Scrumptious pumpkin soup, delicious toasted sourdough to accompany it ... great skinny cappucino ... and the couple ofchips I pinched from my friends lunch were absolutely 'the bomb'. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside ... best chips I'd had in a long time. Topped the whole experience off with a looksee into the bakers vintage Scotch oven and an insight into its history and workings. Highly recommend this ripper little bakery restaurant ... a hidden gem and a real bonus to the area.
We frequently visit Turners and love both the food and the lovely team. The cafe menu is always delicious, the cakes are yum, the only thing I’ve been a little bit disappointed with is the sausage rolls. I find them a little bit bland compared to my own.
We’ll definitely be back, it’s a great location with delicious food.
Always a good brunch when we visit, almost everything seems to be made on site. More expensive than other local cafes, but worth the extra for something a bit special.
Turners bakehouse is well worth a trip if you’re looking for a tranquil, cosy and homely dining experience. Wait staff are friendly and efficient, earthy tasting food, warming coffee, an overall great way to start to kickstart your day.
Generous seating arrangements so be sure to bring along your friends and family.
Turners bakehouse has plenty to offer for all, from hearty eggs for breakfast, to slices and cakes for those sweet seekers. The most difficult part is choosing what to get!!
Have I reviewed this place before? Well, it doesn't matter, I have more to say. It is great. Lovely atmosphere here - beautiful old bakehouse in the "old" part of Mernda, but the cakes are to die for. They make them all on premises, and the vanilla slice was clearly not from manufactured fillings. The pastry was light, crispy and flaky, the vanilla custard tasted much more homemade and less commercial than other places, and with a light dusting of icing sugar on it, it was wicked temptation but worth it. The Coeliac One was able to have a gluten free lemon meringue tart and he was in heaven. The pastry was light and not at all crumbly as gf stuff so often is. It is not cheap, but it is worth the trip.
I edited this post to add a photo of one of the rooms of the old house where you can sit to eat if you don't want to eat outside. I just love the old building.
I added the photo of one of the rooms at Turner's - imagine it when the fire is going - lovely and cosy!
This place never ever disappoints. Food is always top quality. Do try the Lamb souvlaki - melts in your mouth and full of taste. Salads always delightful and I've never had a burger there that wasn't delicious. Sausage rolls divine. Coffee great. Wait staff friendly and efficient. Well worth a trip.
Good food, very professional service sans a smile!!! Also, the menu is bit pricey for Mernda but in all I'll go back again and hopefully next time, they have their smile back :)
What a wonderful treat this place is. Set along a fairly quiet suburban road, this eatery has a pioneering, early settler type of attractiveness to it.
The large baked items are screaming homemade freshness and look incredibly tempting! Between the five of us, we ate almond croissant, chocolate au pain, a blueberry muffin and a vanilla slice. They were all extremely good, and the vanilla slice had a cream filling of some delicious description, rather than the ghastly custard that I loathe (but is loved by so many others...).
Our waitress was delightful, attentive and friendly, as were the rest of the staff, and we picked up a yummy loaf of pumpkin sourdough bread to take home, which was superb, toasted up the next morning under avocado, smoked salmon and poached eggs. Well recommended.
We love this place . . . even though they shut at 3.00 p.m. I suppose bakers who start work early have to sleep some time . . . and they do it 7 days a week.
When you turn into Schotters Road make sure you SLOW to 50 kph or, like the us, and several people we know who’ve had the same experience, you’ll be booked by a demon speed camera. So we really must love the joint to risk this speed trap on a wide, sparsely populated, country road, where all the surrounding roads run at speed limits of 60 and 80 kph.
OK, now that I’ve saved you $198 or more, let me tell you about the food . . . in the context of quality bakery food.
It’s not quite Cafe Babka in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, where we go for outstanding sandwiches and the incredible perfection of their Tarte des Demoiselles Tatin [otherwise known as Tarte Tatin] served with a generous dollop of heavy cream. At Babka the seating is at best cosy and generally cramped but you put up with it for the astonishingly good food . . . and the terrific staff.
At Turner’s Bakehouse and Eatery the seating is way more generous. They have some rooms with grand old timbered tables so that you can take a dozen people to lunch in style. In cooler times they have rooms where the open fireplaces ensure you can be warm without being roasted alive.
The highly professional staff, who manage to be friendly and attentive and down to earth without being annoying, are another bonus of taking the trip up Plenty Road to fabulous Mernda [about to have its own railway station in 2019].
I often take people here for lunch. In the warmer weather we choose to eat in the garden. The bruschetta is great and their pies are exceptional. I try to avoid pastry - even though I look like I must live on the stuff - but at $10 the chunky beef and Shiraz pie with chips is just too good a gourmet opportunity to pass up! The pastry is perfect, the filling delicious and the chips exceptional . . . beautifully crisp on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside. For another $6 you can have a salad to atone for your sins.
While it’s BYO you can get a decent glass of wine for $8 which can be better than taking a bottle and throwing away the half you don’t drink. They also have beer. And great coffee [ask for it hot]. Oh yes . . . if you like artisan sourdough bread they have heaps of it which I’ve noticed is often generously discounted towards the end of the day . . . if they have any left . . . it’s obviously baked fresh every day.
My fifth visit to this quaint little hidden gem. Service is always friendly here, not the fastest but when you come to eat at a piece of history who wants to rush? Had the Schnitzel sandwich on their freshly baked ciabatta this time. Very tasty! The beer battered chips were delish. No room left for one of their divine vanilla slices though - always next time.
The best Vanilla Slice in Town!!! The all day breakfast is great too. I recommend having brunch here. The service is always friendly and the place is charming. Get in early to get yourself one of the vanilla slices as they go super fast!

Cute cafe that seems to be hidden. Didn't know about this cafe, until a friend suggested we go here. Beautiful gardens and a friendly owner/ manager. Food and coffee were lovely, especially mixed with the atmosphere in the garden. Haven't been back here in over a year, but I will be back, no doubt. Didn't have one negative experience here.
