Review Shinbashi Yakiniku - Melbourne

SitiSofia Edition
Loved the atmosphere! There’s two options while din in which is on the table with chair and the other one you had to take off your shoes. Price is $$$. The premium wagyu was 10/10 for as it melt on your mouth. Just pre book before hand so you wont get disappointed if there’s no table during your arrival.

If you are buffet lover you might feel that “All you can eat” is not worth the price ($60 per person) But, there are several things I like here; 1. Customer Service, I was only reading the menu and thinking what to order, the staff came to our table without calling and assisted us to order. They are really really attentive to their customers. 2. Variety choices of menu, even though it’s not as much as some place I have been, but it’s enough to order and customer don’t waste times searching what to order. Besides easy to read and I like when they have photos on the menu. 3. Locations and ambiance is excellent, nothing to comment. However, I have some feeling that wagyu from all you can eat is not the same grade with the a la carte menu. (Compared with menu photos only, and not an advice , only my feelings) Sashimi set is fresh, but the fish is very small and you can’t change anything in the set, it have to be served like that. The reason I gave 4 stars is that the overall experience is excellent but lack of enough wow factor (at this price). My recommendation is that providing a choice of drinks and a choice of desserts per person should be included in the menu (limit one per customer). I believe It’s not only make customers feel wow but the restaurant will be benefit somehow( I would be better not to say). Lastly I might not go back too soon but will definitely go back to try the a la carte menus later in the not near future.

I went to this restaurant on my husband's birthday. It was the first time for both of us. Clean shop, good service and very good staff members.

This was my first BBQ experience and I really enjoyed it! The service was friendly and attentive, wait times weren’t long at all (keep in mind we’d booked a table), ingredients were of good quality and prices were pretty good for the value! We definitely could’ve ordered more because their menu is huge but we were happy with most things. Only criticism I’ll make is that the rice tasted ‘old’ - not fluffy or soft at all which was a shame. The small sashimi plate was tiny too, making us wish we’d ordered the large. However, overall it was great and I’d definitely come back!

We had the AYCE BBQ, overall was OK. The sashimi was tiny for each serve and they butchered the slices so much into tiny bits it wasn't really a good way to enjoy it. The meat selection was good but again, but too thinly and small slices. A lot of side dishes seemed to be your pre-made freezer pack food like croquet and takoyaki re-heated. Edamame was just covered in pepper, first time in my life I didn't finish edamame.

A must try! High quality and a good variety of beef cuts. Friendly staff and quick service. Beautiful ambience to the place.

The cuts and variety of beef were excellent at Shinbashi. The wagu was well marbled and melted in your mouth. The place has a great ambiance and the staff were very hospitable.
Blu Rey
Excellent service, friendly and accomodating staff. Open this covid, as others are close or fully booked. Cozy ambience. Mellow music. Reasonable price. Good taste. Staff also explains the dish which is good.

Amazing location. The atmosphere was so pleasant. We had the Wagyu short rib with combination veg. And it was amazing!!! Such a wonderful experience!!!

Yakiniku meaning ‘grilled meat’ is exactly that at Shinbashi Yakiniku. It’s a place for you to sit and BBQ your meats. I felt that it was more of an Asian menu rather than solely an authentic Japanese menu, as it combined Korean, Chinese and Japanese influences. We can here for their $60 all you can eat buffet which has a time limit of 1.5 hours. My friend told me that they used to have it on the weekends, but now its been changed to only Monday to Wednesday. Booking is a must and this can be done via their own website.

🔆LOCATION🔆

Shinbashi Yakiniku is situated on the main hub of Lygon Street between Grattan and Faraday Street. I didn’t even know there was a Japanese restaurant in the heart of the Italian precinct.
The restaurant is very spacious with a mix of table seating and also tatami style seating where you have to take off your shoes and climb over into a little nook area to sit.

🔆SERVICE🔆

Staff seems to be all over the place and rushing quite a bit to collect orders from the kitchen to delivery to customers. At times it was a little difficult to flag someone down to get some service i.e. top up our tea with hot water, place another round of orders, or chase up items we had received yet.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆

All you can eat $60.00 per person
Time limit: 1.5 hours
Children (4-12 years), $19.00

The all you can eat menu includes the following options:
RICE/NOODLES: Steamed rice, curry rice, salmon porridge, seaweed porridge, bimbimbap, nabeyaki Udon

ENTREE/SIDES: beef potato gravy, kimchi, edamame, wakame salad, tako salad, Takoyaki, chicken karaage, croquet, lotus chips

SEAFOOD: fish fillet, prawn, squid, sashimi set (Scallops, salmon, tuna, ebi, ika, hokki-go

SALAD: Japanese salad, tofu salad

VEGETABLES: onion, sweet corn, pumpkin, capsicum, button mushroom, lettuce, butter sweet corn, butter garlic, butter cheese sweet potato, butter enoki mushroom

BEEF: marbled beef, tenderloin, waygu harami, wagyu rib finger, wagyu beef, premium ox tongue
PORK: pork belly, pork loin ((choice of shallot & salt, sesame, miso)
CHICKEN: chicken cartilage, chicken thigh, chicken breast (choice of shallot & salt, sesame, miso), chicken heartLAMB: lamb intercostal

🔆VERDICT🔆

Their BBQ pit is extremely slow to heat up. They should have had already heated charcoal ready to be placed rather than putting in cold charcoal. Or they should really consider in getting different type of charcoal that heats up faster. All our meats that we ordered were frozen, so it took even longer to heat through, melt the ice and soak up the liquid. At times the thinner slices of meat overcooked easily because it was frozen yet was cooking at same time. I prefer to have fresh meat to BBQ. I particularly like the meat that is marinated, it tastes much better.

Lucky however we had order other dishes that doesn’t require any cooking. We particularly enjoyed the Sashimi set which includes scallops, salmon, tuna, ebi (prawn), ika (squid), hokkigai (clams). In the end after order a few rounds of the sashimi set, we asked to only have salmon sashimi as we prefer that and didn’t want to waste in not eating the other raw seafood meat. The salmon porridge was a disappointment. It was literally cooked rice in miso soup with heaps of bonito flakes, toasted sesame and Japanese seasoning and a cooked piece of salmon on top. Don’t bother with the tofu salad, as it was literally a few pieces of cold tofu with mixed green salad with light soy sauce. It was so plain and boring. I felt a lot of the food was very average.

I suppose if you came in a big group you would get more value for money in ordering more variety of food compared with only 2 people.

I haven't been to a Shinbashi Yakiniku since September 2018 so I was really excited to taste test their special Valentines Day menu. The night started with some Japanese Sake upstairs at this restaurant and this restaurant takes sake to a whole new level. They have premium sake tasting, with 2 bottles of Sale only available at this restaurant in Australia. I like sake and they was a premium product. We also tried some sake cocktails such as matcha, which was soo yummy hahaha! And a range of other sake based cocktails, one with lychee which was great and another cocktail w boba balls similar to a bubble tea, which was delicious. One my my favourite sake drinks was the Sake Shiroi Litchi which was like drinking lychee milk. I could have drank this all night lol. Then we headed downstairs to try the Valentines Day menu. We started w some light Japanese salad and some edamame both of which were a great start. The assorted sashimi was magical, the fish so fresh it was almost jumping off the plate lol. The was soo good. Then the meat came out to grill, and this was very special. We started w Kagoshima A5 Blade, which just melted in my mouth when I ate it. And then we had the Australian Wagyu Deluxe Trio of Wagyu Short Rib, Wagyu Oyster Blade Premium, and Wagyu Marbled Beef. This was exceptional quality Wagyu Beef and the flavours of the meat and the juiciness, well it was really at another level. It was just perfect. Then we tried the pork belly and the pork jowl, both of which were superb. The quality of the meat was fantastic with all the pork juicy and tender. The Japanese scallops were light, bursting with flavour and a more delicate flavour to other scallops I've tried which I really enjoyed. Yummo! The jumbo ocean prawns were man size haha, and probably some of the biggest prawns I've seen. The meat was soo soft and it tasted like it was just plucked from the ocean, and just delicious. We had some boiled rice which was good and to finish we had some Japanese desserts of matcha cake and black sesame ice cream. Overall this was a memorable experience and probably one of my highlights for some time. I tried a matcha beer again which is amazing, it's almost like a matcha latte, but much more enjoyable haha! If you are looking for a special occasion to spoil someone on Valentines Day, to try this special menu, then this restaurant is definitely worth a visit. You can also have a pre dinner sake based drink, in a seperate bar upstairs at this restaurant too. My partner and I were extremely grateful for the opportunity to visit as an invitation, and I am honoured to be able to recommend this place as a perfect restaurant to visit on Valentines Day, or any day really lol.
JunGoesToEat
Had quite high expectations coming in with the high rating of the restaurant.
We opted for the $60 BBQ buffet option which is only available Mon-wed.

Service was good, the staff regularly checked on our table and asked if we wanted anything else. Food arrived relatively promptly (although towards the end of the night, not all our food arrived and the kitchen closed).

However the quality of the meat, especially the beef was dissapointing unfortunately. For wagyu, some cuts were frozen. In addition to the grills which were simply not hot enough despite being charcoal, the beef just turned out tough and unrepresentative of what good wagyu should be.
The "premium" ox tongue. The serving portions were small and even shrunk up even more after cooking it.
The sides we ordered included karaage, takoyaki, croquettes and lotus chips. Was all not fresh obviously because it was cold.

I understand that because its a buffet, the quality of the meat will not be as premium. Furthermore I have not tried another Yakiniku buffet which serves wagyu beef in Melbourne, so this is a comparison to the ones I have had in Japan.

However for $60 the overall experience was unjustifiable, the quality of meat wasn't the freshest, the grills need to be much much hotter.

2.5/10. Service was good and prompt, unfortunately won't be back unless grills get changed.

been there for dinner and booked the table through zomato and they said they didn't use zomato for table booking anymore. They sent us upstair to wait at the bar but there was only one big table and it was full. The space is quite small so standing there was a bit uncomfortable. Luckily, we got table for our meal few mins later.

For the food, the beef are good but still a bit frozen when they serve on the table. But the size are good with a reasonable price.

Except for the beef, I ordered a small sashimi plate and it was so disappointing. The cut of the salmon were really really thin and small. I rather go to sushi hub to get the sashimi box than this.
Overall I think the staff were friendly, the place is nice and clean, the price is good. But I expect more for such a high rating restaurant.

We love a good Japanese bbq and Shinbashi Yakiniku delivered the goods!
They serve great quality meat and the service matched. The marbled beef and wagyu harami were so good, we had too many serves!
Can’t wait to go back and try their seafood and all you can eat offer!
Amy
The quality of the meat was great, especially the seafood, you could tell it was fresh. My favourite was the beef short ribs - super delish! The side dishes were great too - endamame and the salad were both delicious.

Service is good.
Score on zoomato is a bit misleading.
I didn't read comments first, 4.6 is a high score, so i assume their food would be good. I order wagyu beef, a bit disappointed. Tastes average no surprise.
Waygu one has better beef, even the Korean bbq in QV has better beef
Parking is hard around this area even on Monday.

Booking through zoomato is also no longer available, my booking was denied when I arrived, but fortunately we don't need to wait

Price is nice, two ppl with drink, 120aud.
Kayne St
The food was not as good as the rating. Ordered the wagyu and it was frozen. The fire was not strong enough and made the quality even worse after the BBQ. Frozen wagyu!!! Not worth the price. Sashimi was good. The service was good. I dont think I will come back again tho

Delicious food. The service was great, so was the atmosphere. I liked the seating area and the booking online was super fast and easy

Located on Lygon Street is the beautiful and minimalist Japanese restaurant - it’s a great place for group bookings and I absolutely love the all you can eat offer they have Monday - Wednesday. We were seated in the private dining area with our own grills at each table. To start, we enjoyed some sashimi and other entrees such as edamame. Enjoyed drinking sake while grilling our own wagyu, pork belly, ox tongue. All so delicious and tender. Will definitely be back again - thanks for the great night and service.

Good value for your money, but the meat quality is not the best; however for the price you pay, I think it is a fair reflection. Got the wagyu set, didn’t feel like it was 360g, so my friend and I ended up getting more meat. Overall, i’d unlikely go for quality, but will go back if I’m craving bbq but short on budget.

This experience has to be one to remembered. From the moment you walk in you’re greeted with Japanese tradition and culture. It starts from the moment you remove your shoes, yes I said you take your shoes off. At first It was a no but as I realised it’s another way of embracing another’s culture I became more profound of the ideas. My family and myself all sat down for the $60pp all you can eat buffet which is set from dinner Mon-Wed. It is timed for 1 hour and 30 minutes, although it was plenty of time I reckon. It is set up to satisfy all your tastes and explorations you want to try throughout finding new dishes and experiences and boy were we satisfied. I wish I had taken more photos, but I was too busy trying to keep up with all the delicious cuts of “premium wagyu”, seafood, sashimi and other Japanese delicacies. all the different tastes and flavours blended well throughout the night whilst cleansing out my tastebuds with a couple glasses of well known Sake’ (alcohol). The atmosphere was a delight and the evening was wonderful. The staff were friendly and very humble in their interactions. Will be back, definitely.

A beautiful restaurant in Carlton specialising in high quality Japanese cuisine and BBQ. From the moment we walked in we were taken away on a culinary adventure.

We were seated in the private dining area where we took off our shoes and had slippers provided, adding to the experience. The service was exceptional and we were very well taken care of throughout the night.

Once seated, we were provided with a light broth made in-house to warm ourselves up from the cold weather. A very lovely start that also stimulated our appetites!

We then began with some edamame and kimchi to nibble on. The kimchi was quite different to your traditional one - it was quite sweet and refreshing, and not overpowering at all.

The sashimi platter was very fresh and there was plenty of variety. I loved the pretty plating too.

Moving on to the meats. First up was the pork belly and we were definitely off to a good start! The layering of fat and lean meat was perfect, and the crispy parts which were seared by fire were heavenly.

Then came the star of the show - the wagyu. We were spoiled with so many different cuts - from the Wagyu Deluxe Trio (marbled wagyu, wagyu short ribs, wagyu oyster blade), Wagyu Harami, and Premium Wagyu Ox Tongue. Every single cut was phenomenal, and the unique marblings provided a different experience in each bite.

After our wagyu feast, we filled up the rest of our stomach space with a hot piping bowl of nabeyaki udon, which was just what we needed on a cold winters night. The broth was flavourful yet clean and light, and the udon was plump and soaked up the flavours of the soup.

On top of all this, our feast was perfectly paired with some Dassai Sake - to complete the ultimate Japanese experience.

I would highly recommend visiting Shinbashi - it’s not one you want to miss!

Thank you so much for having me!
Goodfoodpapi
Shinbashi provided a great AYCE experience with all my bbq favourites. A huge variety of meats to choose from as well as great sides. The staff were super friendly and helpful also, would definitely recommend if you’re ever on Lygon st. Thanks team

We had all you can eat BBQ and it was soooooo good! The food was fresh and the service was fast and friendly.
Will definitely be back for more.
Eat Good Melbourne
Was feeling Korean bbq on a Friday night but with most joints booked out I opted for Japanese barbecue instead. The venue is super cute with tatami style seating (where you have to take off your shoes) and regular table seating. They offer a decent variety of meat options. I ordered the wagyu platter, large sashimi, udon, miso soup, takoyaki, bibimbap, ox tongue and jumbo prawns. The meat came out first which I thought was abit odd seeing as I expected the sashimi and other entrees to come out first. The meats were also very frozen. Our entrees also came out much later. I think I would’ve enjoyed the meal more if our entrees had of come out first, giving time for the meat to defrost. The best part of the meal was definitely the bibimbap. The prices are cheap so if you’re after a cheap Japanese barbecue option its worth a try.
Hello. Imnikki
Here at Shinbashi Yakiniku, I suggest you save space in your tummy, a lot of space, for the most amazing wagyu beef that you will encounter. When these beautiful cut of beef hit our table, we couldn't help but be in awe of the marbling. And it did not disappoint one bit. Melt in your mouth, tender and beautiful flavours. You get a choice of sauces to go with them, but really, it's unnecessary.

The ox tongue was just as impressive, causing my friend to exclaim "OMG" once he had a taste. It was thick enough to retain a slight firmness, yet thin enough for us to marvel at the buttery texture. I'm getting quite hungry thinking about it.

You wouldn't want to be missing out on their other dishes too, such as the sashimi platter and the ultimate comfort food - udon. Nothing fancy, just fresh and quality ingredients, and skillful execution.

Indulge yourself with Dassai Sake, and save yourself the airfare money needed to go to Japan. A must visit. Thank you for hosting us.

Had the best Japanese bbq experience here for dinner. The restaurant is spacious and clean with a nice touch of sophistication.
I tried their range of wagyu cuts and it was incredible. You know you're going to get premium wagyu by it's marbling and Shinbashi delivers on the goods. What I also really love about this place that it's a 100% charcoal bbq giving a delicious smokey flavour. The sashimi is here is also very fresh, generously cut and of top quality. Be sure the wash the meal down with one of their extensive range of sakes, I'd recommend the Dassai50 👌.
Overall this place was amazing and highly recommend this place 👍

Very nice experience, special way to serving the sake was quite fun, the BBQ and other dishes was nice, also the staff are very nice and friendly, gave us many suggestions, would definitely revisit again.

This place probably had the best customer service I have experienced. I loved how we had to take our shoes off and how they had slippers if we were to leave. It gave a nice home feel. The food itself was pricey but it was quite worth it. We got the set for 4 and they offered so much. I loved the salad and the takoyaki. The wagyu was also really good and I just loved how the staff were willing to help without us asking when they saw us struggling. A really nice place to go with family.
Blair He
It's a cozy place and not crowded at all. Everyone gets enough space it's what I like the most. Wagyu is ok but not the best quality. I don't like the pork, very hard to chew and no flavour at all. There is no scissor provided to cut the meat... I had no idea hot to eat such big pice of meat with only one bite... Seafood is not that fresh but ok. Butter Mushroom has no butter...
The Mandrill
The mandrill was thinking about his time in Ebisu and romanticising nihongo things, and in another cultural identity deluded himself that there would be authenticity nearby. He was wrong. Chinapenese once again. And pricey at that.
Quynh Le
I totally loved my experience at this place. Service was good and staffs were attentive. It is a higher end place for a bbq stop. Will come back to try their all you can eat menu.
Steven Gu
Shinbashi Yakiniku at Carlton. Located on the busy Italian street Lygon street with nice decorations as Japanese yakiniku restaurant. Highly recommended for the good waygu meat there. Also the draft beer is a must try as well.
Carisa Ong
service was decent, sake was great. meet was chewy, and definitely not worth the money. kimchi was too sweet. their edamame was seasoned amazingly though.
Jepps
Came on a Monday night for the all you can eat for $60pp. Staff were polite and friendly. The quality of meats were great, my favourite was the beef tenderloins and they were exactly that, so incredibly tender! Also had seafood, chicken and pork which I would say the chicken breast and pork loin were also favourites. Loved the sashimi too, good cuts with minimal fat (salmon) and really fresh.
Drinks including tea are additional price however there’s free chicken soup (which is more just a broth) overall a nice place to eat ps. Probably the best kimchi I have ever had too!! Unfortunately forgot to get photos of most things we had as we were too hungry but still managed to snap a full (even half plates, sorry)! :)
Melbourne, Let’s Eat
Pretty good Japanese bbq. Service was prompt and the waitress was so friendly and walked through the menu and recommendations. The quality of the meat was really good and would highly recommend the all you can eat to get the most out of this as we just went with a la cart and realised we wanted to order more.
Should defs check this place out!
Jox
Not outstanding if you are comparing it with yakiniku right out of Japan but it IS good if you don’t compare. I would come back!! Beef chicken and seafood were nice but ox tongue just ok even though we went premium .. needs to be more tender / sliced thinner. Too chewy. Overall a very enjoyable meal though - wagYu nicely marbled, cooked on a charcoal grill. The sauces provided to chase the bbq meats down were yummy.
Thi
Yum! Went for my partner’s birthday and they seated us on these wonderfully wide tables and served us some chicken broth from a kettle to start us off. The broth was so addictive, I think I eventually finished the kettle (which they left on our table). We ordered our meats and sashimi and everything came out so quickly. Lots of staff around on a Friday night so we were always quickly attended to. Cooking over coal gives meat this distinctive flavour, which my partner and I really love. I had a lemon highball (not pictured) and it really just complimented the meal in the best way. A bonus is my clothes didn’t smell like barbecue afterwards either! Will 110% recommend and return to.
Ionathegenie
This place has an extremely extensive list of sakes, shochus and Japanese beers at reasonable prices. The Yuzu sake is recommended for those who likes them refreshing with a hint of sweetness. At $6.50 a glass - nothing could really stop you from trying them.
The food- oh wow. They were all pretty good. Just wished they had something soupy in the menu.
*Highlights are the wagyu beef short ribs and prawns: must try!

Real rating 4.5 ⭐️

I was invited by a friend to join for dinner at Shinbashi Yakiniku and wow was it a great experience!

As you can see from the photos, we had several kinds of meats barbecued for us ranging from ox tongue to wagyu beef to tiger prawns!

My favorites for the evening were the ox tongue, pork belly, tiger prawns, and marbled wagyu beef! Each meat were barbecued perfectly and they were so tender, juicy and flavorsome! You could tell that a lot of hard work and effort was put to get to this quality!

I would definitely go back again for the barbecue as it was a memorable one!

Being to many all you can eat places with a time limit, I can confidently say one of the best experiences. Quality of the food was good, service was excellent. Our server Ms LOVELY, was true to her name and provided exceptionally lovely service.

Food came promptly, coal bbq was roaring and smiles all around.

All in all, I would be coming back often and definitely recommend a visit.

Here on Monday night, for $60pp bbq buffet and it was well worth it. I’d recommend wagyu ribs, out of 3 wagyu selections, it was very tender and juicy.
Best of all, the service and the quick run of orders, it was nothing like some of the complaints here at all, we got our order no longer than 5 minutes each time we placed them.
It’s a place to try when you want some ‘yakiniku style’ and unlimited beef on charcoal grill.
Eat X Wander
We recently visited Shinbashi, a Japanese BBQ restaurant on Lygon street serving up a plethora of Wagyu options amongst other items. We loved the traditional tables, great service (you can cook it yourself or get the pros to do it for you). They also have all you can eat on Mon-Wed 😲 so you can satisfy your Wagyu cravings if you choose! .
What we had 🍴
The deluxe Shinbashi Wagyu Box - 8 kinds of Wagyu so you have a chance to taste everything. They only do 3 serves of this a day so we were lucky to try it! Great options for people who are unsure of where to start! 😋

🥩 Our other favourite was the Wagyu deluxe trio which includes the oyster blade, short ribs and marbled beef. Super juicy, tasty and everything just melts in your mouth 😍

🍤 We also tried some tiger prawns and pork belly which were not bad but probably would go more for their Wagyu as that's what they specialize in. 🤗

🍜 We finished off with a lovely bowl of Nabeyaki Udon soup noodles which were delicious

This kind of Wagyu would be much more expensive in the city so if you're around the area, and feeling like Jap BBQ, defs give this a try 👍

I discovered this restaurant last week and tried their Shinbashi Uptimate Wagyu Box. Every bite of the beef worth the penny you spent. The service level was better than I expected and will DEFINITELY COME BACK again with my family. The servers were friendly and willing to help, namely Darren.
#best restaurant in MEL#
Some Bunee Loves Food
Went to Shinbashi Yakiniku with a bunch of people with a love of food at a foodies tasting event on Monday. It's a very hustle bustle family friendly place, where people are enjoying their time cooking their own food at the bbq.

The place offers an All-you-can-eat menu only available Monday to Wednesday, and they are open throughout the Easter holidays and ANZAC day if you need to get a Wagyu fix during this time.

We started off with a very nice Deluxe Shinbashi Wagyu Box 360g - which includes 8 kinds of Wagyu, and is limited to only 3 serves per evening so you'd have to be quick on this one! You can see the different cuts in the wooden box and it all just looks super appealing that you just want to throw them onto the bbq asap!

We also had the Wagyu Deluxe Trio 360g which includes the Wagyu Oyster Blade Premium, Wagyu Short Rib, and the Wagyu Marbled Beef. The meat was so tender, juicy and it tasted really nice with their house special spicy miso sauce!

Then came more Wagyu beef galore! The Premium Wagyu ox Tongue, Wagyu Harami and MB6+ Wagyu Sirloin was all sizzling on the bbq before we know it! I particularly love the Wagyu Harami - it was brushed lightly with a yuzu sauce and after it was cooked, it was soft and melted in mouth!

The pork belly was a bit chewy and wasn't really my favourite meat but the wagyu was really nice here.

The tiger prawns are actually my favourite! The staff did a really good job cooking the prawns as it was the hardest to cook and it was just very well seasoned and so so delicious! I loved it!

We finished off the meal with the Nabeyaki udon - the udon noodles were chewy and thick, the broth had a light flavour but the mushroom soaked in all the goodness from the broth and tasted great.

Overall, I really enjoyed my night dining at Shinbashi Yakiniku - friendly staff, quality meat, and great service - thank you! I'll be coming back with my family soon!

**4.5**

Shinbashi Yakiniku is located in busy ol Lygon Street. If you’re into Japanese bbq, this place is definitely a must. We came here on a weekend without a booking and were seated straight away. In saying so, this restaurant does get really busy. There are a couple of big tables where they have to halve the table with a little table blocker for different groups. There are also traditional seating tables where you have to take your shoes off.

We were seated and the first thing they gave us was chicken soup which warmed us up. The waitress also explained to us what the menu had to offer.

We decided to order off the al la carte menu. There is also an all you can eat option if you’re feeling extra hungry. There’s a big selection of meats you can choose from ranging from different prices. Also, there are a lot of side dishes as well. We ordered the wagyu marbled beef, wagyu oyster blade, wagyu sirloin MB6 and the chef’s special, Kagoshima A5 blade meat.

What I love about this place is the portion of meat. They give you a generous amount for quite a decent price. My favourite was the Kagoshima A5 blade. It was melt in your mouth and had such a beautiful marble to it. The wagyu oyster blade was delicious as well and so was the sirloin. I didn’t enjoy the wagyu marbles beef as much, it had less fat and was quite chewy. Each piece of meat had sesame marinated and I would have preferred it without the sesame seeds. However, in saying so, the quality of each meat was exceptional for the price and I enjoyed every bite! I also loved the way they presented the meat, especially in a shape of a cute rose!

Overall, I enjoyed my night here. The staff were extremely friendly and the food was delicious. I would definitely return and recommend!

From the moment you walk in you are greeted with beautiful smiles. The staff were really great here well trained and knowledgeable. A simple Japanese BBQ menu which covers just about all cuts of meat. So much care was taken in the precision and presentation of all the dishes just from the way it was all presented. The meat was definitely fresh and of high quality. Most of all the meat melted in your mouth. Overall a great experience and would definelty go back for all you can eat

We went on a Sunday evening, the restaurant wasn’t full but very noise. We ordered the Signature selection for 2, the food were fresh but small in portion, not enough for us so we had to order another two dishes. Dipping sauce for the Japanese or Korea bbq could be a highlight, but not at this restaurant at all. There was a flask on the table that we thought it’s just the hot water or tea, no staff has ever mentioned until the last minute when we left, we discovered the chicken soup inside, lol! For such price range and quality, there are many other options in city with better quality.

A5 waygu are as amazing as usual. Love the environment. Easy to book a table. All the staff are super nice. Highly recommended.
Would be perfect if the sake range can be more and higher level.

The food was amazing and of very high quality. Definitely good value for money with cuts of meat you don't find anywhere else in Melbourne. You can definitely see they take pride in the service they provide and should be commended for the overall experience!

Budget product for premium pricing

Pros:
- Floor staff tried very hard
- Wagyu and chicken thighs were quite tasty
- Great décor

Cons:
- Sashimi took over an hour and a number of follow ups before being served
- Orders mysteriously were not received by the kitchen

We were excited to try Shinbashi Yakiniku after reading rave reviews and articles on Concrete Playground and the like.

We thought that priced at $60 per person that this all you can eat restaurant would be run differently. How wrong we were. You might as well be fighting for oysters at the China Bar buffet. It took no less than 75 minutes and four 'reminders' before a paltry serving of sashimi was provided.

And if you think that they would be more generous with their other, cheaper menu items, you would be wrong as well. The kitchen became suspiciously slow with preparing our food after our first order.

We became locked in a battle of wills. On one side we were hungry, and frustrated by the lack of food served. On the other side, the owner's desire to serve food as if we were on rations.

Many tactics were used by the owner, none were successful. 'The order is not on our system', 'we are out of stock', 'the kitchen is closed' (despite our orders being made well before). These are all excuses that you should expect to hear if you dine at this fine establishment. I urge you to fight the temptation to give in. If you push hard enough, you may just get your order. And if you do, you might just get a side of dirty looks. That, friends, comes free of charge.

Was recently here for my birthday and we had the signature selection. Good amount of food, very satisfied with quality. Excellent attentive staff especially the lovely Teresa who immediately brought me iced water when she noticed that I burnt my tongue (bit too eager to eat but can you blame me?) Also try the Matcha beer if you can!

An absolutely amazing Japanese yakiniku spot in Carlton!

Their wagyu was legit - and really melted in your mouth! Can’t get over how tender their beef is. The ox tongue was so delicious too and the scallions that were a must!

They have an all you can eat wagyu buffet from Monday to Wednesday that I reckon is a must try! I’ll be checking that out next for sure.
Platecreative
If i could, I would have mouth watering wagyu beef every day of the week 🤤. Shinbashi is our go to for delicious high quality marbled beef, when we’re craving beef from our times in Japan! 😍🙌🏻

Been here twice for the all you can eat kbbq. I recommend bookings as it can get quite crowded. The menu had a large selection with plenty of options. Definitely worth the money however there is a little sacrifice for quantity over quality. Staff often don’t remember your order and you have to ask again because of the dinner rush, however an overall good experience and would recommend.

Shinbashi Melbourne is located in the main Lygon Street, Carlton area – it is easily found and in a relatively short distance walk from the nearest tram stop from Swanston St. Shinbashi offers wide range of proteins from wagyu, seafood, chicken and pork in Japanese BBQ style. They offer a semi tatami style seating with charcoal pit for a more Japanese ambience.

We were lucky to check out this place with a group of foodies!

What we ate....

We had a large selection of meats, which melted in your mouth. It is worth the premium the meats as they are AMAZING! They also not only have beef but chicken and pork which were equally as tasty. In addition to the meats we had large prawns which were fresh and when grilled, fragrant.

They not only serve top quality beef, but also have the best housemate dipping sauce! Its so good its addictive!

What we drank....

We ordered some yuzu sake and we loved that we got to pick our own sake glass. It was perfectly chilled in ice.

The vibes...

The atmosphere makes you feel like you are back in kyoto. This restaurant requires you to take off your shoes for the more traditional seating. (Don't worry they provide slippers if needed) It makes the restaurant more homey.

Cant wait to go back for the all you can eat menu from Mon-Wed nights!

The stooges plus Ms Pear decided it was was time to check out the new Japanese BBQ Shinbashi located in the heart of Lygon Street. We made a booking online, turned up and BAM got to our table and looked over the menu. We were there for lunch on a Sunday and there was only one floor staff looking after all the tables. Poor thing was running around like a headless chook BUT he was so friendly, polite and very attentive.
Dennis Wong
Can't imagine why it would got such a high score. Staffs are friendly and nice to be honest. But the quality of the meat is way below average which doesn't match its price tag.

The interior design of this place is cool, just wish the foods are nice too. We had the pork belly and the chicken thighs. They were ok, but we had way better quality at a lower price atJapanese bbq places elsewhere in Melbourne. The salad was plain, the dressing taste watered down. If I really want good authentic Japanese I will go elsewhere.
Andrew
Place looked nice and clean when walking pass so decided to give it a try. The menu seem more like a Japanese / Korean fusion.
Food here was average, nothing special compared to other places.
Service here was horrid, felt like the wait staff didn't want to be there. When the fried chicken dish was served, one of the chicken pieces was leaning on the waitress' finger and it was awkward when she was trying to push the chicken pieces back onto the dish without making a mess.
Don't think I'll be back.
Crabapples For Lunch
This is more of a 2.5 stars. We came here on a weekday lunch and ordered the signature selection set which cost $120. For that price, what we got was pretty poor value for money. Japanese or Korean BBQ is never a cheap meal option but you can definitely get more for your money elsewhere.

The meats that we got were frozen so it was practically impossible to separate the slices without tearing them apart. After trying for a while we showed the waitress the problem and she took a few minutes to carefully pry each piece loose so we could cook it. The taste of the meats were ok but portions were small and not really filling. For $60 per person I expect to at least be filled up well. The butter cheese sweet potato was on the BBQ the entire time and by the end of our meal it still looked nothing like what it showed in the photos - just grey chunks of potato with pale yellow cheese on top. There was a big portion of Japanese salad which was quite nice, so given the fact there wasn't much meat I filled up on that. But let's be honest, salads are just cut up raw vegetables (this one was pretty basic) with sesame dressing that tasted identical to a bottle I'd buy from the supermarket, so I can't really give them much props for that.

I can't honestly recommend this place. There are many BBQ places around Melbourne to get better value for money.
Chips Before Dips
I came here for dinner a little apprehensive after reading some mixed reviews, but was overall pleasantly surprised.
We booked in on a Wednesday night so that we could take advantage of the $60 ‘all you can eat’ offer.
And you can certainly get your moneys worth in that 1.5 hour seating, with the quick friendly service and meal turn around we received.
All the food was of a good standard, and you can order as much of anything as you want.
My favourites were the sashimi set, and the wagyu beef which only needed the quickest of cook time to be delicious.
Great introduction to Japanese BBQ.
Flying Forward
Experiencing Japanese Yakiniku BBQ (the act of grilling meat) should be second nature to Aussies for obvious reasons, but instead of standing in front of the Weber with a VB, you’re sitting down with a Kirin (or sake). Much more comfortable and refined.

Yes, there is all-you-can-eat on Mon-Wed ($60pp), but these are my chill out days, and, who feasts this early into the week anyway?
Plus there is a 90 minute limit, and also limitations on the variety of beef you can order.

So without going over equivalent $120 for 2 people, I’m ordering a-la-carte, choosing what I like from the full range:

• Premium Ox Tongue (15.90) – beautiful bouncy texture, with a soft chew to it. Wrap some of the onion and pepper salsa in the middle and it’s an absolutely delicious mouthful.
• Wagyu Marbled Beef (17.90) – my favourite cut. Each chew brought out even more juices, fat and flavour. Take your time to savour each bite.
• Wagyu Oyster Blade (15.90) – similar to the marbled beef with bags of flavour, but has more of a bite to it. Very succulent.
• Japanese Scallops (17.90) – very large, plump and fresh scallops.
• Pork Belly (14.90) – the excess fat has been trimmed off, and just as well, as this can cause huge flare ups. Tip – dip it in some of the bean sauce.
• Butter Sweet Corn (4.90)
• Kimchi (4.90)
• Lettuce (4.90)
• Rice (2.50)
• Total – 99.70. Pretty reasonable.

Red-hot charcoals are brought to the table, which is excellent because in my book, it’s the only way to grill meat. You really get the flavours imparted by the charcoal smoke.

Like all men on the BBQ, I’m my own expert so I cook one piece at a time, flash-grilling it for around 30-45 seconds per side, keeping it medium-rare. This means I have total control and can eat at my own pace.

To the side of the table, there are a variety of condiments to add to your sauce trays: spring onion, shichimi (mild spice mixture), soy sauce, fermented bean paste, and crack-salt. I call it crack-salt because there’s a few other ingredients in this mix that lifts the flavour of the beef and makes you go back for more ;)

A couple of my favourite ways to eat yakiniku is to simply dip the beef in the crack-salt and chase it with a bit of rice, or wrap it up with some kimchi and lettuce for a more Korean style.
It’s this way of eating which you would call a meal. You wouldn’t try to fill yourself up purely on meat alone, as you would with a hunk of steak.

The staff are very attentive and change the grill rack regularly, so it doesn’t it doesn’t get too smoky from any bits stuck on the grill.
What’s impressive is the strength and efficiency of the exhausts. I didn’t feel like I was dining in a smoking house and when I left, my t-shirt still smelt like fresh laundry. Bonus.

I finished off dinner with a lychee liquor called Shiroi Litchi. It’s milk-based with fresh lychee juice and has a slightly thick texture. Served straight up on the rocks, it is absolutely refreshing and delicious, it’s hard to pace yourself.

For full transparency, I dined as a guest of Shinbashi Yakiniku, however I really enjoyed the experience here and have no issues coming back or recommending the place to family and friends.

Visited this place on a random Friday night after work. They had 2 sitting times that night. Was supposed to come for all you can eat but found out it was not available on Friday night. So we ordered the set for 4 people. The ingredients were very fresh. The place is not too crowded. We didn’t smell like BBQ when we walk out this place. Will come back again.

I was here for the All-u-can-eat and was not impressed by the quality of food. Though $60 seems reasonable or even cheap at first for wagyu yakiniku in Melbourne, we soon found out the meat quality was really not up to our expectation. I have tried many wagyu yakiniku places in Melbourne and Japan and the meat here was nowhere near that tenderness you typically expect from wagyu.
As a chef myself, I was annoyed to see many cuts of meat were cut wrong and therefore were extremely tough. The poor looking sashimi plate was in the same condition with slices of fish cut terribly weird but let's just say I was overly picky, however, I think there are no excuses for the sliminess of the squid sashimi and the fishiness of some lukewarm slices of fish, definitely not in their best stage. Another huge issue was that the charcoal being not hot enough and extremely slow to cook on (I saw many other reviews mentioned this problem as well). I understand that using charcoal supposes to impart more smokiness to the meat yet the temperature was so low I could put my hand directly above the grill and just felt warm and the meat was therefore unable to get the nice char without being overcooked. It also significantly slowed down our eating speed, while we had a 90 min time limit. I rated 3 because I could see the staff really tried to provide good service (they did top up more coal when we asked for it, though there were some missed orders) and the food was not completely horrible (if you have not tried other places and just want a reasonably priced yakiniku meal). But don't come here expecting high-quality meat for that low price (though I think their a la carte menu is not that cheap, if I had paid the normal price, I would have been way more upset). Personally, I think more details should be paid on how the meat and sashimi should be cut, the temperature of the meat (I totally understand the need to freeze meat to cut and never expect my meat to be "fresh from the cow" but serving a plate of rock-hard frozen meat to put on a lukewarm grill can easily put people off), and most importantly a way to adjust the heat source. On a side note, we also found the side dishes were on the super sweet side, kimchi, seaweed salad, japanese salad were all unusually sweet, the marinade was also sweet as well as the dipping sauce and that also threw us off, but I guess if you have a sweet tooth that would be no problem.

I had the 90mins $60 buffet today with my gf. We think the potion size of the meat is definitly small, meat quality is just acceptable, seafood (fish & prawn) is just soso. Meat came out frozen, had to ask staff myself to change the burnt grill bar (because other places ive been staff changes without customer asking), when we started the charcoal is not even hot enough so it makes the meat cook really slow and while we have a time limit on the buffet deal. Is definitly i dont think that experience worth $120 for 2 people.
Overall in my opinion
Decor: 4/5
Service: 2/5
Food: 2/5

Usually i go to Yeonga kbbq and Wagyu One japanese bbq. Meat quality and service at decent good level. And cheaper than what you charged me. That was my first time experience and it wasnt a good one.
Michelle
Just an okay experience . The waygu here isn’t anything spectacular and their portions are definitely on the smaller side. Service is hit and miss.

I have been trying to visit Shinbashi for ages and tonight finally got to make an appearance. I am sticking my hands up now and admitting to having never experienced a Japanese Yakiniku bbq meal before, however I have had Korean BBQ and enjoy this fun and interactive way to dine.

Greeted on our arrival we sat down at a table with a pit that was soon to filled with coals. The menu was quite extensive and there was a generous selection of meats to got me highly enthused. I was
dining with a pescatarian so had to make some allowances.

We ordered Japanese beer to begin with and I enjoyed the crispy tasty hitachino nest beer white ale while my friend braved the matcha IPA which radiated green.

I couldn’t not order the wagyu deluxe trio for me along with the premium ox tongue which came with that flavoursome streaking marbling and when we cooked it ended up so tender and enticing.

We tried the jumbo prawns which were huge and juicy and scallops which WE possibly overlooked sadly (they just need a minute or so). My dining buddy left the prawn heads to cook down and ate those as well... his time in Japan had given his quite the exposure to interesting seafood experiences.

As well as bbq items we had a wonderfully presented sashimi platter, fresh and vibrant, a serve of delightful plump takoyaki balls and morish lotus chips.

Absolutely enjoyed our time at Shinbashi Yakiniku and so good to have another non-Italian option down this popular dining strip. Plenty of tables for larger groups and such a relaxing way to socialise over drinks and bbq meats.

Thanks so much for inviting us in.

Was expecting an awesome experience from the reviews but it was quite the opposite. Was there with my boyfriend on saturday night and was seated. After a minute of looking at the menu we were asked what we wanted to order. We were not ready yet and asked for 5 more minutes but after a minute we were asked again to order from the same waiter. We reluctantly ordered the wagyu set, small sashimi and edamame. Edamame was average. Wagyu was alright. Sashimi was extremely poor quality. One of the piece my boyfriend had and it was off. Didnt have a smell but was extremely slimey and boyfriend had to spit it out. The waiter notices and says she wil talk to the chef. No apology. We go to pay for the bill and no acknologement of the issue whatsoever and still had to pay full price which was +$100. Overpriced food with poor quality seafood and extremely poor service. Will not come back and do not recommend.
Food here is fantastic! The restaurant is spacious and they have well priced sets. I usually order the wagyu and pork trio sets and the servings are more than enough to feed 2. Only thing I don't quite like about the place is the seating area where you have take off your shoes. It's a hassle and it's dirty.

All you can eat for $60 is great value for money compared to other jap bbq restaurants. Great selection to choose from. However, meat was obviously frozen. Coal was low and we had to request for more to get the meat cooking. We found it funny that they served kimchi and not seaweed salad considering it was a jap restaurant but I'm not complaining. Staff were attentive.
Nicole
Went for their a-la-carte menu last Saturday and it didnt disappoint. Service was attentive although the shop was super busy! The quality of wagyu they serve was on another level. The sake recommended by the staff was also delicious!

The ‘tatami’ sittings were so nice but it was a bit hard to move around when you were sitting there lol.. I guess apart from that everything was amazing. Will definitely be back!

Woeful. Where do we begin? From the minute we walked in to the minute we left i don't think I've ever experienced such terrible service. Shinbashi pretends to be an authentic Japanese Yakiniku but it's lack of service standards and quality of food completely let it down. To begin with we received our coal bbq and a selection of prawns, squid, mushrooms and pumpkin. We placed these on the plate waiting around 15 minutes for them to cook, however due to the low heat of the coal the items were not cooking. We asked for some additional coal, and the staff came back with an additional order of meat and some coal. The host then proceeded to berate us for placing vegetables and prawns on the coal, not meats as these were fatty and would have helped to burn better, despite the fact that we didn't receive these until we complained about the low heat! We were met with delayed orders, mixed up orders, and constant checking with staff to see if we were able to be served all under their 90 minute food rule. At one stage we had to wait 25 minutes for a selection of meats - this was after asking the staff twice what was happening! I understand how a busy restaurant can work, however the lack of engagement by management with staff and guests has clearly left a lot to be desired. Stay away. There are soooooooooo many better options around.

Hmmm, not sure where to start but... let’s go.

had a booking for 8:15pm. Walked in at 8:10pm, got seated at 8:20pm and the first batch of food arrived at 9pm... so you can imagine.

For starters, the coal wasnt enough to get the meat cooking what so ever. It was only after we prompted them to add more did they realize they stuffed up. But that’s fine, it happens. At least now the meat started to sizzle a little.

One of the waitress rudely shrugged me off when I wanted to place an order for condiments, which didn’t arrive till 9:30pm. The menu was taken away and when I questioned why, I was told the kitchen closed at 9:30. I was shocked.

I do not understand the rave about this place. Yes, it’s delicately fitted out and they serve wagyu but even the wagyu comes out frozen.

The saving grace was definitely one of the waiters who was running around and still managed to serve with a smile. The operations of the business needs to be worked on as all the staff were doing every single task with no clear delegation. Some of the waitresses went into the kitchen to help with putting food out. It was chaos.

It’s easy to put out raw frozen meat(the customers are the ones who cook them anyway!) but charging a hefty price with poor service or zero operational sense might spell trouble in this extremely competitive industry.

It’s still early days I reckon and I wish things will get better for this place, once they iron out their shortcomings!

Shinbashi Yakiniku is a really nice Japanese BBQ place located on Lygon street. We got a chance to try their 9+ marbled wagyu beef and wow, they were amazing. It was grilled to medium-rare and it was melting in my mouth. The ox tongue was grilled with a slice of lemon on top, which makes it really delicious.

They also do all you can eat for $60 per person on Monday-Wednesday. Considering there's heaps of high quality meat and sashimi, I reckon it's a pretty good deal.

For drinks, we had the matcha beer, which was very nice and unique. We also had the matcha sake, best sake I ever had!

Definitely recommend this place.

4.5
Located on Lygon street , the last place you would expect would be a Japanese establishment specializing in BBQ. The interior is very cozy and the seating arrangement is a mix between traditional ( shoes off) and non traditional. Starting off our meal we decided to select a few dishes that were on the a la carte menu ( some of which are also on the all you can eat menu available Monday – Wednesday at only 60 per head !)
We started off our meal with a cup of chicken soup which made me feel good about the meal ahead, as it really warmed me right up. We had the wagyu hrami, wayu short rib, pork jowl, premium ox tongue , prawns , sirloin steak and some delicious marbled beef. The meat was of the highest quality and cooked to perfection by the wonderful staff ( all you can eat menu requires the diner to cook the meat themselves )The ox tongue was probably my favourite cut of meat as it was just the right thickness and was extremely tender which is quite rare.
The star of the night I must say was the 9+ marbling wagyu beef which is at market price disintegrated into my mouth and was one of the best pieces of beef I have ever tasted in Melbourne , would definately come back just to eat this again
We were happy to see that the all you can menu also offers other dishes such as sashimi which was quite fresh . We also ordered the takoyaki, cheese corn , butter enoki and much more, this was value for your buck for sure ! I also really enjoyed all the dishes that had the word butter and cheese in it and not ashamed to say we went back in for seconds.
Overall I think this venue offers diners a unique dining experience that is not only value for money but also provides great quality food. We highly recommend
Thank you so much for having us

Probably one of the best japanese restaurants ive been too! Waygu just melted in your mouth. Sashami was so fresh! Service was excellent. And last but not least, it was all you can eat waygu on monday-wednesdays! Compliments to the owner and chef who renovated this restaurant. Set up is amazing and we will definitely come back!

A great venue, had the all you can eat special which was excellent
i'd go so far as to say a better culinary experience than nobu.
Seafood was excellent as was the WAGU beef and all the other great stuff we ate!

Shinbashi Yakiniku is interesting – a unique, Japanese BBQ spot amidst the sprawling Italina restaurants that line Lygon Street. Yakiniku, by definition, means grilled meat, specialising in the art of Japanese barbeque. This Melbourne Japanese restaurant has just recently re-opened after an unfortunate consequence of being damaged by a neighbouring restaurant’s fire – but now, the interior is bright, clean, and refreshingly traditional – with slippers provided for you to sit in the BBQ grilling booths. They feature a 90 minute $60 BBQ buffet most days, which even features a delicious selection of premium quality wagyu!

Avoid the sashimi, but the BBQ was tip top! Delicious Smokey flavour. Good meat. I Definitely will come back again. Very friendly staff too.

The meat here is absolutely delicious but the draw back of all is the service and the grill. The charcoal isn’t hot enough and the meat takes forever , like forever to cook. Maybe we were just unlucky but the waitress that served us had no idea what she was doing and we had a few missing orders.
Stu
Stumbled upon this place the other night and we decided to give it a try. They have two styles of seating, a Japanese traditional where it’s on cushions with the shoes off or western style at a table. There is a great selection of meat which is cooked over hot coals at the table. The food was great and the staff were very friendly, I even loved the bitter green beer they had.

Genuine and authentic Japanese food is often hard to pull of outside of Japan, though Shinbashi Yakniku has done just that.
Paying great respect to fresh, quality ingredients is a must in Japanese cuisine, and the simple nature of a charcoal-pit barbecue ensured that the unadulterated and fresh sensations of these quality ingredients were evident in every single bite.
FOOD TRIP
Shimbashi Yakiniku is a Japanese eatery located in busy Lygon Street serving up an assortment of Japanese eats. They cater for table top BBQ as well as orders a la carte. We attended for a banquet night of a mix of both and everything was delicious. My favourites were the sashimi, wagyu harami, butter cheese sweet potato and the jumbo prawns, but everything is worth trying out!
Gastrology
Located in the bustling heart of Lygon Street Carlton, Shinbashi Yakiniku offers a unique Japanese barbeque experience. Fresh seafood and local meat dishes are grilled in a charocoal pit right in front of you and to your liking. . On this tasting evening, we started wih some well seasoned edamame, and a sashimi set to share amongst the group. These were a great way to whet the appetite before the main event which was the grilled meats. We were served Wagyu meats which included the short rib 9+, harami , and premium oyster blade. The marbling on the meats were clear to see and cooked tenderly just to the medium rare state we like. To accompany these meats, there were an assortment of dipping sauces, and sides dishes consisting of butter cheese sweet potato and cold udon noodles servied with a raw egg yolk to provide a creaminess to the dish. Next up were some fresh and generous sized prawns which were also cooked on the grill keeping the juiciness within the prawn.

What a pleasure it was to be invited to experience Yakiniku (grilled meat) at Shinbashi Yakiniku Japanese Barbecue on Lygon Street.

This was a first time experience for me and it did not disappoint. What a feast we had ahead of us. Luckily each dish came out gradually so we were able to pace ourselves.

The restaurant is small and cosy, has a lovely décor and is very well lit. Thankfully you don’t have to yell to speak to each other. The wait staff were very welcoming, cooked our BBQ right in front of us and assisted us with any additional requirements we had.

Our feast commenced with a bowl of chicken soup followed by edamame, cold udon noodles and a beautifully presented bowl of Sashimi. While I am not a huge sashimi fan, I felt that everything was extremely fresh and did not hesitate to try it all.

It was now time for the meat. We could not believe how beautifully presented raw meat could be :-) Wow, the plating was definitely on point.

Next in line was the Ox Tongue. Again this was a first for me and I must say this was delicious. Possibly my favourite of the night. Very tender and perhaps a slight chewy texture but it really worked! I’d definitely try this again.

The Wagyu Harami and Wagyu short rib followed, these were cooked perfectly for a few minutes and I really enjoyed these dipped into the delicious spicy miso sauce as well as the BBQ sauce.

Next in our meat feast was the Pork Belly and Sirloin Steak. These was ok but not my favourites of the night. I was really excited to try the Ocean Prawn Jombo. These prawns were huge and so tasty that I also ate my friends who has a seafood allergy. You cannot let Prawns go to waste right?

The peach tea was a refreshing drink to accompany all our dishes. We also had the pleasure of experiencing a Sake tasting from the Kikusui Sake Company. I’m no Sake expert but this stuff is deceptively strong and tasty. The first one I tried (see photo) was my favourite, it had a slightly sweet taste and went down a treat.

We discovered that the same Sake can taste different depending on a variety of factors including food pairing choice, shape of glass, age, serving temperature, storage conditions and a person's physical condition.

Thank you for inviting us and providing such a wonderful experience.
Good Food Good Mood
I was fortunate enough to be invited to a tasting event last night at Shinbashi Yakiniku (now there's a mouthful) located on prime real estate in Lygon st amongst all the delicious Italian eateries. SY provides a respite from the stream of pizza and pasta offering up a fun and novel experience of Japanese bbq. The interactive element is enjoyable and entertaining and something everyone should try their hand at cooking at least once.
There are plenty of options available ordering wise be it a la carte, set menus or all you can eat. I would definitely recommend all you can eat as a value option if you have a large appetite. The menu also has lots of pictures which aids the more visual among us.
Staff were super friendly and knowledgable with the warm demeanour you always experience in a Japanese restaurant from the moment you step in to the welcoming sounds of irrashaimase (wow, it took all of my Year 12 Japanese to remember that one).
We started off with some chicken soup which was awesome as I walked in freezing from a chilly Melbourne night. We followed with some edamame and a sashimi set which was divine. Ultra fresh and delicious and the flavour even more elevated when I dipped it into what they called a BBQ sauce. If this conjures up visuals of a Masterfoods bottle don't fret I think in this instance the name comes from the fact you use it on the BBQ meat although it did have a sweet flavour it was more a soy sauce consistency. Yum.
Vego wise we tried the cold udon and the butter cheese sweet potato. The udon was a traditional style dish with an egg yolk on top and some dried seaweed which you mix through the dish. It presented well and was something I hadn't tried before. I couldn't resist mixing in a bit of the BBQ sauce I was so obsessed with although I'm sure that's not the authentic way to eat it!
The sweet potato had a really interesting flavour almost like a buttery sweet biscuit. It was really cool to put the potato onto the hot plate and pull it off and mash it up. Diy mash at the table. Fun.
Next up all the wagyu; short rib, oyster blade and harami. Oyster blade was my favourite cut as it was super tender and flavoursome. Plenty of sake and tea to wash it all down (the peach and the lychee quite sweet but very refreshing).
The highlight for me was the ginormous prawns. I don't think I've ever seen such large prawns they were practically the equivalent of four normal prawns. So juicy and delicious. Others enjoyed the ox tongue also but I wasn't game. I loved how they changed the grill each time they cooked a different type of meat which is great if you have pescatarians dining with you who don't want any remnants of your beef on their seafood. The charcoal pit is really cool too and makes for a unique night out. Go on. Try something different!

Don't even bother . Table of 7 people on a tuesday afternoon around 6.30pm we ordered all you can eat BBQ. ALL of the entrees where nice and came out really fast . Only reason why I give it 1.5. The bbq charcoal took forever to heat up and when it was it took forever for meat to come our FROZEN Whuch dried out the meat while cooking it unevenly and me at ended up being very chewy and unsatisfying to eat. We asked for Ox tongue about 6 times and lettuce 3 times which was brought out last .

I'm not sure what's so hard about defrosting your meat before dinner time and checking up on your customers.

Lovely BBQ place on Lygon street, their first is in Brisbane has been open for 8 years and they just opened this one last November. I had tried ox tongue (the best on in Melb I would say), pork jowl, scallops + jumbo prawns was very fresh and their special 9+ wagyu short rib, it's just melted in my mouth. Price-wise it was reasonable for this quality of meat. Will definitely come back 😋👍🏻👍🏻

Bought a deal and came for dinner. Its pretty value of money. From edamame to salad and small sashimi to bbq like chicken thigh, pork belly to wagyu and sake too. The highlight of the night for me would be the wagyu oyster blade. Its soft and juicy. The wagyu beef a bit of downside as it was rough!
The place itself very cosy and staffs are very attentive and friendly. Well done!
