Looking for some good Japanese my partner and I went back to Shujinko again on Flinders St.
The service is still extremely friendly and welcoming. We started w some really yummy chicken karaage was which disappeared before my very eyes hahahaha.
My ramen dish was called Kazan Volcanic Ramen. Whoa, my first mouthful took my breath away hahaha woo hoo!
This dish had sliced pork, half an egg, bok choy, and a range of other delicious ingredients.
The broth was rich and warm and full of flavour. And at $15.50 it was great value, given that I was soo full, but very happy afterwards.
My partners ramen was demolished so this restaurant remains a personal favourite for both of us!
Oh and I almost forgot, my stem dry Hakutsuru Tanrei Junmai sake was sooo good. It’s light, served cold and so refreshing, at all times hahaha.
If you haven't been then your missing out!
Original review October 2018
I was very fortunate to be invited here tonight. This restaurant opposite Flinders St station is amazing!! Finally a place that is open all night long, yep, 24/7. Thank you!! I love the fact that you can get something to eat that is fresh, and cooked to order. Gosh I’ve missed this authentic Japanese food sooo much. This is my kind of food! I tried a peach sake drink w jelly. OMGosh yumm. It had a mild sweet peachy flavour w jelly. Wow! Yes, yes yes hahahaha l.
My partner and I started w some Takoyaki which was delicious, just perfect. We had some tofu salad which was great. My ramen had an amazing broth, pork belly, and some tasty noodles. It was perfect. Gosh. And the bowl was about 2 litres deep, so big you could almost swim in it hahahaha.
My partner had a rice dish and if we weren’t in public I’m sure the bowl would have been licked clean lol
Enough said, this place is a must visit!! Anytime of the day, or night!!! Yay ... I am definitely going back, and if you want to know what Japan is like, this is it. Enjoy.
Shujinko serves up pretty decent ramen. I've been here a few times now and tried both the tsukeman and signature ramen. Both were flavoursome and a good portion size. The broth for the dipping ramen was the right consistency to stick to the thicker noodles

A great spot for late night ramen in the city
The interior feels like they've tried to bring a slice of Japan to Melbourne. There are a lot of seats in the restaurant
FOOD
Gyoza: I love when there is a small sheet of fried skin that connects all of the gyoza, it feels a lot more authentic. The gyoza themselves had a tasty filling, and the skin was nice and soft.
Classic ramen: A thick broth that was full of umami flavour. The ramen was cooked nicely. I liked the slightly charred flavour of the pork that was on top. The ramen egg was very nicely cooked, and had a great flavour to it.
The service was polite
Food: 4.5/5
This is my favourite Ramen place in Melbourne so far. Massive portion sizes, great taste and decent pork slices.
Ambience: 3/5
The look is very nice however if you go by yourself at a busy time you get squished very close to other people doing the same thing which makes it a little hard to eat
Service: 3.5/5
The service is quick and they don’t take long to deliver your food, occasionally they forget your drink.
I have been here a number of times with my friend on our lunch break. We've always had a good experience however, the service here could be better.
Nonetheless, I've tried the vegetarian croquette, the Shujinko Ramen, the Miso Ramen, the Tsukemen and also their Yaki Ramen (which is dry, just like fried noodles). The food has always been good and the prices are pretty decent for what you get.
Their Matcha Ice cream is also super delicious. It's the perfect dessert to be honest - worth it.
Open til really late and always hits the spot when I am in the city on the weekends! I always crave these noodles when I have been out drinking !
Shujinko has another franchise outlet and they have been very smart in selecting such a great location close to Flinders Street Station.
🔆LOCATION🔆
Conveniently located on Flinders Street near the corner of Elizabeth Street. This precinct was in much needed uplift and having a Japanese Ramen restaurant here is great addition especially as its so close to the train station and so easy to locate and get to.
🔆SERVICE🔆
Very friendly staff. As I walked in, I was greeted very warmly and seated promptly.
There was bottles of water on the table already, however no glass. It took a while for the waitress to bring a glass, and when she did it was filled with water which was very nice service.
🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
I thoroughly looked through their menu and I couldnt see any lunch special. I asked the waitress if there was a lunch special menu and she said no there isnt any. That is disappointing as for 1 person its difficult to order more food as its such a waste however with lunch special at least there is small portion of entree to include with ramen which would have been nice. Perhaps this can be considered in future.
I decided to order the: Shujinko Ramen, $13.80
(Signature original ramen in tonkotsu soup base (pork broth). Serve with bok choy, spring onion, bean sprout, marinated egg, and signature grilled pork belly.
🔆VERDICT🔆
The ramen noodle was cooked to perfection, it was not overcooked, the ramen noodle was chewy in texture but just well cooked through to enjoy with the soup broth.
The grilled pork belly was of a decent portion as there were 2 thick pieces which is great. So much better than other ramen places where the pork is super thin. One of the pork belly was really overcooked and hard to eat. However, the second pork belly was very soft and tender with good flavour. There is inconsistently in the cooking of the pork belly which is disappointingly as I love eating pork.
The pork broth had really good flavour, the addition of the bok choy seem unnecessary and odd as its not traditionally included in ramen and to include black fungus instead.
Overall enjoyable meal and will be back to try others.
Ramens of Shujinko are always good.
I tried new menu, Tonkstasu.Tonkatsu menu was really good! One of the best lunch I've ever eaten in Melbourne.
Great tasting broth and ramen noodles here. I got the shujinko ramen. The tonkatsu soup broth is very flavoursome and the ramen noodles were chewy and smooth.
The soft serve ice cream..matcha and black sesame were really strong in flavours too. Good value!
Went looking for a nice ramen place on a cold night. Found this place my accident and it turned out to be pretty good. I recommend the Karakuchi Ramen, the noodles were chewy and soup tasted pretty good, it wasn’t too salty, spicy or garlicky either. I would have liked my soup a bit more hotter but that’s just me (I like soups at burning point). The gyoza were nice too, could of been a little more crispy on the side but the flavour was there. The peach jelly sparkling Saké is so delicious, definitely try it if you like fruity alcoholic drinks.
