Staffs are friendly and attentive. Love the vibe not the music though. This place is also very clean and their bar food is on another level!
We’ve ordered a variety of dishes from nachos, steaks to burgers and nothings came short on quality. I’m really impressed.

The renovated pub is a great venue and large enough to accommodate big groups. Our group of three arrived in the early evening on a Saturday to an extremely quiet place where we felt a little lost. The bar staff were lovely but seemingly a bit frazzled and unsure of the products. We ordered at the bar and then had a waitress advise 5 mins later our entree wasn’t available and to pick something else similar instead but wouldn’t allow us to as nothing else cost that exact amount.
The food itself was delicious. I had a classic Parma GF which was great. Smaller than Cornish Arms but quality was there. All in all it was a bit awkward but nice dining experience.
Would not recommend for a date or catch up where you want to have an in-depth convo.
Came here on a public holiday and it was dead! Felt really bad for the staff just hanging around at the bar. I love the separate vegan menu! I ordered the vegan zucchini burger, it was delicious! Great range of beers on tap and the interior has a great set up (was hard to tell the vibe from lack of customers). I will be back to taste more yummy food and enjoy the friendly service :)
My partner and I had a scoopon lunch deal here for $35, 3 course meal simple but delicious.
The price included two drinks each (alcoholic or not) which was absolutely amazing for the price.
friendly staff and nice environment. Would go again.
staff were friendly, prompt and professional - I must add it is simply awesome to see an actual Australian pub hiring multicultural staff for a change - a big thumbs up to the hiring manager for this as I find many Australian pubs hire mostly Caucasians. food was good quality and awesome value for money - they have some sort of special most days and the Groupon deal is well worth it. Decor is bohemian / grungy style, which is not my thing really, but at least the place is clean and well maintained.
Got the scoopon deal.
Great value food. But the steak was tough and very plain. The beef burger was good. The fish and chips at the other table looked good, should’ve gotten that. Cheesecake was bomb. There was long waiting times in between meals though.
The Shaw Davey Slum has been there for a while now and they are featured in the Entertainment book. They are a student pub in Carlton which has cheap happy hours. However, they have a minimum spend in the book which I did not know about. It turns out that you need to spend $30 on food alone and not the drinks part.
Good service. Delicious food. Loved the ambience there. It's welcoming with an eager energy, boosted by keen waiters. Peanut cheese cake is soooo yummy. Perfect place for a dinner date.
Been here a few times and I’m never disappointed. Drinks are cheap, the meals are reasonably priced but always amazing. Highly rate the zucchini burger and the fried Camembert. Great lunch/dinner spot and the tunes are good!
$5 pizza, $8 jugs, $6 house spirits, $7 cocktails, Wednesdayieces wing platters with chips. Can it get any better than that for a poor college student??? Wooo
Went on a week night, not a lot of guests so service was super fast. We received the wrong toppings for a pizza and staff happily changed it over for us. Camembert is delish! Would come back for Camembert
Such yummy food, so affordable, a great place to go with friends. The drink prices and the happy hour are also top notch. Delicious cocktail jugs! A great place to go if you want a great night without the exorbitant prices of Lygon street around the corner, which is almost a tourist trap these days
I had plans to have dinner with a friend around Carlton and we both decided we were keen on a parmi. Scoping the area I found The Shaw Davey Slum was on my list of places I was interested in trying. Off we went.. to our surprise the drink specials are amazing. $2 pots of cider or beer! Yessssss.. we had a few of those! Parmi arrived and they looked delicious. The chicken itself was a little overdone and the sauce was a a tad too tomato-pastey? But for the price we would definitely be back for some other pub classics! The drink specials are too inviting not to!

A good venue for drinks and honest food with friends. We felt everything is always reasonably priced and the venue isn't trying to be anything above what it is.
Drinks with friends and pub meals, absolutely a great venue for just that.
We bought a Scoopon voucher online and booked a certain time for our dinner. When we got there, our name was not listed but I had spoken to one of the ladies few hours ago. They said phone # is direct to head office? But the waitress was nice and accommodated us anyway. Staff are friendly and the place has nice interiors. Finding parking can be difficult. The place has a pub feel and was a little noisy that night. Food was okay. Polenta chips and arancini balls were good. My bf enjoyed his burger but my steak did not have seasoning and was tough to eat. Dessert was great! Peanut butter cheesecake is a must try!
We "Slummed" it with friends , good deal 3 courses and two drinks each for only $35. Pleasant service and above average meals. Only downside , we went on a Uni orientation week night and had 100-200 pub crawling students .....very NOISY. Pick your night carefully. I gave up calling the phone and eventually booked online. Give it a go !!
Bought a scoopon voucher for dinner for two here and was amazing value! Found scoopon entree menu a little confusing but the waitress explained it. Food came out quickly and was delicious, good portion sizes and with nice sauces + dressings. My partner got a burger and only complaint he had was that the beetroot at the bottom of the burger made it soggy. Finished with desert, nice small portions as they are quite rich but delicious. Will be back for sure.
We came due to having the entertainment book, but what a find, so cheap, so yummy, great funky decor, great friendly staff, yummy mojitos, best pulled pork burger I have ever had. We will be regulars
Been here a couple of times now. The burgers are pretty awesome, onion rings are some of the best Ive had. Vibe is really chill and the staff have been really friendly every time Ive been. The cheap prices are also a plus :)
Great for big groups. Usually go herr with my work crew. No need for a reservation. Good price and good parmas & burgers. It's either not known about or not rated well by others because there isn't usually many people there when we dine here.
Incredibly cool decor and friendly staff make this pub stand out. It's definitely aimed at the uni demo, of which I am not apart, but I will still partake in their cheap cocktails and meals! Meals are well priced, and good quality if not huge, but with a solid range of desserts for on $5, who cares!
All Indians from Delhi would understand if I say that The Shaw Davey Slum is the 'My Bar' of Melbourne. Cool place with so damn cheap rates ! You get cheap beer, cheap wine and get to watch people enjoying footy games. There's a dance floor for the ones who like to shake a leg. The place gives you a very laid back vibe. They also have happy hours. Staff is pretty good and friendly. :)
I used to go to Shaw Davey all the time as it was an affordable restaurant/pub with $10 jugs and $12 parmas up for offer. The serving size is decent with a thin yet wide piece of chicken and a good serving of chips and salad, the parma is delicious however almost every single time the chips are always undercooked which is really frustrating. But now that they've raised the price of the parma to $15 it is not so great as you can go to many other places and get a much bigger serving of chicken for that much. Their major selling point was affordability but that's gone now, they also limited the options with the $10 jugs.
I've heard of this place quite a few times & finally came here for a friend's birthday. The place looked really cool, kind of quirky & relaxed.
I ordered the butter chicken which was slightly disappointing unfortunately, the chicken was too dry & flavourless. Other than that, the drinks were great & desserts were also great! Service was good as the waiters were always attentive. Wouldn't mind coming back again :)
Had a great Friday night here! We probably arrived around 9pm after having dinner and drinks else where, but didn't end up leaving until closing at 1am! We enjoyed some wings, lots of good cheap cocktails, the laid back atmosphere and good service downstairs, and the fun and not-to-serious dancefloor upstairs. The DJ was average but the vibe was great with everyone having a laugh, a dance and a good time. Will be back again!
Went there on a late Saturday afternoon as a group of 6 adults and 3 children. On weekends, 11am to 4pm, the kids eat free with a choice of either fish and chips or a slider, a soft drink AND a scoop of homemade ice cream when accompanied by adult main meals. That is a fantastic deal, considering that adult mains are of decent price. Food and service in general is good. Dessert is to die for, especially the salted caramel popcorn panna cotta...yum! Would be even better if they served hot drinks. Otherwise, a lovely place to hang out.
Had dinner tonight at The Shaw Davey Slum and really enjoyed everything, the service was fantastic! The waiters were sharply dressed and very attentive and friendly, the food was really nice too! Can't believe how good the prices were too. Will definitely come back again.
Walking into Shaw Davey Slum you feel like you have entered a high quality uni bar where everyone wants you to have a great time but doesn’t want to look like its trying to hard. Shaw Davey is another baby from the people behind Asian Beer Cafe and Father’s Office and Shaw Davey continues the theme of non pretentious, good quality, welcoming fun.
Great pub! Very busy on a Fri night. Lucky to grab a small table upstairs. Really like the look of it. Its a little bit retro. Couches and stool tables upstairs. $8 cocktails til 8pm! Mojito was really nice. Service was great. Really nice guys that looked after us. Menu was varied and a little different. They have a vegan menu too. Started with the Vegemite Calamari salad. Don't be put off. The flavour was so subtle that you wouldn't know. (I happen to like VMite). Calamari was cooked well and the salad was great. Got the Cheeseburger for main. Taaaasty burger! Patty was maybe a little overcooked, but big flavour. Friend had the Zucchini and Macadamia patty. She loved it! I was almost gonna order it when I read the menu! Nice to know that they've put thought into the vego option. Would absolutely return for a night out. Atmosphere, food and service. Spot on.
This place is perfect for broke uni students with the need for a local watering hole; there are always great meal and drink deals and the vibe of the place is lively and fun.
Came with friends (8pax) for dinner. Great value for money. Had steaks, fish n chips, etc,. Great food. Drinks are cheap, esp during happy hours. Will definitely return.
I tried their parma and burgers. The parma itself is a little bit plain. Therefore, parma served with pineapple and ham (Hawaiian) or avocado is tasting richer and better than classic parma (with just cheese on the schnitz, pay an extra dollar for a piece of ham). That piece of fried chicken in the burger is average, but with a hint of jalapeno in the burger, it's memorable. Food is alright, not entirely mind blowing. However, when this place also serves 1 dollar Champaign before 8pm, gives you a free pot with each classic parma order, makes good cocktails with great price, and most importantly has a wonderful atmosphere, it should be one of the places to be for chilling and drinking in Carlton.
Honest food at affordable prices. The waiters we're very friendly and the service was great. A great local venue in Carlton. The beers are cheap and there is plenty of space for you to park after a long day
This place has honestly one of the best bargains I have ever seen, a $10 jug of beer and a $10 steak? Hell yes! The steak was however pretty undercooked but I enjoyed my night there regardless. :)
Fantastic food, really friendly service. Loved the atmosphere and was really impressed with the quality of the food for the price. Locally sourced ingredients and all burgers under $14, highly recommended.
Love this place, so affordable drinks and food. Came here with a lot friends for dinner, all the burgers were amazing, great potato skins and arancini balls, steak was over done, but am definitely becoming a regular here
Don't let the ridiculous decor deter you! Shaw Davey has good drinks, good drinks and good staff. The fact that everything is very reasonably priced is a bonus. Also, they have a mix master on staff so the cocktails are fabulous!
Pleasantly surprised. Came here for a quick dinner mid-week and were pleasantly surprised. Great improvement to Pugg Mahones.
The food is very cheap, fast and good quality. Service was great and the fit out is interesting.
Will come back !
Great addition to Carlton. Despite the open space and hard surfaces this place was fairly quiet on a midweek night. Great value with the $10 specials and great to see craft beers included in the cheap drinks offer. Had a schooner of the terrific Three Ravens ESB for $5. Friendly, fast and efficient service. Don't know how they do it for the money, but hope they keep it up.
SERIOUSLY FANTASTIC PLACE. What is not to love about this quirky bar? The service, food, and drinks are for more expensive places, but the prices are cheap! $10 jugs and $6 spirits! C'mon!
Just amazing!. Amazing food, amazing drinks and amazing service!
Who can go past a $10 Parma? Especially one basically the size of the plate? Plus it was totally delicious! The sampler and the side of mac n cheese were also massive hits at the table!
The drinks list was extensive and very well priced.. And the service was excellent! All staff were very friendly, and would highly recommend this place to everyone! The menu had something for everyone, and I am looking forward to going back and trying the zucchini and macadamia burger!
Cool beginnings. Tried this place last. Food was good, especially the 'extended lunch specials' price at 8pm!
The main problem we had was that their heating didn't seem to be working. I felt sorry for the staff who were wearing tshirts. We had winter coats on and it was still freezing!
Will try again, cos the menu looks appealing. The Parma I had was big & tasty, and the staff were friendly. Also very happy to have a cheaper alternative to Kodiak for buffalo wings!
Now fix that heating!

I recommend you try it out! .... I recommend you try it out!
Great large venue. Really nice food! Fresh and reasonably priced! Drinks we're also not over priced!
Will definitely be going back again!
Best barman ever! Thanks Brendan for making my birthday so memorable. Experimental, creative and generous. Go get a peanut-the-slum-dog-martini, one of the best cocktails I've ever had!
The service was great - they really went above and beyond to ensure we had a good night. Cheap and tasty food and drinks, games available to play, not overcrowded. A perfect hangout place with friends
Had my 21st here, such an incredible night here it won't be forgotten. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, food was great and the drinks even better. Will definitely be returning again!
Love this place, awesome service, great drinks and nibbles! Bartenders are awesome, especially, Brendan, knows how to suggest a new drink! Keep up the awesome service and brilliant attitude!!
We purchased a scoopon which made the meal very good value for money. Staff were very friendly and attentive.
Entree was mixed platter with polenta chip, aranchini ball, buffalo wing and calamari. All items were very tasty and i really liked the variety.
Mains we ordered steak and chips. Steak was a little tough but chips were fantastic. Dish came with a small jar of aoli sauce which was beautiful.
Dessert we ordered the peanut butter cheesecake. It was ok, a bit hard and on the drier side but it had nice peanut butter flavour. Couldn't finish it as it was very dense and rich.
Overall, a good experience with good food. Would buy the Scoopon again to try other items on the menu.
Giant venue, amazing staff, good selection of drinks, hearty food, fun vibes when it's busy, chill vibes when it's not.
