Have been frequenting this place for 2 years now and it’s become my family’s go-to place for good Cantonese food in a family friendly setting. Highly recommend the Taro Yam duck, deep fried chicken ribs in golden egg yolk and the deep fried flounder in spicy salt. Vincent at the front of house always provides prompt and friendly service.
This place has stepped up in the last few years. As a reasonably priced suburban Chinese restaurant, the food is fresh and crisp and the staff terrific. Encourage eat in to experience the food at its best.

A great local Chinese restaurant focused on my favourite Cantonese style food. I have been there numerous times and was impressed with the food so finally decided to do a review. I took my mum there for her birthday, had to call early to order the lobster noodle dish (a Chinese delight, very costly so they had to buy the ingredients in advance). The waiter was polite and friendly as usual.
Every time I go I would order the Golden Prawn (deep fried prawn wrapped in duck egg yolk) as it is one of my favourite dishes, and this place does it very well compared to some of the other casual restaurants I have been to. And we would also get the crispy roast duck as it also tastes a lot better than other places I have been to (the skin is crispy as advertised).
This time it was no exception. We started with the appetizer hot and sour soup, which by the way has a lot more tasty ingredients in it than the name lets on. It was our usual starter. Then came the lobster, oh was it fantastic! It was meaty and succulent, the juices and lobster goodness all mixed with the noodles, which made the noodles taste so delicious. Next was the crispy duck, and on this occasion it was a little disappointing that the duck skin was not crispy like all the other times. This was followed by steamed fish which my mum loved, then came the golden prawn which was perfect as usual. However, the last dish did not impress. It was supposed to be Dry Sauteed string beans, which is a traditional dish, the beans being cooked in a way that the final product is supposed to be a little dried out, mixed with minced meat and chili to bring out the spicy flavour of the dish. But it was not dry nor spicy, it was just a normal green beans dish with some minced meat, which I did not like. Maybe that was modified to suit the western taste. Lastly I want to give a special shout out to their salted fish and chicken fried rice, which is the best I have had any where.
Overall this place produces quality authentic Cantonese style food at a very reasonable price, I would recommend it to anyone looking for casual Chinese food.
Tong Lok is a family owned and operated restaurant that serves up delicious and homey Chinese food. Their menu options are extensive and their dishes are cooked with care and attention to flavour. Service is attentive and friendly regardless if you’re just getting some take away or dining in. Perfect place for some hearty food with the family or friends. Would recommend.
We ordered some food for pickup and very happy with it - awesome dumplings & best sweet and sour pork I've had recently! We haven't been here for ages after not having great food 4 years ago - the new management seems to have really turned the place around - delicious food!
Amazing food and friendly staff but service can be a bit slow. It's definitely worth the wait. Highly recommend the salt and pepper tofu for any tofu lovers.
Went here last night with my family :) server was super lovely. We had Set Menu C which was so delicious. All the food was very fresh and really tasty. Good flavours and good atmosphere :) will certainly go again!
Went in tonight to try after the new management had taken over - must say was a huge improvement. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Will be returning soon.
Had dinner at Tong Lok on Sunday night after checking out the Ashburton Community Festival. The mains were all quite large so we shared a few so that we could try more dishes.
We ordered the salt and pepper chicken, the honey pepper beef, and the Chinese broccoli with mushrooms. The beef was nicely cooked, very tender and well seasoned. The Chinese broccoli was nice and crunchy. The salt and pepper chicken was the least exciting of the dishes - unfortunately it wasn't as crispy as I'd hoped.
The service was quick and efficient, they quickly refilled our tea, and the food came out in a reasonable time. Overall it was a nice, enjoyable, and reasonably priced dinner, and I look forward to trying more of the dishes on the menu.
Food and service was excellent here. Had the salt and pepper beancurd at it was one of the best I have had. Big selection for vegetarians as well. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Excellent food, wonderful service. Had the honey pepper eye fillet, salt & pepper chicken and mushroom & chinese broccoli - all three were served fast, steaming hot and delicious. Highly recommended! :)
The Goose liver Pate Prawns was the best! I love how the eggplant didn't have skin on in their Eggplant Hot pot which was full of flavours. And don't get me started about their deep fried ice cream!
Tong Lok is under new management! Yay for that! The food that I ordered came piping hot, was fresh and delicious! I will definitely come back again.

It's delicious. My wife and I have had takeaway a few times and the food has been delivered. The entrees are tasty and generous in serving portions, such as the panfried dumplings. The stir fried shredded pork with chilli sauce is delicious as a main dish!

Hidden treasure in Ashburton. Ordered online and 20 mins later ready for pickup. Starters of Spring Rolls, Wontons and Dim Sims were all great. Main of Chicken Kung Pao with cashew nuts and Fried Rice were also top shelf. Fresh and hot. Family run and owned. BYO if you dine in. Recommended.
Took my son for dinner and had some delicious fresh food. We were served by a kind friendly family who really took care of us. They have have a steady local trade of takeaways but the food came very quickly. The spicy salt and pepper chicken was perfectly cooked, very tender. Deep fried ice creams were a definite hit. We will definitely come back and try some other dishes!
I almost don't want to tell you all how amazing this place is so you don't fill it up and I can't get a table! It's our local go to now.
