Looking for some good Japanese my partner and I went back to Shujinko again on Flinders St.
The service is still extremely friendly and welcoming. We started w some really yummy chicken karaage was which disappeared before my very eyes hahahaha.
My ramen dish was called Kazan Volcanic Ramen. Whoa, my first mouthful took my breath away hahaha woo hoo!
This dish had sliced pork, half an egg, bok choy, and a range of other delicious ingredients.
The broth was rich and warm and full of flavour. And at $15.50 it was great value, given that I was soo full, but very happy afterwards.
My partners ramen was demolished so this restaurant remains a personal favourite for both of us!
Oh and I almost forgot, my stem dry Hakutsuru Tanrei Junmai sake was sooo good. It’s light, served cold and so refreshing, at all times hahaha.
If you haven't been then your missing out!
Original review October 2018
I was very fortunate to be invited here tonight. This restaurant opposite Flinders St station is amazing!! Finally a place that is open all night long, yep, 24/7. Thank you!! I love the fact that you can get something to eat that is fresh, and cooked to order. Gosh I’ve missed this authentic Japanese food sooo much. This is my kind of food! I tried a peach sake drink w jelly. OMGosh yumm. It had a mild sweet peachy flavour w jelly. Wow! Yes, yes yes hahahaha l.
My partner and I started w some Takoyaki which was delicious, just perfect. We had some tofu salad which was great. My ramen had an amazing broth, pork belly, and some tasty noodles. It was perfect. Gosh. And the bowl was about 2 litres deep, so big you could almost swim in it hahahaha.
My partner had a rice dish and if we weren’t in public I’m sure the bowl would have been licked clean lol
Enough said, this place is a must visit!! Anytime of the day, or night!!! Yay ... I am definitely going back, and if you want to know what Japan is like, this is it. Enjoy.
Shujinko serves up pretty decent ramen. I've been here a few times now and tried both the tsukeman and signature ramen. Both were flavoursome and a good portion size. The broth for the dipping ramen was the right consistency to stick to the thicker noodles

A great spot for late night ramen in the city
The interior feels like they've tried to bring a slice of Japan to Melbourne. There are a lot of seats in the restaurant
FOOD
Gyoza: I love when there is a small sheet of fried skin that connects all of the gyoza, it feels a lot more authentic. The gyoza themselves had a tasty filling, and the skin was nice and soft.
Classic ramen: A thick broth that was full of umami flavour. The ramen was cooked nicely. I liked the slightly charred flavour of the pork that was on top. The ramen egg was very nicely cooked, and had a great flavour to it.
The service was polite
Food: 4.5/5
This is my favourite Ramen place in Melbourne so far. Massive portion sizes, great taste and decent pork slices.
Ambience: 3/5
The look is very nice however if you go by yourself at a busy time you get squished very close to other people doing the same thing which makes it a little hard to eat
Service: 3.5/5
The service is quick and they don’t take long to deliver your food, occasionally they forget your drink.
I have been here a number of times with my friend on our lunch break. We've always had a good experience however, the service here could be better.
Nonetheless, I've tried the vegetarian croquette, the Shujinko Ramen, the Miso Ramen, the Tsukemen and also their Yaki Ramen (which is dry, just like fried noodles). The food has always been good and the prices are pretty decent for what you get.
Their Matcha Ice cream is also super delicious. It's the perfect dessert to be honest - worth it.
Open til really late and always hits the spot when I am in the city on the weekends! I always crave these noodles when I have been out drinking !
Shujinko has another franchise outlet and they have been very smart in selecting such a great location close to Flinders Street Station.
🔆LOCATION🔆
Conveniently located on Flinders Street near the corner of Elizabeth Street. This precinct was in much needed uplift and having a Japanese Ramen restaurant here is great addition especially as its so close to the train station and so easy to locate and get to.
🔆SERVICE🔆
Very friendly staff. As I walked in, I was greeted very warmly and seated promptly.
There was bottles of water on the table already, however no glass. It took a while for the waitress to bring a glass, and when she did it was filled with water which was very nice service.
🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
I thoroughly looked through their menu and I couldnt see any lunch special. I asked the waitress if there was a lunch special menu and she said no there isnt any. That is disappointing as for 1 person its difficult to order more food as its such a waste however with lunch special at least there is small portion of entree to include with ramen which would have been nice. Perhaps this can be considered in future.
I decided to order the: Shujinko Ramen, $13.80
(Signature original ramen in tonkotsu soup base (pork broth). Serve with bok choy, spring onion, bean sprout, marinated egg, and signature grilled pork belly.
🔆VERDICT🔆
The ramen noodle was cooked to perfection, it was not overcooked, the ramen noodle was chewy in texture but just well cooked through to enjoy with the soup broth.
The grilled pork belly was of a decent portion as there were 2 thick pieces which is great. So much better than other ramen places where the pork is super thin. One of the pork belly was really overcooked and hard to eat. However, the second pork belly was very soft and tender with good flavour. There is inconsistently in the cooking of the pork belly which is disappointingly as I love eating pork.
The pork broth had really good flavour, the addition of the bok choy seem unnecessary and odd as its not traditionally included in ramen and to include black fungus instead.
Overall enjoyable meal and will be back to try others.
Ramens of Shujinko are always good.
I tried new menu, Tonkstasu.Tonkatsu menu was really good! One of the best lunch I've ever eaten in Melbourne.
Great tasting broth and ramen noodles here. I got the shujinko ramen. The tonkatsu soup broth is very flavoursome and the ramen noodles were chewy and smooth.
The soft serve ice cream..matcha and black sesame were really strong in flavours too. Good value!
Went looking for a nice ramen place on a cold night. Found this place my accident and it turned out to be pretty good. I recommend the Karakuchi Ramen, the noodles were chewy and soup tasted pretty good, it wasn’t too salty, spicy or garlicky either. I would have liked my soup a bit more hotter but that’s just me (I like soups at burning point). The gyoza were nice too, could of been a little more crispy on the side but the flavour was there. The peach jelly sparkling Saké is so delicious, definitely try it if you like fruity alcoholic drinks.
Quite like this ramen place. Visited the shop on russet st once and didnt remember liking it this much. Had a plum flavoured sake to start with, really yummy sake! Food we had the chips on the side, I had the chicken and pork rice, friend had the ramen. Both very yummy! Not too busy either which is an add on!
Nice place for quick ramen at reasonable price! Portions are huge. The pan fried ramen was good. The dipping noddles werent as good. Eggs were yummy too.
Kind staff and good quality food, I had good experience for Japanese ramen in Shujinko. I had tried ramen in Tokyo 10 years ago. I did not like Japanese Ramen because of too salty, but Shujinko ramen is not too salty and just good flavour.

The 24/7 ramen chain Shujinko has been rapidly expanding and is up to their third store when we were asked to visit, of course we couldn’t say no. Located on Flinders St and opposite Flinders Street station, it is in a very busy spot but that means there’s plenty of foot traffic hence a lot of business. Inside isn’t the biggest eatery but it was very cosy and the staff are superbly friendly.
:::Invitational::: 3.4 star
Another invitation to dine at Shujinko’s newly open flinders st store. Beautiful Japanese izakaya style ambiance. First we ordered their Shujinko special chips- was crunchy and had bit of a bite to it, may not be authentic Japanese but gives that Shujinko twist to it. Second was the Gyoza nice tangy flavour harmonise well with the meatiness of Gyoza was good. We ordered the Black Ramen, which has plenty of “katsuyo” taste(Japanese dried bonito flavour) with some sesame and garlic taste. Pork (charshu) was grilled has somewhat harder texture to it than the usual melting in your mouth pork slices offer in typical ramen restaurants. Staff were attentive and friendly. Overall I would say Shujinko offers Japanese Izakaya experience with their twist to it more towards Korean flavours. Ramen has many different styles and Japanese Ramen scene in in Melbourne now more competitive than ever with multiple authentic Japanese chain ramen shops popping up & it really depends what the customer looking for. Overall price, taste, food quality, service and ambiance contrast to price gives an overall score of 3.4* out of 5.
Shujinko is perfectly located opposite Flinders Street train station for convenient. Opening for almost 24/7, this restaurant is great for any late night craving. Food is decent and worth checking out if in the area. Takoyaki (8 pcs) $9.70. Japanese style octopus ball served with Mayo, takoyaki sauce and bonito flakes
We were invited to try the dishes at Shujinko Flinders conveniently located opposite flinders street station. We ordered the Black ramen, tsukemen, zura ramen, croquet and takoyaki!
Their food was fresh, quick and affordable. The highlight was definitely the black ramen as the broth was mellow but tasty, the noodles and egg were cooked to perfection and the sizing was huge! The croquet and takoyaki were also favourites of ours! If you’re a ramen lover, we would recommend you to go try it out!
Thanks for the invite.
24/7 open Shujinko has just opened another Japanese noodle house, this time along Flinders Street in the CBD.
The quality of the ramen offered by Shujinko is some of the most authentic Melbourne has to offer with the noodles and broth made in-house daily. The menu features reasonably priced and amply sized bowls of delicious soup noodles, making this ramen-centric establishment a suitable haunt for economical food seekers at literally any hour of the day or night.
Not bad, and a nice addition to Flinders Street area. I hate the narrow but deep style bowl for the rice dishes. it's so hard to eat! but that's where the negative stops. I came here twice already now. Both the ramen and karaage don were good. Plenty of chicken too for the rice dish.
😱Lizzie’s first impression: a new restaurant just opened up on flinders st and it’s just as good as the russell store one.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I love the signature ramen - the spicy one. It’s everything I need on a warm day - the broth is cooked perfectly and the meat is really fresh, flavoursome and tender.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: the wait can be long but still beats the one on Russell during the early mornings of the weekend.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place known for its ramen. You can’t go wrong.
Step into Japan any hour of the day at this 24/7 gem. Get lost into a big bowl of ramen or try my favourite here, tasty takoyaki!
SERVICE: 4.5/5
Warm and friendly from the minute we entered, we felt welcome and taken care of by a lovely waitress throughout our time there. Food arrived in a flash and off she went zooming around the floor serving everyone with a smile. It was a great experience, keep it up Shujinko!
FOOD: 4/5
Vegetable Ramen + marinated egg ($13.80 + $2)
Shujinko's ramen bowls are impressively big. Great value for a 24hr establishment where you can usually expect to pay more. The vegetables were beautifully laid on top of the soup, ramen noodles hidden underneath and sprinkled with sesame. It was flavoursome and everything in the bowl worked well together. My only critique was the depth of flavour didn't come through initially however nothing that couldn't be resolved with some of the chilli seasoning & sesame oil provided on the table.
Takoyaki ($10.50)
Yesssss! I was looking forward to this as it was memorable from when I last had it at the Elizabeth St store. The flavour was still spot on and a good chunk of octopus in the centre was great! Took me right back to Osaka at Namba Walk again. Next time we will have to order two servings!
Ebi Fry ($14.90):
Excellent! Superb crispy crumb coating, fresh and tasty inside. I would prefer mayo sauce with it, rather than the tomato sauce. These get gobbled up quickly so you have to be quick to grab one when they hit the table.
Shujinko Chips ($10.50)
Now these were interesting! We didn't know what to expect from the vague description on the menu. We were later explained they were fried dumpling wrappers, super crunchy and sprinkled with their special chilli salt. I can imagine these would be the perfect grazing snack over drinks. Apparently they only serve this after 9pm at their other outlets, just in time for the pre-feed/drink session before a night out.
DECOR & AMBIENCE: 4/5
Having been to the Elizabeth St outlet and remembering how intimate the space was, I was nicely surprised by the open space here at Flinders St. Tables adorn one side of the store and the usual sit-up noodle bar overlooking the kitchen still exists. Gorgeous trinkets, sake pottery, sake bottles and paper artwork decorate the walls to transport you to one of the cafes you'd find off a little Tokyo alleyway.
KID FRIENDLY: Yes. May be a bit tight if you have a wide pram with you but otherwise a cute fun place for kids to enjoy as well.
3.5 We are no strangers to this rapidly expanding 24-hour ramen chain.
This visit confirms our initial impressions that while this fast paced Japanese style eatery may not be strictly authentic, Shujinko is bound to satisfy any ramen craving, at any time of day.
Great food but quality not consistent. The first time we had lunch here couple weeks ago, the karaage was crispy outside and juicy inside it was perfect. Broth of the ramen was rich flavoursome. However yesterday the same food but different results, chicken overcooked... Bit dry... But overall still nice. Especially with the jelly sparkling sake!

Ramen soup is pretty nice. Not that perfect because the temperature is not too hot and not too cold which is not my preferences. I order another Shujinko Don which is pretty nice as wel. More overc the Gyoza is awesome.
Extra note; i think they lack of staff, because its very hard to get their attention to order.
Damn what a location this place is packed to the brim! You know its a good sign when there is not a seat in sight. I fell in love with Japanese food when in Japan and found it hard ever since to find a good Ramen! The broth here was so full of flavour one of the best Ramens I've tried. High quality sides and so reasonably priced this place is a winner
Had a great lunch experience here. Service was fast and friendly and the menu is everything you’d want in 24 hour Ramen place! I’ll be back for the don for lunch and ramen on the cooler days
The restaurant looks so great and cute, also the service is nice and kindly. I came for lunch to take away, it just downstairs of my apartment. I ordered Karaage Don, so Yum and good tasty.. Thank you!
Shujinko takes prime position with another 24-hour ramen-ya right opposite Flinders St station.
This new branch keeps the interior design consistent with anime figurines in glass displays and bottles of sake along the wall, but somehow feels more spacious and comfortable than the Russell St and Elizabeth St stores.
As consistency is key, the menu is also pretty much the same, so I went for a few of my favourites:
* Kirin – extremely refreshing and poured straight from the tap. I could down half the glass and slam it on the table with a relieving expression of *kkhhhhhhhhhh* You can’t have ramen without beer!
* Aji Fry – the filleted mackerel is satisfyingly thick, juicy and flaky with a light golden crumb. Hot out the fryer, it was crisp and went very well with the tangy tonkatsu sauce and balanced out with a dab of mayo. I seriously could just have this with a bowl of plain rice and miso soup and that would be an awesome meal itself.
*Gyoza – classic hanetsuki gyoza which are pan-fried with a bit of flour slurry to give it crisp wings at the end. The pork inside is juicy with a hint of ginger. Winner with Kirin!
* Tsukemen – one of my favourite ramen, the noodles are served separately and is dipped into the broth, a little like zaru soba.
The broth is slightly more viscous and intense compared to a regular ramen, with small chunks of pork belly and sweet, charred onion, which gives it an umami boost.
The tsukemen noodles are specifically made thicker to pair with the broth, as it clings onto the noodles better when dipped. It also has a nice, chewy bite which is difficult to get right in alkaline noodles.
I like the shredded green onion, which provides a nice bitey freshness.
If you’ve finished the noodles and still have broth leftover, ask for hot water to be added, and you have a yourself a soup! Mind that cholesterol and sodium intake though! lol
* Black ramen – the signature tonkotsu broth has an umami kicker from the charred shellfish seasoning. You really get smokey flavours coming through, along with a hum of spiciness in the background. The hakata syle thin straight noodles go really well with the broth, so you can easily slurp it up together.
They have shichimi and chilli oil on the side, but what would be even more awesome is if they also had a sesame mill, a pot of minced garlic, and rice vinegar to pimp up your ramen even more! Oh my God that would be amazing.
I dined as a guest of Shujinko Flinders, but I am a ramen nerd and have been to the other stores as a regular customer. I would definitely come back though, I really enjoyed it, despite spilling half the tsukemen all over myself. I smelled delicious the rest of the night though.
