This small restaurant in the Mid City arcade has such a great menu at a very good price! The sashimi was delicious, the bento box was a great dinner size and the beef dish was so good. There’s one large table for big groups and a smaller tables of 4. The staff were lovely and service was quick. They take efpos and offer take away containers at a very small charge (50c)
Would definitely go back!
J’s score 3.75 stars. J had a solo lunch here on Tue 10th Sept. Lovely smiling staff, nice and quiet acoustics. Clean and non-bustley. Glass of water brought over on arrival and refilled later.
She had the Deluxe Bento Fried Eggplant set ($15.80) - fair value for quality.
Miso eggplant very nice, soft and silky.
Wakame salad nice, generous serve.
Red and white cabbage (Chuka) salad (w mayo and a little bit of pickled radish cubes) – nice.
Vegie tempura and dipping sauce with 2 sweet potato, 2 pumpkin, 1 eggplant - all nice, light crisp batter.
Green salad, rice – both ok.
Miso soup had nice stock with spring onions and tofu cubes - rich and flavoursome.
This is the third time J has been here and has enjoyed it each time – I’ll have to join her next time...
Here we have the Zaru soba with tempura and Tama unadon. Food was delicious and was affordable. The eel fried rice had a lot of flavours and soba noodles was cooked well. Friendly service and will definitely come back!
Food - Came here for dinner using Zomato Gold and we had the sliced beef on rice and also seafood butter fried rice. My partner liked the beef and it was tasty. I liked my fried rice and you could see pieces of salmon in it with roe topping.
Service - The waitress who served us was friendly and explained which dishes were allowed under Zomato Gold. A bit disappointed that the bento boxes were not included but there were many other options to choose from.
Ambience - A cute little eatery situated in Midcity and had Japanese influenced decor. Did feel like you could pass being in Japan while in there.
Overall, it was a good experience.

Great food for how cheap it was! We had the Takoyaki balls, the crab croquettes, prawn maki and california maki roll and more. All were great. Only down fall would be the restaurant didn't look appealing. If it wasn't recommended to us in the first place it's not somewhere I would have thought to go to.
Fantastic attentive service, large menu without being too overwhelming for kitchen staff, and the quality of the food coming out was fantastic. Delicious. Some the of the sushi wasn’t well cut, but the flavour and presentation made up for it. Unfortunately the only photo I have of the food are empty plates, since it was too yummy to stop and take photos before being eaten.
Highly recommended.
Tucked away in the heart of Chinatown is Kaneda Sushi in Mid City Arcade. They’ve got a varied and affordable Japanese menu. Cosy and cramped Kaneda is..
Another bookmark ticked off the list, I went here recently with a friend. A great menu with a lot to choose from.
We decided to get a selection of things to try, I loved the chicken katsu curry and the sushi rolls were nice. The service was good with attentive staff.
In my opinion not a bad place as some reviewers have suggested, you are paying for the quality you get. I would happily come back if I was in the area.
Very delicious, strongly recommended, friendly staff. Nice environment, well presented. I like it and enjoy the food and convenience and quick service .
This place is a bit of an institution and has been around for as long as I can remember. The quality has been consistently good over the years so today I brought another three friends. We placed our orders and settled back in anticipation.
The first to arrive was the Ebi Fried set. This successfully whet our appetite and I'm told it tasted as good as it looked. The Fried Pork Cutlet set was the next to arrive and that friend descended into silence - a sign that it was good. The Rainbow Roll and Takoyaki (octopus balls) lived up to expectations and everyone was happily enjoying their meals.
We were explaining Chirashi as "scattered" sushi to a couple of friends but mine arrived beautifully arranged with salmon sashimi, grilled eel, prawn, tomago egg, seaweed salad and tobiko fish roe covering a bed of vinegared rice. The fresh ingredients perfectly harmonised in flavour and texture, with the overall combination suggesting a hint of sweetness.
Kaneda is in an outdated looking arcade and the set up is simple but functional. Service is friendly and helpful but I wouldn't describe it as speedy. The dishes are quite reasonably priced and once again we left feeling satisfied.
I've been coming here for over 10 years, mostly during lunch with colleagues for their bento boxes. You get a choice of many variations and it always hits the spot as you get a little bit of everything. So when they contacted me to pop over for a meal, I already knew what to expect. I think they've revamped the place with newer tables and brighter lighting.
We order a couple of small dishes to start off. Their hotate butter (grilled scallops with garlic butter sauce) was so good, it was meaty and rich and was devoured in seconds. I went as far as to give the salad a swim in that sauce! We also got a plate of gyu tan (grilled ox tongue) which was sliced thin and had a bit of chew to it which released nice beefy flavours. It was paired with some sort of fermented chilli sauce.
We got the assorted sushi and sashimi which came beautifully presented on a wooden board. The slices of sashimi were very clean, tuna and salmon are predictable favourites and the mackerel had a stronger oily taste. The nigiri you'd say was okay, this isn't your fine dining destination and should not fall into the same category. The mock crab meat and tamago would be my least favourite of the bunch.
Onto the rice bowls, or should I say comfort food in a bowl. I don't remember the last time I had a katsudon and this hit my cravings. The pork cutlet had soaked up all that sauce with the egg melding it all together, it kept me digging back in. My friend had their tamagyudon which was sliced beef and vegetables topped with a raw egg yolk. I had a spoonful, delicious and creamy from the yolk. He pretty much messaged me the next day and told me he was still thinking about it.
Solid Japanese eatery that has kept much of its menu the same over the past decade. They aren't trying to do anything new and are just doing what they do best. Big thank you to the team for looking after us.
Been coming here for ages and never left without a smile on my face. Owners have changed, and since then been twice - first time was less than stellar, with communication issues, long wait times despite being the only ones there, and missing items. (Food still delicious.)
HOWEVER, today was amazing. Everything so fresh. Rice and sushi amazing. Tofu so tasty. Very very attentive, kind & quick service. I’m hoping it stays this way!
Ordered🍙: pork set bento, soft shell crab rolls and sashimi
LIT! ⭐️: one of the things that my boyfriend and I love from an Asian restaurant is good rice. And Kaneda’s rice for the sushi and the bento was on point- small but soo fluffy, but it wasn’t sticky. It was the perfect texture so we didn’t even mind if the meat to rice ratio was a bit off. The sashimi was very fresh too.
NOT SO LIT: small and tight decor but great for a quick lunch.
Thanks for having us! X
Prices are great and the food is very well done too. Was extremely surprised to discover this place tucked at the back end of Midcity Arcade but have been coming back ever since.
While there is no dish that has been a standout since going, their handrolls and sushi rolls are very tasty and well-made (for the price). Their udon noodle soup (tempura) comes with the tempura on the side to prevent it from being soggy which is another plus ! Solid and consistently good food.
4.5
Don't judge a restaurant by its Instagram page. There's no hype surrounding Kaneda, but they are quietly dishing out some of the most delicious no-frills Japanese food in Melbourne. Communication in English with some of the staffs may be a bit restrictive, but should not pose a major problem.
A comprehensive menu meant that my partner and I had a bit of hard time deciding what to order but we finally settled on the Tempura Bento Box and Gyutan Don. On the recommendation of the lovely owner Kelly, we also ordered the Tempura Sushi and the salmon sashimi.
The salmon sashimi came highly recommended as the salmon had been freshly procured that day, and what a delight it was! Luxurious and smooth in my mouth would be the best way to describe them.
The Tempura Sushi was a unique take on the common sushi roll. This version was flash-fried in tempura batter, resulting in a wonderfully crunchy outer layer of seaweed. The salmon, unagi and avo wrapped within was again super fresh, with a rich and buttery-like texture. The novelty soon wear off though if you don't eat this quick, as the crispy seaweed turns into soggy seaweed and it becomes just another roll.
Both the Tempura Bento Box and Gyutan Don excelled in execution and taste. The tempura were fried to perfection, and so was the chicken kaarage that came as a side in the bento box. The ox tongue was so thinly-sliced, it melt in my mouth, but yet it retained so much flavour.
Kaneda is definitely a dark house in Melbourne's dining scene, and with such affordable prices, Kaneda really deserves to be called a hidden gem.
Thank you to Kelly for the invite, and for fussing over us like a mother hen.

Ordered:
🥙 Korokke: deep fried creamy potato cake with crab meat ($7.80)
🍜 Tenzaru Soba: tempura with cold buckwheat noodle with traditionally prepared sauce ($14.80)
🍣 Unagi maki (8 pcs): grilled eel sushi ($12.50)
🐟 Assorted sashimi (9 pcs): $17.00
Review:
So Kaneda didn't do all the food perfectly. Would strongly avoid the unagi maki and assorted sashimi. Too much rice for the unagi maki that you couldn't taste the eel. The sashimi was not as fresh as I've had it at other places.
However, for the tenzaru soba and korokke - I find myself thinking about them...
It's a quiet intimate place, well lit, where you can have good dinner conversations.
The interior is cute with lots of things. I can only hope Japan will be like this restaurant!

When I was craving some cold buckwheat noodles, Kaneda delivered.
Ordered:
🍜 Tenzaru Soba: Tempura with Cold Buckwheat Noodles with traditionally prepared sauce ($14.80)
Review:
Absolutely delicious and prepared just how I imagined. With a separate dipping flavourful soup, there's something satisfying about going through the motions in your own meal.
A dip in the soup, taking a bite of the tempura, and somehow it makes you feel complete.
Service was a little touch and go - they were diligent in taking our orders but we didn't see them much for the rest of the meal. However, seeing as Kaneda is a small restaurant, flagging their attention isn't too hard.
I have to give a shoutout to the menu cover - needlessly glamorous, it was fun to feel the rigged texture. It was even more fun to look at when the quality of the menu inside was much more lacklustre in comparison.
We were lucky enough to be invited to Kaneda. It’s a cheap and cheerful Japanese cafe with a great range of bento boxes and other dishes. I tried the sushi/sashimi bento box and my companion had the tempura box. You get the selected food plus a range of other pieces. In the tempura set, for example, you receive a California roll, fried chicken, spring roll, green salad, miso soup and rice. We also shared five pieces of crumbed prawn, the ebi fry. In addition, we had curry korokke. The food was tasty and delivered really well for lunch. No delays either. The food came out swiftly and efficiently, critical when you’re concerned about elapsing time and getting back to the wonders of the workplace.
Kaneda is a great find tucked away in the Mid City Arcade. It is highly recommended.
The food tasted amazing and is very affordable for the proportions that are given. There was fast and friendly service and the menu was super huge to pick from. I recommend the curry here too!!
Kaneda situated inside midcity arcade in the heart of Chinatown. It's a boutique japanese sushi restaurant.
They offers a good mixture of different type of traditional japanese dishes. We ordered chicken teppanyaki set with miso soup and green tea ice cream and entree with assorted sushi and soft shell crab roll. It's all beautiful done. I enjoyed it
I was invited to Kaneda Japanese Restaurant to try their food. I went on a Sunday afternoon at lunchtime. The restaurant was half-filled and very clean. A friendly waitress came to greet us immediately upon entering the place and we were seated quickly. We ordered a tenzaru soba, a king fish neck/collar and a Kaneda house special sushi and sashimi to share. The tempura was crispy and well fried - the prawn was bursty and I could tell the oil that was used to fry the tempura was clean based on the colour of the batter. The soba was nice and cold and refreshing on a hot day. The kingfish neck was cooked to perfection - the meat was tendet and flaking off the bone. The sashimi was very fresh and the sushi was skillfully made. The only improvement I would suggest is that the rice was a little softer and had more moisture than it should have had. Otherwise the temperature of the rice was body temperature which was good. A good mid-price range Japanese restaurant in Melbourne. Thank you Kaneda for the invite!
Kaneda Japanese restaurant in Chinatown. It is a boutique izakaya style restaurant and located in the Midcity Chinatown. Sushi is nice and especially the deluxe sushi and sashimi platter is nice and generously served.
This place is nice and cozy. It’s always packed and full of customers no matter what time of the day. Love having their bento boxes and complimentary drinks.
Had the most awesome japanese food here. Always the jaoanese pick in the cbd. The sashimi was fresh staff were polite and food was well priced.
I haven't been here for ages. The first time I came here I was impressed with their food and recently I decided to have a meal here again. I ordered pork katsudon and the taste was as good as what I remembered a long time ago. Though it wasn't all rosy. The meat was a bit tough and I recalled it was somehow tough before too. With many Japanese restaurants nowadays in the CBD, the competition is there, and it's good. This restaurant stays standing, so they must have done something right
As a uni student (years ago), I would go to Kaneda for a cheap and yummy meal! Flash forward to today and I’m still going to it for their reasonably priced meals!
Their bento box was always a deal breaker with a main, fried chicken, salad and sushi/tempura!
Their individual dishes were pretty good as well! My favorites were the oyako don and tofu curry which were both very tasty! 😋
Their sushi rolls were consistently fresh and kept me coming back for more!
Overall, Kaneda has never disappointed and I would go back again and again for it! 👍
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kaneda is open again, and this time the restaurant is much brighter compared to before. Tables were arranged more tightly together, but it's cosy.
We ordered the sushi platter for two, and it looked amazing. It took them a while to make it, but given that it takes time to roll and actually make the sushi, we did not mind waiting at all. The sashimi tasted very fresh and had no "fishy" stench at all. The nigiri and and assorted sushi rolls were satisfying.
Very fresh sushi, excellent staff, and cheap bento boxes. Definitely one of my go-to restaurants in the CBD.
New renovation!! Great taste as usual!!! Love Flamed Chirashi Sushi. Always my favorite. And Spicy Gyu Don!! Service there is always nice and prompt. Btw they serve wines and sakes now. Can’t say no to plum wines!!
One of my favourite Japanese places in the city. This little hidden gem is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of China Town. The food is decent priced for the quality and the staff are very friendly! Their bento box deals are amazing, you’ll be stuffed with goodness
I really like Kaneda.
It's cosy, the staff are efficient, attentive and very friendly. I've never felt rushed or pressured to finish up my meals here, making it a go-to when I want a simple and casual dinner.
They have a heap of items on their menu and the bento boxes are decent and reasonably priced.
For some reason I've always managed to end up here with friends who don't eat raw food, so have never tried the sashimi and can't comment on it. What I can say though, is that their scallops are perfectly cooked. Every time. Large, sweet, and melt in your mouth perfect. If I could eat them every day I would! I also enjoy the nasu dengaku - the miso is slightly sweeter than other places but otherwise the eggplant is grilled evenly through.
Scrolled around Melbourne cbd and then in the end decided to try this. I thought my bento box was cheap, affordable and nice. Definitely recommend this to others who like nice Japanese food :)
Order a bento set, sashimi and udon. Husband love the udon so much. But I felt the bento set and salmon just so so. But consider the price, this should be alright.
Loved this little Japanese restaurant. Very friendly and approachable staff, amazing food! Felt like we were dining in one of the small places in Kyoto. Looking forward to go back and try rest of the menu.
Having been to Kaneda before after a day trip out to the Mornington Peninsula hotsprings, we remember feeling a sense of achievement and accomplishment having eaten a well deserved Sushi meal. With these positive thoughts at the backdrop of our thoughts, we returned to Kaneda after nearly a year and here is what we have to say.
The restaurant appeared to change it's internal decor and it looked even a bit smaller. Regardless service was prompt but bare in mind this is a cash only establishment... Much like many other Asian cuisine places. We ordered the soft shell crab roll, spicy salmon, terriyaki Don and Sashimi. Everything was good and we enjoyed it but it wasn't spectacular. There are much better places we have found for the same price with much more memorable food however this should not take away the taste and flavour here. It is authentic by any measure and it is good, just not GREAT or worth returning to.
Come here for a nice sushi or Japanese fix, however there are much better options- albeit at a higher price point.
Food: 3.75/5
Service: 3/5
Ambience: 3/5
Value: 3/5
Overall: 3.5/5
Been going here for years and it never disappoints! Not your fanciest Japanese restaurant but amazing for a quick lunch or casual dinner. Love it.
A really nice Japanese restaurant with tonnes of options!! You will be spoilt for choice. Neither too expensive and the service is tops. I felt welcomed, was looked after well and was also assisted in selecting the dish to order. I got the pork Bento Box which came with fried chicken, sashimi, pork, rice, miso soup and spring roll. Plenty to fill your stomach. Food was not exceptional and was at par with other Japanese restaurants if not better, what sets kaneda apart is the myraid choices and the service. Highly recommended for all those Japanese food lovers.
The place was a bit small, but that is what makes it beautiful as it reminds me of little eatery at the small lanes in Tokyo. Loved the bento boxes as it offers value for money. The rice portion might be a bit small, but the side dishes such as tempura or sashimi on the side makes up for it. The choice of the meat is quite broad too, with soft shell crab and eggplant as the options. I love the savory stir fry pork bento with sashimi on the side. Service was quite fast.
Love this restaurant!! Reasonably priced bento boxes- chicken teriyaki one is my favourite. Tempura, miso soup, fried chicken all delicious. Sushi could use some work. The service here is so friendly and pleasant, really made my day :)
I chose a Tempurari Bento 🍱 the meal was big enough to fulfill my hungry. Taste was good, not too salty as other Japanese restaurants I tried before. Only paying in cash is a minus. And the price isn't affordable as well.
Great tasting Japanese food that is reasonably priced. Staff are friendly, and the ambience is quirky and very Japanese-y, will come back again!
Kaneda is situated in the China Town (Little Bourke Street) Arcade. The restaurant is pretty hidden in the midst of China Town.
It was a small restaurant with the Japanese authentic design; As soon as you step your foot to this restaurant you won't notice that you're in the China Town.
The atmosphere and vibe in this restaurant was very relax, casual, clean and cosy.
The customer staffs were also very polite, friendly, attentive and serving with smile.
We started our dish with Salmon sushi while waiting our friends to come. The sushi was well made, firm texture and freshly served.
The sushi rice had a balance taste.
We had confident on all dishes in this restaurant judging from the delicious sushi we ordered.
Personally, you can't go wrong with any dish you order from this restaurant.
We ordered:
- Gyudon (sliced beef cooked with onion teriyaki sauce on rice) for $12.50
The sliced beef was cooked perfectly with teriyaki sauce; The beef was very juicy and tender - very good quality.
However, it was slightly plain; Adding more seasoning would make this dish perfect.
- Crumbed Fish Fillet Set (sashimi, fried chicken, spring roll, green salad, miso soup, rice) for $14.80
- Chicken Teriyaki Set (assorted tempura, fried chicken, spring roll, green salad, miso soup, rice) for $14.80
Both sets served in decent quality of food and very appealing presentation;
They were very reasonable price for this generous portion ( < $15.00 where can you find it?).
The spring roll, assorted tempura, crumbed fish fillet were well fried.
They were served in hot and crunchy.
Sashimi and green salad were served fresh.
Note: Bento sets were totally recommended.
Overall, we had a fantastic experiences in this restaurant; Certainly, we will come back to try other dishes.
We're more than happy to recommend this restaurant to others.
This restaurant is one of the best Japanese restaurant in Melbourne CBD considering by the following factors: good taste, great customer service, reasonable price, great quality of food served
Service: 4.5
Taste: 4.0
Price: 4.0
Speed: 3.5
Yay: Great quality of food, generous portion, reasonable price, great customer service
Nay: Gyudon was slightly plain taste
Location: Shop 6, Midcity Arcade, 200, Bourke Street, CBD, Melbourne, VIC
Price: 03 9663 8802
Wonderful place! The Sushi Rolls you get are amazing!! The staff are so kind and friendly. The atmosphere really makes you feel like you're in Japan.
Ordinary sashimi, and the fried chicken wasn't crunchy at all. But kudos for making such amazing and soft sushi vinegar rice! Seriously so delicious, even on its own.
Service is so attentive and helpful as well.
Thank you for having vegetarian bento boxes. They are hard to find and I'm happy to have found you.
Agedashi tofu was delicious and I enjoyed the seaweed salad and tempura veggies. Service acceptable and decor is great albeit a tad rundown.
Small shop in an arcade with about 15 people seating. Ordered a sashimi deluxe and that was great although the wasabi wasn't too strong. The oyako was really plain and didn't enjoy it too much. Had a bit of beef and chicken katsu which was a lot better so definitely would recommend those two dishes instead of the oyako don. Cheap feed too if you're interested
The ultimate chirashi bowl winner. The grilled chirashi bowl is definitely a value for money. Assorted grilled sashimi on rice at only $15. This is a deal, food is amazing too! No pictures of grilled chirashi because we were too hungry!
Other dishes includes:
Clam Bento rice:
Clam cooked in butter sauce, Yums! The sauce goes great with white rice, definitely making you craving for more:
Tempura Bento Rice:
Crispy and light batter, very well fried tempura.
Salmon chirashi don:
Fresh salmon, tamago, fresh ebi. The freshness from the sashimi definitely bring out the quality sushi rice taste as well.
Teriyaki beef Bento:
Very flavourful. Beef strips well cooked and tender.
Nigiri sushi platter:
The sushi are good but not as great. Nothing stand out from other sushi establishments.
Highly recommend the cooked dishes, grilled and fresh chirashi bowl but not the fresh sushi platter.
Went in due to the high ratings. Was pleasantly surprised with the massive menu and reasonable prices. The staff were friendly and quick to respond and the turn over was very high, yet the restaurant was not loud. The food was high quality, fresh, clean and quickly prepared.
This place was definitely a hit! When it comes to Jap food, I would prefer snacking rather than main dishes like rice or noodle. Kaneda is excellent for choices, they have variety of sushi, fried food, finger food... so much more. We ordered takoyaki, soft shell crab, tempura, scallop and squid. They serve the 'real' Japanese food. But the last time I went, it was a long queue and we had to wait for half and hour. The place is a bit small and it was hard to find. But damn it was worth it
Very nice shop. Small hole in the wall feel. The sushimi was delicious and amazing quality. The eel was extremely good as well, not overly sweet and a nice taste of rich fat. The service was a little slow though.
An excellent place for affordable no-frills sushi, sashimi & bento boxes. Flavourful sushi and melt-in-your-mouth sashimi that gets to the point while maintaining good value for money - clearly a student's dream.
POSITIVE : Friendly staff and quick service. Menus are a bit tired, but so what- the food is exactly as described and tasty tasty. It comes out quick, is delicious and the place really is a little bit of Tokyo chipped free and transported south. Reccomend.
Last night I had dinner at Kaneda Japanese Restaurant. I ordered the takoyaki which was excellent, and I also ordered the Flame Chirashi Sushi.
I do think the Flame Chirashi Sushi could have come with more sashimi. There was lots and lots of rice. Thankfully the rice wasn't plain and had a nice flavour to it that reminded me of eating sushi rice.
This place is good value for money since the servings are quite large and the meals don't cost much.
Solid lunchtime option!I ordered the cold soba noodles + tempura and was satisfied with what I got. The dipping sauces where flavoursome and the tempura batter was light and crispy, though the vege selection itself was not great (lots of pumpkin and kumura). It's presented in a no thrills kind of way that you would expect for the price. The décor was kawaii! The service was friendly and prompt.
Very good place to try Japanese food. The fish is really fresh and the taste is a little sweet. I really recommend the beef tongue meal and the eggplant bento. The service is very nice as well.
Japanese restaurant in the China town arcade area.
I ordered Katsudon Chicken, it was good but I have used to the O-bento shops Tonkatsu sauce for a while, this is still good and filling however.
The sushi was very good, it was nice and fresh no fishy after taste.
The sashimi was also very good it melts in your mouth and fresh.
Customer service was excellent and friendly, the service and arrival of the food was ok, its busy and it took a bit of time for the food to arrive.
Reasonably priced cosy little eatery, tucked away inside the mid-city arcade and with pleasant timely service. Ordered sushi bento, which was pretty good, but wasabi was not offered and brought only upon request. Whatever they provide as wasabi is definitely not it. There was no kick to it, and I suspect that this could be some kind of horse radish. To me, that was the only major letdown.
Quite fresh sashimi but a little bit pricey. But you get what you paid. Highly recommended.
