A bustling izakaya on bourke street always fully packed. Decided to finally visit after passing by it multiple times. Spacious inside but didn't like how tables were so close to each other. However, service was friendly and prompt - but a bit slow due to lack of staff.
We ordered Maedaya Chips ($5.5), Momo Yakitori ($12), Poke Salad ($10), and a jug of lemon Shochu-Highball also known as Chuhai ($20). My favourite was Momo Yakitori. I wouldn't say it was exactly authentic but they were the freshest and juiciest grilled chicken thighs I've ever had. Each skewer had different flavours: garlic, chili, curry, spicy miso, and herb salt - they all tasted great. Maedaya Chips was also delicious with Ebisu soy sauce sprayed on top finished off with Aonori - savoury with umami twist. We also tried lemon chuhai which was refreshing with a citric kick - didn't taste like alcohol at all! Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience. Will definitely visit again in the near future.
I always go back for assorted vegetable tempura udon, it’s a must have along with the karaage
YUMMMMMM!! Loved the menu variety and every dish was so delicious. Stand out dishes were the tempura and pork belly skewers. Was too busy eating to take anymore photos...
It's a small compact place, but can accommodate good number of people. (No room for privacy).
Food was good and delicious.
Kharage chicken was the best and it was really delicious.
Skewers were good too with a different blend of spices.
Hot pot udon was good and tasty. We tried it first time, it was good but I would have preferred a little Spicer or with little salt.
Peas dish was turn off.
Overall a good place.
Before I forget to mention the tap beer served was also great.
Now I'm not a fan of soupy dishes, but I loved the udon here and would come back any day of the week.
Price is so reasonable, in face very cheap, I had the yasai tempura udon which consisted of a hearty bowl of udon with a generous serving of vegetable tempura.
The tempura soaked in the soup with the perfectly cooked noodles was a match made in heaven.
Would come here for lunch any day of the week.
Service could be improved slightly, took a while to get their attention but nonetheless everyone was very friendly.
4/5 to be updated when I get to try more items on their menu!

Decided to head over to Udon Izakaya Maedaya for dinner on a Saturday night. We arrived at 5pm so it wasn’t busy and we were seated immediately, although by the time we left the place was packed.
We started off with drinks which are available on Zomato Gold 2+2. We had the Umeshu and the Lemon Chu-High. I loved the Umeshu which was light, sweet and tart. The lemon one was very refreshing like lemonade.
For food, we started off with the Chicken Karaage with Sweet Soy Sauce which was delicious. The Karaage was so juicy and tender, whilst still being crispy on the outside. Loved the mayo and sweet soy sauce combination. The Karaage pieces are quite big too.
The Gyoza here was absolutely delicious, probably one of the best Gyoza I’ve had. The skin was super thin and the perfect texture. The filling was very juicy and tender, and had so much flavour. Definitely a must try.
The Momo Yaki Skewers were really delicious too. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside (although the Karaage was slightly juicier and more tender). I loved the different powders/sauces which added a subtle flavour to each skewer.
The Signature Yasai Tempura Udon (hot) was very impressive. The tempura is cooked very well - crispy, light, and served with matcha salt. Loved the different varieties of veggies. The udon was very refreshing and light too in the simple dashi broth.
The star of the night was the Nabeyaki Udon. Served on a table cooked, you can enjoy it while it’s piping hot. The flavour of the broth was amazing, whilst still being light and not overly salty. The udon texture was perfect.
This restaurant is so cosy and I love the authentic Izakaya vibes. This place is perfect for a delicious and affordable meal. Would definitely recommend checking it out!
I love this place! It's an authentic Japanese izakaya with great food, awesome service and cool atmosphere. The skewers are by far my favourite. They are so delicious!!
Nice traditional Japanese dining interior. Welcoming staff and relaxed ambiance but the place is quite cramped and hot.
Chips extremely crisp with spicy seasoning. A recommended and same goes with the squid that is perfectly paired with the kewpie mayo.
The pork belly yakitori has the most tender meat with a soft fatty fat. The 5 skewers are individually seasoned and great for sharing.
The tempura veggies with udon is well valued. A generous amount of udon and crisp vegetables which are sourced locally. The hotpot is also great whether eaten on its own or shared though there was a lack of mushroom and meat.
great value lunch! it’s a small place so expect to wait for a table at peak times. i highly recommend the udon.
Enjoyed their cold Udon noodles when it was so hot weather. The restaurant was quite busy but the line was moving quickly.

Delicious crunchy tempura with well flavored Udon noodles and good price. Staff were friendly, but seemed to be busy. I would come back to eat Tempura again.
Great Udon. As expected the Udon had beautiful bouncy noodles and a clean and sweet broth. The veggie tempura was delicious and the sake selection was amazing. Don't be scared to go for the $35 unlimited sake, you don't have to drink everything but it is more bang for your buck.
waited about 10mins for the first dish to be served which wasn’t too bad. for sides we ordered salmon sashimi and takoyaki. portions were good and salmon was rather fresh. for mains we got the niku (beef) udon and assorted tempura udon. the soup for the niku udon was elite and the udon was cooked well in good portions. tempura came out hot and good. one bad point would be that there was a lot of people walking around and tables are quite close together. felt like someone was about to knock into me a couple times. food was also decently priced. would come again!
If you want amazing udon, this is the place to be. We tried the nabeyaki hotpot udon and it was absolutely amazing. The takoyaki was also fantastic. Food was served really quickly as well. Added 2 to 3 side dishes and we had a meal for 3. Prices are super affordable, the only downside is that they are usually very busy and therefore a long queue outside to get in. Will definitely come back for more!
Very affordable price for the bowl of noodle 🍜 you’re getting! We also ordered the chicken teppanyaki skewer? Not too bad. Didn’t order any drinks that night but the udon broth was 💯, queue was okay (about 10-15mins wait since we arrived about 5.45-6PM)
Not much authentic Japanese izakaya with cute Japanese decorations and interior like these. Got the 🍲🍜 Suki Nabe Udon Hot Pot. The udon noodles were the perfect texture, broth tasty, and came with tempura prawns, some veggies, and mushroom.
We also ordered the 🍙 Grill Onigiri Balls—the perfect appearance with the most beautiful golden brown color but sadly there was so filling though.
Overall, great for its price. They have an all you can drink 🍶 sake option as well if you love to drink!
A surprise gem! Always busy so be prepared to queue for a table. Lovely ambience. Great menu selection at very reasonable prices. Everything we had was excellent. Can’t wait to go back. Highly recommend.
This is a genuine Japanese restaurant staffed by a mainly Japanese crew. Ordered all three of the nabe udon in the menu. The standard one was the tastiest with the spicy miso coming a close second. The udon was firm and equivalent to the ones you find in Japan. Tried only one side dish, the kaarage chicken which was the most popular and came highly recommended. While it was well fried, the meat was below my expectations. I could be wrong but it tasted like it was frozen. Nevertheless, the restaurant overall was excellent and provided a taste of Japanese food outside Japan.
