Great place to get a bowl of delicious congee - my favourite is the century egg and pork with the Chinese gluten sticks (combo). Such an affordable and satisfying meal. My parents always eat there when they are in the city and I decided to give it a go. Can't wait to return for another bowl!

This brand is super tasty, the egg pancake with fried doughnut and pork floss is a 'go to' for a quick breakfast. Only downfall is that the staff are hard to communicate with which is why it's so popular with Chinese yet not so big amongst westerners.. but i do suggest for people to opt for this as a cheaper alternative to a cafe breakfast.. it's delicious.
My favourite brekkie spot for some good old Chinese food.
Soy milk is a must have when visiting this store.
Congee and Jian Bing is also a must try!
Love coming here for cheap Taiwanese street food/snacks. Don't expect anything fancy or healthy though. Service isn't that great but to be honest for a small 'fast food' place like this, it really doesn't matter. Yum!

Tried their bahn mi or vietnamese baguette today. I ordered no.7 grilled pork sausage roll. The baguette was really crispy and the sausage was so good! It has Vietnamese sauce which is quite strong it might be too strong to someone but i like it.
quite a range of Asian snack food and drinks that I have never tried before, and that I want to try.. but oh, those calories!! I miss eating hawker street food in Asia, so I was happy this chain started in Melbourne a few years ago.
A great place for Chinese style breakfast, normally I only get takeaway. Congee with century egg combo with Chinese doughnut is my favorite, pretty much I order the same thing every time. Will always come back for more!
Nice place for to go snacks. Affordable and fast, but tasty as well. Tried the pork pie, the bread was thin and had a nice bite in it. The pork filling was tasty and savory. Made it a very satisfying snack. Almost like flat gyoza.
It's the only place opened at 9am. Besides the 24/7 ramen joint down the street. I was craving dumplings so gave mr. Kitchen a try! It's pretty yummy, especially when you don't feel like having a 7 eleven sandwich for breakfast! Meat filling is generous, price is good!
Congee & donut stick is the most traditional and Chinese signature breakfast, those in Mr. Kitchen are not authentic but still taste good. It's hard to find donut stick made in thw original way, isn't? lol
Always walked past here (located underground melb central) and always wanted to try it and finally did. They had alot of variety of foods. I wouldn't call it viet or Chinese per say. Prob just a range of asian dishes. From pancakes to Chinese donuts etc. def. try their ranges of fresh drinks - love the coconut juice and winter melon w beans! $4 in a takeaway cup cant go wrong! The soy bean is nice too! Mmmmmm.....
The preserved egg and pork congee is always comforting. It's light and well seasoned, although a bit expensive in my opinion. But would be back for the congee when my cravings call for it.
I've been deathly sick for the last few days and this has been my go to spot for preserved egg and lean pork congee. It does not dissapoint. Definitely would recommend!

Just to clarify this is NOT a Vietnamese joint! It's a place for old school Chinese breakfast and snacks(they do have banh mi though). Great variety of drinks and hearty snacks, kinda like your Macca's all day breakfast situation. And no they DON'T have pho.

Love their pancake that make by mung bean. With egg, chili, crispy donut. Really delicious!
Also our another favourite on winter, tofu soup.
The only downside was they don't accept card. CASH only.
It is definitely not Vietnamese! It is Chinese, actually northern part of the China. The pancake is quite good even not as good as what I had in China, but still very good. The porridge is over priced but the pancake and other food are all very nice.
I'm not sure why this place is listed as Vietnamese? It is NOT Vietnamese. It's Chinese, and specifically Taiwanese street eats.
If you want cheap, quick and good Taiwanese street food, this is the place to go. The congee that we had was honest and smooth and filled our appetites and cravings immediately.
Very very surprised by how good the BBQ skewers were. The squid tentacles and chicken giblets both had a lovely smoky char-grilled flavour and taste and the chicken kebab was juicy and tender, all which seems to suggest that some thought and care were given when BBQ-ing them. Have to admit that my first impression was that it would be average as the skewers were not made to order, unlike the pancake with donut. Nice surprise aside, I was bummed that the chicken gristle was unavailable, would mean that I will be coming back to try them and also the pancake with pork floss. Noticed a lot of people ordering the pancakes which is always a good indication of quality.
Ordered the meat bum, skewers, beijing style yogurt, and meat ball roll
They taste like those I had in my childhood in China!
So many things to order. Will have the spicy hot pot next time when going, and the lamb skewer.
How interesting it is to eat street food in the shop
I had pancake with doughnuts, egg and pork floss. They were a good combination though the doughnuts were not crispy as expected and they were slightly oily. Pork floss is always good with anything so the dish couldn't really go wrong. The pancakes were very filling and it would go down really well with hot tea.
So...no single food item here is amazing ...but for the large range of very traditional food items and drinks (at cheap prices), I will definitely be coming back every now and then. These foods represent Chinese comfort food so I always enjoy myself. I just don't understand their banh mi menu - why is it there??
Good place for a Chinese breakfast fix! Food is dished up over the counter almost immediately, and you can grab a Mr Kitchen drink for yourself from the fridge. The price is cheap so you can never really complain, but I don't think it's as good as their box hill store.
Quick, tasty, easy. Mr Kitchen is a godsend when it comes to quick and easy meals whenever I'm craving some traditional Chinese food. I love the porridges and the pies especially. Sure, the pies are greasy as hell but it's fatty mince wrapped and deep fried so it's kind of expected. The porridges are great for when I'm feeling under the weather and want comfort food.
Excellent congee and don't forget the condiments as well. Great selection of grilled items on skewers. Affordable, yummy and also like the selection of pre prepared drinks in the fridge.
This shop offers quite a few unique chinese menu, which are not usually sold at your normal chinese restaurants. I am talking about congee (chinese porridge), chinese crepe, savoury skewers, and traditional deep-fried snacks.
Eventhough there are a few dine-in tables here, I would recommend to do take-away instead. The tiny space, overpowering smell of spices in the air, and constant noise from behind the counter do not contribute to a pleasant dine-in experience. Luckily, the State Library across the road offers a great spot to enjoy your meal from here. Sit down on the grass, feeling the wind, and munching on those yummy chinese doughnout (yes it's greasy, but I don't care).
All in all, I am happy to have this place accessible in the Melbourne CBD. Yes, most of the customers are young asians who are after their traditional home-town snacks, but please don't let this deter you from having a new experience tasting awesome centuries-old chinese delicacies.

I quite like Mr Kitchen with its bright yellow exterior and it's hawker style food and cheap prices. It serves favourite hawker dishes such as congee, banh mi, fishball skewers, Asian style savoury pancakes and herbal sweet drinks, among other things. There's about six types of congee on offer. I love congee - the thick, savoury rice porridge is so comforting when you're recovering from illness or when you need some serious warming up on a cold, cold day. For $7.50 you get a reasonable size tub of congee and a wickedly delicious fried Chinese doughnut stick for dunking (those on a diet or have high cholesterol should probably avoid this... if you can!) . The preserved egg and pork congee came with a fair amount of diced up preserved egg (so many places skimp on this) with lots of thin strands of pork. The congee really hit the spot, as did the doughnut. I've also tried the ginger and duck congee. This had a faint ducky flavour but, really, I thought it was more like a pork congee. There were lots of slivers of tender ginger which gave the congee a nice zingyness to it. The doughnuts are morish and, my goodness, you'll need some tea to wash it down (or better yet, lots of exercise). It's oily, it's fried and unapologetically unhealthy - think of it as croutons on steroids. It's a heart attack waiting to happen but, man, it'll be a delicious way to go! Verdict: we liked it a lot. Overall I don't know about their other fare but I know the congee will be a go-to cheap lunch for me. You can definitely eat for less than 10 bucks here. Plus, it means I can also eat the doughnut stick!
Don’t know why this place has not reached 5 star when the food is just so good. Not sure but by the look and type of dishes they serves looks like a typical Asian street food which is just amazing. The price is reasonable and the potion too. What I ordered was just a cold noodles and they just made it right there and then! A lot of places these days don’t make fresh food since they cut back on staff but beside being busy and having less staff this place still does look after their customer’s need.
Will definitely recommend!
Look, they're friendly, communicate well, the food is flavoursome, and it's relatively well priced. They have good hours... What more do you want?
These bbq chicken bread rolls are SO good! New favourite
