Review Picks Impressions Thai Restaurant - Melbourne

Timothy Ryan
Pick's Impression on Bay Street was one of my favourite Thai restaurants around, but they've changed their name, and management, and the difference couldn't be any more stark. What used to be an unassuming Thai restaurant that suprised with its flavours, presentation and service has become a dodgy pseudo-Thai, Chinese restaurant that disappoints on many levels.

We stumbled on this place randomly, but fell in love with it straight away. Extremely friendly and helpful staff invited us in and then served us delicious food that far exceeded our expectations. We couldn't stop eating, even when we were full. Will definitely come back here again!

Little Thai place at the end of Bay Street. Started with the pork satay skewers, so good, the satay sauce itself was really nice! Then had the beef Penang curry with coconut rice, the beef was really soft and flavours were on point!
I Love Food
Dined here on Sunday night on a Scoopon deal - value was great as we got $120 credit for $59. The food was nice BUT...................................................................................... the service was BAD - there was only 1 girl working and for the time we dined, there were about 4 other tables so not overly busy but she seemed really stressed. Service was very slow and not up to the standard of food. There was 4 of us, we all ordered entrees - I enjoyed the fish cakes. The 4th and final entrée did not come out until the 3 of us had already finished our entrees and we had to ask for it. For mains we had the lamb curry (only 3 pieces of lamb for $20.50 - RIP OFF - lamb was soft and tasty but not enough to go around for 4 pax), red curry chicken and ginger prawns (not very strong ginger taste which was disappointing) with coconut rice and roti (we did not receive the roti until we had all finished our 3 mains which was pointless as you want roti with your meal and curry to dip and enjoy and we had to ask for it a few times). All the food dishes were tasty but not very hot temperature wise which was a concern. Took so long for our entrees and mains to come out we didn't bother trying to order dessert or ask for a menu. Also the place was really cold. They had a small heater when we first walked in but no heating system that heats the entire restaurant. Cmon guys people like to dine in a nice warm cosy restaurant and not feel freezing the entire time, not an enjoyable dining experience. So overall food was good but the service being so slow and bad and restaurant being so understaffed we won't be back. There are plenty of nicer thai restaurants out there.

Oh my gosh the food here is absolutely amazing! Although I haven't had too much Thai food in Melbourne before, this would have to be one of the best ones I've been to so far. The two of us were absolutely famished and demolished SIX dishes without any trouble. First up was the prawn fried rice, this was really yummy and had lots of flavour and wok air in it; the texture of the rice was just perfect and was not too soft or too hard. Every dish started to come quickly one by one after that and every single one was them was a delight to eat. The clear vegetable soup was a nice palate cleanser in between devouring each dish and had a nice sweet tinge that was not overpowered by the pepper. The taste was just heavenly. The other dishes we ordered were (pardon me for not remembering the Thai names): stir fried pork belly with chilli and basil, stir fried vegetables in oyster sauce (asparagus, baby corn and mushrooms), prawn omelette and ginger prawns. Looks like we had a lot of prawns tonight! Although we weren't asked what level of spice we wanted the food to be, the amount in the dishes suited our tastebuds just fine, and the sauces were also incredibly delicious. The only problem with this place is that it's a bit too pricey for the portion sizes (eg. $21 for a prawn fried rice is slightly unjust) and it's not exactly a fancy place, so be prepared for that. Service was friendly and attentive and the girls were always smiling. Already recommended this place to friends and hope they can keep up the great stuff (and maybe consider lowering the prices).

Defiantly not worth 2.9 as a score! Awesome food so full yum! The entrees were fantastic loved the curry puffs and the duck roti! The cashew chicken dish was also yum! Will go back!

Port Melbourne is a wonderful place to usually find great Thai food. Lots of restaurants to choose from! So Picks Thai hit our radar when we had a voucher from The Entertainment book. The food to me has always been on the pricier side for Thai so this was a great excuse to try.!<br/>I had been really wanting some pork belly.. So I ordered the Crispy Pork Belly with Chinese Broccoli ($19.90). I was so excited to try since I had been having some amazing pork belly at other Asian fusion places in the city. What came out was nothing like anything I have had before. It was definitely NOT pork belly by any means. It looked as flat as a schnitzel, hardly any meat on it, the fat had not been rendered properly so it was all gluggy and just totally unedible. I would honestly question the person who thought this meal was good enough to send out. The chinese broccoli was ok but I couldnt even think about the vegetables. <br/>My partner had the chefs special of the sizzling seafood ($27). All the seafood was pretty over cooked and the taste of peppercorns overtook the meal. <br/>When the waitress took the plates away I did say that my meal wasnt very nice. I was as polite as anything as I dont like offending people. She profusely apologised. I left it at that. As we were going to pay she came running out asking me to take a seat again as they wanted to fix it with giving me a complimentary dessert which I said was absolutely unecessary. She insisted so we sat down again. The dessert I was advised that came out (I cannot find it on their menu right now) was a banana dumpling with a coconut rice ice cream.. I eat dumplings alot and this was not a dumpling.. It was terrible... My gosh, I didnt think things could get any worse.. I felt terrible! We had already paid by this stage so as soon as the waitress was out the back we left.. I couldnt cope with telling her another meal was terrible.. I so wanted to like this place and support local businesses, but unfortunately this isnt great Thai. Sorry guys.

I've only ever had the duck roti roll as they are my two favourite foods in one! It is amazing and they are well priced compared to some of the (many) other Thai places in port melbourne

I've been here many times and I am always impressed everything I've tried delicious and fresh. Service sometime can be a little slow but always friendly and polite

I went here because I received a Scoopon for a dinner for two as a gift. We enjoyed it! Tasty, fresh food served promptly. I found the service was fast but not overly friendly. I will be back (with or without a Scoopon) as I enjoyed the food and am interested in trying it again!

"...DECENT THAI..BUT..NOT QUITE GOOD ENOUGH..."<br/>[Was known as OLARNDO THAI] <br/><br/>Made a booking to eat at PICKS IMPRESSION THAI RESTAURANT in Bay Street, Port Melbourne.<br/><br/>We started with 2 x Impress Platters: vegetable spring rolls, fish cakes, curry puffs, bean curd rolls and 2 sauces - all good, loved the peanut sauce..<br/><br/>Then, we ordered: <br/>1 x Red Duck Curry - Good flavour, Perfect number 2 heat, Enjoyable..<br/>1 x Green Chicken Curry - Reasonable flavour, Not enough chicken..<br/>1 x Massaman Beef Curry - Okay flavour, Beef incredibly tough and chewy..<br/>1 x Pad Thai - Not so good, All noodles, Very sweet.. <br/>2 x Steamed Rice - Charged for 4..<br/><br/>Service: Pretty poor at the beginning - waited for ages.. and ages.. Dishes, when they were ready, just placed onto table at random.. I think they were far from prepared for a relatively busy night - looked like there was stress in the kitchen.. To be fair, in the end, they made up for it.. And, house water was poured - it was chilled and filtered..<br/><br/>Ambience: It's at the quiet end of Bay Street, so not a lot of action.. this might suit many.. Inside it's clean.. quasi contemporary.. comfy seating.. decorated with Thai bits and pieces.. but, a little dark..<br/><br/>Cost: $126 for food only, for four.. Serves are a bit on the small side.. we thought..?? Fair price, I s'pose..<br/><br/>Visited on Saturday 24 October for Dinner with 'mine' family of four.

I will preface this with the fact we are not Thai experts , but we came on a voucher $39 and neither the service nor the food lived up to our expectations. The Singha beer was a highlight, it has the potential to be good but lacks management.

Had dinner on a Monday night and the service and food were fantastic. Will definately be back there and they do takeaway delivery, so we'll be ordering that as well.
FOOD TRIP
Thai restaurant in the Port Melbourne region. Nothing really stands out, food was average, wouldn't come here especially to eat Thai. . Bean Curd Roll (4) $8.90. Crab Meat mixed with Minced Pork, Egg and Corn then served with Plum Sauce. Quite crispy, but didn't really taste anything except pork mince. 6/10

We ordered a couple of dishes for dinner. The pad see ew was very appetizing but chicken basil was over spicy. Am I'm from an Indian background and pride myself on handling spices. The only drawbacks would be the lack of ambiance, on a weekend night there were only 2 other tables occupied which could be due to their pricing. $18-$25 for mains is expensive considering there are Thai restaurants in the city with great meals for around $10-$12.

Yum! We were so disappointed when the previous Thai restaurant in this premises closed down but Picks has gone one better. <br/>The food is amazing and different but in a good way. This is our favourite Port melbourne Thai restaurant hands down.
