All Good! But price was more expensive! 所有都很好 只是最后上的辣子鸡 太难吃……炸太久了吧 苦苦的
We went to Colourful Yunnan for dinner after uni. Unfortunately a couple of the dishes we wanted were unavailable. The food that we did end up ordering were delicious though. The service is decent for a Chinese restaurant. Although the restaurant looks tiny downstairs, there is quite a large space upstairs and it is quite comfortable.
If you love spicy, real spicy chinese food, this is the place. It serves really authentic chinese food and I love it!! It has an extensive menu, and all of them looked so good, we didn't know what to choose from.
We had the eggplant fried rice, pork ribs with chilli and garlic, cold spicy chicken with sesame sauce and lamb in chilli oil. Everything was up to my expectations.
It can be quite busy at night, so it might be a little bit noisy as the tables are quite near to each other. It's kinda pricey but it's definitely worth it!! The portion is somehow big and 5 stars for the taste.
We attended Colourful Yannan on a Saturday night with a large group of people. The table I was on all enjoyed all their meals from the large menu including green beans with mushrooms, chilli and pork, chicken tendons (highly recommended), beef and chilli, lemongrass and chilli barramundi, preserved short ribs with nuts chilli and potato and the traditional chicken and noodle dish which you prepared at your table. The other tables were also impressed with the dishes they ordered.
Service was okay and attentive when wanted and everyone was friendly.
Only downfall is the bill is in Chinese and you had to pay down stairs instead of paying the waiter the bill. Which cause a traffic jam downstairs. Also some dishes were not available such as 3 dishes of noodles and another dish which was strange because we were there at 6:30 pm.
Overall great authentic meals and definitely worth a visit.
So unexpectedly cheap! Came here for dinner for 2, + drinks and totaled to less than $35 😱 crossing bridge noodles were delicious as expected, with a warm hearty chicken broth and lots of toppings. For $14 this huge bowl of rice noodles is an absolute STEAL. The stir fried noodles were tasty, and had a bit of a kick to it. Serving portions were MASSIVE
The best part was definitely this coconut drink that everyone was drinking. I don’t remember if it was on the menu but it was coconut milk with sago and pieces of toast on top? So delightful!
We found this excellent restaurant in Carlton which serves up Yunan dishes which are more geared towards being spicy... however if you can’t eat spicy food there are also a number of options available.. though not the best options there.. the restaurant itself was pretty big and had 2 levels.. the highlight was the pork trotters and the soup noodles (which are a delicacy in the region).. some of the other dishes that were spicy provided some insight into what other choices they had.. on the menu the level of spiciness was marked as little chilli logos..
The options of dishes were very varied and it would take a while before you would be able to make your way through the menu..
Overall a great experience and would definitely come back for more...
Gingko Leaf Girl always suggests the best restaurants – having introduced me to chilli crab haven Red Hot Wok and South Yarra fine dining spot Atlas with its perennially changing cuisine focus – so I was excited when she proposed that we visit Colourful Yunnan one cold Friday night.
Nice and busy place if you love spicy food. Authentic Yunnan style food with enough flavour. Recommend all hot dish and the coconut-bread drink. Noodles and fried rice come in huge portion.
Probably the best Chinese food in Melbourne. I would definitely go back there for more good food. Authentic yunnan food served in an utmost sophisticated way
Have only eaten here once before, and though the cuisine here doesn't appetise me that much, my friend who was originally from China says the food is pretty authentic. I had the 'Cross Bridge Rice Noodles' which was noodles in a very flavourful broth and different meats and vegetables on the side. The noodles and broth were great but I would have liked more meat (they only gave a couple of slices of each). Otherwise it was a pleasant experience and I wouldn't mind coming back for more.
A mate took me here - said he used to go quite often back in his uni days. The place was full of Chinese students which is always a good sign, and people were lining up for tables the whole time we were there. I haven’t had food from this region before, so let him order as he always does this well. The first dish was a cold shredded chicken dish that was swimming in chili oil. This was some of the tastiest chili oil I’ve ever had and went perfect with the steamed rice. The second dish were what I could only describe as a big crackers or chips that had what seemed to be similar to thin slices of salami (a Chinese equivalent surely) . Delish and so more-ish. The lamb ribs were deep fried and juicy and fatty. A great all around meal with dishes I wouldn’t normally eat - I can see why it’s always busy.

The restaurant recently went through renovation, new tables and chairs make the place look much cleaner. Food has always been great! Spicy crispy chicken, rice noodles, crispy pork trotters are my go-to items on the menu. It is so affordable as it's near Melbourne Uni. Will definitely come back.
It’s a very famous Chinese restaurant among Chinese students in Uni Melb, so I decided that I ought to give it a shot. And it quite deserved its reputation! Service was decent, and food was authentic and delicious. Was shocked by the huge portion of the rice noodles. You probably won’t finish it (I didn’t). Although I did wish the price for the other dishes could be a little more reasonable.

This is a famous Chinese restaurant near Melbourn University. We went there a while ago after class.
The food was really authentic and delicious.
It came out really fast too.
The staff was also nice
I tried this restaurant as my frd recommended. Even though most food here is spicy but that hot as Sichuan hot pots. It's more like a mixture of sweet chili and pepper, which i can tolerate lol. Noodles are great. Rice wine tastes special. I do especially like the chicken with tiny fried rice, very chewy:))))
However, always a queue and no cash available are not so convenient.
The second time visited this amazing Chinese yunnan restaurant. We tried rice noodles, spicy fish & tofu pot and seafood something last time. This time we tried their mushroom fried rice & soup, and spicy beef pot. We enjoyed so much especially they are MSG free. I'm kind of MSG allergic so it's easy to me to find out the food had MSG or not. The mushroom fried rice is a must order item !
Great place to have Chinese food if you don't mind the queue! You won't find good service and nice atmosphere in this restaurant... but just come for the food 😋
Really good food, but the prices for lunch are astronomical! If you're a millionaire, this is a great lunch choice. Otherwise I'd stick to this place as a dinner option. Lots of choices and really interesting flavours.
Very delicious food! Waiters are quite friendly and patient. I recommended to try cross bridge noodles. Soup was extremely tasty and fresh. Yum!
Came for dinner tonight. Always a queue. Luckily its not a long wait. Had the jellyfish wasabi (cold dish) its so yum.. really like the flavour.. soury sweet and spicy..
tried the spicy pork intestines . I was expecting more saucy kinda style however its dry style. Still good but i would say it will be better if its more saucy...
Dishes are not cheap however its big in portion.
We were here on a Saturday evening and struggled a bit to find the place. The English sign was tiny and barely visible from afar. A Chinese friend of us suggested this place and apparently it is quite popular among Chinese MelbUni students in the area.
The place was quite popular during weekends so it's a good idea to book in advance. We were lucky to grab the last available table after waiting for about 5 minutes.
As the menu is quite chili-intensive, unfortunately there were not many options for us two, who can only handle mild spices. However, we were still able to grab the popular crossing-bridge noodles, which was actually quite good (3.5/5 points). The portion is definitely huge, with at least of what feel like 3 serves of rice noodles in a big bowl. The dish was a quite interesting as well as all ingredients were served separately in different dishes and you need to combine them yourself.
The broth was naturally slightly sweet and comforting. It was light but came with enough complexity. The ingredients were fresh and went well together. Overall, it was a tasty big bowl of noodles.
We also tried the beef ribs fried rice (3.0) which was delicious and generous in size. The dish was well-seasoned with enough sauce and flavours without being too salty. the rice was plump and moist. The ribs was slightly drier than our preference.
For drink, we got the coconut milk (3.5) which was refreshing. The bread pieces were a nice touch to add some texture. The coconut milk was fragant, light, and smooth.
The only downside was that some of the poular dishes for some reasons, are not available during weekends. Besides that, service was efficient and fast.
The food here is great but a really big disadvantage is how expensive it is. Compared to other hot pot places, you can almost get double the amount of food and soo exxxy for soup base.. what was worth it are the noodle bowls. The quail was my favourite dish here
Authentic yunnan food. I think it is the best Yunnan resteraunt in australia. I recommended it many times to many friends. None of them got disappointed. 高山腊肉,鱼,米粉,肥肠都非常棒。
Pork ribs and fried rice were on the menu for us last time we were here, and we were not disappointed. The flavour was great. The tea served by the house (what you get when you request plain tea) is to a high standard, does not go bitter when you leave it to steep. The service is good, it was busy here when we went but it was not loud and the service remained attentive. I can highly recommend this to anyone, I think the atmosphere here is great, cool how it is located in what seems to be an old house (gives it a homely vibe, even though it is not evidently homely from the inside). Look forward to returning.
Make sure you take cash, cause it's cash only! It's the only thing I'm not satisfied.
However, the food here is pretty good, better than some Chinese restaurants in Melb Uni campus. lol
Best Chinese restaurant near uni. Just opposite to the stop 1. I really really love the food here. Some dishes are spicy but ssssso delicious. By the way, make sure you take cash.
I have been there many times. Great Yunnan food, especially the cross-bridge rice noodles. Sometimes, you need to queue during the peak time. My friends and I have ordered stir-fried clam with sour and chill sauce, which is really really spicy. If you like spicy, must try it. Stewed beef tenderloin with potatoes tastes normal. I did recommend the sliced beef with chill sauce. Sliced beef is chewy and tastes yummy. The drink I like is coconut milk juice.
Beautiful place for well-made Yunnan food, a little let down by their not-so-friendly service, and long queues and waiting times during peak hours.
It's not the cheapest Chinese fare, especially when you consider the fact that you can get vastly cheaper options down Chinatown, but the taste is at least somewhat authentic.
A great place for well-made Yunnan meals, with efficient but unfriendly service and a busy atmosphere, however, dishes here are mostly too expensive for their presentation and their price comparison to other Chinese restaurants serving similar dishes.
Went here for lunch. My friend ordered the cold rice noodles with beef mince and vegetable. She said it was tasty and quite spicy but she can handle spicy food so that's ok. I ordered the rice noodle soup with stewed beef tenderloin. To be honest, it was a little oily but I kinda know it's gonna be that way so I didn't complain. However, the beef was super tender, the noodle was good. The size of the dish though, they are huge! We also got the sweet rice porridge for dessert but it wasn't that impressive. What we ordered weren't pricey at all but I did notice that if you order some separate dishes, they could be quite pricey. The place looks small on the outside but it's actually really big inside, especially the 2nd floor. The funny thing was, when we went to pay the bill, they talked to us in Chinese which we had absolutely no idea. But I just played cool and pretended I know what they were talking about and got out of the restaurant with my head held high. Overall, a fun experience.
You want to eat here? Get there early!
Doors open at 5pm, and by 7, there's a line out the door for tables. No doubt servicing the burgeoning Chinese student population in Melbourne.
The Ox tongue stir fried with dried chilli was delicious, so much so that I was still thinking about it a week or so later. Minced beef noodles were good, so were the pig ears in chilli oil (红油猪耳) and garlic cucumbers (拍黄瓜 variation).
I definitely want to go there again, hopefully with more people in tow so that I can try out more dishes.
Be warned, though. The dishes are quite salty, and you'll be quite thirsty later on.
Hot and spicy chinese foods from Yunnan. Not cheap, about $20 per person. However, it was delicious. Patronised mainly by students from across the street.
Cheap, filling, satisfies your cravings for a particular type of food. It's a student hangout extraordinaire and doesn't pretend to be anything else, but it doesn't need to be. It's also unabashedly spicy, but that's what we want so it's all good!
I have been to this place so many times! Great and consistent quality for their noodle soups. Special bridge noodle soup from Yunnan is a must try. Also other stirfry dishes have good serving size and great taste! Environment not the best but slightly more spacious than some other Chinese restaurant! But if you want to have authentic Yunnan good, don't miss this restaurant!
Fantastic... the BBQ lemongrass fish, a Dai speciality, had a smoky BBQ, chilli and lemongrass flavour in spades. We accompanied it with a brown glass noodle beef soup. UnIike a Sichuan noodle soup that has only one gear - chilli - this was a sour salty broth that mixed with the chilli in equal glorious measure, for a taste sensation. There was some overlap in the flavours between these two dishes, so if you want more of a study in contrasts go for one or the other and something else. The Erhai lake fish, with a sour pickle soup, is also excellent. Get there before the queue starts at 6pm.
Yummmm... the Yunnan Cross Bridge Noodle Soup is a must-try; the huge bowl of piping hot soup and slurp-worthy noodles will definitely keep your body comfortably warm during this winter. Although a tad too oily, the soup was delicious and the toppings were interesting; I really like the fish pieces, preserved vegetables and bamboo shoots.
The stir fried glutinous rice noodle was quiet tasty too; spicy at the right amounts to make me keep wanting more!
So far, the food here really 'hit the spot' for me.
Their portions are incredibly huge too; you're not likely to leave this joint with a 'moderately full' stomach (if you clear your plate/bowl)!
The food is tasty! Love it. Yunnan cuisine is quiet special. you may not become a fan at the first time but it really worth a shot.
I wish they could serve in smaller sum. Cannot finish it all the time.
The Yunnan-style rice noodle soup is very tasty, but a bit heavy on the MSG I felt. Had some interesting river shrimp once, and fish steamed in bamboo leaf. The place is very popular and we had to cue up for a seat even at 6:10. There's quite keen to get you out the door to fit in more customers.
Authentic Yunnan rice noodles and dishes. This is an authentic Chinese restaurant to have Yunnan rice noodles and other local dishes. You will see many interesting items on the menu and almost all of the dishes I’ve had tasted fantastic. Serving size is big at reasonable price, great for sharing. I also recommend the lemon rice wine.
Okay quality, the portion is big. Had lunch there today. It's pricy compared to other Chinese restaurants but the portion is huge
Best Chinese Rest. I have been to Colorful Yunan for more than 10 times, food is always fantastic, never let you down, Home made Rice Wine is a must-to-try, Highly Recommanded.
Restaurant is in good location. Noodle soup is bit of oily, but good taste. A nice place for quick meals.
Spicy oily but nice. Very authentic chinese food, its be better if they reduce the amount of oil in the dish. Still enjoyed the food though. My favorite is cold chicken salad
Really good noodles. The cross bridge rice noodles are so good, the soup is great and the serving size is massive. I could eat it all day!
To the guy who said it was full of ppl yet they told him they werent opening for 15mins my guess is all those ppl were actually staff. I know, its easy to be angry when you're hungry!!
Read some reviews then I came by myself, had rice noodle, big portion, very tasty, definitely will come back again
Love this place! I've been to china and it's quite authentic. Also the portion is huge!
Good food but should be clean. Good: the beef rice noodle, spicy prawn, spicy fish were awesome. It is rarely to find a Chinese restaurant which can makes such wonderful Yunnan dishes. It is great for people who can eat spicy food. They also find some dishes which are not spicy.
Bad: My tummy felt a bit upset last time after I dined there. Tofu in spicy fish was sour which is not supposed to have this taste. The waiter was really courteous and explained to us what happened to the dish and immediately got us a new one.
Good things take time...... Really excellent food and really average service. Certainly come here so long as you're not in a hurry.
Nice house special nooodles!! Good portion and nice flavour.
Pretty authentic Yuannan food I guess. Yummy spicy rice noodles. Excellent spicy pork ears. A place that Chinese would enjoy, but probably not for westerners?? Anyway will come back and try their other dishes.
Delicious Food!. This place offers delicious, reasonably priced, authentic (i think) Yunnan food!
Their trademark dish "Yunnan Noodle" is simply divine, the serving size is huge (can be shared by 2 people).. Some dishes can be a bit spicy so be warned if you don't like spicy food.
Highly recommended!
... the broth a heady mix of chicken and pork, and the noodles perfectly slippery for slurping. The soup is admittedly a little less rich as what you find in China but then again, I’m not sure I want to find out what they put in the soup in China. After a quick moment to adjust to the unique flavour of the soup, Chris dug right in, clearly smitten.
Overall we had a good dining experience, even though some dishes were hit and miss and the service was just average (like any Chinese restaurant is really). Being so close to the University of Melbourne, I’m sure they’ll be having a lot of Asian students come in for lunch or dinner.
