We love and look forward to authentic Japanese food after relocation from Sydney to Melbourne and this is the second one we tried.
With a fine dining interior at first we worried it'd be expensive but price was fair or relatively cheap with such food quality.
We ordered the Sushi & Sashimi Combination Platter for 2 and it was fresh and able to satisfy us! The little Sukiyaki which was on special was yummy too.
Both the staffs here were friendly and provided great service.
With such vibe, food quality & service we definitely will return while we keep exploring our favourite jp restaurants~!

One of the best and most under rated Japanese restaurants in town. A simple menu that hasn’t changed for years. King fish cheeks are awesome.

Having walked past this little place a number of times in the heart of Albert Park high street , thought it was time to try it out.... for some reason it’s never packed so wasn’t quite sure what to expect. We dropped in after 8:30pm on Friday night and there was only one other table seated. The manager was super friendly and welcoming and ran us through the menu and specials... decided to try ordering a few different small plates of edamame, seared salmon sushi, miso soup, gyozas , crab dumplings , spicy prawns with green beans and teriyaki fried chicken. Food was very tasty and well presented . Good wine list although thought wine by the glass was abit on the pricy side. Overall a cute casual place for a bite to eat and worth a try

We commenced our meal at Eis on a recent cold and rainy evening seated snugly by the window and a warm gas heater, only two other tables in the restaurant were occupied.

We ordered a couple of Kirin Ichiban beers and edamame to kick things off while we checked out the menu.

The edamame was the exact opposite of fresh and we were served Kirin Megumi beers (less delicious and locally brewed rather than imported from Japan). After such an unpromising start I began to wonder if we has made a mistake but we kept faith in the recommendation of the friend who suggested we give Eis a shot and we pressed on…

We ordered the sushi and sashimi combination plate, tatsuta age and grilled half eggplant. Thankfully everything was delicious! The sushi and sashimi were excellent (some of the best sashimi I have had), the tatsuta age was great and the miso baked half eggplant was also really good.

I’d go back but needless to say I’d skip the edamame and beer – we had a nice dry sake that didn’t seem to be on the menu so I would suggest asking for a sake recommendation that suits your taste – the staff were very helpful.

Are you looking for great quality Sushi that just melts in your mouth and has a unique flavour? If so, then Eis is the place for you. Having been awhile since Emily and I have had good sushi, we decided to visit this pocket of a restaurant located in the heart of South Melbourne.

With a very intimate ambience offering a relaxed fine dining vibe, you will feel immediately welcome and at ease. The attendant we had was a woman from Japan who was nothing short of exemplary in service. Always topping up our waters, ensuring we were enjoying our meal, to even leading us out by holding the door and bringing the card machine to us upon payment- she is the embodiment of what is so crux in Japan and we loved her and the restaurant that much more.

Now let's get to the sushi. Gyozas, 4 pieces of special seared salmon with ocean salt(?), The salmon avocado and of course Salmon Sashimi on its own (upon request). The Gyozas were a surprise considering as they were fried as pictured but were tasty nonetheless. We loved how it was so crunchy on the outside but was still so soft within, with the meats oozing with flavour. The salmon avocado was creamy with sauce, and literally melted in your mouth. The salmon sashimi was succulent and juicy, tasting fresh and marbled- a fattier variety and taste than others symbolising greater value and taste (for me anyway). Finally the seared salmon is to die for. Similar to the ippudo seared salmon, this was just too good. What was surprising was how well it went with the chosen salt, and how it all melted in your mouth for a flavourful of goodness.

We highly recommend this restaurant for great quality Sushi and sashimi. A true Japanese Experience in every single way!

Eis is a contemporary Japanese restaurant in the idyllic suburb of Albert Park. Eis is a long and narrow space with tables lining both sides. The decor is simple, and the furniture is perhaps more comfortable than sleek. The lighting is dark and the mood is slightly romantic. It's a perfect venue for a date or an intimate dinner with close family and friends.

We have been going to Eis Japanese Restaurant for six years now.  Each time we go, we love the experience.  Firstly, the atmosphere is relaxing but elegant.  Secondly, the service is amazing.  Intimate without being intrusive.  Very friendly.  Thirdly, and most importantly, the food is absolutely delicious and beautifully presented.  We have been to Eis many, many times for lunch and dinner and always look forward to the experience  It is simply fabulous.  The menu changes frequently, but you can also enjoy your old favourites.  Our personal favourite is the ocean trout carpaccio which is sometimes substituted for salmon carpaccio.  This dish, like every other on the menu, is subtly complex, perfectly balanced in flavours and textures and just absolutely delicious.  Do yourself a favour and eat at Eis.  It will become one of your favourite restaurants as it is ours.

Albert Park’s hidden little secret, tucked away in a tiny space is the wonderful Eis Japanese restaurant and having been around for nearly 15 years they must be doing a lot of things right! The set up is cosy and cute with tables running either side to make use of the limited space. The lovely Hiro will show you to your table and guide you through their wonderful menu packed full of Japanese traditional and new and a very respectable wine list. We loved the Chenin Blanc – perfect with our edamame and there were lots of other really interesting wines by the glass and bottle on offer.

The other week, we were lucky enough to be invited to try a unique little Japanese restaurant in Albert Park. We arrived quite early and our host Hiro gave us the table near the heater. As the night went on, more people trickled in for Friday date nights and takeaway. A group of Japanese people also came in, so I thought perhaps this was a sign their traditional food was close to the real deal.

Eis is a small Japanese restaurant in Albert Park, close to the famous Andrew's Burger joint and easily accessible by tram 1. I was lucky enough to be invited by head chef Hiro to try out some of their famous dishes, and had an enjoyable experience here. The restaurant has a modern feel to it, with contemporary jazz music playing in the background and mood lighting. The seats are really comfortable and there are simple decorations on the wall; one side has a whole shelf of wine bottles, and the other a large wooden plank. The restaurant itself isn't very big, and at most seats about 30 people. The staff were attentive and friendly, though there was quite a bit of wait for our food to come, even though it wasn't busy at all when we went on a Friday night.

Eis is the realisation of chef and owner Hiroyasu Aoki’s dream. The menu displays Aoki’s vision of simplicity and elegance while the interior is chic. We were pleased to be presented with a degustation curated by Aoki. Salmon carpaccio sea salt lemon juice & basil paste - The carpaccio of salmon arrived as a plate of thinly sliced salmon topped with lemon juice & basil paste (not dissimilar to pesto). While not thoroughly resolved, it was an interesting dish in both texture and taste.

Recently I was fortunate enough to be invited by Hiro to try Eis' crispy chicken wrap and grilled eggplant. Prior to Hiro's email, I had heard about EIS from the ET book but that was about it. So this gave me the perfect excuse to try it. Located in Albert Park it's a close neighbour of Andrew's Hamburgers, where it's a small residential shopping area. It's a small, cosy local Japanese restaurant. Unlike most other Japanese restaurants who either go down the path of fusion of traditional, Eis offers both to accommodate what it's guest may feel like for the day.We decided, just chicken wrap and grilled eggplant wasn't going to be enough for us, so we decided to go all out and have a proper dinner.

I was thrilled to be invited to Eis Japanese Restaurant by owner & talented chef Hiroyasu Aoki. I have never heard of the restaurant before and the location wasn't somewhere I usually venture out to, however I am always up for trying somewhere new and finding the best new neighbourhood gem. Opening it's doors in 2001, this Albert Park restaurant brings simple and elegant together to create a truly amazing Japanese restaurant.

Eis Japanese Restaurant is a white table cloth restaurant that is kept casual with its laid back, yet comfy netted and cushion seats. The decor is homey and unfussy. We were thrilled to be the first ones there so we can pick the best seats in the house, the one closest to the heater!. Crispy Chicken Wrap With Cucumber Carrot & Sweet Soy Sauce, 5AUD Each

Stepping into the cosy dining room of EIS Japanese Restaurant has the warmth and comfort of stepping into an old friend’s house (if your friend happens to wine and dine guests in their hallway and had their house recently overhauled by the design geniuses at Architects Eat). Cramped by cosy, Architects Eat has done a great job utilising the little amount of space available

Really hits the sweet spot between service, quality, and price. We had spinach with sesame, grilled eggplant, agedashi tofu, crabmeat dumplings etc. All delicious, but my starter of ponzu oysters was the highlight. Excellent!

All the components of the Bento are exceptional, but if I were to single out one item as the star it would be the Katsu Chicken. The Japanese have plugged away with their Fried Chicken with the obsessiveness of a Heston Blumenthal and when they got it right with Katsu chicken they stuck with it.

I come here regularly for lunch and it is good value and excellent quality. I have the traditional katsu chicken bento box which is consistently good - chicken is nice and juicy without being greasy even though it is deepfried. I'm a big fan and will continue to come back for lunch! Service is great too.

Cosy Japanese restaurant that has a yumtastic lunch bento box - the chicken and takoyaki ball was surprisingly tasty but the Gyoza was a disappointment. Cold and fried, it's nothing like the tender, juicy and super tasty Gyozas I was expecting. Our waiter was pleasant but other wait staff were stand offish and it felt like they were hiding in the back of restaurant to avoid diner contact.

Great food, weird venue!. Dined in with 2 others friends for a quiet evening meal. The first thing that stuck out was the decor, or lack thereof. The place was almost bare and gave off an extremely uninviting feel. The layout of the restaurant didn't seem to work too well either. The venue is extremely skinny and felt really stuffy and when seated in my char, it kept getting hit by waitresses as they walked down the center isle.

Aside from the weird layout and decor, the food was fantastic, although a little over priced. I had Californian rolls to start, which were absolutely delicious, followed by Terriyaki steak, which was also a great dish and cooked perfectly.

Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience, but I'm not too sure i'd be interested in heading back. I didn't feel very relaxed and the atmosphere was a little strange.

Understated but excellent!. I would have dined at Eis for over 2 years on an irregular basis but have never had a bad experience. The chef/proprieter has great attention to detail and always ensures consistency in the food and service. A laid back but cool atmosphere the ambiance would suit most tastes. The oyster shooters are inspired and the followup often innovative but never failing to please. A great recipe for a happy 'Japanese' dining experience any night of the week.

Innovative contemporary japanese fare. My partner and i had the degustation menu which was very refreshing. The fusion of japanese and western aspects of the menu married well and the paired wine, while very generous, complimented all the courses. Everything was outstanding and the sauces that came with the oysters, king fish, ocean trout, lamb and prawns were light and accentuated the natural flavors of the meat. In my opinion, Eis is far better and far more innovative than her more popular sister, Izakaya Den. A real gem tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the cbd.

Eis is a wonderful experience. The food is amazing, Even though it's quite different to standard Japanese fare. The Gyoza and fried chicken are favourites as starters, and the yellowfin tuna main is just perfect. The wonderful food is backed by faultless service, with friendly, super attentive staff. Certainly Albert Park's finest Japanese restaurant.

This japanese restaurant serves both modern/contemporary dishes along with the more traditional sushi and sashimi. What we love were the fried chicken and the dumplings. Chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The accompanying pickle was refreshing with a bit of heat to it. The crab dumpling was seasoned perfectly and the noodle-like skin was something unique we never see before. Food - 8 Service - 10 Vibe - 8 Price - $$$$

Cute little restaurant run by a nice Japanese guy. Food was great, the traditional Japanese food hits the mark and is made with really fresh tasting Ingredients. The modern spin on Japanese foods/ western fusion went down a treat and is definitely worth trying.

Some of, if not the most authentic style Japanese cuisine in Melbourne. From the wagyu to the sashimi it’s all amazingly fresh. Small venue makes it a very personal experience. Couldn’t recommend more.

One of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Melbourne, great for small families or date nights. Eis' menu offers two options - those who prefer contemporary take on Japanese, and those who prefer the traditional. For the quality of food, it is extraordinarily good value. I especially love the eggplant - smoky and sweet, and oh so more-ish. There's also a well thought-out and very reasonably priced wine list. I am lucky to call this my local.
