left my family and I so hungry due to lack of proper service from the workers. we were looking forward to fish and chips on the beach and had to resort to maccas because we were incessantly ignored after having our order taken. the workers of this store need to learn to properly communicate with customers over the phone and in store. they didnt even take our name when they took our order! just so unprofessional and simply not good enough :(

Came here for the first time during the weekend, would go again? Unfortunately not, For the price you pay the quality doesnt match, My whiting fish was decent, when it came to the chips they were blue on the inside. This is an indicator that the food is not fresh. Staff were to themselves and not very helpful. It wasnt a BAD experience per se, I'd just never come here again

I have been going to Old Salt Burger for roughly 7 years now and ordering the Old Salt Burger without onion or pineapple. I have eaten a lot of burgers from a lot of different places, but this burger is objectively my favourite. It is not on any of the delivery apps, surrounded by other "fancier" fish and chip and burger shops and doesn't even have it's own website.<br/>Nevertheless, this humble fish and chip shop produces without fail, the same tried and true, deliciousness ever squeezed between 2 sesame seed buns.

Been very satisfied with the food here. Potato cakes, battered flake, garden salad, chips, dim sims all good for a reasonable price. The burger with the lot was one of the best fish and chip shop burgers I've ever had. Service is fine although some of the cooks look very grumpy haha. I would recommend!

The Old Salt is a no frills standard fish and chips shop that serves up a descent meal at a reasonable price. It’s not going to knock your socks off but it also isn’t going to let you down. Good alternative when other places are busy. Give them a go.

Really bad food and terrible service. Read a few review saying new owner and things have changed. Tried anyway but it was a mistake. Chips were soggy and very little. Fish was tiny and dry. The man was serving me and suddenly picked up the phone and started taking orders without saying anything. He did this to all other customers as well. Definitely not worth coming back.

I used to love this place but will never return after seeing how terrible it’s become under the new management. Shocked to see these reviews but suspect it’s due to change in ownership! This has to be high on the list of a horrible experience! Warm night in the city and decided to try this place as hunky dory’s was busy. About 8 customers waiting for there meal and our order took 45 minutes for fried fish and chips! They couldn’t understand English! Every order was wrong as each customer had to send it back. The only two people working kept arguing in what I assume was Chinese the whole time as they couldn’t keep up! The fish was battered and fried left out on the rack to get cold and when someone ordered it would it would then get deep fried again. No apology, no customer service at all, long wait and were clearly new and sooo out of there depth. Customers were walking in and walking out as they could see how dysfunctional it was. Nothing like I have ever seen before. Customers were even saying that they would never return but they couldn’t even understand to even give a crap. What a shame! Given the previous positive reviews if the older owners saw the new state of affairs they would be horrified! Next time back to hunky dory’s...

Their food and service used to be a LOT better. They served excellent fish burger and chips, they used to build their burgers using spoon for the sauces. After several months of not going there, today went there again with my colleagues and found out a whole new management team. Now we basically had zero service (had to repeat our order multiple times) and the food quality is FAR worse. The chips are crap and the burger was low-to-average burger. So disappointed with the new management.

It was the first sunny and warm Sunday for months so decided to have some take away fish and chips and go and sit by the sea.<br/>I asked for battered grenadier and got crumbed which was and chewy undercooked and oily and basically inedible. There was no dressing on the salad which was lumped in with al the hot food so was warm and lettuce wilting!!<br/>My husband had battered flake - the batter was very thick and oily and fish very overlooked ( probably twice cooked). The only saving grace was that the chips were good. <br/>We have been here before a few years ago. It appears under different management. <br/>It was probably one the worst fish and chips I have ever had. <br/>We will not be back.

I have a few friends say this is the best fish n chips in Port Melbourne, I wasn't impressed. Fish is good but burgers are better. The venue is tiny so if it is cold I'd recommend takeaway. Considering the pricing there are better options in the area.

A rather noisy place to have your food in. Not because of the customers but the chatty staffs and the way they cooked. I don't mind it, i think it adds character to the place. I had fish and chips pack and it was great, especially the fish. The batter was thick and looked plain but the taste was awesome. Didnt try the burger but would want to try it one day

Hands down the best fish and chips in Port Melbourne. They do an awesome fish wrap which has never disappointed. They're burgers are fantastic, everything is fresh and not soaked in oil. Service is great, staff are really friendly.

For years this place has delivered the goods every time. And in all those years, nothing's changed. The staff are still friendly as ever (such nice people), the service is still quick, and the chips are still to die for.<br/><br/>Well, one thing has changed. Their new burger absolutely kicks ass.<br/><br/>They've changed from your usual fish and chip shop style burger and gone for an American style burger which literally melts in your hands the minute you pick it up. Juices flow from the big beef patty down your fingers as it melts in your mouth once you take a bite.<br/><br/>I honestly forgot the name of the burger, but it is around $9 and is worth the bump up to $12.50 when you ask for double meat and double bacon (if you eat bacon). <br/><br/>In all the years I've lived in Port Melbourne (my whole life), this is by far the best burger Bay Street has to offer (or anywhere in Port Melbourne for that matter). <br/><br/>Next time you're at Old Salt, make sure you ask for this burger! Old salt in a part of town that is rather devoid of genuine and honest fish and chip places. But have you tried the burgers??? Best burgers by far and wide for a chippy joint and the fish is always fresh and the chips on point every day. Make sure if you're heading beach side that you check this joint out, and make sure you get a dimmy too.

Not impressed by this fish & chip shop.<br/>I asked for chips, mixed meat and garlic sauce souvaliki - nice and simple not too hard to ask - I get home and they've added tomato and lettuce! Pissed me off because I hate tomato, if they're going to add unwanted ingredients onto someone's meal at least maybe mention it.<br/>Also just to add - the souvlaki tasted like curry, pure curry!! What the hell!!!<br/>They also don't sell gravy at this place - what fish & chip shop don't sell gravy!?<br/>Wouldn't recommend it & wouldn't go there again<br/>1.5/5

Delicious!. Beautiful fresh fish and crisp chips....but do yourself a favour and try one of the burgers!<br/><br/>The double beef is amazing! Be warned though that you'll need a big appetite and won't need any sides! The burgers will take you back to the good old days of Milk Bar burgers. <br/><br/>Friendly service too. Expect a line on a Friday night - that's how good these guys are!

Highly Disappointing. Just moved to the area & have to say this was highly disappointing. Dry, bland fish & chips- could have been jazzed up by tartar sauce.... But they forgot it! Fish burger- can't believe fish could be so tasteless. Chips- couldn't even fill up on those there was so little! Off to the fish & chip shop round the corner- thankfully it's great!

Amazing !!! Came here with my children after being caught in the rain we ducked in for a quick bite. We loved the food and even better service. The guys were friendly, helpful and very accommodating ( having two kids sitting at the bench constantly asking them questions ). Have already made plans to head back with friends on the weekend. Great old school fish and chips with a modern twist. The burger also was divine. 10/10 guys. Well done !

Best Burgers in Melbourne. We make the trek to this Port Melbourne landmark most weeks as we know no matter what we choose it will be of the best quality, fresh and flavoursome. The burger with the lot is amazing, as is the fish burger and the souvlakis are out of this world and the chips are amongst the best I have ever had. Prices are good and service is great. It can get busy on a Friday and Saturday night, which is a testament to it's popularity, but well worth the wait.

Best Fish & Chips. If you want to never be disappointed in buying fish and chips, head to the Old Salt. I have the fish once a fortnight and it is perfection. Unlike Hunky Dory's and Delish Fish whose fish are swimming in batter the Old Salt salt makes authentic fish and chips.
