We ordered the prawn and pork dry noodle. One with the rice noodle and another with egg noodle. The sauce that they used contain lards which is great and what I think gave it that tasty flavour! Too bad that the pork slices in the noodle are tough, dry and tasteless.
We've tried almost all Vietnamese restaurants within 500m walking distance from North Richmond Station.
I had lunch with a group of mates who were identified as Rice Vermicelli lovers.
This time we wanted to try a new Vietnamese restaurant over our normal distance.
Checked my food apps and it came up in the first list "Thanh Phong", this restaurant actually had really good review.Alrightey, It's time to prove it!
We arrived to this restaurant and welcomed by a friendly wait staff.
The place was clean, modern interior design and bright.
The wait staffs were very attentive and service really good.
I know that many people would get confused when they go to Vietnamese restaurants as they do have many options with unfamiliar dish name.
Don't worry when you come to this restaurant, the friendly wait staff would narrow it down for you and just have a look for the options that you feel like without you even ask for it.
I ordered rice vermicelli with shredded pork and spring rolls for $12.00.
The food came pretty fast and everything was served hot, fresh and good presentation.
Ohh apparently in this restaurant, the wait staff would give you the options to choose whether you want to go with chicken or pork spring rolls unlike surrounding Vietnamese restaurants.
The portion was generous enough and shredded pork was tasty and not dry.
Spring rolls were well fried, seasoned and served crispy. It was very crunchy outside and tender inside - amazing.
Overall, we had a great time having lunch in Thanh Phong. The food had great taste, good quality with reasonable price.
Definitely happy to recommend this place.

This is basically the only dish I eat here. Grilled lemongrass chicken rice vermecelli with nuoc nam dressing .
It's delicious .
Enough said .
id say I've been here 30+ times now and i would say its one of the best viet around..
crispy quail, chicken coleslaw, salty squid you can't go past.
After being mesmerized by The Gertrude Street Projection Festival, on our way back home, we ended up going to this eatery for dinner by fluke.
Ended up ordering Lemon Chicken, Stir Fried Curry Beef, Stir Fried Squid and Vegetable and Special Fried Rice. We were served complimentary Tea during our wait for the food.
The very friendly Manager / Attendant managed to get our order in 5 minutes time and oh Boy, everything was so perfectly cooked and tasted yum.
The dishes of the day were the Fried Rice, Stir Fried Squid and Curry Beef. Both the stir fries were cooked to perfection, lightly spiced and were totally flavorful. Fried Rice was sauted in a dash of oil with chicken and Shrimps had very distinctive flavor to it and was a beautiful dish in itself.
Lemon Chicken was a very tasty crispy chicken served with lemon sauce that was sweet and sour.
The courteous Manager / Attendant, realizing that we were Indians, served three types of chillies to satiate our yearning for spicy food.
The place was crowded and noisy on a Saturday night and the table and chairs little uncomfortable for a group of 4 but all was forgotten the moment food was served.
Thang Phong is a pocket friendly eatery that serves good Vietnamese food and we wouldn't mind going there the next time.
This place was Pho-real, growing up in Melbourne, this is the taste of Melbourne Pho, I love it. Portions are good, perfect for a weekend lunch if you’re strolling through Richmond Victoria St. Broken rice was accompanied with the meat cake, something that a lot of vietnamese places don’t include these days and its a shame because it is mad delicious. We also went for the prawn spring rolls, and didn’t regret at all. Nice flavours and a food experience that will make you want to go back for dinner.
I went here a couple of weeks back with a friend for lunch on a Sunday. Our criteria for finding a restaurant was 1. must be Vietnamese cuisine (due to cravings) and 2. must have eftpos facilities. The latter criteria ruled out quite a few Vietnamese restaurants along Victoria street but then we found this place. It was reasonably full which we also took to be a good sign. We got decently priced Bun Bo Hue and a coca-cola each. The Bun Bo was excellent, huge portion, tasted great, warmed my soul. Service was efficient. I didn't take too much notice of the decor because I was eagerly shovelling the food into my face, so I guess the decor isn't noticeably offensive to the eyes. I do recommend this place for a good feed.
Great cheap fast Viet food. We tried the combination broken rice and so far this place serves the dish best on Victoria St. Pork chop was well marinated and fish sauce was light and balanced. The place is clean as well.
Can't go wrong with Vietnamese on Victoria Street; in fact, many can rival those in Footscray. Thanh Phong is one of the more consistent ones and also one of the cleaner ones on Victoria Street. Their menu run the gamut from pho to broken rice to congee and to numerous cooked to order dishes. It will probably take me a year to try everything on the menu. Creatures of habit that we are, we tend to gravitate towards the broken rice. The grilled pork is the star of the dish - never dry, succulent and full of flavour. Service can be a bit abrupt, the man manning the floor looks like he is always rushing to get back to watching the tv.
My go to favourite in Victoria st. Been coming for 20 years and love the place. Family run - lovely family who hand make all the rolls and dumplings (you almost always see them sitting at the front table near the kitchen rolling spring rolls by hand). I've lived and travelled in multiple countries and hands down these guys still make the best prawn spring rolls I've had. My other favourite is their 'Thanh Phong' special egg noodle soup with seafood - just fab. Their Vietnamese pancakes, meat prawn on sugar cane and crispy quail are all superb. Highly recommend.
Quick go to along Victoria street. Consistently good and fast food, they always manage to squeeze you in. Love the salty and spicy calamari and the chicken coleslaw.
Good Vietnamese food but poor service. Pho and other noodle dishes were authentic and tasty. Atmosphere was busy and rushed, but what can you expect for such good prices?
The best Vietnamese food in Melbourne without a doubt!
I eat here weekly without fail and for whatever reason I can't I absolutely crave the food. Friendly staff, quick, cheap and cheerful.
Don't bother looking anywhere else for decent Vietnamese food!!!!!
My boyfriend and I eat here every week! It's the only place we will eat Vietnamese!! Best food, authentic flavours! Best on victoria street! YUM

This is our favourite local restaurant. The food is cheap, tasty and they get it to you super fast so it's great when you are hungry! The staff always greet us with a big smile and quick service.
Food was fresh and service was pleasant. Lemon chicken was a bit of a let down but all other dishes were nice. For a fully licensed restaurant, they didn't have any vodka.
Beef pho was nice.
For authentic Vietnamese noodles (pho) then Thanh Phong is the place to visit.
Great Food, Great Value!. We have been eating here for around 25 years and travel from wherever we are living at the time regardless of the distance. We used to go at least once a week but now we are in the country we visit about once a month and the food, service and value have remained consistently good. We prefer the Vietnamese dishes rather than some of the more Chinese style meals, they have a clean, fresh flavour and their soups are always good. For a quick, no fuss, delicious meal you can't beat it.
Very fine Pho. Decor is a bit gloomy for lunchtime. But, tables were clean, staff were professional and the pho was excellent. Not too salty, not fatty with lots of veggies, chicken and rice noodles. Recommend.
Good value. Taste great. Chicken dry rice noodles and chicken pho are great. enjoyed a pleasant quick lunch and staff were good too
We parked our car on Victoria street looking for somewhere for lunch. The addy of the green grocer was standing out the front of her shop, my husband asked 'where is the best place for lunch?' She wrote down the name of this place for us and said it was most authentic. So off we trott down the street by six shops for lunch. Service is friendly and food is pretty nice. Worth the six shop walk down the street to fill our belly's.
Delish. Have been twice and food's been amazing both times! Would highly recommend the mongolian beef! Great value for money! Will def be returning soon!
Try the Bun Bo Xao and Prawn Spring Rolls - best on the street.
Love this place! The rice paper rolls were smaller than other places in Richmond but still tasty. I ordered the rice noodle soup with vegetables and tofu. The vegetables in the soup were fresh and there was plenty of them. The broth was delicious and not too salty. Good value and great food. Will definitely be back again.
My Favourite Food Place. Love it, go with family a lot. We travel from Blackburn area for this food....yes we bypass Box Hill. We are hopeless and order the same yummy things every time, so what eh? If it aint broke don't fix it!........I want to go now.... all this typing is making me want a Thanh Phong meal.
Victoria St favourite! We eat on Victoria St at least every second weekend and this is by far our top #1, everything on the menu does not disappoint and like most establishments on the street is well priced. The best dish on the menu by far is the BBQ chicken rice and for entrees, it's the prawn spring rolls. You really can't go past a cheap and cheerful meal that is yumtastic.
My favourite local Vietnamese. Distinguished by its lime green feature wall and open window front, it has a fresh and casual feel and is perfect for a low key night out. L The waiters are interesting characters but you'll soon become fond of them. Would recommend: rice paper rolls, wonton noodle soup with beef, Vietnamese coleslaw salad and Mongolian lamb. Enjoy!
Best Vietnamese restaurant around. My family and i have been going to thanh phong for 17 years and it hasn't changed a bit and is still the best and closest food to authentic Vietnamese food. i especially recommend ordering the number 22 on the menu and a lemon drink. best restaurant around. 10/10 rating
Don't let the customers put you off.. Our decision to eat at Thanh Phong was based on the day being a pretty hot autumn day. I didn't fancy being enclosed in a shop fronted, crowded Vietnamese restaurant when the sun was shining directly in. Thanh Phong had it's big window open. K, not a classy view (though it can be entertaining), or 'fresh' air exactly, but it worked to tempt us in as we could see it was clean and buzzing.
Do you have 'that' rule about a Chinese/Malaysian/Sri Lankan place where 'it must be good because it's filled with people of the same nationality as the food? We do. So, it was a bit of a challenge for me, after being seated in the midst of this place to note that there didn't seem to be a single Vietnamese family in the restaurant. Ohh, we could be in trouble here! Only we weren't. Clearly the prices aren't the cheapest on Victoria Street, but they certainly weren't extraordinary ott either. Perhaps though it's the prices that keep the locals away.
Our first selection however, put paid to our concerns. The Prawn Rice Paper Rolls were the best we've tried. Completely FILLED with *whole* small prawns, not halves they were delicious and were offered with a great dipping sauce that turned even our prawn-suspicious seven-year-old into a convert. That's a bonus in my book. So, the prices are a bit steeper, but that is reflected in the make-up of the dish.
Rice Vermicelli with Spring Rolls and Shredded Pork was another winner. The pork was shredded almost as finely as the noodles, and the spring rolls were deliciously crunchy and a great foil to the dressing. All of the family enjoyed this too (we're doing well to have all three kids like two meals in a row here).
A modest serve of a stir fry in the form of Beef Curry as selected by one of the kids was pretty good too. Never a huge fave with me, this was was better than usual as it clearly wasn't just a curry powder sauce (curry powder seemed to be used, but not only). The variety of veg in this was lovely too, wong na bok, carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, baby corn (why do kids love that so much?) and a bit of onion.
I liked the Combination Omelette more however. Huge serve, crispy edges, filled with big chunks of meat, chicken and seafood and a delightful sauce. Perhaps if I am being pernickety I could say a little too much bean shoots, but, that's my call - just. The omelette itself was light and delicate, a lovely dish and well worth the price.
San choi bow (though it was spelt differently on the special) amounted to one lettuce cup overflowing with filling. Would have liked a few more cups of lettuce to spread out the filling between us as it was a generous amount of pork (other choices were offered). Yummy, sweet/savoury filling, but yes, more lettuce please!
Service was very friendly. The place is a little haphazard in the way some Vietnamese restaurants can be. Forks, spoons and chopsticks wrapped in paper napkins are pretty much left dumped in a pile on the table, but the tea in thermoses is hot and good and ice water was brought to the table quickly.
There's a lot of restaurants on this strip, and we've yet to try many, so it might be a while before we got back here, simply because we want to continue experimenting, but we would certainly choose to go to "TP" again. We're not Vietnamese, but just because we aren't it doesn't mean we don't know what good Vietnamese tastes like. If you take out the offal side of things, I don't think the flavours are dumbed down for western palates like some other foods can be. In any case, the food here was better flavours and ingredients than plenty of Vietnamese places we've tried, so, be you Vietnamese or not, I'd suggest giving this place a go.
Standout pancakes. When I lived in Melbourne circa 2005-2009, I could never discern much difference between the boatload of Vietnamese restaurants along this stretch of Victoria Parade (or all the restos in Chinatown, either.) The Age Good Food Guide wasn’t much help, and I had not heard of Urbanspoon back then. They still seem much the same to me, but my friends favour Thanh Phong, so I met them there for my final dinner in Melbourne. (Until I re-immigrate Down Under next spring, fate willing.)
The fried spring rolls were OK, but not much more character to them than what you’d get frozen from Cole's to fry up yourself. Cold spring rolls in rice-flour wraps are a better indicator of a restaurant’s character. The cabbage mix of Thanh Phong’s Vietnamese coleslaw with chicken was well-marinated and moderately spicy with cilantro and a hint of hot pepper. Best dish of the night was the Vietnamese “pancake” with a mix of pork and prawns. The texture of the crunchy folded-over crust that encased the bean sprouts, meat and veg inside reminded me of an Indian dosa, except it was a lot thinner and not made of chickpea flour. Still a fun dish to eat. Thanh Phong’s food was fresh-tasting and I didn’t get an MSG headache from it. I’d go back, and if I return to dine with my mates Down Under, I have a feeling I will.
Yum!. The prices are reasonable for the simple fresh food and quick efficient service. Vietnamese coleslaw was fresh and crunchy! Spring rolls were spot on and the rice paper rolls were tasty. Will put this on the regular list.
Can't go wrong with Thanh Phong. With so many choices for bun bo hue and rice vermicelli on Victoria St, this is one of our regular joints.
Always have a great meal here. And the guys on the floor are really friendly and efficient. The rice paper rolls are delicious, and although I usually get Pho Tai, this time I tried Chilli Beef Noodle Soup and it was fantastic. Stole some Chicken Coleslaw across the table, having that next time
Worth it...cheap and cheerful. Very fast service cheerful, clean decor, salted squid winner, massive pancake.
Clean, quiet, cheap with fresh tasty food. Would certainly go back.
Not bad for a random. Staff borderline rude, food quiet good. Def not a gourmet restaurant but cheap not cheerful.
Cravings. The best rice paper rolls on the street. The squid skewers are brilliant and I'm in love with the coleslaw. Pricey for the street though but still recommended. Sadly the delightfully surly staff (my Vietnamese mates consider them to be the rudest and funniest on Vic Street and refuse to translate their comments for me) seem to have been given a charm makeover along with the decor.
This is my FAVOURITE Vietnamese place in Melbourne. I'm a 10 yr customer, consistantly good. Best staff, best black pepper beef, prawn and pork soup, salted squid. Cater to dietary requirements. I have nothing but praise for this old faithful.
Always serves up good food. Thanh Phong has been a consistent favorite of mine over the past few years. They have recently renovated and the place looks a bit more "classy" than before but prices are still reasonable.
Spring rolls are made from scratch (on some days, you might see an inappropriately dressed middle aged man in a long sleeve business shirt and pants rolling spring rolls on one of their tables!), beef noodles are good and broken rice very tasty.
Dumplings For Breakfast
+4.5
Go here for Vietnamese Pancake. This is my favourite Victoria St place for Vietnamese pancake and prawn spring rolls. They somehow just taste better here. Otherwise it's all pretty standard Vic St fare. It has one of the nicer interiors though, so that also lifts it a little bit above the rest.
I've been coming here for over 14 years, with my uni friends to now with my family. Fabulous place! The seafood rice noodle soup is my staple meal but the kids love the spring rolls and the common post meal lollipop! Hubby adores the combination fried noodles. Always great, fresh and fast. Service is friendly too. I rate Thanh Phong the best Vietnamese restaurant on Victoria St. It's so cheap too!
