Review Keith's Pies - Melbourne

Benny Maison
The best pies in Melbourne! Chunky beef, beef and potato are favourites. The apple slice and caramel slice very nice very rich.

Awesome pies from a great local business. I used to frequent this shop some time ago and recently rediscovered it and I’m glad I did. Highly recommend

Great coffee! super friendly homely customer service! Felt like my aunt and uncle where having a chat with me, gave us free donuts with the coffee.

If you’re craving a great pie with friendly staff...you’re best to give this place a shot. I had a steak and onion pie which was amazing (a lot of filling), chunky steak and mushroom (great depth of flavour) and a coffee (with free donut!). Really good pastry and very reasonable price. Definitely recommend!!

Great secret and grab a top pie. Really good pies and a must go. Really nice and made on premise.

Amazing quality pies and sausage rolls. The lovely owners even gave us free doughnuts and two coffee holders. I am so impressed by both the homely customer service and the flavours of the pies. Would highly recommend!

Heard about this place from the try guys. And they were right. Hands down the best pie I've ever eaten. I don't think there will ever be a place that'll do it better. 10/10
I called into this bakery and I brought a cauliflower and cheese roll.

The service hasn't changed.

But my cauliflower and cheese roll was tasty and the pastry light, flaky and altogether this is what keeps me going back. The quality is really good.

And Keiths pies still takes cash at the moment which is a bonus.

This bakery is still worth a visit.

Previous review- January 2020
I haven’t been to Keith’s Poes this year so I decided to call in for a cheese and spinach roll. The service was ok.

My cheese and spinach roll had some good flaky pastry and the filling was ok if a little dry but it was still nice overall.

The sausage roll was nice, as was the brekkie pie (my fav). Chicken green curry was quite spicy although didn’t quite have the curry flavour. Cornish pastry was ok, a little moist and potato-y for my tastebuds, but a decent size. Friendly service.

Not bad but too salty. Had the rosemary and lamb pie and spinach and cheese roll.

Loved it! Pies are very reasonably priced and definitely worth the visit. I had the steak pepper pie and the thai green curry pie. Steak pepper pie was full of warm gooey lovelyness and plenty of steak and was absolutely delicious. Meanwhile the thai green curry was real hot and alot more interesting than your average pie. No complaints here, just great quality pies

I’ve been a massive fan of meat pies my whole life and I’d say it surprisingly hard to get a really good meat pie in Melbourne. Generally, on my excursions to smaller country towns I’d find far better quality than what is in the city. That is, until I found Keith’s Pies.

Keith’s Pies has all the classic meat pie flavours you could need (including my favourite curry) and they all taste sensational. Pricing is very reasonable and comparable to bakeries outside of Melbourne and the service is fantastic. As an example, I once had a mishap with an Uber delivery (in short, it never arrived) and after the the owner called to unnecessarily apologise, on my next order the kind owner gave me a few free jam donuts.

My only complaint is a wish they’d open on Sunday as everyone knows a pie can cure a hangover!

Very solid pies! Have been here a few times and there always good. Recently had the steak cheese bacon which was 👍🏻
I think it closes on Saturday at 1pm which is weird.

Only place I can find a Cornish pasty and they are great well done to Keith’s pies. Never stop making them. I might have to place an order to stockpile lol.
Hello. Imnikki
Keith's Pies should be renames Keith's Pasty. While the pies that I tried were rather delicious, the Cornish Pasty was the best of the lot. Crumbly golden brown pastry, and generously filled with minced, potatoes, carrots and onions.

The Chunky Steak and Mushroom pie, and Steak Curry Pie also had the same beautiful flaky pastry and abundance of ingredients, but was just somewhat lacking that oomph in flavour.

The Apple Pie was also quite the stunner. I could see the beautiful browned crust glistening with sugar and hear the crunch when I bite into it. The taste of spiced apple chunks rounded up this beauty.

Last but not least, the traditional sausage roll. Another example of beautiful crackly pastry, but as with the pies, a bit more seasoning would do it good.

Delicious, filling and great value for money.

I Can’t believe I’m reviewing a pie shop but I tell you what - the pies here are streets ahead of the pie in the sky place in Olinda - and a tenth of the price!

Saw they delivered by Ubereats and got a beef and mushroom, chicken, sausage roll and cheese kransky and 4 were perfect quality - good meat, no gristle and full of flavour.

$25. Unbelievable for the price.

Usually get the pies ordered from UberEATS! Always arrive super hot and fresh! Really really decent pies! Chunky pepper steak pie is A grade! Sausage rolls are decent too!

Keith's pies is a bit of an institution dating back to the late 60's I was told. It's a little shop with a few seats out front and some strip parking, service is fast and friendly.
Three of us had the pastie which they claim they are famous for, steak and onion and sausage rolls.
All very tasty. If pies are your thing you need to try this one if your in the area.

Fantastic pies! The chicken Thai green curry is a must! Lovely service and great coffee. A favourite of mine. And the yummy cinnamon donut with your coffee is an added bonus too!
Byron's Vanilla Slice Blog
Whilst walking through the maze of Ikea in Richmond my vanilla slice radar picked up on the nearby Keith's Bakery. With a reputation dating back to the 60's and somebody touting them as having the best vanilla slice in Richmond on TripAdvisor, I felt it necessary to see for myself. Their slice was pretty good; with finely baked, golden, flaky pastry sheets sandwiching some pretty ordinary custard that had a ever-so-slightly set texture. Their pastry and millimeter thin icing were the heroes of the slice, with a commendable price also notable. Extra credit should go to their sustainable biodegradable packaging for their takeaway cups, but sadly this isn't one of my scoring criteria!

Have been wanting to go here forever but being closed on a Sunday which in my world is peak pie eating day makes it hard. The range and availability of pies is exceptional, I had the steak bacon and cheese. Definitely not world beating ingredients going into it but the flavour, temperature and perfect firmness of the pastry making it very easy to eat was excellent. Would return but not in a massive hurry.

OH MY GOODNESS? YOU CALL THIS CORNISH PASTY???. I was recently in Melbourne and went all the way to buy Keith's Pies. I paid Aus$19.20 for 4 pasty slices. The 4 pieces was placed horizontally on a paper tray and i had to "balance" it on the tram ride all the way back to collins street. When i got to my hotel and took my first bite, I almost spat it out! 50% of the filling was filled with carrots and onions and there was a lot of crunchy bits (which i cannot identify). I threw 3 of the remaining slices away. Yucks!!!

Good quality pies at a great price. Been a regular, love them, their choice of pies is strange and cool. I love their chicken korma and sheperd's pie. Small lil shop with brilliant stuff in store.

Good pies and they have the best vanilla slice in Richmond

Mr karmi. Best pastie I have ever had... The people that work here are genuine and everything is homemade. I can't recommend this place enough (try the cauliflower rolls-who would have thought!)

Best pasties in the world. I discovered this pie shop about 30 years ago, and still believe Keith's Pasties are the most mouth watering in the world. Having eaten my way through Asia, Europe, the US and Australia, I've never found any pie or pastie even remotely as delicious.
Other reviewers commented on the combination of ingredients. The pastry is melt in the mouth, and the combination of meat and vegetables is the very essence of a good pastie.
You have to eat one of these before you die.
Maria, a pastie connoisseur

I have grown up hearing about people rave about these pasties, so I have been there 3 times in the last 2 years ( just to make sure my thoughts are right). I can see how they could be good, they have potential but fall short in a few key areas which make a good pastie, far too much potatoe and the potatoe is under cooked, it's actually crunchy! Now when the old owners had it I have no doubt they were a great pastie, but are certainly well short of that now. Do your self a favour and go to Lee Lee bakery in boronia. Best pasties and pies around ( and cheap)

Yoopers would whinge. I first got exposed to the mythos of the pastie in the early 1980s when I lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Plucky Cornish miners warming their pie-crusty lunches on shovels held over fires burning deep inside the copper mines, yada-yada... (How were they not asphyxiated by oxygen-consuming combustion underground? Like most ethnic myths, it was probably bollocks.) Ever since then, when I see "pasties" on a signboard, I'm compelled to give them a burl. That's why I popped into Keith's for a lunch snack.

Sorry, Keith's -- Yoopers (as Upper Peninsula residents call themselves) would toss your pasties down the pit. The crust was average -- at least it wasn't tough -- but the filling was mostly potatoes. The scanty mince inside tasted kind of like sausage spices, and there was a tinge of boiled onion flavour throughout. It reminded me of grocery store pasties I had in the Lake Superior. region. At $4.60, the price was about average. Keith's pies looked OK, but I'd give a pass to the pasties.
