>Entrée: Soft shell crab (honestly give these a go!), Fried chicken ribs chilli and sweet soy glaze (full of delicious flavour), Grilled jumbo prawns, Fried crepe roll. All were exceptional. <br/><br/>Sharing/main: Pindang barramundi (my absolute favourite broth dish, the flavour in this broth was soo good), Pork shank (huge serving, delicious flavours), Charred octopus, BBQ sticky ribs pork (excellent flavours, we just had to order another serve!)<br/><br/>Sweet: Black sticky rice, Banana brulee (a must try). <br/><br/>Food was delicious with amazing flavours. Service very friendly & welcoming from the moment we entered the restaurant. Staff member at the door even remembered my name when we re-visited the restaurant a week or so later. Reasonable prices, exceptional quality. A great restaurant, food and staff.

I loved Tasia & Gracia on MKR so I had to try their new place. I had the beef rendang which was cooked well and full of flavor with a hint of spicy chili. Unfortunately I found it too oily which made me struggle to finish eating it.
