I m a big fan of their custard puff. I always get 4 pieces for $2.5 their custard is not sweet like other places. They make fresh from the machine and the service is really fast too .
I was walking around Chinatown mid afternoon and was hungry for a snack so decided to head into midcity to try out a few of the bad boys. I have heard of the royal custard puffs before and how delicious and cheap they were. I bought 12 for 5.50 and couldn't wait to try them straight away. The batter was delicious and sweet and tasted like vietnamese pandan. The custard filling was minimal and tasted average. Take note that the store accepts cash only.
Definitely would return!
best dessert after eating chinese food! the outside is crunchy and the inside is melting hot custard. however, it's not sweet enough for me.

Midcity Arcade in Bourke Street has plenty of food venues on offer as we were leaving, I smelt something so delish that I had to drop by and get some. What I was able to smell were custard puffs and that’s right, inside these puffs were…you guessed it, CUSTARD! The outside was crispy, the inside was soft and fluffy and the custard, real oozy and delish.
super cheap and filling snack that hits the spot if you’re looking for a little bit of sweetness. the staff were very reasonable when i asked to have a fresh batch of the delicious puffs - but be prepared to wait about 5 - 10 mins if you want them piping hot and fresh. 4 stars mostly due to the convenience of location with a very decent price for a sweet snack in the city!

Ambience: it's located in mid city arcade and doesn't have any seats so not much can be said.
Service: since they only have this for sale (and tea egg i think) it's pretty straight forward, the staff was pretty nice. Though since there's only one person working, you'll have to wait if theres someone before you. (Also some ppl said they got less than what they're supposed to though we didn't pay attention 😅)
Food: Well i dont know what's not to be loved. It's crunchy on the outside, moist and warm on the inside, the custard is so yum and just so good. Although 12 all for yourself may be a bit too filling since it's sweet. (or not)
Price: I think for what you get it's really reasonable, or even cheap.

Took a short cut through the mid city complex today and discovered Royal Custard Puff and some yummy looking custard puff balls. The shop itself was nicely presented but if I’m honest it was the price that caught my attention. 4 for $2 or 12 for $5 provided my with an affordable mid afternoon snack on my way to the tram. I do like custard and these little balls generally delivered... perhaps about 1/4 lacked anything but a touch of custard... the others were nicely filled. It’s a good thing I don’t work anywhere near here or this might be habit forming.
LIT: only $2 to satisfy a custard craving and you get 5 small hot custard puff balls. Love that it smells sweet and buttery.
NOT SO LIT: I wish they were slightly more generous with the custard as the actual puff is quite thick.
We found these to be pretty good. Really cheap, 5 for 2 dollars. Would have loved for the puff to be less doughy and more custard, but pretty good if you have left dinner not feeling full.
OMG! That’s taste exactly like the one I had when I am a child. Glad I finally find it😋 taste amazing ! Will definitely visiting often as it’s really good price with quantity. If you like bit crispy taste suggestion waiting the fresh-one just baked.
It's the only place I know that sells custard puffs and they definitely hit the spot when you're craving for them! It's $5.50 for 12 pcs and they're best eaten while warm and still fresh. The owner is quite friendly and nice and was happy to take card. Small and quaint kind of a shop but lovely nonetheless.

I've been here for YEARS, while the prices increased a bit, this store hidden in the city centre has not changed. The owner is very kind and always make hot, fresh custard puffs out of the machine for you.
When you bite into it, the oozing of the custard fills your mouth, it is not too sweet as well. I came back to buy another bag of custard puffs after consuming 12 pieces, it's that good!
mine was not warm when i got it - prefer fresh and warm. reasonably priced - good for a quick snack. custard was a bit more on the chunky side than gooey
Loved the matcha ice cream with the puffs, the amount I got was very generous too. The shopkeeper was very friendly and I definitely will be coming back again.

It is a must! This little chinese bakery brings a sense of place to Sydney's China Town. The creamy hot puff are really nice and cheap dessert option. Specially good when they're hot! Going to China Town and not having at least a gold coin of puffs is like not going.
Love this place, been here 10+ time, and the quality is always consistent. Best after-dinner quick dessert.
