I was walking along Swan Street, trying to find something to eat. It's not a hard task, but I didn't want to go down the usual path. As I walked along, I spotted Moth to a Flame, and was drawn in. I'm not sure why: from the outside, it's nothing special, but something said to me that this was worth a try.
I opened the door and walked in. Compared to some of the other cafes down the road, this was quiet. Very quiet, especially for a Saturday morning. I ordered a coffee and sat at one of the many empty tables, and thought to myself that quiet usually reflects the quality of a cafe. Within a minute or two, my coffee was in front of me, and it was good! Unlike some of the busier cafes in the area, there was no hint of the coffee being burnt. It was full of flavor, and I found myself drinking it almost too fast, such was my enjoyment.
I settled on the Crushed Avo with grilled bacon and a poached egg. Before I knew it, my breakfast was sitting on the table. The egg was cooked perfectly, and there was just the right mix of avocado, feta and herbs. This was not the quality I had expected when I walked through the door. This was better than any of the others in the area. If only those down the road knew what they were missing as they sat in the overcrowded and impossibly loud cafes with their hipster wait-staff and ironic artwork.
Moth to a Flame is not trendy. You won't see any AFL players or their Insta-famous girlfriends inside this unassuming cafe, but what you will get is good quality food, coffee and fresh juice (ordered an OJ as I wrote this. Had to stop myself ordering another). The staff that are attentive and polite. So if you're looking to try something a bit quieter, but don't want to sacrifice quality, be drawn in by this little gem, like a Moth to a Flame.
The coffee at this place is brilliant. I come here from time to time and it's the only place I can get a consistently really great coffee every single time!
The menu is interesting, with some Malaysian influences, but it would be good to see some new stuff on it too.
The service is spot-on, the servings generous, the food fresh.
Some quirky softdrink options (eg. organic softdrinks, Mexican softdrinks, interesting juices) would be a bonus?
The only complaint I would have is the horrible cigarette smoke drifting in from the tables on the street... I think the tables opposite the door should be no smoking (all of them no smoking would be better!)
Cool place on Swan street. Good vibe (tunes are always easy on the ear). Coffee awesome! Try the corn fritters and run the risk of eating them non stop every day for a fortnight. Lovely team of people too.
