Aunty Franklee was a casual Malaysia restaurant serving traditional Malaysian cuisine. My favourite dish was of course, their bak kut teh; it was very herbaly, flavourful and comforting. Their rice dishes were pretty average, but their noodle dishes were pretty good. Ambiance was nice and cozy, service was friendly and prompt.
their dry bak keut teh is the best i’ve everrr had in melbourne but today we tried their fried mee hoon and their fried chicken with blue pea flower rice! both of them were pretty good but i would strongly recommend just ordering their og dry bak keut teh and soup bak keut teh!!

Grabbed Char Kuey Teow ($14.5) & Bak Kut Teh ($10).
Decided to pop by after hearing about this place so many times. I absolutely enjoyed Char Kuey Teow - slightly oily but VERY flavorful, tons of meats, and great texture. I can't get enough of it! Slightly expensive considering the portion but still tasted amazing :) Bak Kut Teh was quite average considering all the good reviews I've been getting. It was bland and lacked flavors. Overall, highly recommend this place!
Went for their lobster special just before lockdown. So glad I was treated to this fresh and flavousome dish before being deprived from eating in this excellent relaxed and welcoming place. We have actually been eating here since we were 1st introduced via Zomato Gold's unbeatable promo. I love the famous dry bak kut teh, and chicken soup too.
Dont read the reviews, go order from them.Just order, you will like it too.

We contacted the restaurant directly to order this majestic dish. The lobsters cost $110/kg and we got one that weighed between 1.3-1.6kg.
A bowl with 4 noodles can be comfortably shared by 4 people. There were 6 of us, so we ordered two additional noodle dishes and portions were just nice. Aunty franklee’s version cooked lobsters with crispy noodles - personally I prefer less crispy yee mee type of noodles purely because those noodles soak up more of the sauce, but this version still went well with the ginger + spring onion sauce.
Lobster itself was very fresh and meaty. It took us a good hour to demolish the dish. I even injured my finger in the process thanks to the sharp pincers, but that was solely my fault.
As for the other dishes, I thought the tomato maggi goreng stayed true to its east Malaysian roots. Generous portions of fish cakes and eggs too. I’m generally less of a char kuey teow fan, so it’s no surprise that I favoured the other two dishes.
This good experience and the smell of dry bak kut teh wafting through the cafe guarantees that I’ll be back for another meal!

The ribs were so tasty and smokey! Absolute must have. The coconut chicken was also delicious and nothing like I’ve had before. One thing I don’t understand is the blue rice. Why blue? The colour blue is the most unappetising colour. Flavour wise it tasted just like regular rice but my brain was hesitant to eat it numerous times... Other than the blue rice (which really isn’t that big of an issue), I’ll definitely be coming back for more.
Little gem in Hawthorn. Went in before it started to get packed and loud with crowd. Service was amazing, food was amazing.
Bak kut teh indeed has the traditional strong herbs taste to it.
Land below the wind beef brisket and tripe vermicelli noodle is spot on, just it would be great if there's more tripe as the one bowl that we got was tiny broken 2-3 pieces of tripe.
The best well done dish is the beef ribs with the coconut rice, it's just AMAZING! Love it.
Will definitely come back for more 😍
However, heard from table next to us stating the char kuew tay has decreased in portion but 'wok hei' is good. Maybe something to look into?
I love the beef ribs at Aunty Franklee😍😍 The ribs are full of favour and it's so tender, wash it down with some pickled veggies or bak kut teh and it'll make you a happy little piggy felling so satisfied 😋😋

Aunty Franklee has been around for while and it’s known for its authentic Malaysian dishes. With two stores located in Hawthorn and Melbourne CBD, you know it’s good when they just keep popping up around Melbourne. The Hawthorn venue is located on the busy Burwood road and it is a tad difficult finding parking as they are all time limited. Pushing through the doors into the venue, you’re greeted by friendly staff and the delicious aroma of food cooking!
Absolutely stunning restaurant serving Malaysian food - lucky to try both of the set menus but my favourites have to be the nasi lemak (of course), the chicken wingettes, CKT, beef ribs and the mothers hen soup is so beautiful. Drinks made me so reminiscent of malaysia as well!
Great atmosphere, nice decor, amazingg food and value. The staff there is also extremely friendly. We've definitely found our favorite Malaysian!
Love the CBD Auntie Franklee so we thought we would give hawthorn a try.
Had the char kuey teow which was not bad! Nice pieces of Chinese sausage mixed in to the noodles.
We also had the blue pea rice with chicken Maryland the sauce on top was good but surprisingly super spicy.
Friendly staff and cute interior, happy to come back to try the bakkutteh!
Really friendly service and healthy food
Love their satay chicken skewers, kueh tiaw, and bak kut teh, but they’re rather pricy compare to other Malaysian restaurant like Papparich or Chef Lagenda. Nevertheless, it’s a good spot to hang around with friends and family for a catchup.
Delicious food and great service
I had an amazing experience at Aunty Franklee in the city and this one is no different. The cooking of the dishes on the menu is perfect. Amazing Flavors and textures made this one of my favorite restaurants. This place is located near Hawthorn train station on Burwood road. The interior of this restaurant is beautiful. The vibe in the restaurant is very calm and relaxed. The staff is very friendly and cheerful. The preparation time for the dishes was a bit long, but I don’t mind waiting for a bit if the quality of the food is that good.
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I've visited their city store on Russell before so I was pretty excited to try the Aunty Franklee in Hawthorn. I loved the interior of the restaurant - it looked sophisticated, well thought out and the ambience was lovely. The staff here are also very kind and attentive.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I love everything on their menu - especially the classics that you can't go wrong with. Char Kway Teoh was one of the highlights. It was freshly made and I could smell the "wok hei" from a mile away. Such good flavours and better than a lot of other Malaysian restaurants.
I also tried the Sambal Blue Pea Flower Rice (w Grilled ‘Bakars’ Beef Ribs & Chicken Skewers). It was not only aesthetically pleasing to the eye but also tasted delicious. I couldn't stop eating it. The grilled beef ribs and chicken skewers were really flavoursome and was grilled perfectly. I would come back just for this dish.
I've never had a Dried Bak Kut Teh before but when I did, it was like heaven on earth. It had a sticky teriyaki kind of flavour - sweet and salty at the same time. It was incredible.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: I am sad to say that I'm not the biggest fan of Bak Kut Teh but out of all the ones I've tried in Melbourne, this place does do a better one. The broth feels exactly like how a grandma would cook it - authentic and slow cooked.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: I honestly love the interior of this place and the food here was amazing. I will be back!
Got here to meetup with a friend and redeem my zomato gold offer. This is a bit of a chic atmosphere and very clean. I loved the service and the guys there seemed to know their menu very well.
We got this grilled chicken with a bluish rice, pork stew and orange iced teas. They did take like 20 minutes or more to come with the food, but it was fine as the atmosphere was good.
The pork was cooked quite brilliantly and
I recently visited Aunty Franklee and was treated to the most delish spread. The decor here is funky and modern, it is beautifully decorated.
We enjoyed the banquet which was a selection of the most tastiest food! I do love a chicken wing, this was so gooood and very spicy, right up my alley. The noodles were full of flavour and had a smoky wok taste, really yummy.
We tried 3 different soups that were all very unique, again they tasted amazing. The sambal blue pea flower rice was the perfect selection of rice, chicken satay, beef rib, anchovies and salad. It looked and tasted amazing.
I highly recommend a visit here, everything was perfect. Thank you for the invite!
Great ambience and pleasant service
I had the pleasure of visiting Aunty Franklee in Hawthorn to try their new Spring-Summer Menu, and I was very impressed by the experience!
The venue in Hawthorn is absolutely gorgeous. I love the cute fit-out which is very homely yet also a bit classy too. It’s spacious and comfortable, and very welcoming as soon as you enter.
We started off with drinks - Orange Iced Tea, Malaysian Three-Layer Tea and Watermelon Juice. The Three-Layer Tea consisted of black tea, palm sugar and evaporated milk, and it was a delightful combination! The Orange Iced Tea was light, sweet and very refreshing, perfect for the warm day.
We tried the ‘Classic’ and the ‘Spring-Summer’ menus, both of which consisted of a variety of dishes.
Sambal Blue Pea Flower Rice (w Grilled ‘Bakars’ Beef Ribs & Chicken Skewers) - a unique take on the classic dish! This has got to be one of the best nasi lemak dishes I’ve tried. It’s presented beautifully with the blue pea flower, coconut and pandan infused rice, which adds a nice colourful touch. All the components were made very well, and tasted so good when mixed together. The beef ribs were so tender, saucy and flavourful, and I loved that the chicken skewers had pork floss on it!
Coco Chicken Wingettes - slathered in a coconut sambal sauce, these wings do give a little bit of a spicy kick! Nonetheless, super delicious!
Tomato Mee Goreng - one of my favourites! I was obsessed with the sweet and tangy tomato-based sauce! So delicious and definitely worth a try.
Thunder Tea Rice - it was my first time trying this traditional Hakka dish and I was very surprised. It’s a rice dish, topped with a variety of different ingredients, and served with an aromatic herbal tea broth. The broth is a vibrant green colour, but flavour-wise it isn’t too strong. You can pour it onto the rice and mix it together, making it almost like a ‘congee’ which I really enjoyed!
Char Kuey Teow - of course we had to try this Malaysian classic! I really enjoyed their CKT; it had a good amount of prawns and fish cake, and there was a nice smoky finish to it. Can’t go wrong!
Old Fashioned BKT - one of Aunty Franklee’s signatures. This traditional dish is made up of a 23 herb pork broth; it’s very hearty and warming. I loved dipping the crispy Chinese donuts in the broth which would soak up the flavours.
Dry BKT - I actually really liked this version, maybe even more than the old-fashioned. The dark, sticky sauce was full of flavour, and the braised meat was still very fatty and tender.
Mother Hen Soup - if you’re not a big fan of herbal flavours, I’d definitely recommend you try this soup! It was so flavourful and warming, clean and not too heavy - definitely a table favourite. I loved all the mushrooms which soaked up the delicious soup. A must try!
Overall, I had an amazing experience at Aunty Franklee, and we all left with full and happy bellies. I would highly recommend checking this venue out (even if you’ve been to the CBD one, as it’s a different experience!).
Thank you so much for having us!
This is probably the best Malaysian food I’ve tried in Melbourne! I can’t describe how good this was. It’s made so homely and really respecting its traditional roots.
Now here is what we tried! Tomato Mi Goreng is really good, it’s not too heavy and super tasty! 100% would recommend the Blue Bakers Beef Ribs is best dish and a winner winner for me that night! I’m actually still dreaming of those ribs! Trust me I’m coming back for that dish!!
We tried a lot of dishes and they all were amazing! If I can’t tell you how much to visit this place, I can’t tell you enough. The owners are super passionate and truely want you to enjoy your food. This isn’t just about being a restaurant but a place you can enjoy delicious Malaysian food that’s made with pure love of the culture and traditions.
This place was packed and I was initially told that I need to have a booking, but I was lucky enough to get a table for two within 5 mins. The pork ribs with blue rice is so tasty and had me licking my fingers (I washed my hands prior, of course). Then the Mother Hen soup really was the mother of all soups. If you’re ever at Aunt Franklee, you must try the Mother Hen soup. It tasted so authentic and it’s absolutely delicious. I will definitely come back again for the soup!
Omg this place has amazing Malaysian food!
I heard they were frequently voted as the best in Melbourne and featured in The Good Food Guide, The Age, SBS Food etc so had to try it and I was not disappointed!
We had the classic menu:
1. SAMBAL BLUE PEA FLOWER RICE - blue pea flower, coconut and pandan infused rice, accompanied with homemade shrimp sambal, toasted peanuts, tomatoes, cucumber, crispy anchovies, and hard boiled egg. Served with grilled 'Bakars' Beef ribs and grilled chicken skewers - OMG the rice was so pretty in blue! It smelt really nice as well. The grilled chicken skewers were soo nicely marinated and tasted great with the sauce provided to dip in. The beef ribs had a really nice unique flavour as well and was very tasty, although it was a bit chewy in some bits, but overall very tender.
2. OLD FASHIONED BAK KUT TEH - a hokkien-styled, 23 herbs pork broth, notes of aniseed, cloves, cinnamon, pepper, garlic, among other chinese herbs, broth contains some dried squid, served with multi grain rice and chinese donut - Wow the broth is so so flavoursome and nice, however, if you don't like the smell of chinese herbs you probably won't like this dish - for me, it was just really rich broth and I loved it! The pork inside was just melt in mouth and very addictive. First time I've dunked chinese donut into bak kut teh, it was alright, but would match better in congee.
3. Char Kuey Teow - flat rice noodles, wok fried, creating a smoky indulging dish with prawns, fish cake, chinese sausage, egg, chives, beansprout, suggestions of pork lard with homemade spicy sambal - It had the wok charred flavour, juicy prawns, and everything just tasted so good in this dish! I dislike really salty char kuey teow where they over flavour the rice noodles, but this dish was just on point! Really enjoyed it!
4. Dry Bak Kut Teh - pork meats braised in a 23 herbs broth, then wok fried to caramelise in a dark sticky sauce of dried squid, garlic and chilli - First time I've tried bak kut teh dry version - the pork meats were so tender and seriously marinated so well! It's like, the flavour is so good and unique that I can't stop tasting it/sucking it to taste what it is! hahahaha
The iced tea was really good too! Not sour as well, and looked pretty with an orange on top!
It was a very filling and satisfying dinner! Thank you Aunty Franklee for producing such awesome food!
Authentic Malaysian Flavours, True Malaysian Hospitality and Malaysian Approved is what you get at Aunty Franklee
The internal decor here is very impressive and its nice and cosy. Located on a busy strip in Hawthorn is this amazing Malaysian Restaurant and serves up big flavours.
We got to try their popular and highlight dishes and could not even pick a favourite.
We had the dry and old classic bak kut teh and I must say the flavours were really good and authentic. The broth is cooked to perfection and you can tell its made with all the different herbs and spices.
I really enjoyed the char kuay teow and tomato mee goreng, they both had nice charred flavours and that makes a big difference.
What you would find special is the Thunder Tea Rice, the broth is cooked for over 48 hours and this dish is made to order. So make sure you place an order before your visit if you would like to try it. Its very unique and not many places would have this in Melbourne.
If you are after something soupy, the Mother Hen Soup is a must. The flavours are really in dept and its made with four kinds of mushrooms which brings it to another level.
Overall, I really enjoyed the dishes here at Aunty Franklee and it is very close to what you would get in Malaysia.
The staff is lovely and attentive and it truly showcases true Malaysian Hospitality.
Great Malaysian spot with a quaint venue - the venue in Hawthorn is a lot nicer than its CBD compatriot. The food however is just as good if not better! It’s authentic, and tastes fresh and delicious 🤤 The bah kut teh is a must-try with its delicious broth. Will definitely come back!
Char Kway Teow with deep fried garlic , prawns ,dried bean seasoning is just right which is my favourite .Reasonable price for either alone or with friends
Amazing interior ! Dry bAk kut Teh was the highlight
Bak kut teh is decent but didn't find it amazing. Pork rib was surprisingly not soft, like it wasn't boiled long enough.
The mother hen soup was fantastic though. As was the pear and fungus drink.
Read the good reviews and decided to try with Zomato Gold. Did not disappoint. Loved the tasty food and the decor but the food portions were pretty small for the price they charged.
Great atmosphere with traditional Malaysian food! It’s a very relaxing environment, lovely service and GREAT decor! With Zomato 1+1 on food is extra bonus!
Great for date night!
Their soups are amazing. There is no doubt about that. Portions are quite small for the price but thats ok, the taste is still worth paying for. The grilled beef ribs was full of fat. There was hardly any meat. It was very disappointing. The char kway teow was yummy and well charred.
Can’t fault it! Food was just so good & really affordable. The service was also great. Best Malaysian we have had in Melbourne. We will be back to try more dishes for sure.
Good place for a date night and the food was delicious, very flexible vegetarian options and portioned well. We had the bakuteh, thunder tea and cleaned the bowls
Ordered the Coconut Papaya Ice Cream and oh my gosh it’s so good! It’s so unique and the combination between coconut and papaya is so good! Like you have the little papaya chunks within the ice cream itself! Very satisfying. It’s only $4 so definitely very affordable!
Saturday night dinner using 2 Zomato Gold B1G1F memberships. Unexpectedly delayed, host was kind enough to hold our table for us when we rang despite peak period (restaurant was full to the brim with customers).
We had 2 X Grilled "bakars" short beef ribs, large portion, chicken Maryland, and Char Koay Teow. What a delectable feast! The Beef ribs were melt in your mouth tasty, they came with separate peanut butter sauce, but the ribs were already super-fab on their own. We loved this dish best. 10/10!
Chicken Maryland was a close 2nd, the sambal was seriously spicy, and gave an instant hit to the palate, loved it! 8.5/10.
CKT was pretty good too, but since I'm partial to Penang-style (northern Malaysian) CKT, I'd rate it 8/10.
Services & ambience: 9/10, there was a bit of a wait, but perfectly understandable given the Saturday night crowd. Host, Fion, was particularly warm & amiable, chatted with us.
I think we're gonna be regulars at this joint!
Decided to try this place as it was on Zomato Gold. The food was amazing and the staffs were very friendly. My favourite dishes were the beef ribs and Bak Kut Teh, the beef ribs were extremely flavourful and the Bak Kut Teh was really authentic. My cravings for some good Malaysian food was 10/10 satisfied. Can’t wait to visit again!
With gold member 1+1 food ..they give smaller serve
Love this place. The grilled beef rib was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Highly recommended. The tomato fried noodle was surprisingly delicious. Taste like maggi goreng. Authentic food
This amazingly little shop found in hawthorn has the most beautiful interior displays.. wasn’t really catered to the theme of the establishment I think but it was pretty nice.. the food was amazing and was pretty authentic..
we had the soup & dry bkt which was essentially stewed pork.. chicken soup.. and char kuey tew... all of the food there was very tasty and I wouldn’t hesitate to return again..
The only thing that was a bit of a downside was the portions.. for the price the portions were pretty small in my opinion..
Great restaurant for Malaysian food..
It's amazing to find good Malaysian food in Melbourne eastern suburbs. Owner and wait staff are friendly and make you feel welcome eventhough you're using ZG.
Delicious, authentic food in a tastefully designed space. Great place for work lunches and casual dates. Highly recommend the Beef Ribs. The Thunder Tea Rice is also a delicious healthy option.
Great food and great service. They were not flustered when I indicated that I was going to use the Zomato Gold privileges. Some other participating restaurants are not so welcoming which is a disappointment.
We had a wonderful dinner at Aunty Franklee, the food was great especially the char kway teow - super delicious - and we also ordered the short ribs which was good. The only negative about our visit was that it took quite a long time for us to get our meals, so hopefully service continues to improve.
The lady at the counter was so accomodating and nice. The food was really good. We got the old style and dry Ba kuh teh. We prefer the dry one. Beef ribs was the favorite! Marinade was pretty delicious. Would recommend the restaurant
We have our dinner here and really enjoyed it. Nice ambience, great service and very friendly staff. The food was flavoursome and delicious. Grilled bakar short beef ribs are to die for! Highly recommend!!
So good! If you love bold flavour, you need to try this place. We ordered
1. Sambal blue pea flower rice - The rice is so fragrant and the condiments, oh lovely!
2. “Bakar” short ribs - gelatinous, sticky and tender, all in a very good way. The portion is generous and highly recommended 👍 you can even share the large portion for two people.
Good food for a good price. The ambience is great too. Nice little place tucked away in Hawthorn. We had Bak Kut Teh & Char Kuey Teow , both were spectacular. Loved the charcoal taste on the char kuey teow and the soup in bak kut teh. Kudos!!
Loved the bak kuh teh, rice dish, and environment! Chicken skewers, wings, and service are average.
Nice food and good service . The old fashioned bak kut teh is very authentic and dry bak kut teh is very flavorful. Will definitely come back again
Aunty Franklee, a homage to a family. It is indeed a home away from home, a place for comfort. Thanks to Fiorn for your great hospitality.
All ten of us love the food!
We had old fashioned bak kut teh, dry bak kut teh, grilled "bakars" short beef ribs, mother hen soup, wok-fired noodles in chicken soup with four kinds of mushroom; and beef brisket & tripe noodles in soup. There are so many other dishes we would like to try. Everyone has their own meal and cost roughly $12-$14 per pax.
the bakuteh is so authentic, best in Melbourne I dare say. the char kew tiau is also superb, they add the fried pork bits which enhances the flavour. the one in hawthorn east is better than the chinatown one I think
Aesthetics of the restaurant are nice, it is furnished very well, meaning it is great for photos! The food is a little pricey, but definitely worth it!
Greeted by a warm welcome to oldies tunes and a nice classic atmosphere that made you feel like you're just at home. The food came quick and it just hit the spot perfectly. Would highly recommend ☺️
Found this place cause of gold, was not disappointed! The char kuey teow was on point with a good "wok heat" flavour (hard to find in Mel) and the bak kuh teh was awesome for such a cold winter's night, similar to ones I've eaten in Penang.
The restaurant feel was good and homey, will need to come back and try out the others to see if other dishes are as good as the 2 we tried tonight.
4.6/5😊
Mother hen soup was very tasty. Beef rib was also very nice. Exceptional service amidst the crowd (did not make reservation). Also very generous with the cut chili’s
Came to know this restaurant once became Zomato Gold member.
Really glad to have visit this restaurant, the bak kut teh is really.. really tasty and deliciously good.
So much so that this is now my second visit in just three days, it's so hard to resist.
I highly recommend to give this restaurant the visit and support it deserves.
Food: Really Delicious
Service: Very Friendly (Particularly the girl and the man who talk to us, on both visit, I appreciate the friendliness)
Price: Really affordable
Conclusion: great restaurant for your lunch or dinner.
Ah Bak Kut Teh... Warms the soul if done well. If not, it tastes like broken dreams. A pretty cool interior job here, a throwback with a nod to the old colonial days against a more modern mood lighting and pastel grey palette. Luckily, the bone broth lives up the the get up and it's pretty good here - part classy like the venue - part street - big on the herbal flavour. Beef ribs are also very good, presumably sloweed cooked until tender and then charred until sweet soy glaze exterior is caramelised and pairs well with the blue pea coconut rice. Very homely stuff.
Delicious soup bakuteh with just the right hint of herbs in it. Definitely perfect dish to have in this chilly weather we have at the moment. Have it with chinese donuts, rice and their chilli sauce is a must.
Aunty Franklees chicken skewers are some of my favourite in Melbourne. The pork floss is just a great finishing touch and the skewers are always full of tasty chicken. Their slow cooked soups are flavourful and so filling for winter, and the blue tea rice is a really cool create dish. Inside it’s light and bright and seems to bring in an eclectic range of customers. Owner Ffion is sweet and friendly very passionate about food!
I have been to Aunty Franklee in the city and its my first time to the one in Hawthorn! It does not disappoint! As a malaysian food fan I love it. The dishes are well prepared and full of flavour. Every dish was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. Loved the Tea Tarik. One of the many places that does a Bak Kut Teh and I loved it. Can't wait to be back a teaser for my Malaysian Holiday coming up. ***Disclaimer: although the restaurant has generously invited me to their restaurant this review is still based on my genuine opinion.
Papa Whatever Floats Your Bloat and Mama Whatever Floats Your Bloat go through spells where they visit their favourite restaurant of the moment repeatedly before deciding they want to have nothing to do with it. Restaurants that have received this treatment: Chef Lagenda and China Red. Restaurants that have somehow escaped this treatment, despite multiple visits: Bar Idda and Le Café Flo. Aunty Franklee is their flavour of the week (on a completely unrelated note: remember this song?) and time will tell whether it becomes a former favourite or a firm favourite.
I went this restaurant with a big group of people to have a gathering time. The Bak Kut Teh with multi-grain rice was really nice. For my preference I would like to have white rice but unfortunately they don’t. The Char Kuey Teow with mild spicy was totally awesome, and I would like to recommend you guys to try the delicious homemade durian ice cream with corn flakes toppings! Anyway, this is a best authentic Malaysian restaurant in Melbourne. Thanks to Fiona for the effort, I’ll come back next time!
Cute little Malaysian restaurant with a very warm atmosphere. The meal we had was presented beautifully and very homey. My favourite was the mother hen soup, particularly on a cold Melbourne evening.
It was an excellent eating experience. Thanks to Fiorn, who did an incredible job helping us with the menu, and providing terrific service. Meal was served hot and yummy. Additionally, setting is beautiful
Was recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint me at all. The food was simply amazing, flavourful, and fresh, and also good value for money. Highly recommend this place
Aunty Franklee is a Malaysian restaurant that is not like any other Malaysian eateries in Melbourne. The concept of food, service, settings really stands out. Superb!
Situated on Burwood road, off Hawthorn train station, this Malaysian eatery offers variety of good food. Food and service really stand out from the crowd

We were party of four, walking in on a Thursday night. The restaurant was almost fully packed so I highly recommend that reservation should be made before hand. We were greeted by a friendly staff and tempting aroma of coconut rice.
We ordered the mother hen soup, grilled short beef ribs, dry bak kut teh, char kuay teow, chicken skewers, bak kut teh soup. The dishes had bundles of flavour but not overpowering. All worked together beautifully. We finished off with some aromatic layer cake and refreshing ice cream.
Overall, the service and food were surprisingly outstanding. It was definitely worth the indulgence.
P.S. We enjoyed every minute in here till forgot taking photos :)
3.5-
It’s good. However from the menu and the flavor it’s different from the one in CBD. I like the interior style : )
An amazing feed we had last night. We ordered the char kuey teow, bak kut teh (soup) & the grilled 'bakars' short beef ribs. The char kuey teow was full of flavour, as well as the soup. Finally, the ribs truly do fall off the bone and melt in your mouth. Highly rate this place, we'll certainly be visiting again in the future.
Always been skeptical and picky about asian food in Melbourne. Most places are 'Hit and Miss'. I was recommended by a friend to try out Aunty Franklee and I rocked up on that same day that evening. I was not disappointed at all. I had Dry Bah Ku Teh, Char Kuew Teow, Grilled Short Ribs and finished off with Kuih Lapis and Teh Tarik. In conclusion, the dishes have a tiny bit difference in flavour but Aunty Franklee is one of the gems that offers cuisines closest to home. A definite must try.
We organised a farewell lunch for a friend at Aunty Franklee on Sunday. I love the the friendly staff, ambience and cosy atmosphere.
We were sipping on Malaysian espresso coffee while looking through the menu. I wanted to try everything!
I ordered the Thunder Tea Rice. It was full of flavour and delicious. It's not like any other rice dish I've had before. Highly recommend this dish.
For drinks and dessert, we had watermelon juice and durian ice cream. Light and refreshing....
Will definitely be back to try the other dishes.
So good that we went back twice in the same day so that we can try more dishes! Definitely recommend if you're in the area and after authentic Southeast Asian cuisine. I particularly enjoyed the grilled beef ribs, with its sticky sweet sauce, tender meat and rendered fats.
Aunty Franklee is an awesome restaurant. It has the best Malaysian food we’ve had by some distance. There are some seriously interesting offerings here - beautifully composed, cooked and presented dishes. They don't just rely on the usual classic dishes. There’s lots of innovation and great flavours abound. And, it’s all in a lovely warm atmosphere.
The restaurant had a bright modern aspect and is tastefully decorated. It’s anything but overdone. There’s a lovely eclectic collection of cane and glass. We also admired some of the soft wall colours here as they really work.
Our first surprise was that they serve all natural wines here. We were advised to have the 2017 Staring at the Sun, a blend of fiano, vermentino and moscato giallo. This is an organic wine from Gippsland. It’s a nice drop which goes beautifully with the food at Aunty Franklee. The wines here have all been specially chosen with assistance from a sommelier with expertise in organic wines. The wine has hints of lychee and is beguilingly cloudy and opaque. I’ll be honest, I’ve always been suspicious of natural wines. I would never have chosen this wine myself but we both really enjoyed it. I would order it again in a heartbeat, especially as it so complements the food. At 10% alcohol it’s a wine you can have without regret.
We started with the sardine dip which is beautiful. It has a startlingly fresh sardine flavour. It does what is intended and seriously enlivens the palate. We really liked it. We had the silver whiting with turmeric relish next. The crisp whiting is excellent. It is cooked so wonderfully and works brilliantly with the green peppercorn vinaigrette. There’s also a lovely sharp taste from the relish. Again, we really thought this was a very very good starter.
The next dish was the sambal blue pea flower rice. This is a lovely looking dish highlighted of course by the blue coconut rice. It also has chopped tomato, fried peanuts, sliced cucumber, a hard boiled egg, fried anchovies and sambal. It’s fantastic. Everything works, the look, the taste and the textures. It’s a sensational dish.
We then had a sample of the grilled “bakars” short beef ribs. These were beautiful and delicate. The sticky rib meat is so soft and falls effortlessly off the bone. It’s fantastic with the sambal or the peanut sauce. It’s another highlight dish which the world’s most beautiful woman declared her dish of the day.
The char kuey teow is another superb looking looking dish which again has very well balanced heat. There’s so much to like in this dish. The noodles are soft and beautiful. It has gorgeous pork crackling. Love the Chinese sausage as well. It’s a great dish.
Next up was wok fired chicken noodle soup comprising wok fired vermicelli noodles in a slow cooked mother hen soup with five kinds of mushrooms, with dried squid. Gosh, this had such beautiful flavour. The mushrooms too are cooked to perfection. It is a beautifully substantive soup, and perfect with a dash of chilli sauce on the soup spoon. The chicken pieces were fantastic too! This soup is a serious taste sensation. It was my favourite dish, a hard thing to nominate among such a great range of dishes.
The only disappointment was that we were too full to have the dry bak kut teh, a house specialty. There’s an upside to this though. The dish is bound to feature prominently when we next visit Aunty Franklee soon.
We finished with the Sarawak layer cake and various samples of durian, prune and mocha and jackfruit. This is lovely cake. It’s delicate, light and fluffy. It’s a great way to finish.
We adored our experience at Aunty Franklee and frankly we’ll definitely be back. This is a wonderful restaurant. You can even have BYO wine here to reduce cost. Our sincere thanks to the wonderful Fion for her very kind invitation to dine here. What a lovely person who is so passionate about the cuisine and other aspects of the restaurant. A truly enriching experience!
We’ve frequent the Russell St branch when we craved a Malaysian classic Bah Kut Teh (BKT), to top things they had the dry version of BKT. They do it very well!
The Hawthorn brunch has just recently opened. The setting is cosy and beautiful with great looking classic furniture. They have toys and books to keep kids entertained and the entrance is wheelchair friendly.
The food is splendid and is of the same quality as the main branch. There is additional new dishes which are welcome additions to their already good menu. We had the dry BKT and stirfried pipis served with multigrain rice. We also had the opportunity to try the classic BKT soup and their lamb skewers. Everything was fantastic.
Happy to come back again and to recommend the place to friends. It’s the sort of place you’d be happy to bring guests to be entertained.
There is also a loyalty app that you can use to get further discounts during first and future visits - currently this is not available for use at the Hawthorn store.

One of the favorites in the area. I often come to have dinner if finish work late. The food is tasty like home made or even better, staff and owner are very friendly always and give good suggestions. Love the beef rib and soups! Good value for the price.

Interesting menu, small yet great options. We had the chicken skewers, although the chicken was a little dry the seasoning made these very nice. You can't go wrong with satay sauce. Bak khu teh was the pick of the bunch, tender meats in a very tasty broth, I would go back for this on its own. The staff were very friendly, suggestive on what was good and the food came out in a timely manner. Worth trying for sure.
