We were invited to the Market Hotel to try their pop up truck menu. The month of September sees them hosting the satay truck which is really quite impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed my satay chicken burger and deliciously seasoned chips. The venue itself is also fun and quirky offering a wide range of craft beers. I actually can’t imagine why I’ve never been here before!
These legends are serving up made to order pizzas which are cooked in a wood fired oven for 90 seconds at 400 degrees to recreate a traditional Neapolitan-style crust with not so traditional toppings. These guys use traditional cold fermentation techniques for their dough, so you know the crust is right, and only the finest in-season ingredients. All of the wood used to heat their oven is foraged from fallen Gum and Box wood varieties in the wombat state forest, so not only does it taste amazing, it’s sustainable.

Our first time at the Market Hotel - I'm not sure how we've managed to miss it all these years living in the area! The interior is relaxed with a chilled vibe and the seating broken up in to different areas and little nooks. There's a pool table in the main bar area, and the music is quiet enough to hold a conversation.
This month they've launched a collaboration with Cluster Truck, where 6 different food trucks are taking over the kitchen, one a month for the next 6 months. Last night was the launch and we got to try foods from all 6 of the Foodtrucks, canape style. Everything was fresh and full of flavour with a good amount of variety to keep everyone happy.
The line up looks like this :
May - pearl of the quarter
June - Meat me here
July - Fugazi Pizza
Aug - the Pickle and the Patty
Sept - The Satay Truck
Oct - Salt and Pepa Food Truck
We're looking forward to coming back each month to try more of the dishes from each Food Truck kitchen
We go to the Market quite often due to it being around the corner from home. Staff are all lovely, drinks and food good. However they have live band on Friday which seems a bit too loud maybe something to do with acoustics. I wouldn't mind it later in the evening but 7.30ish seems a bit early.
Recommended to me by a local and wow.
Without a doubt the best pub food I have ever had. Renowned for their steaks I chose the ribeye with a side of chicken wings to devour on a quiet Sunday evening.
Chicken wings were cooked to perfection. Thinly coated in a light seasonal batter that was deeply coloured and addictive.
On to the steak, which was superb. Melt in the mouth, the huge chunk of meat was ever piece delicious. Well seasoned again, spot on medium rare and so juicy I had the bone in my hand at the end to get every last morsel. As for the gratin - probably the best I have ever had. Truly perfectly constructed, it was almost to pretty to put a knife through. Again, baked spot on.
As for the hotel itself, it’s a classic old pub, well looked after and a comfortable place to be. Lots of different areas to sit depending on your mood and back by friendly staff - albeit it was a very quiet Sunday evening. My meal was not cheap pub food by any means but then I didn’t get pub food either.
I see why my friend says, for him, it’s the best pub in Melbourne.
We attended a function at the Market Hotel recently and I am pleased to say that the service we received was exceptional. From the brilliant finger food, to the amazing cocktails to the wonderful service from the team, I couldn't recommend the Market Hotel highly enough. We have since become regular customers and love everything about it! The ambience, service and food never fails to impress.
Lovely pub, we sat at a booth by the window. Extensive and reasonably priced menu, very much something for everyone. They also do a daily lunch deal from select blackboard menu items and a pot of beer or cider for $15. Wines between the $9 - $10 mark by the glass. Great location to pop in after a market shopping trip.
Very nice fitout, plenty of menu options to choose from and we were both very impressed with our selections.
Bar was pumping for a Thursday night & staff did a great job.
Good pub grub - will be back for sure.
Came here for a beer and some live music entertainment. The hotel is beautifully decorated and fairly large. The beer selections were excellent, lots of different craft beers to choose from and the staff were helpful and knowledgeable. The food was delicious and we didn't have to wait too long. The band performing was really good. Had a great night here.
I went here for a work lunch. They have a good array of work lunch specials, which includes a cheeky beverage. It's pretty standard pub fare, I had the steak sandwich with egg, with chips and a beer. The steak itself was fine, it was a bit of a logistical nightmare eating the sandwich, with a popped yolk and it wasn't the easiest to slice and eat with your hands or with a knife and fork. I really don't want to be making love to a sandwich in front of my colleagues, so I may chose something more 'work friendly' next time.
My next visit I got the mushroom pappardelle which was very good, the serving was a bit small for me and needed some bread to fill me up.
All in all, this is good work pun lunch date. The turnaround of food orders was pretty good considering the large number of orders. The staff are friendly and attentive and the interior is clean and inviting.
Very surprise how good the food was. Very very impressed.
We got the tacos and a chicken Parma
Both were extremely good.
Nice ambient atmosphere for a Monday
When I heard that Star Bar, an establishment in which I had drunk away many of my younger and more debaucherous years, had reopened as “The Market Hotel”, the first thing I did was check the menu to see if they had a parma available. Low and behold, they had two! We wasted no time in loading up the parma bus and heading to Clarendon Street to see what
Had a great night here with relaxing vibe and delicious food! I think they were a bit under staff by the time we went there. It was packed but only 3 or 4 staff in the house. However, very friendly service and really delicious Paella I had. We enjoyed having drinks and food here.
What a great venue! I recently attended this venue with some friends and found the décor and staff warm and inviting. The food on the menu is worth noting - the taco plate is flavoursome, so much so, we ordered another round for my friends and I. The $25 bucket if wings and jug of beer is of great value and very delicious. It has come a long way from it's days as Star Bar. Well done, will return soon.
Had such a great time at the Market Hotel. Haven't been in 5 years since it was star bar. Love the set up its beautiful. Had the seasonal vegetable salad and it was amazing. Will definitely be back!
I went to a function here a few weeks ago and wow what a venue! The refurb is just amazing! I was blown away by the new interior and the roof top. The food was amazing ... so much so that i went back last Thursday for the $25 bucket of wings and jug of beer. Those wings are to die for! The staff are so friendly and efficient i honestly cannot fault the place. I'll definitely be coming back with my friends and work colleagues. Keep up the great work!
Best spot in the neighbourhood!!The refubishment is spectacular, love what they've done with the upstairs area. Definately booking my next function here.Food is delightful, along with the staff that serve it. Must try: taco plate / bucket of wings with jug $25Great atmosphere, chilled and plenty of entertainment, live music, pool and island-feel courtyard.I'll be back soon "M" ^_^
Had drinks and food here a few weeks ago and it was awesome, taco plate was delicious with our beers, great vibe and excellent service from the staff.
I went here with work mates the other day and couldn't believe how cool the interior was, the beer garden is awesome and good for watching the footy! We shared the taco plate and chicken wings. The servings were amazing and the food was super delicious! Our veg friend said the mushroom ragout linguine was beautiful too. Also loved the beer range, will be back for sure!
Went past The Market Hotel tonight and bagged a bargain - $25 bucket of finger licking chicken plus a free jug of beer - what a find! We'll definitely be back next Thursday. Great work guys, there aren't many other places in the area that offer such a tasty treats. And don't miss out on the taco plate.
Congratulations to the crew of The Market Hotel on the refurbishment. The place looks fantastic inside and out. On top of that the food is first class and great value for money. Such an awesome place to chill whether it's after work, for dinner or just a few bevvies with mates. The Market has a couple different levels so it's doesn't feel crowded, there's also a pool room and an epic beer garden. I was there recently for a work function and a lot of us had never been before. The platters of food were generous and tasty, the drink options were perfect and the music had everyone on the dance floor. It is now a favourite for a lot of us and our work Christmas party venue. I highly recommend checking it out!
Great venue with friendly staff and good selection to please most on the food and wine menu. Had the gnocchi and friend had the parma, both delicious.
Finally a venue with some charisma! The fitout is amazing and there are plenty of places to sit and chill, The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The chicken parma - typical pub grub was mind blowing. A nice serving and the napoli sauce was very yummy. We enjoyed our meal here. A place to revisit soon.
Nothing but love for this new venue in South Melbourne. The fit-out is absolutely incredible, really unique and with many different areas to hang out with friends. Recommend A++
