Review Wing Loong Chinese Restaurtant - Melbourne

Edwar Kartio
This restaurant is located right across Queen Victoria on Elizabeth Street side. We ordered the stir fry vegetable and spicy chicken chop on rice dishes. The vegetable was bland and the mushroom in the dish for some reason also bland. The spicy chicken chop have great fragrant but lacking any flavours. Portion is generous. Food - 2 Service - 6 Vibe - 6 Price - $$

Nice place to eat, Been here a couple of time. enjoy eating their seafood menu, always get fresh prawn etc. Yet, quite disappointed with their customer service sometime. There’s a time when a friend of mine that is a vegetarian come to eat with us here, He order a soup meal and ask the person in-charge whether they can make the meal suitable for a vegetarian.. The person in-charge say ‘YES, THEY CAN’ then proceed to made the order at the front cashier/Kitchen speaking in cantonese AND criticising our friends request. They are laughing at our friend.., for wanting the soup meal to be only contain vegetable and they talk to each-other how silly it is to order such thing. We all heard it loud and clear and understand every single Cantonese words they speak, when they notice we are stunt and looking at them, they just smile. Last time I ordered a cold bottle drink here, they give me an expired one.. when I tell the person in charge, he just ask me to take another bottle from the fridge that is not yet expired.. He then put the expired one back on the fridge. They really need some improvement on the customer service.

I passed by this restaurant for many times and today I finally went into the restaurant with my friends. The food is amazing! Especially for the shrimp dumplings and Steamed BBQ Pork Bun. I love them! Especially, the Century Egg Congee with Chicken (porridge) reminds me of my hometown back in China. It’s really a nice place for the traditional Chinese cuisine. I will definitely try more dishes next time!

Quick value meals. Attentive friendly service.

Great place for lunch opposite Vic Market.

A good inner city lunchtime option good dumplings and great value rice dishes. Go for the roasted duck rice at only $10.50 it is great value.

Good Cantonese style meals here. Not many left in Melbourne now. Hope they stay there for many years ...

Fast service. Friendly. Food was ok but some dishes could do with more flavour like the hainese chicken rice

Good place if you starving to taste like a homey food. It’s actually taste just okay, nothing special, but everytime i come here, i just feel like my fam cooks for me. The price is expensive if you order the meal by itself, but if you order the special menu which give you rice with any kind of vegie or meat, it just cost you around $10 and it has a proportional portion for me.

I have been here a lot of times as it is literally just across the street from the place I live in, and this restaurant is my usual go-to for takeaways.

The food is nice most of the time and the price is well-compensated with the portion. My friends more often than not order their Spicy Chicken Chop (on rice), but I think the Hokkien Fried Rice, Calamari with Black Bean Sauce, and Spinach with Century Egg are pretty nice as well.

Most of the employees are Chinese-speakers, and while I'm not trying to be racist here, this fact does make it hard for non-Chinese speakers to order something more complicated than just pointing things out on the menu books.

Service during rush hours, especially if you come in a large group with several tables, can be very confusing as well.

The service is shit that is the only thing I got in this TERRIBLE restaurant. The waiters are unfriendly and unwilling to serve the customers.

Never ever go this place I swear.
As with most other reviews I cannot disagree with their general thoughts of food and service, however I will say that this is not unlike any Hong Kong / Canto bistro in my years abroad. Tasty, bold and plentiful dishes is what they unapologetically do here. No they won't win any hipster awards for Cheap eats or service nor do they clearly don't care for it, so if you are a 'foodie' don't come here, however If you like Hong Kong bistro style food and the inevitable service that generally comes with it then you'll be fine here. So we had the steam salted chicken, beef hor fun, hot and sour soup. All tasty and exactly what I expected, even the chicken was aged which was a nice surprised (most Aussies and second gen Aussies prefer them young)
Please don't change, these restaurants are a dying breed.

Big portion food at reasonable price. Used to come here a lot during college and order their duck fried rice. Ambience is nice and loud. Customer service can be improved.

Came here a few times before. Food is cheap here with ok sizes portions. Taste is ok too. Good for if you want something simple and casual. Because there are so many Chinese restaurant in the City for similar price, therefore there a lot places you can go to. Service is not too good. 😀

Came here today with my parents just to have a simple, quick lunch. I ordered number 78 on the lunch menu which was the steamed fillet fish with vegetables on rice. The food was not presented beautifully but it was expected because of the price, only $11.50 for this huge plate of rice! It filled me up to the brink I don't think I finished it all. But the fish was extremely fresh and surprisingly tender, vegetables had a nice crunch.

Service: the service here was very unexpected. They were very nice and friendly! Greeted us when we came in and took our orders very attentively.

Overall: definitely would visit this place again and again. Very cheap meal with large proportions it's my forte.

Used to come here and order either Chicken or Pork Chop on fried rice and Iced Milk Tea. The fried chicken ribs is crunchy and salty. Portion is quite big. Ambience is quiet and relaxed.

The food is overall satisfying that there is a reason to eat there. Quick and Simple.
The place is a typically a Chinese restaurant wore out furniture, unpleasant and customer service from the old man. But nevertheless the food is somehow supporting the place and I guess people likes it.
Two pieces of advice, Don't order the Sweet & Sour Pork and do not get the old man angry.
Sylvia's POV
Cheap and tasty Chinese food. Portions are large and good for sharing. Staff are polite and friendly. Try the live seafood from the tanks at the front. Steamed fish is great.
This place can cater for large groups as there is plenty of seating and cheap drinks also.

This is my fifth time coming back to this restaurant. When ever I visit Victoria market with my family, I always tend to eat at this place. They serve very typical Chinese food, with large proportions and offer cheap prices (fantastic for students). Service was ordinary, nothing special waitresses were nice but didn't look too enthusiastic serving us. Overall they serve up good food, it is basically a "pay for what you get" type of restaurant.
Sari Tjokro
Very bad service. They spilled my food on my clothes, no compensation whatsoever. The respond is so slow and the waiters doesn't have a good manner. And somehow My Food taste terrible too, so sour.

I am having very bad day with this place and I blacklisted this restaurant.
Dimzib
The portion size here provides great value for those seeking to fill up on a Chinese fix, especially in larger groups that are also going for cheaper drinks. The staff here are moderately attentive, however the restaurant's atmosphere can feel a little cluttered and lacking in maintenance at times.
Goji
I had the fish fillet with bean curd on rice. This restaurant is not the kind of restaurant which offers large plate but small food. This restaurant is very generous, large plate and also plenty of food. I tried very hard to finish my lunch, the whole dish is quite filling and tasty.
Tiana
so bad experience. I don't know whether the chef has ever tried the food he cooked. Firstly, the foo is not fresh. The pork is smelly, and i don't know if it is expired. Besides, that seafood pot is the worst one i have ever had. I don't know how this restaurant keeps the business going on. The food is ssssso bad.
Burnet Au
Sorry to say but this is bad. I order number 41 which is roast duck and roast pork with egg rice. Instead I got roast duck and bbq pork rice. I tried to explain I don't like bbq pork to the lady but she refuse to listen and told me that it was roast pork..

Tips for ur staff
If you don't know what the difference between roast pork and bbq pork, I highly recommend you google search this

If I knew it was bbq pork I would of ordered something else.. You guess did not try to make it easy for me instead just looked at me as if I was a pest for even questioning you.

Would highly NOT recommend this place unless you don't care what you order and comes out wrong.

For a cheap eat = 4/5

If you are in town and looking for a decent place that is really cheap this is a place to try
Not many places where three people can eat for under $50 and all leave full (I am a big eater)

3.5/5 - Quality = It is not fine dining but it still tastes great
4/5 - Service = Friendly and welcoming, attentive to
3/5 - Atmosphere - Usually busy, never hard to find a seat, family friendly and suitable for groups
4/5 - Menu = Good selection of Chinese food and dumplings, You will definitely find something to eat and doesn't take long to come out.

Not hard to find , across the road Vic Market on Elisabeth St,

Thumbs Up - Recommended - Will be back

What a great place this is. I love the glass frontage which feels like you are eating in a cosy glasshouse. The food is as delicious as the restaurant is comfortable. The ginger beef fried noodles is a regular dish which is always superb. The service is friendly and you can pay by card which is a relief as most Chinese restaurants are cash only.

I ordered their steam dim sims - really enjoyed the snack.
For the main dishes, I ordered special fried rice and chicken with steamed vegetables - these dishes are to my standard.

Very average. We had pipis with xo chilli sauce and were massively underwhelmed. Same with the beef hotpot in xo chilli sauce. They kind of tasted more curry like.

Although I haven't been here in a while, I always seem to come back when I feel like a nice cheap feed. The food here is typical asian cafe style food. I've tried the salt and pepper chicken and char kuai teow from here before. The presentation isn't amazing but the food is really good and cheap! Can't go wrong.
Daniel
I ordered a fried pork chop with tomato sauce on rice, and I ended up getting a fried pork chop with sweet and sour sauce on rice. They try to imitate Hong Kong cuisine, but fail in doing so. You get what you pay for.
Anthony
Woeful. Three dishes, half of which were inedible.

They get one star because the staff were helpful finding a place for us to cater for a little kid that couldn't as easily negotiate some of the other tables. It's a shame they don't start the review numbers at zero, because they'd only get 0.5 if I had the choice.

Will NEVER go there again. I mean seriously. It was bad.

Great CNY Dinner. I went there to have dinner on the chinese new year. We ordered honey pork ribs, special fried rice, and seafood hotpot. They are quite nice.

At first, we got a waitress who barely spoke English. But then, a very friendly auntie with a good command of English quickly replaced her. At the end of our little feast, the auntie asked our opinion about the foods and offered us free bowls of sweet red bean soup for dessert. Later on, right after we paid for the bill, the auntie gave us some chinese new year's candies. All in all, we got both great foods and a pretty good service there.

Our favourite little Chinese Restaurant. We have now been there twice and I can't help salivate at the memory of the food.

On the last visit we had Hot and Sour soup, Singapore Noodles, Sweet and Sour chicken, Szechuan beef and Puerh tea. The food arrived really fast and piping hot. The waiting staff were courteous and helpful and food was super delicious with generous portion sizes.

To start with the Hot and Sour soup had just the right blend of heat and sourness. The mushrooms were nice and crunchy and the meat is nicely soft. The last time we had such nice Hot and Sour soup was in a nice little restaurant in Canberra. Till now that was the benchmark.

The Singapore Noodles are full of flavor and nicely moist but not over cooked. The sesame seeds give it a nice nutty crunchy texture to balance the smoothness of the noodles.

The Sweet and Sour chicken was made with a great sauce and nice chunky and crisp vegetables. The battered chicken was cooked to perfection. The last time I had a Sweet and Sour chicken as nice as this was at a nice restaurant in Shanghai.

The Szechuan beef was also heavenly with just the right amount of chili.

Even when we had eaten our fill we still felt like eating more more; a sure sign of just how tasty the food was.

The interior decore was not super flash but it is nevertheless pleasant and clean with clean washrooms (a good sign). The patrons are a mix of Chinese and non Chinese which is another good sign.

The icing on the cake are the very reasonable prices. Three of us ate a great meal and filled ourselves and all for $65. Isnt that unreal.

To top it off they are open daily till 11pm.

TERRIBLE. Food was bland bland BLAND. one dish we ordered said it came with broccoli but when we got it, there was no broccoli to be found, just leaves of some kind. we also had a disgusting view of a man sitting toward the back of the restaurant with his shirt up and finger in his belly button. when we went to pay, that same man was behind the register. how gross?! we were also hovered over while we were looking at the menu. I hate when I'm hovered over. I won't go back.

Bad food/. Orderd deep fried ice cream for 2 of us and was very disappointed and the manager is bit of a smartass too.

Loved the spacing of the tables in this place. Most Chinese eateries in CBD are small, space invasive, dirty n gloomy. This eatery here reminds me of Chinese eateries in USA. I had eaten in this place 3 times tis week n they had not failed me. Loved the genuine staff, environment, portion size..will be bck again n again

Good food at reasonable prices. Thought we lost this place after an fire shut it down. Food is good and reasonable in price. Great HK food as usual!

Really like food and service, however, I think they might use MsG - I hope not

Best Chinese food I have found in the CBD. Wonton soup is amazing and dumplings are great too, fried rice is best I've tasted. This is my regular take out restaurant!!!

Used to be Nam Loong in Chinatown. Good to see the old-school Cantonese fare back again. They used to be Nam Loong in Chinatown before the shop burnt down.

Simple, comforting Cantonese style food.

OK for a quick noodle meal. An Asian noodle dish makes a decent dinner at work. They’re filling, have lots of carbs to ward off hunger, and there’s usually enough meat and veg to allow me to convince myself that I’ve eaten something nutritious, instead of pizza or a burger. And noodle shops tend to dish stuff out quickly, which is crucial when one has to get back to a hospital ward within a limited time.

On those measures, I approve of the Hokkien noodles I had at Wing Loong. They had my takeaway tub ready within 5 minutes of when I walked in to order. The portion was slightly bigger than other takeaway noodle shops -- it was in a somewhat deeper plastic container instead of the 5 cm-high ones you generally get. The noodles stayed hot even after I caught a tram back to where I was working at the Royal Melbourne. Plus Wing Loong was open on Sunday at dinner time -- lots of places aren’t.

As for the flavour, it’s hard to differentiate between most versions of Hokkien noodles. The noodles themselves were cooked properly, with a bit of rubbery al dente tooth feel. The sauce was tasty, not too spicy, not so much of it that the dish came out wet. I’ve had better beef in Asian noodles -- the medal-sized pieces were on the tough side. Wing Loong has these tongue-shaped pieces of rubbery white fake-fish stuff as the seafood element, along with a few minuscule prawns. I could have done without the surimi stuff, because I don’t like eating something so unnatural, but overall it was your basic average noodle experience.

Such a convenient location not simply because tram stop is right in front, but also easy parking. Food there is absolutely delicious and cheap, not to mention free wifi and waiting time is short. Absolutely recommend the salt and pepper calamari, combination fried noodles, XO fried rice or any fried rice actually (all under 10!) . As for desserts, nothing beats the icecream and banana fritter, and friend icecream. Ice chocolate is to die for! Friendly service! Definitely coming here for my birthday next year :)

Amazing Xiao Long Bao and vegetarian dumplings! Good service, great value. Will be coming back!

Service was super quick however the food was average . The pan fried dumplings tasted a bit 'off'. it was still raw inside and slimey. When I informed the waiter, a lady came out and explained that's how it's meant to be , expecting me to eat them. The moment I started taking photos of my dumplings, she offered to make me fresh ones!

Fast Service, Yummy Food at Cheap prices. It's strange to see how this restaurant isn't as packed as some other asian restaurants . As a chinese I have to say cantonese style cuisine is really good and much better than some of the restaurants in Chinatown. There's free WIFI, so I always come here to chill out and sometimes do work. Though decor isn't fancy and staff at least appear to be a bit more happier and less grumpy compared to the Malaysian restaurant just down the road. I highly recommend this place even as a Chinese.

Cheap yummy meals!. A huge fan of Wing Loong. Food tastes delicious here, especially the combination fried noodles. Not to mention it is relatively cheap and in a convenient location. It is very close to my uni and I pop in for lunch when I have a short break.
Would recommend this restaurant to people who love fast and cheap Chinese food. :D

Used to be Lok Lok...Much better as Wing Loong!. I think this place has new management & obviously a new trading name, great place for no fuss Chinese food with fast service. Really cheap and good value. The ciao long boa had a lot of soup, soon good! The owner/manager was very friendly & helpful

Wing Loong restaurant burnt down 7th December 2010. http://bit.ly/hd0uct Not sure if they will re-open.

Complimentary tea. Super fast service. Fluorescent specials and banquet menus. Add to that $4 wine and beer and tasty food. What more could you ask for. Aloe and lycee slushies? You got it. Been going to this place for years but only just got my iPhone to give it a review. I love the serving size of the fried rice and it only costs $6.50.
Keith Meure
My favourite Hongkie style eatery. Cheap and quick but not for those expecting presentation and style! Been going since 2002! Always have Char Sieu w sieu yok chow faan dài.

Great, Cheap Meals!. Wing Loong is one of our favourites!

Enjoy great meals from only $7, and complimentary tea.

The meals are quick too, so you can get in and out fast, if you are in a hurry.

Complimentary tea. Super fast service. Fluorescent menus for specials and banquets. $4 wine and beer. And tasty food.

We ended up at Wing Loong after not making it into the Supper Inn due to a huge queue all the way down to the stairs to the street and BYO error (no beer - even Mountain Goat) elsewhere...
