For the price of the food, the portion sizing is extremely good value for money.
- Crispy lemon chicken was good.
- Nasi Lemak curry chicken was nice. The sambal was good and the curry chicken was slightly salty but the meat is tender and boneless. There was no potato in the curry however 🤔
- Chicken curry laksa, decently big portion. Generous with the chicken pieces. Its good enough but I felt the broth was a little too watery. But for the price, I'm not complaining.
On the whole will return to take advantage of this good deal.
The chicken rice tastes amazing. I reckon they could do slightly better portions of the chicken but the taste is consistent!
You could easily walk past this eatery and not notice it at all. Craving some good old Malaysian tucker, I went hunting for this place.
It was a quiet Friday afternoon and the place was empty. I had their happy hour deal which was pretty impressive. $9.90 for a selected number of hawker dishes. I chose the nasi lemak with curry chicken. The rice was fragrant and not overly coconutty. The sambal was amazing - sweet, spicy and slightly tangy. The curry chicken was standard fare. I was pleasantly surprised by the large portion of the dish.
Service was friendly and efficient. There was even a chorus of thank you's as I walked out the door, reminiscent of a Japanese restaurant.
So for some nice, reasonable food with no frills, My Makan Place ticks all the right boxes.
Amazing service and a great value for food! Whilst the food itself isn’t the most authentic representation of Malaysian food it definitely serves as close as it can get in Melbourne. Come by during happy hour to save a couple bucks and enjoy a very wholesome dining experience, my nasi lemak was only $9.90! So many other places would price this huge serving for easily $13+, so I can not recommend this hidden gem enough!
Nice Malaysian place to eat. You enter and order at the counter and find a seat. The menu is Small, Ordered their Chicken Laksa, it was creamy, not too spicy. The portion was large so it was good value for around $12. Similar to Laksa House at Elizabeth Street.
Staff are ok and there was some music playing at the restaurant, mix of English and heard one kpop song (which was cool JJP, I like Kpop 😂)
Would come back to try the rice dishes as I saw quite a few people order them too.
If you are hungry and really need something to fill your belly, this is the place to go in Melbourne. The serving size is prey large and you will never walk away half full. Food is delicious and I will give all stars. The place is not a proper dine in restaurant as such, imagine it’s a small place and good for smaller groups like 2/4. Overall great food and a quick eat place.
Overall, it's a good place to eat. We had nasi lemak which had very vagrant coconut rice. The chicken itself was a bit bland but crispy. The other dish we had was bbq pork with egg noodle. Again the noodle tasted outstanding though the pork was just so so. The portion were rather small but the price was not expensive too, so it's kind of even out.
Great food, neat little place with lovely ambiance. The food was on point, I ordered a seafood laksa although I wasnt expecting eggplant, carrots and broccoli it was a deliciously fresh meal. We also ordered a hainanese chicken on rice great flavor. Food came out real quick and the staff were friendly thankyou, great start to my Melbourne trip

My friends and I were regulars at The Grand Tofu (except we had a bad experience on our last visit) so we decided to give My Makan Place a go. They've got a pretty slim menu for a Malaysian/Chinese restaurant (not bad if it's all good) and it still seems like they are still working out what to put on their menu (their bain marie was empty). Judging from their social media, they are still figuring it out and are taking input from customers as to what they'd like to eat.
I had their laksa which wasn't bad, spongy tofu which soaked up the broth, fish cakes, shredded chicken and creamy eggplant. It was served with a side of satay sauce which was unusual for me, it's definitely a first. I used it as a dipping sauce but halfway through I dumped it into my soup which gave it more heat, some nuttiness as well as richness to the body of the broth. Hope I didn't offend someone!
My friends thought their meals were nothing special however. Of course we'd love to see some yong tofu on their menu where we can pick our own ingredients to go with our laksa, it's what we always got at The Grand Tofu.
