Managed to sneak into Henry Sugar for one last dinner before the next round of COVID lockdowns in Melbourne. Food was excellent, as usual, with innovative drinks pairings. Definitely a must visit venue for vegetarians. Equally impressive was the service; the restaurant was fully booked but the relaxed, informative wait staff were impeccable. Can't wait to get back there when we're all allowed out again.
I had more than 10 dishes including desserts. No any food I don’t like it. I think the words cannot describe how delicious those food are! This is the best restaurant you should go!
IMPECCABLE!..it doesn't t matter what you order at Henry Sugar,it's going to be delicious and it's going to be cooked to perfection!!we tried 12 different dishes tonight and we couldn't agree which one was the best!!!..not so easy to have an experience like this in Melbourne..the food reminded me of some of the Michelin starred restaurant I tried in Europe..thank you guys..Amazing!!
I came across Henry Sugar by chance as the nearby Kent Hotel had closed for renovation and so I was looking for something in the area for a birthday dinner. So happy to have come across this fantastic bar/restaurant. It was the perfect venue. I was able to book the private dining room which can comfortably seat 12. We didn’t have to think of a thing all night. The set menu at $75 per head was delivered to us throughout the night. We all agreed it’s nice to not have to think of what to order. Got to try some dishes we would never have thought of. Everything’s was delicious. The staff were great, very relaxed and efficient at the same time. Amazing cocktails. It’s the perfect venue as you can meet for pre dinner drinks at the bar and then have your meal. We all gave the place 5 stars and would go back. So glad that Mr Google suggested this place to me and we will be back without a doubt.
We had a bday party for 11 at Henry Sugar. It was exactly what we wanted. A warm welcome in the bar area with great cocktails and a fantastic dinner in the semi-private part towards the back. The sharing dishes were innovative, without being excessive, and very tasteful from starter to desserts. My wife (bday girl) is vegetarian and her dishes were equally great. The wines were exquisite. Service by Daniel was personal and very pleasant. The moment we sat down dishes started arriving. This is a small place with a lot of character. Fine dining without the brouhaha.
Henry Sugar is one of those neighbourhood bars that’s popular with locals but manages to fly under the radar for a while. It opened in December 2016 but it’s been relatively recently that those not local to the area have started paying attention.
This place is very unassuming. It looks very low key but it is anything but. That said, it is not stuffy, glitzy and snobby. It is like walking into a bar where the staff are very friendly, chilled vibes but you get food that’s five star! The food and drinks are “simple” in appearance but the taste is anything but. Been there twice and both times still wowed. Recommended friends and they too sing praises... I think if I could, I’d keep this place my little secret because it’s that good...
this place is super sexy. cocktails all awesome and gonzo long is my personal favorite with a citrus flavor. house spiritz was served with olive. octopus cooked well, and cobia was quite soft and fresh. my chocolate ice cream dish contained 3 ice cream parts including the bowl like stuff lol.
really friendly service and cozy vibes.
We had the $65 pp menu and they were able to cater to individual dietary requirements, as quite a few of the dishes are served in individual portions. Food was amazing. The pork was possibly the best pork I’ve ever had. The only reason this is a 4 instead of a 5, is that the service slowed down a bit towards the end when they were fully booked and busy. But it was a minor niggle on an otherwise perfect night and meal.
To sum it up - Michelin Star food at bistro prices! Wine list - well chosen, interesting, focused on food offered and very fairly priced. Service - friendly, competent and attentive. Give it a go - you won’t be disappointed
I come here for breakfast quite often on a saturday morning because these guys know how to cook! I'm sure the rest of the menu is great but I never seem to be able to get past the smoked salmon. Great service and atmosphere
We just had the Henry Sugar Menu which included 12 different plates and literally every single one was amazing. Every dish was incredible with amazing flavours and textures, it was exciting to eat. The restaurant itself felt very warm and intimate and the staff were very friendly. We’re already looking forward to our next visit.
Loved everything about this place. It was everything I look for in a great dining experience: top notch service with a friendly attitude, the staff know what they are talking about and are happy to explain anything, mood lighting, warm atmosphere, amazing, innovative food, and delicious wine. Will be back, with my friends in tow!
Every foodie is looking for the next place. The one not everyone knows about yet but when they find out, you won’t be able to get a table without booking two months in advance. Henry Sugar is that place. The food is incredible. The drinks and cocktail list are excellent but they’ll make you anything you like. The service is fantastic. The decor is very sexy, with exposed brick, flattering lighting, and rose gold tables. It’s a good date venue. Casual but classy. I’d suggest you get in before the crowds. This place is a winner.
I can’t stop going back to this restaurant. The food is delicious, refined and incredibly thoughtful. The wait staff are very attentive and have an in depth knowledge of the menu and wine list. The menu changes regularly (whilst still keeping the favourites!) and has never disappointed. It also has the most lovely ambience, with a lovely cosy fire for the winter. I would be very surprised if this great little restaurant doesn’t get a hat next year.
really enjoyed the recent visit, good food a few slight misses but it is all personal taste wine list was varied and interesting. just a word could you put it in a bigger format? just to space out and make it easier to read.
will return
What a lovely surprise to find this little Gem...very happy with out choice, or should say the choice of the waiter for us. We opted for the Henry Sugar Menu, so got to taste a dozen or so different dishes. Loved all of them. The waiter was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful in his suggestions. The folks we dined with really enjoyed the wine that they ordered. (and the cocktail to begin the meal) The mandarin parfait (did he say Parfait? was a creamy custard)..worked so well at the end of the meal, served with a sort of granita and mandarin segments, very fresh on the palate, lovely mouth feel and taste...will be a vocal supporter of this restaurant...thoroughly recommended.
Love it!! We recently had dinner here with 18 friends. Group dinners can be tricky, but Henry Sugar made it easy and accommodated our party with style. The degustation was delicious, beautiful and generous. Jake, our waiter, made the evening seamless and was on top of every request. Thanks Jake and Henry Sugar for a perfect evening.
What a delightful place, we stopped in for lunch. They are a friendly team who are thoughtful with service and incredibly knowledgeable about their wines. Toasted sandwiches alongside a few glasses of wine made for an enjoyable time.
I recently celebrated my 30th at Henry Sugar by
having a brunch with drinks for 20 guests. Dan and Mike were VERY accommodating
and flexible with what I wanted to achieve in the lead up to the brunch. They helped
design a starter meal, main brunch meal and cake to finish, plus they were on
top of filling up everyone’s glasses with coffee, mimosas or sparkling water! They also let me come in earlier to decorate the table with my own touches (flower etc).
The food and service on the day was perfect and everyone
commented on how delicious their meals were.
It made the brunch a very special occasion.
Thanks again guys – I know a lot of people left saying how fantastic
the morning was.
We came here for dinner on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was fairly quiet at the time we arrived and we were seated almost immediately. We opted for the chefs menu because we wanted to try everything. There were a few hits and misses. I enjoyed the bread with burnt leek butter and the starters. The mains were a bit of a let down though. The sea bream was very salty which was a shame because it was perfectly cooked. The duck, on the other hand, had a nice smokey flavour but the fat wasn't rendered enough. I thoroughly enjoyed the eggplant with harissa as it was creamy and full of flavour. There was also quite wait in between courses which made the meal disjointed. The desserts were interesting and playful. I enjoyed the goat's cheese chantilly dessert as it was very well balanced. Service was okay but as the restaurant got busy, it was difficult to get the attention of wait staff.
Amazing wines, cocktails and share plates! Service is fantastic and the staff know their stuff. Definitely well underrated! Try the deep fried brocoli leaves. My mouth is still watering. Chef's menu is the best value for money and I still dream about their desserts. An amazing wine bar that also does brunch?! Dream come true! Definitely my favourite wine bar in Melbourne! Yes please.
Great staff, warm, friendly and knowledgeable. The food is absolutely delicious - tasty and creative. Some good veg options and everything on the menu is worth going back for. The cocktails are excellent and they know their wine. Absolutely North Carltons best kept secret.
I came here for brunch last Saturday with friends. The food was delicate and delicious. I ordered the octopus & black sausage with potato and poached egg which was so innovative for brunch! The potato was a puree with a nice creamy texture. Unfortunately we didn't know there would be cream with the potato and my friend is intolerable to it. The wait staff and chef were extremely accommodating to take the dish back and provide something different. Had we been somewhere else, it would be very easy and common for staff to be passive aggressive or charge twice but this was not the case here - such incredible service. This is the reason I have given five stars. The waiter was very friendly and consistently topped up sparkling water. We all enjoyed our meals and had a wonderful experience there.
Amazing food and drinks with VERY reasonable price.and staff with best knowledge.A DEFINITE MUST GO PLACE WHILE UR IN MELBOURNE. Thanks Henry sugar.:-)
Amazing food, delicious drinks great service, and a nice fitout and ambience all make Henry Sugar well worth the visit - and definitely one to put on your bucket list! Perfect for vegetarians and carnivores alike, the menu is quirky but incredibly well done. Highly recommended!
Delightful! Henry sugar is the perfect place for an evening out with good company and good food. We booked ahead just to ensure a table and glad we did! A buzzing environment but also quite intimate. We ordered a variety of options starting with the house bread. It was so good! We then had the lentil parfait and pierogi of wild boar. The parfait has such a good flavour! We then had the charcoal grilled broccoli - you must order it! It was truly the best broccoli I’ve ever had in my life! We then continued on with the roast pumpkin, smoked cobia and the Parmesan chips. Again they were all so good. For dessert we had the coconut custard and the chocolate mousse - both were delightful. I was amazed at how the bay leaf flavour came out in the mousse and complimented it so well! We then finished off with the cheese which was really good but had an overpowering smell that you have to get past to enjoy it. For drinks I requested a cocktail with Four Pillars Shiraz Gin and was brought an amazing cocktail I can’t remember the name of! I then had the patient Scotsman which was good but quite strong. It really was a great night dining out, you must go!
Henry sugar boasts a beautiful and elegant vibe with extremely friendly waiters and staff. The head chef matt is super talented. We loved the cocktail menu and suggest the house spritz which comes with a kalamata olive ice cream bite!! The lentil parfait and tofu tartare were exquisite- a vegetarians dream! Desserts are delicate, stunning and super tasty! A great spot for a beautiful night out.
I've been here a grant total of 3 times now, and loved every part of it
1. Brunch/lunch here on a lazy weekend.
- Ambience lovely, open fireplace gives you a nice warm smokey feel. Mulled wine is a must. The complementary bread and butter is amazing!
2. Ala carte dinner menu.
- Entrees: wild boar pierogi, parsnip, octopus - all interesting.
- Mains were the cobia and lamb neck and cima di rapa. (Lamb a bit salty but exciting nonetheless.
Dessert : oat tart, chocolate mousse and creme brulee. Creme brûlée - perfect.
3. Degustation Dinner Menu $65/person (perfect date night experience)
- burnt leek butter + bread (yum!)
- tartare of tofu+sesame puff, de puy lentil parfait+sherry,
- charcoal grilled brocolli, aglio, almond (amazing!)
- harissa eggplant + tahini
- market fish, zucchini, olive
- lamb blade on bone, kalamata, almond
- octopus, cucumber, sesame, wakame (partner isn't a great fan of octopus but loved this!)
- TWO desserts: goats curd chantilly, watermelon, olive oil AND chocolate passionfruit
Overall, I have never been disappointed here - service on point, great wine list, food always a great experience.
Wanted to get a coffee while walking the dog. Came past here and it looked nice. We sat outside. Coffee was good. Chai latte (with housemade almond milk as recommended by the waitress) was nice too. Because almost all the zomato reviews mentioned the lentil pate dish we decided to take that and it was very good. Would love to try a full meal here, hopefully soon!
Incredible food and cocktails with a great wine list. This is our new local favorite after 5 unforgettable visits. The lentil parfait, beef cheek and tofu tartare are some of our go-to's. Great atmosphere, relaxed wine bar vibes, perfect for a casual date night or wine and desserts with friends.
This place walks a number of fine lines extremely gracefully.
The fit-out is chic and pared back, but also cosy and welcoming.
The menu is consistently interesting and creative without ever drifting into food-wankery (my particular faves are the duck confit pierogi, the beef cheek and, oddly, the broccoli (seriously, when was the last time you thought of broccoli as a stand out dish?))
And the service is friendly and the staff are extremely knowledgeable, but you never get the feeling they're showing off.
I've been here three or four times now and always just eaten the degustation, which is steal at $65 a head, which they seem to change up on a pretty regular basis, and which ensures you leave plenty of room for dessert (the desserts, along with the cocktails, are probably where the menu gets most inventive)
My wife chose this place for dinner on Anzac day and I didn't know what to expect.
Well decored , cool atmosphere (right next to the fire place was great!)
Staff were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about every dish (we did the $60pp House menu which I highly recommend)
Wine list was small but delicious (we tried 3 different reds along with a prosecco) and all were very good.
The food was quite an experience - all positive, interesting and engaging. Its been a while since ive had arguments with myself over which dish I enjoyed most. Some very clever and inventive use of flavours.
Highly recommend this place for a quality night.
I can't explain how delicious the bread is. It's insanely fresh, melt in your mouth kinda stuff. The crust is mind-blowing, it's really, truly something else. And the tomato butter? So good. Any who, enough about the bread.
My boy friend & I came in for my birthday dinner and were delighted to have chosen the tasting menu. It's easily the best value in town, paying only $60 pp. for approximately five or so courses. I doubt it will stay so reasonably priced for long.
We indulged in the aperitif cocktail with our bread and lentil parfait. Yes, lentil. Which was awesome because I love parfait but can't get my head around it so don't normally eat it. But this one was vegetarian and as a result I basically inhaled it. We couldn't believe the flavour.
Next we tried the squid and chorizo dish, which was served with the charred broccoli as a side dish. The broccoli. Wow. This course was definitely a sight to see, satisfying the taste buds too. We had a glass of resiling with this course.
The steak and mushies came next (definitely not the technical name for the dish), but there was some incredible vinaigrette business going on here, which was perfect for cutting through the richness of the enoki and red meat. This was paired with parmesan crusted chips and roast shallot mayo. Our bartender recommended the syrah by the glass.
My partner then had a local dark beer off tap and I decided on an amaro for a digestive. Dessert was a great mix of a classic and something a little different. We started with something a little different; there was olive oil and sorbets and a granita. I can't remember the flavours exactly but it was a nice palate cleanser. And then came the creme brûlée, which I think was served as a little extra birthday treat as it came complete with a candle and singing wait staff.
Thanks Henry Sugar. Such a marvellous experience, I thought about it for days. Can't wait to return.
This is the best place I've been to for a while. From start to finish it is just a delight. The staff here are really friendly and helpful in guiding us through the menu.
To start.. the lentil parfait. Sounds weird but absolutely amazing. As creamy and delicious as a normal parfait but amazingly made out of lentils. The perogi is also a deicious little bite.
The octopus is easily the best dish I've had so far this year. Stuffed with chorizo.. its delicate yet moorish. I would be happy eating this dish over ane over again.
The smoked cobia is a revelation... a meaty fish and really smoky... tastes like bacon but is a fish.
The parmesan chips are a wonderful accompaniment.
Even the bread and butter is great.
The goats curd chantilly is like no dessert I've ever had but a refreshing end to a beautiful meal.
The wine line is small but interesting. All wines we've had here are fantastic.
A true neighborhood gem.
Excellent. Interesting tastes and textures, and a nice range of cocktails. Service just on the right side of annoying and overbearing. Could do with a few more non-bar tables. The lentil pâté is particularly good, with an almost meaty taste.
Went here with my girlfriend out of curiosity and had the tasting menu (degustation).
We were both blown away by how good the food was! Expertly constructed dishes that were creative and delicious. Incredible value as well at only $60. Some great wine, and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Absolutely cracking find for a couple of locals!
Wow! We went for a wander down Rathdowne with no real plan and stopped in for a drink here. Ended up doing the tasting menu for $60 and we're blown away. Such good food!!! Technically great and some awesome drink matches when we asked the bar staff. Good luck to them
Henry Sugar is a beautiful, intimate restaurant that explores the boutique wines. Staff here are super friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable on their whole menu and more. Ambience is perfect for a catch up with friends or date night with soft lighting and great background tunes. Food menu here is unique, exploring some great combinations with some great in house bread, Vegemite and more. Servings sizes are built to share and they have great flavours.
Finally visited this place after so many people raved about it. Came on a Monday night with its 2 course for $40 special, bit disappointed that there's only 1 main & 1 entree option for the set, the rest are "snacks". The main size snacks are much more worth it than the small bites, the pistachio sponge was a bit average, everything else was delicious. Will be back.
Wow so delicious, the waitstaff had exclusive knowledge on the wine provided. My partner and I went for the French red so delicious and medium bodied on the palate. Our wait person was Maxine and she went above and beyond for my birthday night. We had the delicious ceviche addition to the chef selection and it was not a disappointment. Watermelon to compliment the oysters too. Melt in the mouth donuts with whipped butter inside! Wow what a night to remember. Thank you for the hospitality! We will be back.
My all time favourite place in Melbourne. I went to Henry Sugar when it first opened up a few years ago and it was fabulous then and continues to be just as fabulous. Time and time again they deliver. Wait staff are friendly and accommodating and deliver the perfect balance of impeccable service without being overbearing. The vibe inside is warm but fresh with a relaxed charm. The menu is always delicious and inspired, with zero pretension just quality produce delivered at it’s absolute best. They also have a fabulous drinks menu and make a mean martini. Perfect for a big celebration or a date night. Love, love, love Henry Sugar!
I adore this restaurant! Been three times now- lovely service always, amazing food and great ambience for quiet conversation.
First time seated outdoors, they provided blankets and heating. Very thoughtful!
The dishes are unique, interesting ingredients and beautifully presented. Set menu is a highlight and filling. Can not wait for it to change so we can come back again.
I went there several times and choose Henry sugar to have the special night, my Valentine’s diner. Conclusion first, I love their desert and price is fair.
Environment: it would be good to have good music as BGM. I was sitting under the speaker and the volume changed several times throughout the night.
Food:
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Seaweed butter + bread: 5 stars! The best I ever had.
🌟Rockmelons appetiser: 1 star. I can taste cherly, rockmelon (not sweet or soft at all) and prosciutto separately. No combined flavour. It’s a simple dish, i guess it is because the material is not good enough.
🌟🌟🌟 kingfish: fair. The flavour is strong and creamy
🌟🌟🌟Main duck:fair. The sour cabbage inside is good to balance the duck fat.
🌟🌟🌟🌟lettuces: nice and good. I like the smoky flavour.
🌟🌟🌟Valentine’s dessert: good and fair
They used to have the best panna cotta, i didn’t have it in Valentine’s Day.
Possibly my new favourite restaurant in Melbourne. Outstanding in every way. Had the chef’s menu and every dish that came out was absolutely delicious! The outdoor area was so lovely and the cocktails were out of this world. Can’t wait to come back again! An absolute must visit.
The lamb saddle 3 ways is a masterpiece. Absolutely the best single lamb dish I have eaten. Had an amazing night, chatting with our awesome server Sal and the very interesting people next to us under the umbrella. Have been here several times before and loved it, but the lamb saddle is a world-class dish. All of the staff were incredible as always, just a great place that emanates good vibes. Highly recommended.
