This place has a variety of soup, rice and noodle options, with your choice of pork, duck, chicken or vegetarian. Dropped by here for some takeaway crispy pork and rice. A little pricey at $14.50 for takeaway. The pork was nice and crispy although a little fatty, and there was a bit too much rice. It was a great meal. I will try the duck next time.
Half decent roast duck in the Target Centre! Walked past here so many times and never even thought to stop because of its location. But it was decent. They gave me the drumstick as requested and it hit the spot. Minimum $15 on card transactions so just throw a dumpling on the side.
Will come back for:
+ BBQ pork noodle with laksa soup
What a gem of a place. Was looking for a quick snack during lunch whilst we were shopping in town and came by this spot in the Target centre. The amount of bbq pork was generous. These were crunchy on the outside and gelatinous and super tender on the inside. A perfect accompaniment with the noodle and laksa soup was tasty also. A delightful surprise. Prices were fair for what you get. Will definitely be back again for more!
Ordered the soy sauce chicken with dry noodles. Service was extremely polite and friendly, and the chicken portion was generous. Chicken was well cooked and tender, and not too oily. The noodles were great as well. I like how they add vegetables on the side - it adds balance to the meal.
Very good laksa, good flavours, nice portion, fast service, reasonable price. Perfect winter food or maybe every time you crave for a bit of spice. Recommend.
3.5. I liked their roast pork and bbq pork dry noodles dish. Their meat is roasted there and chopped up on the spot. They flavours are really nice and their meat has lean and fatty balance. The shop has been here since I was a little kid!
J’s score 4.0 stars. J had lunch here on Thu 14th March – it was packed to the rafters. Order at the counter, get your own utensils, then take your food to a seat of your choice. Service was good, staff were friendly & courteous 👍 – despite being very busy her meal was ready in 5 min 👍. J struggled carrying her enormous bowl of noodle soup, so a staff member helped her get it to her table (amazeballs)!!!!! 👍👍👍
Vegetarian dumpling soup noodle ($12.50) > Plentiful thin hand made noodles had a silky texture. Lots of soft eggplant chunks, nice okra, fried shallots & plentiful Asian greens. Soft & moist tofu squares were abundant & the vego broth was very rich. There were 3 large vego dumplings which had green wrappers & a mushroom, carrot & water chestnut filling. The mushroom was unusual, but tasty & made up the bulk of the filling. Very good (& great value). A return visit is required – with me involved 😋!
I’ve been going here over the years for their Yong Tau Fu. I always select the curry soup as it has a ‘laksa flavour’. Overall this dish is always incredible but it fluctuates in flavour whenever I’ve gone.
Despite this, the taste is usually really good. There are multiple pieces of food you can add to the dish which is always is delicious and cooked well.
The price has raised a lot over the years to. So this soup noodle dish is about $14.
Overall Rate : 4/5
This place has existed for a fair few years now, my favourite go to dish would have to be the Yong tau Fu range noodles and I'd always pick the ones I want rather than order the pre made one c: the curry was delicious, it wasn't spicy but was full of flavour!
Ordered half a duck from this outlet and we got quite a decent portion. The pieces were meaty and succulent, skin was crispy without too much fat. Price was reasonable as well. Would order BBQ meats from here again.
Very popular outlet in the Bourke Street Target Centre which may appear foodcourty on the surface, but are the real deal, at least when it comes to their Yong tau fu. Wide delicious range to choose from, and the curry soup base is one of the best I’ve had. Price is certainly reasonable as far as Yong tau fu goes.
Another great little place to dine in the heart of the Bourke St precinct. Always a delight to come here and dine. Love having a glass of hot tea to accompany my meal.
Overall a great place for a cheap, value for money meal if you're missing Asian flavours. Whenever my mum (from Malaysia) is in Melbourne she alway insists on coming here for a meal or two before she leaves. She loves the flavour-packed juicy roast pork and has had various dishes such as the pork on rice as well as the noodles with BBQ pork. Her all time favourite (and best in Melbourne in her opinion is their BBQ Pork Combo +Rice which comes with Siu You and Char Siu. This place can get very busy during lunch hour so best to come off peak.
All around great place for a cheap and fulfilling feed with friendly staff, their roast duck is awesome and flavours always on point. Can get very crowded at lunchtime!
I know this place since many years ago, and they still stand strong whilst other food outlet come and go in the area.
The roast duck, BBQ pork, crispy skin pork and chicken looked so inviting from the front, but this time I chose braised beef and wanton egg noodle for my lunch.
The wanton was nice, but the braised beef was a bit tough. I tried a piece of crispy skin pork from my friend's order and it tasted good, crispy and well seasoned.
Reasonably priced, and service was very quick during lunch time.
Various noodles, soup base and fried stuffed snacks provided. The roasted duck are so yum that when you bite it, oil and juice cane out and fulfil your mouth. It tastes amazing. The tom yum soup is without MSG (I’m MSG allergy so it’s pretty easy to tell if it has even tiny bit of it), sweet & sour while slightly hot. I love all the fried stuffed food, crispy and they stuffed with smashed fish which it’s stuffed with smashed pawn in most restaurant.
My husband and I were the regular customer for more than 10years, we moved to northern suburb and seldom visit it right now. We came back a few days ago and all the food are just fantastic still. Seeing many restaurants closed down and newly opened for years but this one still survived. Wish this restaurant could keep this high standard as always x
I love the Yong Tau Foo which is a selection of tofu, stuffed vegetables and dumplings. You choose the noodles and the soup base with those selection. It is a warm hearty meal during the colder months. I have been coming to this place for years. I know some of you think that the price is reasonable but I have been living in the past when the noodles were served at $9.50 and the current price of $13 seems a touch expensive, But when the cravings for a good bowl of noodle soup gets too much, this place would always hit the right spot.
Located china town area nearby the target store , Chinese cuisine, customer services not bad , and the selection food many choice , roaster meat . And noddle. If you look for a simple lunch , then come over have a seat . Price is reasonable.
I feel like I have gone to this place all my life and I just turned 30. I moved to qld for five years and every time I came home to Melbourne, this place was a must visit. I always get a chicken noodle soup- generally with char sui and crispy pork but sometimes with dumplings. I dragged my partner there who is also now a huge fan and she always gets crispy pork on dry noodles. I bloody love this place despite the lack of service and tight squeeze.
Always love this place for its yong tau fu (vegetables stuffed with fish paste). Have never tried their a la carte so can only review on Yong Tau Fu. They have a great selections of yong tau fu and some dumplings for the noodles at the display. First you will need to tell the lady types of noodles you like to have and soup based (listed on the board). Then you get to choose your Yong tau fu or dumplings at the display. You can pick 6. Everything is just so delicious. The price doesn’t hurt your wallet and the portion is huge. You might need to wait a bit during peak hours.
Always good whenever you crave for chinese noodle soup. They provide good variety of yong tau fu choices with three choices of soup (chicken, tom yum, and curry laksa) with three noodle choices (vermicelli, shanghai noodle, and laksa noodle). Beside yong tau fu, you canalso choose ala carte menu with variety of roast pork, roast duck, chicken with rice, etx. The taste was great (although you can feel the msg a bit) but hey its chinese food!😬 oh and the portion is big as well. You may expect a 5-7 minutes waiting during lunch time but its worth the wait
Legendary small shop selling BBQ Pork and other Chinese roast meat on top of either noodle soup or dry noodle, even rice. Always love visiting this place since 8 years ago. My favorite is to choose a 6 items of various dumplings to be boiled in Chicken stock along with tiny egg noodles. The condiments like Chili oil and Hoisin sauce only accentuates the already flavorsome soup. Big portion too!
It was really nice noodle soup with bbq pork, I usually like to have it all the time, soup was nice test. I wanna try another different noodle either.
Not a bad place to get noodles. They have a selection of yong tau fu where you basically choose different things to go with your noodles and broth. I got the chicken broth with the spinach noodles and it was waaay too salty! It did get a little better the more I had it. I tried some of my friend's pork noodles and the broth was better. The noodles were also definitely better than my floury spinach noodles. Would probably get that if I come back.
Once a friend introduced this spot to me I was a bit hesitant, Chinese food in food courts are usually recipes for disaster. I saw that the yong tau foo was on the menu, much like The Grand Tofu in Glen Waverley, if not exactly the same. I asked one of the staff there, they seemed oblivious as to what I was insinuating.
Anyway, everything was exactly as I remembered it. I always get it in the laksa soup base with a mixture of hokkien and vermicelli noodles. Most of your other choices (6) are fried so it isn't exactly a healthy meal. I love the stuffed eggplant, dumpling varieties as well as the prawn-like vegetable. It's a solid fulfilling meal to meet your laksa cravings.
This used to be my regular cheap eat spot when I was working in the CBD and even with the price increase over the years, you will still get a satisfying meal under $13! The Grand BBQ is located at the Target food court and its self service. You order at the counter and you will be given a number. Once your food they will yell out the number and you collect your food from the counter. I always go for the Yong to fu- you choose 6 pieces of vegetables stuffed with fish paste, your choice of noodles and broth. I like their Chilli sambal and complimentary tea. The staff are not very friendly or flexible ( won't allow you to alter the menu for the roast BBQ meat) though but it didn't deter me from keep coming back.
The tofu never fails to tempt me to this place and I love the selection of tofu offered. However the last time we visited I was disappointed by the curry soup as it didn't seem as tasty as it was previously. Perhaps would've been better with added chilli. Nevertheless a great place to visit.
Pretty decent yong tau foo. The name of the place emphasise more on bbq dishes but really it is their yong tau foo that stands out more. Personally i prefer their clear soup and their wontons. I wonder why there's no more place that sell this southern Chinese dish in the city. They need competition.
The Girl With Blue Hair
+4
This is not a fancy restaurant but it definitely reminded me of hawker's food in Malaysia. The Yong Tofu (veggies and tofu stuffed with fish) in laksa soup is very authentic! They made it just like how it is traditionally. You get to choose your own noodles (rice noodles, flat noodles, hokkien noodles or spinach hokkien noodles) with your own selection of 6 Yong Tofu cooked in chicken broth or laksa soup. You also help yourself to Chinese tea, cutlery and fried chilli paste. The fried chilli sauce is homemade and goes very well with the Yong Tofu!
Quick lunch w the work crew at Grand BBQ certainly didn't disappoint. I had the BBQ pork with noodles & curry soup, while my colleagues had the Yong Tou Fu with various 'choose your own' laksa items. They were delicious. Meals came out quickly & the complimentary green tea was a nice surprise. Will be back for sure!
I enjoy the food here. The yong tau foo is what I go for each time. I've only traditionally have the curry soup with the noodles. It's no 5 star place but reminds me of home esp the non existence service where they just scream out the numbers. It's cheap and filling fur me but do realise it's not everyone's cup of tea.
Our favourite Yong Tou Fu in Melbourne, including everyone that we bring to this place! We often come around 6pm when the place is still quiet. Don't expect a super friendly customer service and super clean restaurant :D But they do serve good food. We've been coming for more than 10 years and hardly get bad service so we'll be coming back for more!
Been here like 100 times. Love their coconut milk curry noodles, the best ever! We come here very often when we run out of idea where to eat. Never disappoint us.
The yong dao fu in chicken broth here is delish! You get to choose 6 pieces with your choice of noodles and broth for $12.50. There is free tea and the chilli oil is pretty good. Service is fast and no nonsense. You get a number and get called when your food is ready. Good option for a cold weather.
Their curry yong dao fu is pretty awesome as well! Good flavour and not too watered down.
Came back here again in less than a week and tried their wonton noodle soup. Delicious wontons with big chunky cut prawn fillings. Nom Nom Nom.
We really enjoyed the authentic BBQ Duck Roast on Rice served with pokchoi. This Dish was really tasty and this Cute restaurant is located in the CBD of Melbourne at Target Centre near China Town,Bourke Street.Nice Food and Reasonable Price
I love their noodle soups here. I always order extra fried wontons and fish balls to make my soup more hearty. Afterwards I always get some charsiu pork take-away. Delish. Drawback - crowded and not much seating space. Also state your orders clearly, quote the number because a couple of times I was timid to say I got the wrong order. (I like the 'fried' wonton soup better than the normal wonton) Fresh and delicious.
Had their Curry Yong Tong Fu. Their soup is pretty good. It's a little too salty for me. But the soup was was still quite flavorsome and not too spicy. Their homemade fishballs are a bit overcooked. But overall was still quite good~!😆
Stopped in for lunch, good size line & ducks hanging in the window is what drew me in, love some duck. So I ordered roasted duck with dry noodles. Was pretty good, would've like crispier skin, but for the price the lunch was filling & tasty.
Cash only if you decide to dine here. Limited seating, so you can get it to go. If I go again, I'll get the duck and pork. That's my recommendation.
Very happy to have found this Yong Tau Foo place in the CBD.. Often walked pass this place when I went to Target on Bourke St, but never knew they have Yong tau fu. Loved the option to choose your own noodle, soup and 6 pieces of YTofu (fried pork and seafood roll is so yummy). And they offer self serve tea and condiments/chillies. Popular choice is laksa w roast meat and they are cheap $12.50 and delicious. Their broth uses various bones as shown in pic and boil for hours.. Will be back for more and perfect for winter. Singaporean/Malaysian Chinese esp those from KL will love this place!
(English review below)
I have travelled. But I haven't seen anywhere does laksa in this way. A colourful variety of stuffed vegetables - traditionally haka-made - with 4 types of noodle you can choose to mix. Although the noodle isn't nice (and it has gotten worse IMO) but it tastes nicer with beansprout.
I hope it stays as good as before(3 years ago, last i tried). But it's now super "coconut-loaded" which is not very Laksa to me. I would still recommend to mates, tho.
laska很过瘾,又不会过浓,面稍微有点粘软,适合中午不知道吃什么的时候来一碗。
What I eat when I don't know what else to eat.
Great little takeaway if you love bbq pork. Dirt cheap yet good quality Chinese bbq and perfect for a quick lunch in the city. Never tried the noodles which is their other speciality. It's usually bbq pork on rice for me!
Located in what I call the Target arcade off Bourke Street, this is one of my haunts for 'Yong To Fu' style noodle soup where you get to specify the noodle type, soup base and extras ranging from bean curd skin, fish paste mushrooms to dumplings. I always seem to get the mix of vermicelli and hokkien noodles with the laksa base here.
Always very busy during lunch hours, so get here early to grab a table. Afterwards I do feel a little mouth dry, so you have been warned.
Of course there are also plenty of rice and noodle dishes if the above doesn't interest you, but it's what I usually come here for.
Yong Tau Foo is a Hakka Chinese food that mainly consist of tofu that are sometimes filled with ground meat or fish paste. Growing up in Singapore and Chinese culture, it’s only natural that I crave for it from time to time. It’s not easy finding a place that serves delicious, affordable and convenient Yong Tau Foo in Melbourne so I’m really thankful for The Grand BBQ!
This place is fun and unique. There a few places that serve Yong Tau Foo, and this one has stood the test of time, being in existence for over a decade. It's Hakka Chinese style food, and you get to select your noodle type and broth style, plus 6 toppings from among 12. The toppings selection is made up of mostly filled tofu or bean curd topped with ground beef or fish. I choose hokkien egg noodles with a laksa curry, and highly recommend the fried bean curd with ground beef topping.
Love this place and have been going here for years! Very cramped, and you need to go with a friend so you can save a spot cos this place is always packed. Love the choose your own adventure noodle soups and the roast meats are always a good option. Yes the laksa soup is a little salty (which I don't actually mind) but much better than what a lot of other places offer. Service is efficient with the raffle ticket system (makes me feel like I'm gonna something - and let's face it we're all winners dining here) and I always have a soft spot for the woman screaching my order from across the kitchen. Bless.
Really good BBQ pork & dry noodles ! 😋 Laksa was bland but the concept of choosing items to go with your laksa is interesting (apparently this is Malaysian style)... Once you picked items you want them to cook, those cooked items will be served with the laksa. I highly recommend BBQ pork! We wanted roast pork too but they ran out ...
Great food, great price, been more than 60 times. Best chicken and Laksa soups. Average service, close to Target, corner of Bourke and Swanston.
Consistently good. I've been going here for yonks now, since at least '99. They've been around for years, seen all their decor changes too. I've found their food consistently good. Sure, there are variations in the soup, but overall it's good. After all these years, I know that whenever I come here, I can find the same hearty nosh and it will taste pretty much the same. =)
I've found the service to be consistent as well. I've never been served by a rude person at the cashier. Some may be a bit curt at times, but hey, for $10 I'm not expecting Ezard. The people cleaning up are always polite. Besides, have you seen how busy they get during lunchtime? It's get in get out. Go before or after the mad rush, which is what I do. Portion size is generous across the board, whether you order the soup dishes or the rice dishes.
I had a friend who was stuck behind someone really slow ordering one day and they gave free yong tau foo for his patience! I was the regular and that never happened to me!
They make their own Yong Tau Foo, which a lot of other places don't.
Totally recommend and they have vego options too. Particularly like the green vegetarian dumplings, really tasty with mushroom and vegie fillings. Hey, free tea as well. =)
To me it's a Melbourne stalwart that's always a good go-to option.
Better curry noodle soup than laksa king! Yum!!
Staying for food. One of the first places I tried when I first landed here, and I've been going back since.
Smack right in the city, location is good, decor had improved while still maintaning the self service
tea and culteries
Always go for the Yong Tau foo where you sorta make your own dish with your selection of meat/vegies
stuffed with fish meat, your noodles and soup base of your liking.
Always have the curry laksa!
There other dishes are not bad too, but noodles can be overcooked and soggy at times.
Not only you see asians here but western peeps too,
Close early about 7.30-8pm ish I think and cash only.
Price wise : Bang for the buck!
where else to get some yong tau foo :)
Yummm. Great yong tau foo. I haven't had anything else, but why would I bother. choice of yong tao food, plus noodles and soup, also well priced
Yummy Curry Laksa Soup. I love this place for their curry laksa soup, I always get the BBQ pork with the pork belly style. Lots of noodles and the soup is very tasty! As others mentioned you can expect to wait for a table during the lunchtime rush. Don't expect table services, it's walk up service only. I really enjoy coming here!
Great Tofu. Excellent tofu, fresh and smooth, the best you can find in Melbourne. Don't expect service, though; it is not set up as a restaurant, more like a hawker stall you will find in many Asian cities.
Typical Hawker Food. The place is quite packed during lunchtime so come early or expect a wait. It's also self-served but usually that means food comes faster. The waitress going around tidying tables can be rather rude and would often pick up things from the table even when you're not quite down eating.
The yong tau foo are freshly made and is one of the best in the city. Most shops would use frozen ones as substitute and often you can taste the difference especially in the fillings. I love their curry laksa base although consistency is not always maintained. Sometimes the soup is too runny and lack taste. My partner and friend love their tom yum base.
Their roast pork on dry noodle is also delicious although the portion is rather small. After a meal of roast pork on dry noodle, I would often still feel hungry and I am not a big eater. The yong tau foo on soup noodles on the other hand is rather filling. Try their eggplant, lady's finger, tofu, and mushroom yong tau foo and you might be pleasantly surprised.
Go for Yong Tofu. Pick 6 pieces of fish stuffed vegs/tofu. I always have the egg noodle and chicken base soup, which is quite delicious and relatively good value for $10.50 (Bigger pieces than other city yong tofu places). Chicken soup base is addictive and contains no MSG. You get free tea. The environment is food court style, so eat and get out!
Love the soups. Amazing soups, large variety of noodles and other ingredients. Fresh and made to order.
Great tasting simple soup. Really nice soup with lean and tasty pork.
Highly recommended
Love the wontons. I love this place for their soups. I haven't tried the various stuffed vegetables as yet, but will be sure to do so soon and report back. I can't go past the wonton soup - not an ordinary wonton soup - delicious stock and large wontons filled with pork, prawns, and wood-ear mushrooms for a nice bit of crunch. I've also tried the roast duck and pork (served on rice with a bit of bok choy) - both a little too fatty for my taste but well-cooked(the pork belly has a fantastic crunchy crackling).
*update* - I tried the soup with the stuffed vegetables. OK, but looks better than it tastes. My recommendation is to stick to the wontons as they are fantastic.
One of the things I like about Yong Tou Fou is the way all the elements are laid out and you get to choose. Mushrooms, Okra, Beancurd Skin Bitter gourd, Eggplant Yong Tou Fou Chicken stock, egg noodles, mushroom, okra, tofu block, tofu skin, eggplant, stu
This place has been around for years and has always represented great value. Don't expect table service. You order at the counter, find a table, they call your number out, you collect your meal and hope no one has taken your table. For the price it is damn good.
$19.50
Not sure this price is good for laksa.
But taste is really great.
You can choose 5 topping and noddle type.
The only place ive been to with reasonably priced duck! Only $16.50 and comes with rice. Their complementary chilli oil is great as well!!
Grand BBQ has been around for ages, in the Target Centre. It's quite a small place and used to be hampered by lack of seating space, but now they've put big tables along the walkway for anyone to use, GOOD MOVE!
The crispy pork is always good here, my wife tried the Yong Tau Foo and was very happy with it. Good food, cheap price. Lots of other options too. Good choice for a quick Asian meal in the heart of Melbourne city.
Amazing food!!! Super tasty. A lot of choices and you can choose your own personal soup also. Love it!!!!
