Review Doughnut Time - Melbourne

Emily May
Two of us came to Doughnut Time on a Friday morning for some donuts! We were pleasantly surprised to find that the doughnut shop was open – even on Good Friday, when most stores, cafes and restaurants are closed due to the public holiday. We got one oreo and one jam donut, which were both vegan and incredibly sweet! Thank you for the very prompt customer service and delicious fresh donuts :)

Though I more of a spice and savoury person, I must admit that I do need my sugar rush once in a while. My colleagues took me to {Doughnut Time} for a post lunch Dessert fix, and it's quiet obvious that these guys serve the best doughnuts in CBD. The huge queues and people leaving the place with boxes of doughnut goodness, proves that. The flavours were interesting to start with, with even more interesting toppings like cookie dough, lego (I trust, they are edible). But what was more interesting was their choice of names for the big bad doughnuts. Meet The Mint Eastwood or would you care for a Vegan Fox. And I chose a date with Vegan Fox, which was a massive Chocolate glaze doughnut (which was vegan) topped with generous servings of freeze-dried strawberries with crushed pistachios scattered. The portion size was huge and was too much for one serving, unless you are greedy like me. I still recommend sharing it. Quick Summary - A wonderfully cooked doughnut with melt-in-your-mouth toppings is a joy to enjoy with your loved one(s). {Doughnut Time}, its going to take quiet a few visits to try out all the items on your menu, but I am not complaining, you are going to see me more in your long queue of customers.

If you like donuts with lots of fillings, this is the place to go. I personally find it a bit too sweet and can't finish the whole donut myself. Vegan options available.

The 'Liam Hemsworthy' used to be my favourite doughnut; I would go out of my way to regularly eat one, often multiple times a week. I don't know what they did to the recipe, but this is not the same doughnut. I disagree with the other comments calling it 'stale', but it is extremely dry and there's no 'red velvet' flavour to speak of despite the (practically neon) red colour. The cookie cream topping that I used to love is now a thick, overly-sweet paste that tastes of nothing. The biscuits on top are brittle and crumble into crumbs at the lightest touch, but at least they have a vaguely-chocolate taste. This is not worth paying for, but it's ESPECIALLY not worth paying $6.60 for. Avoid this place and go to the nearby Walker's Doughnuts (or Brunetti, if you just want something sweet) instead.
Crispy Air
Only tried the vegan donuts. Red velvet too dry. I like the jam filling.
Henry Boadle
Very interesting selection of flavors but i can't help but feel the Doughnuts i purchased were over a day old as the pastry had a bread like texture. I urge anyone reading this to give cooking some doughnuts at home a try it's not as much work as you think and nothing beats a fresh doughnut.

I've heard so much hype about this place, but it was a let down. The donuts are pricey, where they look flashy, are big and doughy, offer no quality or discerning taste, I got a donut and hot chocolate for $10, which is a little crazy. The hot chocolate was very sweet, but not practical, there was no way you could hold a donut, and drink the hot chocolate, and since it was dripping chocolate on the sides for effect, it made my hands sticky.

C'mon guys get back to basics, the appearance of your sweet treats is excellent but the dough is awfully dry and tough. I was lured in to the Tim tam and it didn't even resemble the name at all, poor form!

Rediscovered Doughnut Time again today after quite some absence. Today it was as if they had created a doughnut flavour perfect for me, that being the apple crumbly “Get Ready to Crumble”. This vegan friendly cinnamon apple filled doughnut had caramel glaze and was topped with a pecan crumb. An absolute highlight. There were several other familiar flavours from our last visit and reimagining. Prices down ever so slightly too.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Previous Review
27/7/2018
4
How crazy are the prices at Doughnut Time...$6.70 for a single dose of deep fried deliciousness... and a queue to boot. Despite all this I get off the train at Flinders instead of Southern Cross where I needed to be, joined the queue and paid my money. I generally don't over complicate my doughnuts and the slim shady deliciously simple with vanilla icing and m&m's. The icing on all are so thick. Today however I was needing a chocolate hit so opted for the Mars Bar, Flake scattering in a sea of chocolate icing. Yum.
No doubt incredibly bad for you but I was going to the footy and would probably have had hot chips and paid the same price for those so in my mind I have argued that this was the healthy option!
Ashleigh Michelle
The donuts are quite sweet, light and not too dense. The Hemsworth one was delicious. I liked how they had a good selection of Christmas donuts in December and they cater to vegans too. Overall, they're not the best donuts I've ever had but still great none the less.
Jack Peng
Taste worse than sugar on coles bun
Tayla Tastes
Not a whole lot of range, but what they did have looked incredible. I tried the 'Liam Hemsworthy' which was really good, especially for a vegan doughnut. Usually vegan doughnuts are quite dense and heavy, but this one was really nice and fluffy. Generous serving, great taste.
Rachael
Went in mid afternoon, selection was still sparse but plentiful. Great offerings, however was told that it would have been better fresher. extremely sweet.
Croissant Addict
Quick service and friendly staff! I got the Veruca Salt caramel doughnut. Loved the fluffiness of the doughnut and the salted caramel filling was not overwhelmingly sweet, which is a good sign. They also offer vegan options which is alwayd a plus!
Talitha Najmillah Sabtiari
Bought the It’s Always Gaytime, it has this caramel coat on the top, and it’s super sweet to my liking. Also the donut is really big and it’s worth the price (6$), so better be sharing it.
Lovefood
I interested in this store from youtube review. The vloggers looks really enjoyed their doughnuts and it looks pretty too, but it is too sweet for my taste. Doughnut texture soft and easy to bite.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I’m so glad this place never left despite them closing a few other stores. It’s literally one of the best donuts I’ve had.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I love how many different options there are. They always have new flavours and I love the fluffiness and the consistency of the donuts. It’s not too sweet so that the topping overpowers the donut - it’s just a right amount! Love them so much. Tried the peanut butter one and the nutella one and it was both so delicious.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: I know it can be a little too much in terms of sugar but it’s worth every bit of it.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: love coming back here as it’s so close by and easy access.
Couple days ago While I was in meblourne, I went to doughnut time after hearing some good review from friends and social media. All I can say it was so not dissapointing. I bought 4, but I sure do plan to get some more anytime soon.
Breakfast_Adventurers
😁😜🍩 Today I swung past @doughnut_time with the intention of buying a couple of the delicious flavours I saw available & to take some for the rest of the family to enjoy! This particular flavour is called "ZERO CHILL" which was sweet in all the right ways! Butterscotch Glaze topped w. Hershey's Kisses & Gluten Free Milk Chocolate Crumb
Suhujana
It is too sweet I didn’t manage to eat the whole doughnut. Doughnuts look better than how they taste. There are better desert options nearby.
Some Bunee Loves Food
This place was closed and then reopened but seemed like nothing had changed. Their use of doughnut names were hilarious. Eg. Liam hemsworthy, etc
Although I love sweets, these are way too sweet. It is full of glaze, then topped with chocolate. Eek.
Zainab A
Was excited to see that it re-opened. I loved the classic doughnut but the rest of the flavours I got were too sweet for my liking. If you have a massive sweet tooth, you would love these doughnuts.
I would also like to mention that their doughnuts are a bit more on the doughy side. If you’re not a fan of doughnuts with a lot of dough or a bread-like consistency, then you won’t like these.
Sweetoothbrunches
Heading back to one of my fav doughnut places after their reopening full of excitement I was highly underwhelmed. The doughnuts may be the same as the originals. However, the flavors aren't nearly as good as before with the dough tasting flavorless. Possibly due to a more healthier take than before. I'll definitely try again another time though.
3.5/5 rating
Let's hope it's only first few weeks and can regain that flavor from before because this sweetooth loves his doughnuts.
Leila
Pretty to look at. Taste wise, very very sweet (not that I’m complaining, I’ve got a huge sweet tooth). But honestly, it’s not nearly enough to justify the ridiculously steep prices.
Mari Carmen Navarro
I tried today these doughnuts because they reopened the store and it was a really bad experience. The doughnuts tasted like if they had been made more than 3 or 4 days ago and they are no cheap to have that so low quality. I will not buy them again.
Leon Bastian
I had the Liam Hemsworthy and I liked the Red Velvet doughnut it was something a bit different. A friend bought the netflix n chill one and we shared that we both enjoyed it.
Chloe Luccio
I had the Liam Hemsworthy doughnut here on DeGraves Street and I really liked the taste. The Red Velvet is soft, sweet and delicious and the chocolatey bits are to die for. Yum!
Rizka Natasya
The donuts are all looking pretty so I had such a high expectation. However, was quite disappointed after eating one bite because it was too sweet and didn't taste quite right. Ended up asking my friends to finish it with me but no one could really enjoy it 😂
Caitlin Maree
One of my favourite donut places! Absolutely delicious range of donuts. The different donuts are creative and inviting! The price is a bit steep but well worth it!
Anka
My fifth time in this hippie doughnut place. I have tried almost all of their doughnuts. I only love the infamous Nutella doughnut. Yet, I notice a decline of the quantity of Nutella filling for the past one year. Quite saddened because each doughnut costs minimum of $6. The other variety are mediocre. Not really much worth of $6-$8. It only looks nice in pictures. The quality is meh.
Brekkycakes
My doughnut cravings were getting so bad that I could finally justify paying $6.70 for a doughnut. Looking at the cute and playful exterior of the shop and its pretty display of doughnuts of all sorts of flavours, I was very excited to finally be able to try the much hyped Doughnut Time doughnuts.
I got the golden gaytime inspired doughnut which was covered in a milk chocolate glaze with the biscuit crumbs filled with honeycomb custard! However when I actually tried it, the doughnut itself was while soft, very doughy and lacked the chewiness which I was hoping for. The custard just lacked any sort of flavour, never mind the honeycomb, just almost tasted like water. On that, the doughnut itself was massive, which would have been good had I really enjoyed these but really, I was sick of them 2/3 of the way through. Overall, it was just super sweet and sugary, lacking any real flavour or texture :/ Perhaps the other flavours are better but for now I might give the other doughnut shops around a go before I come back!
Sometimes I think location really does influence perception. If I'd bought one of these in one of the original locations on the Gold Coast, I probably would have rated it ok. An expensive, glitzy, holiday treat that would be the content of a visually dazzling Instagram post.
But that's not where I am. I'm here in Melbourne, and I know where to get good donuts. Maybe not so pretty, but they deliver on taste. And that's what really counts, right?
So let's call these donuts what they are, extremely pretty, extremely overpriced, extremely average tasting sugar balls. The donuts themselves are extremely dry, they legitimately tasted like they had sat there for 48 hours (but apparently they're never older than 4 hours so go figure). I got a Liam Hemsworthy, and the icing was actually quite good. But the donut itself and the bits of brownie were ridiculously, unforgivably dry.
If you're in this area and you're desperate for a sweet treat, go get a waffle instead.
Baby Kitty
The donuts here looks better that it taste. If you stand outside the store and stare at their selection of donuts, you will be hypnotized and drawn in by the colours and flavors offered. However, these donuts are tough, lacking in flavor and very expensive. I've tried three flavors, 2 weren't great and only the Nutella flavored one stood out. Honestly not worth it.
Angel Khong
Pretty to look at, totally Insta-worthy, but way too thick and doughy to eat. Reminds me of 90s donuts before thinner airy ones like Krispy Kreme became popular.
Chloe Lower
Had the Nutella doughnut and it was insane, also got one for my little sister and she loved it. Queue was long but so worth it. Absolutely delicious!
Mel's
Pretty doughnut that for sure and they always have something special or limited edition on special day, the doughnut it self was ok but I believe there many places have better taste and better price
Flying Forward
I've followed these guys since their inception in Brisbane and expansion to other cities, so I can commend them on that - the power of social media, and good branding.
I think these doughnuts are just made for that - the Instagram factor.
I have run my own doughnut business as well, so I know what makes a good TASTING doughnut.
Doughnut Time doughnuts tend to be a bit thick and bready, with a layer of colourful icing. So you end up thinking...what did I just pay $6 for?
So many different varieties, but they are light on the target flavour.
Think about it this way - the doughnuts are made in a central location in the morning and distributed out to the shop windows and sit there all day, which is why they lose on taste and freshness.
Just do yourself a favour - maybe try it once but move on.
Simone
I hesitated before getting one of these bad boys because of the price. The "It's Always a Gay Time" doughnut was amazing. It was a little bit runny, but resembled a small cake. I really loved the texture of the dough. Perfect!
Good Food Good Mood
Love me some doughnut time and love it even more when there's a new flavour. Yesterday I tried the creme brûlée or creme da la creme as they call it which had a delicious toffee shard top. It doesn't knock down my ultimate faves Love at first Bite or Chris Hemsworth but lovers of custard will definitely be a fan of this one. Also awesome that they are opened until 11pm every day of the week to ensure your late night sugary snacks
Emilie
The quirky little shopfront adds a modern touch to Degraves Street in Melbourne's CBD. With both the classics and more eclectic flavours on offer. The doughnuts are not for the faint-hearted. These desserts are overflowing at the seams with Nutella, salted caramel, jam, chocolates, confectionaries and even bacon!
The may be a tad overpriced, but ultimately worth it!
Kim
Really yummy vegan donuts. The perez one is really nice. Good quick service. Only wish there were more vegan options to choose from/just make them all vegan so everyone can eat them all.
George David Michaelides
Straight off the mark losing points with $6.70 for a doughnut.
Make them two thirds of the size and charge $3.50 each!!!
These look great in the window very inviting, but dont judge a doughnut by its skin.
These are sickly sweet and so large that you could cut them as a cake at a 1 year olds birthday party.
Also points are lost here as the doughnuts aren't made fresh on site that should be an absolute priority ala Daniels Doughnuts
Just Another Foodie
Ordered the Golden Gaytime as I really like the ice cream version but it was quite disappointing. First it was really sickly sweet, I have a sweet tooth but it was too much for my liking. Secondly, price is a bit a steep at $6.70 per doughnut. I think I expected too much from their visually appealing window display.
Lisa Reynolds
I'm a lover for donuts, but gosh the size of these is ridiculous. Definitely one for sharing, the sugar content surely is 100% the names are very punny, and love at first bite has got to be the winner, Nutella all the way.
Masha
Very overrated - of all my donuts ventures (and there have been many, as I never pass up the opportunity to consume one should it be within reach) these just didn't make the cut.
In flavor they are comparable to basic supermarket donuts, glamorized by decorative icing. Definitely not worth going out of your way for.
Perry
Haven't had donuts for years. I'm not that kind into it but heard this place is nice so give a shot. As I'm lactose free so I've ordered vegan one which is called get ready to crumble. Caramel glazed with pecans crumble, filling with apple and cinnamon. I'd say I really like it, not so sweet which I could accept it. I like cinnamon as well><
Julia Liow
ordered the 'get ready to crumble', which consisted of vegan caramel glaze, filled with apple & cinnamon and topped with a pecan crumb! the size was MASSIVE, which probably contributed to why it was SO expensive ($6.70 for a donut calm down). so i recommend for you to share one with a mate so it's half the price, plus you may not even be able to finish one all to yourself anyway (i had trouble getting through it & i eat a lot). taste wise - it was alright. the glaze was delicious, however the donut itself tasted plain. having said that, it was overall good considering it was vegan
Raph M
I'm by no means a doughnut expert but I just love Doughnut Time's branding. A huge colourful doughnut with pastel colours. What's not to like. It's catching, inviting and appetising!
The doughnut themselves are not bad either. There were heaps of choices to choose form and they are looked and sounded delicious. The Apple Crumble doughnut was pretty damn good!
Just Jamie
Looks can be Deceiving
This place looks great and when i First visited there was a Que, now its often empty. The window displays look amazing and they really sell the products, Funky and different doughnuts. However biting in to them they tastes a big doughy and the fillings do not help. On this occasion i had an Oreo and it was not enjoyable.
There are so many other places across Melbourne who do Doughnuts so much better so i probably wont be back.
Restaurant Type: Casual / Doughnut
Lorraine
I honestly had such high hopes for these doughnuts especially with the long queues and awesome mint green storefront and neon lights. Rows upon rows of doughnuts behind the window had me drooling. Presentation is a solid 10/10. Taste-wise a 6/10. For a sweet-tooth like myself, the doughnuts were way too sickly sweet and doughy. Would pay for a pic but not for a bite.
LilMac
Doughnuts are delicious but over priced at $6.70 for one.
The Vegan doughnuts are a lot tastier then the 'standard'.
Vegan Fox = Best flavour
Get your hands on that one if you can.
They do from time to time have limited addition doughnuts for special events.
Would be good to see a Vegan limited addition one in the future!
Yum🍩 yum🍩 yum🍩 yum🍩 yum🍩 yum🍩. This should just be the review 😂😂😂. Ordered the Oh My Lorde with passionfruit and vanilla glaze 😍 topped with meringue and dried freeze strawberries 🍓. It all worked perfectly and tasted delicious as 😙
A big star that shines bright like the Great Windsor Star (there is also a branch of this franchise in Windsor).
Personally not the biggest fan of Doughnut Time's branding at their physical store sites. There is something about it that has always put me off visiting (don't like the green? or just the "gourmet donut" vibe of the whole place that is a bit played out).
Can attest that this CBD outlet is bustling. It is as though every innocent passersby seem to magically turn into a Doughnuyt Time customer as soon as they step onto Degraves St. There is always a little queue, nothing major though.
The food? I can attest to delivery, lets you skip the Degraves St environment. Doughnuts deliver in mint condition.
Ate: the OG, Slim Shady (haha), a Veruca Salt, and 'Oh My Lorde' (donut created for the NZ pop singer Lorde). A musical theme to this order.
BUT if you are a tourist and you are looking for good food in the CBD, go here. Degraves St is very cool for tourists (not an insult, just an observation, I loved this place as a tourist before I moved here). You will be tasting a Melbourne icon (BUT we can't claim it; remember that this chain, like many of Australia's best, started in QLD).
Thanks Doughnut Time! Next time my watch says "doughnut time" I will give you a call
Maidtomunch
The donuts at Doughnut Time are always changing, so you have a great excuse to revisit regularly (which is dangerous!) The venue for the Doughnut Time in the CBD is very conveniently placed close to Flinders Station, so you can walk across the road and get a snack immediately. The food itself is delicious, and I have been happy with every donut I have tried. Unfortunately this venue doesn't have a single place to sit down, so you have to walk around with your donut or wait until you get to the train. This is a huge oversight, as I know I love to sit and relax while eating.
What To Eat By @soniadisha
IT IS THE TIME FOR A DOUGHNUT!
Tried a different flavor of Doughnut Time, and I was not surprise that it would be the usual too-sweet flavor. But I still enjoy it, was just trying it for fun honestly, and how cute it was to be taken picture of! Lol. This doughnut time stall are also very cute, surrounded with cute walls and stalls, which makes it interesting for my first time visiting the place.
It is very sweet however, I tried the mars doughnut, very very caramelized and you can taste the whole mars bars in one bite of the doughnut. Would I repurchase? Maybe not, because I couldn't stand the sweetness.
Rate: 3
Not too bad for choosing buy doughnut from this shop, tastes was good but price is a bit over. Staff was delight, friendly. I bought ' It's always a Gay time and Love at first bite ' was nice and a bit too sweet (prefer It's always a Gay time)
The doughnuts here are really nice but $6.70 for one doughnut is ridiculous! I was in Melbourne for a vacation so that was the only reason I could mentally be okay with paying that much for a doughnut because you don't want to think about money too much when you're on a holiday but in terms of taste, the doughnut that I tried from this Doughnut time stand was really well made and my partner enjoyed it too!
Winter
Very misleading photos on their profile, definitely doesn't look like that. Very limited range, very average. Same as eating plain sugar nothing special for a rip off price.
Efficient service with generous decorated doughnuts sporting fun names!
We ordered the:
- Get Ready to Crumble (apple pie)
- The Milo Cyrus (milo w/ Milo custard)
- Slim Shady (original glaze with MnMs)
- Love at First Bite (nutellaaaaaa)
Pretty tasty doughnuts although I prefer them a bit smaller and my fave jam filled was a no show! Overall, worth a try if down Degraves and have a sweet craving :)
Saza_Lives_To_Eat
I thought for the price they would have to be the best, super disappointed! $30 for 6 overly sweet, artificial tasting doughy doughnuts. Felt ripped off! They leave a greasy film in your mouth 😩 even kk's are better.
Ankit Agnish
Hidden in the Degraves St. 2 minutes walk from Flinders St. station. This shop has some amazing mouthwatering donuts. I say one is enough for you. They are too big and sumptuous. Loved it.
They had one made just for Dustin Martin 🤣 #dustinator
Split The Bill
Wanted to check out all the hype.
The doughnuts were a bit too doughy for me. I got the Gaytime but found the filling a bit over the top and too sweet personally.
FoodieAboutTown
If you are going to cheat – you should damn well do it right and go and get a box of Doughnut Time doughnuts!. These are no ordinary doughnuts, they are all especially named and designed to please! The window on De Graves Street is always crowded with people trying to work out what they are going to partake in, here’s just a few of the latest – what would you choose?;
Misha
Every time I am in Melbourne, these guys are on the agenda. That Veruca Salt doughnut is seriously what I live for when I am craving something sweet. I have tried their other doughnuts, and nothing to me stands out as much as the Vercua. The Vegan Fox is also up there for me 🍩
Alana C
As far as doughnuts go I don't think they get better than this??? Low rating on here is misleading. If you want a good, sweet doughnut then get down here.
E
Again, just for the record...not a huge doughnut fan but I had to make an expectation when I came across this place ! The donuts are beautifully presented. I prefer the plain tasting doughnuts so I got the glazed flavour. I like how it's bigger than your usual sized doughnuts but at a price of $6+, one is enough.
Sybarite
Curious about the very low rating and wanting to compare to the other donut stores that Perth doesn't have, we went for the red velvet and the raspberry coconut. Funky flavour options, average donuts and average franchise-esque service. Very very sweet toppings and not on the Must Return To list.
FoodieCCC
Had the peanut butter milk shake, was amazing! The mini donut on top was as good as the regular-priced donuts. Also had a piece of flake chocolate on top, lovely.
Lamington donut was excellent as well.
Live_in_melbourne
Enjoyed their Nutella one very much. It was divine! Never had so much nutella filling in one donut!! The rest I had were not that outstanding but still quite delicious.
ALWAYS HUNGRY
Standard doughnut with fancy toppings and fillings as the flavours. 25% doughnut and about 75% sugar. It was sickly sweet for me, but if you want death by sugar this is your jam.
(Monday 10/10/2016)
Doughnuts were nice, didn't have much expectation. Partner bought it for guilty pleasure.
Ordered the Sia Later (Red Velvet) and The Cookie Monster for take away.
Texture was alright.
The size were reasonably big and the fillings for the Cookie Monsters was the highlight for me.
Although, personally I think it might be a little bit sweeter, but am not complaining. Haha
Was surprised that the red velvet is a vegan option, absolutely amazed by it.
Will come back for more and try out some other
After seeing lots of hype on Instagram, we decided to try some doughnuts from Doughnut Time. We are both serious fans of both Nutella and cookies and cream, so it was an obvious choice for us to try their ‘Love at First Bite’ and ‘The Cookie Monster’ doughnuts to start with. We went to their Degraves Street location in the CBD, and the staff member who served us there was friendly.
‘Love at First Bite’ did not disappoint. It had a really generous amount of Nutella inside, and the doughnut itself was lovely and soft. ‘The Cookie Monster’ was also tasty. The glaze was sweet, the doughnut was soft and the filling was very decadent. Both doughnuts were decent sized too.
Despite their great taste, we believe $6.00 per doughnut is a little steep as some other competitors have similar doughnuts of great quality for a more reasonable price. Give them a go if you are a doughnut fan!
Gee
I'm fairly new to the whole donut revolution, but I must say I enjoyed this more than Bistro Morgan or Short Round. I had the salted caramel and it hit the spot although call me old fashioned, but isn't $6 for a takeaway donut a little steep?
Annie Bananie
The shop is down a nice side lane and all the doughnuts look vibrant and great but it wasn't amazing. Slightly too sweet like straight sugar sweet not good ingredients. The dough was also a bit too tough
Spirited Stardust
Unlike the Fitzroy store, which had fresh and softly warm delicious donuts, we went here at 1pm & found the donuts were dry and not very pleasant
Eat Well
the two vegan doughnuts i had are amazing, hope you can increase the variety of vegan donuts available each day.. im not vegan anymore but i appreciate the option which i always still take
Mel
Unfortunately like many of the other reviews, these doughnuts are too sweet to say the least. They look lovely but are just overpowering on the confectionary flavour.
Sasa
Cost twice as much as KrispyKreme, however tastes half as good. 1.5 rating goes to the presentation effort, 0.5 goes to the taste...much need to be improved.
Claire Bakker
We had to wait ages for these donuts and when we got them they were very dry and overly sweet. Staff were nice but nothing else would compel me to come back and try the other flavours.
Bopnbeep
Large and doughy is what you get, not the fluffy type. Colourful creations draw in the crowds but I'm not sold. Doughnuts aren't oily which is a positive but they are a bit dense and overpriced. The sia later was the better one, the veruca salt had way too much filling it was like eating blobs of caramel with more sugar. Won't be back in a hurry.
Onara
Vile was my thought during the first bite
Cheap would be my description of the ingredients
Overrated is my general impression
Massive doughy lumps containing supersweet goop, they remind me of the frozen jam donuts my Mum got at Franklins in the 1970s
I bought two from Doughnut Time. And threw most of both of them away
Cassidy & Sneakers
Cassidy – considering this place always gets a mention on the top-ten lists for doughnuts in Melbourne, I’d been keen to try them for a while. Are they good for Instagram? Yes. Do they actually taste any good? No, not at all. Out of a six pack I only tried half of two of them, being a strawberry one and a crème brulee one, and had no desire to go on. There was a weird after taste in the icing, the crème brulee tasted burnt and the dough is simply not very good. They are really thick and very dry. The cost is exorbitant for what you get and the quality – in comparison, you can buy about 100 doughnuts from the supermarket that are actually edible. Hats off to these guys for being exceptional at marketing to be so ‘popular’, but the reviews on here speak for themselves – overpriced and inedible. I won’t be getting these again.
Sneakers – As above, we got a box of six doughnuts. I tried a blueberry centred doughnut which was average at best. It had a tasty thick and chunky filling, but that’s where it all ended. The doughnut left a strange unpleasant taste in my mouth after eating, so I didn’t bother to try anymore. The dough is super dry. It’s not often we throw away three whole ‘high quality’ doughnuts…it’s quite sad really. They don’t travel well either – by the time we got the box home there was icing leaking out the bottom of the box all over our car seat. I seriously wouldn’t bother.
Food overall – 2/10
Barbiecutie
The dough on these donuts is way too thick and chewy! I find the varieties I've had to be very sugary but without a lot of actual flavour. The Macha Made In Heaven (no longer available) was an exception as the flavour was a little lighter and more layered. The Vegan Fox isn't terrible, but the chocolate tastes a little strange - like chocolate icing from an out-of-the-box cake mix. I got the Berry Seinfeld last night and found the jelly filling tasted terrible, akin to cheap, sickly sweet raspberry jam. It had an awful aftertaste. I'd be disappointed if this had been presented to me as a cheap donut made for kiddies and it's even less excusable as a fancy $6 donut, especially in comparison with fantastic (not to mention cheaper) options in Melbourne. I think people are mostly paying for the cute VM and icing designs.
I walked past here today and I was drawn in by the delicious looking doughnuts. I was drawn to the crème brûlée flavour because I'm not allowed to have chocolate and this one looked good. The girl working there seemed nice enough. When I ate this doughnut I found the dough to be a bit more thick and doughy then the average doughnut. It had heaps of custard inside and it was really thick I thought maybe too thick but maybe if it was thinner it would be messy. The caramel on top was ok nothing to write home about. I actually preferred Krispy Kreme to this because they're more fluffy which is sad because I find Krispy Kreme doughnuts have a lot of artificial tasting flavours. Doughnut time needs to do some work to improve the dough.
I forgot that they were $6 each, totally not worth the price
When I saw on Instagram that Doughnut Time, of the delightful Vegan Fox doughnuts, was offering a new flavour with an equally fun name, I couldn’t help but stop by. The Melon Degeneres (get it?) ($6) is exactly what it sounds like – a vibrant doughnut iced with a watermelon flavour and dotted with cacao nibs. We lined up at the cute Degraves Street shopfront, eyeing off all of the delicious, temption options – but no, we stuck to the mission. We actually carried this one around for a bit before eating, which may account for the oozy nature of the icing by the time we got around to eating it. The main feature of these doughnuts is that the doughnut itself is light, delicious, and not oily at all. This flavour was no exception to that rule, the icing
The service is great but you have to come later in the day if you don't like lines. The doughnuts are amazing and the poke-ball one is delicious because it is filled with nutella. They accidentally gave us the wrong doughnut and they let us keep it and were quick to give us the right one. The only thing I can say is that it is a bit pricey but overall very nice.
Tried the vegan options - Vegan fox and Match. Both were delicious and great to see some vegan donut options in the CBD! Friendly staff as well.
Sugar craving after lunch drew us to this place, we tried the nutella (good), caramel (ok), creme brulee (meh) but the most boring looking of them - pistachio was the absolute highlight. Some interesting flavours overall and even though i'm generally not big doughnuts, this place is worth a try.
Meh. Forget about this place. The doughnut was pricey (yes it's big-ish) but it didn't taste any good. Dough was plain and dry. Nutella is Nutella, can't fault it. I'm such a sweet tooth and I gave it to my partner after a bite. That's how bad it was. Plenty of other good donut options in the city.
I regret eating the doughnut. It was TOO big. The dough was a bit tough & chewy & dense. Not light and fluffy as it should be and as I'd hoped. Had the Nutella and the jam doughnuts & went halvies with my handsome husband. The doughnuts were generously filled, and should be for the price. But the ample filling was not enough to redeem the situation and I felt quite ill by the end of the exercise. If you're after a gourmet sweet treat, I'd recommend ditching the doughies & crossing the road to the little cupcakes. Cross over now!!!!
The four stars is for that hot chocolate. Oh my god. It was that good. Service was mediocre. Besides that the Aero donut was terrible and bland.
God Damn! Melbourne's doughnut game has been all shook up! I've eaten some damn good examples of these circular creations (Voodoo donuts anyone?) and I'd put what Doughnut Time is offering up against the best of them. Usually when somewhere offers up every topping under the sun, they're usually covering up a less than spectacular dough which is not the case here. Light, fluffy and not overly-sweet, straight-up the dough ticks all the boxes. Went with the OG to test the waters and got hooked up with free Creme de la Creme, WHO DOES THAT?! Both nailed it and can't wait to get back
Some really fun creative flavour concepts drew me in, however the actual dough is nothing to write home about: the funky toppings hide nothing but plain, bland, white dough. Was impressed by the range of flavours that catered for various dietary requirements (the green matcha one is vegan, and pretty damn good in dairy/egg free standards!).
The Swine
The Swine loves donuts so when he went by Degraves Street he made a quick pitstop to try the much hyped Doughnut Time. Well this place certainly is still popular because - late in the arvo, stocks were very low. Oh dear - The Swine ended up with sloppy seconds - given he got here and in the door the Swine took what he could get. You Fool Swine - Fool!! Remarkably Doughnut Time wasn't anything amazing. Yes big on sweetness and sugar but the Swine thinks the enemy in KK may do it better. Meh - The Swine wont be back. Pigzzz Aaaarse!!
Not my favourite since i prefer light and fluffy donuts, their donuts are huge and chewy and look very pretty.
Okayyyyy. How could you resist these donuts with great taste and super duper cute presentation? I ordered the Ferrero and Smores donuts and I had no regret!
I have tried several flavors these days when i passed by. I love the salty chocolate best. It tastes smooth and the mixture of salty and sweet taste is fabulous.
The marketing and packaging, colours and presentation fantastic. but the doughnuts are stale! For the price they should be fresh. I haven't had a doughnut in years and thought these would be worth the $6 price tag for one. Unfortunately you can't re-sell 2 day old doughnuts they just don't taste the same.
Kam
The doughnuts do "look" amazing, until you try one and it's just pure sugar, couldn't even finish the 4 we bought.
Not worth waiting in the queue or the money.
Probably not visiting again, I'd rather get something from Walker's.
Richard Tom
Average doughnut, expected a lot more, doughnut was extremely sweet and one is more than enough, too much sugar and dough is dry at times. Expensive for what you get.
What a dissapointment!
I have truely never had such a bad donut in my life! It was hard, super sweet, as the sugar had crystallized, and tasted like it had been on the shelf for more than a week!
No doubt they have a great variety, but whats the point!? It would be better if they serve a single donut that tastes good!
MSY123
Just 'WOW'.
Doughnut Time is the continuum of the 'freak shake' phenomena, sugar shock foods that you regret after the first few bites.
Peak time at this place is surprising, as basically the line-up is for over glamorised Doughnuts.
Give it a try, but don't bite into the hype.
They all taste sweet and pretty much the same...the different flavours are not unique and distinctive enough. There are many other places with much better donuts.
Thought I'd give this doughnut shop a try. You see many people walking around with several small boxes. Realised that they don't offer bags, and one doughnut fits per box. Smart marketing as it forces customers to walk around advertising the shop as there is no place to sit down. Creative names. YES. Flavour. meh.. The bacon maple syrup was worth a try but felt cheated with the lack of flavour of the icing/topping and the bland tasting dough. There wasn't a good ratio. At $6 a pop, it's safe to say, try once.. but never again.
I am a fan of doughnuts and especially ones that are a little quirky and different which is what I like about doughnut time! I especially enjoyed the Nutella one however I couldn't finish it all as there was perhaps a little too much Nutella that it became sickly.. To be honest they're a bit pricy at approximately $6 per doughnut but definitely worth a try at least once!
I'm not a donut person unless it is fresh, hot and simple. There were a lot of fancy ones here, gave in to my friend's urge to share, wasn't anything i didn't expect. Pretty neutral experience and unexciting.
