Review Mr Kitchen - Melbourne

Tan T
Don’t know why this place has not reached 5 star when the food is just so good. Not sure but by the look and type of dishes they serves looks like a typical Asian street food which is just amazing. The price is reasonable and the potion too. What I ordered was just a cold noodles and they just made it right there and then! A lot of places these days don’t make fresh food since they cut back on staff but beside being busy and having less staff this place still does look after their customer’s need. Will definitely recommend!

Good price .Dumplings was okay, Radish cake was very tasty with chilli sause :)

Wasting money on inedible foods. The rice roll was the most terrible . Really sorry to say, but it was cooked unevenly, most of the rice were overcooked, or I say porridge to be exact but part of them still grain. Other items, especially bun roll and red bean bun were extremely dry. And the sausage taste and smell old. Wondering how many days it has been kept and still served to customers. Sorry to write this but people need to know what they paid for.

Look, they're friendly, communicate well, the food is flavoursome, and it's relatively well priced. They have good hours... What more do you want?

Ordered those things through Ubereat for $35 and only got half size of the pancake. Definitely will not order on here anymore.

These bbq chicken bread rolls are SO good! New favourite

I went to mr kitchen in the food court at Melbourne central. So disappointed Ordered a roast pork roll. No pate, no spring onion, no chilli, no cucumber, no coriander. The pork came from a takeaway container, so not sure if it was even fresh. Didn’t taste fresh. No crunchy crackle. The roll was lovely though. Basically had a roll with pork, lettuce and carrot. 😩

They used to have good banh mi a few years back. Now it's just a bit of meat, tiny amount of carrot, and a touch of lettuce for $7. Not even banh mi anymore, just a bad lunch roll. Mine also had a piece of bony cartilidge inside the meat, so could have choked or chipped a tooth too

Ordered Original flavored pancake with doughnut filling, doughnut inside was very soggy and chewy 😢, pancake is terribly thick. This is my first time to try this store and will be the last time .....

Good place if you want to satisfy your nostalgic memories of the middle kingdom, or just need a jianbing fix. Quality so so..

I always see this place packed in the morning so thought I would try it out. I ordered the pork and preserved egg come and was really disappointed. Very little pork or preserved egg, flavour was very bland and watery. Could have done with some salt. A nice addition would have been some spring onion, white pepper or sesame oil but none offered. Overall, would not recommend.

Their food is okay, the only thing that bothers me is that they serve their food cold so that’s disappointing and their porridge taste like nothing so I would not recommend it

Great place to get a bowl of delicious congee - my favourite is the century egg and pork with the Chinese gluten sticks (combo). Such an affordable and satisfying meal. My parents always eat there when they are in the city and I decided to give it a go. Can't wait to return for another bowl!

Traditional Chinese breakfast. Taste average but with quite a bit to f variety. I came at 8am, their pancake and sour and spicy soup was only lukewarm.
Crabapples For Lunch
This is more of a 3.5 stars. The quality of the food here varies depending on what you order in my opinion, but in general it's a no-fuss place to get Chinese snacks or a light meal at affordable prices. Especially popular with the Chinese living in the CBD.

We've had their congee and their soya bean drink and both were decent - would consider ordering again. We've also tried their dough fritters (you tiao) and red bean dough pancakes but both were somewhat disappointing. The dough fritters and pancakes were in general too thick and doughy rather than crispy. You can't expect much here I guess but in Singapore you can get some incredibly crispy and light dough fritters, so the ones here inevitably disappoint. Same with their red bean pancakes - very little red bean paste inside and a very thick outer layer.

We tried their dough fritter wrapped in a Chinese crepe, and likewise wasn't really impressed. It was really just dough wrapped in dough to be honest, but I'm sure it's a snack that Taiwanese and Hong Kongers are used to so I may just not be able to appreciate it. I do prefer the Chinese crepes done by Bing Boy though - much more stretchy and tasty, though they seem to have disappeared from Melbourne now.

Prices are generally cheap so it's tempting to stop by for a snack, just don't expect too much of the food.

Came for lunch today. Tasty congee as usual, but the donut stick was too oily. a bit disappointed. I have an idea that it'd be great if you sell small donut sticks for $1 each instead of the massive one at $2.5 which is too big to but in a take away congee :))) Anw, thanks for the delicious congee, chief =))))
Tasting Notes Melbourne
This brand is super tasty, the egg pancake with fried doughnut and pork floss is a 'go to' for a quick breakfast. Only downfall is that the staff are hard to communicate with which is why it's so popular with Chinese yet not so big amongst westerners.. but i do suggest for people to opt for this as a cheaper alternative to a cafe breakfast.. it's delicious.

I usually always stop by after a long day to take away some Taiwanese sausages because they’re great there! But today my views on Mr Kitchen changed completely after purchasing a plain donut cake. I took a bite and realise it smelt very toxic and it turned out it smelt like windex chemical to clean the windows. Surely the staff did not remove the food before spraying the windows with Windex and still proceeded to sell the food. I refused to eat it because the smell was just chemicals. Very very disappointed and won’t be returning.

Stopped by for a take away before heading off for a road trip, I had the glutinous rice ball & asian donut .. the glutinous rice is ok but the Asian donut was very dry & wasn’t what I was expecting.. Overall pretty basic probably wouldn’t try this place again..

please train your staff to at least smile and say thank you. no friendly service and manner. love the food but costumer service was disappointing
Liuxxx
My favourite brekkie spot for some good old Chinese food.

Soy milk is a must have when visiting this store.

Congee and Jian Bing is also a must try!
Katherine
Love coming here for cheap Taiwanese street food/snacks. Don't expect anything fancy or healthy though. Service isn't that great but to be honest for a small 'fast food' place like this, it really doesn't matter. Yum!
KLLYXNG
Wasn’t bad for a quick feed as I was craving congee. I really expected it to be watered down but it really wasn’t, and the bottomless toppings weren’t bad because of the deep fried chinese donut!
Piggyeatalot
Had a quick snack of sausage here, it’s cheap I guess and it doesn’t taste too bad and it good for a speedy snack, but it was nothing to scream home about
Foodielover
This is one of the worst food experience i ever had. Food is simply rubbush order the grilled chicken roll the meat is super hard and the bread too. Also order the berries drink which feel like drinking water with sugar. Staff has attitude when you ask them questions about the menu. The rating truly reflect the quality
Joanne Liu
The overall feel of this restaurant is quite oily and humid, not amazing. However, I really do enjoy their congee. The chicken and mushroom is really tasty (quite hot at the start though). There aren't many pieces of mushroom in it, but the texture is perfect. Unfortunately, the atmosphere of the place doesn't give me the best feeling, so I only come here when my boyfriend is craving congee haha. :)
Convivialsins
hahaha ummmm walked past.. i weren’t hungry... saw a whole bunch of young’ns at the counter ordering. Being a glut I am I’m drawn in.. they’re order congee take away and some snack food .

Without consulting any food gods I order a ginger duck congee for $6.50. Immediate thought hey not bad value. Upon sitting diwn and trying it... hmmm I can make my own that could be chef hat rated compared to this. If u want MSG WATER with rice. Come here. WIR?? Haha no way!

A Chinese fast-food joint. (3.5⭐)

Ambience: The place is bit small, it feels ans smells bit oily and probably dirty for some people as they are doing some cooking at the counter, but it's understandable. There are a few seats inside but not many, lots of people came for take-aways.

Service: There was a short line when i arrived on a Wednesday night, but didn't take too long. The person serving me was "okay" nice, english wasn't much of a problem. Food is already prepared so all she needs to do is scoop it out into a container, thus it's a real fast-food.

Food: I had pork with century egg congee. It was actually pretty good. Texture was not too runny or thick, just right. It's also smooth, the century egg was pretty generous and the pork pieces were also decently proportionate. (But it will really depend on the scoop and your luck 😅) portion was pretty filling but bit smaller than usual.

Price: It's cheaper than most eateries selling congees but again with smaller portion, but I still think it's pretty good pricing.

YUM: pork and century egg congee
NAH: none

photos: pork and century egg congee

( follow for more!✨)

xx,joelle
Eat_today_diet_tomorrow
Tried their bahn mi or vietnamese baguette today. I ordered no.7 grilled pork sausage roll. The baguette was really crispy and the sausage was so good! It has Vietnamese sauce which is quite strong it might be too strong to someone but i like it.
Ordered pancake with egg, donut and pork floss. Lacked flavour, and messed up my order. I asked for spring onion, coriander, and chili in it. Even though she double checked with her co-worker about the order, she just shoved it in the bag and gave it to me anyway. When asked about where’s my spring onion, coriander and chili, she had the rudest attitude, took it from my hands and spread the smallest amount of chili oil (like one drop), all over the bag and shoved it back in my face. Whoever was working on March 13th 2018 at 1:40pm, get fired please.
TimInMelb
quite a range of Asian snack food and drinks that I have never tried before, and that I want to try.. but oh, those calories!! I miss eating hawker street food in Asia, so I was happy this chain started in Melbourne a few years ago.
Sylv
Ordered the chef's special dumplings and egg wrap with doughnut and pork floss. The wrap lacked flavour and I thought the doughnut would be fried till golden brown with a bit of crunch, but unfortunately it was chewy and greasy 😥 had to leave them out and just eat the wrap alone. The dumplings were very nice and steaming hot, although the skin was a bit thicker for my liking but the prawn and pork filling was fresh which was the highlight 😊
Amanda
A great place for Chinese style breakfast, normally I only get takeaway. Congee with century egg combo with Chinese doughnut is my favorite, pretty much I order the same thing every time. Will always come back for more!
Ferry Gondo
Nice place for to go snacks. Affordable and fast, but tasty as well. Tried the pork pie, the bread was thin and had a nice bite in it. The pork filling was tasty and savory. Made it a very satisfying snack. Almost like flat gyoza.
Rizka Natasya
tried several items from their menu and was happy enough to come back several times. go for their donut stick and soy milk and you will be full enough for a couple hours. the price isn't so bad either! however, what's lacking is that how oily the food can get but hey, can't complain at all when the food is this cheap.
Piggy 小猪
Terrible!!! The pie was barely any meat, Chinese donut was really oily that u take a bite oil drips out of it and the customer service was horrible staff seems don't care about u, they are rude and not a bit of manners shown. I work in hospitality too that's definitely not how u treat your customers. Not going back again 👎👎👎

Better next visit you have changed the credit card/EFTPOS surcharge or I am going to report you to Australian Commission and Consumer Affair. Spending $6 and got surcharge $0.50 it is 84% surcharge, you know it is illegal??
MY NAmE IS Lee
We have been to Mr Kitchen for quite a few times. We have had a few bad customer service experience in there before, so we stopped going back for a while, but today we thought we would give another try. The soy milk always good. The pancake was okay , not impressed. The staff in there was okay better than before ,at least was not rude.
Vina
Good choice to have snack time but the place does not provide much space. Bought sausage for only 2.80$. A bit too oily for me. But it's okay
Good Food Good Mood
Mr kitchen is the very definition of cheap and cheerful. My friend from Hong Kong got me onto this chain. It's not a place that would typically draw me in as it's quite authentic budget Asian street food but preconceptions aside I actually quite enjoyed it. I tried the beef pie, donut stick and grilled chicken roll. Wasn't quite game enough for the red been and taro congee but those sorts of traditional options are available if you are up for something different. There's a lot of complaints about the service but I've been here a few times and not experienced any issues. You certainly don't have to wait very long for your food but the seating is limited. Good for a quick and affordable bite
Sabella Zhang
TERRIBLE SERVICE!!! The blonde short hair girl is so rude! It's quite disgusting. Their food is not as good as I expected. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Vivilovesfood
Girls were chatting instead of serving customers even they saw people were waiting to be served. The behaviour really keeps customers away. It's nothing to do with 'cheap food, you get want you pay for.' They just don't have the basic customer service. The food I ordered was definitely below average. Will not go back again.
Piyarat Pinthong
Loves donuts cake and soy milk ever, made like I bought in Thailand from my country. I been here every week with friends and sometimes with family.
YueNing Zhu
TERRIBLE !! a shop assistant with a short blond hair was so rude, i will never go there to eat food again because of that staff. i asked"all of your restaurant's staffs are rude for others?" she side:"yes, you can not eat here if you can't bear!"she shout me loudly.
our sparked off the quarrel was i want to choose food and the staff had a very bad tone to take with me, she side"can't you see i am doing something else?(means am a blind.)"
Dzhu471018
So terrible service!!!!!!!
The food is nice but the service is so rude and impolite as well. I have to say it is the most bad attitude I met in mel restaurants.
Dion Cho Yan Wong
Really poor service. Got all my take away foods all over the bench. The girl serve me just like she doesn't care. She sound really angry, and when she given me back the change, she just throw on to the bench while I had my hand there waiting for her.
Mizpiggy
I love traditional snacks like fried donuts and congee. I think they are a great combination however first time to mr kitchen and I was disappointed. The congee was not cooked through and the rice was actually hard rather than the soft consistency you expect from congee. Now I am a huge congee fan and usually orders preserved egg and pork all the time at yum cha and I have to say I was disappointed. The fried donut was greasy and oily and not soft and fluffy on the inside which is what fresh fried donut should be. Overall given how close the location is to china town and the availability of much better congee places around, the quality of the food needs to improve. Value for money, the small portion size and actual taste, you can get better elsewhere. Give this a miss and venture into china town for better quality.
Nomafoodic Chipineats
It's the only place opened at 9am. Besides the 24/7 ramen joint down the street. I was craving dumplings so gave mr. Kitchen a try! It's pretty yummy, especially when you don't feel like having a 7 eleven sandwich for breakfast! Meat filling is generous, price is good!
Dí María
Food is normal, since when Chinese food has cheese inside lol.
Btw the male staff was rude when he doubt the customer didn't pay for the food while I already paid.
Donutsam
I swung past Mr Kitchen one afternoon for a quick Chinese bite. On this occasion I opted for the pancake donut and I have been here for the fried breads and the congee. Most of the offering at Mr Kitchen is fair. For me, the congee needs a bit more of a seasoning to come anywhere close to the ones I dig. The breads are alright but toss them in the oven for a bit when home to achieve proper crunchy fried goodness.
David
Worst experience ever! The waitress who made the pancake was so rude! She took the wrong order and threw my food on the counter. I like the food but I'll never return.
Cookielessvee
Been wanting to try out the congee. Nice flavouring and the congee is made just right. Though the portions are small, you cant really expect much for $6. The plain donut cake is pretty good, compact and filling.
FoodieCCC
Congee & donut stick is the most traditional and Chinese signature breakfast, those in Mr. Kitchen are not authentic but still taste good. It's hard to find donut stick made in thw original way, isn't? lol
Doran
This place is exactly what you'd expect: reasonably priced Asian snacks in a no-frills environment. The shop is small but is airy and bright. All the hot food is on display and well presented. The Duck & Ginger Congee was good, the Pork Pancake was also decent (but a bit stale). Sometimes you just want a bite of something substantial & savoury to eat without spending $15 on a full meal portion. This place is easy and perfect for that.
Haba Jiba
After months of not having visiting this eatery, I decided to visit again for some takeout. Yet even after close to a year, the same manager with disgustingly bad customer service skills still remained in charge. It is unsurprising that under such a poorly-trained manager that the business is not nearly as busy as it once was. The servers are also incapable of charging customers the correct account (even though it's written on their own menu). My experience with street vendors around the world, even in Shanghai and Beijing (where this food is supposedly inspired from) has been far superior to those offered by the staff in this eatery. Frankly it would be unsurprising if this eatery were to be closed in the foreseeable future given the workers and manager are so poorly trained and incapable of communicating in English.
SueyLuey
Always walked past here (located underground melb central) and always wanted to try it and finally did. They had alot of variety of foods. I wouldn't call it viet or Chinese per say. Prob just a range of asian dishes. From pancakes to Chinese donuts etc. def. try their ranges of fresh drinks - love the coconut juice and winter melon w beans! $4 in a takeaway cup cant go wrong! The soy bean is nice too! Mmmmmm.....
We Nomz
The preserved egg and pork congee is always comforting. It's light and well seasoned, although a bit expensive in my opinion. But would be back for the congee when my cravings call for it.
Ceryle Kanadi
I ordered beef pancake with cheese inside. It taste average, and if we buy it for take away,it's hard to eat from the paper wrap. The price is a bit expensive too, since it is not filling for snacks.
YUXIPANDA
I've been deathly sick for the last few days and this has been my go to spot for preserved egg and lean pork congee. It does not dissapoint. Definitely would recommend!
The Serious Cat Sensei!
Just to clarify this is NOT a Vietnamese joint! It's a place for old school Chinese breakfast and snacks(they do have banh mi though). Great variety of drinks and hearty snacks, kinda like your Macca's all day breakfast situation. And no they DON'T have pho.
Tom
I ordered the traditional taiwanese noodle. Was good enough for me but i prefer noodle kingdom, although for $9 you can't really complain. The pork crackling jelly was a surprise. I never had this before but this is a perfect snack to eat with beers
Henry
Ordered Mung bean pancakes with doughnut, vegetarian dumplings, spring onion pancake, tea eggs and soy bean drink, spring onion pancake was the best, drink was nice, dumplings were passable, the rest wasn't great, tea eggs lacked flavour, mung bean pancakes were bland and dry, tried to flavour with preserved bean curd, yuck, staff were nice enough, but utensils weren't clean and the bathroom on the 3rd floor is a heck of climb, and a very steep descent, might return if nowhere else to go late on a Sunday night
Melbourne Vegetarian
Love their pancake that make by mung bean. With egg, chili, crispy donut. Really delicious!
Also our another favourite on winter, tofu soup.
The only downside was they don't accept card. CASH only.
Kimi Pangilinan
Definitely not Vietnamese as selection was Chinese/Taiwanese at best. But nonetheless the Banh Mi was pretty good so I'd totally recommend that to people.
Shijing Wang
It is definitely not Vietnamese! It is Chinese, actually northern part of the China. The pancake is quite good even not as good as what I had in China, but still very good. The porridge is over priced but the pancake and other food are all very nice.
Raph M
I'm not sure why this place is listed as Vietnamese? It is NOT Vietnamese. It's Chinese, and specifically Taiwanese street eats.

If you want cheap, quick and good Taiwanese street food, this is the place to go. The congee that we had was honest and smooth and filled our appetites and cravings immediately.
Hello. Imnikki
Very very surprised by how good the BBQ skewers were. The squid tentacles and chicken giblets both had a lovely smoky char-grilled flavour and taste and the chicken kebab was juicy and tender, all which seems to suggest that some thought and care were given when BBQ-ing them. Have to admit that my first impression was that it would be average as the skewers were not made to order, unlike the pancake with donut. Nice surprise aside, I was bummed that the chicken gristle was unavailable, would mean that I will be coming back to try them and also the pancake with pork floss. Noticed a lot of people ordering the pancakes which is always a good indication of quality.
Tracey Lin
Ordered the meat bum, skewers, beijing style yogurt, and meat ball roll

They taste like those I had in my childhood in China!

So many things to order. Will have the spicy hot pot next time when going, and the lamb skewer.

How interesting it is to eat street food in the shop
Tony
The checkout girl was very patient and was happy to explain how their hotpot thing works even though we only asked out of curiosity. The thing we had was alright evem though it was quite sickening after a few bites. The Vietnamese rolls were overpriced. Not sure why this restaurant is categorised as a Vietnamese restaurant.
Meowth
I had pancake with doughnuts, egg and pork floss. They were a good combination though the doughnuts were not crispy as expected and they were slightly oily. Pork floss is always good with anything so the dish couldn't really go wrong. The pancakes were very filling and it would go down really well with hot tea.
Joy
So...no single food item here is amazing ...but for the large range of very traditional food items and drinks (at cheap prices), I will definitely be coming back every now and then. These foods represent Chinese comfort food so I always enjoy myself. I just don't understand their banh mi menu - why is it there??
Joy
Good place for a Chinese breakfast fix! Food is dished up over the counter almost immediately, and you can grab a Mr Kitchen drink for yourself from the fridge. The price is cheap so you can never really complain, but I don't think it's as good as their box hill store.
Avolette
Wanted a Chinese fix so I had some good ol' congee. I liked how it wasn't too gluggy ...you know how sometimes you get that disgusting slightly hardened layer of skin...there was none of that here. I had the preserved egg and pork congee, which was satisfyingly salty.
Donut stick was delicious and slightly chewy like a good donut stick should be.
Service was quick and polite.
Lots of reasonably priced other snacks here too, to jazz up your congee experience.
A. Chan
Been down with hay fever these past few days and have been craving for some porridge! My tip is to get the porridge ONLY during the day and not in the evening or you will be eating very watery porridge (end of the pot, perhaps?)

The drinks at the front were incorrectly placed! Ended up drinking some weird herbal drink instead of sour plum :(
Julie
Quick, tasty, easy. Mr Kitchen is a godsend when it comes to quick and easy meals whenever I'm craving some traditional Chinese food. I love the porridges and the pies especially. Sure, the pies are greasy as hell but it's fatty mince wrapped and deep fried so it's kind of expected. The porridges are great for when I'm feeling under the weather and want comfort food.
Food For Thought
Changes to serving size for takeaway. I like the congee at Mr Kitchen a lot but was very disappointed to see that they have change their takeaway packs to half the size it used to be.
Ally
Excellent congee and don't forget the condiments as well. Great selection of grilled items on skewers. Affordable, yummy and also like the selection of pre prepared drinks in the fridge.
Tim Chuma
I can't stop farting!. I knew I should have steered clear of the "pies" and just had the banh mi. Just average for the pork meat ball banh mi and the donut stick was very oily.
100squared
Chinese breakfast. I was so excited when this was opening because I've tried the food at their box hill shop and the doughnut sticks are fresh as, no more buying packaged ones in grocery stores! I love the plain round doughnuts too. What I'd wish for more other popular Chinese breakfast varieties are glutinous rice with chicken (nuo mi ji), pork bun (cha sau bao), chicken bun, custard bun, and all bun varieties that we can only get from some Chinese restaurants near chinatown at lunch time. Since it's also Vietnamese theme, how about their strong and sweet coffee?
Frog
Only myself to blame. I did not add my rating to this place because I did not try any of the great looking iced teas, soy drinks, hot foods or meat sticks. I went instead for the signature dish of “doughnut crepe” (I did not get the name). It was exactly as announced: 2 thick doughnut sticks -heavy and tasteless- wrapped in a crepe with egg, spring onion and flavouring sauces. I could have added meat, cheese, etc... I’ll classify this offering in the same category as the deep fried mars bar or Ohio’s deep fried battered butter stick: a culinary abomination. I should not complain, I got exactly what I asked for; I can only blame jetlag for this complete lapse of judgement. By the way, the lunch time staff was really lovely.
Beekeeper1988
Food taste bad , feel like plastic. Staff this morning was rude, she saw me waiting but decide to serve other customers came after me, then she look at me like im alien or something....food taste like plastic

This shop offers quite a few unique chinese menu, which are not usually sold at your normal chinese restaurants. I am talking about congee (chinese porridge), chinese crepe, savoury skewers, and traditional deep-fried snacks.

Eventhough there are a few dine-in tables here, I would recommend to do take-away instead. The tiny space, overpowering smell of spices in the air, and constant noise from behind the counter do not contribute to a pleasant dine-in experience. Luckily, the State Library across the road offers a great spot to enjoy your meal from here. Sit down on the grass, feeling the wind, and munching on those yummy chinese doughnout (yes it's greasy, but I don't care).

All in all, I am happy to have this place accessible in the Melbourne CBD. Yes, most of the customers are young asians who are after their traditional home-town snacks, but please don't let this deter you from having a new experience tasting awesome centuries-old chinese delicacies.
Katherine Chiu
Mr Kitchen has one store in the city and the other in Box Hill. I went to the city one of course . Mr Kitchen is a Chinese Vietnamese place which sells street snacks. Think Bings and Congee, but the city one does skewers and hotpots. Stuff for the hotpot They are mainly a take away place but they do have some seating for their patrons. I went on a few visits. The first one I just went for morning tea/late breakfast of Jian Bing and Chinese donut ($6). It was eggy a little more than Bing Boy but still good. They put spring onions and herbs in this and then they brush on the soy sauce. You can watch them make the crepes from the outside and they make it when you order it. It was so hot when I got it, but delicious. The second time around I went for the congee and the skewers. The congee was $5.50 and fed me but it was bland. I would have expected a little bit of salt or vinegar which is offered at the place. But the fish and tofu skewers were damm fine. No hold that... GREAT!!!!! ceiling- I love the colours Menu with the bad spelling With congee there are a few flavours to choose from in the display and when you order it they will put it in a takeaway bowl even for eat in customers. The congee was a little watery at times and gluggy at times. I might only just come back for their Jian Bings, donuts and skewers
Eat And Be Merry Crew
I quite like Mr Kitchen with its bright yellow exterior and it's hawker style food and cheap prices. It serves favourite hawker dishes such as congee, banh mi, fishball skewers, Asian style savoury pancakes and herbal sweet drinks, among other things. There's about six types of congee on offer. I love congee - the thick, savoury rice porridge is so comforting when you're recovering from illness or when you need some serious warming up on a cold, cold day. For $7.50 you get a reasonable size tub of congee and a wickedly delicious fried Chinese doughnut stick for dunking (those on a diet or have high cholesterol should probably avoid this... if you can!) . The preserved egg and pork congee came with a fair amount of diced up preserved egg (so many places skimp on this) with lots of thin strands of pork. The congee really hit the spot, as did the doughnut. I've also tried the ginger and duck congee. This had a faint ducky flavour but, really, I thought it was more like a pork congee. There were lots of slivers of tender ginger which gave the congee a nice zingyness to it. The doughnuts are morish and, my goodness, you'll need some tea to wash it down (or better yet, lots of exercise). It's oily, it's fried and unapologetically unhealthy - think of it as croutons on steroids. It's a heart attack waiting to happen but, man, it'll be a delicious way to go! Verdict: we liked it a lot. Overall I don't know about their other fare but I know the congee will be a go-to cheap lunch for me. You can definitely eat for less than 10 bucks here. Plus, it means I can also eat the doughnut stick!
