This was a bit of a surprise actually. Having walked past this bar multiple times daily I had no idea what was lurking in the basement, in a good way, not a monsters in a horror movie kinda way. It’s actually owned by the same people who opened Howler so it puzzles me why this isn’t more well known but it was a pleasant discovery all the same. We were here for a drink only but certainly appreciated the complimentary popcorn. The bar serves up casual fare if you are hungry. Great chill little spot a hop skip and a jump away from flinders st station
This is one of my favourite easy bars in the Melbourne CBD. I love the atmosphere and the decor down there, lots of plants, warm lighting kept a bit dim so it feels cozy and intimate, and usually a live DJ playing some chill beats.
If you can get them, the comfy couches and armchairs are fantastic places to set yourself and your friends up for the night, though there's almost never one available because they're in such high demand. This place gets cramped on busy nights and it's hard to find enough space for a large group. Any more than 6 people and you'll be struggling to find enough free seats from other tables to bring over.
Then there's the friendly bar staff who know their stuff, $9 pizzas (which would still taste phenomenal even if they weren't only $9), and one of the tastiest sweet apple ciders around (Pink Lady) at a reasonable price and on tap. At the end of the night, Flinders is less than a 5 minute tipsy stumble away, so getting home is easy too if you need to take public transport.
What's not to love?
Fiftyfive is located in a prime CBD location, yet many people walk past this basement bar every day without probably even realising it’s there. Located down a set of stairs on Elizabeth Street, near Flinders Street Station, Fiftyfive has been operating since 1999 and is a true gem of a bar.
Nice hidden place with intimate seating. Just came for drinks and felt right at home. Good to see it was quite crowded even on a Wednesday night. The menu is quite expensive though.
The best pub during my unidays for beer and pizza.
They have to change their menu and wines too.
Their beer is so boring and they need to have wines blending with food not restricting to Pizza...
But a decent place to dine and relax with mates....
Really nice bar to chill on a Saturday night. Friendly waitress, nice songs, heaps of beers choices, friendly people and heaps of chairs to to kick back and relax.
Service: 4/5
Selection of beers: 3.5/5(there was not much tab)
Music: 4/5
Atmosphere: 4.5/5
An awesome bar with great tunes, great pizza and great staff! Top location with well priced drinks and good atmosphere. Definitely worth checking out!
best basement bar in melbourne.
sexy staff with good vibes and great beer and cocktail knowledge.
always good music too, pull up a chair and nod your head :)
Definitely one of my favourite spots in Melbourne. Super friendly staff who know what they're doing and make everyone feel like regulars. Cheap food, great cocktails and a real nice selection of DJs. A definite stop on any night out in the city!
Without a doubt one of my favourite haunts in Melbourne. If you've had a big day of it and need a good bit of r&r, there's no better spot; sit back and take in the sights and smells, swing on the jungle gym or avail yourself of the ladies toilet.
The staff at this venue have a keen eye for an empty glass and a broken heart, never feel alone again as you prop up the bar in this subterranean shelter from the harsh realities of your life.
In a word.......good times.
Don't listen to the people below. They're all ombociles. The service was great, the staff were really nice, had a friendly chat. Atmosphere is exceptional. Nice music. Food is cheap, as is the beer. Definitely need to check this groovy place out. 10/10 would bang.

Fiftyfive is probably one of the best lesser known bars in the city. You’ll find drinks and lounge music Monday to Wednesday, and DJ’s Thursday onwards.
The diffused lighting, comfy environment and friendly staff make this a great spot to come for a relaxing drink and conversation, there’s a lovely ambience to the space.
Due to the budget cuts this winter... better stick to nice cocktails in crazy good environment. The place to be over the weekend with great staff and nice vibes. Highly recommended for even one drink to try!
I love this bar for its diverse vibes. You can slump on a couch with a whiskey and enjoy a chill conversation, or sit at the bar and enjoy the mastery up close. Lovely staff; sexy lighting and cool tunes. Can’t wait to go back with my girlfriends
Best LAST STOP on a night out.
Friendly staff, great security and lovely underground vibes.
Located extremely close to Flinders Street, this is the perfect leg for the start or end of your night.
Drinks are fairly priced (spirits) and mixed well.
Music and atmosphere is definitely welcoming, and the patronage is also good, never seems to have troublesome or disruptive guests.
Would recommend for decent sized groups (4+) trying to catch up and have a good time.
My favourite bar in Melbourne...actually anywhere. Such a great vibe and friendly staff. We were just walking past one night and stumbled into it. It took me a while to remember the place. I remember the great vibe, the cool beers and synthesiser wall paper in the toilet. I wish we had something similar in my city. Actually probably better we don't as I would probably never leave.
Love a place with low lighting and a cool toilet. Unpretentious vibes, laidback, delicious pizza, great cocktails, and lots of comfy places to sit. Everywhere you look is some interesting eclectic piece.
