Until the Metro tunnel works re-open Scott Alley you may have to search for this little business, lurking as it does behind a creperie, but the hunt is worth it.

Highlight for me is the baguette in which the Bahn Mi are served. It is light, slightly sweet with a crust that magically combines almost ethereal crispness with chew. Fillings vary, but all offers good traditional flavour with freshness. Both pork options are good, but sliced pork is often filled a little more generously than the crispy variety.

Everything is freshly prepared and the textures and taste reflect this.

Great banh mi with roasted pork, taste mostly similar to Vietnamese one, yet $9 quite overpriced comparing to the same quality in other stores.

The place was kinda hidden and there were just a few seats but really nice staffs.

Got the crispy pork banh mi and they were yummzzzz The bun was fresh and crispy, the pork has a nice crispy skin too! And the banh mi was just nicely balanced, filling portion too. Definitely recommended!

follow for more! 🌸

I’d say this is the best banh mi I’ve had in the cbd. I had the grilled pork and it was delicious. The baguettes have an extra layer of crunch over the top (almost like a brioche), and the texture and crunchiness is perfect. The filling was a good ratio and the carrot didn’t make it soggy. While there, Stephanie was preparing a dish for a regular customer, and I enquired as to what it was. A few minutes later, she came past and gave me a little sample of the sticky rice dish she had prepared - now that’s service with a smile! Will definitely go back for another banh mi!

I have gone past this alley so many times and never knew that there is a small Vietnamese restaurant tucked into the corner and serving some amazing Bahn Mi. This place is located in Scott Alley on Flinders Lane. It is a small place with a few seats inside the restaurant and a few outside. You can see everything being prepared fresh right in front of you. I ordered a Grilled Chicken on Rice Vermicelli and a Crispy Pork Baguette. The service was very quick.

As many others have said, the banh mi is delicious especially the sweet and crunchiness of the bread. Strongly recommend trying their combo meals if you want to try their pho as well.

Best banhmi in the CBD (imho).
I've revisited numerious times, and I the experience and quality is still consistent.
The tiger rolls have this buttery crispy surface and it provides an extra textural layer to the soft baguette underneath.

The egg mayo is creamy and the combined with the pate, it's absolutely delicious.

I had the grilled pork banh mi ($7) and with a rice paper roll, the meal deal was $10. I think an extra $3 is a bit much for 1 roll, maybe 2 would be better.

You have to sort of hunt for this place a bit. It's hidden in an alleyway off Flinders Lane and the shop itself is tiny but filled with the familiar banh mi aromas.

We had the crazy delish crispy pork and the good as grilled chicken. Both were full of flavour. The roll was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The pork remained crispy and the chicken was grilled well.

A really nice spot for a quick bite!

Discovering great eats in alley ways in Melbourne is always fun! Hearbaker Bun Mee is a cute little shop hidden at the end of Scott Alley and is well worth the visit!

🔆LOCATION🔆
Scott Alley is a small laneway located off Flinders Lane, near Swanston Street corner.
I used to walk through Scott Alley via arcade as quick short cut to Flinders Station, but now that block has been demolished and is now a construction site, it is now a dead end alley but will some good hidden eats! :)

🔆SERVICE🔆
The ladies working at Heartbaker Bun Mee are very friendly and helpful.  Once you place order, you get a ticketed number. As the shop is very small, people have to stand outside to wait.

There are 2 tables inside for max 4 seating capacity as well as small bar table area which can set max 3 people. Outside there are 2 tables that can set up to 4 people.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
They have a variety of Vietnamese baguette, rice paper rolles, rice noodles and salad bowls on their menu. However today, I had craving for crispy roast pork so I ordered:

Crazy Delish Crispy Pork - egg butter, carrots daikon pickles, cucumber, spring onion, coriander, hoisin sauce, fresh chilli, $9.00

🔆VERDICT🔆
They have an oven on their back counter which they  use to heat up the baguette bread roll so that it is crispy and also warm to eat ! Love their bread its delicious! The Crazy Dlish Crispy Pork Roll is just as the name describe! It is delicious! The flavours are there and the pork is juicy and has the crispy skin. Cannot fault!  Although $9.00 is very pricy for a Banh Mi, it's more modern fusion take on the traditional Vietnamese Bahn Mi. I don't always like to pay so much, but for this at Heartbaker, I am happy to pay for it given its great taste and very decent portion size.

I think the only comment I would like to make is that picture menu's with the special deals on the front window of the shop is very hard to view especially when the tables at the front has customers seated.

No doubt I will be back again for more baguette fix! =)

Speaking as a self-proclaimed banh mi expert, this place definitely has the best banh mi in Melbourne cbd. The roll itself is buttery, flaky. Pork is crispy and delicious. Thanks for a delicious, quick fix
Why 4 star rating. Not a fan of their iced coffee which ticks off one star.

A nice hidden gem in Melbourne laneways. Definitely worth to try!

Highly recommend Jurassic bun Mee, with warm crispy tiger roles, creamy egg butter, pate and perfect Asian style sticky grilled pork, coriander, chilli and few drops of soy sauce, it is indeed a bun Mee heaven!

Well it is defiantly not a traditional Vietnamese pork role you can get for $4 or more in the Vietnamese suburbs but it is quite affordable for a quick and superb lunch in the CBD area. EFTPOS is available with $0.20 surcharge if lower than $10.

The best banh mi I’ve had in the CBD in a long long time! The banh mi are not really traditional but are super tasty! I ordered the Jurassic and expected just cold cuts of meat, but was surprised that the crispy bread roll was filled with a slice of ham, as well as plenty of roast pork. Can’t wait to come back for lunch again.

OMG. I really can’t wait to go back. I had the crispy pork roll and it was so damn good. Seriously, brilliant.
Service was quick and easy. It’s also pretty cool watching the metro project while you wait.

It seems like every time I crave for a bahn mi, the place is about to close. When I visited this one, I was reluctant to come in but the staff kindly invited me in. My friend recommended this to me because the bread they use is a bit different, like the top of pineapple bun kind of bread and I love it too.

Living in Melbourne for a year now just wishing that a good Vietnamese place would open nearby, well finally my prayers were answered.
While it may not be the most traditional Vietnamese place it definitely is one of the best.
The Jurassic Classic bun mee is to die for and easily is the best roll of any kind that I have had during my time here in Melbourne.
Service is always friendly and the food is always on point.

I have returned and will return as often as I can!

With over 100 reviews since 2015, this is my first 5 star.

Best place to get banh mi! I liked it more than the famous place in footscray tho the price points are different but you get more portion on Heartbaker. Tried the crispy pork filling and it was crunchy and delicious. Friendly staff as well.
Would really like to try other fillings and also their rice paper rolls!

I love exploring Melbournes laneways and today I did it again. And I found this Vietnamese place, woo hoo!

I called into Heartbaker cafe this morning and I ordered a Grade A Pulled Pork roll w salad. I tried to order a crispy pork roll but the pork wasn't ready.

The service was friendly and everything is made to order.

My bun was really crispy and fresh. Yummo lol. The pork was delicious. And the salad fresh and tasty too.

This place is a must visit if you like great value and delicious Vietnamese food.

rice paper roll (the Korean ipig) was so flavourful that I didn't even dip it in the sauce it came with, which is incredible because rice paper rolls, even the "good ones" are bland garbage without a dipping sauce. the texture was great too, better than any other of the many Viet places I have tried both in the city and in footscray.

the roll was great too, I got the crispy pork. tasty as crispy pork with a great butter and the roll is nice and crunchy and has this interesting crust almost as if it was lightly fried in butter to make it crispy, so good.

The staffs are polite and friendly, I have been there 3 times last week, they toast the bread and make it freshly. The first time I bought was the crispy pork bun, When I told the staff I would keep the bun for later, she suggested me to order the bbq pork instead and refunded $1 to me immediately. I was really impressed by their amazing service and hope more and more people would recognise this little shop :)))

Had a very pleasant meal here this morning.  Their tofu and vegie banh mi options were delicious.  They offered a 20% discount for the whole bill, I'm guessing to drum up business since they are new.  Grab it while it's still on!
