Craving for some indonesian food and decided to try this restaurant. The iga and dendeng sambel ijo were so tasty and rich in flavour. They also sold martabak. It was an indonesian pancake but a bit thicker. I am not sure if they made it by themselves or other people made it for them. However, their martabak was not as impressive as their iga and dendeng. It was too salty and their texture was too soft and not chewy. After all, it was a good place if you want tp try indonesian food. I also heard that their mie ayam was good.

Ordered my fave menu in Fat Oma: chicken satay.
Chicken skewers with delicious peanut and sweet soy sauce leave great taste on my tongue.
I've also tried mie ayam, baso malang, nasi goreng, roti bakar, nasi oma, and sop buntut.. All is good. As Indonesian, I can say the food taste is quite authentic.
In addition, the place atmosphere is good for catching up with friends. Will come back.
Amazing food! I ordered empal cabe ijo, and my husband ordered iga balado.
Superrrrr yummy food.
Nice service. Located in the heart of CBD.
Sure i'll be back soon โค๏ธ
Oma knows it best - apparently. If you love Indonesian food in a chill venue with friendly service and at great prices, this is for you. A small but very hearty menu impresses with more than decent servings and great flavours. It felt like going on a journey to Indonesia without even leaving the heart of Melbourne's CBD. Highly recommend the Rendang, which packs a punch of spices and is just falling apart. Definitely coming back more regularly. Seb
Not a bad place to get Indonesian food in the city. I'm a massive fan of Soto Mie so I was glad to see that on the menu. Sure, it doesn't taste like the ones I've had in Jakarta and the soup was lacking in the punchy flavour department but, it was still quite decent. The mie ayam wasn't too bad either.
I'm half Indonesian and always loved going to Indonesia for vacations just for the food.
This place is one of the new modernised spots for indonesian food.
Was hesitant to try it but surely wasn't dissappointed. Cheap prices and good food.
Ordered Mie ayam and Soto Mie, satay to share and extra sambal terasi. Mie ayam was so and so but the soto was slightly better, tasted like a homemade meal my mum would make. Ive had better satay but this place offered a more indonesian-streetfood kind of feel instead of the westernised satay you'll find in most places nowadays.
Would come back again and would recommend this place to people that want to try Indo food.
Edit:
Returned today to try the Nasi Oma which is a combo dish. Was not dissapointed. Great comfort food and very filling.
our fav here is the chicken balado. the place is quite small, but food is 3.9/5 . the sambal is so good. staffs were friendly. food was quick but unfortunately cash only, so i need to cash out before i come.
Tried the soto mie. Being and Indonesian, I found the taste was so so. But I haven't tried their other foodstuff.
Another minus point is that there's only a set of condiments and a box of tissue to share with all the others. I think it would be nice to have it on every table.
I love this indo restaurant !! it taste really good๐๐ผ and the service was good too despite the busy timing!! I love the ayam belado and bakmi ayam!!
Been here quite few times and noticed their food tastes are not in same consistency except bakso malang. I like their bakso malang, more delicious than the one in Indonesia.
Delicious! We got the fried rice, the chicken skewers, the dengdeng cab ijo and the asinan cobr. We would definitely come back and am looking forward to trying the rest of the food. The chicken had great grill taste, the beef was the right amount of spicy and the fried rice was a perfect accompaniment.
I was following one of this ladies blog in insta and this place is featured in her account. The food photo looked good and I was enticed. I came here for lunch and ordered their fried rice. You must bring cash as they don't accept anything else. Anyways, the portion was huge! It was also very tasty. It is a small place but the staff are friendly.
Simple home-style food with lots of flavour. Their tender sliced beef with green chilli sambal is a must try! The meat was so tender yet moist. One spoonful of rice, succulent beef and hot sambal will make you keep going for more.
Outstanding! Having lived in Indonesia for over two years I feel I can sniff out a good Indonesian restaurant. Alas, almost all Indonesian restaurants in the Melbourne CBD have done a proverbial limbo under the minimum standards. Then Fat Oma popped up in Swanston Street. I have been 10 times now and can recommend the Nasi Oma, Rendang and Nasi Goreng. It's often busy now, I guess word has gotten around that this is comfortably the superior Indonesian restaurant in the CBD, perhaps all of Victoria. Come! But bring cash...no card facilities.
Great food and friendly staff! The Iga Balado was delish, and the Ayam Special was a real treat. Well worth the visit for genuine Indonesian if you're in the CBD ๐๐ผ
Juz eaten but couldnt resist when i pass this new resto, they have some of my fav snacks so thought i should give it a try and wasnt disaapointed!
Their bakso goreng (fried meatball) isnt how its supposed to be, and rather bland but the chilli was awesome. Roti bakar (toast with grated cheese, choco and condensed milk) was yum! My friend loved it so much and ordered the 2nd one. Tahu Gejrot was very dissapointing, i know that its hard as they supposed to make it last minute, so the chef rather boiled all the sauce which made the taste just plain wrong and warm (since when tahu gejrot served warm??) and last was rujak, man.... i think this is the best rujak ive eaten in Melbourne, just one word to describe it, perfect. As long as they are consistent with it, ill always go back for their rujak. (And definitely try their other food as well)
Quick casual eatery for Indonesian food where you order at the counter, collect your own cutlery and wait a short while for the food to arrive. The wait staff are friendly and happy to help. I've been with my Indonesian colleague twice now for lunch and we've enjoyed both times. First time I had the Ayam Belado and found the grilled chicken tasty and the sauce fiery but delicious. This time I had the Nasi Oma which is really a bit of everything; a chicken skewer that had a great smoky chargrilled flavour, rendang which was meaty and flavoursome and egg with the sambal sauce. The tangy pickles helped cut through some of the sauce and richness of the rendang.
Great simple food that is fresh and very tasty ... interesting flavours. Service is very friendly and it is extremely economical. The salad was authentic Indonesian.
New Indonesian place, simple deco. Very simple menu but they do it very very well. The fried rice is the bomb! And the toast was very interesting! Haha
Very delicious food, but limited choices and cramped space. Not very authentic, but tasty nevertheless. Tried the Nasi Oma. Probably the best beef rendang I've ever tried!!! Definitely recommended.
The satay chicken and the sambal egg were good too.
Fat Oma has good Indonesian food but don't expect authenticity. They are definitely westernised to cater the local taste. It's not necessarily a bad thing though as I quite enjoy the food.
Delicious but a bit spicy. I guess most of Indonesian dishes are spicy. The service was prompt. The portion was rather small. Will I go back? Not sure.
A casual dining place for indonesian food where you order food at the counter and pick up your own cutlery and water. Highlight was the salad with fruit and vegetables in a tangy rojak type sauce, which was delicious. The Grilled chicken was served with an amazing chilli sauce, which brought me back to Southeast Asia. *)
Had their Sate Ayam, Gado Gado and Roti Bakar. The Sate Ayam was decent as the chicken was tender while the peanut sauce was flavoursome. The Gado Gado was also great as the sauce had a slight spiciness, which was sufficient to lift the flavours and make the dish appetising. Last but not least, the Roti Bakar was average as I felt that the bread was a tad rubbery even though the combination of cheese, chocolate sprinkles and condensed milk was novel.
We came here at about 8.30pm on a Friday evening and ordered Ayam Balado and the Nasi Oma, both of which were really delicious. The only thing that was disappointing was the noise-level. There were two large groups that were noisy, made worse by the hard surfaces all over the restaurant.
Ordered Iga balado (beef ribs with chunky sambal sauce and tofu and tempeh) and rice to go with it. It was surprisingly satisfying. The amount of beef ribs given was just nice, they were tender with slight fatty bits to give the indulgence experience. The special for that day was ayam bakar + sambal terasi, grilled chicken with really spicy chilli. Overall, pretty satisfied with our dinner. Simple place, simple food.
Service was impeccable, the girl serving and basically doing everything from front of house was amazing. 10/10
Mie Ayam - was amazing. Noodles on point. Soup on point. Mushrooms and chicken on point. 8.5/10
Bakso Malang - soup was a bit too salty for my liking. Noodles however, were amazing. The bakso (beef balls) were to die for. The fried wonton were very nice, you get two of them as well. Stuffed tofu with beef meat was also good, however, lacked a bit of flavour. The beef balls get a 10/10. But the soup let down the overall meal. 8/10
Would definitely recommend this place to others. I will be back here soon with friends. Thank you for a great Indonesian cuisine experience, Fat Oma!
I ordered iga balado and it was delicious, spicy and tender on the other hand my husband ate mie ayam and he said its ok, no complaints or compliment.
The place ia clean and the service was good, will come back to try other food
Love the nasi oma sooooo much..... Taste so yummy, got everything in a plate, mie ayam just remind me with my hometown food, asinan bogor the best ones and you hardly find in other restaurant with authentic krupuk mie with drizzle of tasty palm sugar. Overalls the food are amazing. Also ayam bakar one of my favorite...
I am impressed by FO's simplicity, both in design and menu. Only about eight core dishes, along with drinks, complemented with quite authentic sauces that isn't backing down in spiciness. The portions were also as you'd expect in Jakarta, quaintly small, but defiantly didn't lack in flavor. My mie ayam (chicken noodle) had bite, and the ayam bakar (grilled chicken) was succulent. This is an exemplary and smart way to present Indonesia's cuisine and commence a restaurant business. A welcome addition to the food scene and a much needed competition to the Nelayan institution across the road.
Cant stop eating at Fat Oma ๐ป๐ป๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ฉ My favorites are the Mie Ayam, Roti Bakar & Bakso Malang! SO GOODDD ๐ Great customer service as well, all so friendly!! ๐โบ๏ธ
the food was delicious, we had iga balado, asinan bogor, mie ayam, nasi oma, tahu gejrot and rujak buah.
the sambal is very nice too.. we will come back here again for sure.
the price also quite reasonable for the portion.
THE IGA BALADO IS HEAVENLY GOOD! My boyfriend came here when it just opened a couple of weeks before, and he thought it was really good so he brought my housemates and me here today. The place looks small but the food is definitely worth the price, not to mention the speedy service they offer even though it was packed with customers. The chunky chilli and the meat match well and I'd never had something good like this in any Indon cuisine. My boyfriend had the Nasi Oma and he really liked the rendang which is packed with rich aroma. My housemates ordered the Ayam Balado and Mie Ayam, the Ayam Balado is similar to what you can find in a typical Indon restaurant but the the Mie Ayam is lack of flavour (I guess we are meant to add the chilli to enhance the taste but my housemate's spicy tolerance is a little low so we didn't add that) ย To sum up, I definitely recommend this place :)
Fat oma trully delivers the Indonesian taste.
We tried bakso malang, iga balado, rujak buah n mie ayam. Iga balado & rujak buah are my favorite.
Definitely gonna go there next time for iga balado.
Delicious! We ordered Nasi Oma and the beef ribs and they are simply delicious. Cook time is a bit slow though, but apart from that there's no issues. Will definitely come back again!
Second time to the shop, can't stop coming back. The food here is yummy and authentic, everytime I come here it takes me back to walking the streets of Jakarta and stopping by the many small warongs for an epic meal.
Their Mie Ayam are an absolute delight especially on a cold rainy Melbournian night. The noodles are tender and springy, and the warm flavourful soup is exactly what you need to take away any "galau" (depressed) feelings. I wish they had a big boiling pot of the soup parked right out the front of their shop to lure hungry bypassers, as I for one am quite easily snared. ๐
Go also for their Iga Balado (Balado beef ribs). Despite the ample chillis all over the top, its actually not that spicy, but sure packs a mouthful of flavour. The iga (beef ribs) are slow cooked to perfection to the point it simply melts in your mouth. Make sure you also give it a healthy drizzle of some kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) on the rice to give it a sweet, savoury balance. I have to admit, I'll need to bring a bib next time I come here, I just cannot resist eating those tender beef ribs with my bare hands and making a mess all over myself. ๐
Loving this new trendy warong. Hoping they do UberEATS or other food delivery as I can see myself happily tucking away on Indonesian goodness.
I'm a huge fan of their iga balado (beef ribs with sambal). Moist and tender beef served with mouth watering sambal. My lunch couldn't be better! The shop has nice ambience and friendly staffs as well :)
Can't hold myself eating the satay first before taking the photo HAHAHA anyway Nasi Oma is a must try menu if you come to Fat Oma. The chicken satay is tasty, as well as the rendang.
Indonesia shop in Melbourne city, first time I've tried Mie Ayam dried ramen noodle soup and satay ayam chicken stay skewer was so delicious. The pricey is cheap. I definitely back to try another dish in here.
delicious food: i had the dendeng (beef and green chilli sambal), the beef was great and the paste was decent which works well together. Friendly floor staff, and the place is trendy as well. definitely going back there for a second round.
Great tasting Indonesian food that fulfil your cravings! Excellent location too. I love the Iga Balado, it's amazing and it's a must try dish! Can't recommend Iga Balado enough ๐๐ป
Big hooray to the new addition of Indonesian food in CBD. Didn't manage to try most its main menu yet as they're in soft opening when we visited. Bakmi tasted good with springy noodle texture. Tried its tempe and tahu bacem, they're so good. Gadogado was a bit too sweet. Will be back to try the nasgor and miegor. They better be good
Finally have the indo food located on Swanston street area And it's easier to spotted! Been here for third times with my buddy ! Love the foods here ! Especially mie ayam and IGA ! Price reasonable! We'll be back again n again !
Been here twice!
I've finally found an Indonesian restaurant that suit my taste๐
I will recommend you to try their beef rendang and chicken satay!
Try it and you'll absolutely ask for more๐
Just had the Mie Ayam and i really enjoyed its layered flavours, like the soup tasted fresh and each ingredient was memorable, gonna be back for sure.
Wanting to see how this new indonesian restaurant will differ from others.
Had the iga balado, chicken noodle, and crispy skin beef balls.
The beef balls are very bland, nothing amazing.
Love the iga balado, the chilli is not too spicy which is a relief.
The chicken noodle is nice but my partner found it a bit too salty.
Overall, interesting to see this indonesian restaurant tone down its spicy level, but i think it needs something new or it will end up just being another indonesian restaurant.
Had the Iga Balado, Tahu Gejrot and Bakso Malang. Tahu gejrot was okay-ish while the Iga Balado and esp the Bakso Malang were delish!! Will be back to try the Soto Mie soon!!
It's a little piece of Indonesia right in Melbourne. Simple, tasty, inexpensive and cheerful. The food was many of the Indonesian favs, done well. Staff are super friendly and it's overall an easy going place to dine.
We're so glad that a new Indonesian restaurant can be found in CBD! We've been doing take aways for 2 days in a row! First time we only tried the Mie ayam and it was yummy! Then we came back the next day and tried Tahu Gejrot, Iga balado and Sate ayam. All yummy! We'll definitely back for more. Well done Fat Oma!
The bakso malang was really good and the best bakso I've eaten in Melbourne. I ordered fried chicken, satay and marinated Tempe which were good too. Definitely will be back again.
A solid 5* Indonesian food. A bit pricey compared to other Indonesian around CBD but very well worth it.
Ordered their "Nasi Oma" and Dendeng Cabe Hijau (add 2$ for jasmine rice)". Both are extremely nice.
Their Nasi Oma has this extremely nice peanut sauce with chicken satay. This peanut sauce is D E L I C I O U S. The Rendang is very tender and well marinated.
Dendeng Cabe is similar with the rendang. Very tender and well made.
Service is also solid 5*.
Overall 4 out of 5. A slight price reduction will change my review to 5*!
One of my favourite Indonesian restaurants in the city. Their chicken noodle is very good!
Excellent food! My partner and I ordered the Nasi Goreng, Beef Rendang and satay chicken skewers, and it all tasted amazing. The beef was really tender and very tasty. Nasi Goreng was probably the best I've had and a really good serving size. Chicken skewers were nicely cooked with a great flavour. A small place, but not too crowded and the food came out pretty quickly.
