Good food, relatively cheap prices and big portion sizes. I got the vegetarian char kway teow ($13.80) (first time eating it) and there were plenty of vegetables and the noodles were also very good. However, the dish as a whole was too salty, and there was at least one clump of sauce that apparently did not get mixed in properly, which was not a pleasant experience.
Best nasi lemak I’ve had recently in Melbourne. The curry chicken was consistently warm (quite often they’re lukewarm), and the sambal was very spicy and delicious! Perhaps the serving could be a little bigger at $14.80 but I’m already craving another serving!
The place to get your ultimate Nasi Lemak Fix!
A simply eatery in Carlton that specialises in authentic Malaysian food. The nasi lemak here is a favourite and have always been! The rendang and kerabu sambal is really good and it reminds of the ones in Malaysia.

Must try Malaysian food tucked away in the corner Grattan st / Cardigan st
We tried their nasi lemak + rendang and laksa and they were both very good and satisfying. Would be perfect for those that are looking for a massive lunch since it will fuel you for the rest of the day!

If you're looking for the best nasi lemak place in Melbourne this is the place that you go for.
The nasi lemak here is the bomb.
Always come here for the confort food - nasi lemak wirh fried chicken and kerabu sambal.
Kerabu sambal was spicy but so good to eat with others.
The fried kwe tiaw also yummy.
Hope they will renovate the place to make it bigger so they will have more sitting inside.
Ok, I don’t care what people say about Nasi Lemak House. But this is by far, the nicest restaurant I have ever ordered from Ubereats. I just came back from a very, very, VERY long day at work, I smelt someone eating char kway teow and my craving grew stronger by the hour. I ordered it on my app and scheduled it to arrive at my house between 10.30-11.00pm. I received a call otw home from them saying that they won’t be able to deliver to my place at that time cause they CLOSE at 10pm. I said “ok then, that’s fine.” I was prepared to lose my order to be honest, whether it be “it can’t be made on time before closing” or “no one wants to pick it up”. I was prepared for the worst. I reached home at around 10.15pm. I opened the app. They made my order, AFTER their closing time! Sure it came a little lukewarm cause the driver got stuck in traffic, but the homey taste and smell made me not care. I never thought I could cry because of food, but this char kway teow really made me miss home. Thank you so much Nasi Lemak House. You did a lot more than you know.
Authentic nasi lemak! The sambal is the winner for me, spicy sweet and just sedap. The curry chicken is so full of flavour and tender. Will definitely come back for more :))
Of course not as cheap as in malaysia but just as tasty! Super filling, couldn’t finish it all actually haha. Loved how spicy it was and the staff were nice. Would visit again!
NL House is a small shop that has a succinct menu that features Malaysian classics. Bright and modern, it’s mainly a place where people seem to be picking up takeaways, but there are a few seats available both in and outside of the restaurant if you’re choosing to dine in. Fried Chicken Nasi Lemak w/ Traditional Sambal – $12.80
Best keow char in the area. Blammo fo yo tasto buddo. Nasi lamak was awesome. Get it spicy because that sambal is da bomb. Delivery or tomorrow is still tasty
Food Rating: 😀4/5
Atmosphere Rating: 4/5
Service Rating: 3/5
Nasi Lemak House is always a nice and quick place to have a bite at when around Melbourne University. Their chicken laksa is nice and coconut-y (I would not recommend if you're not into coconut!) and the portions are pretty good as well. The chicken was also tender (if not a little dry) but is always a safe bet when you're hungry for some lunch.
The only downside about the place is that the seating is limited and a little cramped, but that's normally expected at a place in the city.
Portion was great - I can’t finish my char kway teow. Taste was quite authentic. Good menu choices from nasi lemak, laksa, mie goreng, etc. Will definitely come back to try their other dishes. Yummy teh tarik as well. Location is near Melbourne Uni - easy to access!
I absolutely love their Laksa, Mee Goreng and Sambal. I only hope their mini box accommodates all their vegetarian / Vegan menu options to avoid food waste. The serving size suits people with large appetites only.
Would love to see more vegetarian options.
Serves Halal meat.
Had heard quite alot about the Malaysian street hawker restaurant. The place is small & overflows during the peak hour. Make sure you reach before time and grab a seat.
I tried the Fried chicken Nasi Lemak with traditional Sambal as an add-on. The coconut rice was absolutely a pleasure to have, but the overall dish wasn't that impressive experience. Just something new to try with a pocket friendly budget.
For a restaurant that has 'nasi lemak' in its name, it sure serves up a pretty mean bowl of chicken laksa!
Dare I say that this is one of the best laksas in Melbourne....? Yes, I dare!
It was interesting (and therefore unique) that I was asked to select the level of spiciness of the laksa broth.
The chicken was extra tasty and went well with the well seasoned laksa soup.
Oh....and they have a variety of nasi lemaks that you can't find elsewhere too. Definitely a place worth returning to over and over again.
First time have dinner here. Got chicken Nasi Goreng for dinner and I would say it def worths the price. The fried egg topping impressed me the most, would rekon to try. Th drink is not amazing as Nasi goreng but okay.
The nasi lemak is great but sadly they started to charge extra for more sambal (which is way too little that comes with the dish). Bah kut teh isn't that great.
The food was great, staffs are Malaysian which is amazing. Mostly, all Malaysian restaurant in Australia was opened by Chinese and prefer to Chinese Malaysian than real Malaysian. I strongly recommend and rate for 1 of the best Malaysian food in Australia.
It's called Nasi Lemak House but Nasi Lemak isn't the best thing it can do. No.
I ask the owners to rename to Curry Laksa House because it's one of the best curry laksas I've had.
Very flavoursome in the curry Laksa. The broth was especially good and there's a fair amount of mee and accessories. Not so much chicken, but oh well.
Spice - both in the Laksa and Nasi Lemak was more on the reserved side, though if you're not used to spice I'd recommend going without it. , the sambal tastes very home made and true to Hawker style.
Overall a very good place to go if you want Laksa - on the other hand if you're looking for nasi lemak, there's not much value for either flavour, or quantity here.
Great place with always friendly staff and very tasty food. We ordered the Tofu NL and beef redang NL....both delicious!!! A go-to place in Carlton to get away from crowds and just have something good to eat.
Quite authentic Nasi Lemak. If you are into the local Malaysian version, without the Indian influenced curries, then I would recommend NL House.
Delicious and authentic nasi lemak here. I had the beef rendang nasi lemak with Kelantan sambal. It was just the right amount of spice for someone who can't handle too much. The beef was nicely cooked. Well paired with the fragrant rice cooked in coconut cream, salty ikan bilis, crunchy peanuts, some cucumber for freshness and a half boiled egg. Service was quick and efficient. Food is reasonably priced with decent portions of food. Simple interior with minimal decorations. I would definitely come back again to satisfy my Malaysian food cravings.
Ordered the nasi lemak chicken with the no. 3 sambal at 12:03pm, just as they opened and the place was empty bar one table. It took 15 mins to have the dish ready. While I am eating many other patrons were complaining about the wait as well. Considering it’s nasi lemak, Which is rice, fried chicken, fried peanuts and fried fish, you would have thought some of it would be premade and therefore faster?!
That being said their nasi lemak is really quite good, their sambal sauce has a good kick to it and you can really taste the fragrant coconuty flavours in the rice. I would love to come back to try their char kuay teow
Great nasi lemak.
I only really went here because I heard they were gonna a new resto in Northcote so before I ventured there, I wanted to try their stuff here.
Certainly didn't disappoint and would come back for their mee goreng.
Great tasting nasi lemak! Also a shout for their rendang and fried chicken. Chili sauce was not that spicy, so challenge yourself to ask for the highest level (level 3). Decent portion. The downside: fried chicken is only available in lower thigh, as they use other cuts for chicken curry.
Excited to try other dishes!
Recommended to me by my Malaysian friend, I decided to try Nasi Lemak with a couple of uni friends during our lunch break. Portions are more than generous for its price, and if you're not extremely hungry you could probably get away with sharing for two. The Nasi Lemak is very filling; the meat was well seasoned and an interesting experience. Food came out quickly and there is outdoors seating. Friendly service and great when on a budget.
Good food and great packaging when ordering takeaway. Would recommend the fried chicken nasi lemak. The sambal is similar to back home in malaysia. Come in and have a try
Having changed owners a few years ago, they've done an exceptional job maintaining the quality, flavour, portion size, and variety.
With a fresh look, front counter and better packaging, I continue to visit this place for my nasi lemak fix (as I have been for the past 12 years).
The price, as expected, has gradually been trending up in keeping with the current cost of living etc, so can't fault them there.
The traditional sambal is one of the best in Melbourne (spicy and dry, as sambal should be). My order is always: traditional nasi lemak with fried chicken.
This cosy place is serving some amazing foods. We loved our orders of Calamari nasi lemak and chicken laksa. Calamari was perfectly crisp and the sambal + rice flavors were wonderful. You just don't feel the chilli alone in traditional version, there is so much more. Beware the people ordering laksa, the portion quantity was huge as per me, so I got to take home most of it. 😊
Like I always say, you can't go wrong with Malaysian and Indonesian food. But this is one of the many ways it can go so very right. Try out the nasi lemak and laksas here. I had to go mild or medium, cause I fear my tastebuds have semi-assimilated to Melbourne's, but I asked for a side of sambal in case I needed that kick. Putting my assimilating spice-buds aside, their laksa's are so so good. One of the best in Melbourne I'd say.
Best Malaysian food in Melbourne! It's quite spicy too perfect for my south Asian tastebuds. The chicken laksa and the seafood rice noodle is a must have!!
Had the calamari rings Nasi Lemak, and it was so great. Portion sizes were worth it for the price point, and they were really generous. Calamari was fried well, and it was perfectly cooked. Rice was a little firm, but the coconut milk flavour came through. The sambal was almost as good as what you can get in Malaysia. Very authentic, will definitely come back.
THAT SAMBAL SO GOOOOOD! 😍😍
Love the fact that the sambal is as spicy as indicated in the menu 🌶🌶🌶
Seriously good authentic nasi lemak 👌👌
I tried UberEATS for the first time and picked NL House for dinner. There was technical issue with the UberEATS location map, so the rider couldn't locate my home. Estimated delivery time was 30 min but the food only arrived close to 2 hours later as the rider on bicycle (thought it would be Uber driver not cyclist!) was circling in the park for 1 hour, going to the wrong direction guided by the Uber apps even though the address is right! This was rectified only after we called Uber support to inform the rider to switch navigation to Google map ! The food obviously has turned cold so we have to heat it up in the microwave. I ordered beef rendang nasi lemak and seafood char kuey teow. The food is tasty, normal portion. Probably will taste better if we didn't have to reheat the food, fresh out of the wok!
Best nasi lemak and char Kueh tiaw you could find in Carlton with reasonable price and portion. The char Kueh tiaw can be compared with the Malaysian standard honestly! The waitress was very friendly too!
The store which serves the national dish of Malaysia and they do serve it well. In fact it is one of the better nasilemak in Melbourne. May not be Village Park standard (Malaysian's would know) but hey, we need a quick fix once in a while right?
Great range of nasi lemak varieties to choose from. Kelantan has been my favourite as it has a sweet note rather than pure burning heat.
Of course with an array of other Malaysian dishes to choose from, I would still stick to their nasi lemak nevertheless.
One of my favourite spot for curry laksa noodle, their curry laksa soup is different from other restaurants, (p/s: you may ask for spicy if you like the heat) love the herb taste of it, especially the fried chicken, love the thinly sliced carrot, added the crunchy bites with the noodle.
He always order the Nasi Lemak Chicken, this is with Kerabu Sambal. We went in first when the lunch time just started, the rice was a little too soft, not enough resting.
Very disappointing Teh Tarik, which is the milk tea, tasteless and no tea flavour at all.
Had char Kway teow, Nasi Lemak with beef rendang and laksa. Best is the char kway teow and beef rendang. Give the laksa a miss, seriously. Nothing like Singapore laksa. This is more like curry laksa with many extra unwanted veggies in there like carrots...ewww.
Oh how I love some Malaysian Nasi Lemak on a half day out! Sun was shining, wasn't at work in time for a late Lunch = Lyf
Have always loved this place since being a student just down the road at Melbourne Uni., just harks of waking up to a Nasi Lemak breakfast in my little coastal hometown in Melaka. This place delivers great nasi lemak (Malaysian coconut rice), with decent sambal and fried chicken! Curry looks great too! No frills lunch spot with good service and good ol' lively Carlton crowd!
Nasi lemak and a walk in the Carlton Gardens after that 👍
My favorite go to place for Chicken Nasi Goreng!
Just love it and haven't found any better yet.
Have been there many many times with great consistent taste.
Would I go Back?
YES YES YES

NL House met my expectations. Picked the Vegetarian Laksa and was not disappointed. The soup was full bodied and was enriched with full of flavours. Vegetables were slightly crunchy which was good texture combo with the tofu and noodles. For people who want it spicy, go for the hottest option as the coconut milk suppresses the capsaicin. Left feeling full and satisfied. Would recommend it to my buddies.
I had (very very spicy) Chicken Pad Thai Noodles, they were so good, I'm so glad the staff understood me pretty well when I asked them to make the noodles spicy. The serving portions are sufficient for two. I could manage to finish my noodles in two meals. Excellent service, staff is friendly. Pocket friendly rates. Located around Uni Melb campus. Even their chicken and beef curry served with rice is pretty good. Delicious malay cuisine feast ! :)
Well, old school uni favourite food.
As international student will always missed hometown food
Since 10 years ago already try this nasi lemak @ NL House (Nasi Lemak House), still the same place, but with new renovated store.
So far I haven't found good nasi lemak in Melbourne - if I want to eat nasi lemak will be here is my first choice,
The sambal I choose the traditional - A hint of spicy taste.
Outstanding laksa! Super generous portions, and not too expensive. Plus deliciously spicy if that's how you like it. Limited seating space, but they do take away, so it's not relly an issue. Always packed too, and full of uber eats drivers waiting, so you know it's good. Pro tip: If you're vego but not vegan, remember to ask for the egg noodles in the Laksa, the default vego option is rice noodles, which is perfectly fins but the egg noodles add something special
Full Time Wholesomeness

The restaurant is really cosy and simple. There are more eating area outside, probably just for 3-4 tables inside at most. The menu is short as there is just very general Malaysian dishes like Nasi Lemak, Laksa and similar. Good for a quick meal and pick-ups.
Had the chicken laksa here one night and asked them to make it spicy--- and it was the best laksa I've ever had! I usually love laksa even though the flavour is a bit on the sweet side. But whatever they added made it have a great balance of flavours. Had the seafood nasi goreng tonight and it was fab...seafood was cooked perfectly and more importantly very well seasoned. Authentic flavours and great service.
The Nasi Kerabu is not quiet as local as I have thought it to be. Nonetheless, the Nasi lemak is spicy and good with a huge portion of coconut rice too.
Rejuvenated and it's on the right track ....
Always happy to see family owned and operated food business that will represent their own individualistic cuisine style and genre.
This place is no different and just done that, started "humbly - as it is" and has grown to represent themselves and food better. Still well priced and more importantly taste "authentically" good.
All the very best.
Great little local place. It's small with not many tables but popular with students and locals. Food is always tasty with big serves. Nasi lemak always good.
Am a regular at NL house. This place is great for the price, always busy and the food very tasty. Try the beef rendang and a tea terek, both really good. Friendly staff too.
Fast , friendly , honest , good valued food. What more can one ask for? The nasi lemak is to die for and the mee goreng is super tasty ! Definitely recommend and will definitely be back !!
Simple the best Nasi Lemak you can get from Melbourne. My favourites will be the Nasi Lemak Kerabu. Is spicy and flavourful. Priced Well and portioned ok. The only not so good thing is their Nasi lemak sometimes is not Hot enough (Rice). Their Stir Fry stuff need a bit better
The most authentic (spicy as!) sambal I've tried in Melbourne after having the nasi lemak at famous Malaysian places such as Papparich, Old Town White Coffee, Mamak, etc. My Australian and Southeast-Asian friends particularly like the laksa, with its varying degrees of heat, or the nasi lemak (of all kinds!). My personal favourite is the char kuey teow (flat rice noodles with oyster sauce).
Great service; friendly and approachable. Rustic interior and soft upbeat music make a cosy ambience for customers - from family gatherings to business meetings to students wanting to enjoy a quiet, solitary meal. As a frequent visitor, I observe these diverse groups bond over good food - especially those unfamiliar with the cuisine. Love of food is a major part of the cultures within Southeast-Asia and it's often hard to express to others how integral a component it is. But why not show them instead? Well, you'd hate to be let down by an inauthentic restaurant. I'm glad to admit I don't have that fear with NL House.
I love that NL House is also vegetarian friendly, with vegetarian Laksas and mee goreng and more. Some meals are even gluten free. However, as a general note: if I was a vegan/vegetarian with serious allergies or dietary disorders, I would be careful with what I order (in any southeast Asian restaurant really) and always clarify with the chef or server that the dish is 100% vegetarian - sometimes chicken stock may be used etc.
All-in-all, a stellar place for lunch or dinner. Thank you NL House.
NL House for short, this place has been a crowd favourite for many Malaysian students and even locals. Their specialty is the Nasi Lemak, obviously, but they also do a pretty mean & spicy mamak style nasi, mee and kuay teow goreng. Their prices are very reasonable for the area as they mainly target university students living locally. A meal will only cost around $11-13 or if you're not feeling very hungry a mini Nasi Lemak is around around $8 a box. They have different types of sambal to suit your tastebuds which are also available for sale. They have refreshments in the fridge for take away and if you're lucky you might find soya, teh tarik, cendol or bandung packaged and ready to go. They are on menulog so you can order for take away or delivery. FYI, they have been voted by Menulog for best Malaysian in the CBD!
Very quick service. Inside seats a very few number of people so I would avoid coming with a large group/family unless you plan on seating outside.

Ordered 4th or 5th time from NL House, and it was through Ubereats, it was only take away, but my colleagues and I were very impressed by the quality and the the taste. Flavour full, delicious comfort food.
Would love to try when I'm there to have their food freshly cooked!
I came here for the Chilli Sambal and it did not disappoint, delicious 😋
The Nasi goreng on the other hand was way tooo sweet. Unsure why sweet chilli sauce was poured on the omelette....
My friend loved her Char Kuay Teow and Chilli Sambal.
Time for something different next time!
Good comfort food! We've been coming here since uni years when Aunty was in charged back then. We love the new upgrade and new management. Never had bad experience, only sometimes Aunty was quite fierce in the old days when you asked for more sambal. Now, they are very generous with the sambal :D We love their nasi lemak traditional and mie goreng chicken. The fried calamari rings are nice too! We'll keep coming back for more!
The food is quite decent and not expensive. Ordered the Bee Hoon Salad with Lemongrass Beef and had a small can of ISO-100. Quite tasty and nice service as well. Just note that the inside sit down area is really small, and there were 10 of us, and door kept opening and closing because of people coming in and going out. Best suited for a dinner with one friend, or when the weather is warmer, can sit outside.
I’ve been told by multiple Malaysians that when they leave their country, it’s the food they miss more than anything else. Well, i say to them, look no further. NL House is the closest thing to feeling like you're in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Friendly staff, very chill, calm environment and the food - (i dont use this lightly) but OMG. Incredibly satisfying. (The picture will complete the rest of the review)
Came here for one dish only - the Nasi Lemak. I was not disappointed. The sambal was hot, the marinated chicken fried to perfection, the ikan bilis and peanuts crispy, the coconut rice was cooked to perfection. Such a simple recipe but many Melbourne Malaysian restaurant just can't get it right.
NL house - you've nailed it and I can't wait to return for more!!!

Previously known as Nasi Lemak House, NL House underwent a facelift a number of years ago and emerged transformed into a slightly smaller, but much more modern and hip little place that caters for both eat-in and takeaway. The menu is simple and easy to navigate, being neatly categorised into the different rice and noodle dishes plus snack boxes.
Tasty mee goreng and nasi goreng. However the mee goreng was very oily. The nasi goreng was good with an egg on top and tomato in the rice. This is quite different to other nasi gorengs i've had where it's more like a fried rice. Overall a tasty dish at a reasonable portion and price for the Carlton area. Service was alright. Was a pretty long wait however.
I travelled far to reach this famous nasi lemak shop in the university quarter of Melbourne. I had nasi lemak with chicken six months ago and today tried the beef rendang meat. It was yummylitious. I finished the beef kua (the curry gravy) too early and had the cheek to ask for more kua. The waitress happily got me some. Definitely the best in Melbourne and comparable to the best in Malaysia.
I love NL house traditional sambal and ChaKauyTew seafood. Their chilli is so tasty like a home cooked :) . CKT is another level of stir fried flats rice noodle, U must experience it when ur in Melbourne!
I had the vegetarian nasi lamak with traditional sambal. The portion was sizeable, and there was just enough sambal for the generous portion of rice. They didn't tone down the delicious traditional sambal - it's actually spicy, which is something you have to note when dining this close to Lygon Street. The tofu puffs are a treat, too (though it's really not hard to sell me on deep-fried foods).
Great for a quick bite with a friend - there's just enough seating indoors and outdoors. Oh, and it's not BYO.
Reading the general reviews (portion is small, sambal is small, menu is small, laksa and kuey teow not good etc) makes me feel like everyone is bullying the little guy who didn’t want any attention to start with.
If you’re brave enough to order anything BUT Nasi Lemak at a restaurant call Nasi Lemak House, you should absorb the consequences of high risk gamble.
The Kerabu sambal with pickled onions still makes me sweat. It scratches my itch from time to time, plus it’s literally 5 minute walk from home. I can’t complain.
The best nasi goreng I've ever had, by a mile. Unbelievably delicious and I'm not even much of a fried rice person. So much food mmm I think I have to go back there right now!
One of the best Nasi Lemak in town. Although the previous carnation was slightly better, the quality is still up there. Love the Sambal and will definitely return.
Over the years I've been a repeat customer at this restaurant, both before and after their refit. Reasonably plain before, the interior has been transformed with a bright orange colour scheme that is very cheering. The food is consistantly delicious, with a simple concise menu of Malaysian dishes. The char kuay teow is awesome- well charred noodles, egg tendrils and a choice of chicken, tofu or seafood. The nasi lemak is awesome and comes with some of the punchiest most flavoursome sambal ever. The beef rendang is so soothing on a cold day. Tender meat and warming spice.
The staff are friendly, the space comfy and the free pitchers of water, a thoughtful addition. Some of the best food in the area, with a real sense of quality and generosity.
I've been coming to eat at NL House since I started uni, way back in 2005. I would come almost religiously to have the Char Keow Teow and Laksa, which I thought was the best in Melbourne and the most like the dishes I enjoy whenever I'm in Malaysia. When it closed down and changed hands, I was really heart broken, like an old friend had gone away; a touch stone of my life was suddenly no longer there. However NL House re-opened and while the decor is different, very hip, their food is still the same kind of amazing. I go there whenever I can, in any weather, making a special trip if I have to. The prices are lower than is reasonable for such delicious, generously portioned food and the staff there always seem happy and attentive. I bring everyone I know here to get the best noodles and Nasi Lemak this side of the Malacca strait. I don't know anywhere else you can get such rich keow teow, with sambal that puts you in another world of spice, where you can wash it down with a 100 Plus. It's great that in Melbourne, a town where restaurants come and go as quickly as the weather, that this great Carlton instituion, that can be it's own place while still taking you back to the hawker centres of Ipoh or Singapore, is still going strong, maybe stronger than ever. I love NL House and highly recommend it to any and all.
P.S the fried tofu is to die for!
Quite surprised to see the recent negative comments........Also someone complaining about a meal for $11.50, makes me wonder if some of these cats are so used to mee goreng from the supermarket they don't see value when it's smacking them in the face. I live in Carlton North and went to NL House with a friend as a local alternative to laksa king & Chef lagenda. I got the vege laksa and he had the chicken laksa. Service was super quick and the staff were lovely. Price was incredible for the gigantic portions and the laksa flavour was spot on. We both left intent on returning. Good work NL House!
The best Nasi Lemak in Melbourne, no doubt about it.
Friendly staffs, nice choice of dishes and great environment. Highly recommended.
Felt like being at home.
Great experience! The service was speedy yet personable. For the low price I was more than satisfied with the Chicken Curry Nasi Lemak that I ordered. Portions were generous, and the flavours and aroma of the meal were quite wonderful. I would definitely be a happy repeat customer and recommend that anyone in the vicinity give this little house a visit.
