Fave place when I missing asian food. All noodles dishes are best. Their fried rice also one of the best in town. Usually I order extra a portion of roasted pork. It's really mouth watering. Can't wait evwrything back to normal, so I can eat there again.

This Chinese Malaysian eatery caught our eyes for only one reason - 'One will either hate it or love it's reason being that the Chinese influence on the Malaysian cuisine gives the usual flavours a very unusual touch.

Ordered the Prawn Noodles and Chicken Curry with Rice

And both were amazing and quite unusual to taste.

Service is very quick and efficient. Also, it's not a very big place so can.get crowded.

Pretty huge portion of bak kut teh.. surprised (happy surprised 😂) when it came. Could be eaten for two if add another rice/noodle I suppose. Didn’t really taste the herbs of usual bak kut teh from this one, but with the generous portion, it’s still alright :)

The signature dish is a must try. Lunch are always busy.
Staff were pleasant. Speed of meals depends on orders. Sometimes it’s 2-5 min other times over 15-30min.

Tried other item in the menu but nothing compare the the original .

Me and my friends had been here since the place was named kitchen inn or something similar :p it used to be quiter but now jam packed! They even opened their second joints thank god.
We went here since its close to where we live but then got addicted to its kolo mee and kampua with special soup (extra sauce for me! :p), sarawak laksa are nice as well! These dishes are something that are hard to find in Melbourne.
The staff here are always attentive, The food is great, especially the handmade noodle!

4 stars for food
5 stars for service
3 stars for ambience ( they are jammed pack and the tables can be really close to each other)

I was craving some asian style fried rice, and decided to try Sarawak Kitchen. I got the special fried rice with bbq pork and prawns. The portion was huge; I had to pack half of it back home because I couldn't finish it. While there were only about 4 prawns in the dish, the amount of rice and egg that was given was a lot. Bbq pork bits were mixed in with the rice and egg as well. Overall, a good plate of fried rice like the ones back home. I'll definitely come back again to try the other dishes.
The service was fast but don't expect tip-top super friendly and warm customer service. Just order, eat and go.
Update: went back to try the Ban Mee. So glad it lived up to expectations.

I've been patronising Sarawak Kitchen since years back, and the food has always been consistently good! I've tried quite a number of dishes on the menu to date, such as the kolo mee, thai style fried rice and nasi lemak, and none of them have disappointed. What I appreciate the most is how authentic the flavours are. Definitely comfort food especially for malaysians and singaporeans!

J’s score 4.0 stars. J had a quick solo lunch here on Tue 21st May.

Service pleasant, courteous and efficient. Only a short wait for food, although busy.

Not a fancy place but pleasant surrounds.

J had the standard Nasi lemak ($7.50). A large serve of coconut rice, whole boiled egg with very nice sambal (lots of onions), mixed lettuce, lots of peanuts, very crunchy and nice anchovies.

She also had a home-made Lemon iced tea, which had a nice strong green tea base but was thankfully not sweet!

Just what the Dr ordered apparently – a return trip warranted with me in tow…

Food is satisfying and affordably priced. Would definitely recommend!. Coffee with a shot of condensed milk. Deliciously sweet and refreshing! ★★★★

A nice small spot with a tight seating arrangement. Headed in for the laksa, but unfortunately they didn't have it. Therefore headed off for the kolo mee and their chicken rice.

The kolo mee was such a good treat with a well flavored, generous portion of noodle with good BBQ pork slices. A very filling satisfying meal. The chicken rice was too gd and closely Malaysian!

Overall a good meal, will be back for the laksa!

Great prices with bold flavours. Service was fast and dishes were decent in size, good for one person.

Ordered the nasi lemak with curry beef/ rendang. Good amount of spice for me as it wasnt overpowered but just slight heat seeping through. The sambal was also flavourful with a little sweetness with the onions but definitely added to the spice. Some of the peanuts were a little salty but the anchovies together with it definitely completed the nasi lemak taste! I would say that the coconut rice lacked flavour when you ate it with everything, but on its own there were subtle note of coconut.

The curry beef/ rendang itself was tasty, but you get really thirty afterwards. That being said, again, there wasnt too much spice but the beef was nice and tender and pulled apart with little effort when I had it (some pieces were less soft but overall not chewy and the texture I look for when eating brisket). Good 5 chunks of meat and a decent amount of curry that will be enough to mix with the rice.
4/5 is a combination of all aspects: reasonable pricing, fast service, and relatively decent flavours, I would love to come back and try the other dishes. While I am not malaysian or south east asian, many of my malaysian friends do recommend as it does remind them of the street food back at home.

I would say its a very nice food for what you paid to them. Quality is not bad and pretty simillar with the OG Malaysia food. However, the most annoying things from this restaurant is that they need minimum $30 EFTPOS. Below than $30, they will charge you $1 for the card transaction. Howrverr, i found it really annoying and i know they can do better than that.

In the past, the tomato kueh teows weren’t consistent on the sauce - sometimes it has no flavours or just too sweet or colour would be pink !

But after a long hiatus - I decided to why no and I’m glad I did - this time it was the right wok hei aka smokey taste and beautiful balance tomato sauce.

Would have appreciated more toppings rather than too much noodles

I LOVE their Kolo Mee!!! The noodle is freshly made. The texture of the noodle is extraordinary. The noodle in its own is already super tasty. The meat is seasoned very well with a balance of sweet ans savoury. I love to add a lot of the special chilly sauce that they have on the sides at every table. It just add up so much flavour to it.

We ordered the Kolo Mee and Kampua Mee at Sarawak Kitchen today. If I didn’t order a special, it would have been a $10 meal which was quite worth it. Portions are huge, noodles are delicious (esp with chilli oil). Could even take away for lunch the next day. The pork meat tastes funny though - not your usual caramelised pork. Their char siu is drier unfortunately. If they improve that, maybe this will be a 5 star place

The speciality dish of long-standing Elizabeth Street Sarawak Kitchen is the kampua. It’s a Sarawak (Malaysia) noodle dish which translates to dry noodles on a plate. And according to the first Googled search result, it’s an authentic one here in the busy streets of Melbourne. My friends headed along to Sarawak Kitchen as it was one that we walked past often, but hadn’t yet tried. I’m not sure how long it’s been around, but it’s at least seven years, so it’s got some lasting power. The success of the establishment lies in the handmade noodles served simply with seasoning and tasty meat. Prices are student friendly at $10-$11.50, depending if you go for the regular or large size.

Huge servings of noodles (pretty sure they're housemade) topped with mock charsiu make a great and cheap vegan meal in the CBD. There's a low meat to noodle ration but otherwise everything is so good. If you're extra hungry, grab a hearty vegan drink like an iced barley or soy milk with grass jelly.

One of the best places for authentic Malaysian food, hands down. We've been coming here occasionally since it first opened, and since then they have always served really good food at a very reasonable price. Most dishes are barely over $10 and prices have been steady ever since they opened. That alone is a real testimony to the owner's commitment to serve quality food at a fair price amidst lots of restaurants nowadays that steadily creep their prices up as the years go by.

And in case you're wondering, the portion sizes are nothing to scoff at either. The meals are generous and filling, and if you're a smaller eater, you could potentially get 2 meals out of a portion (like my wife does sometimes). The fried dishes have a good wok taste to it, which is so crucial to Asian cooking. Our favourites include the kampua noodles (very nice hand made noodles, though the sauce is a bit oily if you're not used to it), fried vermicelli with curry chicken (they always give you 2 whole drumsticks!), and the zhao cai fish bee hoon (preserved vegetables with fried fish and bee hoon noodles). My only caveat is the food we got the last couple of times there seemed to taste slightly different from usual, so I'm not sure if the cooking staff have changed.

Ambience is no frills and you may need to share tables, and service is pretty quick. There is also a relatively high minimum charge for EFTPOS, but the food is worth it.

At very reasonable prices compared to other places like Papparich that are asking for $16 for similar dishes (which in my opinion is just outright greedy), this place is a no-brainer for Malaysians and Singaporeans looking for a taste of home.

Comfort food from my hometown, definitely hits the mark and represents itself well. Pretty authentic considering we are so far away from Sarawak. The Kolo Mee is 90% there and the Laksa is quite possibly nowhere near the original but pretty good laksa nonetheless. The Bak Kut Teh is the ultimate comfort food on a cold winter's day. Thankful for a place that serves food I grew up eating!

Had the Kampua Special and Teh Tarik.

Kampua Special came with BBQ pork, crispy pork belly, and prawns. I ordered a large and it was actually quite huge, note that the large only comes with extra noodle (more than double of a regular's portion) and not extra toppings. Needless to say I couldn't finish the noodles as it was way too much.

Noodle was tasty, though there are a few lumps. The BBQ pork wasn't the type I prefer, but it's the common type served at noodle stalls in Malaysia. The prawns were plain but juicy. The meat highlight would be the crispy pork belly, it had that brown appearance that are sometimes found usually at noodle stalls, to the point - the fat is so rendered it melts in your mouth and the skin is just pure crisp, definitely has that aromatic crispy pork belly flavour.

Teh Tarik was really good. This one even came in that classic kopitiam cup and saucer, was pulled nicely with that classic foam, and tasted probably 99% like the ones in Malaysia (not 100% as I was recovering from a flu so my taste buds were slightly muted). This is the first place I tried that tasted legit like back in Malaysia.

Overall, very authentic Malaysian food. I'd give a 5 star if they served that charred fatty cut of BBQ pork even though it may stray away from the original style.

Ive have been going to this place for awhile and now I think its time for me to review this place.

If youre in to thin noodles, you should definetly try their noodle soup. Its light, filling and best to have when the weather is cold. You also get the value out of your money. $10 for a large noodle soup, you can even share it and get more food.Although it can get packed during busy time but its one of the places you eat-and-go.

I normally come here after work when its cold and have their noodles to warm me up.

If you want good thin noodles, filling food and value of money , try this place!

Also, If you’re into coffee, try their malaysian coffee its different from your typical latte!

The reason i didnt give 5 star is because I always order the same noodle soup. I need to try their different dishes and see how it goes.

With a menu as big as theirs, it's important to know what to come here for. Their Sarawak Laksa is a big hit among my friends and I. We never order anything else when we come here, as we know that the laksa is very good.

Having said that, it won't be the kind of laksa that you expect coming from Flemington's Laksa King. The laksa is less gourmet and more homemade, but it is so hearty and filling that I cannot fault it.

So if you do come here, order their laksa!

We had dinner here around 9pm on a Saturday night and it was super busy. The fried kuey teow was nice, so is the foochow wet fried noodles. The curry fish was ok, but think they over fried the fish before drenching it in the curry so was tough. The claypot noodle drops was tasty but would prefer more sauce and the egg a bit under so we could stir it through the sauce. Fried chicken was so so. Quite a decent value meal but too bad have to spend $35 or more before we could use eftpos.

I was told that Sarawak Kitchen served pretty authentic Malaysian cuisine. Not sure how accurate that is since I’ve never been to Malaysia, but the meals that I had here were super delicious! Had the Kolo Mee (served with BBQ & minced pork - YUM) and Bak Kut Teh and they were absolutely scrumptious. Meals were of good value, and their menu was fairly extensive. Service and ambiance were those of your typical cheap Chinese/Asian eateries but would definitely return to try their other dishes.

Regular at this place because it’s close to where I live.

My favourite is their kampua with roast pork, Kolo mee, braised preserves vegetable with pork belly, fried drumsticks and penang fried kuey teow. Delicious. The char kuey teow reminded me of the ones I had back home with ‘wok hei’ and ‘chai po’.

I used to like their fish curry but somehow the taste has changed. Their is too much curry powder used in the fish curry now.

This place serve generous portion with reasonable price on top of delicious food offered. That’s why I am regular I guess. That’s always some food I crave for from there.

Travellers p.o.v.

Being a Sarawakian myself, you can trust me when I say this is the real thing! The Kam Pua mee tastes exactly like what you'd get at a local hawker store in Sarawak. Even the way they slice the BBQ pork is the same - thin slices.

The kolo mee however doesn't have the right noodles, and seems to taste like the kam pua mee. I think they haven't quite nailed it, or perhaps it's not possible to buy the right noodles here. I am definitely being super picky, as I'm from Sarawak. But regardless, I enjoyed my meal at this restaurant!

Not to mention, they have a cute menu design and the cutlery they use is something you would totally find in Sarawak! How cool is that!

To the store owner: if you're reading this, maybe you can consider adding three layer tea to the menu?

A place to go whenever I crave for Chinese-Indonesian styled noodles as if is the closest yet tastiest you can get around the CBD area. The kolomee is my ultimate favorite as it has a sweet savoury taste that blends well with the charsiu & minced pork (I would always change it into flat noodles because I loveeee flat noodles) my partner loves the kampua as it is not too sweet compared to the kolomee; you may ask for a clear soup if u like and they will provide it free of charge. The service is pretty standard and fast during non-busy hour. Expect queue during peak hour tho.

I'd visit to this place if I really want a cheap eat, that would fill up my stomach. First of all, the fried rice is the bomb here! I've been to this place three times and those three times have been me trying out their different variations of fried rice. The best one that I've tried is the salted fish fried rice which is $10.5 for a large portion, something about that saltiness from the fish and glistening rice just got me hooked. Nasi Pattaya for $10.9 was also good but a bit too sweet for my liking and the special fried rice $10.5 was amazing but a bit on the original side. 😊

Service: something you would expect from a busy restaurant, they weren't rude but didn't seem happy serving us :)

Only down side to the place is probably the lack of English comprehension of some of the staff. One waitress had to be asked twice for an order despite being clearly indicated the first time. Other than that great place to eat. Restaurant is small but cosy. Great for winter nights.

Nasi Lemak was fair, but felt incomplete. Taste of the Sambal didn't quite match my liking. It was a bit too sweet as compared to the more spicy version that I prefer. But thats just my preference.
Hot Teh Tarik was probably one of the best Teh Tarik I have had in Melbourne. 5/5
