Review Malaysian Kampung Restaurant - Melbourne

Jonathan Tan
Been coming here now for over 4 years, and has never let us down. Great authentic Malaysian food that is so close to home. Great flavours and the staff are always friendly. Get there early or be prepared to line up. When it’s very very busy there can sometimes be a wait for food.

MKR you have gained a new fan! Such an authentic and tasty Malaysian food, I had no idea about it until someone recommended this place to me. The five of us had all the followings: 1. Nasi Kandar Special - the best nasi kandar I’ve ever tasted in Melbourne. Very generous portion and really cheap only $19.9, one is too big for me and could probably feed two people. 2. Mee Goreng Mamak - also the best mee goreng, no exaggeration needed. Really good spice and heat level, can also taste the wokhey. 3. Nasi Goreng Mamak - not as great as the other two but my family enjoy it very much, kid friendly as it’s not as spicy 4. Roti Planta and Roti Telur Keju - perfect roti texture. Really cheap and tasty. Will be back for sure. I’d like to try nasi lemak next time.

Delicious authentic Malaysian restaurant. Nasi kandar is the best, generous portion and full of flavour. Nasi goreng is another delicious item on the menu. The place is not too big and can get very crowded easily. But you can always order for take away. Highly recommended!

The wonderful smell you get when you walk through the doors takes you back to the hawker stalls in Malaysia. The dishes are wondefully tasty and authentic. I had the fish curry, fried chicken and roti and both were yum 😋

The best Malaysian food in Australia! Everything’s delicious, been here every week since early 2020, never let me down! Friendly staff! Love it xx Weekly

Authentic and flavourful Malaysian food. Every single curry we had tasted amazing. Long line and limited seating so plan to takeaway if you’re in a rush.

The food is really good, staffs are friendly too! Gets crowded pretty quickly during peak hours. Def recommending this place to try out!

I’ve been to this place only twice but i’m completely in love! Being a Malaysian, I’m very particular about the flavours and authenticity of the Malaysian food I have, here in Australia. This place ticked all the boxes! Perfectly authentic and reminded me of home from the very first bite. So happy to have found this new place. They have Nasi Kandar and make Mamak food as well which is a hard find in Melbourne, really. Their Roti canai was just perfect! The exact thing I have been eating since I was a child. Their Nasi Kandar is literally the highlight of their restaurant, and again, tasted just like back home! Everything I have tried so far, has been delicious - their Nasi lemak, included. The staff are so friendly and provide great service. I will most definitely keep coming back here!

I have tried the Nasi Lemak Special and Chicken Curry Laksa. Both dishes taste authentic and rich in flavour! Very delicious! 😋

Will come back for:
+ Nasi Lemak
+ Roti Canai

Got takeaway from MKR for a bit of a treat. We ordered a whole bunch of dishes to share. We had the soup kambing (good but not great), nasi biryani, nasi lemak, roti canai, and martabak. I was partial to the nasi lemak which had great bright flavors from the chilli chicken and the coconut rice and the roti which was great to soak up the curry sauces. Flavoursome meals, but after a bit, all the meals seem to taste similar. Flavors are definitely heightened if the meals are hot. Good friendly service and reasonable prices.

I went there twice, once on a busy friday and the male cashier was nice and patient and he helped me find something on the menu. And the food was good.

The second time it was a quiet day but there was a female cashier- she looked like a moody teenager and the cook was grumpy. She got annoyed when i politely asked her to repeat what she said because she kept mumbling and was impatient when i looked at the menu - there wasnt even a line behind me. Didnt feel satisfied so i went to Nandos instead. Wont go back there again- the second night ruined it for me, and theres plenty of authentic Malaysian everywhere.

This place is amazing, the food the taste. I think its fairly difficult to find Nasi Kandar here in Melbourne and to taste fairly similar to back in Malaysia.

although one of the down sides are the long queue and wait times (yes they are different categories). Fortunately the nasi kandar is usually just the Queue to line up. But i reckon the food is worth the wait.

Really authentic Malaysian in Bentleigh. It’s hot, don’t wear your best clothes. You think you are in Malaysia. Had the Kandar with beef, cabbage and eggplant which is nice and spicy. A great experience. And if you are in to rosewater, try their drink.
It gets very busy when it opens when we went on a Saturday. there are queues outside and very limited tables and chairs. My suggestion is to go an hour after it opens. More likely of getting seating.

Visited this restaurant (or I should use the word - 'Eatery') the other day for dinner. Was super expectant for their nasi lemak and roti canai as reviewed by other Zomato users. Ordered the briyani special, nasi lemak with fried chicken, roti canai, roti telur, sirap bandung and teh tarik.

The sirap bandung was good, not too sweet and thick in texture. The teh tarik was as good as what they would serve in Malaysia too. Beef rendang was very good too! Highly recommended.

However, the rotis were a letdown. There was this doughy texture for the roti canai. Roti telur tasted better but I have tried better ones elsewhere.

Nasi lemak was a disappointment as the rice was basmati rice (sambal was delicious though), the basmati smell was too strong that I could not taste the coconut.

To conclude, if I were to be fair, I would go back for the beef rendang and the drinks. The customer service was good though (but they were very busy).
Alysia.song
Authentic Malay / mamak food. I always get the nasi kandar with either the beef rendang or ayam masak kicap. And they really do tarik the tea, not just use a sachet teh tarik. Tastes just like home!
SohzFoodTrail
Today's dig ... Malaysian local. The TehTarik and migoreng are a must try. Very authentic fresh good food. Highly recommended.

From the outside this little gem is not much to look at and if you weren’t paying attention, you could easily miss it such is this non assuming cafe/restaurant. However once inside, the place is buzzing with a line of hungry customers waiting to get their fix of traditional Malaysian village food. Kampung in Malaysian is village so expect food that is rustic and honest and no frills. I had the Nasi Kandur which is a plate of rice with your choice of selections if the day. I chose chilli chicken, eggplant curry and stir fried cabbage and said yes to home made chilli served as a topping on the rice. Every mouthful was a burst of flavour. The chilli hit from the mix of food was perfect. Not too spicy and not too mild. Order a cold Teh Tarik (Sweetened Milk Tea) to complement the meal. Good portions as well. You won’t leave hungry.

Most authentic nasi kandar in Melbourne. A must try, even if you have to drive an hour. 🙂

We were recommended by a malaysian to try this place and we were so glad about the recommendation. We just came back from holidays in Malaysia so we had high standards this place is had great food and well priced.

No frills just amazing Malaysian food. They do get quite busy here on weekends. The food is authentic and its close to ehat you get in Malaysia. We had the nasi lemak and it was really good, cant wait to be back to try their nasi kandar

I lived in Bentleigh for a year and passed along the restaurant every day but due to its location next to a car wash, I was never tempted to enter. It wasn't until a Malaysian friend recommended me the place when I decide to visit. What a miss for me for not doing it earlier! The best Malaysian food in Melbourne! They took me back to KL... I've tried almost all of the items on their menu and my personal stand out is the modest Mee Goreng.
Bear Noms
Authentic Malaysian food that hits the spot. Delicious nasi lemak with mouth watering handmade sambal. Perfect combination with peanuts, anchovies, and spicy chicken. Also loved the mee goreng which tasted great.
Lisa
Delicious food. Particularly enjoy their nasi goreng, full of flavors. Fish curry was amazing too. They offer a variety of roti, i am yet to try them all but so far, I enjoy all their freshly made roti.
Kei
We tried this place a second time and it didn’t change much. Nasi lemak was disappointing, sambal not quite right. Ayam mera also not quite right.

I did like their beef rendang though. Mee goreng was average.

Definitely, definitely skip their iced teh tarik. It was a really thick consistency - I’m honestly concerned as I’ve never seen anything like that before.
King
Been here twice now for the Nasi Kandar, absolutely fantastic.

Authentic flavours with generous portions, just keep in mind the fish curry is not boneless.

If you love curry ask them to "Banjir" your Nasi Kandar.

The Original MKR this place Serves up authentic Malay cuisine. A simple dine in (sits about 30ppl) / take out eatery satisfies powerful flavours and spicy cravings. The moment you walk in aromas of "Hawker" stall like hits you so probs best to not wear your Sunday best. Bit of a wait but dishes are cooked to order, fresh and worth every moment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📸: Nasi Goreng MKR, Nasi Lemak (Chicken)

You are not going to get better or more authentic mee goreng than the one at MKR in Melbourne. The nasi kandar is amazing, as well as the sup kambing and nasi lemak. Come here if you have taste for no frills, authentic Malaysian food.

A true Malaysian delight! Hidden within a car wash, MKR boasts its reputation with authentic, popular Malaysian dishes. The moment you walked into the door, that familiar wonderful smell of spice ‘floats’ in the air. Sure enough, their dishes were HOT! I ordered the mee goreng (extra spicy) & also nasi briyani with ayam masak merah :)
Terry Kong
What a place! Good food, nice flavour and friendly service!

Definitely recommended and will return.

Limited space. So be patient when it's peak hour!

Have not been a restaurant as authentic as this in Melbourne for ages. It's simple soul food and you will be transported to memories of sweating it out while stuffing your face at the hawkers/ kopitiam in Singapore/Malaysia. Sampled the best Mamak Mee Goreng I had in a long time and it would easily be one of best in Melb. Nasi Kandar was also delicous and while the range is on the smaller side, everything is so well done there are zero complaints. Avoid peak dining times if you want to grab a seat quickly and leave that wool jacket in the car.
GezaEats
Ugly delicious is what I will say when it comes to MKR food. Don’t be deceived by the appearance of their shop. Their food are packed with wholesome flavours that reminds me of home. For me mee goreng stood out the most - the spicy, smokey flavours which reminds me of home. Hideous it looks, thats one plate of happiness for me.

*disclaimer - the restaurant is perfumed with aromas of a hawker stall like in Malaysia or Singapore. Wear something daggy and don’t bring your first date there.
SRC
I must say it’s the best of the best when it comes to Malaysian fare- absolutely loved the mamak mee and teh tarik- reminded me so much of the hawker food stalls in Singapore and Malaysia. I’d highly recommend it. Very friendly staff, completely run by a family. The place is tucked in tight and the crowds are often but all this is irrelevant when you sit down and tuck in to authentic food at it’s best. Have to go back sometime soon to go down the list.

Absolutely wholesome food!

It's a little (somewhat hidden) gem that serves authentic malay food!! The best I have had since my trip to KL, Malaysia!

I've been twice and both times had the nasi kandar special - which you get choices of

-fish curry
-ayam masak marah (chili chicken)
-ayam madu pedas (spicy honey soy chicken)
-beef rendang
-cabbage
-eggplant sambal
-friend chicken/fish
-calamarii curry

mouth watering as I remembered how divine this tastes!!

Have also had the mee mamak, roti canai and roti cheese (which was surprisingly my favourite roti dish) I have driven 50mins + for this place so it is THAT good!! Just beware that during peak, there might be a bit of a wait for a table and its quite a tiny nondescript place but that means the food is bound to be incredible.

This time I tried the Nasi Lemak, and I have to say that is one of the best that I had on my life, it's a bit hot, but for my taste. I'm pretty sure that for the average person it's ok. Remember to bring cash. If you are looking for traditional Malaysian food, this place it's for you.
PW Lou
Like all great Malaysian eateries, the proof is in the food and not the ambience. The restaurant is simple and beside a car wash. It's basic chairs and tables.

However, the food - omg, so good. I went previously did nasi kandar and I was so full the food was great.

I've been back and had the mee mamak- the portion is huge and passable. Not as great as I hoped however still good.

I really enjoyed it here. Will be back soon.
Zen41
amazing place that serving authentic malaysian mamak food... not much options but you really can taste the home ....

not a big place and always pack during lunch time, good that you can go earlier.. definitely will go back more...
Jo
Authentic Malaysian food. If you are looking for a good feed, I would recommend this place. The nasi lemak, mee goreng and roti telur are our staple favourites. Plus that the staff are always friendly and the food standard always the same.
Food Hunter
Humble, authentic and honest home-cooked style Malaysian food. This has become our favorite stop of we miss Malaysian mamak food in Melbourne. In the dishes you can really taste their passion for cooking and they really count in their customers satisfaction rather than merely making business!
Saburiya Himel
The most authentic halal Malaysian food I have tasted in Melbourne. We tried the murtabak cheese, nasi lemak with red sauce chicken n the rose milk and all of them were authentically
delicious! Unfortunately this is very small and filled up quickly.
Sivajirajnibaasha
We ordered the Authentic Beef Rendang, rice and roti. The rendang is delivered first and looks just like an Indian curry, with just 5 small pieces of rather dry beef swimming in a lot of sauce. The sauce has quite a bit of flavour, none of the coconut usually associated with an authentic rendang (or nothing that I noticed) and absolutely no chilli. I actually couldn't believe the pathetic quantity of beef for the price charged. SUCH PATHETIC QUALITY OF FOOD. The Mee Goreng tasted like tomato ketchup and was not authentic AT ALL!! Instead, head to Taste of Melaka just ahead of the street. They serve amazing food with traditional and authentic Flavours. WOULD NEVER VISIT THIS PLACE AGAIN

Run and owned by two siblings who hail from Malaysia, this humble eatery has come a long way from when they first started.

Don’t let it’s plain facade fool you from the outside. They serve the most authentic nasi kandar and mi goreng in and around Melbourne by far.

Even back when Kayu Nasi Kandar, Boxhill existed years ago, they failed to live up to my expectations, but these guys here have certainly presented their culinary passion and true Malaysian flavours on the plate.

Their menu is concise and simple, even more so when they first started: with only nasi kandar and plain roti on offer during lunch time whilst the mi goreng was only available at night. Being mainly lunchers, that didn’t bother us because their nasi kandar had already won us over back then.

At least now, the mi goreng is available all day and there’s more variations of roti and Bain-Marie selections available.

The nasi kandar is still as good, but I must say I am now hooked onto their mi goreng after finally having the chance to try it yesterday. Their teh tarik has certainly improved, with a stronger tea note this time round.

The ambience is exactly how one would find themselves in a typical mamak shop in Malaysia - simple, casual, and nothing fancy. Just the way it should be.

As much as they are successful now, they have maintained the humbleness in them. Kudos!

A slight warning though: if you choose to dine in, you would most likely end up having your clothes smelling like the venue. But with such authentic and great tasting food, who cares right? We don’t.

If you're interested in trying authentic Malay / mamak (Indian Muslim) food that hasn't been tweaked to suit the local palette, head over to MKR. This humble shop in suburbia serves food that I grew up with and flavours that were straight out of my childhood. The nasi kandar is a choose-your-own mix plate. I had the ayam masak merah (chicken cooked in a delicious and spicy sauce), the sambal eggplant (warning: the amount of oil negates any health benefit but hey, it tastes good) and the turmeric cabbage (slightly healthier but still as tasty). If you ask for "nasi kandar banjir", they will scoop copious amounts of the different gravies over your rice MKR is run by a lovely couple and they are so welcoming and friendly, it feels like you're having a meal in their home. It's not a fancy restaurant but I'd definitely recommend MKR if you enjoy good food.
AC
It was our first time dining at this restaurant. It is a small simple restaurant with lots of wok aromas as one walks in. We went for lunch and ordered mee goreng (Malaysian fried noodles) and Nasi Kandar (rice with an assortment of daily specials similar to Indian Thali). The mee goreng was cooked to order and was delicious. The Nasi Kandar came with fried chicken, ayam masak merah (chicken in red sauce), curry calamari, fish curry, beef rendang, vegetables and half boiled egg. Nasi Kandar was like a tasting plate. They also have several variety of roti and murtabak on their special board. I was keen to try their soup kambing (mutton soup) but it is only available on Sundays. So definitely I will need to make a return visit.
Streaky Eats
Went here twice. First time got the nasi kandar with teh tarik. Overall was alright for me as much as I tried to lower my expectation (wasn't comparing to Penang's offerings), but I'm definitely grateful for a place to even serve this type of food. You also get a strong scent of ayam goreng rempah in the restaurant.

Teh tarik got off to a bad start. I was surprise that teh o ais or teh o wasn't available as they are the underlying base for making a teh tarik, which is just an addition of condensed milk, so technically you will have to arrive at teh o before making a teh tarik, unless it was an instant premix powder? That aside, the teh tarik tasted quite milky compared to the ones back in Malaysia (this drink tastes standard/consistent in every mamak in Malaysia and does not vary much).

Nasi kandar was alright, wasn't a big fan for the restaurant's choice of rice. The fried chicken were cut in small odd pieces and did not taste how it smells in the restaurant (that ayam goreng rempah scent). Curry was alright. The cabbage I felt could be cooked a little softer.

Second visit got the nasi lemak with ayam masak merah. This visit was a very long and frustrating wait as they were out of ayam masak merah and the wait was quite extreme (we were not advised it was going to be this long, bout 45mins - 1 hour). Again, wasn't a big fan with the choice of rice but overall the dish was good.

Great malay local cuisine , chicken ayam merah was juicy and tender with sauce to die for, beef and fried chicken was crispy and fragrant too. Teh Tarik was delicious and not too sweet and spiciness of food was great reminder of home in Singapore and Malaysia, highly recommend with owners Nisha and Siti giving generous portions and taking pride to serve great food cuisine for students and locals all over Melbourne coming to try. Highly recommend.

FAST Review: MKR (Malaysian Kampung Restaurant) in Bentleigh

FOOD - The must have dish = Nasi Kandar Banjir with Ayam Masak Merah (Chilli Chicken), Fish Curry, Rempah Fried Chicken & Eggplant Masala. Mamak Mee Goreng, All the Rotis Tisu to Thosai & Nasi Lemak. Drinks - Teh Tarik extra hot, kurang manis (less sweetener) - 4.5/5

AMBIENCE - Simple place, akin to eating at the Subway at the Shell Station. Put it this way you won’t be taking pictures and sending them home to your family of the shop background. However, it feels like home and you’ll always meet someone from home ie. Penang, KL, Malacca, Sabah/Sarawak or JB with their foreign guests - 2.5/5

SERVICE - Very friendly owners Kak Siti and her lovely staff. Delivery of food getting more efficient each time I return, especially the drinks which used to take a long time - 4/5

TOTAL - Bottom line is you come here for the Nasi Kandar and there is nothing else this side of the South East. Enjoy! - 11/15

TOP TIP - Located beside a Car wash on Centre Road, beat option is to park in the nearby Woolies across the road.

Hole in the wall restaurant tucked away next to a carwash. we came for lunch, and it was so busy we had to wait for a table. We got the nasi kandar special (beef rendang, fried fish, chilli chicken, cabbage, sambal eggplant, fish curry), nasi lemak with chicken and a roti canai. Everything was delicious. Just really tasty, home cooked food for a great price.

We had nasi kandar , nasi lemak, roti telur and teh tarik . It was all absolutely yummy . My husband, my kids and I are totally coming back for more . Freshly made from scratch roti was an absolute plus. Eggplant sambal was so very delicious. Teh tarik served piping hot . My nasi kandar came "banjir" - flooded with delicious fish curry. Owner and staff were very friendly.

It’s my second time at this humble little restaurant. Absolute favs are Nasi Padang - mix of any dishes in the bain marie (here I had fried fish, eggplant sambal and chicken), beef rendang, murtabak and of course Kambing soup. So yummy that I’m happy to drive there anytime!

Ps: ventilation is bad so you’d smell like the wok after lunch. Oops
TommyTucker
Authentic mamak mee goreng and Nasi kandar. None of the soggy noodles you get in so called Malaysian restaurants. Friendly service. Yes the place is simple but hey, this is what you get back home.
Finally managed to get lunch at Malaysian Kampung Restaurant yesterday after hearing about it since ages ago. True enough, they serve up some of the best, most authentic, humble food for reasonable prices.
I was a little disappointed that they didn't have roti prata/canai that particular day/time (Good Friday), but Vic had the nasi lemak with fried chicken, and I had nasi kandar with sambal eggplant and fish curry... And it was so goooood.
We will be back!
Littleguy11
To the guy who gave the previous review. What has other people's children and their discipline got to do with the food that the restaurant serves. You obviously don't have your own kids as your not very empathetic.
Back to the restaurant, I got take away last week. I went with recommendations and thought the food was very nice. There wasn't anything I didn't like. Only thing I can say was the food is in Bain Marie so was not hot enough when I got home.
Place has basic decor so don't have high expectations. Place was packed with People and I was the only Aussie which I think is a good indication of quality and authenticity of food. I will be back.
David Weng Yew Wong
average at best ... not much variety to choose from ... very noisy with children screaming (yes screaming) and parents not doing anything to stop them
Dorathefoodexplorer
Sounds cliche but they do basic food incredibly well! It’s cheap, big servings, great people and a real homely vibe. Been here a few times and it seems they are always plenty of Malaysians eating here, obviously an indicator of how good the food is. It is quite a small place so it can get packed pretty quickly and they do take way too so it can get very busy. Be patient though, the food is worth the wait, had the nasi lemak a few times and the fish curry and they are delish!!!!
Paul Templeton
I can only confirm what many previous reviews have said. Excellent food at good prices, friendly people, I was the only non-Malaysian there, the restaurant was otherwise full with Malaysians who obviously know where to find great authentic Malaysian food.
Charlie Ley Wai Koong
Nice food. Very authentic!!! You won’t regret. Will definitely come back again. We enjoyed the food very much and can’t complaint about it. Good good good.

Great place to get your nasi lemak.
Authentic food and vibe.
Friendly service who are interested in your eating pleasure.
Definitely recommended

A simple looking eatery with a small menu to choose from but dont be fooled by it all. Sometimes good food are best found with such places. We got here late at about 8:30pm and they close by 9pm. The staff were still obliging and allowed us in to make the last order. My group ordered the Mee Goreng Mamak, nasi lemak with Ayam Goreng and a Nasi lemak with Beef rendang. All of them were tasty and authentically done. The Mee Goreng was nicely done as it maintained its splendid taste throughout the meal. Being hungry at the time meant the meal went down fast. My only regret was not ordering more before they closed the kitchen. Once again I had a teh tarik for a drink and it went down really well with the Mee Goreng.

This is a great little place with a ample seats and ample parking right by the store. Prices are cheap compared to similar restaurants that serve these dishes. Affordable prices with quality food, one certainly has little to complain about. Fully recommend checking this place out if you are ever in the area.

I wish I could rate Siti and crew a 10!
Where do I start....
Wow for Mamak Mee Goreng
Wow for Roti Canai
Wow for Nasi Kandar
Wow for Ayam Berempah
Thank you, you make me less homesick with your amazing food.
Came here for dinner with visitors from Malaysia. Visitors were v impressed with the food - v authentic. Had the chicken curry, lamb rendang, cabbage, and a couple of others.. Additional side dishes were mee goreng and roti telur ... all v delicious. V reasonable prices indeed.
Will be back. Definitely recommend this to all.

Ratio decidendi: MKR offers authentic home made roti for south-easiders who aren’t up for the drive/train ride to Mamak in the city. The main issue? The wait can be agonizingly slow, as the kitchen churns out roti at a glacial pace. Out of all the variants we samples, the murtabak was the only real standout that I would return for. Crispy roti filled with moist and flavorful chicken mince, it providing a satisfying end note to our meal.

Drove 30 minutes to get to this place. Was it worth it? YES!

What to expect?
Very good mamak-style Malaysian food.
Typical mamak-style service, which is more than adequate i.e. don't expect fine dining experience.

Authentic?
Right up there.

Decor?
Irrelevant. When stuffing face with food this good, one does not take notice.

Will I come back?
Again and again!

Nice little restaurant that gives a vibe of home cooking, cheap eat with delicious food, mild taste for those that can't handled the heat. We ordered nasi lemak with beef rendang, roti chanai and tea tarik. They were so good that we forgot to take the photos. Recommend them all, love the sambal.
Iswari Thirumurthy
The mee goreng was super delicious!!! The family who ran the restaurant are very friendly and it's a cosy atmosphere. Best to follow their Facebook page to know more about their specials of the day. And also best to come during lunch and dinner time and they have a break time from 2:30-5
Willtravelforfood17
When we got there at 7.30pm they were already running out of food - we ordered nasi with ayam masak merah and soup kambing. The soup kambing was really good. Hard to find soup kambing here and done well too. It was flavourful and did not have a strong goatey smell one may expect at all. The ayam masak merah though was a little dry and too sweet. I will try other things next time.
Saladzzz
A Malaysian restaurant that serves authentic Malaysian food. It was crowded with Malaysian during Friday dinner time; and we know this is the place we are looking for! Staff were very friendly and polite. We ordered two roti canai, a murtabak, a nasi lemak and a teh tarik. The roti canai is a must to try and it's the best I've eaten in Melbourne; far more better than Papa Rich. It's crispy and freshly made. The murtabak was filled with delicious spicy chicken and my husband was very happy with it and the teh tarik. The nasi lemak was just ok. As the restaurant was busy there was a long wait for the food to arrive. Wish they could provide more drinks in the list. We will come back again to try out the mee goreng.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/melbournemakanmakan/permalink/1754355677925661/

06 August 2017: MKR is the eatery in Bentleigh you wanna go to if you love Malaysian mamak food. From nasi lemak to mee goreng, from tahu goreng with peanut sauce to sup kambing (goat soup) this IS the place. All very authentic mamak with some saying they taste better here than in Malaysia

100% Malaysian mamak food.

The food is reasonable, don't expect any 1st class waitrees services. Mamak price, mamak service. Food is 100% taste delicious. I visit nearly every week, sometime have to q up to order food, yum yum

Super delicious Malaysian cuisine authentic , great service . Mee goreng is so delicious and other dishes such as Nasi lemak too...

Teh tarik is yummy too ... bring back memories of Malaysia mamak dining
Sandy Kaur
Amazing food! Seating/ambience is basic but who cares when the food is so good!! The family running the place is so sweet and generous. Have had their Mee Mamak and Nasi Lemak; have to admit that I have not had such good Mee in the whole time I've been in Melbourne & the sambal that comes with the Nasi Lemak resembles the sambal I used to have back home.
Laine Lee
Very humble place with limited choices of food. But what u pay is what u get. Nasi kandar with beef rendang was relatively palatable but would prefer if their spicy level could go a little wilder. Fish assam pedas was a bit bland. I would still come back to try their nasi lemak cos the price is affordable.
Rori Abey
Authentic Malay food, good nasi lemak and the most delicious roti canai I've had in Melbourne! Great place for take away as the restaurant itself is quite basic and not well ventilated. Overall though we've become regulars for take away at this family run restaurant due to the friendly service and yummy food.
Ilovefood13
Small family run business with friendly owners. Prices are reasonable and don't break the bank. Roti was freshly made and yum (we had both the plain and egg roti and even my fussy daughter finished one entire egg roti).

Also tried the nasi lemak with fried chicken (my son said the chicken was a little on the dry side but ok) as well as plain rice with dishes (beef rendang, fried fish, cabbage, calamari curry, chicken). Really enjoyed the sambal as it had anchovies and not too spicy (I don't mind it being more spicy but I guess others might not like it as much if too spicy). Mee Goreng was ok too. Teh Tarik was nice too and at $2.50, I can't complain.

Good find especially since it's nearer to home than many other similar places. Will be back.
Adhya
I am so happy to found this place have a very nice and authentic Roti. The roti is fresh, fluffy, warm and just delicious. Portion are huge and price is great. I have tried Roti, Kandar Rice, Mamak Mi Goreng and Nasi Lemak with Beef Curry. I wish beef curry can be cook for a much longer and less sugar, because its chewy and bit too sweet.

Have been driving past this place a lot but was hesitant to go in because it's next to a car wash and Asian massage joint. But decided to go it a go and lucky we did. Wife ordered the beef rendang, which tasted really great; they're style is more of the dry beef jerky than saucy types. I ordered the meegoreng, which was good as well. The roti and tea was outstanding too! Would definitely go back again.

Not all shops selling Malaysian food are created equal. Malaysian Kampung though small in size and menu offerings, delivers a punch that's way above its class. I had the nasi kandhar (Malay mixed vegetables & rice) with ayam masak merah (spicy honey chicken full of caremilised onions and flavorsome chicken) and fried cabbage, with an assam fish gravy. Very authentic in taste and reminded me of the mamak shops i frequented in Malaysia & Singapore. Friendly owners. Small shops are doing it tough nowadays and with cheap, tasty food and friendly service I hope it sees good patronage in the years to come.

We had a pretty good experience with lovely food & friendly service. Highly recommended! Only open for about 3 months, give it a try, you might find something you like.

Nasi Briyani with Ayam Masak Merak
> I think it was quite authentic and delicious. Only available on weekends. Warning: very spicy :)

Mee Rebus
> This was nice too. The gravy is thick and a little spicy. I believe there are some other versions, very much depends on individual preference. This was a weekend special too

Roti Canai
> we like it as it was fluffy with delicious curries, especially the yellow lentils & sambal

Beef Rendang
> Yum Yum Yum! The balance of the spices were pretty good. Most of the meat was tender but some a little tough. Next time, we might need to request for the tender beef.

Teh Tarik
> we love it too, nicely brewed and quite milky. Personally I would prefer to have higher intensity of tea. Just a personal preference.

I believe the owner/chef cook with lots of passion and love. Hope they will keep up with the food standard and customer service.

Very nice and friendly family. Ordered Nasi Lemak, Mee goreng , roti canai and assam pedas. Not forgetting Teh Tarik. all looks yummy. Love their roti canai and mamak mee goreng.Teh tarik was good. Sad. They did not have teh halia. Did not enjoy the other food as much.

There's a lack of authentic Malaysian places in the Bentleigh area so I was very interested to try this place.

I have been there a few times now and have been impressed each time. On my visits I have tried Roti Chanai (with and without egg) and the Nasi Lemak (with Beef Rendang). The Roti Chanai is delicious and freshly made to order, served with a few small sides of dhal and spicy sambal. For $5 it's an absolute bargain and a very tasty snack if you're looking for something small.

The Nasi Lemak was also great, with all the components working really well together. Great value too.

It's a family run business and the owners are very friendly and accommodating. A few businesses have come and gone in this location over the years, but I'm hoping this one will stand the test of time. They serve great homely food at a great price and deserve to do well.

Have been very curious about this place... have driven past it sooo many times. An Indian Malay joint with a very local feel. Ie. family ran. Had the mamak mee goreng and the nasi lemak beef.. the mee goreng I really liked. Spicy 🌶 and not sweet. The curry beef with the nasi hmmmm was a bit tough and sauce watered down. I guess for such a low price point can't complain!! will come back to try something else. Worth a revisit I think to support a family ran business. Well one more time. :)

The roti is really good. Freshly made. We have also tried the nasi lemak, the murtabak and mee goreng which was good. Unfortunately the one time - we ordered a fried fish and one of the pieces was smelly and not very fresh - wasn't able to eat. But generally everything was pretty good if you like some kick of spice to your palette and the staff are really nice too.

Good place for authentic Malaysian food. Nasi Lemak with beef rendang was perfect! Though I may like the sambal a little more spicy, as it's a little on the mild size. The fish is nice. Everyday menu is a little different so don't expect fixed menu. Is quite cheap too, 3 dishes with side fish and side cabbage around $34. Very full and satisfying for 3 of us.

Authentic homestyle local flavours. Place is nothing fancy, just a simply outfit with seating for 20max. Owners are friendly & personable, chatting up regulars. It is completely full at meal times. We tried their nasi briyani, beef rendang, nasi lemak, murtabak & teh tarik. All quite satisfying. The murtabak was quite dry & portion small. I liked that the teh tarik is not too sweet. Meal for 4 under 40, super value for $!

Words cannot describe how disappointed I was. Went there for family dinner as we wanted local Malaysian.

Visited on a Friday night, we booked in advance to advise them we were a group of 8. When we were order the staff was rude. One staff told us about a fish special which we ordered, then to be told it was sold out. then it wasn't and it was. Very confusing staff.

The food was very salty and portions were very small. For the price point we paid, I think I will stick to Papa Rich in the future.

We also had a dispute with the portions of steamed rice we ordered. We had ordered 5 portions and when the bill came they charged us for 16. We were not told that they were refilling our rice. We disputed it with them (over $5) and they were just rude and said we should have known better or asked before eating the rice.

Never going back

Best mee goreng in town. Ayam masak merah and sup kambing instantly brings you back to Malaysia the moment it hits your taste buds! Recommended to anyone who misses original Malaysian mamak delicacies.

Malaysian Kampung Restaurant does not have a huge menu but they do have a small menu they are very good at! We ordered the Nasi Lemak and the Mee Goreng Mamak. Both hit home for us! It was simple but so satisfying... The sambal for the nasi lemak was not super hot (which I would have preferred but surely that's it for everyone) and quite flavoursome. We ordered level spicy for the mee goreng and that was a good level of spice. It was not soggy and well fried with a good amount of "wok breath" to impart the smoky taste to the mee goreng. It did take us back a little, like eating in a Malay/mamak shop back in Malaysia. We will definitely be back on a Sunday where they have some specials up for offer: sup kambing (spicy goat soup), mee rebus and nasi Briyani! Can't wait!

Good, honest Singaporean-style Malay food. The beef rendang is amazing, as good as any you'd find in Malaysia or Singapore with a complex melange of herbs and spices, including cloves, cardamon, ginger leaf, lemongrass, cumin. The roti canai is flaky and good for mopping up the dhal lentil curry, but a bit light on ghee, which is probably a healthier option. If you like your noodles with full-on flavour, don't pass on the Mee Goreng Mamak... hold on to your tastebuds!

Very authentic Malaysian food. We had their Nasi Kandar lunch set, roti canai, roti telur, roti bawang and teh tarik. Really delicious!

Too bad I live in Bundoora and its quite a travel across town to Bentleigh, if not I'd be a regular for my Malaysian fix!

What a great little local find. The owners are still finding their feet but I have to say the flavours are bang on. We enjoyed nasi lemak for lunch and it was a great version of a classic. One with a beef curry in soy, and the other with dry chicken curry. Both had a great depth of flavour and the chicken in particular was alive with chilli. Which is what we like. The usual cucumber, egg, peanuts, coconut rice and ikal bilis accompanied the protein. The ikal bilis was freshly fried and superbly crunchy! The owner asked if we'd like to try some of the fish curry (displayed in the bain-marie) on the side. We said "yes please!" and that too was a delicious coconut milk-based wet curry. We also tried the roti canai. To our surprise and delight it was freshly made and served with dhal and a a fish based curry sauce that also was zingy and tasty. The only thing missing from the nasi lemak was a pickle element, which is my only nit-picking negative comment. We polished off our plates and wandered off down Centre road with happy tummies, knowing we'd found a great local gem.
