I was walking along Swan Street, trying to find something to eat. It's not a hard task, but I didn't want to go down the usual path. As I walked along, I spotted Moth to a Flame, and was drawn in. I'm not sure why: from the outside, it's nothing special, but something said to me that this was worth a try.
I opened the door and walked in. Compared to some of the other cafes down the road, this was quiet. Very quiet, especially for a Saturday morning. I ordered a coffee and sat at one of the many empty tables, and thought to myself that quiet usually reflects the quality of a cafe. Within a minute or two, my coffee was in front of me, and it was good! Unlike some of the busier cafes in the area, there was no hint of the coffee being burnt. It was full of flavor, and I found myself drinking it almost too fast, such was my enjoyment.
I settled on the Crushed Avo with grilled bacon and a poached egg. Before I knew it, my breakfast was sitting on the table. The egg was cooked perfectly, and there was just the right mix of avocado, feta and herbs. This was not the quality I had expected when I walked through the door. This was better than any of the others in the area. If only those down the road knew what they were missing as they sat in the overcrowded and impossibly loud cafes with their hipster wait-staff and ironic artwork.
Moth to a Flame is not trendy. You won't see any AFL players or their Insta-famous girlfriends inside this unassuming cafe, but what you will get is good quality food, coffee and fresh juice (ordered an OJ as I wrote this. Had to stop myself ordering another). The staff that are attentive and polite. So if you're looking to try something a bit quieter, but don't want to sacrifice quality, be drawn in by this little gem, like a Moth to a Flame.
The coffee at this place is brilliant. I come here from time to time and it's the only place I can get a consistently really great coffee every single time!
The menu is interesting, with some Malaysian influences, but it would be good to see some new stuff on it too.
The service is spot-on, the servings generous, the food fresh.
Some quirky softdrink options (eg. organic softdrinks, Mexican softdrinks, interesting juices) would be a bonus?
The only complaint I would have is the horrible cigarette smoke drifting in from the tables on the street... I think the tables opposite the door should be no smoking (all of them no smoking would be better!)
Cool place on Swan street. Good vibe (tunes are always easy on the ear). Coffee awesome! Try the corn fritters and run the risk of eating them non stop every day for a fortnight. Lovely team of people too.
Beautiful coffee, nice food and the friendliest staff ever! Edgy cool barista chick helped us build a list of places to go and things to experience in Melbourne ;) We only visiting town for a week for business and had no idea what to do otherwise. Now have a schedule full of museums and jazz gigs ;)
Was shopping in Richmond and stopped in this little Cafe for a quick bite. What i got was this delicious chicken burger. Such a pleasant surprise. Will be coming back. Supburb
My first review ever! We.... My first review ever!
Went for a late breakfast on Saturday after a recommendation from a work colleague.
Was not disappointed! The place was packed to the rafters. After waiting a few minutes for a table, my partner and I were seated. We had to wait for our order to be taken and for our food to arrive due to it being so busy. But once it did it was amazing. Fantastic poached eggs covered in perhaps the best hollandaise sauce I have ever tasted. My partner had the blueberry pancakes and after stealing more than a mouthful they were astonishing. The coffee was delicious as well.
However, we went again on Monday for breakfast and was slightly disappointed. The staff were different and so was the food. Will be going back, but probably only on the weekend.
So overall, a positive experience!
Amazing service. Our little man was starving and grumpy. The staff did everything they could to make our lives easier with crying child.
Cracking place. Has the eggs Benedict and it was exactly how they should be. Ham for starters, sourdough perfectly cooked eggs and a deliciously light hollandaise I could of drank. Had a side of chorizo which was not the best I've had but still nice. Good OJ also. Will be back
Totally Perfect. Three of us went for brekky on Sunday morning. Coffee was wonderful, really well made. My Eggs Benny was superb and my partner's pulled pork was so tasty, yum, I'm having that next time. And our friend's comment on his blueberry pancake was, "Best pancake I've ever had in my life!" Service was fast, friendly and distractingly handsome (OK, I know that's not relevant, but it doesn't hurt). Love this place and we will be coming back for sure.
Great all round place!. Went there for a late breakfast this Sunday. Was quite busy and we had to wait a while for our meal, but boy, was it worth it! Was told there was a new chef and that was the delay. But the staff were super friendly and because of the layout of the cafe we could see that everyone was working flat out and the place was very busy!
The eggs were probably the best poached eggs we have had in Melbourne yet and the pulled pork was amazing.
Very nice coffee as well. The vibe and general atmosphere of the cafe was very comfortable and we cant wait to go again!
Highly recommended.
What an awesome experience! Lovely staff, great food and coffee! Was openly welcomed with a pram and made extra comfy!
0mg Wow, just Wow from the moment i walked in to Moth to a flame, i was greeted with many smiling faces , ordering my coffee was a quick and easy process , then squizzing over the menu , i stated to drool, so i just had to try the pulled pork shoulder, i have NEVER been so happy with a meal , the pork was soo succulent , big on flavour and a generous size dish , i just cant wait to try the rest of the menu, you can bet your boots i will be back, and omg the coffee was to die for!!
I've been here most days in the last few weeks as its our closest cafe since we moved house. Also as my older son loves the babycinos here so he generally demands a trip there. I usually just have a coffee (and an occasional brownie or muffin) which are mostly great. Yesterday however, I decided to have lunch too. It's a pretty limited menu but I had to post a review as what I ate was so delicious. I had the slow cooked beef roll. It was only $10 and I wasn't expecting much but it was just amazing. The beef was flavoursome and melt in the mouth tender, the roll was crisp and fresh, the red cabbage and cheese and sauce were all just great. I only wished it was bigger. It was plenty big enough - it was just so damn yummy and I'm a bit greedy... I'll definitely eat this roll again and try other meals too now that I know the food is do good.
Lovely cafe. FANTASTIC service. The Portobello mushroom dish had a well balanced flavour and the eggs were cooked beautifully. I will be sure to return.
Excellent breakfast the menu is really different it is hard to decide what to get, i had the avocado with feta and it is fantastic!.... bit busy on Saturday though so had to wait a little longer
Not fair. Moth to a Flame, it is the most welcoming cafe, they know most of their customers by name, helped i'm sure by the 'old tired coffee cards' on the wall, some of us don't even use the discount, we're just happy that we were there from the start, and are rapt that they remember us by name, and a little bit of a personal chat. Dan and his staff are wonderful, very attentive, the food is delicious and Dan is always looking for new, inventive things to put on the menu. i come here most mornings for coffee, sometimes for lunch and breakfast and i have never been dissapointed.
Lovely service, great coffee. I sat here for hours with a book no questions asked. Would definitely go back!
Good coffee and food looks good but I don't think the maylasian eggs are my thing but they were poached nicely
I Just Love Good Food

Great friendly staffs. Portobello mushroom is my favorite.
Had their baked eggs !! Yummylicious!
Loved the latte too!! Creamy n well balanced! Food & drinks are well priced n owner is really nice! Not too noisy for a meet up with friends :)
Best Coffee in town!. Mornings are complete after a cup of coffee at Moth to a Flame. The owner Dan and his staff makes the whole experience complete. I just wish that they had a branch near where I live! :D
Great service, very attentive. Nice relaxing feel to the place.
Burning Bright, Little Moth. Had heard a bit of buzz about this place but had a hard time finding it as it doesn't really stand out until your meal is plated up. It is a bit minimalist both in decor and in terms of the menu but I have to say I really enjoyed my breakfast here. According to the chef (who was super lovely) the inspiration is Mexican/South American and he did it very well. The lack of Mexican brekkies in Melbourne confounds me and MtaF may well solve this issue for me. Brekkie basics are available but give some of the more specialized options a go. Did not try the coffee but the regulars seemed to enjoy the brew and the banter on offer.
WOW what a great breakfast. Thank you so much for a great Sunday breakfast. Fantastic menu with something for everyone. Very friendly and obliging staff. Food beautifully presented. Far exceeded my expectations!! Pity I live in Wellington, New Zealand!!
Welcome to swan street )) and very welcome you are , excellent coffee and leaf tea with fresh chef made delights and interesting meals .
A new bonus to our great Richmond village ! 5 stars
forward to july 2013 just a follow up on the always beautiful moth , been going herefor nearly a year and always a great meal and good service , still 5 stars
GREAT FOOD AND COFFEE. I'm a new business owner in the Swan Street area. I was working in Chapel street and didn't think the food could compare! I am so excited to say that the food as moth to a flame didn't only compare but completely smashed my expectations! Dan is such a friendly man (yes I have even got on a first name basis with the owner, he's THAT friendly), but you still get that special time to relax and enjoy your coffee. I wish them the very best success and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Moth to a Flame to friends, family and strangers!!!
Wonderful addition to Swan Street. Being a new mum in Richmond means spending a lot of time in cafes to keep as sane as possible. This cafe is a much needed addition to Swan street because not only is the cafe baby-friendly (ramp access and plenty of space for a pram) but the food is fresh (you can see it being made right there) and delicious. The best bit is the service which makes us feel like we are in a friend's house. I'll probably regret writing this review when we can't get a table for lunch...
Be drawn to the light!. I've got to confess, I'm writing this as a tourist, not a local, but I was blown away by my recent visit to Moth to a Flame. In my mind, I have Melbourne pegged as a real 'cafe society' and Moth to a Flame stands out as the best of the best - great food, relaxed, drop-in-and-feel-like-an-old-friend atmosphere, unbeatable service and a really great vibe. We were looked after by Dan, who was superb: knowledgeable about the (great) menu, laid back, welcoming and just plain fun! I heartily recommend this place - you won't get your wings singed!
Cannot recommend this place enough! Amazing food , lovely staff and open nice and early on the weekdays:)
