This was a bit of a surprise actually. Having walked past this bar multiple times daily I had no idea what was lurking in the basement, in a good way, not a monsters in a horror movie kinda way. It’s actually owned by the same people who opened Howler so it puzzles me why this isn’t more well known but it was a pleasant discovery all the same. We were here for a drink only but certainly appreciated the complimentary popcorn. The bar serves up casual fare if you are hungry. Great chill little spot a hop skip and a jump away from flinders st station
This is one of my favourite easy bars in the Melbourne CBD. I love the atmosphere and the decor down there, lots of plants, warm lighting kept a bit dim so it feels cozy and intimate, and usually a live DJ playing some chill beats.
If you can get them, the comfy couches and armchairs are fantastic places to set yourself and your friends up for the night, though there's almost never one available because they're in such high demand. This place gets cramped on busy nights and it's hard to find enough space for a large group. Any more than 6 people and you'll be struggling to find enough free seats from other tables to bring over.
Then there's the friendly bar staff who know their stuff, $9 pizzas (which would still taste phenomenal even if they weren't only $9), and one of the tastiest sweet apple ciders around (Pink Lady) at a reasonable price and on tap. At the end of the night, Flinders is less than a 5 minute tipsy stumble away, so getting home is easy too if you need to take public transport.
What's not to love?
Fiftyfive is located in a prime CBD location, yet many people walk past this basement bar every day without probably even realising it’s there. Located down a set of stairs on Elizabeth Street, near Flinders Street Station, Fiftyfive has been operating since 1999 and is a true gem of a bar.
