Review Ayam Penyet Ria Melbourne - Melbourne

Ayon Banerjee
The Iga penyet was delicious and it was comfort food at its best. The chicken sate was great and had authentic flavours. The lamb sate was a bit too sweet but went really well with the peanut sauce in the chicken sate! Service was quick. The table and seats were not too clean but won't stop me from coming back.

It's really good fried chicken. Deep fried well and crispy skin outside. The chicken inside was not too dry. The taste is similar to Hat Yai Fried Chicken in our country as well. The chili paste is eaten separately. There are 5 choices of chilli paste. Let's make it the most spicy. It's red one. Highly recommend

LOVE this place. The menu is simple, the Indonesian-style fried chicken is so delicious with its crunchy bits and super spicy, home-made chilli sauce. Love the iga and eggplant penyet, fried tahu and tempe as well. The martabak was pretty terrible though, tastes nothing like a real martabak, it was dry, tasteless and bland. The ambiance could also improve but nice enough for a quick lunch/dinner.

1 of Indonesian restaurant that I'll always recommend to my friend whenever they want to try my local food. It's pretty authentic like back home. If you like gado-gado, will strongly recommend theirs because it's so good 🥰 their beef ribs never fail me, tender and pretty generous portion (can see in picture).

Really delicious grilled slow cook beef meal. The beef is full of flavor, very soft, tender and easily falls off the bone. The peanut sauce goes so well with it and like the side dishes too except the salad which was quite dry. The desserts look good, didn’t get to try. Definitely want to come back and try other dishes.

This is my 2nd time visiting Ayam penyet Ria at south melbourne. The staffs was very rude n not friendly at all. I ordered sate ayam, the peanut sauce was very oily. There was no staff to clean the table as well. I will think twice to coming back here. Very disappointed.

I tried ayam penyet which was 13$, a bit salty but yum. The plate included tempeh and tofu as well. They have a robot serve you as waiter which is sooooo good, loved that. Highly recommended 👍👍 It is self service you can grab cutlery, water, glass,… Super friendly and the price is fair👍

I really like the Ayam Bakar! It was so good with the rice and super spicy Indonesian chilli! I tried the Martabak telor today and I couldn’t stop eating it 😁

Has always had cravings for Indonesian foods (tasty, spiciness, and full of flavour). I find the authenticity from Ayam Penyet Ria. Famous for its: Ayam Penyet and from the rest of the menu. The foods are as what can be expected from back home. I personally enjoyed their: Ayam Penyet, ayam geprek, empal penyet, batagor, sate ayam, etc. Their prompt and friendly service assured customer feeling taken care of. Ayam Penyet Ria is my top list to go for Indonesian food. Especially during this restriction in Melbourne, their free delivery with minimum order is one thing i am looking forward to..

Perfect. Everything id perfect. Cant wait to try the rest

The only place i can go to have authentic taste of home. I ordered for a delivery and they came pretty quick and friendly customer service. I would order again when i miss more ayam penyet. 👌🏼
We had Indonesian food delivered to us
.
Ayam penyat - chicken was precooked and all that that had to be done was to cook the ingredients. The chicken was very cooked. Loved the crumbs that added crunch. The tofu was soft and the tempeh was compressed and we'll flavoured. The signature chilli is quite spicy adding a kick to the dish.

*We had won this dish in a giveaway but review based on own opinion.

Comfort foods all the time! We ordered few times during the lockdown, the foods still maintained the quality as we dined in. Love it.

We loved getting a take-away Indonesian feast from Ayam Penyet Ria to enjoy at home.

To start, we adored the sate Madura - succulent, aromatic, freshly grilled chicken satay skewers which we slathered in the decadent and perfectly spiced satay sauce. The risoles were similarly delicious. Crispy on the outside and filled with s creamy chicken and vegetable mix.

For mains we adored their two signature dishes: the Ayam Penyet (Smashed Fried Chicken) and Iga Penyet (Twice cooked Ribs). The two most sought after dishes by regulars, they were each expertly prepared. An outer crisp layer encased soft and tender chicken and beef courtesy of being slow cooked for many hours before frying. A myriad of spices are used which seep into the meat so that every morsel is full of flavour.

Served with Indonesian favourites such as deep-fried beancurd, soybean cake, an assortment of vegetables and topped with either the luxurious peanut sauce or spicy chilli relish, these dishes offer patrons an authentic taste of East Javanese food.

Ayam Geprek was another stunner. The beautifully battered and seasoned fried chicken was wonderfully crunchy and topped with mouth-watering sambal. A word of caution though, this dish is not for the faint hearted – the sambal is incredibly delicious but also incredibly spicy!

Dessert time continued to please. The sweet martabak was a must have. A very popular sweet treat in Indonesia, it’s a fluffy and very thick "pancake" with fillings such as chocolate, crushed peanuts, condensed milk and cheese (which as strange as it sounds, works a treat - highly recommend!). The Durian Es Chendol was another winner. Strictly for durian lovers only, this was perfect as a refreshing sweet drink or even as a dessert. This baby is made traditionally with aromatic pandan, gula melaka and coconut milk. The addition of durian morsels made this sheer indulgence.

I used to order their beef iga but somehow too salty recently.
End up, I chose to order their signature chicken gerepek and ayam penyet. Really hope they check before serving.
Eat_today_diet_tomorrow
I ordered the takeaway to have at home. They are really yummy. Probably one of the best indo food I have ever had. Really like their sambal and peanut sauce! Grilled chicken, satae and smashed beef were delicious.

Thanks to the recommendation from an Indonesian friend.

❤️: Couldn’t have asked for a better spread. We had to signature Ayam Penyet and Ayam Bakar. I especially loved the Gado Gado (peanut sauce 😂🥜) and warm Soto Ayam for this cold weather.
Hello. Imnikki
One of the best Indonesian restaurant around, and not to mention cheap and cheerful too. The famous ayam penyet is a must order here – tender and juicy chicken, with a beautifully crunchy batter and incredibly well-seasoned. The grilled chicken or beef is another must try with its bold and robust flavour. Similarly, the Soto Ayam shines with its deeply savoury broth that is just so comforting and addictive. Pair all of these with the delicious spicy sambal and you’ll be in for a gastronomical adventure.

The home to amazing ayam penyet and indonesian food.

This place reminds me of home cooked and authentic indonesian flavours. Its popular amongst the locals and they do get pretty busy

My favourite is the ayam penyet with rice with a side of tempeh. Dont forget their amazing chilli as it brings it to another level

Been my favourite Indonesian penyetan restaurant since i arrived in melbourne. For me they have the most authentic recipe amongst other Indonesian penyetan restaurant. They said that the duck has been slow cooked for 3 hours and that's why it is so tender and full of flavour. 🐣🐣

Such a perfect combination with their chilli sambal and fried crumbss !!

P.s this smash duck menu is special item, they wont have it all week long, so you better call them first ☎️
________________________
🏠 : Ayam Penyet Ria
🏷️ : Smashed Duck
💸 : $ 12
Worth The Calories : 9/10
⏰ : 12:00 - 21:00
📍 : 248 Clarendon St, South Melbourne VIC 3205, Australia

I’m from Indonesia and I’m loving this restaurant as it’s a little piece of home in this big Melbourne city 🇮🇩💕
Such delicious dishes as well! Very similar taste to the ones back home!
I need to go back here ASAP 😍

Chicken was decent, not worth the wait. We waited for 35 minutes for the dishes to come. For a place that sells chicken and rice (as their main “products”) they do not cook them fast enough. Staff service was slow, lots of casual talking among staff over the food. Don’t think I’ll recommend or revisit. They could also use some improvement on hygiene. Saw staff throwing a ticket on the food that is to be served to a table. No hats/bandanas/gloves/masks.

This is a place you visit for great food, not if you're expecting fantastic service
EatorTreat
We love the food here, as it reminds me of home!
Our favourites are their ayam penyet and iga penyet dishes, which we always add an additional rice to.
The only thing is sometimes, they need to be more consistent and faster in their service.

My friends and I love to come here on Sundays since we’re in the area. Wish the store was bigger, because there’s always so many customers, especially after church service.

The food doesn’t take too long to arrive. I usually get the Ayam Penyet (Smashed Chicken) or the Iga (Beef Ribs). Both are amazing. They come with either the chili or peanut sauce. The chili is really really hot, but my friends love it so much that they’ll ask for seconds. I love putting kecap manis on mine, just to give it an added sweetness.

Also highly recommend trying the Martabak Manis, which is an Indonesian thick pancake. Ours had chocolate and cheese. Absolutely enjoyed it!

As Indonesian, this’s one of my favourite Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne.
Ayam Penyet-Fried chicken and Iga Penyet-Beef ribs are delicious and soft as always, the authentic chilli sauce aka sambal will be spicy for normal person :) and it’s very tasty. If you don’t like sambal or something spicy you can swap with peanut sauce which I don’t recommend. Or you can mix the sambal with sweet soy sauce to reduce the spiciness and enchant the taste.

Also we tried the sour soup ( Sayur Asem) which completed our lunch combo. It’s so fresh and gets along with the main meal ( ayam penyet and iga penyet)

The only downside is that they have limited seat, when it’s packed we should wait to get seat. However it’s worth to wait.

My friend and I went to South Melbourne to get pampered. However after our appointment we got so hungry. We saw this restaurant near by, fate gave us all the luck and brought us to this restaurant! their food was amazing, however its quite packed when its lunch time! My friend had the Penyet ayam (which is the chicken) and I had the Penyet Iga (beef ribs) and we were both very happy with our food! I'll definitely come back and bring my other friends along! Wish you guys have branch in the west side!

This place is taking over! I first tried it in Noble Park and they have now opened a few others. It hasn't disappointed yet! A great menu so well priced and smack bang with flavour.
Janna Beh
Affordable and authentic! Peanut sauce with the AYAM chicken and rice was delicious. Perfect crispy ness and the sauce was divine, a little tingle of spicy and perfect satay type sauce. Also ordered the coconut beef soup; similar to Thai flavour except more watered down and less intense but still lovely for a winter night! Decent portions for decent prices. The place was busy during dinner time but staff were friendly and polite.
PetiteTummy
as an indonesian , it makes me miss my hometown very much as it really fulfill my tastebuds! the “sambal” (spicy sauce) was very satisfying! their chicken is crispy, tender, and good flavour all! and must try their “rawon” for those who love spicy flavourful beef soup. the meat is really tenderrrr n the soup really challenges your tastebud but in other side it was satisfying and addicting, staff were friendly too. definitely gonna comeback again❤️
Agnes
The foods are amazing! The chili is spicy, the meat is tender. Everything is just amazing. I wish they had a branch in Sydney so I can enjoy this amazing food everyday!
Nice plae but very crowded when lunch hour. And the food very light and taste good. Maybe different like Soto Betawi but it,s okay for me. Next time i try ayam penyet or try reach Burwood or Boxhill because i too far reach in South Melbourne
Fendi
Affordable eatery place that serves fried chicken and beef ribs with extremely spicy chilli sauce. Service is quick and friendly. They also serve indonesian dessert which is to die for
Streaky Eats
A small eatery with tight seating and a simple menu that focus straight to what they are known for, Indonesian penyet/smashed dishes and a few soup selections. Here’s what I got:. 1. Ayam Penyet + Rice. Close-up of the spicy sambalAyam penyet ($10) + rice ($2). The ayam penyet dish comes standard with fried tofu, tempeh, and the key ingredient that makes ayam penyet, ayam penyet, the super spicy chili sambal.

My homesickness is cured!

The short rib was crispy yet very tender and juicy. Perfectly seasoned. Don't get me started on the sambal. It was absolutely delicious. Living abroad, I didn't think I would get this kind of sambal taste for a while.

The epitome of Indonesian cuisine.
Tainaradmorais
I went there because the food looked good in the photo and I got actually surprised when I ate.. it tastes even better than it looks like! Awesome peanut sauce! Highly recommended!

Two meals for $20 more or less, amazing flavours and super decent prices! Highly recommend this nice little diner located in south Melbourne 😊

Very authentic Indonesian eatery. Love the marinated beef dish and the turmeric chicken soup. Menu not extensive but certainly tasty and cheap. Atmosphere could be better. Great service.
Snowflower
Fast and efficient service. Food came out very quickly. Ordered the chicken with rice and the gado gado. For some reason, even though we ordered the same dishes, one came out to be chicken breast without the tofu, the other turned out to be chicken thigh with the tofu. I would recommend asking for the thigh as it’s juicer and more tender. The peanut sauce was really yummy - go for that if you are not one for really spicy chilli as the other option - the sambal chilli - was VERY spicy. Overall, a good dining experience. Would recommend.
Crabapples For Lunch
This is more of a 3.5 stars. Along with Meetbowl down the street, these 2 restaurants offer an authentic taste of Indonesian food. Ayam Penyet features rice dishes with grilled or fried proteins as their staple. These are pretty typical casual style dishes and you often see Indonesians eating here.

The food itself is quite flavourful and done pretty well, though I do find that their dishes are sometimes a bit dry. However, this is quite typical of this style of food so that's not entirely the fault of the food, but I do wish there was some sauce on the rice or dish. Ambience is quite casual and utilitarian - there are a few tables indoors and outdoors but don't expect much.

Taste quie nice. I like the sayur asem soup, its taste so nice and make me miss my home so bad. Will come back again next time. Price is affordable as well.
Foodiemum
Great find and good price. As soon as it opens, people started to line up. Ordered Iga and ayam, it was so yummy! Must try when in South melbourne.
Makan2Melbourne
Best sambal in Melbourne! It’s hard to find a spicy sambal in Melbourne. The one in Ayam Penyet RIA was similar to the ones in Indonesia. I tried the Iga penyet and the empal penyet. The empal was a perfect pairing with the rice and sambal. The iga was inconsistent. Some of the meat was tough, some was tender. What I liked most about the dishes were the tempe. The tempe and sambal combination was my favourite. The tahu was unlike the ones in Indonesia, it was more like a Japanese tofu. The other dishes, gado-gado, lacked of peanut flavour, the sayur asem was too sour, and the soto was just OK. Definitely stick to the Penyet dishes. It was the place to get authentic Indonesian flavour.
Vivek Mahtani
Hands down. Best ayam penyet in Melbourne! Their Empal Penyet is pretty nice too.

Great that u can buy the sambal but troublesome that u have to collect it the next day.
Lovefood
Too hungry to take picture, but I like food taste in this place, the beef, tempe, tofu and especially the chili were great. Not have many place to sit because they close the second floor. Have to wait for seat or dine outside restaurant in sunday lunch hour. Bring cash, they don’t receive card.

I love this place, another one to make it into Melbourne’s cheap eats.. Coming here on a Sunday afternoon the queue was quite long, but wait wasn’t.. Staff ensured that everyone had a seat before taking orders..
Great chicken and ribs, also had the Soto which was average and had a lingering msg taste.. If you like chilli sauces this place has the best chilli sauce.. Also a number of indon sweets and cakes available at the counter that I will come back and try again..
Oodreiilittlepotato
The best indonesian fried chicken❤️ well it was actually okay... but go to place if i craved for indonesian food! $10 for fried chicken, tempeh tahu and some of side veggie + $2 for jasmine rice. Definitely filling! + extra $1 for fried bits! But yeah worth to try :)
*i think the price went up a bit🤔
Khorry Sila
The smashed ribs is all time favourite whenever i come. The chilies was a bit too spicy for me, but if you cannot eat spicy, don’t ever eat caused everyone say it’s devil hot. The smashed chicken was lovely too. But if i ask my friend to try here, i always ask my friend to try gado gado as well as one of authentic indonesian food.
Brendan Lee
Had the soto ayam and ayam smashed chicken. Soto ayam was very salty making it hard to enjoy. Ayam smashed chicken had a very boney piece of thigh, like the boney chickens on the streets of Indonesia with little meat and a lot of bones.
Roby Cahyadi
its really good food and the taste is same with real taste on Indonesian food especially the traditional Indonesian belacan sauce! fell like in Indonesia!
Sivashankar Sivam
This place packs a punch with its spice so it’s not for the faint hearted!

Got the ayam penyet and my lord, It opened up every single pore on my skin and it gave me a good sweat out!

However, the flavours and portioning are almost always never consistent! That can be a little disappointing but overall still a good fuss free place to dine in at
R
Simple tasty Indonesian food at a reasonable price. What more could you ask for? The 'ayam' chicken penyet is tender and delicious but the 'iga' ribs looked even better. One to try next time. You get to choose an accompanying sauce : peanut or spicy (and by 'spicy' I mean searingly hot. Phew!)
Homer
The sambhal chilli was delight. so hoooot ! The food was good with stuff like tofu coming out super yumm. Overall a very good restaurant with well priced food.
Nomafoodic Chipineats
Ayam penyet is good, chilli is extremely spicy! The chicken Soto I like too. Beef soup Batawi has a very interesting mix of flavour, definitely something I’ve not had before. Not my favourite out of the 3 but something I can appreciate.

Good spot for a quick economical meal. Enjoyed the chicken with authentic flavour of a local Indonesian cuisine. Sambal was a delight as well!
The Hand That Bites
I've been here a few times and it's very hit or miss. Sometimes the food is excellent, other times it's not so good. Their food is packed full of Asian flavour and when it's good, it's really good. Another time I went and I got the smashed ribs, it was really dry. It's popular with the Indonesian crowd and it's also great value. Their home made chilli sauce is super spicy, but I love it. You can get a decent meal here for 12 bucks, so it's definitely in the cheap eats category. I'll be back for sure, but they need to improve on the freshness of their food. It's a cool little shop that brings back memories of eating on the streets of Asia.

If you are looking for authentic indonesian food, go here.

Sambal is very spicy.
Their famous menu is the smacked chicken and ribs.
They also have other indonesian menu, but my favorit is the chicken.

Fairly busy around lunch and dinner time.

They also have the indonesian snack (siomay and indonesian pancake - martabak)
Dalki007
Bought takeaway IGA penyet and Ayam penyet. Literally only fried ribs/ chicken. No tempe or fried beancurd. For the price paid, it is way too expensive. Sad.
Windy
Went with my family for dinner. Our table was quite oily. We had to clean it ourself. Had soto betawi and ayam penyet. Soto was in good portion but it was just alright. Ayam penyet was tender and the fried tofu and tempe was nice accompaniment.
Sherin Huang You Ning
Really love the authentic Indonesian foodie taste!❤️
The meats were so crunchy and juicy and delicious
Always come here when I miss Indo foodies
Definitely the best Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne ❤️
Valerie Nethania
Went here yesterday cus i was craving for ayam penyet. I miss indonesian food:( but guess what happened. THE FREAKING BIRD POOPED RIGHT ONTO MY FRIENDS' BAG AND SHOULDERS OH MY GOOODNESS (bless their souls) So BE CAREFUL GUYS DONT SEAT OUTSIDE
PS. the chicken was really delicious. Ill definitely come back (but wont seat outside)
Anindya
Great taste and great staffs! Ordered the ever so famous ‘Smashed Chicken’ aka ‘Ayam Penyet’ and was not dissapointed. Would absolutely love it if they’ll open another franchise in the city sometime in the future:)
Ferry Gondo
The place I go to when I miss eating Indonesian 'Penyet' style rice. Crushed chili paste with deep fried, no-batter chicken legs over hot rice. Cant't stop eating it. With bare hands.

“Beware the sambal.” He said between bites.
“Is it dangerous? Will it conspire to murder me? Or perhaps, possess my personal details and steal my identity?” He studied the heap of brownish red sauce, winking at him with a glossy glint. He sniffed it and its pungency assaulted his delicate senses. His friend smiled.
“Or perhaps it hurls you into the pits of a self-made hell.”
Smith gingerly touched his fork to the red heap and cautiously put it in his mouth. A rapid cascade of biological processes fired off, sending chemicals screaming down neurological pathways into his spine and warming his cheeks.
“Potent.”
“Yup. Yet,” his friend added, round another mouthful of rice and beef spareribs. “Amazing flavourful.”
“Verily so.” Smith nodded in admiration. Before him sat two plates. He had wanted the fried chicken, the signature dish, which the restaurant is also named after - Ayam Penyet, or Chicken Smash to translate it literally, but his friend had also recommended the beef spareribs, Iga. As his friend was a notorious miser with food, Smith had no alternatives but to order both dishes.
Also, he was ridiculously hungry after an entire day with no breakfast and lunch. But he like to think that reviewer of foods, he was left with no choice but to indulge himself.
He forked the beef in, noting the tender yet juicy meat falling off the bone as though it had been stewed for hours. Words just ceased after that.
“Authentic,” his friend chimed, thanking the lady for the Indonesian interpretation of an eggplant tempura.
“Good. Very good,” was the reply.

One of the most authentic Indonesian fried chicken around Melbourne. The chilli have good balance of flavour and spiciness like how it supposed to be. The fried side dish such as the tofu and tempe are also good. You can also try the small snacks that they sell near the cashier such as the cake. It's pretty good as well.

The service here sometimes a bit hit and miss but the food always consistent. I just find it weird they close on Tuesday oh well it doesn't necessarily a bit thing it's just a bit out of ordinary.
DP.Syarifuddin
Always been my favorite restaurant. Ayam penyet, iga penyet, empal penyet are my favorites. The service is amazing, friendly staff, but whoever in charge of dishwashing, please wash the plates & cutleries thoroughly. You are serving customers including kids, think of hygiene.

Aced the flavour taste! The chili in the sambal is super hot, I can't down it. But everything tastes so good, I sacrifice my digestive system to have them. I'm no newbie to spice, but the hot stuff really drives me to spicy tears. Regardless, I keep coming back and I don't learn my lesson. Thanks for having such yummy food!

Ayam Penyet Ria tucked in the Clarendon street, South Melbourne.
We didn't find any issues to locate the restaurant :)
The restaurant had a casual looking and served an authentic Indonesian cuicine.
The place wasn't spacious so when it gets packed, it would be suffocating and be ready to change your clothes cause it will be very smelly.
The vibe and ambience wasn't the best here. The customer service was alright and it's a self service business model.

We ordered:
- Iga Penyet, Smashed Ribs ($10.50) + white rice ($2.00) for $12.50
Iga Penyet (Smashed Ribs) served with fried tofu, fried tempeh and traditional Indonesian sambal on the side.
Everything was served hot and fresh. Was very excited to find this place by chance! Although not exactly the best place to dine in terms of comfort and ambience , the food is very affordable and quite decent (nothing more than $10). Had the typical ayam penyet dish, which was alright - can't fight with the ones I had in Singapore but the sambal was definitely a hit! Gado gado was not exactly what I expected and the chicken soto was abit too salty .

Bad Service!!!! I came first and waiting for my food in my table. Then the waiter asked me to join with another people that just came and makes me not comfortable also they cooked so long. Their waiters is not nice to their customer.
Joanna Shaddai
LOVED THE CHILLI (or as indonesians say: 'sambal')!! This is the most spicy sambal in melbourne (which i love!)! Ordered the terong penyet (smashed eggplant) for myself and ayam penyet (smashed chicken) for my friend. I loved my food, although the eggplant was a little oily. My friend loved her food as well!

We ordered the martabak too! (Not in the picture) nice flavour, but texture wasn't like the martabak from indonesia (although similar).

Prepare to bring cash, minimum $25 for eftpos!
Teh Kotak
The Ayam Penyet is amazing as it'll always be, my parents enjoyed their Iga but theirs came rather late- 30 minutes late, after my sister and I had finished ours. A disappointment to us, who'd come here many times over the past few years. Come here if you really want to for the food, but be warned- the food will take up to 30 minutes to arrive and the lines are extremely long- often crowding up the whole restaurant at noon until two o'clock. Their staff don't seem to bother cleaning the dishes out the front, making it very unpleasant to watch seagulls and pigeons alike scavenging the food, making a mess of everything. But on a positive tone, the food is delish- very Indo style, just how I like it 😙
Sarah Liong
The food is exceptional but quite inconsistent at times. Sometimes the meat came out over cooked and dry but other times just perfect and juicy. The service and cleanliness need some improvement.
Happyley
Msg galore- had the chicken noodle soup and had some sort of allergic reaction that night. My neck swelled up to bright red and was extremely itchy. Food did taste nice but MSG makes everything taste nice.
Edgar Darmawan
Really nice sambal/chilli here. Tried the beef ribs with chilli and it was nicely cooked and tasty. The gado-gado (boiled veggies with peanut sauce) wasn't too good though, coming from Indonesia. Tried a little bit of the chicken and it seemed well cooked.
Michael Kucyk
Some of the worst customer service that I've ever witnessed. Was sitting at a free table (which a staff member had "cleaned" but left filthy) for 10 minutes while my wife lined up to order. I was then abruptly told to leave the table in preference for customers who had already ordered (at this stage my wife was two people away from ordering). Pathetic.
Sharifah Nafisa Syed Alwi
The best ayam penyet I have ever tested. Very fast and friendly service. The price and portion is reasonable. However the place is small and very crowded.
Jeny Amelia
been here couple of times already and never once am i disappointed with them. my go to menu here was the iga penyet (smashed ribs) and teh kotak. their iga was truly very delightful, you wouldnt be disappointed with it. come and give it a try if you've never been here before :)
and do keep in mind that their chillies are spicy, and when i say spicy, its means utterly spicy (and yes i love spicy foods!)
Putriku
The best ayam penyet & iga penyet 😍😍😍😍
The sambal is super spicy which i love !!
The place is pretty small, but its worth to wait, they do have upstairs sitting , but its pretty quick.
I love this dish, iga penyet comes with the tempe & tahu.
Kasi Metcalfe
We always leave satisfied after lunch here. Can't go past the smashed rib - crispy and tender in all the right places, fatty and juicy and the smashed chicken, also crispy, flavourful and juicy. Watch out for the sambal - super hot! Lips were on FIRE (but in a good chilli 2nd degree burn way).
Tried the Black Beef soup which had great flavours (a tonne of my favourite, kafir lime) but started to get really salty after a while so started eating it with rice which helped but couldn't finish it. But really cannot complain for the price and flavours you get here! Perfect fuel to help with your South Melb Market shop.
Thomas Tay
Food is great as usual. But no teh kotak, no es teh manis, no satay ayam, no sambal soto who knows what else they dun have. Not sure will come bk again or not.
We Nomz
Ordered the IGA penyet smashed ribs and Empal penyet smashed beef with rice. Both were delicious and beef was juicy and tender. Good portion served with side of fried tofu and soybean tempeh. Warning: REALLY HOT CHILLI served as well. Very satisfied with the meal and the place was crowded when we visited, a good sign of good food.

First time I came here I was annoyed with their pricing method. "Btw if you want rice, please spend a few extra bucks ...". That somehow felt and maybe still feels a bit shady. That aside the food is actually pretty good though somewhat smaller in portion. The chilli was the highlight. One of the spiciest chili I had with little to no sour taste. For whatever reason though, don't order the eggplant. It was one of the worst eggplant dishes that I ever had, full of oil, no taste and yet not crispy.

This is the worst customer service experience I have had- waited 15 minutes at the counter for someone to take my order. Very inefficient, poor management.

They've started a delivery service which is helpful with covid stage 4 lockdown. Check if you're on their delivery path and order online via delivery.apria.com.au . Theyre still ironing it all out so it can be a bit confusing... You can choose cash on delivery to mitigate any risk.. Their crispy flakey smashed prawns was so flavoursome... and the delicious creamy satay sauce brought a big smile to my face. Can't go wrong with free delivery but not being able to estimate whether delivery was for lunch or dinner was not fantastic. Re-heating crispy stuff in the toaster oven and other tofu and satay sauce in the microwave was fine. We'll order again :)

So close to the real thing .... acceptable for Melbourne.

Nothing much in terms of set up nor service, just adequate but colourful. Try to get those mini table upfront to avoid those unfriendly aroma from the back.

Adequate goodness on the Menu, just order from the backboard, Fish and Chips style.

Tried their specialty for lunch, "Ayam Penyet" (smashed chicken), for $12 a serve with rice it has to be 4/5 ($10 without a steam rice). Chicken breast was well made, crunchy albeit lacking of marinade taste inside. It was served with a bunch of lettuce (bad), a slice of Cucumber, a piece of warm fried tofu and cold "tempeh" (fermented soybean) it was okay, would prefer warm tempeh though. But the star of the show is its "Sambal" (home-made Chilly paste) that was just awesome, enough hotness for one Indonesian :-) and still enjoyable. It's so popular you need to pay extra for more :-) blamed it on those Indonesian Sambal munchers :-)

Anyway, I'm sure my Indonesian-ness will drive me back there for more and some of those "Soto Betawi" (Jakarta Soup), "Sayur Asam," (Javanese style Sour Soup) , etc.

Thank you for bringing it to Melbourne.

Well done to the proprietor for spreading its wings from Indonesia to Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Australia, trust that you can keep up the consistency and quality.

Dear Ria,
I am a big fan of your food. I've been there countless of times to dine in or takeaway. But when I've already double check my takeaway and it's a fact that something was missing can you please not argue and double check your own dockets and look behind you if there's something there for my orders? This did not just happen once but 3 times already. I've been paying for missing rice, missing main meals and sauces... hope you would take this comment seriously thanks...

Never disappointed every time! The chicken was nice and crispy, the Sambal was a bomb, have it with some sweet soy sauce 👍👍👍The peoblem with this place is seating, when it gets busy better order a take away. Don't forget to order a pack of Siomays when you pay, they are very tasty.
Devil In The Detail
I had the smashed chicken at RIA. Heard alot about it, so i thought I'd give it a shot. Food came out pretty quickly. I usually am not a fan when a restuarant or cafe does this, unless they a heating up a bagel for me. Chicken came out cold, rice was even colder. I was very disappointed at first, then i started to eat it - immediately i could taste the flavoursome chicken, the spicy sauce was sensational. Then i thought to myself, imagine if this was done properly. Serve at a decent temperature. This place would receive a 5. Oh well, It is what it is. It was busy, so many people must like cold food. Meh!

I've gone past this place a number of times and its always busy, so I've had this high on my list of must try restaurants. It also has a menu full of fried food so really what more can I say! Finally ordered some take out and for the price it hit the spot. We ordered the fried chicken and fried beef ribs and both were good. They were a little on the cold side but who can complain when for the price they were both tasty and I love the sambal - yes it's hot but it's delicious. I'll be back again when I'm craving fried spicy food.

Recommended by my Indonesian friend, I ordered the one called 'Iga penyet' its chunky piece of beef rib covered with some fried garlic, served with spicy sauce, also fried tofu and fermented bean which I didn't like the taste. Beef rib was so tender and easily come off the bone. Always been a regular visit when around the area.

Ayam Penyet RIA has some highly visual and bold branding that, coupled with the bustling (ethnic) lunch crowd, enticed me in one work afternoon to give it a stab. To be honest I wasn’t quite sure what I was ordering and the restaurant seemingly lives up to its moniker of “authentic Indonesian taste”. Perhaps might be a bit too authentic as I didn’t quite enjoy the dish I got, which seemed more like an assembly of components.

This has been a favorite of many international Students especially those from Indonesia looking for some familiar cuisine. Indeed it's has been a great experience dining here. Food is good and to be honest, it would be the better indon restaurants around Melbourne. Fragrant spiced chicken served with a great serving of sambal. However, do prepare yourself for a fiery meal because that chilli is one hell of an inferno. Do ask for sweet sauce to tame things down a little.

If you are looking for a good ayam penyet, this us right place for you.

This restaurant served very authentic Indonesian food. I love their Beef ribs and smashed chicken. Their beef ribs are tender and melt in your mouth when you chew them. You can buy small serve of all the soup that they sell for only $1.5 and My favourite is their Yellow chicken soup. Their sambal chilli is also the best Belacan ( Shrimp Paste ) Sambal that I found in melbourne. This place is always packed during weekend.

Another unexpected meal @Ayam Penyet RIA. It is packed on Sunday noon ( that is a good sign right). Looking at the menu and everything is under $10 which is rare to find this price range nowadays. Although we are not experts in Indonesian cuisine but we still manage to try 3 different dishes i.e. Gado Gado (Indonesian salad), The Smashed chicken and sweet and sour soup. They all are pretty good, tasty and quite big. However the peanut sauce on Gado Gado is a little too sweet for my liking but not a big deal. Service is prompt and quite friendly. Cheap and cheerful and full of Indonesian customers that show how authentic the food is. Dinning experience is all about experiment. I encourage you to try this place and let me know what you think about it.
