After spending 140.00 Inc BYO I thought this restaurant is well worth it. 3rd time here with my family and as always food was fantastic.
Great restaurant and excellent service. Plates are replaced, fresh wine glasses are provided between bottles, and drinks are regularly topped up. The menu is different from your usual Chinatown cantonese - no beef black bean or sweet n sour pork to be seen. Still, lots of choice although note that the descriptions are literal i.e. unless the dish says it has vegetables, it will just be a dish of meat or seafood with a sauce. Other reviewers have said the portions are too small for the price point. It's true they are smaller, but the quality is excellent so I think the price point is fair. Also, nothing is greasy - for example we tried the salt n pepper calamari and fried rice, and they were just delicious without that greasy heavy feeling these dishes sometimes have. Licensed or BYO ($10 a bottle). In the entertainment book - 25% up to $35. Really highly recommended.
Wow what a find in Franklin street that do traditional canton food. Order the three course duck meal that has the duck soup, duck fried rice and peking duck wrap. I loved it
One of the best Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. They have quite an extensive menu. Get ready to get your hands dirty cause there's no way of eating these crabs without using your hands. The tea smoked duck in the sweet and sour sauce is also swimming in flavor. The service is good and the place is clean. Although it’s definitely not the cheapest Cantonese food in town but this place worth a try.
On a raining day that was slightly cold, hubby and I decided to head to this place for our date night. We a had the 3 course Peking duck deal. Luckily I did preorder when I called up to make reservations otherwise it would have been sold out! The deal entailed 12 pieces of pecking duck pancakes with all the right trimmings, stir fried duck noodles or rice and pipping hot duck bones and tofu soup. All 3 courses were absolutely delicious! The duck slices in the pancakes were thick and juicy with the skin still slightly crispy. The soup was nourishing and hot, just what I felt like on a cool day. The noodles were a bit firm but the flavours were still nice. If anything, I would request for reduce salt on the dishes as both the noodle and soup were more on the salty side. The waitresses were very attentive and did not hesitate to add some hot water to the soup when I requested to make it less saltier.
The place was packed when we were leaving. Will definitely be returning soon to try out other dishes!
Omg this place is so delicious! We ordered 5 dishes and all of them were great. I am still slurping over the seafood beancurd dish. Soft silky tofu with little prawns in egg gravy sauce. Yum!
Love this place! Really great roast duck with rice on casual days, but their sit down speciality: chilli crabs are a must get with the fried mantous
Extensive menu. Average price for what you'd expect from a family Chinese restaurant.
Beancurd fried in duck egg was done well.
Singapore noodles had good flavour, and the right combo of everything added.
Dumplings are nice, but not the highlight. Chilli dumplings was lacking in heat.
overall. it is okay la! but not the traditional chilly crab. tasted like sweet and sour chilly crab. We ordered 3 main courses, not too bad la.
This hidden gem is located in Franklin Street away from the hustle and bustle of the restaurants in Elizabeth St. They have an extensive menu and all the dishes we ordered were nice. The star of the night was the egg white dish. This seemingly simple dish have great chewy texture and seafood flavour. Will definitely come back again!
Been here a few times. The flavours and timing never disappoints. They have quite an extensive menu. The service is good and the place is clean. Although it’s definitely not the cheapest Cantonese food in town but this place worth a try.
The drawbacks- there are too much hard coverings and finishing around for a small space therefore the place can get quite noisy. Also the tables and chairs are arrange so close to each other basically there are no walk ways when the place is full.
Having saying that, I returned again and again. It’s just delicious.

Delicious Cantonese cooking. Reasonably priced dishes. Recommended: Shanghai Style Scramble Egg White with Crab Meat, Wagyu Beef in Black Truffle Sauce.
They do a great Singapore Chilli 🦀 here however the other dishes
* Salted egg yolk prawn
* Stir fried Egg Noodle with ginger & shallot
* XLB
We're quite underwhelming in terms of overall flavour & presentation. They lacked the richness in flavour that you would expect . Service was great but def better Cantonese out there.
Here is one of my favourite Chinese restaurants in the city - the location is a bit awkward though but cosy. I have tried number of dishes here and I am satisfied with most of them, especially Mapo Tofu, the best in Melbourne. Great service too that staffs are attentive and nice.
Decent Chinese restaurant for dinner. Abalone dish is tender with a nice thick sauce. Ginger and spring onion crabs are also a must have. Service is also quite friendly. Reason for the 4 is that the lunchtime menu and yum Cha is unfortunately quite mediocre. Based on dinner only it would be a 4.5. Will return for dinner again.
Dined with a friend here. Spring onion pancake was too salty. But chilli crab was delicious. Extra points for providing fresh and tasty crab with lots of meat. Steamed buns and fried buns were both enjoyable and mopped up the gravy satisfactorily. Mudcrab was $42 per pound and we had a 2 pound crab. Om nom nom! Gave a score of 4 for the fresh and sweet crab!
I've been to Sung's Kitchen a number of times and the food has been delicious and consistent. My favourite dishes are the seafood and tofu cooked in a claypot and the Peking pork ribs. We also tried the live Murray cod during our previous visit. The fish was tender and fresh but the price was pretty steep. Service is fast and efficient. My go to Chinese restaurant in the cbd.
Had lunch here yesterday. Ordered shredded beef, smoked fish, salted duck egg prawn and emperor pork bun. I love shredded beef! Always have it every time I come here. The smoked fish is very nice as well. The emperor pork bun is good but not that impressive. Didn't like the texture much.
UPDATE 14/05/2017
They are back to their "uniqueness" getting better and better ..... much braver.
The wine list is probably one of the best at the right prices too .. Tobreck, Petaluma, Balnaves, Sandalford, Moss Wood, Voyager, Cullen lots of WA and some private collections too .... but still ...
The RIGHT Cantonese food at the WRONG location .....
Unfortunately it is set up in WRONG location of Melbourne with RIGHT Cantonese food and tea range too. Near opulent setting, quaint and quite a relax, serene ambiance.
In short, from the many times we've been there, never a bad food, always good, above average Cantonese food with good quality of ingredients., well priced too.
Premium Chinese tea on offer, just pick the ones you like, clear glass teapot is perfect for those blooming Jasmine tea ball.
BYO (wines) too, can't go wrong.
good food, traditional chinese food not very busy, good service. came with my husband, love seafood. one must try the crab, amazing.
We didn’t really get full by eating the food in Victoria night market because most of the foods are quiet the same, so we decided to have a proper dinner after, one of my friend suggested this restaurant. He’s been to this restaurant a few times, he said it changed the owner recently, he cannot guarantee the taste, but after the dinner he said it taste as same as before.
We ordered few dishes, but I think the Sung’s style chili crabs are one of the best, it also come with fried bread roll, the source are extremely good and tasty, it totally out of my expectation.
The wonton chicken soup tasted awesome too, I think because I always love wonton and soup so much.
My friends like the grill beef rib, unfortunately, I don’t eat beef but I think the presentation was quiet good.
I’m a quite surprised by the quality of the food s from this restaurant, will come again.
Thank you
Been going here for last 10 years. Amazing mud crabs and service. Great ambiance too. Owners have changed, however some of the staff are still around. A great chinese restaurant.
One of the best Chinese restaurant in melbourne. Unfortunately, the chef is too old and they have decided to close the restaurant soon. I will miss this place very very much.
Surprisingly good restaurant with good food. Perhaps one of the best Chinese places in the city. Service was great. I would recommend this place to others
Being a Malaysian I'm skeptical whenever I hear mud crab is on the menu. But this place has the best mud crabs in the most delicious Chilli sauce. Get ready to get your hands dirty cause there's no way of eating these crabs without using your hands. The tea smoked duck in sweet and sour sauce is also swimming in flavor. A great place!
Love this restaurant. Came there so many times and never disappointed. Food was great although not cheap. Service is great. Must try their chicken soup. Barramundi and pork dish.
One of my favourite chinese restaurants! I have been coming to Sung's Kitchen for many years, food has been consistently good. Our standard dishes there include seafood and tofu in claypot, steamed fish, charcoal grilled steak etc. This time we also ordered beef brisket which was really tender and juicy, as well as egg whites with scallop, another of my favourite dish. They serve very authentic food, and excellent service as well which is hard to get in chinese restaurants in general. The only slight thing was that they only have one of the fish frozen, which they also let us know in advance before we ordered. If you haven't been before, make sure you drop by and give it a try!
One of the best Asian restaurants I have ever been too! I've been here multiple times and every dish I've tried is absolutely delicious! I even know their seafood supplier, who is the no. 1 supplier in Melbourne and has the freshest seafood. My favourites would be the smoked duck, wonton soup, emperor dumplings and mud crab with noodles. A definite must try!
We went to this restaurant with a friend for dinner. The restaurant had a lovely ambience about it and the staff were very friendly and obliging. The food was lovely but a bit pricey. This is a nice restaurant if you are looking for something more upmarket. Definately worth another visit next time we are in Melbourne.
Best out there. Everything is on point. No faults whatsoever. High quality and fresh seafood. I am friends with the seafood wholesaler and have been able to witness the fresh quality they offer. Can't go wrong with SUNGS KItchen :)
Very nice food, service, price and ambience. Fabulous.
The crab was huge and meaty - the flesh was soft and spicy food lovers would be glad to know they didn't hold back on the chilli - it sure packed a fiery punch.
Without doubt the best Chinese meals I have ever had

Dan Dan mian. I had the dandan mian from here on my sisters birthday and it was actually very good.
it did lack the traditional taste but more westernized taste was easy to get used to.
the staff was friendly, which was unexpected as this was a Chinese restaurant - no offense.
The price was not overly expensive but still not an everyday dinner price.
overall it was a pleasant experience with good food that had nice flavors and friendly staff that understands English -_-a
Great food without heading into the bustle of the city. Went there on a Sunday afternoon with the intention of having yum cha, but we had heard a lot about the famous Spicy Crab, so ended up going with Ala Carte instead.
We had the following: cucumber/sesame sauce noodle salad, emperor buns, spicy crab, crispy baby chicken and two chinese vegetable dishes. Food came out fast, but mainly because we were one of the first there. Salad was well flavoured and fresh, but I thought the emperor buns were so-so. Spicy crab was extremely yummy, but we agreed that the spicy sauce does take away from the natural flavour of the mud crab, so if you want to preserve that, probably go with the traditional ginger and shallots cooking method. Baby chicken was super crispy, but bit disconcerting to see the ACTUAL MSG crystals in the salt dip that came with it on the side. Vegetable dishes were extremely fresh and delicious.
All in all, it was great to find a nice, authentic Chinese restaurant without having to clamour into the city, fight for parking, queue with heaps of other people, be rushed out as soon as you have finished your last bite. Service was friendly, and prompt. Look forward to going again in the near future (might actually try the yum cha next time!)
Great place. This little gem is tucked away in a backstreet near Vic markets, but thank goodness, as I don't want to have to share it too much!
We've been coming for a couple of years, usually after a few Friday night after work drinks. The staff are welcoming and attentative, and don't push us to move on even when we've ended up being the last table.
The service and food are great for the price. It's not cheap chinatown but it won't break the bank and I've never had anything that wasn't totally delicious. Plus you get white tablecloths and great service rather than sticky laminex and ignored.
I keep coming back for the Tea Smoked Duck; but everything is so tasty.
I don't think the serves are small - we usually order a main each with rice and can't quite finish all the food.
They have an ok, although a little pricey, wine list but you can BYO, or they keep the tea coming hot and often.
Went to Sung's last night for the very 1st time .OMG is was amazing from the amazing food, friendly staff & amazing vibe. No need to go to flower drum -'s Sung's will leave u wanting to come back again & again . The spicy crab amazing, coconut ice cream awesome way to finish.
10 star restaurant and FANTASTIC. Great everything. Friendly staff and brilliant food. Definitely recommend. Cater for food allergies 10/10!!!!!!
Great Homestyle Chinese. I have been going to Sungs Kitchen for 5 years now and it never disappoints. The salt and pepper tofu, the spring onion pancake and the Emperor dumplings are my go to dishes and are always good. Realistic pricing, good quality food and welcoming staff Sung's doesn't disappoint. If this place was in Bourke St or Richmond and not tucked away in a non descript part of Franklin Street on the outskirts of the CBD it would be far more popular.
MUST TRY RESTAURANT!!!!!!!!!!!'mmm. The most favorite Chinese restaurant in Melbourne i had ever try., i came to Sung kitchen whenever i want some Chinese dishes. Love the spicy crab here so so much and also the service is so warm, always made me feel welcome. Big love !!!!!!!!
Always consistent!. We eat at Sung's around every 6 weeks. Sometimes the two of us, occasionally the family of 6-8 and then the gang of friends 6-10. This is a wonderful place for a great evening of good food with great company. It is not a Flower Drum and is small in size. Bookings on busy nights advisable. Chef is very capable and although the menu is pretty extensive if you want something not listed you can often ask and he will produce an amazing dish. Service can be variable but it is always friendly. Enjoy
Sing the praises of Sung's Kitchen. Sung's is the home of good quality Chinese food in the somewhat dead zone of Franklin Street's industrial end. The menu has all the classic dishes you would expect at a Chinese canteen, including crab, dumplings, noodles and rice with duck, pork, beef, seafood etc.
There's also an express lunch menu, with most dishes in the $9-$15 range and a good value two or three course deal. My fish and vegetables was a substantial sized serving of firm white fish in a delicate sauce, accompanied by broccoli and straw mushrooms, and a mountain of rice. It arrived sizzling hot about five minutes after l ordered on a quiet Monday lunch break, only three other tables occupied, but it gets much busier later in the week. Great quality and plenty to eat for $12.80.
Service was enthusiastic and prompt, although the younger waiter seemed a shy student who was new to hospitality work.
Totally recommended! I always come to sungs whenever I'm in Melbourne and the food is always brilliant. Just reading the menu is a great way to start the evening.
The plum sauce fish was extraordinary!!! Loved it to the T!! The crab in xo sauce was also stunning!
Elegant Chinee. My work sometimes organises special lunches at this restaurant (if the guys from Sydney or Brisbane come down or we hit some kind of target etc). We usually get a mix of yum cha items and fried rice. It is all very nice with great flavour that is very approachable for the Australian palate (I know we all think we are super cosmopolitan these days and want everything as authentic as possible, but seriously climate, trends and familiar flavours dictate what is going to work across the board). Anyway this is good even if you're used to the classic Chinese of places like the Wagga RSL or your local suburban Chinese that has been pumping out the good stuff since the mid 70s. It is approachable delicious Chinese.
Portions are a little small so order alot.
The lunch specials are not good value - just order yum cha or from the menu.
I have to agree with other reviewers here the spring onion pancake is excellent. I would like to add that the littel pork buns are a real treat too - I suppose you can't go wrong with a pork bun (unless you go to breadtop - blurgh!).

Fine Chinese food. One of the best tasting affordable (not cheap!) Chinese restaurants in Melbourne. I did not like the service as they would try to sell you peanuts during dinner, and it was minimum $20 per head on a normal weekday when the restaurant had only two tables filled with patrons... the dish served are quite different to what is served in normal Chinese restaurants of its class (i.e., Shark Fin Inn), maybe they are from different provinces? I'm not too sure..but my family loved the grandma tofu, shantung chicken, chrysanthemum fish.
Try the Spring Onion Pancake. Whenever I go to Sung's I HAVE to have a Spring Onion Pancake. I've been visiting on and off for around 5 years now, and have one every time. The price has crept up in my time, and some of the dinner dishes are quite high now.
I normally go for one of the rice or noodle boxes. A meat dish with rice, for around $13, or a noodle dish, around $11 - 12. These present better value to me as a lone diner than ordering individual things from a menu.
Having said that, there is a lot of choice on the menu, more than you initially think. Liking so many of the dishes on offer it can be hard for me to find just one thing to choose! There is also fresh seafood in tanks available for order, though I have not sampled this myself.
Eric, the previous owner/manager always made me feel welcome, remembered my name, and my favourite orders. The new management have not been as friendly, and I think the food quality has slipped slightly since Eric was overseeing things.
I therefore have somewhat of a tenuous relationship with Sung's now. I still like some of the dishes, though have that feeling that prices have gone up, and quality down.
Friends of mine recently asked me if I would recommend it, and I did say yes. Unfortunately they reported to me that they'd tried to order one dish each at dinner time, and were rather rudely told that there is a $20 minimum for dinner service. This is something to be aware of.
On balance, I would still recommend Sung's to people - certainly for lunch. At dinner time, be aware of your minimum spend. The food is still good, and you simply must try the Spring Onion Pancake.
Not your usual Chinese restaurant. The look and feel of Sung's Kitchen is of a more upmarket Chinese restaurant than the usual "cheap and cheerful" places in the surrounding area. I see from their website that the prices creep up a bit in the evenings, but the special lunch menu is pretty good value (at the time of writing, $16.80 for two courses or $20.80 for three, with 3 to 5 choices for each course). Most of the dishes referred to below are usually available as part of this special lunch menu. I've only eaten here at lunchtime so far.
My favourite dish is the spring onion pancake - very moreish. I can also recommend the Mongolian Beef and the Country Style Tofu with Vegetables for their rich, earthy flavours.
The fried salt and pepper calamari was crispy outside and tender inside, but a touch too salty. The steamed rice it's served with as part of the special menu went largely uneaten because it makes the overall dish a little dry and unbalanced - it's crying out for some kind of sauce.
The Chicken San Choi Bao consists of a generous serve of nutty, spicy minced chicken and vegetables, but is presented on a single stingy lettuce leaf, making it impossible to roll up into a parcel until most of the filling has already been eaten. This was such a disappointment, because most of the pleasure of san choi bao derives from the textural and flavour contrast between crunchy iceberg lettuce and soft, spicy, warm filling. It's also unnecessarily mean, because the lettuce is probably the cheapest component of the whole dish, and it really wouldn't break the bank for them to provide three or four lettuce leaves to do justice to the filling. Such an inexpensive addition would be all that is required to elevate this dish from just so-so to a highlight of the meal.
I've also ordered quite a few things from the yum cha menu. It has been a while ago now so I can't comment on specifics, but I remember liking everything I ordered.
They offer a selection of Chinese teas, often with a special "tea of the day" listed on the chalkboard with a comment about which benefit that particular tea can be expected to deliver. My favourite - both the tea, and the chalkboard description - was the lemongrass and jasmine tea, which was described as being ideal if you're suffering from "brain overload". I think we could all use some of that tea occasionally.
Leave room for dessert. I don't usually bother with desserts at Asian restaurants, because I'm not a fan of green tea ice cream or things made with bean paste. But Sung's has an extensive dessert menu, way beyond your usual lychees with ice cream, and it contains some really interesting and intriguing things, such as toffee apples with an Asian twist. (As well as green tea ice cream and things made with bean paste, if that's what you prefer.) And the desserts are beautifully presented, decorated with artfully arranged flowers - almost Japanese in their presentation.
It is undeniable that I love Fridays. One, there is no work the next day. Two, I get to catch up with my lovely friends. Three, I get to enjoy and share food and drinks with my lovely friends! One of my favourite Chinese restaurant has to be Sung's Kitchen ( 118 Franklin St , Melbourne ). With crab season almost over, Sung became our obvious dinner choice this week as all of us are working around the city area. The night started with a short drink at Golden Monkey with Mister (@Th0i3), Mr. L, Mr. A, Miss I & Miss W. There was a miscommunication and I ended up at Golden Mountain which is on the Spring end Of Melbourne CBD and had to walk all the past Elizabeth to get to my glass of white wine! I didn't mind the walking as I needed to clear my head after a pretty crap day at work. And I enjoyed walking down narrow Hardware lane. The buzz is fantastic. The music, the chatter, the waiters reading out the specials. So much live! So
This hidden gem is located in Franklin Street away from the hustle and bustle of the restaurants in Elizabeth St. They have an extensive menu and all the dishes we ordered were nice. The star of the night was the egg white dish. This seemingly simple dish have great chewy texture and seafood flavour. Will definitely come back again!

Good mix of western and authentic chinese dishes. Dishes weren't overly salty and tastes pretty good.
Service was good. Dishes came out reasonably fast.
Delicious food! Love the pork knuckle, roast beef, egg white scramble with scallop, eggplant and minced beef! Will return!
Had Australian Rock Lobster with Crispy fried noodles. Really Fresh & had WokHei! Roast duck was good too. Reasonable place. Great service.
Not your average Cantonese restaurant! Fancy menu but definitely can match Flower Drum`s quality with less than half the price!! Serious about good Chinese dinner, this is the place!!!
