We were invited to the Market Hotel to try their pop up truck menu. The month of September sees them hosting the satay truck which is really quite impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed my satay chicken burger and deliciously seasoned chips. The venue itself is also fun and quirky offering a wide range of craft beers. I actually can’t imagine why I’ve never been here before!
These legends are serving up made to order pizzas which are cooked in a wood fired oven for 90 seconds at 400 degrees to recreate a traditional Neapolitan-style crust with not so traditional toppings. These guys use traditional cold fermentation techniques for their dough, so you know the crust is right, and only the finest in-season ingredients. All of the wood used to heat their oven is foraged from fallen Gum and Box wood varieties in the wombat state forest, so not only does it taste amazing, it’s sustainable.

Our first time at the Market Hotel - I'm not sure how we've managed to miss it all these years living in the area! The interior is relaxed with a chilled vibe and the seating broken up in to different areas and little nooks. There's a pool table in the main bar area, and the music is quiet enough to hold a conversation.
This month they've launched a collaboration with Cluster Truck, where 6 different food trucks are taking over the kitchen, one a month for the next 6 months. Last night was the launch and we got to try foods from all 6 of the Foodtrucks, canape style. Everything was fresh and full of flavour with a good amount of variety to keep everyone happy.
The line up looks like this :
May - pearl of the quarter
June - Meat me here
July - Fugazi Pizza
Aug - the Pickle and the Patty
Sept - The Satay Truck
Oct - Salt and Pepa Food Truck
We're looking forward to coming back each month to try more of the dishes from each Food Truck kitchen
We go to the Market quite often due to it being around the corner from home. Staff are all lovely, drinks and food good. However they have live band on Friday which seems a bit too loud maybe something to do with acoustics. I wouldn't mind it later in the evening but 7.30ish seems a bit early.
Recommended to me by a local and wow.
Without a doubt the best pub food I have ever had. Renowned for their steaks I chose the ribeye with a side of chicken wings to devour on a quiet Sunday evening.
Chicken wings were cooked to perfection. Thinly coated in a light seasonal batter that was deeply coloured and addictive.
On to the steak, which was superb. Melt in the mouth, the huge chunk of meat was ever piece delicious. Well seasoned again, spot on medium rare and so juicy I had the bone in my hand at the end to get every last morsel. As for the gratin - probably the best I have ever had. Truly perfectly constructed, it was almost to pretty to put a knife through. Again, baked spot on.
As for the hotel itself, it’s a classic old pub, well looked after and a comfortable place to be. Lots of different areas to sit depending on your mood and back by friendly staff - albeit it was a very quiet Sunday evening. My meal was not cheap pub food by any means but then I didn’t get pub food either.
I see why my friend says, for him, it’s the best pub in Melbourne.
We attended a function at the Market Hotel recently and I am pleased to say that the service we received was exceptional. From the brilliant finger food, to the amazing cocktails to the wonderful service from the team, I couldn't recommend the Market Hotel highly enough. We have since become regular customers and love everything about it! The ambience, service and food never fails to impress.
Lovely pub, we sat at a booth by the window. Extensive and reasonably priced menu, very much something for everyone. They also do a daily lunch deal from select blackboard menu items and a pot of beer or cider for $15. Wines between the $9 - $10 mark by the glass. Great location to pop in after a market shopping trip.
Very nice fitout, plenty of menu options to choose from and we were both very impressed with our selections.
Bar was pumping for a Thursday night & staff did a great job.
Good pub grub - will be back for sure.
Came here for a beer and some live music entertainment. The hotel is beautifully decorated and fairly large. The beer selections were excellent, lots of different craft beers to choose from and the staff were helpful and knowledgeable. The food was delicious and we didn't have to wait too long. The band performing was really good. Had a great night here.
I went here for a work lunch. They have a good array of work lunch specials, which includes a cheeky beverage. It's pretty standard pub fare, I had the steak sandwich with egg, with chips and a beer. The steak itself was fine, it was a bit of a logistical nightmare eating the sandwich, with a popped yolk and it wasn't the easiest to slice and eat with your hands or with a knife and fork. I really don't want to be making love to a sandwich in front of my colleagues, so I may chose something more 'work friendly' next time.
My next visit I got the mushroom pappardelle which was very good, the serving was a bit small for me and needed some bread to fill me up.
All in all, this is good work pun lunch date. The turnaround of food orders was pretty good considering the large number of orders. The staff are friendly and attentive and the interior is clean and inviting.
