Affordable, tasty Thai food! The $10 lunches are perfect for someone who works close, and the menu is extensive for dinner! Brought friends for dinner and they all enjoyed. :D
Maakin was a random find last Saturday when my friend and I was looking for a place to have lunch. When we walked in the restaurant was filled with Thai customers, so my initial thought that it must be authentic!
🔆LOCATION🔆
Very large and spacious restaurant located on Flinders Lane, between Elizabeth and Queen Street (Closer to Elizabeth Street corner). This used to be a Japanese restaurant guess it wasnt doing too well. I think Maakin is a great addition to the area. Easy to find and affordable authentic meal.
🔆SERVICE🔆
A lovely and friendly Thai lady gave us menu's and told us to sit anywhere. Once we know what to eat to go up to the counter to order and pay.
Everything is self-service. We get a ticket and when called we'd go up and collect our order from the counter.
Towards the back long bench there are cutlery and condiments.
🔆MENU🔆
The menu is printed quite large but very easy to read and good photos.
One side of the menu lists all food items that are $9.95 with vegetarian options
Other side of the menu lists chef's special for $10.00 to $13.90
Pad Thai is from $11.90
Entree/snacks are between $2.50 to $4.00
We ordered to share:
BBQ Chicken Rice, $9.95
Thai Pork Boat Noodle, $9.95
Scallops (3 in one skewer serve), $2.50
🔆PRICE🔆
Absolutely affordable price of $9.95 for a main meal. I am very impressed.
🔆VERDICT🔆
The fried scallops were fresh and lightly battered. It was absolutely delicious.
The Boat Noodles soup tasted amazing, full of flavour, exactly how it should be. I would definitely come back just for the boat noodles.
The BBQ chicken unfortunately lacked flavour but the chicken was very tender and cooked well.
I am excited that there is a great Thai cheap eats restaurant in the city, a great place to go. I will definitely be back to try other items on the menu.
Maakin is a cosy, no-fuss restaurant that delivers quick meals that is a decent value to customers. The ambiance is quite comfortable with covers of pop music pumping through its interior. The orders come out quickly (my fish dish took less than five minutes; see photo), the staff are friendly and helpful and the menu has a variety of dishes on offer that is well prepared. They have a self service method in terms of getting complimentary drinks and cutlery. They don't market themselves well in terms of websites and adverts but rely on social media and free advertising so it has been quiet for now as they are quite new. I will definitely revisit to try their other dishes and drinks.
Found this place accidentally but with inspiring experience! The food taste good. We had the whole fish dish and a pork neck rice. The pork was marinated with special sauces so it's full of flavor. The fish is crispy outside and juicy inside, goes really well with its dresing. A place with good food and reasonable price!
Went with my office colleague and everyone liked the food. I have ordered chicken laska and the food was very tasty and yummy. Have to try other different varieties as well.
The restaurant was good and it was self-service, great services as well. I had lunch with my sister, we ordered Tom Yum noodle, Pork Boat noodle and Grilled fish with salad.. So nice and gave a lot and cheap, only $29.90 of the total. Thanks.
I ordered fish for my dinner and it taste very good complete with salad, soup and rice. The price is affordable too. Definitely coming back here!
With a food menu from $9.95-$15, you’d be foolish not to try. It’s all self service and you wait for your food after paying, Hawker style. We tried the tom yum noodle soup, duck rice, and the whole fish with rice. The fish is imported from SE Asia, bit boney (not small bones though), but very delicious. Portion sizes are medium. You could get 3 main dishes between 2. The tom yum was delicious! Was full of flavour and just what I needed on a cold winters day.
As the counter to collect food is the other side of the entrance, the only downfall was when the staff kept telling us to go sit downstairs when there’s space upstairs. I don’t want to drop my tray full of food and water or spill my food when walking around during peak lunch time. Despite this, I’d still go back and recommend to my friends!
It’s self serve food court kind of restaurant. Huge potion of beef salad , whole fish with rice side salad and soup for $10 ! Good price for value, staff are very friendly, very relaxing place to eat .
Get chicken rice (hainanses chicken) not as traditional but it's good
Come back for fried fish because it was looking so yummy.... And it's so yummy. But you may needed to asked more souce to make the fish soft and little juicy.
