Positives - chef was really really accommodating. My partner is a vegetarian. Thankfully they were very honest and told us that none of the curry was vegetarian friendly as they contained prawn paste. The chef happily offered to customise a dish with fried tempeh in sweet and spicy sauce, which was absolutely delicious. The nasi Padang there looked pretty delicious too, with lots of options available and decently priced.

Not so good - the Ayam Bakar (grilled chicken) I ordered was not cooked thoroughly. They were, however, very apologetic and offered to give me a new piece. Food also took a while to arrive.

Will come back to try other dishes and nasi padang

The place was empty when we got in, with quite lots of seats inside. The girl serving us was just really nice, explaining things to us patiently. The waiting time for some cooked food were however was bit long, I think they need more chefs :')

Beef rendang was great, for the price it's really worth it. The flavour was there, it's tender and flavorsome so I'd definitely recommend it.

Corn fritters and fried stuffed tofu were delishhh but they were unfortunately bit too oily.

Bakso tahu (tofu meatballs) were okay, the soup was bit too salty and noodles were bit soft but the meatballs were enjoyable.

Ikan Bakar (grilled fish) was worth it for its price and it tasted pretty good and similar to what I get back home. It just took too long to come out :')

Also got kale curry (gulai) which although not authentic, was a pretty good dupe for daun ubi lol.

Overall I was pretty satisfied with the dishes here, albeit some minor improvements could be made.

( follow for more!🌸)

An almost authentic Indonesian restaurant with pretty extensive menus. They have a limited hot bar dishes perfect for quick take away or dining. The fried rice was excellent, too bad the fried chicken that comes with it was a little dry. Mee rebus was delicious too.

Colourful, Flavourful, filled with texture and love. The flavours brought me back to my childhood and remided me of the exotic shores of indonesia. Nasi goreng so good i did NASI that coming. The beef skewers were delightfully grilled to perfection, and the tangy peanut sauce delivered a splendid countertaste to the full, juicy, symphony that was a simple beef skewer. This authentic cuisine could only be described as the apotheosis of Indonesian culture fused with a modern aesthetic and uplifting ambience.

Discovered this gem of a place thanks to Zomato Gold. We have always been going to the other place nearby but this serves even better food. Looks like we'll be coming here from now on for our fix of nasi ayam kremes, nasi campur or satay.
Had the ayam bakar and kremes which was so goooood!

I don't eat Indonesian food much but I love it, and this place is a top spot. Everything is very affordable and there are tons of vegetarian options plus several vegan, although you should check to confirm as not all ingredients are listed on the menu. I really live the tempeh, which is a bit spicy and very nutty without any bitterness. The jackfruit curry is in a creamy yellow broth with thick slices of jackfruit that aren't very tender, but that's okay as it provides a nice texture. My favourite dish of all is the bowl of vermicelli and "rice cakes" (basically presser rice cubes) and fresh veg topped with tofu and a delicious peanut sauce. The stuffed tofu, which is sort of like a tofu and veg-stuffed giant spring roll, is also a must-try.

South Melbourne is full of local gems and this is no exception.

The ayam bakar was delicious, nice grilled flavours, cheap and well portioned. The sambal was spicy so be careful.

Sate chicken was smothered in sauce, just the way we like it.

We also tried this fried tofu thing with veggies and it was amazing. Crispy batter on the outside and soft tasty veggies inside.

Cannot wait to go back.

This was the most pleasant find as previously before finding this restaurant we ate at an Indonesian Restaurant not far from here that was not fresh and we left very disappointed and still hungry.

We decided to go for a walk on clarendon street and then all of a sudden we found this restaurant, full of indonesians, eating iftar during ramadan.
Authentic with ready made options to choose from!
Adored this restaurant with great flavour and value for money! ⁣

💰: $ - great value for money ⁣

we will be back for sure! We are still dreaming of the sambal and beef rendang.

A lovely joint that serves delicious Indonesian fares. They moved a few doors up the road recently and they’ve gotten even better since. The beef rendang, chilly mackerel cutlets, chicken curry and chicken liver/giblets and potato curry are all very good. Their veggies are ok and if you’re brave enough to have a dollop of their signature green chilly (hence “sambal ijo”), then your meal would be truly complete. Very friendly service too although as the food is served out of a bain marie, that is really of little consequence. All in a wonderful place for a really satisfying workday lunch.

So far is the best Indonesian Padangnese food in Melbourne. The green chilli sambal is always made perfectly, I love their Rendang, Kikil (Beef Tendon Curry) and the Lungs. I literally can eat their food every day.

Actually we did not have plan to went to this place, we would like go to different restaurant which does not far from this place, unfortunately that restaurant was closed for some renovations. Honestly i was a bit doubt after i seen the reviews on zomato, however my husband said “everyone has a different taste, if we’re not try it, we never know the truth”. So, we decided to came into the restaurant and ordered the food. We happy with the taste, my husband loves the Rendang, it’s tender and nice flavor, I had Ayam Kremes, it’s nice as well, I enjoyed it. We’ll back to Sambal Ijo to try different dishes.

If you’re very hungry and you currently don’t have that much money, it’s the right place to eat. It’s affordable enough and they offer a variety of food. I ordered steamed rice with Rendang (beef) and Tahu Isi (Tofu with vegetables in it). My boyfriend ordered steamed rice with Rendang (beef), Telor Balado (Spicy Egg), Ayam Kari (Chicken Curry) and Sambal Ijo (spicy sauce). It tastes delicious! They also have friendly staff

Delicious!!! Pick 3 dishes with rice from the Bain Marie. Dishes is purely depending on what are cook on the day. So the menu of options they gave in Bain Marie is not accurate. Anyway I picked terong balado ( eggplant balado), rendang (beef) and chicken curry. Taste so good. Good level of chilli and if you like spicier top up with the sambal which comes with it.

We also order ayam bakar. Really delicious too. The meat is juicy and marinated well and also the taste of Smokey-ness.

We ordered corn fritters as well probably one of the best Indonesian corn fritters I had.

Although the service staff is really well mannered and friendly, the speed of them moving is as fast as sloth. So if you are pressing on time and thinking to just quickly pick dishes from the Bain Marie pray hard that there are no queue in front of you.

The review is just based on the food taste as I had it through uber eats. We ordered chicken satay, siomay, soto ayam and batagor. I really like the chicken satay! The chicken was cooked perfectly, worth the price and most of the foods are not expensive as well. Soto ayam tasted pretty good considering it is not made in Indonesia, feels satisfied for that and the peanut sauce for both chicken satay and siomay. However, the siomay itself not tasted that good, not as what I expected as I miss siomay back from my house a lot. Batagor was okay.

Pretty decent food. Some of the ingredients may not be everyone's favourite but that's what makes this restaurant special. I had spicy potatoes with chicken liver as well as beef rendang on rice. They tasted better than i thought. I also had a chance to try its batagor which tasted a bit different from other restaurants' but it was still yummy. The only thing I wish they had done was to man the stand properly. There was a patron who had to wait a long time to order just because there was no waiters.

Indosari was my favourite restaurant in Melbourne and I was devastated when it failed to reopen after what looks like a break-in or vandalism. Now whenever I have Indonesian food, I have a bad habit of using Indosari as a benchmark to judge the food. Cue Warung Sambal Ijo. Specialising in nasi padang (the bain marie has daily rotating dishes such as beef rendang, beef tendon, gulai nangka, sambal eggs etc.), and traditional dishes such as sate, gado-gado, bakwon and ketroprak, Warung Sambal Ijo may just tide me over until I find a worthy replacement for Indosari. The beef rendang was tender and flavourful, and the lamb sate was grilled to perfection. However the beef tendon and gulai nangka failed to impressed - the former was cooked too long to the point it resembled mush and the latter was lacking the hit of flavour from the coconut milk and spices, not to mention that they only gave us one measly piece of jackfruit. Fortunately for them, those weren't deal breakers for me because I could taste potential in those dishes. Judging from the other reviews, there are other outstanding dishes to try as well. And you can bet that I will return to try them all. The down to earth service, affordable price and close proximity to where I live makes it a no-brainer for me to return.

A newly addition to Indonesian casual dining in South Melbourne, serving authentic Padang cuisine which is surely to die for! Excellent atmosphere - nice and cosy place to eat. Owners are lovely and great cook. Surely not to miss out the beef rendang - tender and full of flavor; the fried filled tofu - juicy and tasty; and the green chili fish. Will surely come again very soon to try out more of its menu.

Love this place. Really authentic Indonesian food served well and with a smile. Great for a quick lunch or tasty dinner. Menu is full of Indonesian classics and all of them taste great. The rendang is great, as is the nasi goreng. Well worth a visit if you’re in South Melbourne. Friendly staff and great food. Highly recommended.

This place served good variety of Indonesian food. Grilled beef ribs (iga bakar) was tender but too sweet for my liking. Frid chicken (ayam keremes) was alright, but the size of the chicken was quite big. I would prefer if the sambal is more spicy.

Homey Indonesian food. The fare here is like you'll find in many streetside eateries across South East Asia. There is a decent selection of food to choose from, srved alongside a very generous portion of rice. The star of the dishes is the ubiquitous sambal. Spicy, fragrant, flavorful. Three viands and rice will only set you back $13. At that price point, it's great for students, backpackers, and penny pinchers. But frankly, on a budget or not, the food here is worth the money. The staff is friendly and you can't go wrong no matter what dish you choose.

Pretty authentic Indonesian food. Ayam bakar is spot on but wished they sprinkled more sauce on top of the chicken. Ayam bakar was pretty standard. Sambal is pretty spicy and goes well with the dishes. Service is quick and friendly. Over all 7/10.
