This has always been the hot pot spot to go for any celebration or family gatherings. As you enter, the restaurant's beautiful themed decor cannot go unnoticed. The seating arrangement is very structured and is very comfortable. Although we are familiar with the boss of the restaurant, the staff, I must say, are not very verbally welcoming at the tables on the few occasions I have been here.
There is an entire bench in the middle of the restaurant filled with a variety of aromatic, spicy, umami and other delectable sauces to dip your meat and vegetables in. These sauces are unlimited and you get to pick your own sauces without any cost. Go ahead and explore the different combinations of these flavours. If you don't know where to start, I recommend the chilli oil, sesame paste, a bit of garlic, spring onions,
If you haven't had hotpot before, this restaurant serves each individual with their own pot of soup which you get to pick any base (could be seafood, oxtail, chicken, sichuan). The dining group can order a variety of seafood, meats, or vegetables to share. Waiters are always ensuring you have enough soup stock as they can refill without any extra cost.
I ordered my favourite oxtail soup because I love how soft the meat falls of the bone and how hearty the broth. Be careful, it is extremely hot and I always manage burn my tongue every time at this restaurant despite warning myself. Other soup bases I would recommend are: Abalone + black chicken soup, seafood soup and/or do half-half with a spicy stock (only for the strong!).
There is so much variety of high quality meats and seafoods as there are of vegetables, mushrooms, etc. I've never tried their main dishes but I've heard many good reviews about it. The ox tongue and lamb are meats I'd definitely recommend in the soup, as well as their meat balls and prawn balls with cheese. They always present to the table a beautiful arrangement of meats, seafoods, mushrooms, and even noodles, which make your mouth drool.
We had some watermelon juice on the side, which I absolutely loved and wished I had more of it. It was on the sweet side yet still maintained the flavour of the watermelon, which was so refreshing in the mouth.
Price is definitely up there and by the time you are full, you've already splurged at least to $50 each person.
Would definitely come back!
The home to amazing hot pot! The concept at Dainty is individual hot pot which is perfect if you're going with a group of people with different requirements of the soup base.
I really like the concept where you get to choose and pick your own soup base and you get your choice of making your own sauces at an extra cost.
There is a good range on the menu and their seafood and meat platters are amazing, perfect for sharing. Highly recommend this place as their soup base and broth are amazing.
What I love here is their individual pot so you get to have your own and not share with others. Ingredients are fresh, soup are delicious and their sauces are abundant. Highly recommended
We love hotpot, and we have come to Dainty Sichuan in the CBD multiple times! We love how they do individual soups, so everyone can choose their separate preferences. There are a variety of soups to choose from, and one of my faves is the tomato and oxtail soup!
Beef and pork belly slices are my go to as they are always perfect for hotpot! Their meatballs and pastes are really good too! They have a wide range of condiments to choose from as well!
This place might be quite pricey though!
Had a very enjoyable dinner here with my family. Been here couple of times and always had good experience.
My favourite soup base is mushroom soup. The food quality is over the top. Foods are a little bit pricey but you really get what you paid for. No complaints at all. Love it 😍
Hot Pot is always a great idea for family get togethers and large groups because it's so simple and everyone gets their own individual pots here! I find the quality of meat here is always top notch, my favourite item to order is the meatball combo! I also love having the best of both worlds so I normally order double flavour soup- Abalone & chicken+ spicy soup! It's super flavourful! It can get quite expensive, so bring friends!
Tip: Wear an apron!
The food is fresh, I guess this hotpot is good for people not from Sichuan who can’t really eat very spicy stuff, overall it’s good, just a little bit overpriced
Points for: quality ingredients, service
Dainty Sichuan has been popular for years, despite a multitude of competitors.
Service is a noticeable difference, with proper attentive and cleanliness you may not get at a cheap eats.
Cost does play a factor too, because all up, you can probably spend quite a bit if you’re not careful.
I like the individual pots and selection of soups – I usually stick to a basic broth, as it gets flavoured during the meal.
The shaved lamb and beef are good quality and well presented, and the veggies are fresh.
The sauce station (which is an additional charge per person) has a load of sauces and condiments available for you to concoct your own dipping sauce.
Great for a hot pot session, but expect to pay $30+ per person.
Tasty and lovely presentation of food. Spent around $145 for two, however it was worth it as the food quality was really good. Wide variety of sauces to choose from. Love the ambience of the place. Perfect for a cold day! Would highly recommend.
Amazing! My favorite hot pot in Melbourne! Individual pot is very clean, and I ordered spicy soup+abalone soup, there is actually an abalone inside with many diced black chicken! This hot pot is so worthy! I think the must-order dish is wagyu, sooooo tender after a few seconds in hot pot. You wouldn't be disappointed!
Another great hot pot spot on the list! Book ahead for this one as there’s usually a crowd of people waiting to get in. Dainty Sichuan offers a large ala carte menu full of fresh ingredients. Portion sizes are decent so i recommend coming in a group to get more variety. It is a little on the pricey side for hot pot but it’s worth it. Super fresh seafood and a large variety to choose from. They also have a great selection of sauces.

To me, this place is probably the best hot pot place in town!
I love their variety of sauces. The food quality and presentation was top notch. Their Sichuan soup base was amazingly spicy but addictive.
Customer service is friendly and helpful too.
All in all, Dainty Sichuan is definitely a top notch experience for China Hot Pot lovers even though there are already so many in Melbourne.
Winter is here now so we will be back again very soon for sure!
Craziest hot pot experience I’ve ever been.
This place like heaven of sauces. While most places only provide the usual sesame peanut sauce. This place have more than 10 different sauces. Pork, Mushroom, Beef, etc. They even have the fermented bean sauce (not my favourite but they have it!)
My favourite sauce would be the Pork mixed with Mushroom.
They also have different kinds of soup. I love the ox tail one. Definately order the marble beef and their meatball selections are all good. Potato noodle also another must have as well.
Be prepared to not over order. Their portions are quite big.
I was hoping they provide some simple desserts/drinks on their sauces area but sadly, nothing but sauces. Maybe some day!
Overall, This place is as good as the places in China, yet with more sauce selections!
#hotpot is the best. Half and half pot literally can taste everything. Cheese prawn balls are surprisingly good. Lovely staff and beverages are nice.
A solid 4 stars if not 4.5. Unlike a lot hot pot places, everyone get to choose your own hot pot base in a small pot, so you don't need to compromise if you would like to try something different from what your dinner party do. Plenty of dipping sauce to choose from and mix with, just use your imagination and challenge your taste buds. Good size portions and reasonably priced. The service was welcoming and this place is spacious, so you don't feel cramp.

Dainty Sichuan is one of the few hotpot restaurants which offer individual pots, which i love. The meat and vegetables are always fresh. Some of my favourites are the dumplings, handpulled noodles and lamb. The service can get a bit slow during busy hours, but otherwise very good. Seating is comfortable and perfect for little or big groups.
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I finally got to try this place when the weather was a bit cooler. It’s usually packed on a Friday night so make sure you make a reservation if you have a big group.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: a great selection of veggies, meat and fish balls. I loved that you can have two flavours of the soup in your own pot. We over ordered but everything we tried was delicious. There’s also a sauce station where there is a good selection of dipping condiments.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: I didn’t enjoy that they made me sit at the top and told me that people had reserved the seats earlier when clearly the next couple who came in was randomly placed next to us. It is definitely on the more pricier side but the freshness of the produce is worth paying the extra premium.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place for hotpot and I would come back when I feel like splurging again.
This place is great! The service is attentive and I have never seen so much variety of sauces. The quality of the food was decent and the presentation was neat. It was my first time trying the Sichuan soup base and it was shockingly spicy. I have never experienced such spiciness and I will never get this soup again. It is too spicy to the extent where I can’t enjoy the soup, instead I am huffing and scoffing down heaps of water. All in all, it was a good experience.

This place is where you go to learn how to hot pot. You conveniently get your own pot for those worried about sharing or the soup beong too spicy/ not spicy enough. Then you can make your own sauce out of a nice selection of ingredients in a do it yourself section. Then order all of your favourite things to be able to dip in and eat at your own pace. The price is a bit high but afar fromhaving a hotpot at home with family this is the next best thing
I'm not usually a big fan of overly spicy hot pot but Dainty Sichuan has changed my mind. They have a huge selection of meats, vegetables and sauces to choose from. They are served beautifully so your eyes get fed as well as your tummy.
It is a bit pricey but at this place, you get what you pay for.

I like this hot pot place because you get your own hot pot with your choice of soup broth. Service is meh but the quality of their food is generally really good.
Came to this place on one Friday after work dinner with some friends during winter time. Foods are fresh and tasty with many soup broth, meat, seafoods and veggies options. Its pricey resto and they only gives us 2 hours seating space. Many sauces available with extra $2.
big by place, by location and big by heart, so before really enjoying the meal, suggest have deep pockets so that you can enjoy the meal and some wine. An average of 125$ per person yes you read it right.
the ambiance is pretty, and you can feel a sense of fine dine and snobbish approach, but that's ok... only serves indoors..
so we called for like the whole galore of food like a harry potter movie,
please select 2 chillies instead of 3 as its really hot unless you are accustomed to really hot food.
so you get to choose the gravy and then all that is served on the table shall be raw..
so cook by your self in the existing gravy and they shall keep pouring the stock.
we were team of 5 and we called from
1) Beef
2) Fish
3) Veggies
4) Tofu
5) Shell fish
6) Lamb
The marination on the fish is simply mind blowing spicy and tasty at the same time.. surely a finger licking food.
i am not a beef eater so i have avoided that meat. however rest was luscious finger licking and lip licking good..
seriously recommended but if you wish to enjoy keep that pocket deep...
Cheers!!!
Very nice place for hot pot. So many soup bases you can chose, that is the part I like the most about this restaurant. And it come with small pot.
For a more flashy and opulent hotpot experience, look not further than Dainty Sichuan - Chongqing Hotpot on Lonsdale Street. The decor and layout offer a spacious area with some very big tables, and of course, individual hotpots for each guest. The sauce buffet, increasingly popular in Melbourne, is also there, with a wide array of options. The hotpot ingredients here are probably the freshest and best quality that’ve had in Melbourne. But, you do pay a hefty price here too. Good for if you do hotpot a few times a year only perhaps.
Conveniently situated and with plenty of spaces for our group of 7. This branch differs with the other branches as their focus is hot pot. The clean and brightly lit interior boast a refined atmosphere which is further complimented by their aesthetically decorated food.
There are a nice variety of soups and edibles for your hot pot however they come with a hefty price tag. The soups was flavourful and ingredients are fresh. Our dinner was quite enjoyable if not for the strict time limit as we need to make our way out for the next group.
If you haven’t had Chinese style hot pot before this is a great place to visit.. I ordered the tomato ox tail + spicy soup.. both of the soups taste good but spicy soup is on the more intense side of spicy i wouldn’t recommend that you order this if you can’t take spicy food..
The ingredients that were served were fresh, no complaints there..
There is also a buffet of different condiments that come along with the meal..
This place is pretty pricey though and not suitable for small groups, we had 10 people and spent about $50 per person..

The quality of the food feels considerably better than the average chinese restaurant. The hotpot is quite good if you like spicy food. There are heaps of sauces to choose from. It was a little daunting for us though. Overall, it was good but way too overpriced.
Long line waiting. Definitely worth the wait for those who really love hot pots. Suitable for a large group of people. Very attentive staff. Menu was huge. Everyone get their own little pot!
Great service and great food! Staff were really attentive and were friendly. Food was served quickly and fresh, although the spicy soup was a BIT too spicy for me ahhhh! But otherwise a great experience 👏
Dainty makes me feel like I’ve teleported to China. It has an opulent fit out (and is masssssive) but the service is always so rushed. The menu is very expensive and the portion sizes for everything but the meat is ample. You get what you pay for.
I really like the presentation of the meat bowls and that the actual hot pot is individualised (more hygienic). Would only come back in bigger groups. They also do BYO 👍🏼👍🏼
Been there for the first time in a cold winter day, such a good idea to get warm. The food quality is good and has a lot of variety for hot pot. The meat quite thick slices. Definitely will come back again when am in melbourne.
This is a great place to go with friends in this cold weather especially if you love spicy food. I’m not a big fun of spicy but my friends love it! The price is a bit higher than the other hot pot place but it worth to try!
Great place to go if you want a bit of spice. The hot pots are a great idea and a real talking point. Beware the Sichuan stock if you can’t handle heat though! The waiting staff feel a bit rushed, but overall not bad.
Crowded. Hot pot. Perfect for winter. DIY sauce. Meat and seafood overload. Casual. Affordable. Yummy broth. Authentic. Spacious. Asian food.
Love Dainty Sichuan, the whole brand is absolutely amazing including this Hot pot place! It is always busy on cold nights so be prepared and don't get offended they have a time set for your seating, it is perfectly understandable.
They use small pots which is my favourite. I don't normally eat super spicy food so its good that my friend and I can still have what we enjoy. Food options are a good variety! Vego, meat, seafood and all very fresh. Thats probably why its really expensive. The bill can easily go over $200 for 4 ppl. Service is brief but lovely. Will definitely come back!
Went there for my birthday dinner. Spacious place, nice staff. Great selection of dipping sauces!!! That’s a huge plus. The food was nice and spicy (so watch out!). The price was all right. There was a time limit for each table, but they were friendly enough to give us an extra twenty minute before politely reminding us that time was up.
Great food. Nice and clean restaurant. The staff were great and the customer service was excellent and professional.
We had 4 x adults and 1 x toddler and space for a high chair. The staff were accommodating.
been here twice now, both experiences were good. the place is so big very nice interior. easy to order and very wide range of foods. hot pot easy to regulate and use. sauce station is very good, being able to mix our own sauces is great. food in general is delicious, meats are v nice with custom sauce. nice environment and staff. decent price too
Great place to hang out with friends and families if u love hotpot. Menu options is huge and everyone got their own broth so u can pick ur favourites. In love with the fountain of sauces so many choices however i think charging $3per head for sauces is a bit much that the only negative thing . Would i come back ? Hell YES
This restaurant situated the heart of Melbourne CBD which is easy to find . I am their loyal customer because their food never disappointed me . However this is not everyday food because their prices are not cheap , but I get what I pay so no complains.
Hot pot heaven! Be sure to visit the island of condiments. The spicy broth was my favourite and I also loved the mushroom broth. Great for dinner with a group of friends!
Food: Lots of choices of food, l like the self-serve sauce bar, I can mix the flavour I like for dipping. One pot per person is a nice idea too, everyone can pick the broth they like. There are couple super spicy dishes me and my partner couldn't handle at all, one is spicy fish and the other is beef. The waitress/waiter will 'pre-warn' you when you order.
This restaurant serves hot pot only, no other dishes. My friend wanted to order a single dish which she had in another branch, and the waiter said this branch serves hot pot only.
Atmosphere: Super busy! It's a good place to go with friends/family.
Wish there were more time for eating as there is a time limit for every table, this place is really busy.
Nice hot pot. Super enjoying to create my own sauce by choosing variety ingredients. The price still quite high for person who want to try more dishes from the menu
This is one of the finer takes on a rather simple hot pot meal. It has a selection of exotic soups with the freshest ingredients to choose from. All the dishes are extremely well plated. This is something you don't see in a typical hot pot restaurants and this also explains its premium pricing on the dishes. Most interesting part of this place is its sauce island. Literally it is an island centred in the restaurant that allows you to pick and mix many different types of sauces and condiments. (Note they charge extra to get the sauces).
With limitless combination of sauces, exotic soup-bases and the fine hot-pot ingredients, this place is definitely recommended for a premium hot-pot session.
Great hotpot dining experience in Melbourne. Each one of us was given our own induction cooker and was able to choose our own broth. It took us a solid 10 minutes just to scan their menu book. They have a wide range of meat and vegetables to choose from. Also, the staff kept on insisting for us to get a pitcher of their orange juice which they pride as all natural and contains 18 oranges with no additives or water, so we got one. We enjoyed the food and experience. The food was great, nice decors, service was fast but the staff was not personable and they are a bit pricey considering we have to convert from NZD to AUD. When we paid, we just laughed at how much that orange juice cost, I faintly remember it was around AUD $30++. We were such in a feast mode that we even ordered a pitcher of watermelon which costs almost the same as the orange juice! Lesson learnt if the price is not stated in the menu, better ask first to avoid surprises.
Actually pretty darn good here. Only really come for their hot pots as they do them very well. Over a dozen stock bases and individual pots is a nice touch (not uncommon overseas) Seriously lots of options to choose from including sauces (which they don't charge extra for, unlike their other branches) Lol even live seafood for the ones that are willing to part with their dough.
Classy interior, good chairs and clean overall. Its really ticks a lot of boxes including being quite fast and efficient service. Ok the negatives... the staff are rude especially the manager and front counter staff... oh my they are shockingly rude un-provokingly so and the prices although not crazy are fairly high for hot pot places. Being about $65/person with a basic drink. Also last orders at 945pm which they will continually remind you. Worth a try, just be prepared to be offended from time to time. Would get a 4.5 if it wasn't for the staff.
One of the best hotpot restaurants in Melbourne. Like the spicy hotpot with beef and lamb. Always busy with long queue and need to wait for couple mins before eating.
A bit furious seeing people who have no idea what good Chinese hotpot is supposed to be rating randomly... Without any doubt it is commonly considered by "Chinese Chinese" (i.e. people grow up in China and come to Australia later) the best Chinese hotpot in Melbourne. I mean, if people prefer fusion style or other style of hotpot, sure, that's not a problem at all, but that's just this style not being your thing.
Indeed the price is on a high end, but personally I think it's worth it. So far I only went there when I welcomed my Chinese friends from other states, or from China, or intended to introduce my non-Chinese friends to Chinese hotpot. Everyone I took there LOVED it. One of my friend who just landed in Australia for two days at that time for study showed off photos of the food on her Chinese social media as response to her friends who told her she won't get good Chinese food here and will be miserable.
Also the format of hotpot itself indeed makes hotpot more suitable for a relatively larger group of people, in order to enjoy a wider range of variety without waste. Though I do have history enjoying hotpot by myself when I was really hungry. But the point is, if someone ordered too much, that's not the restaurant's fault... I mean it's nice of you to put a reminder for other viewers, but is it fair to give a low score for that reason?
Personally I always show my respect to other culture or cuisine by learning what it is and how to appreciate it before I judge. I'd always ask a friend native to a cuisine or very familiar with the cuisine to introduce me. After learning what it is about and what is good what is bad, I then decide if it is for me. But not everyone does due diligent apparently.
Do… Expect to wait 30 minutes or more at weekends.
Don't … Just want hotpots? Try the cold dishes and barbecue.
Dishes to try … Abalone and super spicy hotpot combo.
Vibe … Upbeat fun of DIY dining
I love this place very much who doesn't there so much to try. Perfect to keep warm in winter.
Can't wait to come back! 😋🐟🍤🍡
This Dainty Sichuan restaurant is different to the table service type in South Yarra, it’s a hotpot dining experience. Each person gets their own individual induction cooker and pot of soup (with a broth of your choosing), then the whole table chooses a range of dishes to share for everyone to cook in their own pot.
I like how there's an option of two soup broths and how everyone gets their own. Also making your own dipping sauce is a great idea. The proportion of the food is huge. I went with a few friends and didn't think we ordered that much but when the food came out we were surprised.
Waited outside for a hour for a table as they didn't allow us to book a table. After getting in they said we could only have the table for an hour as they would have to free it up for the next table. The food was good and fresh and the soup bases were delicious and full of flavour. Have to say it is more expensive than other hot pot places but for the quality I would come back.
Probably the busiest hotpot joint you'll ever encounter in your life! Hence the 90 minute limit per table, and they are not coy about booting you off when time is nearly up. You pick individual soup bases, I always go for the plain and make dipping sauces at the station in the middle of the restaurant. I like having some spring onion chilli oil and a coriander white bean curd sesame one. We tend to order pork, beef, fish slices, fish paste (which you scoop and make your own fish balls) and mixed mushrooms. I agree with other reviews that it'll be difficult to have a variety if there's less than 4 of you as portions are generous. Presentation is beautiful and everything tastes very fresh!
Hot pot in winter evening is just perfect at all levels. We have been here a few times, and decided that going with their Stock soup is the best option. Depending upon the size of your group, you may want to order 2 meats and 2 vegies for two people at the least. Don't go for their condiments, they charge like $3/person, without these your soup already tastes nice.
Good food and ambience for bringing a lot of people, the waitress are not as pushy as other reviews I read on the web. Gave 4.0 because it's a bit expensive
Great selection of dipping sauces and ingredients. Don't be too shocked with the prices - the portion sizes of the ingredients were bigger than expected and the marinated meats were quite pleasant. Probably one of the best hotpot places around because of good hygiene, prompt service and variety. The only downside is the time limit (90 minutes) and lack of personal space (if given the option, sit on the 'low' tables. They tend to cramp 8-10 people on the high tables and it can be a struggle to fit everything. Plus you're basically eavesdropping involuntarily on everyone else around you). I went on a Saturday night at peak hour and was seated immediately - turnover is quick and you probably won't be waiting around too long. FYI, they do not take bookings for less than 8 people!
The food is very appetising and it was really delicious !! Although, the downsides were that there was a time limit so we actually had to rush, second of all the employees were quite rude and ignored me a few times when i asked for help but besides that, it was tasty xo
The best hot pot experience in Melbourne. Come early to avoid queues. The decor is nice and staff friendly. Soup base here is awesome, very spicy and complex unlike the same joint in Box Hill. The food came in very fresh include in the meat and vegetables. 360 of sauces to choose from. Can be pricey depending on what you pick. Will return again.
It's okay. I think it's busy due to the novelty of having a condiments bar and individual soup pots.
I don't feel like there's value for money at all - it's quite expensive compared to standard hot pot places and doesn't really offer much more.
The plus side is that there is soooo much variety in what can be ordered which you don't find at most places. Even the soup base list is extensive.
Overall, come here for the experience... The decor is a bit more fancy than your average hot pot restaurant but be prepared to pay the price for that.
Love it ! Except if they had more variety of fish balls with fillings it'd be perfect. There aren't enough dishes to eat with hotpot.
Spicy cold noodles is a must try! My favourite!!!! With a black asahi too of course!
Individual hotpot is a great idea as you get to control your own soup and flavours. But you lose the fun of stealing other people's cooked food in the soup. The condiment buffet is excellent. Strange they add a mandatory $3 charge for it, why isn't it just built into the cost of the hot pot price? Even with conservative ordering will set you back at least $35 per head.
I wanted to try hotpot for the first time so we came here. It’s a massive place with very efficient and quick service and the menu was one that you write your choices on and they will come and collect it. We ordered a mixture of meats and vegetables and opted for the non spicy base. Was really yummy and I liked the options on the dipping station for all kinds of dips to use.
Classic Hot Pot Venue for Big Groups. Been here a range of times over the last 8yrs- they have spicy and non-spicy. Large space to accommodate larger groups with individual hot pots. We were greeted at the door and served promptly. All individual dishes were fresh.
High quality soup and ingredients (fried tofu was a bit too chewy instead of crispy, but everything else was lovely). The place is a tad expensive though (~$110 for two). Each diner gets their own pot of soup, so you lose on the communal sharing experience. I'd come back in small parties, but with groups larger than four I'd go elsewhere for my hot pot.
A great dine-in place. Rich experienced when having hotspot during the occasion.
Food was yummy, especially the base of soups—a variety of selections to choose from.
Quite a good place for a group of people to have meals here, tastes like yummy 😋
A hot pot must try, Dainty Sichuan is top of my list when it comes to a hot pot experience. I loved having my own hot pot and being able to choose the broth I wanted for myself. The menu here is really good, offering many variety of good quality ingredients.
The sauce and condiments bar had a good and large range of toppings. My friends and I ordered different meats, seafood, noodles and veggies and everything was really tasty and fresh.
Thanks for the invite, I will be sure to recommend as this was a really great restaurant to visit.
Very spicey! Dont go flapping round like you own the place thinking you can handle any spiceyness as you will be in for a shock!
Great place for caters for 2 people to even large groups. Staff were friendly food was delicious. We are alot. Spent $55 per person group of 10 of us. But well worth it.
Great choices even for those who can't do chilli. Lol
Would come here again.
